The degradation of tributyltin (TBT) and changes of bacterial number and community structures were investigated in microcosms using the sediment collected from the Mekong River, Vietnam. Concentrations of TBT in sediments were less than 0.62 ng/g (dry wt), lower than those reported from other areas. TBT-resistant bacteria were found in the three sampling sites, and the occurrence rates were 11–16% out of the total viable count. In this microcosm experiment, initial concentration of TBT [1.0–1.4 μg/g (dry wt)] decreased to 0.6 μg/g (dry wt) during 150 days, whereas that in the control microcosm with autoclaved sediment did not change, indicating that Mekong River sediment contains high TBT-degrading activity by microorganisms. The occurrence of TBT-resistant bacteria and the bacterial community structures monitored by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis were almost the same between test and control groups, indicating that the addition of TBT had little influence on microbial community structure. Mekong River sediment seems to have a stable microbial community against TBT pollution.  相似文献

The distribution and concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were determined in surface sediments and fish collected from freshwater fishponds in six major aquaculture areas of the Pearl River Delta. The concentrations of total PCBs ranged from 7.32 to 36.2 ng/g (dry weight) in sediments and 5.15 to 226 ng/g (lipid weight) in five species of fish, with higher concentrations in fishponds from two industrialized areas. Feeding habits of fishes played a significant role on the accumulation of PCBs and their homologue patterns in fish tissues, with higher concentrations in muscle and viscera of mandarin fish (Siniperca kneri), and tilapia (Tilapia mossambica) and lower in grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idellus). In muscle, IUPAC No. 118, 138, 81/87, 153, 180, 52, 49, 99, and 44 congeners were the most dominant out of the 36 congeners measured in the present study. The contents of PCBs in fish cultivated in the Pearl River Delta were rather low when compared with the maximum concentration of total PCBs of 2.0 μg/g (wet weight), imposed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration edible seafood. However, due to the bioaccumulation and biomagnification nature of PCBs through the food chain, continuous monitoring of PCBs as well as other Persistent Organic Pollutants in this rapidly developed region is encouraged.  相似文献

The present work investigated the adsorption of Sb(III) and Sb(V) on five sediment samples (Pearl River, Yangtze River, Yellow River, Yongding River, and Liao River) from typical water systems in China and the adsorption of Sb(V) on Pearl River sediment with different organic carbon (OC) fractions using batch experiments. In order to assess the contributions of sedimentary organic components to the overall adsorption of pentavalent Sb on sediments, one sediment sample was treated by commonly used chemical and physical methods to remove different organic components. Experimental data of Sb(III) and Sb(V) adsorption on five sediments were successfully modeled using the Freundlich (r2 > 0.96) isotherm. In general, the sediments with high Fe and Al oxide contents and total organic carbon (TOC) had higher Sb(III) and Sb(V) adsorption than the sediments containing small amounts of Fe and Al oxides and TOC. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in sediment promoted the adsorption of Sb(V), and humin fractions and black carbon-like material in sediment had a high affinity for Sb(V).  相似文献

Abstract

The bioaccumulation of butyltin compounds by freshwater mussels (Elliptio complanata) from contaminated sediments has been investigated in the laboratory and in the field in Oshawa and Whitby Harbours in Ontario. Tributyltin (TBT) was concentrated by mussels to higher concentrations in Whitby Harbour than in Oshawa Harbour. Concentrations of TBT in mussels and rates of accumulation related positively to the concentration of TBT in sediment.  相似文献

