The extractable contents of Zn, Pb, Cu, Cr, Mn, Ni, Fe and Al were evaluated in sediments from the Lis River (Portugal) using the three-step sequential extraction procedure described by Community Bureau of Reference (BCR, now the Standards, Measurement and Testing Programme) of the European Union. The distribution of trace metals among the exchangeable, water and acid soluble, reducible, oxidizable and residual fractions was determined. The highest metal concentrations were observed in samples collected at the most polluted river sites (animal husbandry, domestic, industrial and agricultural wastes). Pb, Cu, Cr, Ni, Fe and Al were found mainly associated with the residual and organic fractions. High concentrations of Zn and Mn were found in the exchangeable/acid soluble fraction. 相似文献

1. Surface sediment samples of subfossil chironomid head capsules from 47 lakes in southern West Greenland were analysed using multivariate numerical methods in order to explore the relationship between chironomid assemblages and selected environmental variables. The study lakes are located along a climate gradient ranging from coastal maritime conditions near the Davis Strait to a continental climate near the margin of the Greenland ice sheet. 2. High‐resolution surface water temperatures were measured through the summer season using automatic data loggers in 21 of the study lakes. The mean July surface water temperature (1999) ranged from 7.3 to 16.5 °C in the data set. 3. In all lakes, a total of 24 chironomid taxa were recorded; Micropsectra, Psectrocladius, Chironomus and Procladius were the dominant genera. There was a strong correlation between the trophic variables [total nitrogen and total phosphorus (TN, TP)] and temperature, and in redundancy analysis (RDA) the three variables explained almost equal significant amounts of variation in the chironomid data (19.8–22.3%). However, temperature lost significant explanatory power when the effect of TN was partialled out in RDA. 4. The lakes were classified using two‐way indicator species analysis (TWINSPAN ) into eight groups defined by temperature, trophic variables, salinity (conductivity) and lake‐morphometric data. Fourteen chironomid taxa showed significant differences in percentage abundances among groups, with Heterotrissocladius, Micropsectra, Ablabesmyia and Chironomus as the most robust group‐indicator taxa. Forward selection of taxa in multiple discriminant analysis was used to fit chironomid assemblages into lake groups. Using only eight taxa, 95% of lakes were correctly classified at a second TWINSPAN division level (four groups) and 85% of lakes at a third division level (eight groups). 5. This study showed that there is considerable potential in using subfossil chironomid head capsules as paleoenvironmental indicators in both short‐ and long‐term (down‐core) studies of lake ontogeny and palaeoclimate conditions in West Greenland. However, because of the strong correlation between temperature and trophic variables, a quantitative reconstruction of lake‐ and habitat‐type is recommended, in combination with direct reconstruction of single variables such as temperature. 相似文献

Identification of indicator species is invaluable for lake management and long-term environmental change assessments. In this study, multi- and intralake datasets were investigated for their fossil midge assemblages (mostly Chironomidae) in the surface sediment layers representing the modern faunal composition. The aim was to examine taxon-specific responses to selected key variables and to assign indicator taxa for these environmental factors. Taxon-specific optima and tolerances were calculated and the significance of a particular environmental variable in explaining the distribution patterns was tested for each taxa. The results showed that numerous taxa had significant relationship with the environmental variables of interest. Thus, several midge indicator taxa were identified for the key variables. For the interest of palaeolimnology, the present results imply that when reconstructing long-term changes in a single environmental variable, variability in other regional, local or in-lake variables can distort the inference due to the complex taxon-specific responses to multiple environmental factors. 相似文献

Sequential extraction procedure has been carried out to scrutinize the geochemical association of Cadmium (Cd), Copper (Cu), Iron (Fe), Lead (Pb), and Manganese (Mn) with the main sedimentary phases (exchangeable, carbonate, Fe-Mn oxides, organic, and residual fraction) at 10 marine sediment samples collected from the Suez Gulf. Global contamination factor was used to identify the pollution hotspots, which indicated the existence of intensive metal contamination at stations close to the northern part of the Gulf, especially for Cd, Cu, and Pb. The potential ecological risk indices: Potential ecological risk index, risk assessment code, and modified risk assessment code revealed that there are potential hazards to marine biota caused by Cd, Cu, and Pb due to the increased levels of these metals in the labile fractions, which are vulnerable to changes in environmental conditions. This work is a good basis for further studies about metal fractionation in the Suez Gulf. It is also very helpful for government decisions about the development of the Gulf. 相似文献

