Aquatic habitats are vulnerable to the invasion of alien species, so early warning protocols are necessary for eradication. The presence in Italy of two alien duckweeds in freshwaters has been documented: Lemna minuta, that showed high invasivity, and L. valdiviana, still confined to south Lazio. These two species may be mistaken for each other and for the domestic L. minor and L. gibba due to morphological variation. Here, we assess the applicability of DNA barcoding as a complement to morphological analysis for monitoring the spread of alien Lemna. We chose two chloroplast genome sequences for their ability to discriminate all Lemna species: the 5’ intron of the trnK gene and the matK gene. Among 48 samples of Lemna collected at 20 sites in Central Italy, 20 were identified as L. minor, 19 as L. minuta, five as L. trisulca and four as L. gibba. L. minuta was present at most sampling sites; in particular, at six locations of Lake Trasimeno, eight L. minuta samples were found. We demonstrate that DNA sequence analyses with cost-effective barcoding techniques can effectively support expert efforts in species determination for an early alert system of invasive Lemna species.  相似文献

1. Each year since 1983, H3PO4 has been added continuously during the ice-free season to a P-limited tundra river (Kuparuk River, North Slope, Alaska). Effects on epilithic metabolism, invertebrate community structure and fish production developed quickly. 2. In 1990, 7 years after fertilization began, we noted extensive coverage by bryophytes within the fertilized reach of the river, where very little had been noted before. Bryophyte biomass from a limited set of quadrats taken in 1990 and 1991 yielded 17 ± 9 (SE) g dry mass m?2 in control reaches and 322 ± 96 g dry mass m?2 in fertilized reaches. 3. An initial survey of macroalgal and bryophyte cover in 1991 suggested that the moss Schistidium (Grimmia) agassizii was distributed in both control and fertilized reaches of the river. No clear difference in coverage by this species was found in either reach. 4. In contrast, two species of Hygrohypnum (H. alpestre and H. ochraceum) were found almost exclusively in the fertilized reach. An extensive point transect survey done in 1992, above, within and below the fertilized reach, indicated that increased cover and biomass of Hygrohypnum spp. were confined to the fertilized reach of the river. Detrended correspondence analysis clearly separated the macrophyte and macroalgal communities in the fertilized reach from those in the control and downstream reaches. 5. A fourth bryophyte species (Fontinalis neomexicana) also occurred almost exclusively in the fertilized reach, but was much less abundant than the Hygrohypnum species. 6. Analysis of total N and P in the tissues of the Hygrohypnum spp., and estimates of average coverage (~15%) and biomass (~150g dry weight m?2) over an 8km fertilized reach, suggest that these species alone may have removed two-thirds of the P added in the fertilizer experiment. The bryophyte community in this river is likely to be the dominant sink for P in the fertilized reach.  相似文献

GABA (4-aminobutyric acid) is a ubiquitousnon-protein amino acid that accumulates rapidly inplants in response to stress. GABA was firstidentified in plants (potato tubers) and animals(brain tissue) 50 years ago. Although GABA is nowrecognized as the most important inhibitoryneurotransmitter in the mammalian central nervoussystem (CNS), the role of GABA in plants remainsunclear. Studies were performed using Lemna toinvestigate the possibility that GABA elicits aresponse in plants that may be related to that of asignaling molecule as described for GABA effects onthe CNS. Lemna growth was increased 2 to 3-foldby 5 mM GABA, but growth was strongly inhibited by 0.5mM of the isomers 3-aminobutyric acid and2-aminobutyric acid. Growth promotion by GABA wasrapidly terminated by addition of 2-aminobutyric acidto the culture medium, but inhibitory effects of2-aminobutyric acid were not reversed by GABAregardless of amounts added. Promotion of Lemnagrowth by GABA was associated with an increase inmineral content of treated plants in a dose dependentmanner. Results support the hypothesis that GABAactivity in plants involves an effect on ion transportand an interaction with a receptor. Evidence for GABAreceptors in Lemna was obtained from experimentswith pharmacological agents that have been used toidentify GABA receptors in animals. GABA mediatedpromotion of Lemna growth was inhibited bybicuculline and picrotoxin, which are respectivelycompetitive and non-competitive antagonists of GABAreceptors in the CNS. Growth inhibition bybicuculline was not relieved by increasing the amountsof GABA in the medium, indicating that the alkaloid isnot acting, as in the CNS, by competitive antagonismof GABA at GABA receptor sites. Baclofen, a GABAagonist that promotes GABA activity in animalssignificantly increased GABA mediated promotion ofLemna growth. These findings and the knownaction of GABA in regulating ion channels in animalssuggests a way that GABA could amplify the stressresponse in plants.  相似文献

