The morphological variation between populations of Cochlearia in Northern Scandinavia has been analysed. The variation is correlated to ecology, and four ecotypes are recognized. Based on the morphological differentiation of the ecotypes and the results of crossing experiments, the populations are referred to the following three taxa: C. officinalis ssp. officinalis which includes the common beach ecotype and the bird cliff ecotype; C. officinalis ssp. integrifolia stat. nov. which includes the spring ecotype growing in inland localities up to about 600 m a.s.l. in cold more or less eutrophic springs, and C. officinalis ssp. norvegica ssp. nov. which includes the estuary ecotype, growing in poor, often inundated habitats near river outlets at the fjord ends. All the differentiation has taken place at the tetraploid level (2n = 24). The subspecies are kept more or less distinct due to ecological and seasonal isolating mechanisms rather than internal, reproductive barriers. A key to the subspecies and distribution maps for ssp. integrifolia and ssp. norvegica are presented.  相似文献

Phenotypic and genetic variation within and among eight populations of Arabis serrata are documented in this study. This species shows great morphological variation throughout its geographical distribution in Japan. Plants are located in habitats with different types of soils and degree of disturbance. Half-sibs progenies from eight populations were collected and cultivated in a garden experiment. Nine morphological traits representing size and shape of rosette leaves were recorded. Univariate analyses of measured traits showed that phenotypic means differed among populations for all characters. Leaves of plants from disturbed habitats had the longest petioles (lanceolate) and plants from limestone habitats showed the most roundness in leaf shape (ovate). The northernmost populations always revealed the smallest leaves. Multivariate principal component analyses also showed that leaf shape and size varied among populations. The first three principal components explained 98.5% of the variation. Coefficients of variation had a very wide range and differed from one population to another. Some traits (e.g. leaf width/leaf length ratio) were consistently less variable while others (e.g. leaf area and petiole length) were more plastic. All traits had significant genetic variance in all populations. Intra-class correlation coefficients differed for most of the traits and each population presented a different range of values. Most of the leaf traits were intercorrelated in all the populations studied, although some populations were integrated more tightly for some traits. Populations of A. serrata are differentiated in phenotypic means but they display a mosaic of traits with slight morphological differences in each locality (i.e. a quantitative genetic variation). Some traits can be correlated to the habitats that they occupy but for some of them it is difficult to assign an actual adaptive value.  相似文献

To determine if anthropogenically modified habitats possess greater numbers of round goby and serve as dispersal vectors, we used angling to compare catch‐per‐unit of effort for 64 natural and modified habitat areas. In addition, a gravel natural habitat was seined to compare length frequency distribution with anthropogenically modified habitats. Natural habitats included gravel beaches and natural rubble and cliff wall, while modified habitats included artificial riprap, concrete sea wall, and metal sheet piling. No significant difference in relative abundance was observed in round goby preference among modified habitats (P = 0.52), but natural gravel habitats were significantly different from modified habitats that included artificial riprap (P = 0.002), concrete sea wall (P < 0.001), and metal sheet piling (P = 0.003). When habitat subcategories were compared using anova , the natural gravel beach habitat was significantly different from the three artificial substrates and from natural rubble and cliff wall substrates (P < 0.004). No round goby were caught from gravel beach habitats; thus, this habitat was removed from further analysis. A Student t‐test indicated no significant difference between habitats was found between the natural rubble and cliff wall habitat and the three other artificial habitats (concrete sea wall, P = 0.33; riprap, P = 0.53; metal sheet piling, P = 0.11). We further evaluated gravel beach habitats to determine the reason for the lack of goby capture. We seined gravel beach habitat and collected 328 individuals, with which we evaluated the length‐frequency distribution and calculated length–weight relationships by sex. Our results indicated that only 5.2% of the goby population was available for capture by angling on the gravel beach habitat. A t‐test comparing the demographic attributes between seining and angling indicated a significant difference between goby length (P < 0.001) and weight (P < 0.001). The regression slope indicated an ontogenetic habitat shift occurred near 62 mm standard length. Smaller round goby individuals were found in less structurally complex gravel beach habitat, while larger individuals were associated with complex habitat.  相似文献