Butyltins (BTs) were found in sediments and body tissues of the edible gastropod Odontocymbiola magellanica, in which imposex has been recorded since 2000. BTs in sediments ranged from < MDL to 174.8?ng (Sn) g?1 for TBT, < MDL to 19.2?ng (Sn) g?1 for DBT, and < MDL to 71.8?ng (Sn) g?1 for MBT. In body tissues BTs varied from??1 for TBT, DBT and MBT, respectively. BT concentrations were higher in gonads and digestive glands than in the albumen gland and foot (edible). The highest concentrations of BTs in both sediments and gastropods were found in the harbour area, decreasing with distance to the harbour and areas with less maritime traffic. The Biota-Sediment Accumulation Factor (BSAF) in the different organs was between 0.02–0.42, 0.09–0.35 and 0.08–5.25 for TBT, DBT and MBT, respectively. There were positive correlations between concentrations of BTs in sediments and gastropod body tissues, suggesting that xenobiotic accumulation in O. magellanica occurs mainly through contaminated sediments, rather than water or the food chain. Considering current sediment quality guidelines, our results indicate that acute toxic effects would be expected from TBT exposure, which represents a serious environmental threat for the benthic community. Although the levels of BTs found in the foot of this edible gastropod did not exceed the recommended Tolerable Daily Intake in polluted areas, they should be monitored to ensure the safety of seafood consumers. The alternative antifouling biocides Irgarol and Diuron were not detected in sediments.  相似文献

The occurrence of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) is a major issue for marine and coastal environments in the proximity of urban areas. The occurrence of EDCs in the Pearl River Delta region is well documented but specific data related to Macao is unavailable. The levels of bisphenol-A (BPA), estrone (E1), 17α-estradiol (αE2), 17β-estradiol (E2), estriol (E3), and 17α-ethynylestradiol (EE2) were measured in sediment samples collected along the coastline of Macao. BPA was found in all 45 collected samples with lower BPA concentrations associated to the presence of mangrove trees. Biodegradation assays were performed to evaluate the capacity of the microbial communities of the surveyed ecosystems to degrade BPA and its analogue BPS. Using sediments collected at a WWTP discharge point as inoculum, at a concentration of 2 mg l?1 complete removal of BPA was observed within 6 days, whereas for the same concentration BPS removal was of 95% after 10 days, which is particularly interesting since this compound is considered recalcitrant to biodegradation and likely to accumulate in the environment. Supplementation with BPA improved the degradation of bisphenol-S (BPS). Aiming at the isolation of EDCs-degrading bacteria, enrichments were established with sediments supplied with BPA, BPS, E2 and EE2, which led to the isolation of a bacterial strain, identified as Rhodoccoccus sp. ED55, able to degrade the four compounds at different extents. The isolated strain represents a valuable candidate for bioremediation of contaminated soils and waters.

The tri(n-butyl)tin (TBT) moiety has been shown to have complex ecotoxicological effects on estuarine populations. In the Tagus the massive die-off of the Portuguese oyster (Crassostrea angulata Lmk), has been attributed to the introduction and use of this contaminant by shipyards. This paper reviews previous work by others and reassesses our results obtained in water and sediments of the Tagus estuary, as a contribution to the understanding of tin geochemistry and organotin speciation in this estuary. Contrary to earlier results, the latest surveys show that in the open waters of the Tagus measurable concentrations of all the three butyltin species occur, exhibiting peak concentrations at two locations that indicate two previously undetected sources of TBT. TBT also presents a peak concentration in sediments near the Lisnave shipyards, as previously suggested. The latest surveys still detected methylated forms of tin, particularly monomethyltin (Me Sn3+), in Tagus sediments, with maximum concentrations in the vicinity of urban effluent discharges. The concentrations for TBT and its degradation products found in the Tagus are potentially harmful to the populations of gastropods and endemic bivalves.  相似文献

The biodegradability of linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LAS) was studied in water samples collected from a receiving stream at locations above and below the discharge of a municipal wastewater treatment plant. Rates of primary biodegradation were determined for a commercial LAS mixture by a modified methylene blue-active substance method. Rates of LAS ultimate degradation were determined by radiochemical methods, using a C12 LAS homolog uniformly labeled with 14C in the benzene ring. The C12 LAS was tested at low concentrations (50 and 500 μg/liter) comparable to those existing in the receiving stream. Loss of methylene blue-active substance response over time occurred rapidly in water samples containing sediment collected from below the treatment plant, with an estimated half-life for LAS of 0.23 days. Evolution of 14CO2 during mineralization of the benzene ring occurred rapidly in the same samples, with a half-life for the benzene ring of 0.73 day. Mineralization of the benezene ring was also observed in river water containing no sediments and in river water and sediment samples collected from above the treatment plant. However, the rate of degradation was reduced in these cases, with half-lives for ring carbon ranging from 1.4 to 14 days. Although LAS degradation was enhanced in the presence of sediments, adsorption of LAS to the clay-silt fraction of river sediments was low, and most of the radioactivity was bound to biomass.  相似文献

