Resistance to desiccation was examined in six populations of the Israeli bush-dwelling snail Trochoidea simulata , a desert species distributed mainly between the 100–200 mm isohyets.
The present study revealed significant intraspecific differences in resistance to desiccation which are correlated with habitat and climatic gradients within the distribution range of the species. Populations from more arid sites were more resistant to desiccation and heat exposure than those from more mesic areas. However, the population from the Rift Valley (an extremely arid region) was surprisingly poorly resistant. Rates of population water loss under the controlled experimental conditions in the laboratory generally matched the calculated water losses during natural summer aestivation. 相似文献

Theba pisana is a bush-dwelling snail with a circum-Mediterranean distribution. In Israel it is limited to a narrow coastal strip, along which there is a north-to-south gradient in mean annual rainfall (700–300 mm per year). In this study we found significant intraspecific differences among populations ofT. pisana in resistance to desiccation along this gradient, and in a population from Greece, which may be grossly correlated with the climatic gradient. The Greek population was the least resistant to desiccation with an extremely high rate of water loss. The differences in total mass loss were mainly determined by the rate of water loss during the first 4 days of desiccation. A general phenomenon during desiccation was the close regulation of the soft body water content at the expense of the extra-pallial fluid compartment. 相似文献

Along the coastal plain of Israel, shell darkness of the polymorphic land snail Xeropicta vestalis is positively related to the extent of perennial vegetation. It is not related to rain, temperature, geographic position or darkness of the ground.
White shells reflect more radiation than dark ones do, and therefore in Israel's coastal plain, where solar radiation is very strong, they are favoured. Perennial vegetation, where it occurs, shields the snails from the sun by absorbing radiation, so that snails amongst them can afford to be darker, and thus more cryptic. Hence, the more perennial vegetation in the habitat, the darker the shells.
Also during the Pleistocene, when temperatures were 5–10°C lower than today, the shells of the coastal plain were as pale as recent ones are. The land snail Sphincterochila is represented in Israel by five species that replace one another along a climatic gradient that ranges from the Mediterranean areas receiving up to 1000 mm down to arid areas receiving only 70 mm of rain per year.

Morphological variation is often attributed to differential adaptations to diverse habitats, but adaptations to a similar environment do not necessarily result in similar phenotypes. Adaptations for water and heat budget are crucial for organisms living in arid habitats, and in snails, variation in shell morphology has been frequently attributed to selection by stressful environmental factors. However, their phenotypic divergence often is not accompanied by a relevant niche differentiation and consistent relationships with environmental correlates are lacking. In the pulmonate genus Albinaria, there is great size and shape variation between and within species, and there are two major shell sculpture morphotypes, ribbed and smooth. We used 62 populations of 28 Albinaria species, taking into account their phylogeny, to examine the variation of shell traits (sculpture, size, shape), their effect on water and heat budget, and their association with geographical and climatic gradients. We found unambiguous size and shape discrimination between the two morphotypes. Ribbed shells are lighter, taller, and slimmer and have a smaller aperture than the smooth ones. Moreover, significant correlations between shell traits and heat/moisture budget and climate/geography were revealed. Ribbed and taller shells retain more water on their shell surface, and on the other hand, smooth shells exhibit lower water permeability. Therefore, two strategies are being used to prevent water loss, active retention or resistance to loss. Consequently, different alternative solutions evolved and were retained as responses to the same stressful factor by the two distinct shell morphotypes. Larger shells occur in southern latitudes, mostly on islands, and at sites where there is a shortage of rainfall. Therefore, the variation of the examined traits is nonrandom with respect to location and to climate and their evolution can be attributed to selection by environmental factors, with water availability being the key driving agent of body-size variation. 相似文献

We studied the seasonal variation of microhabitat distribution of the land snail Cepaea nemoralis over a 3-year period in a population at Dansville, New York. Stratified random quadrat sampling was used to determine snail densities and environmental variables in each month. The plant cover of each quadrat was estimated by a modified Daubenmire measure. Canonical correlation analysis was used to investigate the relationship between the morph density and the environmental variables. Significant relations existed between snail morphs and environmental variables in 8 of the 13 months analyzed. Temperature and rainfall are two important factors affecting such relations. In hot and dry summer months, morphs had a stronger canonical correlation with the environmental variables than in cool and wet months. Food and shelter were important in determining distribution over habitats of the snail. Food was primarily responsible for snail distribution over habitats in the early summer. As the weather became hot and dry, the importance of shelter became more evident. Both banded and unbanded morphs tended to be associated strongly with sheltered microhabitats in hot dry seasons. 相似文献