The response of overwintered stolons of nine contrasting white clover populations to temperature, photoperiod and natural conditions was studied in six environments during the spring. Rate of leaf appearance, leaflet length, petiole length, stolon internode length, dry matter distribution within the plant and total dry weight were measured on 15 plants of each population/environment combination. Most characters, except leaf size and proportion of dry matter allocated to leaf, responded positively to temperature in the range 10 – 20°C. A positive effect of photoperiod extension was also found for all characters except rate of leaf appearance, internode length and distribution of dry matter to leaf. Population differences in response to environment were found which were related to both leaf size classification and origin. Stolon dry weight was positively correlated with leaf length, petiole length and stolon internode length in most environments. The relationships between the eight characters were often complex and canonical variate analysis provided a convenient way to discriminate between the populations based on all eight characters.  相似文献

Leaf mass per unit area (LMA), carbon and nitrogen contents, leaf construction cost, and photosynthetic capacity (P max) of Adiantum reniforme var. sinensis, an endangered fern endemic to the Three Gorges region in southwest China, were compared in five populations differing in habitat such as soil moisture and irradiance. The low soil moisture and high irradiance habitat population exhibited significantly higher LMA, area-based leaf construction (CCA), and carbon content (CA), but lower leaf nitrogen content per unit dry mass (NM) than the other habitat populations. The high soil moisture and low irradiance habitat populations had the lowest CCA, but their cost/benefic ratios of CCA/P max were similar to the medium soil moisture and irradiance habitat population due to their lower leaf P max. Hence A. reniforme var. sinensis prefers partially shaded, moist but well-drained, slope habitats. Due to human activities, however, its main habitats now are cliffs or steeply sloped bare rocks with poor and thin soil. The relatively high energy requirements and low photosynthetic capacity in these habitats could limit the capability of the species in extending population or interspecific competition and hence increase its endangerment.  相似文献

为研究克隆植物在不同生境中对小生境的利用能力和对不同尺度异质性生境的等级可塑性及其格局差异,比较了林缘和荒草坡不同草本层盖度小生境中积雪草(Centella asiatica)分株种群、克隆片段和叶水平的形态和生理特征。在分株种群水平,林缘和荒草坡积雪草被测的分株种群特征差异均不显著,不同草本层盖度小生境间积雪草根冠比差异显著,即在盖度小的小生境中其根冠比显著大于盖度大的小生境。在克隆片段水平,林缘和荒草坡生境显著影响积雪草的根干重、花果干重、一级匍匐茎节间长和总匍匐茎节间长,而不同草本层盖度小生境则显著影响花果干重、根冠比、一级匍匐茎数、二级匍匐茎节间长和总匍匐茎节间长。荒草坡积雪草拥有更大的根干重和花果干重,但一级匍匐茎节间长和总匍匐茎节间长较短。草本层盖度小的小生境中积雪草的根冠比和一级匍匐茎数显著高于盖度大的小生境,而花果干重、二级匍匐茎节间长和总匍匐茎节间长则相反。在叶水平,荒草坡和草本层盖度大的小生境中,积雪草的叶片长、叶片宽和叶面积都较大,而草本层盖度大的小生境中积雪草叶柄长和比叶柄长都显著大于盖度小的小生境;林缘和荒草坡生境与不同草本层盖度小生境对4个叶绿素指标影响均不显著,林缘和荒草坡生境与不同草本层盖度小生境的交互作用对所有测量特征均无显著影响。上述结果表明,积雪草对不同生境和有草本层盖度差异的小生境的反应存在等级可塑性,但是二者的等级差异格局不同;等级反应格局的差异反映出积雪草对不同生境条件有不同的生态适应对策,且对生境小尺度异质性的可塑性强于对大尺度异质性的可塑性。  相似文献

