Saccharina latissima is attractive for industrial cultivation for different usages, such as biofuels, feed supplements, and derivation of chemicals. A continuous supply of kelp sporelings throughout the year may ensure a year-round production of kelp juveniles on ropes. In this study, induction of sporangial areas (sorus portions) on the blade of S. latissima was performed throughout the year at three locations: Trondheim (Norway), Grenaa (Denmark), and Sylt island (Germany). The results indicate that a year-round sorus induction in S. latissima is possible and that this induction is controlled by applying short-day treatment of adult sporophytes throughout the year and by the removal of the basal blade meristem. The artificially induced and released zoospores formed viable sporelings at all seasons, but cultivation in the sea in Norway was successful only during autumn, winter, and spring, while the growth conditions were poor during the summer. The results are important for industrial scale-up and continuous production of kelp biomass.  相似文献

Monthly growth and reproduction of Undaria pinnatifida sporophytes were examined over a period of 5 months in a cultivation farm in Korea. A total of 11 characters of Undaria were measured to determine a reliable morphological character representing its growth and reproduction. Plant weight of Undaria sporophytes increased steadily over the experimental period, but it increased in four different ways. Undaria pinnatifida increased body weight by growth in length and width (October–early December), and by growth in width with the thickening of blade and stipe when sporophytes began to be fertile (December–January). In the middle of January, growth in length and width had almost stopped with the maturation of Undaria sporophytes. Finally, the weight of Undaria increased again by growth in width at the end of February. Present results indicate that Undaria sporophytes increase body weight by growth in length and width at different times, and the relationship between reproduction and vegetative growth is exclusive. Plant weight was positively correlated and fitted well with stipe width and blade width. The blade of Undaria was very thin (ca. 254 μm) and breakable by wave action, but its stipe was strong and relatively thick (ca. 8.7 mm). Furthermore, the fertility of U. pinnatifida was fitted better with stipe width than blade width. Thus, we suggest that the stipe width is the most feasible character with which to estimate the growth and reproduction of U. pinnatifida sporophytes in the cultivation farm.  相似文献

Laminaria saccharina (L) Lamour. Sporophytes were monitored monthly from October 1982 to September 1983 to investigate reproduction phenology and relationshiops to growth paatterns aaat its southern limit of distribution in the northwest Atlantic Ocean (Long Island Soundd). Plants exhibited an annual growth pattern. Growth raate, bladelehgth, maximum width, area, stiipe lehgth an wet weight swhoed the same seasonal pattern and reached maximum values between May and June. Only blade thickness continued to increase tthrooughout the ovservation period. Blade dissintegration occurred dduring August and September. Reproductive sporophytes occurred throughout the observation period; the greatest frequency of appearance occurred in October (43.8%) and June (37.8%). The blade area covered by sori ranged from 2.4% (Janaury) to 6.1% (August). Meiospore release under laboratory conditions was maximum in May and minimum in July. No meio-spores were released in August Sporulation was not correlated with meristematic growth of nitrogen content How ever, reproductive plants were generally larger and thicker throughout the sporulation period, and had a greater carbort content is spring than nonreproductive plants. Fecundity and reproductive success of female gametophytes were maximum in spring and minimum in winter. The growth of early sporophyte stages in the laboratory was greatest in early spring; however, juvenile macroscopic stages were hardly observed in the field during summer months due to warm water temperatures. “Over-summering” of gamelophytes and / or microscopic sporophytes may account for the annual cycle of Laminaria at its southern limit of distribution.  相似文献

The kelp Saccharina latissima is an economically important edible seaweed with great potential for use in other applications. The goal of this study was to identify locations in a coastal bay with better conditions for commercial cultivation of this species. We compared the biomass yield and morphological features of S. latissima cultivated at two locations in a bay of Galicia (northwest Spain): in an external moderately exposed site and in an internal sheltered site. Biomass yield was significantly higher at the moderately exposed site than at the sheltered site (16 fresh kg vs. 12 fresh kg per linear meter of rope). Fronds were significantly larger at the moderately exposed site compared to that at the sheltered site. However, the “substantiality value” (around 40 mg cm?2), which is an index used to assess blade quality for human consumption, did not differ significantly between the two locations. The effect of light exposure and water velocity seemed to be the most important environmental factors that explain the differences in the results obtained at both culture sites. In summary, both the moderately exposed site and the sheltered site were suitable for cultivation of S. latissima, as indicated by the high yields and similar blade quality obtained at both locations.  相似文献

