Female mating preference based on male nuptial coloration hasbeen suggested to be an important source of diversifying selectionin the radiation of Lake Victoria cichlid fish. Initial variationin female preference is a prerequisite for diversifying selection;however, it is rarely studied in natural populations. In clearwater areas of Lake Victoria, the sibling species Pundamiliapundamilia with blue males and Pundamilia nyererei with redmales coexist, intermediate phenotypes are rare, and most femaleshave species-assortative mating preferences. Here, we studya population of Pundamilia that inhabits turbid water wheremale coloration is variable from reddish to blue with most malesintermediate. We investigated male phenotype distribution andfemale mating preferences. Male phenotype was unimodally distributedwith a mode on intermediate color in 1 year and more blue-shiftedin 2 other years. In mate choice experiments with females ofthe turbid water population and males from a clearer water population,we found females with a significant and consistent preferencefor P. pundamilia (blue) males, females with such preferencesfor P. nyererei (red) males, and many females without a preference.Hence, female mating preferences in this population could causedisruptive selection on male coloration that is probably constrainedby the low signal transduction of the turbid water environment. We suggest that if environmental signal transduction was improvedand the preference/color polymorphism was stabilized by negativefrequency-dependent selection, divergent sexual selection mightseparate the 2 morphs into reproductively isolated species resemblingthe clear water species P. pundamilia and P. nyererei.  相似文献

Elysia viridis (Montagu) occurs naturally in populations feedingon the fleshy, siphonalean green alga Codium or on the coarse, filamentous green alga Chaetomorpha. Only about half of theE. viridis transferred from Codium to Chaetomorpha in the laboratorywere able to learn to feed on this alga. Handling time decreasedsignificantly during the learning-period. All E. viridis transferredfrom Chaetomorpha to Codium in the laboratory were able to learnto feed on the latter alga. Handling time also decreased withexperience in these animals. Ingestive conditioning occurredin animals transferred from Chaetomorpha to Codium. These animalshad to go through a learning-period again when they were offeredChaetomorpha after 6–9 weeks with Codium Ingestive conditioningwas also evident from preference experiments; animals preferredthe food they had been kept on prior to the experiments. Thesefindings are discussed in relation to optimal diet theory. (Received 14 December 1987; accepted 22 March 1988)  相似文献

Male and female sterility was induced in canola or rapeseed(Brassica napus L. cv. Westar) flowers grown under high temperatureconditions (32°C/26°C; day/night). At maturity, themajority of flower buds remained closed but had protruding stigmas. The stamens were reduced in size and the anthers showed abnormalmicrosporogenesis. The gynoecia, although normal in appearance, did not set seed and ovule development was aberrant. Flowersof the ogu CMS line of B. napus also showed similar ovular abnormalitiesunder high temperatures and male fertility was not restoredin them. The observations presented suggest that high temperaturesin the field may adversely affect the yield of canola. Temperature, male and female sterility, rapeseed, canola, Brassica napus  相似文献

The mammalian gonad arises as a bipotential primordium from which a testis or ovary develops depending on the chromosomal sex of the individual. We have previously used DNA microarrays to screen for novel genes controlling the developmental fate of the indifferent embryonic mouse gonad. Maestro (Mro), which encodes a HEAT-repeat protein, was originally identified as a gene exhibiting sexually dimorphic expression during mouse gonad development. Wholemount in situ hybridisation analysis revealed Mro to be expressed in the embryonic male gonad from approximately 11.5 days post coitum, prior to overt sexual differentiation. No significant expression was detected in female gonads at the same developmental stage. In order to address its physiological function, we have generated mice lacking Maestro using gene targeting. Male and female mice homozygous for a Mro null allele are viable and fertile. We examined gonad development in homozygous male embryos in detail and observed no differences when compared to wild-type controls. Immunohistochemical analysis of homozygous mutant testes of adult mice revealed no overt abnormalities. Expression profiling using DNA microarrays also indicated no significant differences between homozygote embryonic male gonads and controls. We conclude that Maestro is dispensable for normal male sexual development and fertility in laboratory mice; however, the Mro locus itself does have utility as a site for insertion of transgenes for future studies in the fields of sexual development and Sertoli cell function.  相似文献

