Cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata L.). perennial ryegrass (Loliumperenne L.) and Italian ryegrass (L. multiflorum Lam.) plantswere grown on deep (75–95 cm) columns of soil in glasshousesand growth rooms with and without irrigation. The species inwhich growth declined least rapidly after water had been withheldwere those which transpired most slowly. During early establishmentin the glasshouse cocksfoot transpired least because of slowroot growth. In the growth room, when root systems were deeperand denser, perennial ryegrass transpired least because of lowleaf water conductance. Results are discussed in relation to(a) drought resistance in the three species; (b) breeding forincreased drought resistance through modifying root distributionand leaf water conductance; and (c) the use of isolated soilcolumns in water relations studies. In axillary buds of Dactylis glomerata L., Secale cereale L.,and Lolium perenne L., the first two procambial strands of theprophyll and the median strand of the first normal leaf areinitiated in the bud in isolation from the vascular system ofthe parent axis. A rapid technique has been developed for studying the morphologyand anatomy of leaves of forage grasses. It has been used tocompare the leaf dimensions, numbers of structural elements,tissue proportions, stomatal and unicellular hair counts, andmesophyll cell number and size in one variety of Lolium multiflorumLam. and L. perenne L. The influence of a low concentration of SO2 on the growth andsulphur status of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) cv.S23 was examined in a system of specially designed growth chambers.For plants grown without additions of sulphate to the soil,erposure to ifitered air containing 50 µg m–3 SO2alleviated sulphur deficiency that developed during a sequenceof successive harvests, and gave increased yield. The plantshad higher contents of organic and inorganic sulphur than thosegrown with neither sulphate nor SO2. Plants grown with addedsulphate showed no signs of sulphur deficiency and althoughexposure to SO2 increased their sulphur content it had no effecton yield. The coefficient of transpiration (g water transpiredg–1 dry wt. of shoots) was reduced when plants which otherwisehad an inadequate supply of sulphur were exposed to SO2; forplants with adequate supplies of sulphate, it was similar whetherthey were grown with or without the addition of SO2 to the air.The results are discussed in relation to other known reactionsof plants to SO2.  相似文献

Resistance to low temperature is crucial for overwintering crops. In this work we compared the resistance to low temperature treatment of some varieties of two forage grass species Dactylis glomerata L. and Lolium perenne L. in order to elucidate the reason for the better resistance found in some species. The variety Amila of D. glomerata and Diament of L. perenne were more tolerant to low temperature stress during the emergence and tillering phases as compared to the varieties Amera and Gagat. The improved tolerance and ability for recovery after stress were associated with the better recovery of photosynthetic efficiency of these varieties and better survival of their shoots after low temperature stress.  相似文献

The growth of cocksfoot at 14°, 22°, and 26° C wasmeasured at weekly intervals over a period of six weeks. Initially,the relative growth rates increased with increase in temperature,but during the final three weeks they were little differentat all three temperatures. The reduction in relative growthrates with time at 22° and 26° were associated withincreases in size which were partly reflected by reductionsin the leaf-area ratios. It is also likely that at 26° changesin the photosynthetic capacity of leaves, perhaps associatedwith decreasing concentrations of mineral nutrients, contributedto the decreased relative growth rates. Leaf expansion and increase in cell numbers were estimated overtwo-day periods at temperatures ranging from 5° to 30°C. Leaf expansion increased with increase in temperature throughoutthis range; extrapolation suggested that it would cease at temperaturesbelow 3° C. The optimum temperature for cell division appearedto be between 20° and 25°C. Different physiological processes appeared to be involved inthe temperature responses of plants of different sizes and histories.With young plants these responses resulted in a large overalleffect of temperature on the growth rate; with older plantsof the same size there appeared to be several compensatory responsesso that variation in temperature over an apprecaible range hadlittle overall effect.  相似文献

Summary Chromosome association at first meiotic metaphase in tetraploid hybrids between Lolium perenne and L. multiflorum was compared with that in autotetraploid L. perenne. The hybrids were found to have significantly higher levels of bivalent frequency, and lower levels of multivalent and chiasma frequency. A significant increase in multivalent frequency with increasing chiasma formation was found in both groups, but the increase was much less in the hybrids. These differences in chromosome associations between the two groups must therefore reflect differences in chiasma distribution and it is suggested that the results indicate a significant degree of preferential bivalent pairing in the hybrids.  相似文献

The growth of two natural populations of cocksfoot from contrastingclimatic regions, Norway and Portugal, was studied in two photoperiodsat three temperatures with three levels of light energy (48,144, and 240 W m–2 in the wavelength interval 400–700nm). There was a consistent increase in relative growth-rate(RGR) in response to increased light energy up to 144 W m–2,but above this energy level there was either no change, or,in some treatments, a decline. Net assimilation rate (NAR) increased,whilst leaf area ratio decreased from the lowest to the highestenergy level in most treatments. The decrease of LAR with increasedlight energy could be attributed to a decrease of both leafweight ratio (LWR) and specific leaf area (SLA), a greater proportionof dry matter being distributed to plant parts other than leaf.This effect occurred although there was a positive relationshipbetween light energy and relative leaf growth-rate (RLGR). Populationdifferences in these growth attributes were most marked in thetreatments with low-temperature and short-day conditions. Theefficiency of energy conversion of visible radiation declinedfrom 3–4 per cent at the lowest energy level to 1–2per cent at the highest energy level.  相似文献

