Using positive reinforcement, J. McKinley trained 12 common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) to provide urine samples on request. The study then exposed the marmosets to mildly stressful, routine husbandry procedures (i.e., capture and weighing). The nonhuman animals spent less time inactive poststressor as opposed to prestressor. L. Bassett collected matched behavioral data from 12 nontrained marmosets who were less accustomed to human interaction. These animals spent significantly more time self-scratching and locomoting as well as less time inactive, poststressor. Collapsed data from the 2 populations showed increased scent marking, poststressor. These results suggest that locomotion, self-scratching, and scent marking are useful, noninvasive behavioral measures of stress and, thus, reduced welfare in the common marmoset. Overall, nontrained animals showed more self-scratching than did their trained counterparts. It was not possible to collect urine from nontrained marmosets. In response to the stressor, however, trained animals showed no significant change in excreted urinary cortisol. These results suggest that training marmosets may allow them to cope better with routine laboratory procedures.  相似文献

Male mammals show rapid behavioral and hormonal responses to signals from sexually receptive females. However, rapid endocrine responses to female signals have not been observed in a nonhuman primate. Here, we tested the behavioral and hormonal response of male common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) to isolated scent secretions from ovulatory females or to vehicle control scent. Fifteen males were tested in their home cage for behavioral and hormonal responses. These males showed increased investigative and arousal behaviors to the ovulatory scent compared to the vehicle scent. Time sniffing the scent substrate and the duration of erections were significantly elevated in relation to the vehicle scent. Thirty minutes after presentation of ovulatory scent, males showed a significant increase in testosterone compared to the vehicle, but there was no difference in cortisol values. To better control for scent presentation, 15 additional males were tested under a controlled scent exposure. Current social housing condition influenced the male's testosterone response to the ovulatory scent. Single and paired males showed significant increases in testosterone levels with the ovulatory scent but did not increase cortisol levels. Single males also showed the highest change in testosterone with the ovulatory scent, but fathers showed no changes. These results indicate that a rapid hormonal response to sexually arousing cues occurs in marmosets, and the data suggest that a male's social condition influences how he responds to sexually relevant cues.  相似文献

Common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) males are bi-parental non-human primates that show extensive paternal behaviour. Fathers are in direct sensory contact with their infants during the natal period. We found that fathers exposed to isolated scents of their infant displayed a significant drop in serum testosterone levels within 20min after exposure, whereas parentally naive males did not. These data suggest that infant's scent may have a causal role in regulating paternal testosterone in their fathers. This is the first study to demonstrate that olfactory cues have an acute effect on paternal care.  相似文献

Individual discrimination is likely a prerequisite for most primate social interactions. Olfactory cues are one set of stimuli used by primates to discriminate between individuals. Despite the importance of these olfactory signatures, there is little published research assessing the existence or function of individually unique odors among primates. This review systematically assesses behavioral and biochemical aspects of individual odors in a New World primate, the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus). There are three objectives to this review: First, behavioral evidence for odors unique to the individual is evaluated in the context of results demonstrating that marmosets are able to discriminate between the scents from a familiar and a novel individual conspecific in behavioral bioassays under a variety of conditions. Second, biochemical evidence for individual scent signatures is debated with reference to studies examining qualitative and quantitative differences between the chemical compositions of scent-mark pools from adult females. A combined gas chromatography (GC) and mass spectrometry (MS) analysis demonstrated that each female had a unique ratio of highly volatile chemicals in the scent mark that could affect individual discrimination. Finally, the possible adaptive significance of individual odors in marmosets is debated. Individual odors may play a key role in regulating both female intrasexual competition and intersexual communication by providing a basis for the assessment of individual quality.  相似文献

Abdominal palpation of the uterus was carried out on 25 pregnant and 29 non-pregnant marmosets (Callithrix jacchus jacchus). 195 complete 24-hour urine specimens, collected between the first week of gestation and term (21 weeks), were tested with the Sub-Human Primate Tube (SHPT) test. No significant differences between the two methods in their ability to diagnose pregnancy were obtained between the first and 13th week of gestation. The SHPT test was seldom positive after the 13th week of pregnancy, whereas, with one exception, palpation always indicated pregnancy.  相似文献