Sorus formation in the kelp Laminaria longicruris de la Pylaie (Phaeophyta) was quantified for a biennial population in Long Island Sound (Connecticut, USA), at the southern limit of its biogeographical range in the Western Atlantic Ocean. The allocation of blade surface to reproduction was measured monthly during two years, with additional samples taken at times of peak growth and reproduction. Sporophytes produced sori year-round, with the highest percentages of fertile plants (75 to 95 percent) occurring from October to December. The mean percentage of sorus area to blade ranged from 1 to 37 percent, remaining low and fairly constant during the spring and summer, but reaching much higher levels in the fall (when growth is minimal) and early winter. The comparatively low mean annual allocation of blade surface to reproduction (5 percent), was postulated to be due to temperature stress on these plants at the southern limit of distribution, but may instead be typical of the species. Such a small allocation of resources to reproduction nevertheless results in billions of spores per m2 of substrate, making a major contribution of material potentially available to grazing food webs.  相似文献

Laminaria longissima and Zaohoucheng No.1 (a commercial variety selected from Laminaria japonica) differ to a certain extent in their morphological characteristics and biological habits. It was assumed that varieties bred through their hybridization should exhibit high yield potential and tolerate relatively high seawater temperatures. Female gametophyte clones isolated from L. longissima were crossed with male clones isolated from Zaohoucheng No.1. Laminaria variety 90-1 was obtained after gametophyte crossing, continuous self-crossing and selection. This variety was genetically homozygous; the indices of variation of blade length, width and thickness of the final two selection cycles were 7–8%; i.e., not different significantly. Variety 90-1 grew faster, lost less tissue and had higher yield potential than two widely used commercial varieties of L. japonica (all commercial varieties currently used in China originate from this latter species). The blade of variety 90-1 increased 3.71 cm day−1 on average during the whole period of cultivation, almost two-fold that of two controls, and growth was maintained even when seawater temperature was higher than 18°C–3°C higher than the temperature tolerated by other Laminaria varieties. Variety 90-1 increased yield by more than 70% over two controls and also synthesized desirable amounts of iodine, mannitol and algin. In blade length, variety 90-1 was more similar to L. longissima than to L. japonica, but more similar to L. japonica in blade width and thickness. Since the adoption of variety 90-1 in 1999, its culturing area has increased each year to reach its current area of 7,000 ha, i.e., almost one-third of the total cultivation acreage of Laminaria in China. Breeding of variety 90-1 has demonstrated that it is feasible to develop elite Laminaria varieties by crossing gametophytes from different Laminaria species in combination with successive self-crossing and selection.  相似文献

The North Sea–Baltic Sea transition zone constitutes a boundary area for the kelp species Saccharina latissima due to a strong salinity gradient operating in the area. Furthermore, the existence of S. latissima there, along Danish waters, is fairly patchy as hard bottom is scarce. In this study, patterns of genetic diversity of S. latissima populations were evaluated along the salinity gradient area of Danish waters (here designated brackish) and were compared to reference sites (here designated marine) outside the gradient area, using microsatellite markers. The results showed that the S. latissima populations were structured into two clusters corresponding to brackish versus marine sites, and that gene flow was reduced both between clusters and between populations within clusters. In addition, results provided empirical evidence that marginal populations of S. latissima in the salinity gradient area exhibited a distinct genetic structure when compared to marine ones. Brackish populations were less diverse, more related, and showed increased differentiation over distance compared to marine populations. The isolation of the brackish S. latissima populations within the salinity gradient area of Danish waters in conjunction with their general low genetic diversity makes these populations vulnerable to ongoing environmental and climate change, predicted to result in declining salinity in the Baltic Sea area that may alter the future distribution and performance of S. latissima in the area.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In Portugal, the European clam (Ruditapes decussatus) is an important commercial resource. Óbidos Lagoon is a strong candidate as a cultivation area to increase European clam exploitation. However, the reproductive biology of this population has not been described. In this work, the reproductive cycle of R. decussatus was characterized by determining gonadal development stages, gonad index, condition index, and biochemical composition. The relationship between reproduction and environmental parameters (sea surface temperature, chlorophyll a, and particulate organic matter) was assessed. Ruditapes decussatus had an annual reproductive cycle. The gametogenic cycle started in late winter, and the ripe stage in spring was followed by spawning that began at the end of spring/early summer and extended until early autumn. The subsequent period of sexual rest occurred during the winter. Condition index showed seasonal variations related to food availability (chlorophyll a). The European clams in Óbidos Lagoon recovered rapidly after their reproductive period, most likely owing to the availability of food. This study will help to improve sustainable management of this wild stock and is important for future aquaculture development of this species.  相似文献