During the last century, canalization of the Rhine river led to disconnection of side‐arms, over‐sedimentation of these channels, loss of the fluvial dynamics, and aquatic vegetation change or disappearance. Recent restoration projects aim to reconnect disconnected arms to the main channel. The objective of this study was to assess the nutrient dynamics in restored channels during the vegetation colonization process. In spring, summer, and autumn 2009, the phosphorus and nitrogen contents were measured in water, sediment, and plants, sampled in six channels, two reference sites and four restored ones at different dates. Aquatic vegetation was monitored during the same period. Sites were mesotrophic related to the water nutrient concentrations. However, vegetation communities indicated a eutrophic level, as they were dominated by species like Elodea nuttallii, Myriophyllum spicatum, and Potamogeton perfoliatus. Sites were discriminated by P content and mineral nitrogen in the sediment. We showed an effect of species and season on the plant nutrient content, but there was no relationship between plant nutrient content and nutrients in water and sediment. A negative correlation between mean N plant content and the cover of each species was found. Vegetation characteristics (species richness and cover) and bioavailable phosphorus in the sediment were also correlated. In the restored side‐arms of the river Rhine, phosphorus‐rich sediment seems to be important in the recolonization dynamics, as it was linked to higher species richness, whereas nitrogen played a role in the colonization patterns as a growth limiting factor.  相似文献

1. We investigated the diversity and distribution of freshwater mussels at 40 sites in an agricultural catchment, the River Raisin in south‐eastern Michigan, to relate mussel assemblages and individual taxa to reach and catchment‐scale variables. Unionids were surveyed by timed searches in 100‐m reaches, and in‐stream and riparian habitat were quantified as well as flow, water chemistry and channel morphology. Land use/cover and surficial geology were determined for site subcatchments and riparian buffers. 2. Some 21 mussel species were found overall; richness ranged from 0 to 12 living species per site. From the upper to middle to lower catchment, the number of individuals, number of species, Shannon–Weaver diversity and relative abundance of intolerant unionids all declined significantly. 3. Four groupings based on overall mussel diversity and abundance were significantly related to reach‐scale habitat variables. The richest mussel assemblages were associated with sites with higher overall habitat quality, greater flow stability, less fine substratum, and lower specific conductance. 4. Stepwise multiple regressions revealed that the distribution and abundance of the total mussel assemblage, as well as the most common species, could be predicted from a combination of reach‐ and catchment‐scale variables (R2 = 0.63 for total mussels, R2 = 0.51–0.86 for individual species). 5. Flow stability, substratum composition and overall reach habitat quality were the most commonly identified reach‐scale variables, and measures of surficial geology were the most effective catchment‐scale variables. The spatial pattern of geology is likely to be responsible for the diversity gradient from the upper to the lower catchment. 6. Prior studies, attempting to explain mussel distributions from local habitat features alone, have found relatively weak relationships. By employing a combination of reach‐ and catchment‐scale habitat variables, this study was able to account for a substantial amount of the spatial variability in mussel distributions.  相似文献

