 Carbon dioxide (CO2) exchange was studied at flark (minerotrophic hollow), lawn and hummock microsites in an oligotrophic boreal pine fen. Statistical response functions were constructed for the microsites in order to reconstruct the annual CO2 exchange balance from climate data. Carbon accumulation was estimated from the annual net CO2 exchange, methane (CH4) emissions and leaching of carbon. Due to high water tables in the year 1993, the average carbon accumulation at the flark, Eriophorum lawn, Carex lawn and hummock microsites was high, 2.91, 6.08, 2.83 and 2.66 mol C m–2, respectively, and for the whole peatland it was 5.66 mol m–2 year–1. During the maximum primary production period in midsummer, hummocks with low water tables emitted less methane than predicted from the average net ecosystem exchange (NEE), while the Carex lawns emitted slightly more. CH4 release during that period corresponded to 16% of the contemporary NEE. Annual C accumulation rate did not correlate with annual CH4 release in the microsites studied, but the total community CO2 release seemed to be related to CH4 emissions in the wet microsites, again excluding the hummocks. The dependence of CO2 exchange dynamics on weather events suggests that daily balances in C accumulation are labile and can change from net carbon uptake to net release, primarily in high hummocks on fens under warmer, drier climatic conditions. Testate amoebae are an abundant and functionally important group of protists in peatlands, but little is known about the seasonal patterns of their communities. We investigated the relationships between testate amoeba diversity and community structure and water table depth and light conditions (shading vs. insolation) in a Sphagnum peatland in Northern Poland (Linje mire) in spring and summer 2010. We monitored the water table at five sites across the peatland and collected Sphagnum samples in lawn and hummock micro-sites around each piezometer, in spring (3 May) and mid-summer (6 August) 2010. Water table differed significantly between micro-sites and seasons (Kruskal–Wallis test, p = 0.001). The community structure of testate amoebae differed significantly between spring and summer in both hummock and lawn micro-sites. We recorded a small, but significant drop in Shannon diversity, between spring and summer (1.76 vs. 1.72). Strongest correlations were found between testate amoeba communities and water table lowering and light conditions. The relative abundance of mixotrophic species Hyalosphenia papilio, Archerella flavum and of Euglypha ciliata was higher in the summer.  相似文献

 Temporal and spatial variation in CH4 emissions was studied at hummock, Eriophorum lawn, flark and Carex lawn microsites in an oligotrophic pine fen over the growing season using a static chamber method, and CH4 production and oxidation potentials in peat profiles from hummock and flark were determined in laboratory incubation experiments. Emissions were lowest in the hummocks, and decreased with increasing hummock height, while in the lawns and flarks they increased with increasing sedge cover. Statistical response functions with water table and peat temperature as independent variables were calculated in order to reconstruct seasonal CH4 emissions by reference to the time series for peat temperature and water table specific to each microsite type. Mean CH4 emissions in the whole area in the snow-free period of 1993, weighted in terms of the proportions of the microsites, were 1.7 mol CH4 m–2. Potential CH4 production and oxidation rates were very low in the hummocks rising above the groundwater table, but were relatively similar when expressed per dry weight of peat both in the hummocks and flarks below the water table. The CH4 production potential increased in autumn at both microsites and CH4 oxidation potential seemed to decrease. The decrease in temperature in autumn certainly reduced in situ decomposition processes, possibly leaving unused substrates in the peat, which would explain the increase in CH4 production potential. The ecology of peatland testate amoebae is well studied along broad gradient from very wet (pool) to dry (hummock) micro-sites where testate amoebae are often found to respond primarily to the depth to water table (DWT). Much less is known on their responses to finer-scale gradients, and nothing is known of their possible response to phenolic compounds, which play a key role in carbon storage in peatlands. We studied the vertical (0–3, 3–6, and 6–9 cm sampling depths) micro-distribution patterns of testate amoebae in the same microhabitat (Sphagnum fallax lawn) along a narrow ecological gradient between a poor fen with an almost flat and homogeneous Sphagnum carpet (fen) and a “young bog” (bog) with more marked micro-topography and mosaic of poor fen and bog vegetation. We analyzed the relationships between the testate amoeba data and three sets of variables (1) “chemical” (pH, Eh potential, and conductivity), (2) “physical” (water temperature, altitude, i.e., Sphagnum mat micro-topography, and DWT), and (3) phenolic compounds in/from Sphagnum (water-soluble and primarily bound phenolics) as well as the habitat (fen/bog) and the sampling depth. Testate amoeba Shannon H′ diversity, equitability J of communities, and total density peaked in lower parts of Sphagnum, but the patterns differed between the fen and bog micro-sites. Redundancy analyses revealed that testate amoeba communities differed significantly in relation to Eh, conductivity, water temperature, altitude, water-soluble phenolics, habitat, and sampling depth, but not to DWT, pH, or primarily bound phenolics. The sensitivity of testate amoebae to weak environmental gradients makes them particularly good integrators of micro-environmental variations and has implications for their use in paleoecology and environmental monitoring. The correlation between testate amoeba communities and the concentration of water-soluble phenolic suggests direct (e.g., physiological) and/or indirect (e.g., through impact on prey organisms) effects on testate amoebae, which requires further research.  相似文献