Sex ratio and breeding habits of Planaxis sulcatus were studiedfor Japanese and other Indo-Pacific populations. On the coastof the Kii Peninsula, Japan, the gonad of P. sulcatus is developedfrom June through August, when pairing of the snails is observed. The females contain embryos in their brood pouches and releaseveligers. New recruits appear in autumn, grow during the nextspring and summer, and merge with the older-year cohort in sizein early autumn. The position on the shore of the first-yearand the older-year snails is lower in spring and early summerthan in other seasons. Sex ratio was significantly differentbetween populations, seemingly due to different percentagesof large snails which were mostly females. Inspection of thesamples from a wider geographic range, from Japan to India, detected various sex ratios among the localities; females weredominant in the samples composed exclusively of large individuals. The most developed embryos in the female brood pouches wereveligers. Parthenogenetic development and rearing of embryosup to crawling juveniles, which have been reported for the populationsin the inner Arabian Sea, does not seem to hold for these otherIndo-Pacific populations. Gonad maturation and sexuality in Ghanaian populations of Anadarasenilis were studied by means of macroscopic examination ofthe visceral mass, microscopic examination of smears of sexualproducts and by histological methods. Sexual differentiationinto either distinct male or female, begins at a shell lengthof 10–12mm. Only 1% or less have both ovary and testis.First spawnings take place at shell size 18–20mm. Althoughin tidal lagoons the sex ratio is 1:1, in the adverse conditionsof closed lagoons, the male to female ratio is about 1:2. Unbalancedsex ratios recorded in a population in Lagos, Nigeria, led aprevious worker to the conclusion that the species is a protandrichermaphrodite. It is argued here that hermaphroditism is an insignificant featurein A. senilis and that the species is basically gonochoristic(dioecious). * PRESENT ADDRESS: Department of Zoology, University Collegeof Swansea, Swansea SA2 8PP, Wales (Received 16 June 1981;  相似文献

On a sandy beach at Shoal Bay in Princess Royal Harbour, Albany, southwestern Western Australia, lives a small muricid gastropodthat feeds virtually monotonically on the overwhelmingly dominantresident bivalve Katelysia scalarina. Lepsiella paivae livesburied in the sand and attacks its prey within it. Because ofits small size (<13 mm shell height), bivalve prey isalso small and this study demonstrates a preference for K. scalarinaof 5 mm shell length, i.e. juveniles. Laboratory experimentsalso suggested a possible preference for attack of the rightvalve. Lepsiella paivae can and does, however, attack largerprey (up to 15 mm shell length), but cannot consume themcompletely. A second visit to Princess Royal Harbour in theAustral winter, when there was no juvenile K. scalarina present, showed L. paivae to be attacking at the sand surface, also bydrilling, the small (<4 mm) gastropod Hydrococcus brazieri(Hydrococcidae). SEM studies of experimentally determined drillholes of L. paivae show them to be of variable form, some straightsided, others bevelled (like a naticid) and <500 µmin diameter. On this sheltered Southern Ocean beach, therefore,L. paivae has specialized to attack juvenile bivalves by burrowingafter them. It can, however, attack other species opportunisticallyon the sand surface when seasonally favoured juvenile bivalveprey are not present. (Received 8 January 2005; accepted 16 March 2005)  相似文献