Biological and physico-chemical factors affecting abundance and biomass of shrimp Palaemon peringueyi were investigated in 2010–2011 in the lower, middle and upper reaches of the freshwater-deprived permanently open Kariega Estuary. Shrimp abundance and biomass ranged from 0 to 88 ind. m?2 and 0 to 4.4 g wwt m?2, respectively. Shrimps were most abundant in the lower reach, and highest abundances and biomasses were recorded in the lower reach in June when salinities were low. The shrimps were almost always absent in the upper reach. Juveniles were found mostly in the lower and middle reaches, whereas adults were distributed in all three reaches. Regression analyses showed no statistically significant relationship for either abundance or biomass of the shrimps with temperature, salinity and dissolved oxygen (p > 0.05). The relationship between shrimp abundance and biomass and vegetation cover was positive and statistically significant (R2 = 0.109 and 0.185, respectively; p < 0.05). Vegetation cover plays an important role in determining the presence, distribution and abundance or biomass of P. peringueyi in this estuary.  相似文献

Effects of substrate and shading on the growth of two submerged macrophytes   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Excessive nutrient loading may cause a shift from submerged macrophyte dominance to free-floating macrophyte dominance. Tolerance and persistence of submerged plants in response to shade may be key characteristics in determining when/if such a shift occurs in shallow eutrophic lakes. This study examines how the cover of floating macrophyte (Lemna minor) and shade of dark mesh affect the growth and photosynthetic efficiency of two submerged plants (Vallisneria natans and Myriophyllum spicatum) on different nutrient substrates. We found that low- and mid-cover intensities generally enhanced the leaf/shoot growth of both submerged plants under all cover and substrate types. The relative growth rates (RGR) were slightly enhanced under the treatment of Lemna with low- and mid-intensity cover on both nutrient-rich substrates. The leaf/shoot growth and RGR of both submerged macrophytes generally increased more under Lemna cover than mesh cover. The photosynthetic efficiency (F v/F m value) typically increased with the duration of treatment and the cover densities. In addition, these two macrophytes with contrasting growth forms have markedly different growth and survival strategies in response to covers. These results strengthen the hypothesis that submerged plants can successfully develop under a low-intensity cover of floating vegetation on nutrient-rich substrate.  相似文献

Three species of aquatic plants were analyzed for their ash, organic carbon and nitrogen content both fresh and after decomposition using the mesh bag method Chara contraria A. Br. ex Kütz in a small freshwater pond and Lemna minor L. in a shallow swamp were examined over a 70 day period of in situ decomposition. Fucus vesiculosus L. was examined over a 63 day period of decomposition in a rocky shore and a salt marsh environment.During decomposition Chara showed a decrease in carbon and an increase in nitrogen content while Lemna increased in carbon and decreased in nitrogen, all on an ash-free dry weight basis. Although the C : N ratio of Chara was high initially and that of Lemna relatively low, after decomposition the C : N ratio for the remains of the two plants was nearly the same. Fucus decomposing in the salt marsh showed no significant change in carbon but increased in nitrogen content while that at the rocky shore decreased in carbon and increased in nitrogen content. Much of the loss in total dry weight in the first few hours of submergence could be attributed to solubilization of ash and of some high C : N ratio organic material. Consistent and significant differences in the C : N ratio of decomposing Fucus at the two marine sites may be attributable to the nature of the decomposer organisms that inhabit these environments. The accumulation of a high proportion of autotrophic microbial biomass (such as purple sulfur bacteria) in the structural carbohydrates of the salt marsh Fucus may have caused these differences. This study suggests that initial differences in nutritional value of aquatic macrophytes diminish during decomposition and that the ultimate C : N ratio attained may be more dependent on the nature of the decomposer organisms present than on the nature of the organic material undergoing decomposition.  相似文献

Although higher plants represent a significant portion of the total biomass in some aquatic environments, their use in ecosystem evaluation has lagged behind that of other organisms. This is partly due to a lack of convenient aquatic higher plant systems that can be employed for ecotoxicological assessment. However, the aquatic C-3 monocot Lemna gibba has many attributes that makes it useful for ecosystem health assessment. In this report, using examples from the literature and our research, some of the applications Lemna has for environmental research are discussed. Toxicant impacts on Lemna can be readily assessed in terms of growth; the plants multiply quickly and changes in biomass (which doubles approximately every 2 days) can be accurately measured by counting leaves. The plants are small, allowing for simultaneous multiple replication. The small size also makes the lighting conditions easy to control; sunlight can be accurately simulated and specific spectral regions can be enhanced or deleted. Lemna is amenable to in vitro chlorophyll and photosynthesis assays, which make excellent companion endpoints for growth. The plants assimilate chemicals directly from the growth medium, facilitating controlled toxicant application. Furthermore, Lemna has a high bioconcentration capacity, indicating a potential for use in bioremediation technologies.  相似文献

