Electromyographic (EMG) activities of three tail muscles, the extensor caudae lateralis (ECL), abductor caudae externus (ACE), and flexor caudae longus (FCL), were recorded bilaterally in seven adult dogs during walking, trotting, and galloping on a treadmill. Each dog's movements were recorded with a 16 mm high-speed camera system, and angular movements of the tail were analyzed. During walking and trotting, reciprocal EMG bursts were observed between right and left tail muscles and corresponded with lateral movements of the tail. The tonic discharges that were observed in ECL and FCL seemed to maintain the position of the tail. During galloping, synchronized EMG activity of all tail muscles produced reactive torques to counter those generated by cyclic limb movements and kept the tail in a stable position. These results suggest that tail movements are important in maintaining body balance during locomotion in the dog. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Algorithms to predict heelstrike and toeoff times during normal walking using only kinematic data are presented. The accuracy of these methods was compared with the results obtained using synchronized force platform recordings of two subjects walking at a variety of speeds for a total of 12 trials. Using a 60Hz data collection system, the absolute value errors (AVE) in predicting heelstrike averaged 4.7ms, while the AVE in predicting toeoff times averaged 5.6ms. True average errors (negative for an early prediction) were +1.2ms for both heelstrike and toeoff, indicating that no systematic errors occurred. It was concluded that the proposed algorithms provide an easy and reliable method of determining event times during walking when kinematic data are collected, with a considerable improvement in resolution over visual inspection of video records, and could be utilized in conjunction with any 2-D or 3-D kinematic data collection system.  相似文献

Researchers conduct gait analyses utilizing both overground and treadmill modes of running. Previous studies comparing these modes analyzed discrete variables. Recently, techniques involving quantitative pattern analysis have assessed kinematic curve similarity in gait. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to compare hip, knee and rearfoot 3-D kinematics between overground and treadmill running using quantitative kinematic curve analysis. Twenty runners ran at 3.35 m/s ± 5% during treadmill and overground conditions while right lower extremity kinematics were recorded. Kinematics of the hip, knee and rearfoot at footstrike and peak were compared using intraclass correlation coefficients. Kinematic curves during stance phase were compared using the trend symmetry method within each subject. The overall average trend symmetry was high, 0.94 (1.0 is perfect symmetry) between running modes. The transverse plane and knee frontal plane exhibited lower similarity (0.86-0.90). Other than a 4.5 degree reduction in rearfoot dorsiflexion at footstrike during treadmill running, all differences were ≤1.5 degrees. 17/18 discrete variables exhibited modest correlations (>0.6) and 8/18 exhibited strong correlations (>0.8). In conclusion, overground and treadmill running kinematic curves were generally similar when averaged across subjects. Although some subjects exhibited differences in transverse plane curves, overall, treadmill running was representative of overground running for most subjects.  相似文献

The purpose of this investigation was to associate the force produced by the cat medial gastrocnemius (MG) during unrestrained treadmill locomotion with the corresponding myoelectric signals (MES's). An intervention analysis based on the autoregressive-integrated moving average (ARIMA) process was performed on records obtained at treadmill speeds of 0.67 ms-1 and 2.24 ms-1. Results indicate that the pattern of MG myoelectric activity during a single step cycle may be divided into two parts. The primary burst (E1 burst) of activity occurs before foot contact and represents an energy build up which is related to a major part of the MG force monitored at the tendon. During stance, a second burst of activity is depicted by an almost critically damped second order system, and is responsible for the residual tension observed. Thus in vivo forces can be linked to MES's provided that phase differences between electrical and mechanical responses are taken into account.  相似文献

