Soft tissue artefact (STA), i.e. the motion of the skin, fat and muscles gliding on the underlying bone, may lead to a marker position error reaching up to 8.7 cm for the particular case of the scapula. Multibody kinematics optimisation (MKO) is one of the most efficient approaches used to reduce STA. It consists in minimising the distance between the positions of experimental markers on a subject skin and the simulated positions of the same markers embedded on a kinematic model. However, the efficiency of MKO directly relies on the chosen kinematic model. This paper proposes an overview of the different upper limb models available in the literature and a discussion about their applicability to MKO.The advantages of each joint model with respect to its biofidelity to functional anatomy are detailed both for the shoulder and the forearm areas. Models capabilities of personalisation and of adaptation to pathological cases are also discussed. Concerning model efficiency in terms of STA reduction in MKO algorithms, a lack of quantitative assessment in the literature is noted. In priority, future studies should concern the evaluation and quantification of STA reduction depending on upper limb joint constraints.  相似文献

A survey of serial, histological sections of cephalopod embryos at early and advanced morphogenetic stages provided evidence that always the cutting edge of the lower jaw is first connected, by a thin organic membrane, to the cutting edge of the upper jaw. The lower jaw rudiment does not exhibit any separation of the right from the left half. The mechanisms that control the limbs position during rhythmic voluntary oscillations were investigated in ten subjects, who were asked to synchronise the lower peak of their hand or foot rhythmic oscillations to a metronome beat. The efficacy of the “position control” was estimated by measuring the degree of synchronisation between the metronome signal and the requested limb position and how it was affected by changing both the oscillation frequency (between 0.4 and 3.0 Hz) and the limbs inertial properties. With the limbs unloaded, the lower peak of both the hand and foot oscillations lagged the metronome beat of a slight amount that remained constant over the whole frequency range (mean phase delay −13.2° for the hand and −4.7° for the foot). The constancy was obtained by phase-advancing, at each frequency increment, the electromyogram (EMG) activation with respect of the clock beat of the amount necessary to compensate for the simultaneous increase of the lag between the EMG and the movement, produced by the limb mechanical impedance. After loading of either limb, the increase of the oscillation frequency induced larger EMG-movement delays and the anticipatory compensation became insufficient, so that the movement progressively phase-lagged the clock beat. The above results have been accurately simulated by a neural network connected to a pendulum model that shared the same mechanical properties of the moving limb. The network compares a central command (the intended position) to the actual position of the effector and acts as a closed-loop proportional, integrative and derivative controller. It is proposed that the synchronisation of rhythmic oscillations of either the hand or the foot is sustained by a feed-back control that conforms the position of each limb to that encoded in the central voluntary command.  相似文献

Primary objective: The hip joint suffers from a high prevalence of degenerative conditions. Athough patient's well-being could be improved through early and more effective interventions, without a greater understanding of the mechanics of the hip, these developments cannot be attained. Thus, this review article summarises the current literature on this subject in order to provide a platform for future developments. To illustrate the influence computational simulations have had on the knowledge advancement in hip mechanics, we explored two methodological approaches: finite element (FE) analysis and multibody dynamics (MBD). Main outcomes and results: Notwithstanding the unique capabilities of FE and MBD, the former generally offers the micromechanics of the articulating surfaces whereas the latter the macromechanics of the skeleton, these two methodologies also provide the bulk of the literature regarding computational modelling of the musculoskeletal system. Although FE has provided significant knowledge on contact pressures and the effects of musculoskeletal geometries, in particular cartilage and bone shapes, MBD has afforded a wealth of understanding on the influence of gait patterns and muscle attachment locations on force magnitudes. Conclusions: These two computational techniques have, and will continue to, provide significant contributions towards the development of interventions. It is hoped that this article will help focus ongoing technological developments by highlighting areas of success, but also areas of under development.  相似文献

