The larval and juvenile stages of kitsune-mebaru,Sebastes vulpes, based on 50 wild specimens collected in, the Sea of Japan, are described and illustrated, and some ecological aspects of the early life history (feeding, horizonal distribution and habitat shift) included. Preflexion larvae became extruded between 3.9–4.6 mm body length (BL) and notochord flexion occurred between 4.7–7.1 mm BL. Transformation from postflexion larvae to pelagic juventiles occurred between 13–17 mm BL. Compared with other rockfish species,S. vulpes is deep-bodied, throughout both larval and, juvenile stages. Larval and juvenileS. vulpes inhabit mainly coastal water surface layer (usually on the continental shelf), but do not occur offshore region (northwest of Oki Islands). Although someS. vulpes juveniles are associated with drifting seaweed, such clumps are not indispensable habitats for any stages. Surface-to-benthie migration of juveniles occurs at about 25 mm BL. Preflexion and flexion larvae feed mainly on copepod nauplii, and postflexion, transforming larvae and pelagic juveniles mainly on calanoid copepodites (Parracalanus parvus).  相似文献

Larval and juvenile stages of kurosoi,Sebastes schlegeli, are described and illustrated from wild specimens. Some ecological aspects of larvae and juveniles are also described. Notochord flexion occurred between 5.6–7.5 mm SL. Transformation occurred between 13–20 mm SL. Preflexion and flexion larvae ofS. schlegeli can be distinguished from similar larvae by the pigmentation of the dorsal and ventral midlines of the tail and absence of pigmentation on the ventral portion of the rectum. After notochord flexion, the dorsal and lateral regions in both larvae and pelagic juveniles were heavily pigmented, suggesting adaptation for neustonic life style. Larvae and juveniles were caught at many coastal stations, but did not occur in cooler offshore waters. Larvae smaller than 20 mm SL inhabited surface waters. Until ca. 40 mm SL, juveniles inhabited mainly surface waters (without drifting seaweed), but also used other habitats, such as the drifting seaweed, and near the sea bed. Small larvae (<7 mm SL) fed mainly on copepod nauplii. Larger larvae fed on calanoid copepodites andEvadne nordmanni. Pelagic juveniles fed mainly on fish eggs, with fish larvae also being important food items for some individuals. Most food items taken by juveniles that were associated with drifting seaweed were eggs with attaching filaments (Cololabis saira andHyporhamphus sajori), suggesting that the high density of such food items both attracts and keeps juveniles around drifting seaweed.  相似文献

Larval and juvenile development of two blenniids,Omobranchus fasciolatocepts andO. punctatus, is described using eggs collected from natural waters in Tokyo Bay and incubated in an aquarium. These larvae and juveniles are compared with those of two otherOmobranchus species,O. elegans andO. loxozonus, distributed widely in Japan.Onobranchus punctatus is characterized by a unique, pointed snout in preflexion larvae, no melanophores proximally on the lower part of the pectoral fins in flexion and postflexion larvae, and pterygiophores projecting externally as blades between the dorsal and anal fin-rays in postflexion larvae and juveniles.Omobranchus fasciolatoceps has the following characteristics: a few melanophores on the fore-and mid-brain, but none on the hind-brain in preflexion larvae; no melanophores on the cleithral symphysis in flexion and postflexion larvae; no external pterygiophore blades in postflexion larvae and juveniles; and a unique dorsal skin flap on the head in juveniles. Ontogenetic developement of dorsal and anal pterygiophores is described forO. fasciolatoceps andO. punctatus. InO. punctatus, the postero-distal part of each proximal radial projects remarkably to form the external blades between the soft fin-rays, whereas the external blades between the fin spines are formed by fusion of a dermal bone developed from the antero-distal part of each proximal radial with the adjacent distal radial.  相似文献