This study reports on the longitudinal changes in scent marking frequencies of male and female lion tamarins in relation to age, reproductive status, and group composition. Juvenile males and females in family groups and subordinate males in trios (2 males, 1 female) scent marked infrequently. Juvenile females scent marked less than juvenile males and began scent marking later. Adult pair-bonded males and females scent marked with similar frequencies. Females showed scent marking increases during mid-pregnancy, but their scent marking decreased both before and again after parturition. Both males and females exhibited decreases in scent marking while transporting dependent infants.  相似文献

I investigated whether scent marking has a territorial function in wild moustached tamarins. I examined the spatial distribution of scent marking within the home ranges of four groups of this neotropical primate and tested predictions from Gorman & Mills' (1984, Journal of Zoology,202, 535-547) model for border and 'hinterland' marking. Although home ranges were economically defensible, no evidence was found for increased marking along the territorial boundary or in areas of home range overlap, but there was also no evidence for hinterland marking. Observed distributions of scent marking in exclusively used and overlapping areas of the home range did not deviate from distributions that would be expected if scent marking occurred at random (expectation based both on size of area and on frequency of quadrat occupation), and there was a strong correlation between frequency of quadrat occupation and frequency of scent marking per quadrat. These results indicate that scent marking has no territorial function in moustached tamarins. This is in line with mainly qualitative findings from the majority of other studies on wild marmosets and tamarins. These and other findings on scent marking in moustached tamarins suggest that this behaviour functions mainly in intersexual communication. The desert gerbil, M. hurrianae scent marks the general substratum in its territory with the sebum exudation of mid abdominal gland and urine. Having assessed number of functions, which scent marking plays in the social life of these rodents, the scent marking behaviour was studied in animals, in which the gland was surgically removed and was compared with that of intact rodents. After recovery from the operation, the scent marking frequency of both male and female M. hurrianae declined significantly and was maintained at a low level. Surprisingly, scent marking with urine also declined considerable with time. After 5 months of the operation, desert gerbils were given a choice to respond to male and female sebum odours. The frequency of their scent marking with either sebum or urine did not show any significant enhancement as compared to their initial marking rate. However, the duration of their stay and scent marking frequency near the source of the sebum odour was more that in the clean side of the cage. The role of such altering behaviors of M. hurrianae and their impact on social organization are discussed.  相似文献

We describe patterns of scent marking observed in two wild populations of lowland woolly monkeys that were the subjects of long-term studies in the westernmost portion of the Amazon basin. The woolly monkeys engaged primarily in two types of scent marking: chest rubbing and anogenital rubbing. In both study populations, males and females performed both types of scent marking, but males chest-rubbed more commonly than females, while females engaged in more anogenital rubbing. We evaluated two nonexclusive hypotheses for the function of scent marking by woolly monkeys: 1) that scent marking is used in sociosexual contexts, and 2) that scent marking is used to convey information about occupancy of or willingness to defend an area from conspecifics in other social groups. We found no association between the occurrence of scent-marking behavior and location within the home range, but did find that scent marking occurred more commonly than expected on days when copulations, mating solicitations, and intergroup encounters were observed. Additionally, mating activity and chest rubbing were highly correlated across the yearly cycle, even when the potentially confounding variable of ripe fruit availability was controlled for. In woolly monkeys, overt male-male competition is rare and female choice is an important part of the mating system. Our results are most consistent with the idea that scent marking plays a role in advertising male quality or competitive ability, and perhaps in coordinating mating activity.  相似文献

Scent gland size and activity and frequency of marking under standard conditions were compared in five groups of male and female gerbils: (1) intact, sham-operated controls, (2) intact with scent glands excised, (3) gonadectomized, (4) gonadectomized injected with 1000 μg testosterone propionate (TP) on alternate days, and (5) gonadectomized with a low dose (25 μg) TP applied topically to the ventral scent gland on alternate days. The animals were housed in individual cages and tested for marking in an open field arena with plastic pegs. The scent gland is not required in either sex for the behavioural act of marking. Topical application of a dose of TP too low to exert a systematic effect restored the scent gland but not marking. Injection of sufficient TP to restore seminal vesicle weight restored marking, as well as the scent glands. It was concluded that in the male, both marking behaviour and scent gland size are controlled by the testes. The effect of androgens on marking is mediated directly through the central nervous system, and not through peripheral stimulation of the glands.Females have smaller glands and mark less than males. The ovaries appear to have little control over marking frequency, and some control over scent gland size. It is possible to stimulate marking behaviour to supernormal levels by TP injection, but not by topical application.  相似文献