Plants grown from seeds of Sagittaria falcata, S. lancifolia, S. platyphylla, S. rigida, S. isoetiformis and S. papillosa were grown in water-saturated soil or soil submerged to 4.5, 12, 19.5 or 27 cm. Length and width of leaves and petiole lengths were measured at anthesis of the first flower on the first inflorescence produced by each plant. In general, leaf width and length were decreased by submergence, and petiole length increased. The species × water depth interaction was significant for emersed leaf width, leaf length and petiole length except for S. lancifolia leaf length and S. papillosa leaf length and width. These trends indicate genetic differences among, and variability within, taxa. Leaf width, leaf length and petiole length of plants growing in seed source populations were measured. The means from these measurements, when compared to those from experimental plants, indicate that both groups of plants respond similarly to variations in water depth.  相似文献

Eurya japonica occurs in diverse light environments through seed dispersal by birds. As the seed size is extremely small, we hypothesized that newly germinated seedlings with restricted depth of roots and length of the hypocotyl would suffer high mortality due to increased transpiration in sunny habitats and low light in shady habitats. We also expected that surviving seedlings would differ in leaf traits between habitats as a result of selection. We aimed to determine how photosynthetic traits differ between habitats and how leaf structure is related to this difference. We examined photosynthesis and leaf morpho‐anatomy for plants cloned from cuttings collected from the forest understory (shade population) and neighboring roadsides and cut‐over areas (sun population) and then grown under two irradiances (18.5% and 100% sunlight) in an experimental garden. Under growth in 100% sunlight, cloned plants from the sun population exhibited significantly greater area‐based photosynthetic capacity compared to cloned plants from the shade population at a comparable stomatal conductance, which was attributable to a higher area‐based leaf nitrogen concentration. On the other hand, mean values of photosynthetic capacity did not significantly differ between the two populations. Cloned plants from the sun population had significantly thicker leaf laminas and spongy tissue and lower stomatal density compared to cloned plants from the shade population. Thickened leaf lamina might have increased leaf tolerance to physical stresses in open habitats. The variation in leaf morpho‐anatomy between the two populations can be explained in terms of the economy of leaf photosynthetic tissue.  相似文献

A large proportion of temperate forest plant diversity is found in the herb layer. However, for many of its species, little is known about their autecology, which makes it difficult to assess potential threats and efficiently safeguard the diversity of understorey herbaceous communities. This also applies to Gagea spathacea (Liliaceae), a globally rare spring geophyte, which mainly occurs in deciduous forests of northern Central Europe. We investigated the causal relationships between population characteristics of G. spathacea and abiotic site conditions across different forest communities in the center of its distributional range. Leaf length (a surrogate of the species' vegetative propagation) was positively related to soil moisture and soil nitrogen. Consequently, mean leaf length was highest in moist forest communities of the alliance Alno-Ulmion. Moreover, mean variability in leaf length was lowest in those forests, indicating a higher and more stable vegetative propagation via bulbils. We found no support for a significant relationship between leaf length and leaf density or between leaf length and flower formation. Population density varied strongly among forest sites, but was not related to soil moisture and hardly influenced by soil nitrogen. Our results suggest that soil water and nutrient supply play a vital role in determining the species' vegetative propagation, whereas the duration of habitat continuity is most likely an important determinant of population size and density. Conservation strategies therefore require a better understanding of the complex interrelationships between abiotic site conditions and the historical context-dependency of habitats.  相似文献

The shell utilization patterns of two intertidal populations of the hermit crab, Pagurus longicarpus Say, were studied. The populations differed with respect to the physical characteristics of their habitats and the availability of empty gastropod shells. The first population was in an estuary connected to Narragansett Bay. This population had few, if any. empty shells available in the area. The second population was in a rock-cobble area directly on Block Island Sound. There were large numbers of empty gastropod shells available for this population. The consistently high gastropod mortality on this shore appears to be caused by the animals being washed up on the beach, where they die due to desiccation.Data from samples collected from June to November of both 1974 and 1975 showed that there were distinct differences in the shell utilization patterns of the two populations. A greater proportion of the animals collected from the estuary population inhabited damaged shells and/or shells with symbionts compared to the individuals from the population with large numbers of empty shells available.The results of shell selection experiments indicated that individuals from both populations inhabited less than preferred shells. The population with large numbers of empty shells available was qualitatively shell-limited because of the effect of physical factors on the morphology of the gastropod species of that area. In addition, the shell selection experiments showed that individuals from the two areas had significantly different shell preferences. This result may be explained by the effects of the environment on the growth rates of the hermit crabs and/or as an indication that shell preferences may vary in response to the physical factors of a given habitat.  相似文献