Effective management of the fishery resources of the Upper Mississippi River and successful mitigation of the loss of critical habitat depend in part on an understanding of the reproductive and early life history requirements of the affected fishes. However, little is known about the use of nursery areas by fishes in the river. Of the nearly 130 species identified in the adult ichthyofauna, only a few are represented proportionally in the available data on early life stages because study designs have not included consideration of the early stages, collection gears have not adequately sampled the young, and eggs and larvae of some species are difficult to sample by conventional approaches. For the species collected, information is available on seasonal variations in total densities, composition, and catch among different habitat types. However, the data are most accurate for species with buoyant early life stages, such as freshwater drum (Aplodinotus grunniens) and gizzard shad (Dorosoma cepedianum). Eggs and larvae of freshwater drum dominate collections made in the main channel, whereas other larval fishes are usually most abundant in backwater habitats. The species found there usually deposit eggs on the substrate or on vegetation. Habitat preferences (as indicated by relative abundance) often shift as development proceeds and physical and behavioral changes occur in the larvae. Only limited information is available on the distribution of larvae within habitats, but it is clear that variations within habitats are significant.  相似文献

The behavior of marine larvae during and after settlement can help shape the distribution and abundance of benthic juveniles and therefore the intensity of ecological interactions on reefs. Several laboratory choice-chamber experiments were conducted to explore sensory capabilities and behavioral responses to ecological stimuli to better understand habitat selection by “pre-metamorphic” (larval) and “post-metamorphic” (juvenile) stages of a coral reef fish (Thalassoma hardwicke). T. hardwicke larvae were attracted to benthic macroalgae (Turbinaria ornata and Sargassum mangarevasae), while slightly older post-metamorphosed juveniles chose to occupy live coral colonies (Pocillopora damicornis). Habitat choices of larvae were primarily based upon visual cues and were not influenced by the presence of older conspecifics. In contrast, juveniles selected live coral colonies and preferred those occupied by older conspecifics; choices made by juveniles were based upon both visual and olfactory cues from conspecifics. Overall, the laboratory experiments suggest that early life-history stages of T. hardwicke use a range of sensory modalities that vary through ontogeny, to effectively detect and possibly discriminate among different microhabitats for settlement and later occupation. Habitat selection, based upon cues provided by environmental features and/or by conspecifics, might have important consequences for subsequent competitive interactions.  相似文献

Tropical reef corals are expanding on Japanese temperate coasts in response to rising sea surface temperatures, and many tropical fish juveniles have been observed routinely in these coral habitats. The present study explored how offshore tropical fish larvae locate coral habitat on the temperate coasts of Japan. Settlement-stage larvae were sampled between July and October 2009–2011 with light traps anchored on coral-replete and coral-free habitats (rocky habitats) at two-level distance (distance between each habitat type was 6 km and 500 m, respectively). Larval abundance was significantly higher on the coral-dominated habitat than that on the rocky habitat at both short and long distance sites, suggesting that coral habitats attract offshore tropical fish larvae. In underwater visual survey, Chaetodontidae and Pomacentridae juveniles were more abundant in coral habitats than in rocky habitats at both the sites, and a laboratory habitat choice experiment demonstrated that these larvae showed a preference for corals rather than rocks. In contrast, densities of juvenile Mullidae did not differ between the coral and rocky habitats, and the larvae did not show a substrate preference in the habitat choice experiment. These observations suggest that habitat choice at settlement possibly accounts for the differences in settlement patterns of tropical fishes between the two habitats. Taken together, our results showed that most tropical fish larvae colonize their settlement coast at a scale of ~0.5 km, and that they may locate coral habitats after reaching a reef. Moreover, the results suggest that coral habitat expansion on temperate coasts will lead to an increase in coral-associated tropical fishes and will change assemblage structures of fishes on temperate coasts.  相似文献

Larvae and juveniles of six species of Luciogobius were collected at Aritsu Beach on Okinawa Island using a small seine. Postflexion larvae were dominant during sampling and were collected when they approached the shoreline adjacent to or at the entrances to their adult habitats prior to settlement. Standard lengths of postflexion larvae ranged from 5.4 to 14.4 mm and varied depending on the species. The larvae occurred mainly from January to April, but some larvae were caught in October and November. Their pelagic larval durations were estimated to range from 17 to 36 days and varied depending on the species. Morphologies of field-caught larvae and juveniles and laboratory-reared juveniles were described. Six species were clearly distinguished based on fin ray and vertebral counts, proportions, body size, and pigment patterns. Although their taxonomic statuses could not be determined, it is thought that they have independent relatives in other regions.  相似文献