Anaerobic conditions developing under ice cover affect winter survival and spring regrowth of economically important perennial crops. Our objective was to assess interspecific differences in the resistance to anaerobic conditions at low temperature, and to relate those differences to plant metabolism. Four perennial forage species, alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), red clover (Trifolium pratense L.), timothy (Phleum pratense L.) and orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata L.), were subjected to a progressively developing anoxic stress by enclosing potted plants in gas‐tight bags in late autumn and exposing them to simulated winter conditions in an unheated greenhouse. Near‐anaerobic conditions were reached after 60 d of enclosure for orchardgrass, alfalfa and red clover, and after 80 d for timothy. The sensitivity of the species to anaerobic conditions, based on plant regrowth, was: red clover and orchardgrass > alfalfa > timothy. The concentration of ethanol increased in response to oxygen deprivation, and reached the highest value in the sensitive red clover, whereas its concentration was the lowest in timothy. The expression of the alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) gene was markedly lower in timothy than in the other three species for which the expression was equivalent. We conclude that the greater resistance of timothy to anaerobic conditions at low temperature is associated with a slower glycolytic metabolism.  相似文献

This study aimed to evaluate environmental influences on fish distribution and to assess the extent to which concepts in river ecology accommodate levels of spatio-temporal heterogeneity of fish assemblages in a 1,080-km long tropical river. A total of 25 sites were sampled between November 2002 and March 2003 in two seasons (summer/wet versus winter/dry). A thermal gradient separating the upper reaches from the lower reaches was detected. The middle-upper reaches showed higher conductivity and lower dissolved oxygen and pH levels compared with the other reaches. Although some significant associations were found between some fish abundance and environmental variables, the most abundant species (Tilapia rendalli, Geophagus brasiliensis, and Oligosarcus hepsetus) occurred in most sites and under most environmental conditions. Fish community structure varied more in space (longitudinal) than through time (seasonal). The community in the lower reach species was more diverse in comparison with the other reaches. Differences in the fish assemblage structure among the longitudinal river sections appear to have been influenced by the effects of damming, and seem to be partially consistent with the Serial Discontinuity Concept, which views dams as discontinuities within the river continuum. Only the lower river reach showed seasonal differences in the fish community structure, attributable to the influence of flooding. Management plans and biodiversity conservation will benefit by considering the effects of dam disruption and flood increased connectivity to the lotic systems. Handling editor: J. Trexler  相似文献

Most works concerning growth and reproduction of Mediterranean sponges have been performed in the oligotrophic western Mediterranean while little is known about sponge dynamics in the North-western Adriatic Sea, a basin characterized by low winter temperature and eutrophy. In order to deepen our understanding of sponges in the North Adriatic Sea and verify how its peculiar trophic and physical conditions affect sponge life cycles, temporal trend of sponge cover (%) and reproductive timing of Chondrosia reniformis and Tedania (Tedania) anhelans were studied over a 1-year period looking for a possible relation with variations of temperature or food availability. In C. reniformis, although little variations of sponge cover were evidenced around the year, the number of individuals and their size increase during spring. Asexual reproduction, via drop-like propagules, mainly occurs in spring and summer, while sexual reproduction is characterized by a maximum number of oocytes in August. T. anhelans progressively grows from spring to summer and develops propagules on its surface that reach their maximum size in July. In autumn, the sponge undergoes a process of progressive shrinkage and almost disappears in winter when temperature reaches 7–8°C. Larvae occur during summer. In the North Adriatic Sea sponges have larger sizes, higher density and a wider period of oocytes production compared with the same species from the Mediterranean Sea, suggesting these differences could be due to high food availability characterizing the eutrophic Adriatic basin. On the contrary, the sharp water temperature variations and the very low winter temperature, 5–6°C lower than what has been reported for the Mediterranean Sea, regulate temporal variations in abundance and cause the disappearance of thermophile species during winter.  相似文献

