  • 1.1. Adult male and female cockroaches (Blattella germanica) were maintained on a positive nitrogen balance diet (66% protein) containing various levels of allopurinol (0–3%) to determine the effects of allopurinol on urate synthesis and storage.
  • 2.2. Each insect was injected with [14C]hypoxanthine and after 1 week was analyzed for whole-body hypoxanthine, xanthine and urate radiolabel.
  • 3.3. There was a general trend of decreased whole-body radiolabel retention, radiolabeled body urates and total-body urate content in both sexes with increasing amounts of dietary allopurinol.
  • 4.4. Virgin female adults were allowed to feed on diets containing 0, 25 and 66% protein plus 0.1% allopurinol and were injected with [14C]xanthine.
  • 5.5. After 1 week radiolabel content in the whole-body xanthine and urate pools was determined.
  • 6.6. Females on the 0% protein diets contained less radiolabel in the whole-body and body urates than those on either 25 or 66% protein diets.

  • 1.1. Eggs of wild cod, and of farmed cod fed (a) a diet supplemented with astaxanthin and (b) a diet supplemented with both astaxanthin and canthaxanthin, were analysed with respect to carotenoids.
  • 2.2. The total carotenoid contents in eggs were 0.7 ppm for wild cod and 0.5 ppm for farmed cod.
  • 3.3. Cod, having white flesh, deposit ketocarotenoids in the eggs, preferably astaxanthin.
  • 4.4. Canthaxanthin can replace astaxanthin in the eggs, but astaxanthin appears to be deposited preferentially when both carotenoids are present in the diet.
  • 5.5. The isomer distribution of (3S, 3′S):(3R, 3′S, meso):(3R, 3′R) astaxanthin in the eggs reflected the isomer composition of the diet.
  • 6.6. Echinenone, 4′-hydroxyechinenone, adonixanthin and zeaxanthin encountered in cod eggs may represent reductive metabolites of canthaxanthin and astaxanthin.

  • 1.1. Nicotine at 10 mM, but not caffeine or theophylline, reduced by 20% the overshoot of the Na+-dependent d-glucose transport in ratjejunal brush border membrane vesicles.
  • 2.2. Since nicotine did not affect the transport of Na+, its inhibition on Na+-dependent d-glucose transport must be due to a direct effect upon the d-glucose transport system.
  • 3.3. Folate transport in these membrane vesicles was found to a be a free diffusion process at pH 7.4.
  • 4.4. Neither caffeine, theophylline nor nicotine has any effect on folate transport.

  • 1.1. In most cases, when isolated adipocytes and adipose tissue slices from the same animal were stimulated with various lipolytic agents (adrenergie agonists, theophylline, adenosine deaminase), the qualitative response was similar.
  • 2.2. There were, however, numerous exceptions; e.g. quinterenol did not affect isolated adipocytes whereas it was a partial agonist for adipose slices from the same animal.
  • 3.3. The adipocytes present in slices were larger than those isolated from slices by collagenase digestion.
  • 4.4. Isolated adipocytes were not more sensitive than tissue slices to stimulation by lipolytic agents.

  • 1.1. Atlantic salmon (Satmo salar) were treated with Silastic pellet implants containing testosterone (200 μg/g body weight) four times in a year. Eggs stripped from control (sham implantation) and testosterone-treated fish were fertilized and comparisons of free and total amino acid compositions made until first feeding.
  • 2.2. Despite having eggs which were smaller in diameter, lighter in weight and lower in total amino acid contents, alevins from testosterone-treated fish were heavier in wet weight and larger in body length, and exhibited enhanced free amino acid contents at first feeding.
  • 3.3. The qualitative composition of total amino acids in eggs from treated and control fish did not differ.
  • 4.4. Total amino acid pool of eggs and alevins declined during development, but an increase in the free amino acid pool was noticed through development. The increase in free amino acid pool was higher in eggs and alevins from treated fish than controls, perhaps due to enhanced mobilization of the free amino acid pool.

