The reproductive cycle and fecundity of the date mussel Lithophagalithophaga, L. a well-known, ediblespecies has been examined.Sexes are separate and the mean number of eggs per each gonadis 1.894 x 106 ± 1.044 x 106 S.D. Reproduction firstoccurs at an age of 2+years and at a shell length greater than0.9 cm. Gonad activity is annual and is observed at all ages.The sex ratio for individuals up to 7 cm is 3:1 in favour ofthe males, whereas it becomes 1:1 for individuals greater than7 cm. The release of gametes by males and females occurs almostsimultaneously and begins immediately after a decline in thehighest water temperature ( 27°C), an increase in salinity(>31) and a decrease in the dissolved oxygen (6.5 ppm). Smallpercentages of mature individuals appear during the first wintermonths thus lengthening the reproductive period. This phenomenonis attributed to the temperature difference in deeper waters,the delay in gamete release by young individuals, tide, waveaction and changes in salinity. The fecundity of Lithophagalithophaga is high because its life-cycle is adversely affectedby environmental factors such as waves and tides. Fecundityincreases with shell length, more so with total wet weight andmainly with the age of the animals. Summer seems to be the suitableseason to exploit the date mussel of shell lengths > 5 cm. Effects of temperature (15°, 20° and 25°C), O2 partialpressure (PO2=0, 1, 2, 4, and 6 kPa), and individual size(1279 mm shell length; SL) on survivorship of specimensof the non-indigenous, marine, brown mussel, Perna perna, fromTexas were investigated to assess its potential distributionin North America. Its hypoxia tolerance was temperature-dependent,survivorship being significantly extended at lower temperaturesunder all tested lethal PO2. Incipient tolerated PO2 was 4 and6 kPa at 15 and 20°C, respectively, with >50% mortalityoccurring at 25°C at all tested levels of hypoxia. PO2 hadless of an effect on survival of hypoxia than temperature. At25°C, survivorship was not different over a PO2 range of02 kPa and increased only at 4 and 6 kPa. Survivorshipwas size-dependent. Median survival times increased with increasingSL in anoxia and PO2=1 kPa, but at 2, 4 and 6 kPa,smaller individuals survived longer than larger individuals.With tolerance levels similar to other estuarine bivalve species,P. perna should withstand hypoxia encountered in estuarine environments.Thus, its restriction to intertidal rocky shores may be dueto other parameters, particularly its relatively low temperaturetolerance. The reproductive cycle of a population of Paxyodon
syrmatophorus(Meuschen, 1781), a mussel exploited for its shells
in the lowerTocantins River, Brazil, was studied between September
1997and August 1998. Monthly examination of gonad sections and
inspectionof the demibranchs of females showed that gametogenesis
takesplace all year round and that spawning occurs during the months
ofthe dry season. Gravid females were found throughout the period
betweenFebruary and September. Sexually mature mussels as small as
23mm in length were found and the smallest gravid female was 32mm in
length. The implications of the findings are discussedin relation to
the conservation and management of exploitedfreshwater mussel
populations in the region.

The sexual cycle of the cuttlefish, Sepia officinalis, fromthe northern part of the Bay of Biscay was followed over severalyears (1988 to 1990 and 1992 to 1993). Successive maturity stagesare reached at the same time regardless of site in the northernpart of the Bay. In this area, the majority of cuttlefish reproduceduring their second year of life (group II) whereas the remainderreproduce in their first year (group I). The first visible signsof sexual development concern the testis in males and the genitaltract in females. Males mature earlier than females: the firstspermatophores appear in July (group II) and October (groupI) while mature eggs appear from December (group II) and March(group I). Cellana grata is large, relatively long lived (3 years), withone winter breeding season each year which can be correlatedwith major seasonal climatic and hydro-logical events, e.g.,winter reduction in temperature and higher seas. C. grata ischaracterised by a relatively low value of mean annual reproductiveeffort (males: 23%; females: 18%). Patelloida pygmaea is small,short lived (1 year), with one spring breeding season each yearand devotes a large proportion of metabolic energy for reproduction.P. pygmaea showed a higher value of mean annual reproductiveeffort (males: 46%; females: 31%) than C. grata. Mature gonads of Cellana grata first appeared in June and itreached a peak maturity (100%) in September, remaining so untilDecember, i.e., the maturation of the gonads coincided withincreasing water temperatures, with spawning associated witha decrease in water temperature. Gonadal development by Patelloidapygmaea began in either July or