Bush-dwelling land snails are exposed to desiccating conditions that are more severe than those of snails that seek the shelter of rock crevices, litter or the upper layers of the soil. We studied the resistance to desiccation in four bush-dwelling species of Israeli snails to evaluate a possible relation between their water economy and their distribution pattern. The resistance to desiccation decreased in the following order: Xeropicta vestalis (a widely distributed Mediterranean species), Trochoidea simulata (a desert species), Theba pisana (a Mediterranean species from the sand dunes of the coastal plain), and Monacha haifaensis (a Mediterranean species). Xeropicta vestalis also had the quickest response to the desiccating conditions. It is probably prevented from establishing itself in the desert, in spite of its superior water economy, because it is an annual, semelparous species, and the desert is a highly unpredictable environment. An immediate response to desiccating conditions may be a key factor in the success of desert-inhabiting land snails. Snails from more humid regions take several days to recruit their water preserving mechanisms, a delay which may be crucial to their water balance. The conchiometrics of X. vestalis and T. simulata suggest that the main water preserving mechanisms of these species are located in the mantle, rather than in the shell and epiphragm. 相似文献

The range dynamics of a species can either be governed by the spatial tracing of the fundamental environmental niche or by adaptation that allows to occupy new niches. Therefore, the investigation of spatial variation in the realized environmental niche is central to the understanding of species range limit dynamics. However, the study of intraspecific niche variation has been neglected in most phylogeographical studies. We studied the spatial distribution of the realized environmental niche in three land snail species of the genus Candidula , integrating phylogeographical methods, morphometrics, and spatial biodiversity informatics . The phylogeographical analyses showed significant range expansions in all species. These expansions were accompanied in Candidula gigaxii by a shift in the realized environmental niche, the species Candidula unifasciata followed its ancestral niche during expansion while the climate changed in the area of origin and Candidula rugosiuscula tracked the ancestral environmental conditions. The significant niche shifts were associated with potentially adaptive changes of shell morphology. Size, density and distribution of the brown garden snail (Cantareus aspersus) were observed relative to cover at a coastal reserve on the North Island, New Zealand. Cover variables depended on vegetation height and available debris (rubbish, wood, cow dung). Air temperature, ground temperature, and relative humidity were recorded continuously during the field survey for the various cover types. Live snails used debris disproportionately as resting habitat, where relative humidity and temperature were the least variable. Desiccation rates were obtained by dehydrating snails of three size-classes and calculating desiccation rates as a function of water loss over time under controlled conditions in the laboratory. Results suggest that the shell aperture:size ratio is an important factor regarding desiccation stress in C. aspersus, especially in young and small-sized snails. 相似文献

A combination of proteomic and biochemical assays was used to examine variations in the venom of Conus vexillum taken from two locations (Hurgada and Sharm El-Shaikh) in the Red Sea, Egypt. Using MALDI/TOF-MS, a remarkable degree of intra-species variation between venom samples from both locations was identified. To evaluate variability in the cytotoxic effects of Conus venom, mice were injected with the same dose from each location. The oxidative stress biomarkers [malondialdehyde (MDA), protein carbonyl content (PCC)], antioxidants [glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT)], total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and nitric oxide (NO), were measured 3, 6, 9 and 12 h post venom injection. The venoms induced a significant increase in the levels of PCC, MDA, NO, GSH and CAT. The venoms significantly inhibited the activity of SOD and reduced the TAC. Toxicological data showed that the venom obtained from Hurgada was more potent than that obtained from Sharm El-Shaikh. It can be concluded that: (1) the venom of the same Conus species from different regions is highly diversified (2) the venoms from different locations reflect clear differences in venom potency and (3) the cytotoxic effects of C. vexillum venom can be attributed to its ability to induce oxidative stress. 相似文献