1. The asymmetric competition for light and nutrients between floating and submerged aquatic plants is thought to be key in explaining why dominance by either of these groups can be stable and difficult to change. 2. Although the shading effect of floating plants on submerged plants has been well documented, the impact of submerged plants on floating plants has been poorly explored hitherto. 3. Here, we used laboratory experiments to examine how submerged plant (Elodea nuttallii) alter nutrient conditions in the water column and how this affects the growth of floating plants (Lemna gibba). 4. We demonstrate that, at higher nutrient concentrations, Lemna is increasingly likely to outcompete Elodea. 5. Under low nutrient concentrations (0.1–2 mg N L?1) Elodea can strongly reduce the growth of Lemna. Growth of floating plants virtually stopped in some of the experiments with Elodea. 6. Extremely reduced tissue N, Mn, chlorophyll and elongated roots indicated that the growth inhibition of Lemna by Elodea was predominantly caused by the latter’s impact on the nutrient conditions for floating plants. 7. These results strengthen the hypothesis that submerged plants can prevent colonization of a lake by floating plants.  相似文献

Transplant experiments are a useful tool both for determining species’ ranges and understanding their cause, yet such experiments have seldom been performed in areas where plants reach extremely high elevations. We examined the position of the upper elevational limits of vascular plants in E Ladakh, India, by transplanting individuals of 14 subnival species from 5800–5850 m elevation to a control site at the same elevation, as well as to edaphically suitable sites at 5960 m (subnival belt with sparse plant cover), to 6030 m (the highest elevation reached by vascular plants in the area) and to 6160 m elevation (no vascular plants observed). Two years later, transplants of 13 species survived at the control elevation, whereas 5 species survived at 5960 m, 2 species (Waldheimia tridactylites, Poa attenuata) at 6030 m, and none at 6160 m. The highest elevation at which transplanted flowering plants survived corresponds well to the observed elevational limit. Soil temperature data at the sites suggest that the growing season, defined as the period with mean daily soil temperature above zero, lasted nearly 3 months at 5960 m, ca 1.5 month at 6030 m, but <3 weeks at 6160 m, moreover interrupted at the highest elevation by several days with temperatures remaining below zero. The experiment confirmed the observed sharp limit of vegetation, set not by any physical barrier per se (e.g. not by the top of the massif), but instead by physiological constraints of the species. The result provides support for the assumptions of mid‐domain effect models that domain limits are defined by shared organismal adaptations in relation to environmental gradients, in this case tolerance to freezing temperature.  相似文献