The growth of hummock Sphagnum species in bogs depends on hydrological and climatic conditions, with different hummock morphologies being found across geographical regions. We investigated how plant shade and winter snow-load regulate the growth pattern and height of Sphagnum papillosum hummocks in a cool-temperate bog in Japan. Hummocks were subjected to four treatments across 2?years (1 hummock per treatment per year): no treatment (control), snow-load-free (S), vascular plant trimming (T), and snow-load-free and vascular plant trimming in combination (S&T). Further, the effects of vascular plant cover and snow -load on the vertical growth and height of hummocks were examined. Annual growth rates of S. papillosum were higher for the control (34?C41?mm) than S&T treatment, and were intermediate for separate S and T treatments. In contrast to vascular plant-growing hummocks, vascular plant-trimmed hummocks showed a negative correlation between water-table depth (measured from the capitulum to the water-table) and Sphagnum growth. Hence, in summer, shading by vascular plants may prevent desiccation and facilitate the growth of Sphagnum. Snow-loaded hummocks were weighed down by 3?C11?cm. After snowmelt, the shoots continued to grow within the water-table depth range that allowed growth. Hence, heavy winter snow-loads may depress the surfaces of hummocks closer to the water-table, which stimulates Sphagnum growth, resulting in the recovery of hummock height. Thus, the water stress caused by summer desiccation is critical in regulating the upper limit of hummock height in bogs subject to dry summer conditions and heavy winter snowfall.  相似文献

The distribution patterns of epiphytic diatom assemblages in three montane mires in central China were investigated to examine their relationships with selected environmental variables (pH and depth to water table, DWT). Two of the mires are considered to be in good ecological condition (Dajiuhu and Qizimeishan Mires) while Erxianyan Mire is extensively affected by acid deposition and human activities. A total of 206 taxa belonging to 56 genera were found in 44 Sphagnum samples. Multivariate analysis revealed that pH and DWT were significantly correlated with diatom distribution. In Erxianyan Mire, the characteristic taxa (Eunotia minor and Eunotia intermedia) had lower pH optima and may therefore be useful indicators of highly-acidic conditions. In Dajiuhu Mire, the dominant species had higher pH optima, and abundant xerotolerant taxa (Hantzschia amphioxys, Pinnularia borealis, Luticola mutica and Diadesmis contenta) were observed. In the partial canonical correspondence analyses with mire location as a covariable, the correlation between diatom data and pH was insignificant, likely because pH differences between mires were greater than those within mires. In contrast, diatom data were significantly correlated with DWT, suggesting that diatoms are good sensors of hydrological variability along the hollow to hummock gradient. Together, these data can expand current autecological information for these potential diatom indicator species, which is critical for refining our interpretations of bio-monitoring and palaeolimnological studies in montane mires.  相似文献

