One hundred and one Angus cows (average weight 614 kg) and their bull calves (average weight 213 kg) grazing improved summer pastures were used to determine cow and calf intake of liquid supplement, and its effect on forage intake and performance. Forty-seven pairs had access to a 410 g CP/kg DM molasses-based liquid supplement in an open feeder and 54 pairs were not supplemented. The study was conducted in southwestern Montana from July 28 to October 3, 1997. Cows consumed significantly more supplement (0.3 kg/day) than calves (0.1 kg/day) but both consumed 0.5 g/kg bodyweight per day. Supplemented cows gained 0.12 kg/day more (p<0.05) than unsupplemented cows; however, there was no difference (p>0.10) in body condition score change. Average daily gain by supplemented calves was 30% greater (p<0.01) than average daily gain by unsupplemented calves. Forage intake (g/kg body weight) by both supplemented cows and calves was 64% greater (p<0.01) than forage intake by unsupplemented cows and calves. There was no difference (p>0.10) in milk intake between supplemented and unsupplemented calves. There was no difference (p>0.10) in time spent at the supplement feeder between cows and calves, averaging 5.0 min/day. Time at the feeder was lowest for 7-year-old cows, intermediate for 6- and 8-year-old cows, and highest for 9-year-old cows (p<0.10). There was no difference (p>0.10) in supplement feeding bouts/day between age groups of cows. Calf liquid supplement intake (g/kg body weight) and time spent at the supplement feeder were similar to intake and time spent at the feeder by cows. Liquid supplementation increased forage intake and average daily gain by cows and calves grazing improved forages in late summer. The cost for additional weight gained by the supplemented calves was US$ 0.33/kg and October cattle prices in Montana were US$ 1.64/kg. Twenty-four grazing Holstein cows in mid and late lactation were randomly assigned to two treatment groups: control and cooled. The trial was performed at the Experimental Dairy Unit, Rafaela Agricultural Experimental Station (INTA), Argentina. The objective was to evaluate the effects of sprinkler and fan cooling before milkings on milk production and composition. The effects of the cooling system on rectal temperature and respiration rate were also evaluated. Cooled cows showed higher milk production (1.04 l cow–1 day–1). The concentration and yield of milk fat and protein increased in response to cooling treatment. The cooling system also reduced rectal temperature and respiration rate. No effects were observed on body condition. It was concluded that evaporative cooling, which is efficient for housed animals, is also appropriate to improve yields and animal well-being under grazing systems. These results are impressive since the cooling system was utilized only before milkings, in a system where environmental control is very difficult to achieve. This trial was performed during a mild summer. The results would probably be magnified during hotter weather. 相似文献

Thirty-two multiparous Holando argentino cows in mid lactation were randomly assigned to two treatments: control or HFF (hydrogenated fish fat) at Rafaela, 31° 11’ South, during summer 1997/1998, to evaluate the effect of using HFF as a supplement under grazing conditions. Animals in both treatments grazed an alfalfa pasture, and were confined from 1000 hours to 1700 hours daily in a shaded pen where water was provided ad libitum. During each milking, animals in the control group received 3.73 kg dry matter per cow each day (DM cow–1 day–1) concentrate (15% crude protein; 8.69 MJ energy for location/kg DM). Cows in the HFF group received 3.25 kg DM cow–1 day–1 concentrate, plus 0.200 kg DM cow–1 day–1 HFF. Both diets presented similar energy, protein and neutral detergent fibre contents. The trial was performed during a strong ”El Niño” event, which resulted in a total rainfall of 396.3 mm (80% higher than normal). The mean temperature was 23.7 (SD 3.2)°C and the mean temperature humidity index was 72.9 (SD 4.96). Production data were analysed using a completely randomised design with analysis of covariance. Supplementation with HFF produced an increase in daily milk production (26.4 (SD 2.46) l/cow compared to 23.9 (SD 2.68) l/cow for the controls; P<0.05). Milk fat production was higher for HFF (P<0.05): 941 (SD 96) g cow–1 day–1 as compared to controls, which yielded 846 (SD 95) g cow–1 day–1. Milk protein yields also differed significantly (P<0.05), the respective values for HFF and controls being 795 (SD 72) g cow–1 day–1 and 715 (SD 83) g cow–1 day–1. It was concluded that hydrogenated fish fat could be a good ingredient to sustain high yields and elevated maintenance requirements in a grazing system during hot conditions. 相似文献