Post-conflict (PC) affiliation has been demonstrated in a number of Old World monkeys and apes, but very little is known about the occurrence of the phenomenon in New World monkeys. This study examined 282 PC interactions after spontaneous conflicts around feeding time in two family groups (N = 12) of captive common marmosets, Callithrix jacchus jacchus. We found an overall corrected conciliatory tendency of 31%. Selective attraction was seen: former opponents met significantly more often in PCs than in matched controls (MCs) (27% and 16%, respectively). There was no difference in the occurrence of PC affiliation between dyads consisting of parent-offspring constellations compared to offspring-offspring constellations. PC affiliative behaviors were seen in the first three minutes following conflict termination, and consisted mainly of proximity, play invitations, and food transfer. Notably, former opponents remained within arm's reach after 17% of conflicts. Affiliation was more likely to follow after conflicts involving play issues. The functional importance of the PC affiliation in marmosets remains to be examined.  相似文献

The largest population of endangered golden lion tamarins (Leontopithecus rosalia, GLTs) decreased from approximately 330 to 220 individuals between 1995 and 2000 due to a dramatic increase in predation at sleeping sites. We used behavioral data from eight social groups in this population to test two hypotheses: First, if GLTs attempt to mitigate the risk of predation at sleeping sites, they should reduce their rates of scent marking just prior to retirement. Second, if the benefits of scent marking prior to entering the sleeping site merit an increase in the rate of marking, then tamarins should increase their rate of pre-retirement scent marking during the breeding season, when such behavior would have its greatest impact on reproductive fitness. We used a generalized linear model (GLM) repeated-measures analysis to compare rates of daytime scent marking with rates of marking just prior to retirement for males and females. In addition, we compared scent marking prior to retiring in the nonbreeding season to marking rates before retirement in the breeding season for males and both sexes considered concurrently. Contrary to our expectations, GLTs significantly increased their rates of scent marking during the 30 min prior to entering their sleeping site-an observation driven by an increase in male (but not female) rates of marking. Rates of marking before entering the sleeping site were greater in the nonbreeding season compared to the breeding season, when both sexes were considered concomitantly and when males were evaluated alone. We conclude that GLTs do not attempt to minimize predation risk by decreasing scent marking in the period before they enter their sleeping site, and that tamarins do not scent mark at this time of day in order to transmit information about reproductive status or to control reproduction of subordinates. We speculate that scent marking in the 30 min prior to entering sleeping sites may serve to reduce predation risk by enabling tamarin groups to return quickly to favored sleeping sites in the evening when crepuscular predators are active.  相似文献

We conducted an experiment to test three alternative hypotheses for the function of frequency of scent marking in male prairie voles, MICROTUS OCHROGASTER: (1) sexual attraction (to advertise male quality for mating); (2) reproductive competition; and (3) self-advertisement or individual identity. In laboratory experiments, males deposited scent on all areas of a bare substrate, and more in an area next to a stimulus animal than other areas, regardless of the stimulus animal's sex. Females did not choose mates based on their frequency of scent marking and scent marking did not antagonize or stimulate aggression between males. The frequency of scent marking by males supports the individual identity hypothesis, and is less consistent with the sexual attraction or reproductive competition hypotheses. Mate choice is likely based on a complex suite of characters, but at least in prairie voles, the frequency of scent marking by males does not appear to be one of them.  相似文献

The androgen dependent scent marking behavior of male Mongolian gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus) can be stimulated after castration by either testosterone or estrogen, but not by dihydrotestosterone (DHT). To determine if DHT fails to evoke scent marking because it cannot be aromatized to form an estrogen, two other nonaromatizable androgens, 1α-methyltestosterone and 6α-fluorotestosterone, were studied. 6α-Fluorotestosterone and its propionate ester stimulated scent marking in castrated male gerbils as effectively as testosterone and its ester did. Hence, an androgen's aromatizability does not determine its ability to influence gerbil scent marking behavior.  相似文献

The behavioural repertoire of four captive breeding pairs of Callithrix jacchus jacchus is described. Social communication took the form of postures, facial expressions, vocalizations and piloerection displays. Detailed analyses were made of piloerection displays, adult play, copulatory, aggressive, and prey-catching behaviour. Aggressive behaviour was uncommon in adult mated pairs. Play between adults showed a degree of temporal organization. Vocalizations were the main methods of intragroup communication whilst piloerection displays were directed towards members of other groups and also to unfamiliar objects. The behavioural repertoire of C. jacchus jacchus is compared with that of other Primates.  相似文献