物种的遗传特征和外在环境条件的差异共同决定了植物功能性状的表达,植物功能性状可以反映物种对环境条件的适应策略。采用大样本抽样调查与统计分析方法,比较研究扎龙湿地4种生境(盐碱生境、旱生生境、湿生生境和水生生境)芦苇分株和叶功能性状,分析不同生境芦苇功能性状的分异规律及其对土壤因子的响应。结果表明:(1)不同生境芦苇功能性状均表现出中等程度变异。其中分株和叶性状均以盐碱生境最低(P<0.05),分株及除叶面积和比叶面积以外的叶性状均以水生生境最高;株高和株重在种群内的变异系数为15.96%-48.61%和38.65%-87.82%,种群间的变异系数为46.58%和66.39%;叶性状在种群内的变异系数为13.21%-72.37%,种群间的变异系数为26.46%-57.03%;(2)不同生境芦苇功能性状间存在协同变化特征。芦苇的株高、株重、叶长、叶宽、叶面积和叶重之间均呈极显著正相关关系(P<0.01),比叶面积与其他性状的相关性因生境不同存在一定变化;(3)不同生境芦苇的原位土壤因子表现出异质性特征,芦苇功能性状的变异是含水量、pH、有机质和速效氮等土壤因子综合作用的结果。其中含水量、有机质和速效氮为正向驱动,而pH为负向驱动。因此,芦苇通过自我调节功能性状更好地适应不同的生存环境,局域尺度不同生境的土壤因子是引起芦苇功能性状产生分异的导因。  相似文献

Seasonal patterns of changes in length and weight during their second year of life were studied in two intertidal populations of the tellinid bivalve Macoma balthica (L.), viz. in The Netherlands (Wadden Sea) and in France (Seine estuary). The Wadden Sea population showed a single and short annual period of growth in spring (March through June), followed by a long annual period of nearly stagnant length growth and loss of weight of the soft parts. The Seine population started to grow earlier in the year (February), likewise retarded growth in summer, but restarted in autumn, thus showing a dual annual growing season with periods of rapid gain of length and weight both during spring and in October.The timing and the presence and absence of a second annual growing season are discussed in relation to temperature and feeding conditions in the various habitats.  相似文献

Cistus salvifolius L. is a widespread Mediterranean shrub, occurring over a wide range of environments. Given the degree of habitat differentiation, and geographic isolation of some populations, adaptation to local conditions and hence population divergence might be expected to have occurred. To test this hypothesis morphology and allozyme diversity was measured in 13 populations collected from contrasting habitats around the Mediterranean. Leaf morphology (length, width and petiole length) and internode length varied widely between populations. Leaf width and internode length were negatively correlated with longitude, and leaf length was negatively correlated with mean rainfall. All populations were polymorphic at all allozyme loci studied, and no populations showed significant difference between levels of expected and observed heterozygotes. Allelic diversity (Hs) within populations was high, and populations from the more extreme sites showed no decrease in diversity or predominance of rare genotypes, suggesting there is little selection for characters favouring survival in local conditions. Some populations from highly contrasting habitats, in terms of rainfall, appeared to be genetically similar. However, there were differences between some populations, in areas less than 1 km apart, which have similar geography and climate. Results suggest that the C. salvifolius populations examined may not be as adapted to local environmental conditions as expected. Periodic fires, gene flow, and environmental heterogeneity may all help maintain genetic diversity and hinder adaptation.  相似文献