August and reached a peak inDecember, remaining so until a major peak in spawning took placebetween April and May, i.e., gonad maturation coincided witha decline in water temperature, with spawning following thesubsequent increase. Limpet gonadal cycles are likely gearedto temperature and food supply. Spawning occurred between Novemberand December, when wave heights are typically 1 m higher thanin summer. Philine orientalis occurs on Hong Kong's beaches for {smalltilde}2 months each year, in May and June when it breeds, laysegg capsules and dies. It is believed to have a life span ofone year. Hoi Sing Wan, a sandy beach in the New Territoriesof Hong Kong is dominated at lower levels by the venerid bivalveTapes philippinarum, the population of which in May and June,following spring recruitment, mostly comprises juveniles. P.orientalis, occurring at a density of {small tilde} 1.m2,feeds voraciously upon these juveniles consuming, in laboratoryexperiments, a mean of 25.day1. At Hoi Sing Wan, P. orientalisappears to be highly prey specific. It is, however, known tofeed on other prey items and probably has a catholic diet, duringits annual migration from deeper to shallower sediments, accordingto the prevailing fauna. In terms of wet weight, P. orientalis consumes a mean of {smalltilde}4.4% (2.26.7%) of its body weight day1.In terms of dry weight, however, this figure increases to amean of 35.5% and one figure of 208% has been recorded. Althoughthis is because of the large body fluid content of this, essentiallyshell-less, gastropod, using a hydrostatic skeleton to achieveburrowing, such figures further attest to the voracity of thebreeding adults. This study joins others in questioning ourpresent understanding of the scale of energy budgets on suchshores, i.e., are our estimates of loss to predation grosslyunderestimated?

In Pecten maximus (L.), retractor and adductor muscles becomefunctional in the early veliger larva. The twelve-day-old veligerhas four pairs of velar retractors, three pairs of retractorsattached to the posterior body wall and an anterior adductor.The pediveliger has in addition, pedal retractor muscles anda posterior adductor. The retractors consist of striated muscle:the adductors have both smooth and striated portions. The retractorsattach near the hinge, branch to a greater or lesser extent,then attach to specific areas of the velum, posterior body walland foot. Some features of the branching and of the dispositionof points of attachment form a pattern which exhibits mirrorsymmetry about the plane between the two shell valves. Thispattern is characteristic of the species. Coexisting populations of the mussels, Perna perna and Mytilusgalloprovincialis, were monitored at two sites on the NorthAfrican coast, east of Algiers, over a five year period (19851989).While spatfalls were observed throughout the year, only themajor spring-summer recruitment, which occurred during favourableweather conditions, contributed to the renewal of both musselspecies at both sites. Very high densities (>10, 000 ind.m2) were observed at both sites, but the mussel bedswere composed principally of young and small specimens due toharvesting of the largest animals for use as bait and for humanconsumption. The maximal length observed was 75 mm in P. pernaand 49 mm in M. galloprovincialis. The life span of the specieswas low, 1224 months in P. perna and 1128 monthsin M. galloprovincialis. Biomphalaria straminea (Dunker) is a snail intermediate hostof Schistosoma mansoni Sambon which has invaded Hong Kong inrecent years from its home range in Brazil. This study examinesits distribution pattern in terms of habitat type and hydrologicalfactors. The data revealed very strong colonizing power, bothin terms of number of sites occupied as well as numerical dominanceat these sites. An inability to colonize lotic habitats mayhave been related to low levels of dissolved minerals and nutrientsbut the effect of current speed on colonization has yet to beresolved. Principal component analysis revealed that hydrological factorsimportant for colonization included high levels of dissolvedcalcium, magnesium, iron, chloride, total nitrogen, sulphateand phosphate. pH had only a secondary effect. The significanceof these findings is discussed with special reference to thelikelihood of introduction of B. straminea elsewhere, and possiblemanagement strategies. Mytilopsis sallei (Récluz) (Dreissenacea) has been introducedinto Visakhapatnam harbour, India. The normal distribution ofthe species is Central America and it is here contended thatthe species has been introduced into the Indo-Pacific via thePanama canal (opened in 1915) attached to the hulls of ships.M. allyneana (Hertlein & Hanna) with a distribution restrictedto Fiji is considered synonymous with M. sallei. The literature on M. sallei is reviewed and it is shown thatthe species has wide temperature, salinity and oxygen tolerancesand