Underwater field observations of reproductive behaviour in Turritellacommunis Risso were made in Killary Harbour on the west coastof Ireland during May and June in both 1986 and 1987. Thesesightings are documented and complemented by temperature, salinityand oxygen measurements, population structure, sex-ratio REMOTS®sediment profile imagery data and additional laboratory experimentationand observations. The population had a density of 639.5 individuals/m2at the study site with males comprising between 62.3 to 65.6%of the sexed population. Females were larger than males, thepopulation frequency distribution was negatively skewed andcharacterised by slow-growing, mainly adult individuals. Pseudo-copulationgroupings of 3 to 11 male specimens in star-shaped arrangementsappeared on the sediment surface in May and June as early summerbottom water temperatures increased above 10.0°C to 11.5°C.At its highpoint, c. 6 groups/m2 were observed, with a meanof 5.9 males/grouping. Surface trails left by fertile malesindicated that they probably responded to a pheromone releasedby a passive fertile female lying within a radius of at least0.5 m. Smaller males were proportionately more active than largermales in sperm transfer. It was estimated that c. 15% of malesand 3% of females were synchronously fertile at the maximumobserved level of pseudocopulation activity. Laboratory observationsidentified the production of a complex doublewalled cylindricalspermatophore containing paired and unpaired euspermatozoa, and multiflagellate paraspermatozoa. Paired euspermatozoa weremost dominant and were arranged spirally at a 45° angleto the spermatophore axis. These were also frequently foundin morulae. An additional, spirallybound membranous tube exhibitingbulbous diverticula within the spermatophore contained paraspermatozoaonly. The observations confirm that sperm transfer is not apassive process as previously thought, and that the specieshas a far greater capacity for movement than was believed. Gregariousness,a noted feature among populations of turritellid species appearsto be a critically essential life strategy among these aphallic,internally-fertilising gastropods. In sturgeons, the induction of gynogenesis and sex reversal could be important for potential production of neomale sturgeon and all‐female progeny for caviar production. The aim of this study was sex reversal of ship sturgeon (Acipenser nudiventris Lovetsky, 1828) gynogen into male sex. Five‐month‐old gynogens were sex reversed into male by including 17α‐methyl testosterone in their food for 7 months. Three treatments were considered as follows: (a) without treated (gynogen control), (b) 10 mg MT/kg diet, and (c) 50 mg MT/kg diet. All treatments (60 individuals) were sampled both the 30 and 36 months old and their sex was determined using classical histology method of gonad. The sex ratio of the progenies in the gynogen control were 73.3% female and 26.7% male. In treatment of 10 mg MT/kg feed, 18 specimens were studied that half of them (50%) showed pseudo‐testicular structure in the female gonad. That is 50% of the specimens were intersex, 27.7% were male and 22.3% were female. All of the fish fed by 50 mg MT/kg feed had been sex reversed to male. Sexual maturation of these fish had been recognized in stage III at 36 months old. In conclusion, 50 mg MT/kg feed found as effective dose for successful sex reversal in gynogenetic ship sturgeon.  相似文献

Lepsiella vinosa\ (Lamarck), a common intertidal predatory gastropod, was studied in two zones on an exposed rocky shore in Victoria(Australia). Those from the Mussel Zone in the mid-shore primarilyate one species of mussel and had a faster rate of energy consumptionthan those from the Littorinid Zone in the high-shore, whichmainly ate one species of littorinid gastropod. Shell length, growth rate and size-specific body weight of L. vinosa wereall significantly greater in the Mussel Zone. Egg capsules ofL. vinosa from the Mussel Zone contained significantly moreeggs and more potential hatchlings per capsule than those fromthe Littorinid Zone although there were no significant differencesin the sizes of eggs or hatchlings between zones. These differencesbetween the two zones were correlated to the greater consumptionof energy by L. vinosa in the Mussel Zone and were discussedin relation to the absence of dispersive larvae in this species 1Present address: Department of Zoology, Monash University,Clayton, Victoria, 3168, Australia 2Present address: School of Biological Sciences, Carslaw Building,F07, University of Sydney, N.S.W., 2006, Australia. The amounts of phosphate, zinc, copper and calcium in gonadmaterial from Nucella lapillus (L.) was higher in males comparedwith females. Water insoluble extracts from the digestive glandwere found to contain granules high in concentrations of phosphate, magnesium, zinc, copper and calcium when compared with watersoluble extracts and both types of extract from gonad tissueof male and female dog whelks. Male N. lapillus contained thehighest amounts of zinc and copper in isolated digestive glandgranules. Intracellular granules containing metal were locatedhistochemically in cells of the digestive gland and visceralhaemocoelic spaces (Received 5 December 1978;  相似文献