The critical thermal maximum (CTM) of Etheostoma spectabile differed significantly among four populations whose habitats ranged from thermally constant to highly fluctuating conditions. Mean CTM of the population at the most fluctuating location was highest, populations in intermediate thermal environments were intermediate in thermal tolerance, and a population in a constant temperature spring run had thelowest CTM. The results support the view that thermal physiology can be evolutionarily labile within a species, and that changes respond to directional selection.  相似文献

We evaluated in common-garden experiments the morphological plasticity to shading of three Convolvulus species that occur in Chile and differ in ecological breadth. Convolvulus arvensis L. is a world weed distributed along the country, and is found in open as well as in shaded habitats. Convolvulus chilensis Pers. is a Chilean endemic species typical of coastal habitats, and is found in open to partially open sites. C. demissus choisy occurs only on slopes of the Andes of Chile and Argentina, habitats with high incidence of solar radiation. We hypothesized that the magnitude of phenotypic plasticity to shading of these species would correlate with their ecological breadth. Shading had a significant effect on internode length, petiole length, stem diameter, stem length, number of branches, leaf area, leaf shape, leaf biomass, and specific leaf area. Species differed in all the morphological traits except leaf biomass. A significant Shading × Species interaction in the two-way ANOVA, i.e. differential plasticity to shading of Convolvulus species, was found for petiole length, stem length, number of branches, leaf shape, and specific leaf area. Contrary to our hypothesis, tests of parallelism showed that, in general, the plasticity to shading of C. chilensis (the species of intermediate ecological breadth) was the greatest, and that of C. arvensis (the weed) and C. demissus (the species of narrow distribution) was similar. Issues of ecotype differentiation, in the case of C. arvensis, and the role of life history traits are raised to explain the observed lack of association between ecological breadth and magnitude of phenotypic plasticity.  相似文献

Morphological responses to light and effects of physiological integration on local morphological responses are examined for Hydrocotyle vulgaris and Lamiastrum galeobdolon, stoloniferous herbs from open fenlands and forest understoreys, respectively. An assessment was made of whether these clonal herbs of similar morphology but from contrasting habitats show different foraging behaviour for light. In a garden experiment, the plants wer subjected to four levels of light availability, and to a split treatment in which the primary stolons grew along the border of patches of the two intermediate light levels. In this treatment the plant parts on opposite sides of the primary stolons were in contrasting light environments. Petiole extension was more responsive to light conditions in Hydrocotyle than in Lamiastrum, while the opposite was true for leaf area. Both species showed similar responses in stolon internode length and specific leaf area (SLA). Integration did not significantly modify local responses in stolon internode length in either species. Local responses in petiole length, leaf area and SLA of Hydrocotyle ramets were not significantly affected by physiological integration, except for the SLA of ramets in high light which was evened out by integration. In contrast, in Lamiastrum, local responses in petiole length, leaf area and SLA of many ramets in the shaded and/or light patch were significantly evened out by integration. As a result, interconnected ramets in patches of different light supply developed very different morphologies in Hydrocotyle, but not in Lamiastrum. The results indicate that the species differed in ramet morphological responses to light intensity as well as in effects of integration on local morphological responses, and suggest that species from different habitats show different foraging behaviour for light.  相似文献