BackgroundThe rare earth elements (REE) are non-essential elements for plants. They stimulate plant growth at low doses, but at high levels are phytotoxic. There are differences in concentrations of REE in various organs of the same plant species, but the normalized REE patterns can be very similar in samples of the same species collected in different locations. Here we compare normalized REE curves in above-ground samples of Juncus effusus L. (common rush, soft rush) collected from sites with different land-use types.MethodsThe concentrations of rare earth elements were measured in 55 shoot samples of J. effusus L. The samples were collected from 15 sampling sites located in the Holy Cross Mts., south-central Poland and analyzed with the use of inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The results were normalized to the North American Shale Composite and anomalies of different elements were calculated.ResultsTotal REE concentrations varied from 0.028 mg/kg to 2.7 mg/kg. The samples were enriched in the light REE (from La to Eu) with the highest concentrations of La and Ce. The North American Shale Composite (NASC)-normalized REE curves were roughly similar in all samples except for two samples collected in the acid mine drainageaffected areas.ConclusionAll samples showed positive europium anomalies in NASC-normalized REE concentration patterns. The most probable explanation of this is that the uptake and translocation of Eu in J. effusus (and possibly in other wetland plants) is caused by a short-term decrease of the redox potential in a rhizosphere favoring reduction of Eu3+ to Eu2+ and thus enhancing Eu mobility in the soil-plant environment.  相似文献

对珠江三角洲4个不同地方的养殖池塘中水样,泥样和不同种类的鱼样分析,结果表明水产养殖中多氯联苯的分布和归趋在不同分配相中有很大差别,水相中含量较低(8.0~2 4 .0 3ng·L- 1 ) ,沉积相中较高(7.32~36 .2 3ng·g- 1 ,干重) ,特别是工业活动频繁的地方,而乡村相对较低。鱼类不同食性对多氯联苯的积累及其同分异构体的分布有很大影响,肉食性鱼类比草食性鱼类积累更多的多氯联苯.其中代表性同分异构体有IUPAC 118,138,81/ 87,15 3,180 ,5 2 ,4 9,99,4 4。珠江三角洲水产养殖中多氯联苯对生态环境的影响相对较低。  相似文献

2008年5月和8月先后2次采集长江口南支表层沉积物样品,采用高效液相色谱进行多环芳烃测定,研究其分布、来源与生态风险。结果表明:长江口南支表层沉积物中PAHs总量在8.9~312.2ng.g-1;PAHs组成以芘、菲、苯并[b]荧蒽、苯并[a]蒽、苯并[a]芘为主,各站芘的含量均最高,本研究PAHs总含量与长江口、黄河口和鸭绿江口近期的调查数据相近,但明显低于珠江口和闽江口数据,以及长江口潮滩沉积物中PAHs数据;PAHs环数组成以中、高环为主,表明长江口南支PAHs主要来源于相对高温条件下不完全燃烧过程。采用平均效应中值商法评价长江口南支PAHs生态风险结果表明,调查区域PAHs产生生态风险的概率较小(<10%)。  相似文献

Natural attenuation can reduce contamination of tributyltin (TBT), but persistence of the xenobiotic can cause long-term issues in the environment. Biostimulation is used to accelerate biodegradation. This study investigated the ability of individual organic nutrients and growth factors to enhance TBT biodegradation by sediment microorganisms (SED) and Enterobacter cloacae strain TISTR1971 (B3). The supplements that produced high biomass yield were selected for degradation enhancement. For TBT degradation at initial concentration of 0.1 mg/l, negative or limited degradation was observed in some selected supplements indicating that increasing the biomass did not necessarily promote degradation. Consequently, the addition of nutrients was expected to increase both dioxygenase activity and the degrader population. At different concentrations of supplements, a mixture of succinate/glycerol showed the highest removal for SED which reduced TBT by 77%, 75%, and 68% for 0.1×, 1×, and 10× supplement concentration, respectively. For B3, the addition of succinate showed degradation of 49% (0.1×), 75% (1×), and 77% (10×). Most nutrients and amino acids had an inhibitory effect at 1× or 10× levels. Excess amount of the nutrients added can inhibit the initial degradation of TBT. Therefore, TBT biostimulation requires supplements that increase the capability of TBT degraders at an appropriate amount.  相似文献