The agarophyte red alga Gracilaria verrucosa occurs widely in Chilika Lake, one of the RAMSAR wetland sites in India. The lake is situated in the extreme southeast corner of Orissa between latitudes 19°28′ and 19°54′ N and longitudes 85°06′ and 85°35′ E. The natural biomass production is not sufficient for the agar industry, and the only alternative is to maximize the production of the seaweed through mass cultivation by seaweed farming. To elucidate important aspects of the growth and development of G. verrucosa, experimental field cultivation was undertaken at Langaleswar and Samal sites of Chilika Lake using ropes and raft methods during March to August, 2009. After 30 days of cultivation a maximum 15- and 13.8-fold increase in biomass in raft culture and rope culture, respectively, was observed at Langaleswar and an 11.6- and 11.0-fold increase in biomass at Samal. Environmental parameters such as temperature, salinity, pH, transparency, DO, conductivity, nitrate, and phosphate were monitored at both stations, and the influence of environmental parameters is discussed.  相似文献

Undaria pinnatifida sporophytes, originating from the same strain, were cultured at the commercial cultivation site exposed to wave action and the uncultivated site protected from water action of Okirai Bay, Northeast Japan, from January to April 2007; simultaneously, water flow velocity, water temperature, salinity, NO3 + NO2, and chlorophyll a were monitored to investigate the effect of water environment on their growth and morphology. Water temperature and salinity fluctuated within the optimal range for their growth whereas water flow velocity at the cultivation site was greatly fast compared with that at the uncultivated site. Successive chlorophyll a increases synchronized with NO3 + NO2 decreases were observed only at the uncultivated site for over a month; indicating developments of phytoplankton blooms and their nutrient consumption under the low-flow condition. Meanwhile, blade growth rate of cultured sporophytes was higher at the cultivation site than at the uncultivated site. Their thallus size expressed by six morphological characters (blade length, stipe length, blade wet weight, stipe wet weight, blade width, and undivided blade width) at the cultivation site became large in comparison with that at the uncultivated site. Their three morphological correlations (correlations between blade length and thallus length; blade wet weight and thallus wet weight; and undivided blade width and blade width) differed between the sites. They produced a thick and flat blade at the cultivation site but formed a thin and wrinkled blade at the uncultivated site. These results show the significant impact of water flow velocity on their growth and morphology.  相似文献

Decoupling of climate and hydrology combined with introduction of non-native species creates novel abiotic and biotic conditions along highly regulated rivers. Tamarix, a non-native shrub, dominates riparian assemblages along many waterways in the American Southwest, including the Colorado River through Grand Canyon. We conducted a tree-ring study to determine the relative influences of climate and hydrology on Tamarix establishment in Grand Canyon. Riparian vegetation was sparse and annually scoured by large floods until completion of Glen Canyon Dam, which allowed pioneer species, including Tamarix, to expand. Post-dam floods in the mid-1980s were associated with high Tamarix mortality but also initiated a large establishment event. Subsequent establishment has been low but continuous with some exceptions. From 1984 to 2006 establishment increased during years of high, late-summer flows followed by years of low precipitation. This combination provided moist surfaces for Tamarix establishment and may have caused reduced erosion of seedlings or reduced competition from native plants. Attempts to mimic pre-dam floods for ecosystem restoration through planned flood releases also have affected Tamarix establishment. Early (March 1996) and late (November 2004) restoration floods limited establishment, but a small restoration flood in May 2000 followed by steady summer flows permitted widespread establishment. Flood restoration is not expected to prevent Tamarix spread in this system because historic flood timing in May–July coincides with seed release. To decrease future Tamarix establishment, river managers should avoid floods during peak Tamarix seed release, which encompasses the historic spring and early summer flooding period. Tamarix dominance may be reduced by early spring floods that initiate asexual reproduction of clonal shrubs (e.g., Salix exigua, Pluchea sericea).  相似文献

Gonadal changes in two species of Cerastoderma occurring indiscrete populations in South Wales were monitored by stereologicalanalysis during the breeding seasons of 1981 and 1982. Fecundityand spawning efficiencies were determined quantitatively. Therelationship between reproductive activity and changes in meatcondition are discussed. Both species are opportunistic breeders. Their normal patternsof reproduction are similar, consisting of minimum activityin winter and peak activity during spring/early summer. Thetwo species were affected differently by the severe winter of1981–82—C. glau-cum exhibited a single, ‘epidemic’spawning and resumed gametogenesis after a 4-month resting period.C. edule adopted a ‘polycyclic’ pattern withouta resting period. Both of these unusual reproductive strategies, augmented by reduced predation resulted in heavy spatfalls. (Received 20 March 1985; revised 20 March 1985;  相似文献