Intramuscular electromyography (EMG) was used to determine and compare the recruitment patterns of the rat soleus (Sol), tibialis anterior (TA), and a deep and a superficial portion of the medial gastrocnemius (MG) during treadmill locomotion at various speeds and inclines and during swimming. Raw EMG signals for 10-20 step or stroke cycles were rectified, averaged, and processed to determine cycle period (EMG onset of one cycle to EMG onset of the next cycle), EMG burst duration, and integrated area of the rectified burst (IEMG). Mean EMG per burst was calculated as IEMG/burst duration. IEMG/min was calculated as IEMG times the number of bursts (cycles) per minute. Cycle period and burst duration of the extensors decreased hyperbolically, while the TA burst duration was unchanged, with increased treadmill speed. With increased treadmill speed, IEMG was decreased in the Sol and unchanged in the MG and TA, whereas IEMG/min decreased in the Sol and increased in the MG and TA. An elevation in treadmill incline resulted in an increase in the activation levels of the MG but not in the Sol or TA. These data indicate that the additional power required at increased speeds and/or inclines of treadmill locomotion is derived from the recruitment of the fast extensors, e.g., the MG. The mean cycle period during swimming was similar to that observed during the fastest treadmill locomotion. EMG burst durations and amplitudes, however, were higher in the TA, relatively similar in the MG, and lower in the Sol during swimming than treadmill locomotion.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Effects of hindlimb unloading on interlimb coordination were examined in adult rats walking on a treadmill at moderate speed. In the first group of animals, the electromyographic activity (EMG) of soleus muscle of both hindlimbs was recorded after 7 and 14 days of unloading. In the second group, the EMG was recorded daily until the 14th day of unloading. The general organization of locomotion was preserved in the two groups whatever the duration of the unloading. The step cycles of the two hindlimbs were always strictly alternating. However, the locomotor pattern was very irregular. A lateral instability was observed. It was accompanied by an abduction of the hindlimbs, and frequent hyperextensions of the ankle when walking. The EMG analysis showed an increase in step cycle duration and in coactivation duration of the soleus muscles (i.e. in the double stance duration). In the rats recorded daily, mean EMG was dramatically reduced the 1st day of unloading, suggesting a decrease in the neural drive. Taken together, these data indicate that 14 days of hindlimb unloading can alter the neuromuscular pattern during locomotion. Daily activities, such as walking, may require dynamic modulation of vestibular input onto motoneurons. This dynamic modulation is difficult to identify in humans due to limitations in the delivery and analysis of current vestibular probes, such as galvanic vestibular stimulation. Stochastic vestibular stimulation, however, provides an alternative method to extract human vestibular reflexes. Here, we used time-dependent coherence and time-dependent cross-correlation, coupled with stochastic vestibular stimulation, to investigate the phase dependency of human vestibular reflexes during locomotion. We found that phase-dependent activity from the medial gastrocnemius muscles is correlated with the vestibular signals over the 2- to 20-Hz bandwidth during the stance phase of locomotion. Vestibular-gastrocnemius coherence and time-dependent cross-correlations reached maximums at 21 ± 4 and 23 ± 8% of the step cycle following heel contact and before the period of maximal electromyographic activity (38 ± 5%). These results demonstrate 1) the effectiveness of these techniques in extracting the phase-dependent modulation of vestibulomuscular coupling during a cyclic task; 2) that vestibulomuscular coupling is phasically modulated during locomotion; and 3) that the period of strongest vestibulomuscular coupling does not correspond to the period of maximal electromyographic activity in the gastrocnemius. Therefore, we have shown that stochastic vestibular stimulation, coupled with time-frequency decomposition, provides an effective tool to assess the contribution of vestibular ex-afference to the muscular control during locomotion.  相似文献

This paper formulates a class of models for the joint behaviour of a sequence of longitudinal measurements and an associated sequence of event times, including single-event survival data. This class includes and extends a number of specific models which have been proposed recently, and, in the absence of association, reduces to separate models for the measurements and events based, respectively, on a normal linear model with correlated errors and a semi-parametric proportional hazards or intensity model with frailty. Special cases of the model class are discussed in detail and an estimation procedure which allows the two components to be linked through a latent stochastic process is described. Methods are illustrated using results from a clinical trial into the treatment of schizophrenia.  相似文献

The purpose of this paper was to describe a technique that enables three-dimensional (3D) gait kinematics to be obtained using an electromagnetic tracking system, and to report the intra-trial, intra-day/inter-tester and inter-day/intra-tester repeatability of kinematic gait data obtained using this technique. Ten able-bodied adults underwent four gait assessments; the same two testers tested each subject independently on two different days. Gait assessments were conducted on a custom-built long-bed treadmill with no metal components between the rollers. Each gait assessment involved familiarisation to treadmill walking, subject anatomical and functional calibration, and a period of steady-state treadmill walking at a self-selected speed. Following data collection, 3D joint kinematics were calculated using the joint coordinate system approach. 3D joint angle waveforms for 10 left and right strides were extracted and temporally normalised for each trial. Intra-trial, intra-day/inter-tester and inter-day/intra-tester repeatability of the temporally normalised kinematic waveforms were quantified using the coefficient of multiple determination (CMD). CMDs for joint kinematics averaged 0.942 intra-trial, 0.849 intra-day/inter-tester and 0.773 inter-day/intra-tester. In general, sagittal plane kinematics were more repeatable than frontal or transverse plane kinematics, and kinematics at the hip were more repeatable than at the knee or ankle. The level of repeatability of kinematic gait data obtained during treadmill walking using this protocol was equal or superior to that reported previously for overground walking using image-based protocols.  相似文献

