The level of fluctuating asymmetry (FA), which is defined as random deviations from perfect bilateral symmetry in the morphological traits of an organism, increases with increasing developmental instability, and it may be used as an indicator of environmental and/or genetic stresses. This study attempted to relate FA levels in the opercular plates of the barnacle Amphibalanus (Balanus) amphitrite with shore height and body trace metal concentrations. Barnacles were collected from both low and mid shores at six coastal locations with various degrees of marine pollution in Hong Kong. Four opercular traits, namely scutum length, tergum length, scutum width, tergum width were measured in the specimen while concentrations of five common trace metals (Cd, Cu, Cr, Mn and Zn) were determined in their body tissues using inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrophotometry. Among the four traits, only tergum length and scutum width fulfilled the assumption of FA while their measurement errors were low. Across all sites, mid-shore A. amphitrite consistently exhibited a significantly higher FA level in scutum width than that in low-shore barnacles, but FA levels in tergum length were similar between the two shore heights. These results suggested that FA was trait-dependent, and mid-shore barnacles were possibly under high physical stress, such as desiccation and high temperature, leading to high developmental instability. Although no positive association was observed between FA and metal contamination in low-shore A. amphitrite, FA level in tergum length significantly increased with decreasing body concentration of manganese (Mn) in these barnacles. Such a negative relationship may be explained by the mechanism of bioaccumulation and physiological role of Mn in A. amphitrite with respect to the formation of barnacle shell plates. Rates of uptake from solution and assimilation efficiencies of the trace metals Ag, Cd and Zn were investigated in the barnacle Balanus amphitrite after exposure in the laboratory for 19 days to low and high doses of added Ag and Cd in a diatom (Thalassiosira weissflogii) diet, the major route of metal uptake in barnacles. The hypothesis under test was that acute metal pre-exposure would affect the assimilation efficiency (AE) of that and other metals and their rate of uptake from solution. It was found that pre-exposure of the barnacles to atypically high dietary challenges of Cd and Ag did not cause changes in the rates of uptake of Cd, Ag or Zn from solution. Similarly, there was no clear consistent effect of dietary pre-exposure to Cd or Ag on the assimilation efficiency of Cd, Ag or Zn. The efflux rates of the metals were also comparable following the acute dietary exposure. Subcellular fractionation data indicated that the majority of the three metals were partitioned in the insoluble fraction, with very little in the soluble fraction consisting of metallothionein-like proteins and other (heat-sensitive) proteins. The lack of induction of increased Cd or Ag AE after pre-exposure in barnacles contrasts with results for mussels; this inconsistency is interpreted to result from differences in physiological accumulation patterns, the barnacles relying to an extreme extent on insoluble detoxification.  相似文献

This work discusses the simultaneous use of barnacles C. montagui and P. pollicipes as biomonitors of metal (Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, and Zn) contamination in the northwest (NW) coast of Portugal during the four seasons of 2011. The metal concentrations in soft tissues of both barnacles species, metal bioaccumulation factors (BAFs), and ecological quality classifications of coastal waters are presented. The most and the least metal-contaminated locations were, respectively, location 5 (“Cabo do Mundo”) and location 10 (“Moledo”). The most and the least metal-contaminated seasons of 2011 were, respectively, autumn and winter. Temporal comparisons with previous works of 2009–2011 showed that C. montagui bioaccumulated Cd, Cr, and Fe at higher rates and P. pollicipes accumulated more Zn besides Cd and Fe. In addition, global mean BAFs showed that the best season to collect both barnacle species for metal contamination assessment/monitoring purposes in future works would be spring and that P. pollicipes would be the best barnacle species to monitor metals. In terms of ecological quality classification, all NW coast of Portugal should be classified as “Class III – Remarkably Polluted” due the high concentrations of Zn found in barnacles species during the four seasons of 2011. This work suggested that both barnacle species are suitable species to be included in the Portuguese Environmental Specimen Banks under European Marine Strategy Framework Directive 2008/56/EC.  相似文献

