Lloyd's equation (Lloyd, 1967 b) has been applied to the calculation of record time in the 1 500 meters foot race from VO2 max. Twenty-eight healthy male subjects participated in this investigation. Record times decrease with increasing VO2 max. The theoretical curve plotted from Lloyd's equation is consistent with this trend. Moreover, the relationship between calculated record times (TRc) and measured record times (TRm) is highly significant (TRc = 74.3 + 0.7 TRm; r = 0.883; P less than 0.001). These results validate Lloyd's equation and hypothesis.  相似文献

There are conflicting reports in the literature which imply that the decrement in maximal aerobic power experienced by a sea-level (SL) resident sojourning at high altitude (HA) is either smaller or larger for the more aerobically "fit" person. In the present study, data collected during several investigations conducted at an altitude of 4300 m were analyzed to determine if the level of aerobic fitness influenced the decrement in maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) at HA. The VO2max of 51 male SL residents was measured at an altitude of 50 m and again at 4300 m. The subjects' ages, heights, and weights (mean +/- SE) were 22 +/- 1 yr, 177 +/- 7 cm and 78 +/- 2 kg, respectively. The subjects' VO2max ranged from 36 to 60 ml X kg -1 X min -1 (mean +/- SE = 48 +/- 1) and the individual values were normally distributed within this range. Likewise, the decrement in VO2max at HA was normally distributed from 3 ml X kg-1 X min-1 (9% VO2max at SL) to 29 ml X kg-1 X min-1 (54% VO2max at SL), and averaged 13 +/- 1 ml X kg-1 X min-1 (27 +/- 1% VO2max at SL). The linear correlation coefficient between aerobic fitness and the magnitude of the decrement in VO2max at HA expressed in absolute terms was r = 0.56, or expressed as % VO2max at SL was r = 0.30; both were statistically significant (p less than 0.05).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the physical activity levels in eleven 9-10 year old boys with reference to aerobic power or lactate threshold (LT). Daily physical activity levels were evaluated from a HR monitoring system for 12 h on three different days. VO2max, VO2-HR relationship and LT were determined by the progressive treadmill test. LT was 36.7 +/- 3.1 ml X kg-1 X min-1 and 71.0 +/- 6.6% VO2max. Mean total time of activities with HR above the level corresponding to 60% VO2max (T-60%) and that above LT (T-LT) were 34 +/- 7 and 18 +/- 7 min, respectively. VO2max (ml X kg-1 X min-1) correlated significantly with T-60% (p less than 0.01), while no significant relationship was found with LT in ml X kg-1 X min-1. In conclusion, longer daily physical activities at moderate to higher intensity for preadolescent children seem to increase VO2max rather than LT.  相似文献

The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether sweat lactate secretion during exercise [approximately 70% maximum O2 consumption (VO2max), 60 min] differed in active vs. sedentary female subjects. Sweat rate, total sweat lactate secretion, and sweat lactate concentration were monitored in a group of sedentary (VO2max = 41.0 +/- 1.62 ml X kg-1 X min-1) and active (VO2max = 51.2 +/- 3.20 ml X kg-1 X min-1) women. Sweat rate was significantly (P less than 0.05) greater in the active subjects. There was a significant difference between groups in total amount of sweat lactate secreted (P less than 0.05), with the active group secreting less lactate (29.8 +/- 5.03 mmol, mean +/- SE) than the sedentary group (50.2 +/- 6.61 mmol). Concomitant with the lower total sweat lactate secretion in the active subjects was a significantly (P less than 0.05) more dilute sweat lactate concentration (42.6 +/- 14.08 vs. 100.4 +/- 32.37 mM). In these female subjects, sweat lactate concentration was inversely correlated (r = -0.79, P less than 0.01, n = 10) to sweat rate. It is concluded that total sweat lactate loss is significantly less in active than in sedentary women and that the active subjects secrete a greater quantity of lactate dilute sweat.  相似文献