Temporal changes in larval fish species composition and abundance compared with other components of the seston are described in four estuarine habitats in the Atrato Delta, Colombia. In comparison with zooplankton, fish larvae and egg density and anthropogenic debris abundance were low in the South Atrato Delta. Transparency, water temperature and chlorophyll a were the major factors influencing the spatiotemporal distribution of ichthyoplankton in the delta. The most abundant fish larvae were Astyanax sp. 1, Anchovia clupeoides, Cetengraulis edentulus, Anchoa sp., Bathygbius curacao, Dormitator maculatus, Hyporhamphus sp., Atherinella blackburni, Gobiosoma sp. 1 and Menticirrhus americanus (92·8% of total abundance). Spatial temporal analysis shows that in this delta, shrub (arracachal) and grass (eneal) habitats are important for freshwater and estuarine species, whilst mudflat and mangrove are important for estuarine species and estuarine–marine species, since most flexion and post‐flexion stages of these species were found there. Anthropogenic debris density never surpassed the total ichthyoplankton density, but was ubiquitous. Shrub and mangrove habitats had higher densities of anthropogenic debris, since these are flood‐stem habitats that trap solids.  相似文献

Recruitment in marine fishes is regulated largely by the demographic changes that occur during the early life stages; therefore, a thorough understanding of early life stages is essential for predicting recruitment variability in fishes. Japanese sea bass (JSB), Lateolabrax japonicus, is a coastal marine fish distributed in East Asian coastal waters, and is regarded as highly important for commercial and recreational fisheries, for marine and brackish water aquaculture as well as for stock enhancement. JSB is a typical estuarine dependent temperate fish, which spawns in shelf areas and coastal embayments and the larvae and juveniles are dispersed and transported into shallow nearshore habitats and estuaries where they spend the early life. In this paper, we provide insight into the early life history and ecology of JSB through a revision of the available information and using the data we obtained from a relatively long-term research. We review and discuss the distribution and habitat use, food and feeding, age and growth, mortality and recruitment of larval and juvenile JSB in coastal waters around Japan. We extend our discussions in all available dimensions: habitat-specific, ontogenetic, and spatio-temporal, and highlight the importance of nursery habitats. We also discuss the implications of early life history for recruitment of JSB as well as the possible effects of climate change. At the end, we point out potential areas for future research.  相似文献

Terrestrial hermit crabs in the family Coenobitidae (genera Coenobita and Birgus) are distributed in tropical and subtropical regions. They occupy various habitats ranging from shore to inland forests, and the two shore‐dwelling species, Coenobita rugosus and C. violascens, possess different distributional characteristics on Ishigakijima Island, Ryukyu Archipelago, Japan. Coenobita rugosus is distributed throughout the coast of the island and is abundant in beach areas, whereas C. violascens has mainly been found in river mouth areas. However, very little is known about the habitats used by the early life stages of coenobitid crabs because identifying the species of recently landed early juveniles is difficult. We tested whether the species compositions of early juveniles of coenobitids differed between beach and river mouth sites on Ishigakijima Island. We collected and identified the early stage coenobitids using PCR–RFLP techniques. A total of 576 early juveniles of five Coenobita species were collected, of which 0.7% were C. brevimanus, 7.3% were C. cavipes, 0.2% were C. purpureus, 70.1% were C. rugosus, and 21.7% were C. violascens. The early juveniles of Birgus latro were not found. The early juveniles of C. rugosus occurred at both beach and river mouth sites, and they were abundant at beach sites. The early juveniles of C. violascens were only found at river mouth sites. These findings indicate that C. rugosus and C. violascens complete their life cycles on land near the localities where they land. The early juveniles of the inland‐dwelling species, C. cavipes, were also mainly collected from river mouth sites, which suggested that juveniles of C. cavipes selected landing sites near river mouth areas and then migrated into the inland forests, passing through riverside areas. Our results highlighted the importance of river mouth areas for recruitment to adult habitats by some coenobitid species.  相似文献