The concentration and bioavailability of Ni, Cu, Cd, Zn, and Pb in the sediments and leaves of grey mangrove, Avicennia marina, were studied throughout Sirik Azini creek (Iran) with a view to determine heavy metals bioavailability, and two methods were used. Results show that Zn and Ni had the highest concentrations in the sediments, while Cd and Cu were found to have the lowest concentrations in the sediments. Compared to the mean concentrations of heavy metals in sedimentary rock (shales), Zn and Cu showed lower concentration, possibly indicating that the origin of these heavy metals is natural. A geo-accumulation index (I geo) was used to determine the degree of contamination in the sediments. I geo values for Zn, Cu, Pb, and Ni showed that there is no pollution from these metals in the study area. As heavy metal concentrations in leaves were higher than the bioavailable fraction of metals in sediments, it follows that bioconcentration factors (leaf/bioavailable sediment) for some metals were higher than 1.  相似文献

Abstract

Hydroponic, greenhouse and field experiments were conducted to explore the potential of pokeweed (Phytolacca americana L.) to accumulate Zn and Cd from nutrient solutions and contaminated soils. The hydroponic results confirmed that this native species is a strong Zn and Cd bioaccumulator that does not experience severe phytotoxicity until quite high root and shoot concentrations, approaching 4000 and 1600?mg?kg?1 of Zn, and 1500 and 500?mg?kg?1 of Cd, respectively. These high Zn and Cd concentrations were accompanied by increased sulfur and lower manganese in both shoots and roots. However, in field and greenhouse trials with soils historically contaminated by a number of heavy metals including Zn and Cd, concentrations of Zn and Cd in shoots of P. americana reached concentrations less than 30% and 10%, respectively, of those achieved with hydroponics. The main constraint to phytoremediation of soils by P. americana was the low concentrations of Zn and Cd in soil solution. Pretreatment of the metal-contaminated soil by oxalic acid increased soluble Cd and Zn but failed to increase plant uptake of either metal, a possible result of higher solubility of competing metal ions (Cu, Mn) or low bioavailability of Cd and Zn-oxalate complexes.  相似文献

The concentrations of Fe, Zn, Cu, Cd, Mn, Pb, and Ni were determined in the hepatopancreas, muscle tissue, and carapace of the grass shrimp Pandalus kessleri from the coastal waters of the Lesser Kurilskaya Ridge. Sex reversal of the grass shrimp, which is a proterandrous hermaphrodite, had a marked influence on the concentrations of such metals as Fe, Cu, Cd, and Mn. The levels of Cd in the hepatopancreas of grass shrimp exceeded maximum permissible concentrations for seafood at all the stations studied. The main factors determining the metal levels in P. kessleri from the investigated locations are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract

Metal fractionation is a powerful tool for studying the mobility, bioavailability and toxicity of metals in sediments and soils. A seven-step sequential extraction technique was used to determine the potential mobility of selected heavy metals (Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Pb, Cd and Ni) in the sediments of Lake Naivasha. Results indicate that residual fraction was the most important phase for the elements Fe, Mn, Cu and Zn. However, Pb and Cd are highly enriched in the non-residual phases. Nickel on the other hand was distributed evenly between the non-residual and the residual fractions.

The total concentrations of the heavy metals suggested a decreasing order of iron ?> manganese ? zinc > nickel > copper ? lead > cadmium. However, the detailed sequential extraction data indicated an order of release or mobility of cadmium > lead ? nickel ? zinc > manganese > copper > iron. The high percentage of Cd and Pb in the mobile fractions suggests high bioavailability of these two elements in the study area and maybe a pointer to anthropogenic input of the two elements in the study area.  相似文献

The concentrations of metals (Mn, Pb, Fe, Zn, Cu, Cd,Co, Ni, Cr, Na, K, Ca, Mg) were determined in thegreen alga Ulva rigida, in the sediment andseawater of Thermaikos Gulf (Greece) during monthlysamplings in 1994–1995. This Gulf is the recipientof domestic and industrial effluents. Pb, Fe, Cu, Coand Cr concentrations in U. rigida at the studyarea were higher than those 13 years earlier andapparently came from different sources than those forZn, Cd and Ni. The relative abundance of metals inthe alga decreased in the order: Mg > Na > K >Ca > Pb > Fe > Mn > Zn > Cr, Cu > Ni >Co > Cd. Only Cu concentrations in the alga fromKalochori and Cd ones from Viamyl showed significantseasonal changes. Cu and Cd concentrations ingeneral followed the same pattern of variation, withminimum values in winter-spring. This pattern isdiscussed in relation to growth dynamics and tissueage. Only Pb concentrations in the alga showed asignificant positive correlation with concentrationsin the seawater. There were both positive andnegative correlations among some metals in the alga. It is concluded that U. rigida can be used as anindicator species, especially for Pb.  相似文献