A sediment study, involving both chemical and biological analyses, was carried out in the St. Lawrence River near Montreal (Lake St. Louis). About 60 stations were sampled during 1984–85, and the sediments were analyzed for support variables, heavy metals, and organochlorinated compounds. Subsamples were elutriated using a 1 to 4 sediment/water ratio. The resulting elutriates were analyzed for several chemical variables, while toxicity was measured using the Microtox test, algal 14C assimilation, and lethality/developmental inhibition in cladocerans, rotifers, and nematodes. The results showed a great variety of responses and sensitivity, and correlations between the tests were non-significant. In terms of toxic responses, the algal and Microtox tests were the most sensitive. Toxic responses could not be explained in simple terms of contaminant concentrations. Therefore, the chemistry of elutriates is not predictive of the toxic potential of contaminated sediments. Biotests can give an insight into the hazard assessment of sediments, but no single test will be sufficient; the use of a battery of standardized biotests, representing different levels of organization/food chain, including representative natural species, is highly recommended. 相似文献

A comprehensive study (chronological, lithological and geochemical) of an 8.5 m postglacial sediment sequence from Lake Peipsi was conducted to elucidate the effects of lake-level changes on the sedimentary environment and biogeochemical dynamics in a large lake. Four lithological units were distinguished in the sediment sequence studied: clayey silt, slightly laminated greyish carbonaceous gyttja, brownish-grey gyttja and dark gyttja. These units indicate that large shifts in sedimentation processes occurred in the past. The sediment data show that fluctuations in water depth had a profound impact on the lake environment, recorded as changes in the lithological composition, phosphorus content of sediments and composition of diatom assemblages. The corresponding changes are best reflected in sediments accumulated during phases of regression when the lake area was also smaller. As the water depth and area of the lake increased, wave-induced erosion and resedimentation smoothed or even disturbed the initial information. The increase of phosphorus content in the unconsolidated, high-porosity surface sediments (0.5 m) is most probably connected with active diffusion and matter exchange between the water-sediment pools. 相似文献

Sediment chemistry of productive and non-productive wild rice sites was measured over 3 consecutive growing seasons Although productive sites differed from non-productive sites in terms of pH, N and potential N mineralization, redox potential was considered to be the major factor which distinguished these site classes. Productivity of wild rice in commercial stands could not be consistently correlated to sediment nutrients. However, growth appeared to be restricted in strongly reduced sediments and sediment Eh is considered to be a rapid, accurate method of estimating site potential. Good growth is expected if Eh is above –150 mB while poor growth is expected when Eh drops below –200 mV. Eh values of sediment samples changed as storage time increased. It is therefore recommended that Eh is recorded on-site. 相似文献

Sediment cores were collected at 5 stations in Lake Varese. They were analyzed for organic matter, N, P, organic C, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Pb, Zn and PAHs. A sedimentological approach has been applied to estimate the ecological risk from identified pollutants.As in other eutrophic lakes in Northern Italy, this lake is also at considerable risk from heavy metal pollution. Cr, Cu and Cd showed the highest enrichment factors for the last 5 years, 23.4, 8.0 and 7.6 respectively. Other metals had enrichment factors ranging from 1 to 3. Fluoranthene was chosen as a representative PAH, derived from combustion products; its average value in surficial sediments ranged from 100 to 220 ng l -1 dw. This compound can be a hazard to human health and aquatic life. An evaluation of radionuclide distributions after the recent Chernobyl accident in the USSR ( 134Cs, 137C s, 131I, 106Ru) provided useful tracers to follow the cycling of pollutants bound to particulate matter in the aquatic ecosystem. 相似文献

The concentrations of polycyclic aromatic and petroleum hydrocarbons, polychlorinated biphenyls, dioxins, organochlorine and organophosphoric pesticides, tributyltin and metals were determined in sediments of the approach fairways to the main ports in the Polish part of the Vistula Lagoon and of the Elbl?g River. Analyzed sediments contained low concentrations of all contaminants, except petroleum hydrocarbons. The average petroleum hydrocarbons’ (PHCs) concentration was 630 mg kg ?1, indicating significant pollution with petroleum hydrocarbons. The highest concentrations of analyzed contaminants were identified in the vicinity of Elbl?g, part of the Vistula Lagoon under the most anthropogenic pressure. 相似文献