Longitudinal alterations in anaerobic threshold (AT) and distance running performance were assessed three times within a 4-month period of intensive training, using 20 male, trained middle-distance runners (19-23 yr). A major effect of the high intensity regular intensive training together with 60- to 90-min AT level running training (2 d X wk-1) was a significant increase in the amount of O2 uptake corresponding to AT (VO2 AT; ml O2 X min-1 X kg-1) and in maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max; ml O2 X min-1 X kg-1). Both VO2 AT and VO2max showed significant correlations (r = -0.69 to -0.92 and r = -0.60 to -0.85, respectively) with the 10,000 m run time in every test. However, further analyses of the data indicate that increasing VO2 AT (r = -0.63, P less than 0.05) rather than VO2max (r = -0.15) could result in improving the 10,000 m race performance to a larger extent, and that the absolute amount of change (delta) in the 10,000 m run time is best accounted for by a combination of delta VO2 AT and delta 5,000 m run time. Our data suggest that, among runners not previously trained over long distances, training-induced alterations in AT in response to regular intensive training together with AT level running training may contribute significantly to the enhancement of AT and endurance running performance, probably together with an increase in muscle respiratory capacity.  相似文献

This study examined the effects of a 15-day cessation of training on maximal oxygen consumption and selected physiological variables (maximal heart rate, cardiac output [Q], stroke volume [SV], arteriovenous oxygen difference [(a-v)O2 diff], blood plasma concentration) in 15 women middle-distance competitive runners (.VO2max: 49.8 +/- 1.1 ml.kg(-1).min(-1)). Subjects were randomly assigned to a cessation training (CT, n = 7) or maintenance training (MT, n = 8) group and tested every 5 days. Q was measured by CO2 rebreathing from which SV and (a-v)O2 diff were calculated. No significant changes were found at day 5. After 10 days there was a significant decrement in .VO2max (3.8 ml.kg(-1).min(-1)) in the CT group, being significantly lower than MT but no changes thereafter in any physiological variables. Performance (2,400 m) times did not change for MT but was significantly slower (21.5 +/- 7.1 seconds) for the CT group after 15 days, corresponding to the 7.8% decrease in .VO2max. These findings suggest that in competitive women middle-distance runners, actual performance decrements found after 15 days of CT most likely are due to declines in .VO2max.  相似文献

Twenty-seven children (age 7-17 years) with varying degrees of blindness but with no other known disorder were assessed for physical fitness. Twenty-seven randomly selected children with normal eyesight were also assessed. Maximum oxygen uptake (VO2max) was measured directly during a progressive exercise test on a treadmill. There was a significant and substantial reduction in VO2max in totally blind children (mean +/- standard deviation 35.0 +/- 7.5 ml X min-1 X kg-1) compared with normal children (45.9 +/- 6.6 ml X min-1 X kg-1). Partially sighted children had a significant but smaller reduction in VO2max. Fitness assessed by a step-test was significantly reduced in the visually impaired children, and skin-fold thickness was also significantly greater in totally blind children. The level of habitual physical activity for each child, as assessed by a questionnaire, correlated with VO2max (r = 0.53, p less than 0.0001). Blind children were significantly less active than normal children, and the difference between mean VO2max for blind and normal children became non-significant when their different activity levels were taken into account. It is concluded that totally blind children are less fit than other children at least partly because of their lower level of habitual activity.  相似文献