The plasmas of breast cancer patients and healthy donors were analyzed for selected trace metals by a flame atomic absorption spectrophotometric method. In the plasma of breast cancer patients, mean concentrations of macronutrients/essential metals, Na, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, and Zn were 3584, 197.0, 30.80, 6.740, 5.266, and 6.170 ppm, respectively, while the mean metal levels in the plasma of healthy donors were 3908, 151.0, 72.40, 17.70, 6.613, and 2.461 ppm, respectively. Average concentrations of Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sb, Sr, and Zn were noted to be significantly higher in the plasma of breast cancer patients compared with healthy donors. Very strong mutual correlations (r > 0.70) in the plasma of breast cancer patients were observed between Cd–Pb, Cr–Li, Li–K, Li–Cd, K–Cr, Li–Pb, Cr–Co, Cu–Ni, Co–K, Cd–K, and K–Pb, whereas, Al–Cr, Ca–Zn, Cd–Sb, Cd–Zn, Ca–Mg, Fe–Zn, and Na–Mn exhibited strong relationships (r > 0.60) in the plasma of healthy donors. The cluster analysis revealed considerably different apportionment of trace metals in the two groups of donors. The average metal concentrations of different age groups of the two donor categories were also evaluated, which showed the build-up of Al, Cd, Co, Cr, Mn, Li, Pb, Sb, and Zn in the plasma of breast cancer patients. The role of some trace metals in carcinogenesis is also discussed. The study indicated appreciably different patterns of metal distribution and correlation in the plasma of breast cancer patients in comparison with the healthy population.  相似文献

Water and muscle tissue samples from two morphotypes of the African large barb Labeobarbus intermedius collected from three sites in Lake Hawassa in 2012–2013 were analysed for eight heavy metals, including Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn. Five metals (Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni and Zn) were detected in fish muscle samples, whereas only Cr, Cu and Ni were detected in water samples. Of the five metals detected in the muscle samples, Cu and Zn were present in higher concentrations in the golden morphotype, whereas Cr, Mn and Ni were found in higher concentrations in the silver morphotype. Bioaccumulation factor (BAF) values indicated that Cr, Cu and Ni have a tendency to accumulate in fish muscle in amounts exceeding those in water. In both morphotypes the highest concentrations of Zn and Mn were detected at the Hospital site, whereas the concentrations of Cr, Cu and Ni were highest at the Tikur Wuha site. Chromium, Cu and Ni concentrations recorded in fish muscle at all sampling sites exceeded the safe limits recommended by FAO/WHO and UNESCO, suggesting that water and fish from Lake Hawassa are contaminated with heavy metals originating from factories, a hospital and agricultural activities in proximity to the lake.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to determine tolerance of plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) in different concentrations of Cu, Cr, Co, Cd, Ni, Mn, and Pb and to evaluate the PGPR-modulated bioavailability of different heavy metals in the rhizosphere soil and wheat tissues, grown in saline sodic soil. Bacillus cereus and Pseudomonas moraviensis were isolated from Cenchrus ciliaris L. growing in the Khewra salt range. Seven-day-old cultures of PGPR were applied on wheat as single inoculum, co-inoculation and carrier-based biofertilizer (using maize straw and sugarcane husk as carrier). At 100 ppm of Cr and Cu, the survival rates of rhizobacteria were decreased by 40%. Single inoculation of PGPR decreased 50% of Co, Ni, Cr and Mn concentrations in the rhizosphere soil. Co-inoculation of PGPR and biofertilizer treatment further augmented the decreases by 15% in Co, Ni, Cr and Mn over single inoculation except Pb and Co where decreases were 40% and 77%, respectively. The maximum decrease in biological concentration factor (BCF) was observed for Cd, Co, Cr, and Mn. P. moraviensis inoculation decreases the biological accumulation coefficient (BAC) as well as translocation factor (TF) for Cd, Cr, Cu Mn, and Ni. The PGPR inoculation minimized the deleterious effects of heavy metals, and the addition of carriers further assisted the PGPR.  相似文献