Features of the antennae, maxillary palps, and mouthparts of the females of seven species of Culicoides spp. biting midges collected from a montane rainforest site in Trinidad, West Indies, were studied by light and scanning electron microscopy. Comparisons were made with two British species, Culicoides impunctatus and Culicoides nubeculosus. Species-specific differences were demonstrated in the camber and pitch of mandibular teeth, the size and shape of the subapical labral sensilla, the size and depth of the palpal sensory pit, and the number and shape of heads of the palpal sensilla. Counts of sensilla coeloconica and palpal sensilla were suggested as being contributory features for the prediction of host preference, indicating that Culicoides darlingtonae, Culicoides glabellus, Culicoides insinuatus, Culicoides paraensis, and Culicoides pseudodiabolicus were probably mammalophilic species. The host preferences of Culicoides heliconiae and Culicoides flavivenula could not be determined accurately.  相似文献

Twenty subjects, aged 17 to 25, were given from 5 to 10 sessions of training in controlling alpha. They were divided into three groups, respectively reinforced for increasing alpha from the central area, reinforced for decreasing alpha from the central area, and given noncontingent reinforcement. Compared with the initial baseline, the alpha of the noncontingent subjects did not change, while those reinforced for increases were reliably higher and those reinforced for decreases reliably lower than the noncontingent group. A slight trend toward improvement during successive sessions was not reliable. Since the experiment was conducted in the Soviet Union, the subjects had no expectations of an “alpha experience.” Although tests showed a slight elevation in mood at the end of the sessions, there were no differences among the groups. There was an increase in reports of fatigue after the training sessions. There were no reports of using visual or somatomotor maneuvers as a means of controlling alpha. Furthermore, alpha rhythm control was not found to be consistently correlated with changes in heart rate, respiration, or mood, as determined by cross-correlation analysis.  相似文献

The effects on anther development of a fusion of the Arabidopsis anther-specific apg gene promoter to a ribonuclease (barnase) in transgenic tobacco plants were examined. Contrary to expectations, viable pollen grains were produced by these plants despite the demonstration that ribonuclease expression in the microspores and tapetum caused targeted cell ablation. Transformed plants were reduced in male fertility due to ablation of a proportion of pollen dependent on apg-barnase locus number. Plants were otherwise phenotypically normal and fully female fertile, confirming the anther-specific nature of the apg promoter. In microspores inheriting an apg-barnase locus following meiosis, loss of cell viability, as judged by fluorescein diacetate staining, occurred during mid to late microspore development. Microspores not inheriting a transgene went on to mature into viable pollen grains. Premature degeneration of the tapetum was also observed as a result of apg-barnase expression, but this did not appear to disrupt the subsequent microspore and pollen developmental programmes. This was substantiated by observations of microspore development in plants in which the tapetum was rescued from ablation by crossing in a second transgene encoding a tapetum-specific inhibitor of the ribonuclease. It was determined that tapetum cell disruption occurs at the early to mid uninucleate microspore stage in apg-barnase transformants. The data presented show that after this point in microspore development the tapetum is no longer essential for the production of viable pollen in tobacco.  相似文献

Summary Feedback mechanisms exist in all the periferal sense organs including the eye, which acts as a highly efficient position control servo system. Histological studies so far have not revealed the precise circuitry of the eye movement control system but some information about it can be obtained by a study of the sources of feedback. Existing theories have considered three types of feedback originating in the oculomotor tract, in the proprioceptive fibres of the extrinsic eye muscles and from retinal image displacement. In the present experiments an optical arrangement has been used to vary or eliminate the amount of information available from retinal image motion, and the response of the eye to simple harmonic displacement of a target has been recorded. The response curves of gain (eyeball movement divided by target motion) against frequency indicate that the system is lion linear when the image falls in the retinal region which is insensitive to position. Outside this area, retinal image position is used as negative feedback but the information from the oculomotor tract must be regenerative. There is also evidence for feedback proportional to the first derivative of eyeball position and this function is ascribed to the proprioceptive signals; this form of feedback appears to saturate for large amplitude movements, thus avoiding heavy damping of the flick movements.A schematic eye movement control system having the same characteristics as the eye is proposed. The transfer function of this system indicates that it should be unstable if the sign of the retinal image feedback loop is reversed. Experiments with this form of feedback show that steady fixation is impossible and the eye performs a pendular nystagmus.  相似文献