  • 1.1. Hemolymph ornithine concentrations in tobacco horn worm larvae fed a 2.5 mM l-canavanine plus 25 mM l-arginine-supplemented artificial diet (CAAM) were higher than those in larvae fed diets supplemented with 2.5 mM canavanine (CAV), 25 mM arginine (ARG), or controls (CON).
  • 2.2. Ornithine concentrations in CAV-treated larvae were significantly greater than the control or ARG treatment, but less than the CAAM treatment during the latter part of the wandering larval stage and during the pharate pupal stage.
  • 3.3. Urea concentrations were greater during the active feeding stage with the CAAM- and ARG-treated larvae having significantly higher levels than control or CAV-treated larvae.
  • 4.4. Urea concentrations in all treatments never exceeded 36.5% of the ornithine concentration.
  • 5.5. Canavanine concentrations were higher in CAV-treated larvae than in CAAM-treated larvae.
  • 6.6. During active feeding, arginine concentrations for all treatments were similar, but were lower in CAV- and CAAM-treated larvae during the pharate pupal stage.

  • 1.1. Crossbred Yorkshire (Yorkshire × Landrace) pigs were fed butter oil, cream, low erucic acid rapeseed oil, sunflower oil and partially hydrogenated sunflower oil in amounts representing 30% of energy for periods of up to 13 weeks.
  • 2.2. After 13 wk of feeding serum total cholesterol levels of pigs fed milk fat were significantly higher than of pigs fed vegetable oils.
  • 3.3. The difference in cholesterol was mainly due to an increase in the density range of 1.063–1.125 g/ml containing pig LDL2 and some HDL.
  • 4.4. A shift towards smaller LDL particle size was apparent in pigs fed milk fat.
  • 5.5. The effects of dietary trans fatty acids did not differ from cis polyunsaturated or monounsaturated fatty acids.

  • 1.1. Growing male kittens were fed an 18% casein diet supplemented with 2, 3, or 4% l-methionine (MET) for 6 weeks.
  • 2.2. Free MET concentration in liver increased 30-fold and cystathionine two- to three-fold; the activity of adenosyl-MET transferase and cystathionase also increased but remained lower than previously found in rats.
  • 3.3. Taurine concentration in liver decreased in cats fed excess MET and appeared to depend on taurine intake.
  • 4.4. Alanine aminotransferase activity was high in all groups while serine dehydratase activity was very low.
  • 5.5. Pyruvate kinase and malic enzyme activities which are normally low in cat liver increased after excess MET. Also, glucose 6-phosphate and 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenases increased.
  • 6.6. Cat liver metabolism showed limited adaptation to an excess dietary intake of methionine compared to that found in rats.

  • 1.1. The nonfaecal nitrogenous excretion rate in starved sterlet fingerlings and fingerlings fed on different rations was investigated. The weight of the fish and temperature of the water was 43 g and 17.5°C, respectively.
  • 2.2. In the nonfaecal excrements of starved sterlets the ammonia: urea ratio was substantially lower than in teleosts. This ratio was found to be 1.4:1.
  • 3.3. In fed sterlets the urea excretion rate was higher than in starved ones but independent of ration size.
  • 4.4. During the day the urea excretion rate in sterlets was constant.
  • 5.5. The ammonia excretion rate accelerated 2 hr after feeding and reached its peak duration 6–11 hr after depending on the ration size.
  • 6.6. Total ammonia output in the sterlet increased following the increase of ration size up to 8.4% of body wt. Further increases in ration size did not cause the corresponding elevation of ammonia excretion rate.

  • 1.1. Methionine and total sulfur amino acid (TSAA) requirements of rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) were investigated by feeding graded isosulfurous levels of l- and dl-methionine, l-cystine, and the free acid and calcium forms of methionine hydroxy analog (MHA).
  • 2.2. Added cystine did not promote growth, survival or prevent cataracts.
  • 3.3. l-methionine produced fastest growth, followed by dl-methionine, CaMHA and free acid MHA.
  • 4.4. Trout fed CaMHA gained 85.7 and 92.3% as much as those fed l-methionine and dl-methionine.
  • 5.5. Within each experiment, the level of L-methionine isomer that prevented cataracts was constant (1.86 g/100g protein in experiment (1), 1.45 in experiment (2) and was lower than for maximum growth (2.89 and 2.15 g) regardless of methionine source.