The methane produced in peat soils can vary over the growing season due to variations in the supply of available substrate, the activity of the microbial community or changes in temperature. Our aim was to study how these factors regulate the methane production over the season from five different peat types of different botanical origin. Peat samples were collected on seven occasions between June and September. After each sampling, the peat soils were incubated at five different temperatures (7, 10, 15, 20 and 25 degrees C) without added substrate, or at 20 degrees C with added substrate (glucose, or H(2)/CO(2), or starch). Rates of methane production averaged over the season differed significantly (P<0.05, R(2)=0.76) among the five peat types, the minerotrophic lawn producing the highest rates, and the hummock peat producing the lowest. The seasonal average Q(10) values for each plant community varied between 4.6 and 9.2, the highest value being associated with the ombrotrophic lawn and the lowest value with the mud-bottom plant community. For the unamended peat samples, the rates of methane production from each plant community varied significantly (P<0.05) over the season. This implies that the quality of organic matter, in combination with changes in temperature, explains the seasonal variation in methane production. However, addition of saturating amounts of glucose, H(2)/CO(2) or starch at 20 degrees C significantly reduced the seasonal variation (P<0.05) in methane production in peat from the minerotrophic lawn, wet carpet and mud-bottom plant communities. This suggests that substrate supply (e.g. root exudates) for the micro-organisms also varied over the season at these sites. Seasonal variation in methane production rates was apparent in peat from the hummock and ombrotrophic lawn plant communities even after addition of substrates, suggesting that the active biomass of the anaerobic microbial populations at these sites was regulated by other factors than the ones studied.  相似文献

We studied the relationship between testate amoebae (Protozoa) communities and the depth to the water table (DWT), pH, conductivity, and microhabitat type in Sphagnum dominated peatlands of north-western Poland and built predictive (transfer function) models for inferring DWT and pH based on the testate amoebae community structure. Such models can be used for peatland monitoring and paleoecology. A total of 52 testate amoebae taxa were recorded. In a redundancy analysis, DWT and pH explained 20.1% of the variation in the species data and allowed us to identify three groups of taxa: species that are associated with (1) high DWT and low pH, (2) low DWT and low pH, and (3) high pH and mid-range DWT. Our transfer function models allow DWT and pH to be estimated with mean errors of 9.89 cm and 0.71 pH units. The prediction error of the DWT model and the tolerance of the species both increase with increasing dryness. This pattern mirrors the ecology of Sphagnum mosses: Species growing in wet habitats are more sensitive to change in water table depth than the species growing in drier microhabitats. Our results are consistent with studies of testate amoeba ecology in other regions, and they provide additional support for the use of these organisms in paleoecological and biomonitoring contexts.  相似文献

Wetlands, including peatlands, are the main source of natural methane emission. Well-defined fen microsites have different methane emissions rates, but it is not known whether the methane-producing Archaea communities vary at these sites. Possible horizontal variations of communities, in a natural oligotrophic fen, were analysed by characterizing the methanogens from two well-defined microsites: Eriophorum lawn and Hummock. Community structures were studied at two different layers of the fen, showing, respectively, high and low methane production. The structure of methanogen populations was determined using molecular techniques targeting the 16SrRNA gene and combined denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) and restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis. Results subjected to non-metric multidimensional scaling (MDS), diversity indices calculation and phylogenetic analysis revealed that upper layer communities changed with site while deeper layer communities remained the same. Phylogenetic analyses revealed six different clusters of sequences grouping with only two known orders of methanogens. Upper layers of Hummock were dominated by sequences clustering with members of Methanomicrobiales and sequences dominating the upper part of the Eriophorum lawn were related to members of the order Methanosarcinales. Novel methanogenic sequences were found at both sites at both depths. Vegetation characterizing the microsites probably influences the microbial communities in the layers of the fen where methane is produced.  相似文献