Tajan River is among the most significant rivers of the Caspian Sea water basin. In this study, the concentration of Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Cd, and Zn were determined in brain, heart, liver, gill, bile, and muscle of Rutilus frisii kutum which has great economic value in the Mazandaran state. Trace element levels in fish samples were analyzed by means of atomic absorption spectrometry. Nearly all non-essential metals levels (Ni, Pb, Cd) detected in tissues were higher than limits for fish proposed by FAO/WHO, EU, and TFC. Generally, non-essential metals (Ni, Pb) were so much higher in muscle than the essential metals (Cu, Zn, and Mn) except Fe, which was higher than other metals in nearly all parts, except in gills. Fe distribution pattern in tissues was in order of heart > brain > liver > muscle > bile > gill. Distribution patterns of metal concentrations in the muscle of fish as a main edible part followed the sequence: Fe > Pb > Ni > Cu > Mn > Zn > Cd.  相似文献

Abstract

Taihu Lake is one of the most important water sources in the economically developed central-eastern part of China, and metal pollution is a major concern for the lake. The distribution and bioavailability of Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, Sb and Zn were analysed in undifferentiated bottom sediments and in various particle-size fractions of the sediment from different parts of the lake. The average concentration of total metals in undifferentiated sediments ranged from 0.86 mg kg-1 (Cd) to 95.45 mg kg-1 (Zn) for the entire lake, with the highest concentrations in Zhushan Bay. The concentration of heavy metals was higher in extremely fine sands (0.064–0.125 mm) and fine sands (0.125–0.25 mm) than in other fractions. Sequential extractions showed that Cu, Zn and Cd were the most bioavailable accounting for 55.6%, 38.7% and 30.0% of their total concentration, respectively. However, the bioavailable proportion of many metals was not significantly different between grain grades except for Cu and Zn, which were higher in silts (<0.064 mm) than in other grades. Compared with the background values of local soils, the concentration of Zn, Cd, Cu, Pb and Sb was higher, indicating enrichment in the sediment. From ecological safety concerns, Zn, Cd and Cu should be examined closely because of their higher bioavailabilty in the sediment.  相似文献

The concentrations of metals, viz., Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, and Ni, were investigated in brown algae of the genus Sargassum collected in the coastal waters of Nha Trang Bay (South China Sea). Metal concentrations in algae growing in the zone of influence of the city of Nha Trang were higher than those in macrophytes collected to the south and north of the city. Similar levels of Cu and Fe concentrations were observed in macrophytes from the urbanized coastal areas of Nha Trang Bay and in algae from the Peter the Great Bay (Sea of Japan). This is suggestive of comparable metal inputs from the anthropogenic sources of the cities of Nha Trang and Vladivostok (Peter the Great Bay). However, the concentrations of Pb, Ni, and Cd in algae from the coastal waters of Nha Trang Bay were lower than in macrophytes from the inshore zone of Vladivostok. The high level of pollution of sea water with Zn compounds near Nha Trang was local. The metal levels in macrophytes from background areas reflect the geochemical features of the environment. Sargassum algae from Nha Trang Bay had lower concentrations of Zn, Cd, and Ni and higher concentrations of Mn than algae from Peter the Great Bay. The background concentrations of Cu, Pb, and Fe in macrophytes from both bays were virtually the same.  相似文献

Accumulation of different metals and metalloids was assessed in two vegetables radish (Raphanus sativus L.) and spinach (Spinacea oleracea L.) irrigated with domestic wastewater in the peri-urban areas of Khushab City, Pakistan. In general, the metal and metalloid concentrations in radish and spinach were higher at site-II treated with sewage water than those found at site-I treated with canal water. In case of radish at both sites the levels of metals (Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Mo, Cd, and Pb) were below the permissible level except those of Mn, Ni, Mo, Cd, and Pb. At both sites, the transfer factor ranged from 0.047–228.3 mg kg?1 with Cr having the highest transfer factor. The metal pollution index in soil was in the following order: As > Fe > Ni > Zn > Cd > Mo > Se > Co > Pb > Mn > Cr > Cu, respectively. While in case of spinach at both sites, the concentrations of metals and metalloids in vegetable samples irrigated with canal and sewage water were observed below the permissible level except Mn, Ni, Zn, Mo, and Pb. At both sites, the transfer factor ranged from 0.038–245.4 mg kg?1 with Cr having the highest transfer factor. The metal pollution index in soil was in the following order: Cd > Ni > Co > Se > Mn > Zn > Mo > Pb > Fe > Cr > As > Cu, respectively.  相似文献

