A part from considerations as to where it is best wedged into the linear sequence, the brachyptera group is defined in general terms as a compact group of four small or very small species which resemble one another in many important specific characters and the other thirty-six species classified here as Cisticola in so many ways of form, coloration and behaviour as to make them best understood by classifying them also under that generic name.

T he two giants of the genus-that is so far as the cock birds are concerned, but, as with chiniana and a few others, their hens are so much smaller that even when in the field the two sexes are seen in company one may often doubt their being a pair of the same species.

The B. O. C. Ruwenzori expedition of 1906 brought home a single immature female of this species, obtained in a papyrus swamp near Lake George, and to Ogilvie-Grant's discrimination we owe the recognition of its specific distinction from galactotes , the species it so closely resembles in coloration, and which is certainly carruthersi s nearest ally.     

Q. & A. on C. P. S

Encephalitis is a challenging public health problem in Kern County and in the San Joaquin Valley area. During the last ten years the authors have studied the epidemiology of encephalitides due to arthropod-borne viruses and the methods used in the differential dignosis of these conditions. To incriminate a virus it is necessary to demonstrate a rise in antibody titer in the blood over a period of seven to fourteen days, the first specimen to be taken as soon as possible after onset of symptoms. A variety of tests may be necessary in some cases. Among the patients included in this presentation the greater number of those with encephalitis and also of those with poliomyelitis were under 30 years of age. The age range was five weeks to 49 years. The median annual mortality rate was 4.3 deaths per 100 cases for poliomyelitis and 3.9 for encephalitis. The greatest incidence occurred during the summer months.The clinical manifestations usually observed in encephalitis are described, but it is emphasized that wide variations and even completely atypical clinical phenomena are encountered. Four representative cases are reported and treatment is discussed. Vaccination and vector control are considered as the most promising means of combating the disease.     

Paramphisphaeria costaricensis gen. et sp. nov. and Pachytrype rimosa sp. nov. from Costa Rica

Paramphisphaeria is described as a new genus on the basis of the single species, P. costaricensis. It differs from Amphisphaeria spp. primarily in having bicellular ascospores with a germ slit and in having an ascus apical ring that does not become blue in iodine. It resembles Amphisphaeria in its brown color and lack of constriction at the septum of the ascospore. An anamorph is unknown. It tentatively is placed in the Xylariaceae for reasons discussed. Pachytrype rimosa is described as a new species.

The use of liquid nitrogen for the removal of warts has advantages over electrocautery in certain circumstances. Although the incidence of recurrences after liquid nitrogen is higher than after cautery, it causes considerably less scarring. It is most useful in dealing with peri-ungual and multiple warts. The technique is simple and a supply of liquid nitrogen can be kept on hand in the office at relatively low cost.     

Cyanide inhibition of cytochrome c oxidase. A rapid-freeze e.p.r. investigation.

The inhibition of cytochrome c oxidase by cyanide, starting either with the resting or the pulsed enzyme, was studied by rapid-freeze quenching followed by quantitative e.p.r. It is found that a partial reduction of cytochrome oxidase by transfer of 2 electron equivalents from ferrocytochrome c to cytochrome a and CuA will induce a transition from a closed to an open enzyme conformation, rendering the cytochrome a3-CuB site accessible for cyanide binding, possibly as a bridging ligand. A heterogeneity in the enzyme is observed in that an e.p.r. signal from the cytochrome a3 3+-HCN complex is only found in 20% of the molecules, whereas the remaining cyanide-bound a3-CuB sites are e.p.r.-silent.     

Andropause ou P.A.D.A.M.

Recently the word P.A.D.A.M. has been proposed to replace the term Andropause (Partiel Andrologen Deficiency in Aging Males). This implies that most if not all problems of the aging male are due to testosterone déficiency, which is not at all true when one considers the results of endocrine investigations in that group. So many other sociological and relational causes are involved that the term P.A.D.A.M. is clearly a misnomer.

Thermodynamics of cell adhesion. II. Freely mobile repellers.

The equilibrium adhesion of a cell or vesicle to a substrate is analyzed in a theoretical model in which two types of mobile molecules in the cell membrane are of interest: receptors that can form bonds with fixed ligands in the substrate and repellers that repel the substrate. If the repulsion between the repeller molecule and substrate is greater than kT, there is substantial redistribution of the repellers from the contact area. Coexisting equilibrium states are observed having comparable free energies (a) with unstretched bonds and repeller redistribution and (b) with stretched bonds and partial redistribution.     

Aspects of audit. 1. The background.

Methods of reviewing health care already exist in Britain, but the debate continues about how practical and acceptable such a review is. The many different terms used to describe review only confuse the issue. "Audit" is a useful term for describing the review of medical work by medical people. This can be divided into "internal audit," or peer review, and "external audit"--that is, review by organisations outside hospital and general practice. The concepts of internal and external audit have a great impact upon the attitudes held by the medical profession about audit. The shortcomings of audit by the professional standards review organisations in the United States are not inevitable in Britian.     

PHYCOLOGICAL NOTES. H. EUGLENA MYXOCYLINDRACEA SP. NOV.12

A previously undescribed species of Euglena, E. myxocylindracea, sp. nov., is described from soil in a garden and in a while pine woods in Pike County, Pa. In addition to the, type, an organism (No. 457) in the Culture Collection of Algae. Indiana University, hitherto designated E. viridis var. terricola. is transferred to E. myxocylindracea as var. terricola. Differences such as the usual absence of an emergent flagellum, or the presence of an extremely short one (ca. 3.5–4 μ), and the dominance of a palmelloid state in a variety of liquid and solid culture media in which the cells secrete dichotomously branching slimy cylinders distinguish the new species from E. viridis.     