黄河源区丘-洼微生境对高寒沼泽草甸植物群落的影响 黄河源区高寒沼泽草甸中有许多不均匀的小丘和洼地,形成了独特的微生境,深刻影响着植物特性和土壤养分含量。通过研究高寒湿地冻融丘和洼地空间异质性对植物群落和土壤性质的影响,可以深入了解微地形水文条件对丘-洼微生境空间波动的影响。本研究在黄河源区高寒沼泽湿地的冻融丘 (淹水和无淹水)和洼地(蓄水和无蓄水)共设置36个样地(1 m × 1 m),采集了45个植物样和225个土壤样, 并采用比较法评价高寒沼泽湿地是否存在“肥岛效应”。研究结果显示,冻融丘的存在增加了微生境的 空间异质性,促进了藏嵩草群落的物种多样性和土壤肥力。淹水和无淹水的冻融丘生境下的植物高度、 盖度、地上生物量、物种丰富度和多样性均显著高于湿地外围的高寒草甸。与高寒草甸相比,高寒沼泽 湿地丘-洼复合体为莎草科植物的生长提供了有利的微生境。另外,湿地丘-洼微生境与周围高寒草甸 在0–50 cm土层之间的比较表明,土壤有机碳和全氮距离地表越近含量越高。在深层次土壤中,丘洼微生 境与高寒草甸土壤养分之间的差距变小。因此,湿地丘-洼微生境形成了一个富饶的“肥沃岛”格局。这些研究结果有助于加深对高寒沼泽草甸生态系统恢复的认识。  相似文献

Sphagnum peatlands host a high abundance of protists, especially testate amoebae. Here, we designed a study to investigate the functional diversity of testate amoebae in relation to wetness and forest cover in Baltic bogs. We provided new data on the influence of openness/wetness gradient on testate amoebae communities, showing significant differences in selected testate amoebae (TA) traits. Three key messages emerged from our investigations: 1) we recorded an effect of peatland surface openness on testate amoebae functional traits that led us to accept the hypothesis that TA traits differ according to light intensity and hydrology. Mixotrophic species were recorded in high relative abundance in open plots, whereas they were nearly absent in forested sites; 2) we revealed a hydrological threshold for the occurrence of mixotrophic testate amoebae that might be very important in terms of peatland functioning and carbon sink vs. source context; and 3) mixotrophic species with organic tests were nearly absent in forested sites that were dominated by heterotrophic species with agglutinated or idiosomic tests. An important message from this study is that taxonomy of TA rather indicates the hydrological gradient whereas traits of mixotrophs the openness gradient.  相似文献