The distribution of heavy metals (Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Pb, Ni and Cd) were investigated in various organs and tissues of striped dolphin, Stenella coeruleoalba. The animals were caught alive at Taiji, on the coast of Kii Peninsula, during the open season in December 1978. Determination of the metals was made by atomic absorption spectrophotometry and significant differences of metal concentration in the positions of the muscle, blubber and skin, respectively, were observed. The front ventral muscle of matured dolphins showed the highest concentrations of Zn and Cd and lowest Fe when compared to other parts of the muscle. Most of the metals recorded relatively low concentrations in melon rather than in the other lipid layers of blubber. In skin tissue, the concentrations of Fe, Mn and Zn were significantly higher in black-colored skin than in white skin. Moreover, a difference in the concentrations of metals according to bone position was observed. In general, high concentrations of most of the metals were found in liver, kidney and bone, with low concentrations in brain and the lipid layer of blubber. Furthermore, relatively high concentrations of Cu, Mn and Zn were found in skin, and for Mn, Zn, Ni and Cd it was likewise in pancreas and the reproductive organs. Based upon these results, the nature of the organ(s) of a dolphin that has to be selected for ecological and hygienic comparison was discussed.  相似文献

Total metal analysis and metal speciation of sand fraction of Nigerian oil sands were done to extract and partition heavy metals into six operationally defined fractions in order to assess environmental and health implications of the oil sand development. Soxhlet extraction of bitumen from the oil sand was done using toluene. Traces of water and extracting solvent were removed at 70°C from the sand fraction using oven. Elemental analysis was performed by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry. The heavy metals except Cu have low Pollution index values. Negative geo-accumulation index was obtained for the metals except Cu, indicating that the oil sands were uncontaminated with the metals. Strong and significant positive correlations existed between Fe/Pb, Zn/Cu, Cd/Pb, Ni/Cd, Ni/Pb, Cd/Fe, Ni/Fe and Cr/Zn, while strong and significant negative correlations existed between Mn/Pb and As/Mn, indicating common sources or chemical similarities and vice versa. T-test results indicated significant differences between the concentrations of the metals. Cross-plot analysis showed strong positive correlation between the sand fraction and Nigerian bitumen. Speciation analysis indicated highest and lowest indices of metal mobility for Zn and Pb, respectively. This study concluded that the sand fraction may not pose any environmental risks from elemental point of view.  相似文献

Heavy metals were assessed in four species of sea turtles from the Baja California Peninsula, Mexico, representing the first report of heavy metal concentrations in tissues of post-yearling sea turtles from the Eastern Pacific. Concentrations of Cd measured in C. mydas kidney (653 μg/g dry wt) were the highest ever reported for any sea turtle species. Cd accumulated preferentially in kidney and the ratios of kidney to liver Cd in Baja California turtles were among the highest reported for sea turtles globally. Zn, Ni, and Mn concentrations were also significantly higher in kidney than other tissues, while Cu and Fe were greatest in liver, and all metals were lowest in muscle. With the exception of one value (69.9 μg/g in kidney of C. caretta), Pb was low in all tissues from Baja California. In comparisons across species, kidney of C. mydas had greater Zn and Ni concentrations as compared to other species, although there was no difference in liver metal levels among the species. Positive correlations were detected in the concentrations of Cd, Cu and Ni with the straight carapace length of C. caretta.  相似文献

This study investigated the concurrent accumulation of eight heavy metals by two floating aquatic macrophytes (Lemna minor and Azolla filiculoides) cultivated in ambient media and blended wastewaters in the semiarid regions of Ethiopia. Both species accumulated heavy metals in varying degrees with a significant concentration gradient within the immediate water media. Highest bioconcentration factor (BCF) was determined for Mn and Fe in both plants. Results revealed that L. minor was high phytoaccumulator for Fe, Mn, Zn, and Co but moderate for Cd, Cu, Ni, and Cr. On the other hand, A. filiculoides was a high accumulator for Fe, Mn, Zn, and Cu, but its potency was moderate for Co, Cr, and Ni, but lower for Cd. Both species exhibited significant difference in accumulating Co, Zn, and Mn (p < 0.05). In general, the BCFs for both plants were comparable within the same treatment. In this study, stronger associations between the heavy metal concentrations in the plant tissues and in the grown water media were observed for A. filiculoides.  相似文献