Gait research and clinical gait training may benefit from movement-dependent event control, that is, technical applications in which events such as obstacle appearance or visual/acoustic cueing are (co)determined online on the basis of current gait properties. A prerequisite for successful gait-dependent event control is accurate online detection of gait events such as foot contact (FC) and foot off (FO). The objective of the present study was to assess the feasibility of online FC and FO detection using a single large force platform embedded in a treadmill. Center-of-pressure, total force output and kinematic data were recorded simultaneously in 12 healthy participants. Online FC and FO estimates and spatial and temporal gait parameters estimated from the force platform data-i.e., center-of-pressure profiles-were compared to offline kinematic counterparts, which served as the gold standard. Good correspondence was achieved between online FC detections using center-of-pressure profiles and those derived offline from kinematic data, whereas FO was detected 31ms too late. A good relative and absolute agreement was achieved for both spatial and temporal gait parameters, which was improved further by applying more fine-grained FO estimation procedures using characteristic local minima in the total force output time series. These positive results suggest that the proposed system for gait-dependent event control may be successfully implemented in gait research as well as gait interventions in clinical practice.  相似文献

Previous studies examining the delay to the onset of vasodilation have primarily focused on the onset of exercise, a setting complicated by the fact that the muscle pump and the vasodilator systems are both activated, making it difficult to attribute changes in blood flow to one or both. The goal here was to determine the delay to the onset of vasodilation after changes in work rate imposed by changes in treadmill grade (work intensity) during locomotion at a steady speed. The rationale was that constant speed would help ensure constant muscle pump activity (contraction frequency) such that vasodilator responses could be examined in isolation. Seven Sprague-Dawley rats underwent three trials each in which treadmill incline was suddenly ( approximately 1 s) elevated from -10 degrees to +10 degrees. The delay to the onset of vasodilation averaged 5.0 +/- 1.8 s, and this delay was not altered by inhibition of nitric oxide synthase. Similar or longer delays were seen during sinusoidal exercise. Thus there is a significant delay before the onset of vasodilation after an increase in work intensity (muscle force) during locomotory exercise at constant speed.  相似文献

To study the mechanical output of skeletal muscle, four adult cats were trained to run on a treadmill and then implanted under sterile conditions and anesthesia with a force transducer on the soleus tendon and EMG electrodes in the muscle belly. After a two-week recovery period, five consecutive step cycles were filmed at treadmill speeds of 0.8, 1.3 and 2.2 m s-1. Locomotion data in vivo included individual muscle force, length and velocity changes and EMG during each step cycle. Data for an average step cycle at each speed were compared to the force-velocity properties obtained on the same muscle under maximal nerve stimulation and isotonic loading conditions in situ. Results indicate that the force and power generated at a given velocity of shortening during late stance in vivo were greater at the higher speeds of locomotion than the force and power generated at the same shortening velocity in situ. Strain energy stored in the muscle-tendon unit during the yield phase in early stance is felt to be a major contributor to the muscle's enhanced mechanical output during muscle shortening in late stance.  相似文献

In multivariate survival analysis, investigators are often interested in testing for heterogeneity among clusters, both overall and within specific classes. We represent different hypotheses about the heterogeneity structure using a sequence of gamma frailty models, ranging from a null model with no random effects to a full model having random effects for each class. Following a Bayesian approach, we define prior distributions for the frailty variances consisting of mixtures of point masses at zero and inverse-gamma densities. Since frailties with zero variance effectively drop out of the model, this prior allocates probability to each model in the sequence, including the overall null hypothesis of homogeneity. Using a counting process formulation, the conditional posterior distributions of the frailties and proportional hazards regression coefficients have simple forms. Posterior computation proceeds via a data augmentation Gibbs sampling algorithm, a single run of which can be used to obtain model-averaged estimates of the population parameters and posterior model probabilities for testing hypotheses about the heterogeneity structure. Many biomedical studies collect data on times of occurrence for a health event that can occur repeatedly, such as infection, hospitalization, recurrence of disease, or tumor onset. To analyze such data, it is necessary to account for within-subject dependency in the multiple event times. Motivated by data from studies of palpable tumors, this article proposes a dynamic frailty model and Bayesian semiparametric approach to inference. The widely used shared frailty proportional hazards model is generalized to allow subject-specific frailties to change dynamically with age while also accommodating nonproportional hazards. Parametric assumptions on the frailty distribution are avoided by using Dirichlet process priors for a shared frailty and for multiplicative innovations on this frailty. By centering the semiparametric model on a conditionally conjugate dynamic gamma model, we facilitate posterior computation and lack-of-fit assessments of the parametric model. Our proposed method is demonstrated using data from a cancer chemoprevention study.  相似文献