Galaxias maculatus, broadly distributed in the southern hemisphere, presents both diadromic and landlocked populations. The upstream migration of larvae and juveniles from the sea to freshwater habitats is a characteristic phenomenon of diadromous populations, but upstream migration has never been reported in those that are landlocked. The objective of this study was to establish the population dynamics of a peculiar riverine landlocked population that presents an upstream migration at the larvae–juvenile transition from the Piedra del Águila Reservoir to the Caleufú River (Argentina). A spawning season from September to November and the arrival of shoals of metamorphic larvae and juveniles from February to April to the adult habitat were coincidental with lacustrine landlocked populations, but not with diadromous populations. Growth rate and age at migration, 147 ± 22.6 days, were also similar to other landlocked and diadromous populations. The arrival of these shoals produced a 20‐fold increase in fish density while the two cohorts of G. maculatus overlapped in time and space. No significant differences in morphology or vertebrae number were detected when riverine and reservoir adults were compared. The great life history plasticity of G. maculatus, shown to be even greater in our results, could be the key to explain the wide distribution of this species in the southern hemisphere. Likewise, discovering this juvenile potamodromous behaviour in a landlocked population will provide a new view for the analysis of the ways of this species’ dispersion in continental waters.  相似文献

The supply of quality juveniles via land-based larviculture represents a major bottleneck to the growing finfish aquaculture industry. As the microbiome plays a key role in animal health, this study aimed to assess the microbial community associated with early larval development of commercially raised Yellowtail Kingfish (Seriola lalandi). We used qPCR and 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing to monitor changes in the microbiome associated with the development of S. lalandi from larvae to juveniles. We observed an increase in the bacterial load during larval development, which consisted of a small but abundant core microbiota including taxa belonging to the families Rhodobacteraceae, Lactobacillaceae and Vibrionaceae. The greatest change in the microbiome occurred as larvae moved from a diet of live feeds to formulated pellets, characterized by a transition from Proteobacteria to Firmicutes as the dominant phylum. A prediction of bacterial gene functions found lipid metabolism and secondary metabolite production were abundant in the early larval stages, with carbohydrate and thiamine metabolism functions increasing in abundance as the larvae age and are fed formulated diets. Together, these results suggest that diet is a major contributor to the early microbiome development of commercially raised S. lalandi.  相似文献

To examine the importance of the upper estuarine areas of Ariake Bay as a nursery ground for fish, assemblages of larvae and juveniles were compared among various aquatic habitats. The upper estuaries of the bay (the Rokkaku and Hayatsue estuaries) are brackish, highly turbid waters with high tidal velocities, and differ substantially from the Isahaya area, which has been separated from the bay by a man-made dike, to the middle estuary (the Kikuchi estuary). Abundances of larvae and juveniles were higher in the estuaries than in the open bay and Isahaya areas. Abundant species in the upper estuaries were similar to each other, but differed from those of the middle estuary. This was primarily due to larvae and juveniles of fishes that occurred almost entirely in the upper estuaries, such as Acanthogobius hasta, Boleophthalmus pectinirostris, Coilia nasus, Cynoglossus abbreviatus, Nibea albiflora, Odontamblyopus lacepedii, Trachidermus fasciatus and Tridentiger barbatus. These results suggest that the upper estuaries play an important role as nursery grounds for fishes.  相似文献