Four strains of Kappaphycus alvarezii were cultivated in the subtropical waters of Florianópolis, Santa Catarina State, Brazil (27°29′19′′ S/48°32′28′′ W), from February 2009 to February 2010. Seaweeds were cultivated on floating raft near of mussel farms. Salinity ranged from 29 to 36 psu and temperature from 17.1 to 28.5°C. Higher growth rates (5.12–4.29% day−1) were measured in summer and autumn, showing a positive correlation between growth rate and water temperature. Lower growth rates (0.54–0.32% day−1) occurred in winter, resulted mainly by biomass loss. Significant differences were observed among the strains in spring and the brown tetrasporophytic strain was the only one which failed to recover, being excluded of the experiments. The effect of cultivation periods (36, 42, and 97 days) on carrageenan yield, gel strength, and viscosity were analyzed. Carrageenan yields were higher for plants kept 42 days in the sea (28%), against 25% for 36 and 97 days. There were no significant differences in carrageenan yield among the strains analyzed. Viscosity increased with the increase of cultivation period, while gel strength seemed to vary at random. Tetrasporangia and cystocarps were not observed, and lost fragments did not attach outside the raft. In general, dissolved inorganic nitrogen concentration decreased around the cultivation area as compared to the mussel farm. Results show that cultivation of K. alvarezii is technically feasible in subtropical waters and can be associated with local mussel farms, mitigating the eutrophication and, eventually, increasing the economic return of the farmers.  相似文献

Tropical kelp populations are rare and anomalous relicts of shallow‐water populations that existed during glacial periods of cooler oceanographic climate. The endemic Brazilian tropical kelp, Laminaria abyssalis Joly and Oliveira Filho, occurred at depths below 40 m. The seasonal variations in biological aspects of L. abyssalis sporophyte populations and local variations in seawater nutrients and temperature were evaluated. A population was sampled four times between the austral spring of 2005 to winter 2006. Seasonal variations in the population structure and in the tissue content of nitrogen (N), carbohydrate and pigments were observed. Higher density (6.3 individuals m?2), biomass (7.3 kg m?2) and blade area (13 221 cm2) were observed in summer, while the highest percentage of tissue total N (1.6%), carbohydrates (32.9%) and photosynthetic pigments (chlorophyll a = 1.9% and chlorophyll c = 0.4%) were observed in spring. The highest surface area of fertile tissue in L. abyssalis sporophytes (2.36%) was recorded in winter, indicating winter as the season when more investments are made in reproduction. The highest concentrations of total N (6.3 μM) and phosphate (0.6 μM) in seawater were observed in spring and summer, respectively. Seawater temperatures lower than 20°C, which are characteristic of upwelling waters, occurred every month and were most frequent in spring and summer. We show that L. abyssalis invests more in growth in spring and summer and reaches the greatest thallus size and population density in summer. The lower abundance during winter may be related to the lower frequency of temperatures below 20°C and the local seasonal storms that cause turnover of rhodoliths, the main substrate for L. abyssalis.  相似文献

Ropes seeded directly with Saccharina latissima were deployed at different exposures (sheltered, current exposed and wave exposed) in a Faroese sound and characteristics of growth and quality of the biomass and surroundings were evaluated during the growth season from March to August 2015. Saccharina latissima individuals cultivated at the current exposed location were heavier compared to the individuals cultivated at the other locations; however, the total biomass yield was significantly lower at the current exposed location. The protein and nutritional value of the biomass varied with season but showed no correlation with exposure. The highest protein levels and EAA (essential amino acid) score were measured in the spring (April and May) samples. The amino acid composition was dominated by glutamate followed by aspartic acid; however, this was replaced by methionine in the July samples. Total Kjeldahl nitrogen was significantly higher in May and August compared to July, and the nitrate concentration in the biomass was significantly lower in May and August compared to July. Nitrate was most available in the seawater at the time of deployment (3rd of March) and decreased during spring and summer. Saccharina latissima was cultivated successfully at the sheltered, current exposed and wave exposed locations using a direct seeding method. However, our results indicate that the lower biomass yield at the current exposed cultivation location compared to the sheltered and wave exposed are due to the direct seeding method, and possible limitations using this method need further testing and optimization.  相似文献