The present study aimed at analyzing the imposex incidence and the presence of butyltins namely tributyltin (TBT) with its di- and mono-substituted metabolites in Bolinus brandaris whole tissues and in surface sediments at seven sites from the Tunisian coast during one campaign in May 2010. Butyltin levels were evaluated using isotope dilution GC–MS. Except the population collected from Zarat site, imposex was found in snails from the remained six sites with a maximal incidence and sterility (closure of the vaginal opening) registered in Carrier bay. Both imposex indices VDSI and RPLI showed a positive correlation with tissue concentrations of TBT. Total butyltin concentrations in sediments were higher in sites located in the vicinity of shipping areas with levels of TBT high enough to cause environmental concern if there is no legislative restriction and enforcement for the sale and use of these chemicals in Tunisia. These results further confirmed that B. brandaris is a good bioindicator of butyltin pollution in the studied areas. In addition, this study provided recent and new data on sediment butyltin concentrations that could serve for long-term monitoring of TBT pollution in Tunisia and the Mediterranean Sea.  相似文献

Tributyltin (TBT) contamination remains a major problem worldwide. Many laboratories are committed to the development of remediation methodologies that could help reduce the negative impact of this compound in the environment. Furthermore, it is important to have at hand simple methodologies for evaluating TBT toxicity in the laboratory, besides the use of complex and costly analytical instrumentation. With that purpose, a method was adapted that is based on the inhibition of growth of an indicator strain, Micrococcus luteus ATCC 9341, under TBT. Different types of matrices, of TBT concentrations and sample treatments were tested. The results herein reported show that the bioassay method can be applied for both aqueous and soil samples and also for a high range of TBT concentrations (at least up to 500 μmol/L). Besides being cheap and easy to perform, it can be performed in any laboratory. Additionally, one possible application of the method to monitor TBT degradation is presented as an example.  相似文献

The goal of this study was to conduct a probabilistic ecological risk assessment for tributyltin (TBT) in surface waters of the Chesapeake Bay watershed. Ecological risk was characterized by comparing the probability distributions of environmental exposure concentrations with the probability distributions of species response data determined from laboratory studies. The overlap of these distributions was a measure of risk to aquatic life. Tributyltin exposure data from the Chesapeake Bay watershed were available from over 3600 water column samples from 41 stations in nine basins from 1985 through 1996. Most of the stations were located in the Virginia waters of Chesapeake Bay, primarily the James, Elizabeth and York Rivers. In Maryland waters of the Bay, various marina, harbor and river systems were also sampled. As expected, the highest environmental concentrations of tributyltin (based on 90th percentiles) were reported in and near marina areas. The sources of TBT causing these high concentrations were primarily boat hulls and painting/depainting operations. Lower concentrations of TBT were reported in open water areas, such as the Potomac River, Choptank River and C and D Canal, where the density of boats was minimal. Temporal data from a ten year data base (1986-1996) from two areas in Virginia showed that TBT water column concentrations have declined since 1987 legislation prohibited the use of TBT paints on recreation boats (<25?m). Acute saltwater and freshwater TBT toxicity data were available for 43 and 23 species, respectively. Acute effects for saltwater species were reported for concentrations exceeding 420?ng/L; the lowest acute value for a freshwater species was 1110?ng/L. The acute 10th percentiles for all saltwater and freshwater species were 320 and 103?ng/L, respectively. The order of sensitivity from most to least sensitive for saltwater trophic groups and corresponding acute 10th percentiles were as follows: zooplankton (5?ng/L), phytoplankton (124?ng/L), benthos (312?ng/L) and fish (1009?ng/L). For freshwater species, the order of sensitivity from most to least sensitive trophic groups and corresponding acute 10th percentiles were: benthos (44?ng/L), zooplankton (400?ng/L), and fish (849?ng/L). Chronic data for both saltwater and freshwater species were limited to a few species in each water type. Based on these limited data, the saltwater and freshwater chronic 10th percentiles were 5 and 102?ng/L, respectively. Limited mesocosm and microcosm studies in saltwater suggested that TBT concentrations less than 50?ng/L did not impact the structure and function of biological communities. The saltwater acute (320?ng/L) and chronic (5?ng/L) 10th percentiles were used to determine ecological risk because all exposure data were from saltwater areas of the Chesapeake Bay watershed. Highest ecological risk was reported for marina areas in Maryland waters of Chesapeake Bay and for areas in Virginia such as the Elizabeth River, Hampton Creek and Sarah Creek. Low ecological risk was reported for areas such as the Potomac River, Choptank River, C and D Canal and Norfolk Harbor. Regulation of TBT on recreational watercraft in 1987 has successfully reduced water column concentrations of this organometallic compound. However, various studies have showed that TBT may remain in the sediment for years and continue to be source for water column exposures.  相似文献