Few continuous, long-term studies have measured the intensity and variability of natural selection within a framework of clear adaptive hypotheses. In the snail Theba pisana, the proportion of effectively unbanded shells is higher in exposed habitats than in adjacent acacia thickets, which has been explained by microclimatic selection. Comparisons across an ecotone for 34 consecutive years determined the combined effects on morph frequencies of habitat and changes in weather conditions during summer. The long-term average (±s.e.) frequency of effectively unbanded shells was 0.577±0.011 in the open habitat when compared with 0.353±0.005 in the acacia. The persistent association of shell banding with habitat accounted for 34% of the variation in morph frequencies. Differences among years were also large, representing 23% of the variation. Higher proportions of effectively unbanded snails were associated with hotter, sunnier summers. Thus, temporal variation supports the hypothesis of microclimatic selection, consistent with the spatial association with habitat. Based on observed rates of change, the mean annual selection on this polymorphism was about 0.13, but with a large variance: s was as high as 0.5, but ⩽0.05 in about 40% of the years. The large variance and frequent reversals in direction of selection indicate a potential for rapid genetic change, but with little net change in morph frequencies over three decades, highlighting the value of long-term continuous studies of populations facing natural environmental variation. 相似文献

Land snails are subject to daily and seasonal variations in temperature and in water availability and depend on a range of
behavioral and physiological adaptations for coping with problems of maintaining water, ionic, and thermal balance. Heat shock
proteins (HSPs) are a multigene family of proteins whose expression is induced by a variety of stress agents. We used experimental
desiccation to test whether adaptation to different habitats affects HSP expression in two closely related Sphincterochila snail species, a desiccation-resistant, desert species Sphincterochila zonata, and a Mediterranean-type, desiccation-sensitive species Sphincterochila cariosa. We examined the HSP response in the foot, hepatopancreas, and kidney tissues of snails exposed to normothermic desiccation.
Our findings show variations in the HSP response in both timing and magnitude between the two species. The levels of endogenous
Hsp72 in S. cariosa were higher in all the examined tissues, and the induction of Hsp72, Hsp74, and Hsp90 developed earlier than in S. zonata. In contrary, the induction of sHSPs (Hsp25 and Hsp30) was more pronounced in S. zonata compared to S. cariosa. Our results suggest that land snails use HSPs as part of their survival strategy during desiccation and as important components
of the aestivation mechanism in the transition from activity to dormancy. Our study underscores the distinct strategy of HSP
expression in response to desiccation, namely the delayed induction of Hsp70 and Hsp90 together with enhanced induction of
sHSPs in the desert-dwelling species, and suggests that evolution in harsh environments will result in selection for reduced

in order to predict host-pathogen evolutionary dynamics. In the present study, we investigated family and population variation
in the degree of embryonic infection of the pathogenic fungus Saprolegnia spp., by infecting moor frog (Rana arvalis) eggs from six populations and exposing them to two different temperatures. We found a significant family effect on the degree
of Saprolegnia-infection of eggs and embryos, suggesting that there is genetic variation in resistance among embryos, or variation among
females in some aspect of maternally induced resistance. Furthermore, infection level differed significantly between temperatures,
with most families having more infected eggs in the relatively colder temperature. However, eggs and embryos from the different
populations showed different degrees of Saprolegnia-infection in the two temperatures, i.e., there was a significant population × temperature interaction on the proportion of
infected eggs. Thus, the degree of Saprolegnia-infection is sensitive to variation at the level of the family, population and environmental conditions, suggesting that

The distribution of Arianta arbustorum, Cepaea nemoralis and C. hortensis , and the variations in the shell polymorphism of the Cepaea species have been studied in an area of low chalk downland and alluvial river valleys near Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire. The distribution of A. arbustorum is restricted, the species being largely confined to the bottoms of river valleys, especially in hedgerows. Variations in dampness seem the most likely limiting factor. C. hortensis is widespread and found in many habitats, but C. nemoralis is largely confined to woods, and is especially common in beechwoods. The morph-frequencies of C. nemoralis and C. hortensis vary in such a way as to suggest the operation of climatic and visual selection. In C. hortensis there are area effects for the presence or absence of pink five-banded shells, and there is an overall linkage disequilibrium resulting in an excess of unbandeds in non-yellow shells. Reasonable evidence for the operation of random factors in determining the morph-frequencies of populations of Cepaea in the area has been found only for three very disturbed populations. It is suggested that the large number of selective forces known to act on Cepaea populations in this area will account for the variation in morph-frequencies in populations from the same area or habitat. 相似文献