The age, growth, reproduction and resource development status of Ptychidio jordani, as a critically endangered freshwater fish in the Hongshui River, China, was studied in this work. A total of 525 specimens were collected monthly using the cages and gillnets from October 2021 to September 2022 in the Hongshui River. The scale was used for age determination, and the maximum age for both female and male was estimated to be 5 years and 3 years, respectively. Female and male P. jordani showed different growth patterns, which were expressed as Lt = 261.3 (1-e−0.4885(t−0.1476)) and Lt = 251.2 (1-e−0.4758(t+0.9643)), respectively. The overall sex ratio was 1:0.47 (female:male). Female attained sex maturity at 2.34 years (192 mm body length). Month variation of the gonad somatic index indicated that the spawning period occurred from April to October. The absolute fecundity was estimated at 9046 ± 3434 eggs per individual, and the relative fecundity was 38.08 ± 15.77 eggs per gram. The exploitation rate of female and male was 0.233 and 0.495, which indicated that P. jordani was not overfishing. This study provided data on the key life-history traits of P. jordani, which has not been known previously and is essential for conservation strategy and policy development.  相似文献

Pseudohermaphroditism or imposex is an abnormality of the gastropodreproductive system caused by the effects of an environmentalpollutant, tributyltin, in which parts of the male reproductivetract develop in females. In this study, the post-larval developmentof the reproductive system in pseudohermaphroditic male andfemale Nassarius vibex was investigated relative to normal developmentto determine how and when the abnormalities associated withpseudohermaphroditism develop. Two populations of N. vibex were compared:one exhibiting normal development, and one in which the animalswere effected by pseudohermaphroditism. In the affected N. vibexpopulation, a penis and anterior spermiduct developed very earlyin ontogeny in both males and females. Normal reproductive systemdevelopment was affected in some females, evidenced by fusion ofthe induced spermiduct and anterior oviduct, or by abnormaloviduct development. Several males displayed precocious maturationof the gonad in addition to early development of the anteriorspermiduct and penis. (Received 25 April 2000; accepted 1 July 2000)  相似文献

The response of the late second-instar male nymphs of the mealybug species (Hemiptera, Pseudococcidae), Planococcus citri (Risso), Planococcus ficus (Signoret), Pseudococcus cryptus Hempel Nipaecoccus viridis (Newstead), to their conspecific and heterospecific female pheromone was studied. Males that exhibited the typical appearance of late-second-instar nymphs were tested. The male behavior was monitored soon after their exposure to the tested female sex pheromone in glass Petri dish arenas. Male nymph behavior toward the pheromone source was characterized based on their aggregation on the disks in the arena. Males of all four tested mealybug species were attracted to their conspecific female pheromone. By contrast, almost no interceptions of male nymphs with disks impregnated with a heterospecific female pheromone were observed. The mode of attraction of each of male nymphs of P. ficus, among most of the tested individuals (>80%), to the conspecific female sex pheromone, (S)-lavandulyl senecioate and or (S)-lavandulyl isovalerate, was the same as the mode of attraction latter on as adult. We suggest that by being attracted to the conspecific pheromone these males may direct themselves to a suitable pupation site near conspecific non-sibling mature females, thus preventing inbreeding. The repellency of heterospecific sex pheromone to males that are looking for a pupation site suggests that the latter try to avoid close contact with heterospecific females.  相似文献

Nemerteans possess serially arranged gonads that lie between the midgut pouches. In both sexes the gonads are lined with an epithelium. During maturity, they gain contact to the exterior by a ciliated duct, which is generally assumed to be a derivative of the gonad. Gonad lining and sperm ultrastructure are little known in heteronemerteans, a group of nemerteans belonging to the Anopla, one of the two large nemertean subgroups. Reproduction biology in heteronemertean Lineus viridis allows predicting a modified sperm type, so-called introsperm for this taxon. Nothing is known on the fate of the testes at the end of the reproductive period of this perennial species. In order to test the predictions and to broaden the data base, males of L. viridis were collected at different times of the year. Histological and ultrastructural data show that the gonad wall is lined with different aciliated endothelial cells and germ cells, while the gonoduct is formed by densely ciliated cells. The testes are completely filled with sperm cells during maturity; there is no hint at ongoing spermiogenesis at this time. The sperm consists of head, midpiece and tail. Externally, head and midpiece cannot be discriminated. The acrosome is cup-shaped and lies anterior to the nucleus which contains 6–8 lateral ridges. Three long mitochondria mark the midpiece. They line the posterior section of the nucleus and extend up to the level of the ciliary basal structures. The sperm morphology corroborates the predictions derived from the mode of reproduction. At the end of the reproductive period the male gonads change cellular composition, while the gonoduct degenerates. Provided that both sexes show the same growth rate, male offspring acquire sexual maturity earlier than female offspring, since L. viridis males are always smaller than the females. In contrast to the males, females keep their gonads and gonoducts during most time of the year. Since large males were never found within the studied population, these data indicate that L. viridis might be a consecutive hermaphrodite.  相似文献