1. Coastal rivers can have long tidally influenced reaches that are affected by tides but do not contain saline water. These tidal freshwater reaches have steep geomorphic gradients where the river transitions from narrow, heavily shaded streams to wide, unshaded channels. The influence of these gradients on river ecosystem production is poorly understood. 2. We characterised gradients in irradiance, geomorphology, water clarity and chlorophyll a along 9‐ to 16‐km tidal freshwater reaches of the Newport and White Oak Rivers in North Carolina, USA, and examined the effect of nutrient enrichment on phytoplankton growth in the Newport River. Underwater irradiance was modelled at 2–4 week intervals along both rivers using measurements of the above‐canopy irradiance, canopy cover, water column light attenuation (Kd) and water depth. Suspended material (TSS), dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and chlorophyll a were sampled at 2‐week interval at five sites on the Newport River and on four dates at four sites on the White Oak River over the course of one year. 3. Phytoplankton nutrient limitation was assessed at three locations along the tidal gradient. River water was collected during March, April, June and October, and incubated in 10‐L plastic outdoor containers under ambient water temperature and sunlight. Additions of inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus served as treatments; growth rate during the 4 days of incubation was calculated from the change in chlorophyll a concentration over time. 4. Canopy cover decreased from more than 90% to <10% over the length of both tidal freshwater rivers. Water column irradiance and phytoplankton biomass increased as tree canopy cover decreased and channel width increased. Channel width exceeded predictions for non‐tidal rivers by threefold because of tidal influence. TSS and DOC decreased significantly along the length of the Newport River, but no significant gradients were observed in the White Oak River. Kd did not vary along the tidal gradient of either river. 5. Mesocosm experiments indicated that inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus enhanced the growth of phytoplankton advected from the non‐tidal river into the tidal freshwater river during spring and summer. Phytoplankton in the tidal freshwater reach were generally not nutrient limited. 6. Tidal hydrology (in the absence of saltwater) directly affected the morphology of the channel and indirectly affected biological growth and production. The significant increase in river width, irradiance and phytoplankton biomass distinguished these tidal freshwater ecosystems from their upstream (non‐tidal fluvial) counterparts, while the strong influence of riparian shading distinguished them from the saline estuaries downstream. Future development of ecosystem and biogeochemical models for tidal freshwater rivers will benefit from the linkages between geomorphology and biological processes identified here.  相似文献

Survivorship in Acacia suaveolens was assessed through seedling and adult stages. Moisture stress was found to be the critical factor limiting early seedling survival. Both seedling and adult populations were characterized by periods of low mortality interspersed with pulses of high mortality. A composite survivorship curve for A. suaveolens based on nine sites predicts that some 20–25 years after afire, established plants should disappear from the above-ground flora if another fire does not occur. Fecundity and survivorship data were used to estimate the flux of seed in the soil over time in a hypothetical A. suaveolens population. From this it was predicted that, following establishment of plants after a fire, the seed-bank would rapidly reach a maximum after 6 years and thereafter slowly decline, until after 60 years there would be only as many seeds as there were original parental plants. The situation would vary with predispersal seed predation, seed predation on the soil surface, seed dispersal by ants to ‘unsafe sites’ and the size of the initial seed-bank prior to establishment. Only after a very long inter-fire period would A. suaveolens be eliminated from a site. Elimination of the species is also possible under very frequent fires. A 2–5 year fire-free period is needed for plants to reach maturity and another 6 years are needed to maximize seed input into the soil seed-bank. In addition, seedling recruitment following cool burns is low to non-existent as dormancy is not broken for most seeds in the soil during such burns.  相似文献

Redhorse, Moxostoma spp., are considered to be negatively affected by dams although this assertion is untested for Canadian populations. One hundred and fifty-one sites in the Grand River watershed were sampled to identify factors influencing the distribution of redhorse species. Individual species of redhorse were captured from 3 to 32% of sites. The most widespread species were golden redhorse, M. erythrurum (30%) and greater redhorse, M. valenciennesi (32%), while river redhorse, M. carinatum, was only found along the lower Grand River. Redhorse were absent from the highly fragmented Speed River sub-watershed and upper reaches of the Conestogo River and the Grand River. Redhorse species richness was positively correlated to river fragment size and upstream drainage area. Generalized additive models (GAMs) were applied to evaluate the influence of river fragment length, connectivity and habitat on species distribution. Principal component analysis reduced habitat data to three axes representing: channel structure, substrate, and pool, riffle and run habitats (PC1); gradient and drainage area (PC2); and cover (PC3). GAMs indicate that PC2 was important for predicting black redhorse and greater redhorse site occupancy and PC1 was important for golden redhorse. River fragment length was important for predicting site occupancy for shorthead redhorse, but not other species.  相似文献