The Morris water maze is an experimental procedure in which animals learn to escape swimming in a pool using environmental cues. Despite its success in neuroscience and psychology for studying spatial learning and memory, the exact mnemonic and navigational demands of the task are not well understood. Here, we provide a mathematical model of rat swimming dynamics on a behavioural level. The model consists of a random walk, a heading change and a feedback control component in which learning is reflected in parameter changes of the feedback mechanism. The simplicity of the model renders it accessible and useful for analysis of experiments in which swimming paths are recorded. Here, we used the model to analyse an experiment in which rats were trained to find the platform with either three or one extramaze cue. Results indicate that the 3-cues group employs stronger feedback relying only on the actual visual input, whereas the 1-cue group employs weaker feedback relying to some extent on memory. Because the model parameters are linked to neurological processes, identifying different parameter values suggests the activation of different neuronal pathways.  相似文献

Ten different lectins conjugated to fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) were used to study the distribution of surface carbohydrates on mouse spermatozoa, and to monitor the possible changes of their distribution during capacitation in vitro and sperm-egg interaction. Most of the lectins gave a restricted pattern of binding to fixed or unfixed epididymal spermatozoa. Binding was highly specific because no staining occurred in the presence of appropriate monosaccharides. Binding of UEA I, DBA and Con A was unaffected by the type of fixative used, but it was influenced by mild centrifugation. While unwashed spermatozoa showed binding mainly over the acrosomal cap and equatorial or postacrosomal regions, spermatozoa washed by mild centrifugation showed a change in the staining of the equatorial segment. Binding of 5 different lectins to spermatozoa did not change during capacitation in vitro. In contrast, capacitated spermatozoa bound to the zona pellucida exhibited a UEA I binding pattern which was strikingly different from that of the capacitated but unbound spermatozoa. We conclude that glycocomponents of specific regions of mouse spermatozoa do not change dramatically during capacitation, but do alter significantly during binding to the zona pellucida.  相似文献

An investigation of dominance in phytoplankton using the PROTECH model   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
1. Using a model (PROTECH-C) that simulates the simultaneous daily growth of eight phytoplankton species, the following hypotheses were tested: (i) for each given set of simulated conditions, the species with the most appropriate trait, as predicted by a functional group classification, should dominate the community; (ii) with removal of this dominant species, the next best-adapted species should dominate and should be from the same, or a close, functional group where available; (iii) a reduction in the inoculum size of the initially dominant species will not prevent its eventual dominance of the community.
2. For clearer insight into the mechanisms underlying these community processes, a functional group classification based upon species morphology has been used to produce a matrix analogous to Grime's CSR (C, competitor; S, stress tolerator; R, ruderal) paradigm. The effects upon this phytoplankton community of temperature, grazing, limiting light and nutrients over a simulated year were recorded.
3. The results supported all three hypotheses. It was found that, for a given selective constraint, functional traits provided excellent predictors of the dominant types. Also, under conditions of resource competition, the number of functional groups represented decreased. Competition was greatest within functional groups where niche overlap was high, but one species was always clearly the strongest competitor, i.e. its superiority over its nearest functional competitor was regularly expressed even when the difference in inoculum size was great (1000-fold). These conclusions emphasized the power that trait selection can have in the shaping of communities.  相似文献

Introduction

The role of inhibitory control in addictive behaviors is highlighted in several models of addictive behaviors. Although reduced inhibitory control has been observed in addictive behaviors, it is inconclusive whether this is evident in smokers. Furthermore, it has been proposed that drug abuse individuals with poor response inhibition may experience greater difficulties not consuming substances in the presence of drug cues. The major aim of the current study was to provide electrophysiological evidence for reduced inhibitory control in smokers and to investigate whether this is more pronounced during smoking cue exposure.