The stimulus-response characteristics of cardiopulmonary baroreflex control of forearm vascular resistance (FVR) were studied in five unfit [UF, maximal O2 consumption (VO2 max) = 38.5 ml X min-1 X kg-1] and six fit (F, VO2 max = 57.0 ml X min-1 X kg-1) subjects. We assessed the relationship between reflex stimulus, i.e., changes in central venous pressure (CVP) and response, i.e., FVR, during selective unloading of the cardiopulmonary mechanoreceptors with lower body negative pressure (0 to -20 mmHg). The linear relationship between FVR and CVP, the gain of this baroreflex, was significantly diminished in the F subjects, -2.42 +/- 0.57 U/mmHg, compared with the UF, -5.15 +/- 0.58 U/mmHg. Both groups, F and UF, had similar resting values for CVP and FVR; thus the diminished gain in F subjects was not simply an artifact resulting from a shift of the set point along the baroreflex stimulus-response curve. We also found a linear relationship between baroreflex gain and total blood volume (r = 0.59, P less than 0.05). We conclude that the gain of this vascular reflex is attenuated in trained individuals and is related to cardiovascular adaptations, such as an increased blood volume, associated with exercise training.  相似文献

This study investigated the effects of intensity and duration of exercise on lymphocyte proliferation as a measure of immunologic function in men of defined fitness. Three fitness groups--low [maximal O2 uptake (VO2max) = 44.9 +/- 1.5 ml O2.kg-1.min-1 and sedentary], moderate (VO2max = 55.2 +/- 1.6 ml O2.kg-1.min-1 and recreationally active), and high (VO2max = 63.3 +/- 1.8 ml O2.kg-1.min-1 and endurance trained)--and a mixed control group (VO2max = 52.4 +/- 2.3 ml O2.kg-1.min-1) participated in the study. Subjects completed four randomly ordered cycle ergometer rides: ride 1, 30 min at 65% VO2max; ride 2, 60 min at 30% VO2max; ride 3, 60 min at 75% VO2max; and ride 4, 120 min at 65% VO2max. Blood samples were obtained at various times before and after the exercise sessions. Lymphocyte responses to the T cell mitogen concanavalin A were determined at each sample time through the incorporation of radiolabeled thymidine [( 3H]TdR). Despite differences in resting levels of [3H]TdR uptake, a consistent depression in mitogenesis was present 2 h after an exercise bout in all fitness groups. The magnitude of the reduction in T cell mitogenesis was not affected by an increase in exercise duration. A trend toward greater reduction was present in the highly fit group when exercise intensity was increased. The reduction in lymphocyte proliferation to the concanavalin A mitogen after exercise was a short-term phenomenon with recovery to resting (preexercise) values 24 h after cessation of the work bout. These data suggest that single sessions of submaximal exercise transiently reduce lymphocyte function in men and that this effect occurs irrespective of subject fitness level.  相似文献