E.s.r. of free radicals in irradiated uracil-beta-D-arabinofuranoside.

Electron-spin-resonance measurements have been made on single crystals of uracil-beta-D-arabinofuranoside, which were irradiated by 4-0 MeV electrons at 77 K. At low temperatures, two radicals have been identified, one attributed to a hydrogen abstraction from 05' in the sugar moiety and the other to a radical anion located on the pyrimidine ring. The former is very unstable and seems to act as a precursor to other unidentified radical species stable at 77K. At room temperature, the main resonance is due to hydrogen addition to C5 and is probably produced by protonation of the anion. This same radical is also produced by X-irradiation at room temperature.     

Nitrospira marina gen. nov. sp. nov.: a chemolithotrophic nitrite-oxidizing bacterium

A new chemolithotrophic nitrite-oxidizing bacterium, for which the name Nitrospira marina is proposed, was isolated from the Gulf of Maine. N. marina is a Gramnegative curved rod which may form spirals with 1 to 12 turns. Cells have a unique periplasmic space and lack intracytoplasmic membranes and carboxysomes. N. marina is an obligate chemolithotroph, but best growth is obtained in a mixotrophic medium. N. marina may be one of the most prevalent nitrite-oxidizing bacteria in some oceanic environments. Type strain is field with American Type Culture Collection (ATCC 43039).     

For debate . . . Individual contributions to multiauthor papers.

The curricula vitae of four candidates for a professorial appointment at Athens University were examined to estimate the actual contribution of each candidate to the papers of which he was a coauthor. A total of 879 research papers by the four candidates were analysed in terms of the number of authors, the sequence of names, and the year of publication. The four authors presented 364, 349, 96, and 70 papers. If an equal contribution of all coauthors is assumed, the actual number of papers (all papers divided by the number of authors), is about 106, 83, 28, and 26, respectively, so that the rank of the four candidates did not change. On the assumption that the contribution was related to the candidate''s position in the order of the coauthors'' names, the numbers of papers were corrected to 84, 95, 26, 33 using one statistical method and to 88, 94, 28, 31 using another. These assumptions may not be valid, however, especially as the last author may be more important than the intermediate ones. It is suggested that the journals require authors to state their specific contribution to a paper, such as original idea, planning, collecting data, writing up, etc.     

N.m.r. and biochemistry

The role and historical progress of n.m.r. applications in biochemistry are briefly outlined. Technical advances over the years have made n.m.r., at last, a technique which can give valuable information about a wide range of biochemical topics, from enzyme kinetics in vivo to the structure of protein-DNA complexes. Emphasis here is placed on studies of proteins, especially those made up from mosaics of modules. It is shown that n.m.r. can readily give detailed structural information about individual protein modules and that valuable information about the structure and function of the intact mosaic protein can be inferred.     

Neurobiology of Stomotoca. I. Action systems.

The layout of nerves, muscles, and conducting epithelia is described for the simple hydrozoan medusa Stomotoca. Comparisons are drawn with Sarsia and other recently studied forms. The major action systems are those responsible for swimming, crumpling (protective involution), tentacle posture, pointing (unilateral reciprocal flexions of the manubrium and margin), and visceral movements (barely mentioned). Crumpling is a simple summating response in this species. Crumpling and pointing are considered to use the same effectors but different conduction pathways. New histological results include the demonstration of a nerve plexus running through the endodermal canal system and a nerve plexus in the ectoderm encircling the peduncle. Special attention is given to the distribution of synapses and gap junctions, as possible trasmission pathways in behavioral responses. Some details are included on organization within the marginal nerve rings.     

Crystal structure and n.m.r. analysis of lactulose trihydrate.

The 13C CPMAS n.m.r. spectrum of 4-O-beta-D-galactopyranosyl-D-fructose (lactulose) trihydrate, C12H22O11.3 H2O, identifies the isomer in the crystals as the beta-furanose. This is confirmed by a crystal structure analysis, using CuK alpha X-ray data at room temperature. The space group is P212121, with Z = 4 and cell dimensions a = 9.6251(3), b = 12.8096(3), c = 17.7563(4) A. The structure was refined to R = 0.031 and Rw 0.025 for 1929 observed structure amplitudes. All the hydrogen atoms were unambigously located on difference syntheses. The conformation of the pyranose ring is the normal 4C1 chair and that of the furanose ring is 4T3. The 1----4 linkage torsion angles are O-5'-C-1'-O-1'-C-4 = 79.9(2) degrees and C-1'-O-1'-C-4-C-5 = -170.3(2) degrees. All hydroxyls, ring and glycosidic oxygens, and water molecules are involved in the hydrogen bonding, which consists of infinite chains linked together by water molecules to form a three-dimensional network. There is a three-centered intramolecular, interresidue hydrogen bond from O-3-H to O-5' and O-6'. The n.m.r. spectrum of the amorphous, dehydrated trihydrate suggests the occurrence of a solid-state reaction forming the same isomeric mixture as was observed in crystalline anhydrous lactulose, although the mutarotation of the trihydrate when dissolved in Me2SO is very slow.