Populations of two rhizomatous species, Asarum europaeum (asarabacca) and Maianthemum bifolium (May lily), were examined in two, and four forest habitats respectively, in the Roztocze National Park (south-eastern Poland). May lily populations were studied in habitats: the Carpathian beechwood, upland mixed fir forest, subboreal moist mixed coniferous forest and bog-alder forest. Asarabacca was studied in two habitats: beechwood and Scots pine community (an 80-year-old plantation). In both the species studied intra- and inter-populational differences of the size of genets in terms of above- and below-ground parts of individuals as well as the biomass and area occupied were observed. In May lily populations the greatest mean number of shoots per genet was found in the fir forest (11.62±3.29), a value almost twice as great as that in the moist coniferous forest and nearly three times greater than in the bog-alder forest. Total rhizome length was also the greatest in the fir forest (351.9±98.7 cm) followed by moist coniferous forest, beechwood and alder forest habitats. In all populations of May lily a greater part of total dry weight biomass is in below-ground organs. The greatest biomass value of a genet was found in the fir forest (4.275 g), the smallest in the bog-alder forest (0.110 g). All populations differed significantly in terms of leaf area, leaf length (with the exception of fir forest and beechwood habitats where the values were the greatest), and leaf width (excluding moist coniferous and bog-alder forests which had the smallest values). In the case of asarabacca, both the mean number of ramets per genet (3.36±0.45 vs. 2.49±0.20) and total rhizome length (40.3±6.4 cm vs. 21.1±1.8 cm) were greater in the beechwood habitat than in the pine community. In the first population genets had 3–5 times greater the total biomass of those from the pine community. Only genets of the latter had proportionately more dry weight biomass in above-ground parts. It seems to be correlated with greater rhizome dieback and disintegration of genets into smaller units. Both populations were significantly different in terms of all examined parameters of leaves. Genets of both the species studied were found to have their own structure of developmental phases that often differed for shoots and rhizomes.  相似文献

Seedlings of 10 contrasting white clover populations differing in leaf size and origin were grown in a glasshouse in spring and autumn, and in controlled environments in which temperature (10°, 15°, 20°C), photoperiod ( 8 , 16-h) and irradiance ( 13, 47 , 57 Wm-2) were varied. There were large effects of these environmental variables on a range of morphological characters. Population differences were closely related to classification of the populations by leaf size. Within the large leaf types there was also an effect of origin. In particular, Mediterranean types differed from those of northern origin. Rate of leaf appearance increased with temperature but was less affected by photoperiod. Population differences were greater at lower temperatures. Petiole length was more sensitive to temperature than was leaflet length, particularly in the range 10° to 15°C. Similarly, petiole length increased appreciably with photoperiod extension; smaller leaf types responded more than large leaf types with the result that there were no population differences in the 16-h photoperiod. Population differences in the other environments were closely related to leaf size classification. The onset of stolon production was delayed by lower temperatures and by short photoperiods but stolon number at the sixth leaf stage of development was not closely related to this character in the temperature environments since stolon numbers increased at lower temperatures. In low temperature and short day conditions the large leaf types including those of Mediterranean origin showed a desirable combination of long petioles and large leaves compared with the smaller leaf types. However, these differences between the two groups were eliminated for petiole length, and much reduced for leaflet length, by the greater response to temperature and photoperiod of the smaller leaf types. The implications of these responses for seasonal production are discussed. There were large effects of irradiance on the lengths of leaflets and petioles with longer ones at higher irradiance levels. There were also faster rates of leaf appearance at higher light levels. Stolon production was faster at 57 Wm-2 than at 47 Wm-2 while at 13 Wm-2 no stolons were produced. After an extended period in the lowest light environment there was some plant mortality.  相似文献

通过对黄土高原水蚀风蚀交错区主要生长月份柠条锦鸡儿(Caragana korshinlii Kom.)叶片比叶面积(SLA)和矿质元素含量的测定,探讨其对生境条件及生长时间的响应规律,结果表明:不同生境柠条锦鸡儿叶片SLA随生长月份的变化趋势基本一致,但变化差异不显著;不同生境叶片有机碳(C)含量变化差异不显著;叶片全氮(N)含量、全钾(K)含量对生长月份的变化响应明显,变异幅度较大,而随生境条件发生的变异较小;叶片全磷(P)含量在不同生境随着生长月份发生的变异较大。不同生境叶片N/P随月份发生的变异较大、C/P的变异较小;叶片C/N、C/K在不同生境间无明显差异,但均随生长月份而产生较大变化,叶片N、P、K的含量与SLA相关性不明显。所以,生境条件和生长时间是柠条锦鸡儿叶片结构特性和养分组成发生变化的重要原因,其叶片比叶面积与矿质养分含量受外界环境因子和自身发育状况的共同调控。  相似文献