Dispersal of plant fragments in small streams   总被引:7,自引:1,他引:6
1. Streams are subject to frequent natural and anthropogenic disturbances that cause sediment erosion and loss of submerged vegetation. This loss makes downstream transport and retention of vegetative propagules on the streambed very important for re‐establishing vegetation cover. We measured dispersal and retention of macrophyte stem fragments (15–20 cm long) along 300 m long reaches of four small to medium sized Danish lowland streams. 2. The number of drifting stem fragments declined exponentially with distance below the point of release. This finding makes the retention coefficient (k, m−1) in the exponential equation a suitable measure for comparisons among different macrophyte species, and between stream reaches of different hydrology and vegetation cover. 3. Buoyancy of macrophyte tissue influenced retention. Elodea canadensis stems drifted below the water surface, and were more inclined to be retained in deeper water associated with submerged plants and obstacles in the streambed. Ranunculus peltatus stems were more buoyant, drifted at the water surface, and were more inclined to be trapped in shallow water and in riparian vegetation. 4. The retention coefficient of drifting stems increased with the relative contact between the flowing water and streambed, bank and vegetation. Thus, the retention coefficients were highest (0.02–0.12 m−1) in shallow reaches with a narrow, vegetation‐free flow channel. Here there were no significant differences between E. canadensis and R. peltatus. Retention coefficients were lowest (0.0005–0.0135 m−1) in deeper reaches with wider vegetation‐free flow channels. Retention of E. canadensis was up to 16 times more likely than retention of R. peltatus. 5. Overall, the longitudinal position in the stream system of source populations of species capable of producing numerous stems, the species‐specific retention coefficients of stems, and the retention capacity of stream reaches should be important for species distribution in perturbed stream systems. Retention of stems is probably constrained in headwaters by the small downstream flux of stem fragments because of the restricted source area, and constrained in downstream reaches by small retention coefficients. Macrophyte retention may, consequently, peak in medium‐sized streams.  相似文献

Environmental parameters and ichthyofauna were investigated over a 2 years period in three regions along the 200 km length of Cross River. The objective of the study was to quantify the relative importance of local environmental conditions prevailing within sampling sites and the composition and abundance of the principal fish species in the upper, middle and lower reaches of the river. Vegetation cover, size of river, flow velocity, water level, temperature, transparency, and food availability explained the observed seasonal and spatial changes in fish abundance. Forty-six species and 28 genera of fish belonging to 16 families were recorded among the 14,466 fish caught. Three fish families (Cichlidae, Bagridae, and Clariidae) yielded highest number (41.3%) of species while Denticeptidae, Protopteridae, and Osteoglossidae had the least. Oreochromis niloticus, Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus, and Clarias anguillaris numerically dominated (46.4%) catch composition. Species richness was higher for the river stretch in forest area than in savanna, and it was correlated significantly with width of the reach, water transparency, depth, and flow velocity (P < 0.001) of the river. Wet season samples were more diverse (>0.6) and had higher richness (>9.7) than those for dry season. Wet season and forest regions were therefore critical in maintaining fish stock of Cross River.  相似文献

Question: Can wild ungulates efficiently maintain and restore open habitats? Location: Brandenburg, NE Germany. Methods: The effect of wild ungulate grazing and browsing was studied in three successional stages: (1) Corynephorus canescens‐dominated grassland; (2) ruderal tall forb vegetation dominated by Tanacetum vulgare; and (3) Pinus sylvestris‐pioneer forest. The study was conducted over 3 yr. In each successional stage, six paired 4 m2‐monitoring plots of permanently grazed versus ungrazed plots were arranged in three random blocks. Removal of grazing was introduced de novo for the study. In each plot, percentage cover of each plant and lichen species and total cover of woody plants was recorded. Results: Wild ungulates considerably affected successional pathways and species composition in open habitats but this influence became evident in alteration of abundances of only a few species. Grazing effects differed considerably between successional stages: species richness was higher in grazed versus ungrazed ruderal and pioneer forest plots, but not in the Corynephorus sites. Herbivory affected woody plant cover only in the Pioneer forest sites. Although the study period was too short to observe drastic changes in species richness and woody plant cover, notable changes in species composition were still detected in all successional stages. Conclusion: Wild ungulate browsing is a useful tool to inhibit encroachment of woody vegetation and to conserve a species‐rich, open landscape.  相似文献