This study determined maximal O2 uptake (VO2max), maximal O2 deficit, and O2 debt in the Thoroughbred racehorse exercising on an inclined treadmill. In eight horses the O2 uptake (VO2) vs. speed relationship was linear until 10 m/s and VO2max values ranged from 131 to 153 ml.kg-1.min-1. Six of these horses then exercised at 120% of their VO2max until exhaustion. VO2, CO2 production (VCO2), and plasma lactate (La) were measured before and during exercise and through 60 min of recovery. Muscle biopsies were collected before and at 0.25, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 5, 10, 15, 20, 40, and 60 min after exercise. Muscle concentrations of adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP), phosphocreatine (PC), La, glucose 6-phosphate (G-6-P), and creatine were determined, and pH was measured. The O2 deficit was 128 +/- 32 (SD) ml/kg (64 +/- 13 liters). The O2 debt was 324 +/- 62 ml/kg (159 +/- 37 liters), approximately two to three times comparative values for human beings. Muscle [ATP] was unchanged, but [PC] was lower (P less than 0.01) than preexercise values at less than or equal to 10 min of recovery. [PC] and VO2 were negatively correlated during both the fast and slow phases of VO2 during recovery. Muscle [La] and [G-6-P] were elevated for 10 min postexercise. Mean muscle pH decreased from 7.05 (preexercise) to 6.75 at 1.5 min recovery, and the mean peak plasma La value was 34.5 mmol/l.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Distribution of blood flow in muscles of miniature swine during exercise   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
The purpose of this study was to determine how the distribution of blood flow within and among the skeletal muscles of miniature swine (22 +/- 1 kg body wt) varies as a function of treadmill speed. Radiolabeled microspheres were used to measure cardiac output (Q) and tissue blood flows in preexercise and at 3-5 min of treadmill exercise at 4.8, 8.0, 11.3, 14.5, and 17.7 km/h. All pigs (n = 8) attained maximal O2 consumption (VO2max) (60 +/- 4 ml X min-1 X kg-1) by the time they ran at 17.7 km/h. At VO2max, 87% of Q (9.9 +/- 0.5 l/min) was to skeletal muscle, which constituted 36 +/- 1% of body mass. Average total muscle blood flow at VO2max was 127 +/- 14 ml X min-1 X 100 g-1; average limb muscle flow was 135 +/- 17 ml X min-1 X 100 g-1. Within the limb muscles, blood flow was distributed so that the deep red parts of extensor muscles had flows about two times higher than the more superficial white portions of the same muscles; the highest muscle blood flows occurred in the elbow flexors (brachialis: 290 +/- 44 ml X min-1 X 100 g-1). Peak exercise blood flows in the limb muscles were proportional (P less than 0.05) to the succinate dehydrogenase activities (r = 0.84), capillary densities (r = 0.78), and populations of oxidative (slow-twitch oxidative + fast-twitch oxidative-glycolytic) fiber types (r = 0.93) in the muscles. Total muscle blood flow plotted as a function of exercise intensity did not peak until the pigs attained VO2max, although flows in some individual muscles showed a plateau in this relationship at submaximal exercise intensities. The data demonstrate that blood flow in skeletal muscles of miniature swine is distributed heterogeneously and varies in relation to fiber type composition and exercise intensity.  相似文献

We investigated which attribute or what combination of attributes would best account for distance running performance of female runners. The subjects were 30 well-trained female distance runners, aged 19 to 23 years. Anthropometric and body composition characteristics, pulmonary function characteristics, blood properties, and cardiorespiratory function characteristics were measured at rest or during submaximal and maximal exercise. Analyses of the data showed that the relationship of oxygen uptake corresponding to lactate threshold (VO2T, ml.kg-1.min-1) with each distance running performance was substantially higher as compared with the relationship of other independent variables including maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max). Furthermore, multiple regression analysis indicated that running performances in 3,000m, 5,000m, and 10,000m are best accounted for by a combination of VO2/LT (X1), fat-free weight (X2), and/or mean corpuscular volume (X3). A multiple regression equation for predicting the 5,000m (Y, s) running performance was formulated as Y = -14.75X1-3. 03X2-5.79X3 + 2282.1. We suggest that VO2max would not stand alone as a decisive factor of distance running success in female runners, and that the distance running performance could be better accounted for by a combination of several attributes relating to lactate threshold, body composition, and/or hematological status. The linear regression of the predicted running performance on the actually measured running performance can be accepted in the range of 986-1197s.  相似文献