  • 1.1. The carotenoids in the muscles and eggs from two types of natural Alaskan dolly varden charr, anadromous and river resident types, were examined.
  • 2.2. In the muscle from the anadromous charr, astaxanthin was the major component comprising more than 70% of the total, followed by idoxanthin and 4-keto-zeaxanthin.
  • 3.3. The egg carotenoid features in the river resident charr were more complicated compared with those in the anadromous fish. A considerable proportion of unidentified carotenoids was found in the eggs from the river resident charr.
  • 4.4. Idoxanthin was the main component along with considerable propotions of β-carotene tetrol and astaxanthin in the eggs from the anadromous charr, whereas zeaxanthin and lutein were detected besides idoxanthin and β-carotene tetrol in the eggs from the river resident fish.
  • 5.5. The prey was considered to be responsible for the difference in the carotenoid features of the eggs from the anadromous and river resident charr.

  • 1.1. Responses of channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) swim-up fry to dietary calcium in soft (< 1 mg/1 as CaCO3) and hard (> 100 mg/1 as CaCO3) water were determined by feeding purified egg-white diets containing 0, 0.5, 1.0, or 2.0% calcium from CaCO3 for 8 weeks.
  • 2.2. Catfish fry fed the basal diet (0.03% Ca) in hard and soft water had lower whole-body ash and whole-body calcium concentrations but higher weight gain and survival than those fed calcium-supplemented diets.
  • 3.3. Fry in soft water generally had lower whole-body ash, whole-body calcium, and survival, as well as a higher incidence of spinal deformities than fry in hard water.
  • 4.4. Feeding higher levels of calcium to fry reared in soft water did not increase whole-body calcium levels or decrease spinal deformities to the levels observed for fry reared in hard water and fed supplemental calcium.
  • 5.5. These data indicate that calcium derived solely from dietary or environmental sources was not sufficient for optimum health of channel catfish fry.

  • 1.1. Serum retinol and total cholesterol concentrations were determined in several species of nonhuman primates fed semipurified diets. Two species of Old World and three species of New World nonhuman primates were examined.

  • 1.1. Fractionation of the porphyrins extracted from the livers of fasting pigs shows a coproporphyrin to protoporphyrin ratio greater than unity, whereas the livers from normally fed pigs give a ratio less than unity.
  • 2.2. Similar results are obtained when the liver porphyrins from guinea-pigs fed on protein deficient diet are compared with those from normally fed animals.
  • 3.3. It is suggested that fasting causes a decrease in the ability of the liver to convert coproporphyrin to protoporphyrin, that is, inhibition of the enzyme coproporphyrinogen oxidase.

  • 1.1. Developing eggs of whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus L.) and vendace (Coregonus albula L.) were kept at 1–2°C and some eggs taken gradually up to 8°C to provoke mass hatching of embryos.
  • 2.2. Wet weight, dry matter and the contents of lipid, protein and ash were measured in fish during the course of experiment.
  • 3.3. Dry matter content decreased gradually in whitefish eggs from 15.64 to 11.95% during 1 month at 1–2°C, whereas vendace eggs showed only a slight decrease from 16.27 to 15.53%.
  • 4.4. In both species protein content decreased but lipid increased when approaching the natural time of hatching.
  • 5.5. During delayed hatching at low water temperatures protein contributes to catabolism, whereas lipid content decreased only in the later phase of the experiment.
  • 6.6. Larvae starved for 10 days after hatching lost increasing amounts of dry matter (from 26.1 to 50.3% of body weight) and protein (from 18.7 to 45.9% of body weight) as they remained longer in cold water as embryos.
  • 7.7. A correspondence was found between assessment of metabolic utilization of body stores based on chemical analysis of fish body and previous work on oxygen consumption and nitrogen excretion.