Fitness correlates of male coloration in a Lake Victoria cichlid fish   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Sexual selection by female choice has contributed to the rapidevolution of phenotypic diversity in the cichlid fish speciesflocks of East Africa. Yet, very little is known about the ecologicalmechanisms that drive the evolution of female mating preferences. We studied fitness correlates of male nuptial coloration ina member of a diverse Lake Victoria cichlid lineage, Pundamilianyererei. In this species, male red coloration is subject tointraspecific sexual selection by female mate choice. Male nuptialcoloration plays a critical role also in reproductive isolationbetween this species and the closely related sympatric speciesP. pundamilia. Here, we show that P. nyererei male colorationis carotenoid based, illustrating the potential for honest signalingof individual quality. In a wild population, we found that variationin male coloration was not associated with variation in a setof strongly intercorrelated indicators of male dominance: malesize, territory size, and territory location. Instead, the 2male characters that predominantly determine female choice, territory size and red coloration, may be independent predictorsof male quality: males with bright red coloration and largeterritories had lower parasite infestation rates. As a result, female preferences tended to select against heavily parasitizedmales. Consistent with parasite-mediated sexual selection, maleshad higher and more variable parasite loads than females.  相似文献

The small free-living nematode Caenorhabditis elegans is usually found as a hermaphrodite, but occasionally true males appear in the population. This study provides an account of gonadogenesis in the normal male and in a mutant that is a temperature-sensitive sex transformer.Male and hermaphrodite gonads develop from morphologically identical primordia. The small primordial gonad lies on the ventral side of the worm in the coelomic cavity. The gonadial primordium contains four nuclei at parturition. As this primordium develops in a hermaphrodite, it produces a double-armed, mirror symmetrical gonad that produces first sperm and then eggs. In the male, however, this primordium develops into an asymmetrical structure composed of a ventrally located testis, a loop region, a seminal vesicle, and a vas deferens. The male gonad presents a linear sequence of nuclei in successive stages of spermatogenesis beginning with a mitotic region in the testis, followed by clearly distinguishable stages of meiosis throughout the loop region to the seminal vesicle.A temperature-sensitive sex transformer mutant, tsB202, has been isolated. tsB202 carries an autosomal recessive mutation in linkage group II that at restrictive temperature transforms an XX hermaphrodite into a phenotypic male, complete with a normal male gonad and vestigial external genitalia. These transformed males are classified as pseudomales because they do not exhibit mating behavior. Temperature shift experiments have determined the specific temporal sequences of gonadogenesis, oogenesis, and spermatogenesis. Proper manipulation of the temperature regimen causes the production of intersexes. In one intersex, a male gonad complete with sperm, seminal vesicle, and vas deferens also contains oocytes. In another intersex produced by the complementary temperature shift, a hermaphrodite-shaped gonad develops that produces only sperm and no oocytes.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of a study of the effects oftemperature on the growth, reproduction and longevity of thecladoceran Moina salina, a species of potential use as livefood in marine aquaculture. The growth rate of M.salina increasedwith increasing temperature. Some parameters of development, such as length at death and the number of adult instars, werealso positively related to temperature. Other parameters (durationof juvenile and adult instars) decreased with increasing temperature, while the number of juvenile instars was unaffected. An increasein temperature resulted in a reduction in age at maturity anda decrease in the number of days between broods. The numberof young per female, the number of broods per female, the numberof youngper day of reproductive life, and the number of youngper brood, increased up to a temperature of 25°C. At 15and 20°C. substantial degeneration of eggs and/or embryosoccurred. Likewise, temperature affected the type of reproductioncarried out by sexual females. Temperature and longevity wereinversely correlated. It was concluded that temperature actsas a very important factor regulating the life cycle of M.salina.Temperature >30°C may correspond to sublethal levels, while a temperature of 15°C is considered to impose stress. The range 20–25°C is optimal for the development andreproduction of this species.