根据晋、陕、宁、蒙地区13个样地的野外调查资料,采用丰富度指数、物种多样性指数以及均匀度指数,研究了柠条锦鸡儿群落物种多样性对放牧干扰和气象因子的响应。结果表明:(1)晋、陕、宁、蒙地区柠条锦鸡儿群落组成成分简单,共记录种子植物111种,分属25科,64属,灌木层优势种为柠条锦鸡儿,草本层优势种集中于禾本科、豆科、菊科蒿属和藜科;(2)受人为干扰、土壤和气候等影响,群落的组成、结构及其综合性质具有一定差异性,主要表现在群落的Patrick指数与Simpson指数、Shannon-wiener指数出现较大的波动,且波动趋势基本一致,Pielou指数表现较为稳定;(3)放牧干扰强度与群落Simpson指数、Shannon-wiener指数呈极显著相关(P<0.01),与Patrick指数、Pielou指数呈显著相关(P<0.05),群落丰富度随放牧干扰强度的增大而下降,群落多样性和均匀度指数在D2和D3时呈现峰值,表明适度干扰可以提高群落物种多样性和均匀度;(4)Patrick指数、Simpson指数和Shannon-wiener指数均与年均降水量呈极显著正相关(P<0.01),与相对湿度呈显著正相关(P<0.05),共同体现了水分条件是制约柠条锦鸡儿群落物种多样性的决定性因子。  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted for developing restoration techniques for pool margin communities in cutover peatlands. We first aimed to measure the regeneration potential of a typical edge pool liverwort, Cladopodiella fluitans (Nees) H. Buch. We introduced C. fluitans in floating baskets in a restored peatland. We tested three fragment sizes (patches of 2 cm2, stretched patches and shredded fine fragments of 0.1-1 mm), two introduction densities (ratio between surface of collected areas and surface of restored areas of 1:5 and 1:10) as well as the effect of a straw mulch. After two years, the percentage covers of C. fluitans were five times larger in experimental units protected with straw than in those without protection. Yet, the fragment sizes and the densities tested had no effect on the regeneration of the liverwort. The second experiment aimed to test a moss layer transfer approach to restore plant diversity around pool margins. We tested four communities, dominated by (1) Sphagnum cuspidatum Hoffman, (2) Sphagnum fallax (H. Klinggraff) H. Klinggraff, (3) Sphagnum papillosum Linberg as well as (4) a mixed community composed of equal quantities of C. fluitans, S. cuspidatum and S. papillosum. We introduced plant material in two density ratios (1:5 and 1:10). Sphagnum mosses did colonize pool margins, and showed even more than 60% cover for some treatments after three growing seasons, but the recovery of the introduced vascular plants remained below 5% for most species. The establishment of pool vascular species thus seems to be more intricate than for bryophytes and specific introduction techniques might be needed.  相似文献

The stress-gradient hypothesis (SGH) predicts that the relative importance of competition decreases and facilitation increases with an increase in abiotic stress. In peatlands, Sphagnum faces the threat of drought and differentiates into hummock species (drought-tolerant) and hollow species. Whether interspecific interaction affects the influence of drought on bryophyte composition in peatlands is unknown. We established an experiment by simulating drought and building bryophyte communities with two hummock species (S. palustre and S. capillifolium) and one hollow species (S. fallax). In all three species, drought decreased biomass production, height increment and side-shoot production. Sphagnum stores water in the hyaline cells, and leaf hyaline cell percentage (HCP) in the two hummock species increased with drought while no effect was found in S. fallax, suggesting that adjusting HCP is not an effective response to drought for the hollow species. Morphological traits and carbon and nitrogen contents in hummock species responded more to drought than in the hollow species, indicating a rapid response in phenotypic plasticity is an important strategy to resist drought in the hummock species. The presence of neighboring Sphagnum species, rather than drought, decreased carbon content for all three species. All three bryophytes showed interaction between drought and neighbor in two or more plant traits. Our study, however, did not support SGH, and there were no changes from competition under wet to facilitation under dry treatments in any of the six species combinations. On the contrary, when S. fallax was the target species, a change from facilitation under wet to competition under dry treatments was observed. The results suggest that hummock species can facilitate hollow species in wet environments but they could suppress hollow species under drought conditions by competing for water resources. Both drought and strong competition are the probable reasons why hollow species rarely grow in hummocks.  相似文献

Polycomb repressive complex 1 (PRC1) plays an essential role in the epigenetic repression of gene expression during development and cellular differentiation via multiple effector mechanisms, including ubiquitination of H2A and chromatin compaction. However, whether it regulates the stepwise progression of adipogenesis is unknown. Here, we show that FBXL10/KDM2B is an anti-adipogenic factor that is up-regulated during the early phase of 3T3-L1 preadipocyte differentiation and in adipose tissue in a diet-induced model of obesity. Interestingly, inhibition of adipogenesis does not require the JmjC demethylase domain of FBXL10, but it does require the F-box and leucine-rich repeat domains, which we show recruit a noncanonical polycomb repressive complex 1 (PRC1) containing RING1B, SKP1, PCGF1, and BCOR. Knockdown of either RING1B or SKP1 prevented FBXL10-mediated repression of 3T3-L1 preadipocyte differentiation indicating that PRC1 formation mediates the inhibitory effect of FBXL10 on adipogenesis. Using ChIP-seq, we show that FBXL10 recruits RING1B to key specific genomic loci surrounding the key cell cycle and the adipogenic genes Cdk1, Uhrf1, Pparg1, and Pparg2 to repress adipogenesis. These results suggest that FBXL10 represses adipogenesis by targeting a noncanonical PRC1 complex to repress key genes (e.g. Pparg) that control conversion of pluripotent cells into the adipogenic lineage.  相似文献