The objective of this study was to assess prevalence of verotoxin-producing Escherichia coli (VTEC) in culled beef cows at the time of shipping to slaughter. Feces were collected from 82 cows on eight Nevada ranches during fall and winter (from September to January) after grazing rangeland forages. A random sample (n = 154) of potential VTEC isolates were tested for verotoxicity and were screened for the presence (polymerase chain reaction) and expression (VTEC-reversed passive latex agglutination assay) of the toxin genes (i.e., VT1 and VT2). Seventeen isolates from four ranches were VTEC. Of these, four had the VT1 gene, five had the VT2 gene, seven had both genes, and one did not have either gene despite its toxicity to Vero cells. Except for one isolate (i.e., untypeable that reacted with VT1-latex beads without having VT1 gene), the genotype and phenotype data of the VTEC isolates matched. Another isolate (O8:H- [nonmotile]) was verotoxic, but neither had nor expressed the toxin genes. Of the 17 isolates, four (from one cow) were O157:H7, 11 (from five cows on three ranches) were non-O157:H7 (two O8:H-, three O105:H-, three O116:H-, and three O141:H-), and two were untypeable. Because some of these VTEC serotypes (i.e., O8:H-, O141:H-, and O157:H7) are known to cause human illnesses, it is beneficial to identify VTEC-positive cows before slaughter. This is a critical step in any pre- or post-harvest strategy to minimize the risk of beef contamination with such pathogens. 相似文献

with 3 weeks for water adaptation and 1 week for measurements. Feed and water intake, milk production and composition, body
weight and condition score and rumen parameters were evaluated. No treatment effects were observed in any of the variables
evaluated, with the exception of water intake, which was higher for animals receiving 10,000 mg/l TDS in the drinking water
(189 l/day vs. 106 and 122 l/day for cows receiving water with 1,000 and 5,000 mg/l TDS, respectively). Water intake was significantly
higher for animals in treatment 10,000 (P < 0.05). It was concluded that the rumen presents a surprising buffer capacity and that consideration of TDS alone is insufficient

In grazing systems, the quality of the pasture is an ever-changing scenario: weather, forage variety, level of fertilisation and age of the plant are some of many factors influencing the quality of the cows’ diet. Furthermore, accurate dry matter intake measurements are difficult to obtain under grazing conditions. As a result, the use of mathematical models to describe aspects of pasture digestion has been limited in practice. Stochastic modelling might overcome this limitation. In the current example, a static model of cow digestion (National Research Council (NRC), 2001. Nutrient Requirements of Dairy Cattle. National Academy Press, Washington, DC, USA) was coded into a software package for probabilistic simulation (GoldSim v. 9.2) using stochastic variables for pasture chemical composition and dry matter intake. Partitioning of crude protein (nitrogen) in the rumen of cows was simulated over a period of 7 weeks in early spring to estimate the potential losses of nitrogen due to high ruminal degradability of protein when different levels and types of supplementary feeds were offered. More than 98% of the simulations resulted in estimated excess of rumen degradable protein of up to 561 g N/d. By comparison, the magnitude of deficit was small (up to −42 g N/d) in the simulations with negative values for rumen degradable protein balance. Pasture crude protein concentration was the stochastic variable with the biggest influence on the amount of rumen degradable protein. Higher levels of supplementation (60 g DM supplements per 100 g DMI) resulted in estimated excess rumen degradable protein that was 0.3 of that obtained from simulations with lower levels of supplementation (35 g DM supplements per 100 g DMI). Stochastic simulation may be useful to explore the likelihood of responses to management scenarios designed to increase the efficiency of dietary nitrogen utilisation in pastoral systems characterised by uncertainty and variability. 相似文献