Eels have fascinated biologists for centuries due to their amazing long-distance migrations between freshwater habitats and very distant ocean spawning areas. The migratory life histories of the Japanese eel, Anguilla japonica, in the waters of south China are not very clear despite its ecological importance, and the need for fishery regulation and management. In this study, strontium (Sr) and calcium (Ca) microchemical profiles of the otoliths of silver eels were measured by X-ray electron probe microanalysis based on data collected from different habitats (including freshwater and brackish habitats), in the large subtropical Pearl River. The corresponding habitat preference characteristics were further analysed using redundancy analysis (RDA). A total of 195 Japanese eels were collected over 6 years. The collected individuals ranged from 180 to 771 mm in total length and from 8 to 612 g in body weight. Two-dimensional pictures of the Sr:Ca concentrations in otoliths revealed that the A. japonica in the Pearl River are almost entirely river eels, spending the majority of their lives in fresh water without exposure to salt water, while the catadromous migration time has delayed about 1 month in the Pearl River estuary in the past 20 years. RDA analysis further indicated that juveniles and adults preferred water with high salinity and high tide levels. Youth preferred habitats with high river fractals. Our findings contribute to a growing body of evidence showing that the eels are extremely scarce currently and conservation measures against them are imminent, including the protection of brackish and freshwater areas where they live in south China.  相似文献

Archaea have multiple roles in global biogeochemical cycles. However, we still have limited knowledge about how environmental factors affect the diversity and function of different archaeal lineages. The goal of this study was to examine the change in the abundance and community structure of Archaea in the sediments collected from the lower Pearl River (mainly North River tributary), its estuary, and coastal South China Sea (SCS) in order to evaluate how archaeal ecological function might change along the salinity gradient. Pyrosequencing of the 16S rDNA gene of Archaea was performed on sediment samples from Feilaixia Dam on the North River tributary to Wanshan islands, which have a salinity range of 0.1 to 31.2?‰. Consistent with the salt tolerance of cultivated representatives, methanogens in the genera Methanoregula, Methanosaeta, and Methanosarcina and Nitrososphaera within Thaumarchaeota of the ammonia-oxidizing Archaea (AOA) were abundant in freshwater sediments of the North River tributary, whereas the marine-associated genera Methanococcoides and Nitrosopumilus were the most abundant methanogens and AOA, respectively, in the estuary and coastal SCS. However, the percentages of total methanogens decreased and Thaumarchaeota increased with salinity, respectively. The phylum Crenarchaeota was largely represented by class-level lineages with no cultivated representatives, which collectively were more abundant in the estuary and coastal SCS in comparison to freshwater sites. This study indicates that salinity is the dominating factor affecting archaeal community structure and ecological function from the North River tributary of the Pearl River, its estuary, and coastal SCS, which is consistent with salinity control on microbial diversity in other regions of the world.  相似文献