1. A sediment core (representing 250–300 years) was taken from each of three lakes of conservation interest and contrasting trophic status in the English Lake District: Wastwater, Bassenthwaite Lake and Esthwaite Water. Lithostratigraphic analyses, radiometric dating and analysis of fossil diatoms were carried out. 2. Transfer functions, based on the diatoms, were used to reconstruct total phosphorus (TP) and, thus, eutrophication at the study lakes. In Wastwater, changes in lake pH were also reconstructed. 3. The lakes were also classified according to their present macrophyte flora, the latter being compared with previous records. 4. The fossil diatoms of Wastwater were continuously dominated by taxa typical of oligotrophic, circumneutral waters, indicating that the lake has not been enriched or acidified in the last 250 years. The aquatic macrophyte flora has probably remained unchanged since before the Industrial Revolution. 5. The diatom assemblages of both Bassenthwaite Lake and Esthwaite Water began to change in the mid-1800s. Further change occurred from the 1960s, at the onset of a recent period of eutrophication. These two lakes have experienced continued nutrient enrichment throughout the 1970s, 80s and 90s, largely associated with increasing phosphorus inputs from sewage effluent. There is no evidence of any recovery in response to recent reductions in external nutrient loads. 6. Only in Esthwaite Water has the change in aquatic macrophytes been pronounced. 7. Palaeolimnological reconstruction is useful in determining background conditions and natural variation in lake ecosystems. 相似文献

Lake Kraenepoel (Belgium) is a shallow lake (22 ha), divided in two basins since 1957 by a shallow dike. The lake was used
for fish farming until World War II and was drawn down about every 5 years to harvest fish. Despite its dense historical carp
population, it had clear water and a rich Littorelletea vegetation. During the course of the 20th century, the lake became
eutrophic and the Littorelletea vegetation degraded. The northern basin, which was still drawn down about every decade after
1957, retained its clear water and had a dense submerged macrophyte vegetation. The southern basin, which was never drawn
down after 1957 and which received direct surface water inputs, had become a turbid shallow lake with phytoplankton blooms
in summer. In 2000, efforts were taken to restore the lake: the entire lake was drawn down, the fish community was biomanipulated,
nutrient-rich surface water inputs were diverted from the southern basin and sediments were removed (only in the northern
basin). Fish biomanipulation and sediment removal were successful in the northern basin, as nutrient levels declined and the
Littorelletea vegetation recovered. In the southern basin, sediment analyses indicated that drawdown resulted in sediments
with a lower water and organic matter content and water column turbidity decreased after the drawdown. But pH in the southern
basin declined to <4, probably because sulphides in the sediment were oxidized during drawdown and sediment desiccation. In
contrast, desiccated sediments were removed from the northern basin and pH did not decline below 6 after restoration. In spite
of the still high dissolved nutrient concentrations, phytoplankton biomass declined significantly in the southern basin, probably
due to acidification. However, no Littorelletea species colonised the lake bottom in the southern basin. Thus, lake drawdown
may be a useful management technique to promote clear water conditions in shallow lakes. However, acidification due to sulphide
oxidation may be an undesirable outcome and should be considered in drawdown and sediment desiccation manipulations. 相似文献

Denitrification rates and nitrous oxide (N 2O) effluxes were measured at different temperatures and for different oxygen concentrations in the sediments of a eutrophied
river entering the Bothnian Bay. The experiments were made in a laboratory microcosm with intact sediment samples. 15N-labelling was used to measure denitrification rates (Dw). The rates were measured at four temperatures (5, 10, 15 and 20°C)
and with three oxygen inputs (<0.2, 5, and 10 mg O 2 l −1). The temperature response was highly affected by oxygen concentration. At higher O 2 concentrations (5 and 10 mg O 2 l −1) a saturation over 10°C was observed, whereas the anoxic treatment (<0.2 mg O 2 l −1) showed an exponential increase in the temperature interval with a Q
10 value of 3.1. The result is described with a combined statistical model. In contrast with overall denitrification, the N 2O effluxes from sediments decreased with increasing temperature. The N 2O effluxes had a lower response to oxygen than denitrification rates. The N 2O/N 2 ratio was always below 0.02. Increased temperatures in the future could enhance denitrification rates in boreal river sediments
but would not increase the amount of N 2O produced. 相似文献

