A discrete-time population model with two age classes is studied which describes the growth of biennial plants in a randomly varying environment. A fraction of the oldest age class delays its flowering each year. The solution of the model involves products of random matrices. We calculate the exact mean and variance of the long-run geometric growth rate assuming a gamma distribution for the random number of offspring per flowering plant after one year. It is shown, both by analytical calculation and numerical examples, that it is profitable for the population to delay its flowering, in the sense that the average growth rate increases and the extinction probability decreases. The optimal values of the flowering fraction depend upon the environmental and model parameters.  相似文献

采用随机矩阵理论方法研究了肝癌的基因表达网络。通过标准误差分析,得到了从富含噪声的肝癌基因网络中分离出真实肝癌基因网络的、去躁最充分的关联系数,分析了由此获得的基因表达网络的13个基因功能模块,发现这些模块与肝癌的产生和发展有密切关系。基于随机矩阵理论的方法克服了以往模块识别方法带有主观因素且不能去除噪声因子的缺陷,是一种有效去除随机噪声、识别基因模块、简化基因网络的方法。由于基因数目的众多及细胞生物过程的复杂性,从整体的角度系统研究肝癌基因表达谱,对理解肝癌分子机制和探索新的治疗方法有重要的现实意义。  相似文献

Since the work of Robert May in 1972, the local asymptotic stability of large ecological systems has been a focus of theoretical ecology. Here we review May's work in the light of random matrix theory, the field of mathematics devoted to the study of large matrices whose coefficients are randomly sampled from distributions with given characteristics. We show how May's celebrated “stability criterion” can be derived using random matrix theory, and how extensions of the so-called circular law for the limiting distribution of the eigenvalues of large random matrix can further our understanding of ecological systems. Our goal is to present the more technical material in an accessible way, and to provide pointers to the primary mathematical literature on this subject. We conclude by enumerating a number of challenges, whose solution is going to greatly improve our ability to predict the stability of large ecological networks.  相似文献

In this paper we consider the competing risks model where the risks may not be independent. We assume both fixed and random censoring. The random censoring mechanism could have either a parametric or a non-parametric form. The life distributions and the parametric censoring distribution considered are exponential or Weibull. The expressions for the asymptotic confidence intervals for various parameters of interest under different models, using the estimated Fisher information matrix and parametric bootstrap techniques have been derived. Monte Carlo simulation studies for some of these cases have been carried out.  相似文献

In a previous paper (J. Math. Biol. 26, 199–215 (1988)) we calculated the mean and variance of the long-run geometric growth rate of a discrete-time population model with two age classes in a random environment. The formula which was used in that paper as the starting point for the computation of the variance represents only the contribution of the one-period variances. Here we supplement these results by a calculation of the exact variance. All qualitative conclusions reached before are unaffected.  相似文献

Pooling biospecimens is a well accepted sampling strategy in biomedical research to reduce study cost of measuring biomarkers, and has been shown in the case of normally distributed data to yield more efficient estimation. In this paper we examine the efficiency of pooling, in the context of information matrix related to estimators of unknown parameters, when the biospecimens being pooled yield incomplete observations due to the instruments' limit of detection. Our investigation of three sampling strategies shows that, for a range of values of the detection limit, pooling is the most efficient sampling procedure. For certain other values of the detection limit, pooling can perform poorly.  相似文献

Summary Rank‐based inference is widely used because of its robustness. This article provides optimal rank‐based estimating functions in analysis of clustered data with random cluster effects. The extensive simulation studies carried out to evaluate the performance of the proposed method demonstrate that it is robust to outliers and is highly efficient given the existence of strong cluster correlations. The performance of the proposed method is satisfactory even when the correlation structure is misspecified, or when heteroscedasticity in variance is present. Finally, a real dataset is analyzed for illustration.  相似文献

The stability of brain networks with randomly connected excitatory and inhibitory neural populations is investigated using a simplified physiological model of brain electrical activity. Neural populations are randomly assigned to be excitatory or inhibitory and the stability of a brain network is determined by the spectrum of the network’s matrix of connection strengths. The probability that a network is stable is determined from its spectral density which is numerically determined and is approximated by a spectral distribution recently derived by Rajan and Abbott. The probability that a brain network is stable is maximum when the total connection strength into a population is approximately zero and is shown to depend on the arrangement of the excitatory and inhibitory connections and the parameters of the network. The maximum excitatory and inhibitory input into a structure allowed by stability occurs when the net input equals zero and, in contrast to networks with randomly distributed excitatory and inhibitory connections, substantially increases as the number of connections increases. Networks with the largest excitatory and inhibitory input allowed by stability have multiple marginally stable modes, are highly responsive and adaptable to external stimuli, have the same total input into each structure with minimal variance in the excitatory and inhibitory connection strengths, and have a wide range of flexible, adaptable, and complex behavior.  相似文献

Confidence intervals and tests of hypotheses on variance components are required in studies that employ a random effects design. The unbalanced random two-fold nested design is considered in this paper and confidence intervals are proposed for the variance components σ2/A and σ2/B. Computer simulation is used to show that even in very unbalanced designs, these intervals generally maintain the stated confidence coefficient. The hypothesis test for σ2/A based on the lower bound of the recommended confidence interval is shown to be better than previously proposed approximate tests.  相似文献

采用随机引物PCR技术从新建细胞培养室空气中获得一段长414bp的片段,通过克隆测序及序列分析,结果表明所测序列与真养产碱杆菌主要参考菌株的同源性分别高达79%-83%,由其推导的氨基酸序列与真养产碱杆菌主要参考菌株的同源性高达86.4%-89.1%,从而确定所分离菌株为真养产碱杆菌。  相似文献

Summary Meta‐analysis is a powerful approach to combine evidence from multiple studies to make inference about one or more parameters of interest, such as regression coefficients. The validity of the fixed effect model meta‐analysis depends on the underlying assumption that all studies in the meta‐analysis share the same effect size. In the presence of heterogeneity, the fixed effect model incorrectly ignores the between‐study variance and may yield false positive results. The random effect model takes into account both within‐study and between‐study variances. It is more conservative than the fixed effect model and should be favored in the presence of heterogeneity. In this paper, we develop a noniterative method of moments estimator for the between‐study covariance matrix in the random effect model multivariate meta‐analysis. To our knowledge, it is the first such method of moments estimator in the matrix form. We show that our estimator is a multivariate extension of DerSimonian and Laird’s univariate method of moments estimator, and it is invariant to linear transformations. In the simulation study, our method performs well when compared to existing random effect model multivariate meta‐analysis approaches. We also apply our method in the analysis of a real data example.  相似文献

An algorithm to predict the level of identity by descent simultaneously at multiple loci is presented, which can in principle be extended to any number of loci. The model assumes a random mating population, with random association of haplotypes. The relationship is shown between coefficients of multi-locus identity or non-identity by descent and moments of multi-locus linkage disequilibrium. Thus, these moments can be computed from the multilocus identity or, using algorithms derived previously to predict the disequilibria moments, vice-versa. The results can be applied to predict multi-locus identity in, for example, gene mapping.  相似文献