Organic carbon degradation experiments were carried out using flow-through reactors with sediments collected from an intertidal freshwater marsh of an eutrophic estuary (The Scheldt, Belgium). Concentrations of nitrate, nitrite, dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), dissolved organic carbon, methane, dissolved cations (Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+ and K+), total dissolved Fe, phosphate and alkalinity were measured in the outflow solutions from reactors that were supplied with or without the terminal electron acceptor nitrate. Organic carbon mineralization rates were computed from the release rates of DIC after correcting for the contribution of carbonate mineral dissolution. The experiments ran for several months until nitrate reducing activity could no longer be detected. In the reactors supplied with nitrate, 10–13% of the bulk sedimentary organic carbon (SOC) was mineralized by the end of the experiments. In reactors receiving no nitrate, only 3–9% of the initial SOC was mineralized. Organic matter utilization by nitrate reducers could be described as the simultaneous degradation of two carbon pools with different maximum oxidation rates and half-saturation constants. Even when nitrate was supplied in non-limiting concentrations about half of the carbon mineralization in the reactors was due to fermentative processes, rather than being coupled to nitrate respiration. Fermentation may thus be responsible for a large fraction of the DIC efflux from organic-rich, nearshore sediments.  相似文献

The estuary of the River Elbe between Hamburg and the North Sea (Germany) is a sink for contaminated sediment and suspended particulate matter (SPM). One major concern is the effect of human activities on the hydrodynamics, particularly the intensive dredging activities in this area that may result in remobilization of sediment-bound pollutants. The aim of this study was to identify pollutants contributing to the toxicological risk associated with re-suspension of sediments in the Elbe Estuary by use of an effect-directed analysis that combines chemical and biological analyses in with specific fractionation techniques.Sediments were collected from sites along the Elbe Estuary and a site from a small harbor basin of the Elbe Estuary that is known to be polluted. The sixteen priority EPA-PAHs were quantified in organic extracts of sediments. In addition, dioxin equivalents of sediments were investigated by use of the 7-ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase assay with RTL-W1 cells and the Ah receptor-mediated luciferase transactivation assay with H4IIE-luc cells.Quantification of the 16 priority PAHs revealed that sediments were moderately contaminated at all of the sites in the Elbe River Estuary (<0.02–0.906 µg/g dw). Sediments contained relatively small concentrations of dioxin equivalents (Bio-TEQ) with concentrations ranging from 15.5 to 322 pg/g dw, which were significantly correlated with dioxin equivalents calculated based on toxicity reference values and concentrations of PAH. The concentration of Bio-TEQ at the reference site exceeded 200,000 pg/g dw. In a potency balance the 16 PAHs explained between 47 and 118% of the Bio-TEQ in the luciferase assay, which can be explained by the constant input of PAHs bound to SPM from the upper course of the Elbe River into its estuary. Successful identification of a significant portion of dioxin-like activity to priority PAHs in complex environmental samples such as sediments has rarely been reported.  相似文献

Summary Tributyltin (TBT) and its degradation products dibutyltin (DBT), monobutyltin (MBT) and SnIV were toxic toPseudomonas fluorescens SHC-6 andSerratia sp. Gil-1 with EC50 values in the range of 10–3 to 10–4M. These four compounds were negative chemotactic agents forP. fluorescens, and the butyltins were negatively chemotactic forSerratia sp. at concentrations over four orders of magnitude lower than the EC50 values.l-Aspartate was a positive chemotactic agent for both organisms. TBT, DBT and MBT negated the effect ofl-aspartate onP. fluorescens but not onSerratia sp. Thus, TBT has the potential to affect microbial populations at concentrations much lower than those which prevent growth, and degradation of TBT does not always detoxify it. SnCl4 was less toxic than TBT or DBT to these organisms and it was not chemotactic forSerratia sp. Gil-1. Tributylamine and tributylphosphate were less than 1/10th as toxic as TBT and they did not have a chemotactic effect on either organism at concentrations at which TBT had a significant effect. Therefore, both the Sn-and butyl-moieties contribute to the toxic and chemotactic properties of TBT.  相似文献