We used electrophoretically identified material to assess the geographical distributions, life cycles and interspecific hybridization
of two sibling species of the Mysis relicta species group (sp. I and sp. II) in the northern Baltic region. In the Gulf of
Finland, sp. I prevails in inshore waters and sp. II in the open sea; the distributions overlap in the outer archipelago zone.
In the Gulf of Bothnia, only sp. II was found in the southern part (Bothnian Sea), whereas the two species coexist throughout
the northerly Bothnian Bay. Both the local and large-scale distributions are salinity-related, but salinity alone does not
explain the differences. The two species exhibit different patterns of geographical variation in their life histories. In
strict sympatry in the north they have identical two-year life cycles with winter breeding. Further south (Gulf of Finland),
sp. I exhibits a predominantly one-year winter-breeding cycle, whereas sp. II breeds throughout the year. The patterns comply
with the concept of a great phenotypic flexibility and environmental control of life history characteristics in the Mysis
relicta group, and make a contrast to the stable life cycle of the congeneric M. mixta. F1 hybrids between the two M. relicta
group species were found at a low frequency (0.6%) in the Bothnian Bay, but not in other areas of sympatry.

Core LNO3 is 1136 cm long and includes uninterrupted sediments from the Oldest Dryas to historic time which have been submitted for geological, geochemical, palynological and diatom analysis. Thirty samples have been investigated for diatoms, focussing especially on their preservation, which changed during major hydrological events. In the lower part of the core (Oldest Dryas to beginning of Atlantic), with low carbonate, but high clastic silicate content, the diatoms are rare but are well preserved. In the upper well carbonated part of the core (Atlantic to historical periods), the diatoms are abundant but show traces of dissolution.Between 1136 and 909 cm (Oldest Dryas) the flora is made up of benthic species principally of the genus Fragilaria. This flora is often the first to develop after the last glaciation. Between 879 and 569 cm (Bølling to beginning of Atlantic), littoral and terrestrial species adapted to eutrophic conditions are dominating. They suggest a strong fluvial impact on sedimentation, which corroborates the hypothesis of past inflows of the River Aar into the lake. Between 529 cm and 1 cm (Atlantic to historical periods) planktonic species of the genera Cyclotella, Aulacoseira or Stephanodiscus are dominating. This suggests that the upper well carbonated sediments were mainly formed by pelagic precipitation, without influence of the River Aar. The trophic level of the lake seems to have decreased, then increased again during prehistoric deforestation and development of agriculture in the watershed. 相似文献

AbstractThe Huaihe River has suffered increasing pressure from pollutants including metals from anthropogenic activities. In this study, enrichment and fractionation behavior of trace metals were analyzed in sediment samples obtained from fish spawning area of the Huaihe River (Anhui Section) to evaluate the potential ecological risk of trace metals to aquatic organisms. Geochemical indices including enrichment factor and geo-accumulation index as well as mean probable effect concentration quotient and risk assessment code were adopted to assess the contamination degree and potential ecological toxicity. Results showed that the total contents of Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, Cd, As, and Hg in sediment were 23.1?±?6.4, 32.3?±?11.1, 76.8?±?14.2, 84.6?±?17.2, 0.2?±?0.1, 9.0?±?3.0, and 0.031?±?0.010?mg/kg, respectively. The indexes EF and Igeo revealed slight accumulation for Pb, Zn, Cr, Cd, and As in some sampling sites. The result of Qm-PEC demonstrated that trace metals in sediment were not toxic to aquatic organisms. Most trace metals appeared to mainly associate with the residual form suggesting lower mobility whereas Cd presented a relative higher exchangeable fraction indicating a great degree of bioavailability. The result of risk assessment code (RAC) evaluation revealed that Cd poses a medium ecological risk for aquatic organisms whereas most of the other trace metals pose low risks. 相似文献

The moult-staging technique was used to determine the main moult stages (MS) and their duration in laboratory-reared juveniles and subadults of Mysis mixta and Neomysis integer. The relative duration of each stage was similar for both species with premoult occupying the major part of the moult cycle (51% and 44% for M. mixta and N. integer, respectively), followed by postmoult (26% and 34%) and intermoult (23% and 22%). Effects of temperature and feeding regimes on the chronology of the moult cycle were investigated. When the duration of the moult cycle (MCD) was extended by manipulating the feeding regime, animals prolonged their late postmoult and early premoult stages. At 12 and 5 °C, no specific moult stage varied in relative duration as long as food supply was high. Field application of moult staging for growth assessment was tested using wild-caught M. mixta. The MCD estimated via moulting experiments was compared to that obtained by analyzing moult stage distribution combined with the experimentally obtained data on stage duration. Close correspondence between two methods of MCD assessment was observed with moult-staging technique being particularly useful in situations when conducting of experiments immediately after collection is not feasible. 相似文献