Three wild groups of common marmoset, Callithrix jacchus jacchus,in north-east Brazil, of approximately similar size, had home ranges between 2.5 and 6.5 ha. But their core areas were similar in size between 1.0 and 1.5 ha, with a monthly area of heavy use between 1.1 and 1.6 ha. The groups were selective in the use of their home ranges, even though they were small: they used some areas heavily and others lightly. The core areas had higher densities of trees that produced gum exudates than did other parts of the home ranges. Our data suggest that a group of marmosets in this habitat may require a minimum of about 50 gum trees in its home range at a minimum density of about 50 trees/ha. In addition, the animals require suitable trees in which to sleep. We suggest that patches of forest with these desirable properties remain relatively fixed in size and location over the years and that individual animals are constantly in flux between them.  相似文献

Agonistic behavior was observed in five captive groups of the monogamous monkey Callithrix jacchus jacchus, which normally produces twin offspring every 5 months. Fighting is first recorded when twins are aged 5–10 months. These “twin fights” determine differences in status between combatants that can be detected 5 months later. From what is known of the social behavior of the species, it is postulated that an individual’s twin is its most serious rival and that early fighting is advantageous because injury is minimal while the animal retains its milk dentition. In contrast to twin fights, aggression between same-sex juveniles and adults does not involve long fights and probably serves to reinforce preexisting differences in status. It often results in forcing a group member to the periphery, and therefore, its main function may be to drive mature, same-sexed individuals out of the group. Apart from the relationship between twins, status within the family group is age related and not normally determined by aggression.  相似文献

The hormonal control of scent marking and related behavior and morphology was examined in female gray short-tailed opossums. Females rarely scent marked when intact or following ovariectomy. Testosterone (T) but not estradiol (E) treatment stimulated chest marking while either hormone stimulated head marking in ovariectomized females tested alone. When the same females were tested with males, T-treated females showed little scent marking of any type; E-treated females showed hip marking in significantly more tests than females in the other treatment groups. Suprasternal scent glands (absent in intact females) and phalluses of females that received T were significantly larger than those of animals that received E or control animals. These findings are discussed with respect to similarities and differences between marsupial and eutherian females and between male and female gray opossums in the hormonal control of sexually dimorphic behavior and morphology.  相似文献

Scent-marking behavior is associated with different behavioral contexts in callitrichids, including signalizing a territory, location of feeding resources, and social rank. In marmosets and tamarins it is also associated with intersexual communication. Though it appears very important for the daily routine of the individuals, very few researchers have investigated distribution through the 24-h cycle. In a preliminary report, we described a preferential incidence of this behavior 2 h before nocturnal rest in families of common marmosets. We expand the data using 8 family groups (28 subjects), 8 fathers, 6 mothers, 8 nonreproductive adults (4 sons and 4 daughters), and 6 juvenile (3 sons and 3 daughters) offspring that we kept in outdoor cages under natural environmental conditions. We recorded the frequency of anogenital scent marking for each group during the light phase, twice a wk, for 4 consecutive wks, from March 1998 to September 1999. Cosinor test detected 24- and 8-h variations in 89.3% and 85.7% of the subjects, respectively, regardless of sex or reproductive status. The 8-h component is a consequence of the 2 peaks for the behavior, at the beginning and end of the light phase. Daily distribution of scent marking is similar to that others described previously for motor activity in marmosets. The coincident rhythmical patterns for both behaviors seem to be associated with feeding behavior, as described for callitrichids in free-ranging conditions, involving an increase in foraging activities early in the morning and shortly before nocturnal rest.  相似文献

A mechanism for territorial pattern formation in wolves is analysed using a spatially explicit mathematical model which incorporates wolf movement and scent marking. Model results reflect field observations: buffer zones where wolves are scarce arise between adjacent packs and near these buffer zones there are increased levels of scent marking. It is shown how the precise behavioral response of wolves to foreign scent-marks determines the qualitative form of the spatial territories. Realistic territories in two spatial dimensions require ‘switching’ of the movement and scent marking behavior in response to foreign scent marks.