We investigated the effect of increasing hemoglobin- (Hb) O2 affinity on muscle maximal O2 uptake (VO2max) while muscle blood flow, [Hb], HbO2 saturation, and thus O2 delivery (muscle blood flow X arterial O2 content) to the working muscle were kept unchanged from control. VO2max was measured in isolated in situ canine gastrocnemius working maximally (isometric tetanic contractions). The muscles were pump perfused, in alternating order, with either normal blood [O2 half-saturation pressure of hemoglobin (P50) = 32.1 +/- 0.5 (SE) Torr] or blood from dogs that had been fed sodium cyanate (150 mg.kg-1.day-1) for 3-4 wk (P50 = 23.2 +/- 0.9). In both conditions (n = 8) arterial PO2 was set at approximately 200 Torr to fully saturate arterial blood, which thereby produced the same arterial O2 contents, and muscle blood flow was set at 106 ml.100 g-1.min-1, so that O2 delivery in both conditions was the same. VO2max was 11.8 +/- 1.0 ml.min-1.100 g-1 when perfused with the normal blood (control) and was reduced by 17% to 9.8 +/- 0.7 ml.min-1.100 g-1 when perfused with the low-P50 blood (P less than 0.01). Mean muscle effluent venous PO2 was also significantly less (26 +/- 3 vs. 30 +/- 2 Torr; P less than 0.01) in the low-P50 condition, as was an estimate of the capillary driving pressure for O2 diffusion, the mean capillary PO2 (45 +/- 3 vs. 51 +/- 2 Torr). However, the estimated muscle O2 diffusing capacity was not different between conditions.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Six trained males [mean maximal O2 uptake (VO2max) = 66 ml X kg-1 X min-1] performed 30 min of cycling (mean = 76.8% VO2max) during normoxia (21.35 +/- 0.16% O2) and hyperoxia (61.34 +/- 1.0% O2). Values for VO2, CO2 output (VCO2), minute ventilation (VE), respiratory exchange ratio (RER), venous lactate, glycerol, free fatty acids, glucose, and alanine were obtained before, during, and after the exercise bout to investigate the possibility that a substrate shift is responsible for the previously observed enhanced performance and decreased RER during exercise with hyperoxia. VO2, free fatty acids, glucose, and alanine values were not significantly different in hyperoxia compared with normoxia. VCO2, RER, VE, and glycerol and lactate levels were all lower during hyperoxia. These results are interpreted to support the possibility of a substrate shift during hyperoxia.  相似文献

Previous work with pregnant ewes has shown that acute bouts of exercise may cause changes in plasma hormone concentrations, blood flow distribution, and maternal and fetal temperatures. However, most of these studies do not quantify the chosen exercise intensity through measurement of oxygen consumption (VO2). Therefore the purpose of this study was to statistically model the VO2 response of pregnant sheep to treadmill (TM) exercise to determine the exercise intensities (% maximal VO2) of previous studies. Ewes with either single (n = 9) or twin (n = 5) fetuses were studied from 100 to 130 days of gestation. After 1-2 wk of TM habituation, maximal VO2 (VO2max) was determined by measurements of VO2 (open flow-through method) and blood lactate concentration. VO2 was measured as a function of TM incline (0, 3, 5, and 7 degree) and speed (0.8-3.4 m/s). VO2max averaged 57 +/- 7 (SD) ml.min-1.kg-1, and peak lactate concentration during exercise averaged 22 +/- 2 mmol/l. The relationship between VO2 (ml.min-1.kg-1) and incline (INC) and speed (SP) [VO2 = 0.70(INC) + 13.95(SP) + 1.07(INC x SP) - 1.18] was linear (r2 = 0.94). Our findings suggest that most previous research used exercise intensities less than 60% VO2max and indicate the need for further research that examines the effect of exercise during pregnancy at levels greater than 60% VO2max.  相似文献

The effects of eccentric exercise on whole body protein metabolism were compared in five young untrained [age 24 +/- 1 yr, maximal O2 uptake (VO2max) = 49 +/- 6 ml.kg-1.min-1] and five older untrained men (age 61 +/- 1 yr, VO2max = 34 +/- 2 ml.kg-1.min-1). They performed 45 min of eccentric exercise on a cycle ergometer at a power output equivalent to 80% VO2max (182 +/- 18 W). Beginning 5 days before exercise and continuing for at least 10 days after exercise, they consumed a eucaloric diet providing 1.5 g.kg-1.day-1 of protein. Leucine metabolism in the fed state was measured before, immediately after, and 10 days after exercise, with intravenous L-[1-13C]leucine as a tracer (0.115 mumol.kg-1.min-1). Leucine flux increased 9% immediately after exercise (P less than 0.011) and remained elevated 10 days later, with no effect of age. Leucine oxidation increased 19% immediately after exercise and remained 15% above baseline 10 days after exercise (P less than 0.0001), with no effect of age. In the young men, urinary excretion of 3-methylhistidine per gram of creatinine did not increase until 10 days postexercise (P less than 0.05), but in the older men, it increased 5 days after exercise and remained high through 10 days postexercise (P less than 0.05), averaging 37% higher than in the young men. These data suggest that eccentric exercise produces a similar increase in whole body protein breakdown in older and young men, but myofibrillar proteolysis may contribute more to whole body protein breakdown in the older group.  相似文献