The objective was to determine pregnancy rate and stage of embryonic loss in response to grazing endophyte-free (E-; n = 20) or infected (E+; n = 30) tall fescue in postpartum beef cows with calves. Three weeks before estrus synchronization, cow-calf pairs were introduced to pastures (April 1999). Cows were synchronized and bred by AI after detected estrus for a period of 6 d and then by natural service for 62 d. Bulls were rotated weekly to minimize effects of fescue toxicosis on male fertility. Fetal development was monitored weekly between 30 and 60 d of pregnancy and at weaning using transrectal ultrasound. Respiration rate (52.0 +/- 1.4 vs 46.6 breaths/min; P < 0.02) and rectal temperature (39.6 +/- .09 vs 38.8 +/- .12 degrees C; P < 0.001) increased in E+ cows and serum concentrations of prolactin (7.2 vs 57.4 +/- 4.4 ng/mL; P < 0.001), total cholesterol (123.2 vs 149.6 +/- 3.6 mg/dL; P < 0.001), body condition (3.8 vs 5.2 +/- 0.15; P < 0.001; 1 = thin, 9 = fat) and adjusted weaning weight of calves (195.8 vs 210.8 +/- 4.5 kg; P < 0.02) were reduced compared to that of E- cows. Differences were not detected (E- vs E+) for estrus detection rate (84.9 +/- 10.6% vs 80.2 +/- 8.4%), pregnancy rate to synchronized estrus (41.7 +/- 11.8% vs 46.8 +/- 9.5%), overall pregnancy rate 30 d postbreeding (93.8 +/- 6.2% vs 93.5 +/- 5.1%), overall pregnancy rate at 60 d postbreeding (86.7 +/- 10.1% vs 81.2 +/- 8.3%), or serum concentrations of progesterone on day of PGF2alpha treatment (4.5 +/- 0.7 vs 4.5 +/- 0.8 ng/mL). Pregnancy losses that occurred between 30 and 60 d gestation were 6.0 (E-) vs 15.0 (E+) +/- 8.0% (P > 0.10) and occurred after environmental temperatures rose above 37.8 degrees C for three weeks. Total pregnancy losses that occurred by weaning (between 70 and 126 d of gestation) were 5.5 (E-) vs 17.6 (E+) +/- 8.0% (P > 0.10). Pregnancy rate and embryonic losses were not different between cows grazing E- and E+ tall fescue under these management conditions. 相似文献

Changes in ovarian function in mature beef cows grazing endophyte infected tall fescue 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
The objective was to examine follicular and luteal development and function in mature, lactating beef cows grazing endophyte free (E-) or endophyte infected (E+) tall fescue during the early postpartum period. Angus, Hereford, and Angus x Hereford cows were exposed to pasture for 37-39 days before synchronized estrus. Serum concentrations of prolactin were evaluated during the luteal phase before the synchronized estrus. Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for one estrous cycle ovaries were monitored by transrectal ultrasonography and blood was collected for determination of serum concentrations of progesterone and estradiol in cows that responded to synchronization. Signs of fescue toxicosis in E+ cows included decreased serum concentrations of prolactin (84.9+/-13.6 pg/ml versus 32.3+/-12.0 pg/ml; P < 0.009) measured during the luteal phase (day 37 of grazing) and decreased body condition of cows and weight of cows and calves (P < 0.001). Neither serum concentrations of progesterone or estradiol, nor diameter of the CL differed between treatments. Diameter of the largest follicle tended to be smaller for cows grazing E+ fescue, especially between days 8 and 12 of the estrous cycle (P < 0.08). Numbers of class 1 (3-5 mm) and class 3 (>10 mm) follicles were similar (P > 0.05) between treatments, but number of class 2 (6-9 mm) follicles was reduced in E+ cows for most of the cycle (days 10 through 20; P < 0.03). Length of synchronized estrous cycle, days open, calving interval, and pregnancy rate at 30, 45, 60, and 90 days post-breeding was similar (P > 0.05) among treatment groups. Even though follicular dynamics (diameter of the largest follicle and number of class 2 follicles) were altered in cows grazing E+ tall fescue, follicular function was apparently not affected by ergot alkaloids. 相似文献