The effects of exposure to SO2 (55 m–3) on the growthand sulphur nutrition of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenneL.) cv. S23 were examined using a system of specially constructedgrowth chambers. The plants were grown in soil with two ratesof added nitrogen, either with or without added sulphate. Theywere harvested twice during the exposure period of 85 d. The high rate of added nitrogen gave a four-fold increase inthe yield of plants given added sulphate but resulted in sulphurdeficiency, with reduced yield and number of tillers, when nosulphate was given. Exposure to SO2 alleviated the effects ofdeficiency but was without effect on the yield of plants givensulphate. With the low rate of added nitrogen, the yield ofplants and the number of tillers were unaffected by the additionof sulphate to the soil or of SO2 to the air. The only indicationof possible injury through exposure of these plants to SO2 wasa small increase in the proportion of dead leaves at the secondharvest. Analysis of the leaves for total S and sulphate-S gave valuesconsistent with sulphur deficiency and its alleviation throughexposure to SO2; the contents of 0?045% S and 42 parts 10–6sulphate-S in deficient plants were raised to 0?102% and 153parts 10–6 respectively. The organic-S content of theleaves was always increased through exposure to SO2. There wasno evidence that exposure to SO2 increased the ‘transpirationcoefficient’ for plants having an adequate supply of sulphurfrom the soil.  相似文献

Serial harvests were taken and quadraticcurves were fitted to log dry weight and leaf area for eachreplicate in order to calculate growth attributes at a constantplant weight for all treatments. Interactions of population,temperature, and photoperiod on relative growth-rate (RGR) werefound, with the greatest population differences at 5 and 30°C in an 8-h photoperiod. Leaf-area ratio (LAR) played alarger part than net assimilation rate (NAR) in determiningthe differential population responses in RGR to daylength, andthese differences in LAR were primarily the result of differentpatterns of dry-matter distribution within the plant.  相似文献

The effect of shading a single tiller to below its compensationpoint for a period of 5 weeks in vegetative plants of Loliumperenne L. cv. S23, was studied in two different experimentseach employing two light regimes, one of which was common toboth experiments. In the first experiment tillers in the axils of the first leafwere shaded three weeks from appearance at both 40 and 70 Wm–2. None of the shaded tillers died and they continuedto produce new leaves and increase in dry weight but at a reducedrate. In the second experiment, tillers with one emerged leafin any leaf axil position were shaded at 70 W m–2 andin a treatment in which light was reduced to 13 W m–2after initial growth at 70 W m–2. As in the first experimentall shaded tillers survived at 70 W m–2 but in the 70 13 W m–2 transfer regime all shaded tillers died. In the second experiment shaded tillers in both light regimeswere supplied with 14C-assimilate by translocation from theremainder of the plant but in the 70 13 W m–2 the initialsupport was withdrawn within 5 weeks of shading. Callus cultures were obtained from immature inflorescences of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) and Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum). Inflorescence segments were cultured on Murashige and Skoog medium (MS) supplemented with 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D). The response in culture with regard to compact callus induction, embryogenesis and plant regeneration was determined for different varieties. The in vitro response was compared for explants from field-grown plants and explants from greenhouse-grown plants. The effect of different 2,4-D concentrations on the in vitro response was also investigated in one L. perenne variety and one L. multiflorum variety. The percentage of explants that formed compact callus and embryogenic callus differed strongly with the cultivar. There was no consistent effect of the growth conditions of the donor plants or the 2,4-D concentration of the medium on this response. Green plants were regenerated from all the cultivars tested. Explants from field-grown plants showed a higher tendency to form albino shoots than explants from greenhouse-grown plants. In the L. perenne variety tested higher 2,4-D concentrations (up to 15 mg/l) resulted in a lower regeneration frequency of green shoots and a higher regeneration frequency of albino shoots (up to 12.5 mg/l). In the L. multiflorum variety tested the effect of 2,4-D on regeneration was less pronounced.  相似文献

In seedling plants of Lolium multiflorum Lam. the tillers weredefoliated but the main shoot was left intact. Radiocarbon as14CO2 was supplied to this shoot at different times followingtiller defoliation and the pattern of distribution of labelledassimilates was determined quantitatively. It was found thata greater proportion (approximately 10–20 per cent) ofexported assimilate was translocated to the cut tillers butalthough the proportion supplied to the root system was lessthe total radiocarbon incorporated by the roots was unchanged.This was brought about by a large increase in the export ofradiocarbon fixed by the intact shoot—up to 100 per centfollowing one treatment. These alterations in the organizationof the defoliated plant lead to a greater efficiency in thecarbon economy and are discussed in relation to the stress imposedby defoliation.  相似文献

Genotypes of Lolium perenne were grown in soil of low phosphorusstatus, with and without additional phosphorus. Lack of phosphorusresulted in a great reduction in the number of main roots andin an increase in the length of each individual root. The numberof tillers was also reduced, but to a lesser extent than thenumber of main roots. Experiments were made to determine the extent of reciprocaltransfer of products (derived from the assimilation of 14CO2)between various parts of the young vegetative grass plant (Loliummultiflorum Lam.). When individual laminae on different tillerswere supplied with 14CO2, 47–64 per cent of the fixedcarbon was exported after 24 h. The principal sinks were theroot system and the shoot or tiller to which the fed leaf wasattached. Other tillers also received significant quantitiesof radiocarbon. When whole tillers were supplied with 14CO2the percentage of fixed radiocarbon exported within 24 h rangedfrom 14–31 per cent. Of this, 50–74 per cent wasrecovered from the root system (except in the case of exportfrom the youngest tiller) but exchange of material between tillersalso occurred.A reciprocity diagram is presented and it is concludedthat despite the magnitude of the exchange no tiller showedan over-all net gain or loss. The main shoot and the tillersdiffered in the extent of their carbon exchange and in theirdegree of independence. The oldest daughter tiller of the mainshoot was the most independent and the main shoot most interdependent.  相似文献