Concentrations of manganese were determined in the liver, kidney, muscle and bone of white suckers ( Catostomus commersoni) from five acid (pH < 5.8), and two circumneutral lakes in south-central Ontario. Manganese tissue concentrations were greater in fish captured from the most acidified lakes with the greatest concentrations of dissolved manganese. These fish had increased concentrations of manganese in the liver, as indicated by a comparison of liver:kidney manganese concentration ratios among the seven fish populations. Tissue concentrations of manganese from all populations either were negatively correlated (P < 0.05) or remained constant with fish size indicating homeostatic regulation of this metal. Manganese concentrations of the benthic fauna were positively correlated to sediment concentrations (R=0.30). Lake sediment manganese concentrations were significantly correlated to maximum lake depth (R=0.80, P < 0.03), with the concentrations in the top 0–1 cm dependent on the redox conditions in the seven lakes. Based on the seven lakes studied, manganese concentrations in the benthic-feeding white sucker correlated better with dissolved manganese, than with either the concentrations in food or surficial sediments. 相似文献

Faunal analysis of fossil foraminifera from marine gravity and piston cores collected by the Japanese Antarctic Research Expeditions (1981 and 1992) is used to estimate the impact of the latest Quaternary paleoceanography on coastal environments of the eastern part of Lützow-Holm Bay, East Antarctica.Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) carbon-14 ages produced from sedimentary organic carbon were less than 16 ka (non-corrected). Detailed correlation among submarine cores and Holocene elevated marine deposits exposed on the eastern shore of the embayment is difficult due to the indefinite reservoir correction value for marine organic matter and to upward-increasing abnormal ages for some cores.A local carbonate dissolution level can be delineated around the present depth of 300–400 m or shallower in the eastern part of Lützow-Holm Bay during the Holocene, based on distributional trends of arenaceous, calcareous benthic, and planktonic foraminifera recognized within a depth less than 600 m. Downcore recovery of calcareous foraminifera containing Bulimina aculeata from two cores obtained in a drowned glacial trough deeper than 600 m situated far beyond the dissolution depth of CaCO 3 indicates the incursion of warm, high-nutrient, and CaCO 3-saturated Circumpolar Deep Water (CDW) from the offshore area along the trough toward the southeastern coast of Lützow-Holm Bay during the Holocene. The intrusion of CDW impacted on the marine environments of the southeastern coast, thereby contributing to peripheral retreat of the ice sheet as well as increasing calcareous benthic foraminiferal productivity along the southeastern coast of Lützow-Holm Bay. 相似文献

Sediment samples from the Ave river basin were collected with the aim of determining metal total pollution contents. Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb, Zn and VM at 550 °C were determined. Some physico-chemical parameters were also quantified in water samples collected in the water column just above the sediments. Metal contamination factors (CF) indicated that sediments were not contaminated with Cu and Pb, slightly with Zn and moderately with Cr. For sediments with high metal pollution loadings, the original BCR (Community Bureau of Reference) metal speciation protocol was also applied. Speciation studies showed that chromium was mainly associated with the oxidisable plus residual fractions (>85%). These results suggest that changes in the physico-chemical properties of the river water (e.g. pH, Eh) should not be accompanied by a significative release of chromium from sediments. The relationships between chromium speciation fractions, physic-chemical parameters of the sediments and water samples were studied by Principal Component Analysis, and allowed to reduce the dimensionality of the data matrix from 14 to 3 significant components accounting for 89% of the variance. It was found that hydrous Fe/Mn oxides and organic matter are the “carriers” of chromium associated to fractions exchangeable and oxidable. 相似文献

Exposed riverine sediments (ERS) are an important invertebrate habitat. Ground beetle data from pitfall trap surveys of 165 sites in the catchments of the Rivers Carron, Nith, Spey, Tweed and Eden and from 48 sites in the catchments of the Rivers Blyth, Breamish, Coquet, Glen, Pont, South Tyne, Till, Tweed and Tyne were used to produce ERS habitat classifications in Scotland and northern England respectively. Within each habitat type the quality of sites were assessed using indices based on rarity and fidelity values and using species richness as a measure of diversity. Considerable variation in these indices was seen within and between habitat types, showing potential for their use in assessing site quality and for ranking sites within habitats. The use of standardised invertebrate survey and distribution data, together with species assemblage information, for the conservation of invertebrate habitat types as an alternative to the use of selected indicator species, is discussed. 相似文献