thus transport across a variety of water masses is entirelyfeasible. The species also possesses a fast rate of growth,a high fecundity and matures early. It is an opportunistic specieswhich free from the restraints that normally hold it in checkin its natural environment, poses a serious fouling threat toharbours throughout the Indo-Pacific and to the endemic fauna. The morphological adaptations of M. sallei are also describedand compared with those of Dreissena polymorpha (Pallas) inparticular and other fouling bivalves in general. The speciesis ideally adapted to life in turbid estuaries experiencingwide variations in temperature, salinity, oxygen and turbulence.A warning against further introductions is given. Gonad maturation and sexuality in Ghanaian populations of Anadarasenilis were studied by means of macroscopic examination ofthe visceral mass, microscopic examination of smears of sexualproducts and by histological methods. Sexual differentiationinto either distinct male or female, begins at a shell lengthof 1012mm. Only 1% or less have both ovary and testis.First spawnings take place at shell size 1820mm. Althoughin tidal lagoons the sex ratio is 1:1, in the adverse conditionsof closed lagoons, the male to female ratio is about 1:2. Cellana grata is a high-zoned, exposed-shore limpet with a lifespanof 3 years. Patclloida pygmaeais a low-zoned, sheltered-shorelimpet with a lifespan of I year. C. grata migrates up-shorein winter, but occurs lower on the shore in summer. This migrationis synchronized with variations in algal availability high onthe shore; such variations are, however, themselves relatedto seasonal changes in wave height. P. pygmaea is restrictedto the low shore, year round. The movements upwards in winterand downwards in summer are still evident. Algal species richnessincreased from September to reach a peak between December andMarch, and to abruptly diminish between May and June. The encrustingalgae Brachytrichia maculans, Hildenbrandia prototypus, Lithothamnionsp. and Ralfsia vcrrucosa were present year round. The timingof juvenile recruitment of C. grata and P. pygmaea was fromOctober to July and February to October, respectively. Temperaturemay be important in enhancing juvenile survival by affectingthe seasonal pattern of algal occurrence on the shore. Seasonalfluctuations in the rate of growth were recorded for both specieswith the time of fastest growth of C. grata and P. pygmaea occurringbetween October and March and September and February, respectively.Mortality of both species occurred mainly in summer. Aspects of the physiology and feeding behaviour of the scavengingsnails, Babylonia lutosa and Nassarius festivus have been studiedand compared. N. festivus has a wider physiological tolerancethan B. lutosa; upper lethal temperatures being 31.5°C and28.5°C respectively and lower lethal salinities 15.5 and11.5. N. festivus was also more resistant to desiccation. N.festivus is adapted to an intertidal environment that is morevariable than the subtidal habitat of B. lutosa. The metabolicrate of adult N. festivus was two to three times higher thanthat of adult B. lutosa, the specific oxygen consumption rateof the former being 7.91±0.49x106 mol of O2.g1wet wt.hr1. This correlates with estimates of consumptionobtained for the two animals, B. lutosa eating, on average,6.57% of its wet tissue weight per day, N. festivus 15.33%.Standardization of the data for 2 g animals of both species,however, reveals no significant difference in terms of oxygenconsumption and thus the enhanced consumption by N. festivussimply reflects its smaller size. Both species are opportunisticfeeders and can survive long periods of starvation (>100days). The feeding strategies of the two are also different,N. festivus eating faster than B. lutosa, possibly because ofthe more ephemeral nature of carrion in the intertidal. Starvationaffected the feeding behaviour of N. festivus more than B. lutosaand N. festivus was able to perceive carrion from greater relativedistances than B. lutosa. The Onchidiacea are a superfamily of mainly marine intertidal,slug-like pulmonates. Twelve genera are recognizable, and theseare redefined. Four of these genera are represented in HongKong, each by a single species, and these are recorded herein.Two of these are new; a third has not been seen since it wasoriginally figured in 1850.

The pedal glands which secrete the byssusmaterial are described, followed by an account of the morphology,structure and chemistry of the byssus itself. Because of the small size of A. crista and its scarce distribution,very little information is available concerning its life cycle.The occurrence of an unusual dense population in an experimentalpool allowed regular sampling during 3 years. A. crista displaysan annual life cycle with 3 different breeding seasons. Bothsummer and autumn generations overwinter and disappear afterspawning in the next spring.