The epifauna associated with two of the most common species of kelp in the Arctic, Laminaria digitata (Hudson) Lamouroux, 1813 and Saccharina latissima (Linnaeus) Lane, , Mayes, Druehl and Saunders 2006 [synonym: L. saccharina (Linnaeus) Lamouroux, 1813] were examined in Kongsfjorden, Svalbard. The aim of this study was to test whether species richness of epifauna was influenced by seasonality of recruitment supply (spring and summer) or by age of the substrate (lamina). From 20 algae specimens (ten—L. digitata, ten—S. latissima), a total of 27 epifaunal taxa were identified with bryozoans as the most species-rich group. Total species richness ranged from one to nine species per lamina. No significant difference in species richness was observed between the two kelp species. In both macroalgae, more epifauna taxa were registered on lamina in May (mean 6) than in August (mean 3). This indicates that the time chosen for sampling had a significant impact on the species richness pattern. The number of epifaunal species was significantly negatively correlated with increasing age of the lamina. There are indications that diversity of the epifauna on lamina is influenced to a large extent by substrate (lamina) surface area, environmental stress and the presence of meroplankton in the water column.  相似文献

Climate change has been shown to affect the timing of reproduction, with earlier reproduction being associated with an increase in temperature. Changes in the timing of reproduction arise from changes in food availability as well as other factors, and differences in the timing of reproduction among sites may cause sites with early reproduction to contribute disproportionately to local recruitment. In this study, spatial variation in the laying date of barn swallows Hirundo rustica at 39 sites in a 45-km2study area during the period 1971–2004 was used to investigate micro-geographic patterns in the timing of breeding. I found that individuals breeding at sites with early reproduction had a disproportionately large reproductive success. Early sites were characterized by early plant phenology, as determined by the date of leafing of the broad-leaved elm Ulmus glabra and date of flowering of the snowdrop Galanthus nivalis during a single year. Such early sites showed greater advancement in laying date between 1971 and 2004 than the average site. Early sites were also generally occupied during more years by a larger number of breeders than were late sites. Breeders at early sites produced more fledglings, and breeders at such sites were characterized by a smaller adult body size and larger secondary sexual characters than individuals at the average site. These observations are consistent with the hypothesis that temporal changes in the timing of reproduction occur as a consequence of differential recruitment at phenologically early sites that produce disproportionately large numbers of offspring. Most works concerning growth and reproduction of Mediterranean sponges have been performed in the oligotrophic western Mediterranean while little is known about sponge dynamics in the North-western Adriatic Sea, a basin characterized by low winter temperature and eutrophy. In order to deepen our understanding of sponges in the North Adriatic Sea and verify how its peculiar trophic and physical conditions affect sponge life cycles, temporal trend of sponge cover (%) and reproductive timing of Chondrosia reniformis and Tedania (Tedania) anhelans were studied over a 1-year period looking for a possible relation with variations of temperature or food availability. In C. reniformis, although little variations of sponge cover were evidenced around the year, the number of individuals and their size increase during spring. Asexual reproduction, via drop-like propagules, mainly occurs in spring and summer, while sexual reproduction is characterized by a maximum number of oocytes in August. T. anhelans progressively grows from spring to summer and develops propagules on its surface that reach their maximum size in July. In autumn, the sponge undergoes a process of progressive shrinkage and almost disappears in winter when temperature reaches 7–8°C. Larvae occur during summer. In the North Adriatic Sea sponges have larger sizes, higher density and a wider period of oocytes production compared with the same species from the Mediterranean Sea, suggesting these differences could be due to high food availability characterizing the eutrophic Adriatic basin. On the contrary, the sharp water temperature variations and the very low winter temperature, 5–6°C lower than what has been reported for the Mediterranean Sea, regulate temporal variations in abundance and cause the disappearance of thermophile species during winter.  相似文献

This study evaluated a technique to allow the long‐term monitoring of individual fishes of known sex in the wild using sex confirmation in close proximity to the reproductive period combined with individual tagging. Hundreds of partially migratory roach Rutilus rutilus were tagged with passive integrated transponders (PIT) following sex determination in spring and various performance measures were compared with fish tagged outside the reproductive period in autumn. Short‐term survival was >95% for R. rutilus sexed and tagged under natural field conditions. Total length (LT) did not affect the probability of survival within the size range tagged (119–280 mm), nor were there differences in timing of migration the following season between individuals sexed and tagged in spring and individuals tagged in autumn (i.e. outside the reproductive period). Also, a similar per cent of R. rutilus sexed and tagged in spring and tagged in autumn migrated the following season (34·5 and 34·7%). Moreover, long‐term recapture data revealed no significant differences in body condition between R. rutilus individuals sexed and tagged in spring, individuals tagged in autumn and unmanipulated individuals. The observed sex ratio of recaptured fish did not differ from the expected values of equal recapture rates between males and females. Hence, there is no observable evidence for an adverse effect of tagging close to the reproductive period and therefore this method is suitable for studying intersexual differences and other phenotypic traits temporarily expressed during reproduction at the individual level in fishes.  相似文献