Oxygen delivery and utilization in hypothermic dogs   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
Hypothermia produces a decrease in metabolic rate that may be beneficial under conditions of reduced O2 delivery (Do2). Another effect of hypothermia is to increase the affinity of hemoglobin for O2, which can adversely affect the release of O2 to the tissues. To determine the overall effect of hypothermia on the ability of the peripheral tissues to extract O2 from blood, we compared the response to hypoxemia of hypothermic dogs (n = 8) and of normothermic controls (n = 8). The animals were anesthetized, mechanically ventilated, and paralyzed to prevent shivering. The inspired concentration of O2 was progressively reduced until the dogs died. The core temperatures of the control and hypothermic dogs were 37.7 +/- 0.3 and 30.5 +/- 0.1 degree C, respectively (P less than 0.01). The O2 consumption (VO2) of the control dogs was significantly greater than that of the hypothermic dogs (P less than 0.05), being 4.7 +/- 0.4 and 3.2 +/- 0.3 ml X min-1 X kg-1, respectively. Hypothermia produced a left shift of the oxyhemoglobin dissociation curve (ODC) to a PO2 at which hemoglobin is half-saturated with O2 of 19.8 +/- 0.7 Torr (control = 32.4 +/- 0.7 Torr, P less than 0.01). The O2 delivery at which the VO2 becomes supply dependent (DO2crit) was 8.5 ml X min-1 X kg-1 for control and 6.2 ml X min-1 X kg-1 for hypothermia. The hypothermic dogs maintained their base-line VO2's at lower arterial PO2's than control.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine whether arterial PCO2 (PaCO2) decreases or remains unchanged from resting levels during mild to moderate steady-state exercise in the dog. To accomplish this, O2 consumption (VO2) arterial blood gases and acid-base status, arterial lactate concentration ([LA-]a), and rectal temperature (Tr) were measured in 27 chronically instrumented dogs at rest, during different levels of submaximal exercise, and during maximal exercise on a motor-driven treadmill. During mild exercise [35% of maximal O2 consumption (VO2 max)], PaCO2 decreased 5.3 +/- 0.4 Torr and resulted in a respiratory alkalosis (delta pHa = +0.029 +/- 0.005). Arterial PO2 (PaO2) increased 5.9 +/- 1.5 Torr and Tr increased 0.5 +/- 0.1 degree C. As the exercise levels progressed from mild to moderate exercise (64% of VO2 max) the magnitude of the hypocapnia and the resultant respiratory alkalosis remained unchanged as PaCO2 remained 5.9 +/- 0.7 Torr below and delta pHa remained 0.029 +/- 0.008 above resting values. When the exercise work rate was increased to elicit VO2 max (96 +/- 2 ml X kg-1 X min-1) the amount of hypocapnia again remained unchanged from submaximal exercise levels and PaCO2 remained 6.0 +/- 0.6 Torr below resting values; however, this response occurred despite continued increases in Tr (delta Tr = 1.7 +/- 0.1 degree C), significant increases in [LA-]a (delta [LA-]a = 2.5 +/- 0.4), and a resultant metabolic acidosis (delta pHa = -0.031 +/- 0.011). The dog, like other nonhuman vertebrates, responded to mild and moderate steady-state exercise with a significant hyperventilation and respiratory alkalosis.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献