Exceptionally high levels of intraspecific variation of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequences encoding 16S ribosomal RNA (16SrRNA) were detected in populations of the land snail Euhadra peliomphala from the eastern part of Japan. Geographical isolation has occurred within small areas and has created many genetically distinct local populations. These are morphologically segregated into two groups: the first consists of populations from the southern part of the Izu Peninsula, and the second of populations from other areas within the peninsula. They are separated by mountains in the middle of the peninsula. Sequence divergences between these two groups were 7.6–9.5%. The sequence divergences and geological ages of the Izu peninsula and its mountains suggest that the divergence rate of mitochondrial 16SrRNA sequences of this species is extremely rapid, approximately 10% per million years. This rapid evolutional")' rate of mtDNA and vicariance events due to tectonic events and sea level changes has also contributed to creating exceptional geographical variation in the mtDNA of this species. 相似文献

The shell colour of many pulmonate land snail species is highly diverse. Besides a genetic basis, environmentally triggered epigenetic mechanisms including stress proteins as evolutionary capacitors are thought to influence such phenotypic diversity. In this study, we investigated the relationship of stress protein (Hsp70) levels with temperature stress tolerance, population structure and phenotypic diversity within and among different populations of a xerophilic Mediterranean snail species (Xeropicta derbentina). Hsp70 levels varied considerably among populations, and were significantly associated with shell colour diversity: individuals in populations exhibiting low diversity expressed higher Hsp70 levels both constitutively and under heat stress than those of phenotypically diverse populations. In contrast, population structure (cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene) did not correlate with phenotypic diversity. However, genetic parameters (both within and among population differences) were able to explain variation in Hsp70 induction at elevated but non-pathologic temperatures. Our observation that (1) population structure had a high explanatory potential for Hsp70 induction and that (2) Hsp70 levels, in turn, correlated with phenotypic diversity while (3) population structure and phenotypic diversity failed to correlate provides empirical evidence for Hsp70 to act as a mediator between genotypic variation and phenotype and thus for chaperone-driven evolutionary capacitance in natural populations. 相似文献

Summary Aestivating Otala lactea have been shown to reduce the rate of evaporative water loss from the cells of the mantle-collar epithelium to a level comparable to that of an insect. X-ray microanalyses of ultrathin frozen sections from aestivating and non-aestivating snails have shown gradients of chloride and potassium ions in the apical microvillus region of the regulating mantle collar epithelium. The greatest difference in osmotic concentration occurs in the apical 2 m of the cell. There appears to be a barrier at that level that prevents water being mobilised from the underlying tissues. Microgeographical variation in shell morphology of the rock-dwelling land snail Chondrina clienta , collected from 30 sites within an area of 0.5 km2 on the island of Öland, Sweden, was examined in relation to its own population density and that of a potential competitor (the land snail Balea perversa ) and to environmental factors. Dispersal of marked individuals averaged 83 cm per year within a stone pile and 291 cm in an area of exposed bedrock. Local population density of active C. clienta ranged from 5 to 794 individuals per m2 . Shell characters were highly intercorrelated, both within and between populations. Principal component analysis revealed that most of the interpopulational variation could be expressed by the single character of shell height, which ranged from 5.54 to 6.94 mm. In all populations, snails of a given size had the same whorl number. Shell size was not influenced by habitat type (exposed rock surface, stone pile or stone wall) or proportion of calcareous stones within habitat. It was, however, negatively correlated with local population density, indicating intraspecific competition, and positively correlated with the degree of plant cover within the habitat. Analysis of variance revealed additionally a density effect of B. perversa on shell size in C. clienta , probably as a result of interspecific competition. Breeding experiments using C. clienta from different sites and carried out under unifrom conditions caused most of the phenotypic variation to disappear, demonstrating the high phenotypic plasticity of the species. 相似文献