The razorback sucker (Xyrauchen texanus) is disappearing throughout its native range in the Colorado River basin of western North America. The largest remaining wild population in Lake Mohave, Arizona-Nevada, has shown no recruitment since the 1950s. Although annual spawning is successful and larvae are seasonally abundant, no juveniles have been collected in recent decades. To evaluate the potential role of food availability in determining fate of larvae, fish and zooplankton samples were taken in 1985 from the reservoir and an adjacent, isolated backwater in which larvae were naturally produced. Food availability and primary dietary constituents were similar in both habitats. Reservoir larvae selectedBosmina spp. (Cladocera) and apparently avoided Copepoda, while larvae from the backwater selectedBosmina, but avoided Rotifera. Larvae from both places showed evidence of selection for certain sizes of zooplankters, but preferred sizes differed between habitats. These differences were neither attributable to larval size nor zooplankton community structure. Nutritional factors such as type, number, or size of available foods do not explain disappearance of larval razorback suckers from Lake Mohave, since larvae survive to far greater ages and size in the backwater. Predation by introduced fishes appears a significant cause of larval mortality.  相似文献

Larvae and juveniles of the roughskin sculpin Trachidermus fasciatus were collected during four cruises in March and April 2001 to study the distribution and diet of the fish in the Chikugo estuary in the northern Ariake Bay, Japan. Sampling was conducted at seven stations covering an area approximately 30 km in length along the estuary, with salinity ranging from nearly 0 to about 30 PSU. Gut contents were analyzed by separating, identifying, and counting the prey organisms. Plankton samples were collected during each cruise to study the numerical composition and abundance of copepods in ambient water. A total of 1790 larvae and juveniles of T. fasciatus were collected; they were distributed in the five uppermost stations, covering approximately 20 km and ranging in salinity from 0.4 to 27.4 PSU. The fish fed almost exclusively on a single calanoid copepod species, Sinocalanus sinensis, which was numerically the most abundant in the ambient water at the upper part of the Chikugo River. At the lower part of the river, the fish positively selected S. sinensis while negatively selecting other species. T. fasciatus larvae experienced a high proportion of empty guts and low feeding intensity at around 9.0 mm body length, which appears to be associated with commencement of exogenous feeding. The proportion of empty guts reduced sharply at subsequent stages and was accompanied by an increase in feeding intensity. The oligohaline and mesohaline areas are important nursery grounds, and S. sinensis is an important prey copepod species for the larval and juvenile T. fasciatus in the Chikugo estuary.  相似文献

In metapopulations, the maintenance of local populations can depend on source–sink dynamics, where populations with positive growth rate seed populations with negative growth rate. The pattern and probability of successful dispersal among habitats can therefore be crucial in determining whether local populations will become rare or increase in abundance. We present here data on the dispersal strategy and population dynamics of three marine amphipods living in pen shells (Atrina rigida) in the Gulf of Mexico. The three amphipod species in this study disperse at different life stages. Neomegamphopus hiatus and Melita nitida disperse as adults, while Bemlos unicornis disperses as juveniles. The two species that disperse as adults have the highest initial population sizes when a new shell becomes available, likely caused by the arriving females releasing their brood into these recently occupied shells. This dispersal pattern results in initially higher population growth, but fewer occupied shells, as noted by their clumped distribution. In contrast, the species that disperses as juveniles accumulates more slowly and more evenly across habitats, eventually dominating the other two in terms of numerical abundance. The metapopulation dynamics of the three species seems to be highly dependent on the life history stage involved in dispersal.  The eyes of different larval stages and juveniles of Atlanta peroni are generally composed of a cornea, a lens and a retina. In juveniles a distinct pigmented shield is visible and an enormous humour is located behind the lens. Larvae have only two sensory cells and the photoreceptors are of the ciliary type. In juveniles a striking feature is the shape of the retina. It is ribbon-shaped and new sensory cells are present which are arranged in three rows. The photoreceptors are of the ciliary type as well. Contrary to the arrangement in larvae, the ciliary plasmalemma in juveniles forms numerous lamellar stacks. In accordance with the sensory cells the stacks are organized in three parallel rows. The lamellae of adjacent stacks within a row overlap each other. The latter unique feature has not yet been found in any other representative of the Heteropoda. These findings demonstrate that (a) the eyes are altered during the development from larvae into juveniles, (b) the larval sensory cells are reduced and replaced by new sensory cells in juveniles and (c) the eyes of juvenile and adult A. peroni are well adapted for their life as visual predators.