Tropical peatlands represent globally important carbon sinks with a unique biodiversity and are currently threatened by climate change and human activities. It is now imperative that proxy methods are developed to understand the ecohydrological dynamics of these systems and for testing peatland development models. Testate amoebae have been used as environmental indicators in ecological and palaeoecological studies of peatlands, primarily in ombrotrophic Sphagnum-dominated peatlands in the mid- and high-latitudes. We present the first ecological analysis of testate amoebae in a tropical peatland, a nutrient-poor domed bog in western (Peruvian) Amazonia. Litter samples were collected from different hydrological microforms (hummock to pool) along a transect from the edge to the interior of the peatland. We recorded 47 taxa from 21 genera. The most common taxa are Cryptodifflugia oviformis, Euglypha rotunda type, Phryganella acropodia, Pseudodifflugia fulva type and Trinema lineare. One species found only in the southern hemisphere, Argynnia spicata, is present. Arcella spp., Centropyxis aculeata and Lesqueresia spiralis are indicators of pools containing standing water. Canonical correspondence analysis and non-metric multidimensional scaling illustrate that water table depth is a significant control on the distribution of testate amoebae, similar to the results from mid- and high-latitude peatlands. A transfer function model for water table based on weighted averaging partial least-squares (WAPLS) regression is presented and performs well under cross-validation (r \(^{2}_{apparent} \,=\, 0.76, \text {RMSE} \,=\, 4.29; \mathrm {r}^{2}_{jack} \,=\, 0.68, \text {RMSEP} \,=\, 5.18\) ). The transfer function was applied to a 1-m peat core, and sample-specific reconstruction errors were generated using bootstrapping. The reconstruction generally suggests near-surface water tables over the last 3,000 years, with a shift to drier conditions at c. cal. 1218-1273 AD.  相似文献

Samples of 22 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and related derivatives were subjected to 60Co gamma radiation in air, and the irradiated samples were tested for mutagenicity with the Salmonella typhimurium strains TA 98, TA 1535, TA 1537, and TA 1538. Testing was conducted with the bacterial strains alone, thus not fortified with liver-microsomal enzymes or other metabolizing systems. Marked mutagen responses were obtained for several irradiated samples with the TA 98, TA 1537, and TA 1538 strains but not with the TA 1535 strain. Irradiated samples of benzo[a]anthracene, benzanthrone, benozo[g,h,i]perylene, benzo[a]pyrene, chrysene, fluorene, 9-methylanthracene, 1-methylphenanthrene, 2-methylphenanthrene, and pyrene gave positive mutagenic tests and dose-responses, whereas unirradiated control samples of these were inactive. Acenaphthene, phenanthrene, and phenanthrenequinone exhibited toxicity which interfered with interpretation of mutagenicity testing. Samples of 2-methylanthracene and tetracene were mutagenic with or without irradiation. Alizarin, anthracene, anthraquinone, anthrone, dobenzo[a,h]anthracene, picene, and triphenylene negative results. Samples of benzo[a]pyrene adsorbed on silica gel irradiated in air by 60Co gamma radiation or by 254 nm ultraviolet light and samples adsorbed on filter paper irradiated by visible light yielded preparations mutagenic towards the TA 98, TA 1537, and TA 1538 strains. These results suggest that parent polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons not themselves mutagenic towards S. typhimurium may be oxidized in air by radiation-induced processes to products whose mutagenicity resembles that of liver-microsomal metabolites of the parent polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon.  相似文献