Methods

Participants (19 smokers and 20 non-smoking controls) performed a smoking Go/NoGo task. Behavioral accuracy and amplitudes of the N2 and P3 event-related potential (ERP), both reflecting aspects of response inhibition, were the main variables of interest.

Results

Reduced NoGo N2 amplitudes in smokers relative to controls were accompanied by decreased task performance, whereas no differences between groups were found in P3 amplitudes. This was found to represent a general lack of inhibition in smokers, and not dependent on the presence of smoking cues.

Conclusions

The current results suggest that smokers have difficulties with response inhibition, which is an important finding that eventually can be implemented in smoking cessation programs. More research is needed to clarify the exact role of cue exposure on response inhibition.  相似文献

AIMS: To evaluate the environmental spread of Salmonella strains in the reptile department of Antwerp Zoo and to compare different isolation methods for Salmonella. METHODS AND RESULTS: One hundred environmental samples were collected in the service sections and public spaces of the reptile department. After pre-enrichment in buffered peptone water (BPW), selective enrichment was performed in Rappaport Vassiliadis Single Component Enrichment Broth (RVS), Selenite Cystine Broth (SEL) and Mueller Kauffman Tetrathionate Broth (MKTTn). Subculturing on Modified Semisolid Rappaport-Vassiliadis (MSRV) Medium, and the combined use of immunomagnetic separation (IMS) and RVS was evaluated. The isolation media used were Hektoen Enteric Agar (HE), Phenol Red Brilliant Green Agar (BG) and Xylose Lysine Decarboxylase Agar (XLD). Salmonella strains were found in 47 samples (47.0%). Most isolations were made on HE after combined IMS/RVS enrichment. Sixty-six Salmonella strains were serotyped, 29 belonged to Salmonella enterica ssp. enterica (I), 3 to ssp. salamae (II), 29 to ssp. arizonae or diarizonae (IIIa/b), 4 to ssp. houtenae (IV) and 1 strain showed autoagglutination. In addition, a 10-year survey (1995-2004) of Salmonella serovars isolated from reptiles at Antwerp Zoo is presented. CONCLUSIONS: A high prevalence of Salmonella strains was noted in the service sections of the reptile department. Only a few isolations were made in the public spaces. Selective enrichment in RVS was the most efficient. In combination with IMS, this method gave an even higher isolation rate than the International Standard method (ISO 6579:2002). SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: This study confirms the importance of reptiles as spreaders of Salmonella in their surroundings. The possible infectious risks for zoo personnel and visitors are evaluated. Improved laboratory protocols for the isolation of Salmonella from the environment are suggested.  相似文献

The reaction between 2,4,6-trinitrobenzene-1-sulphonic acid with 3,4-dihydroxy-phenylethylamine (dopamine) to form trinitrophenyl dopamine (TNP-dopamine) is found to be complex in that the TNP-dopamine is unstable. The course of the reaction shows TNP-dopamine rising to a steady state concentration equal to about half the initial dopamine concentration within 20 min and then decomposing with a half-time of about 1 hr. Continuous extraction into benzene to separate the TNP-dopamine from TNP-DOPA, which interferes with the spectrophotometric assay, also prevents the decomposition of TNP-dopamine so that quantitative recoveries are obtained. The method has been used to follow the course of a DOPA decarboxylase-catalysed reaction satisfactorily.  相似文献

New Ceratopogonidae from the Early Cretaceous amber of Hammana (Central Lebanon) are studied. Five new species (Lebanoculicoides daheri sp. nov., Protoculicoides krzeminskii sp. nov., Archiaustroconops annae sp. nov., Archiaustroconops hammanensis sp. nov., and Archiaustroconops dominiakae sp. nov.) are characterized, described, illustrated, and compared with other Cretaceous taxa. New keys for species of the three genera Lebanoculioides, Protoculicoides, and Archiaustroconops, but also for all genera of Lebanese fossil biting midges, are proposed.  相似文献