The objective of this trial was to evaluate the effects of diet and cooling in the holding pen before milking on rectal temperature, respiration rate and milk production and composition. Fifty-eight lactating Holstein cows were used in a factorial split-plot design, at Rafaela Experimental Station from 12 January to 3 March 2003. The treatments were combinations of two diets: control (CD) and balanced (BD) with two levels of cooling before milking: none (NSF) and a sprinkler and fans (SF). Forage:concentrate ratios for CD and BD were 81:19 and 68:32, respectively. Cows were milked twice daily. Milk production was recorded daily, and milk composition (fat, protein, lactose and urea) was analysed twice a week. The physiological data were recorded once a week, before the cattle entered the holding pen and after milking, in the afternoon. Average maximum weekly temperature humidity index was 75.4 and ranged from 61.4 to 83. There were highly significant effects of cooling on physiological responses. Milk production was affected by diet and cooling, with no interaction; the highest and lowest production of milk was 22.42 and 20.07 l/cow per day, for BD+SF and CD+NSF, respectively. Protein was affected by diet, and was higher for BD (3.17 vs. 3.08%). There were interaction effects on milk fat at the 8% level, the highest concentration being 3.65% for BD+NFS. It was concluded that under grazing conditions, cooling by sprinkler and fans before milking improves the comfort of dairy cows, and that the effects on milk production and composition are enhanced when diets are specially formulated for heat-stress periods. 相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of adding fish oil (FO) and sunflower oil (SFO) to grazing dairy cows’ diets on the temporal changes in milk conjugated linoleic acid (cis-9, trans-11 CLA). Sixteen Holstein cows were divided into two diet regimen groups. One group (CONT) was fed a basal diet (7.6 kg DM basis) plus 400 g animal fat. The other group (FOSFO) were fed a basal diet plus 100 g of FO and 300 g of SFO (FOSFO). The cows were milked twice a day and milk samples were collected every 3-day for a period of 21 days. Both groups grazed together on pasture ad libitum and fed treatment diets after the morning and afternoon milking. Milk production, milk fat percentages, milk fat yield, milk protein percentages, and milk protein yield were not affected (P>0.05) by treatment diets. The concentrations of cis-9 trans-11 CLA and vaccenic acid (VA) in milk fat were higher (P<0.05) for cows fed the FOSFO over 3 week of lipid supplementation. The concentration of cis-9 trans-11 CLA in milk fat reached maximum on day 3 with both diets and remained relatively constant thereafter. The concentration of VA in milk fat followed the same pattern of temporal changes as cis-9 trans-11 CLA. In conclusion, milk cis-9, trans-11 CLA and VA concentrations increased with FO and SFO supplementation compared with the CONT diet and the increase reached a plateau on day 3 of supplementation and remained relatively constant throughout the remainder of the study. 相似文献

We compared diurnal patterns of vaginal temperature in lactating cows under grazing conditions to evaluate genotype effects
on body temperature regulation. Genotypes evaluated were Holstein, Jersey, Jersey × Holstein and Swedish Red × Holstein. The
comparison of Holstein and Jersey versus Jersey × Holstein provided a test of whether heterosis effects body temperature regulation.
Cows were fitted with intravaginal temperature recording devices that measured vaginal temperature every 15 min for 7 days.
Vaginal temperature was affected by time of day (P < 0.0001) and genotype × time (P < 0.0001) regardless of whether days in milk and milk yield were used as covariates. Additional analyses indicated that the
Swedish Red × Holstein had a different pattern of vaginal temperatures than the other three genotypes (Swedish Red × Holstein
vs others × time; P < 0.0001) and that Holstein and Jersey had a different pattern than Jersey × Holstein [(Holstein + Jersey vs Jersey × Holstein)
× time, P < 0.0001]. However, Holstein had a similar pattern to Jersey [(Holstein vs Jersey) × time, P > 0.10]. These genotype × time interactions reflect two effects. First, Swedish Red × Holstein had higher vaginal temperatures
than the other genotypes in the late morning and afternoon but not after the evening milking. Secondly, Jersey × Holstein
had lower vaginal temperatures than other genotypes in the late morning and afternoon and again in the late night and early
morning. Results point out that there are effects of specific genotypes and evidence for heterosis on regulation of body temperature
of lactating cows maintained under grazing conditions and suggest that genetic improvement for thermotolerance through breed

The objective of the present study was to determine the effect of level of feed intake of pasture on P4 clearance rates in dairy cows. Twelve non-lactating Holstein-Friesian cows aged 4-9 years were randomly allocated to a restricted or ad libitum group. The ad libitum group had unrestricted access to irrigated pasture, whereas the restricted group had access for only 2h per day. Each animal was drenched orally twice daily with a chromic oxide capsule to allow daily feed intake to be estimated from faecal output (FO). Endogenous progesterone (P4) production was eliminated by subcutanously implanting a capsule containing 6 mg of a potent GnRH-agonist (deslorelin) into the ear of each animal 3 weeks before inserting a CIDR device containing 1.9 g P4 into the vagina. Two luteolytic PGF2alpha were given 10 days later. Each device was removed after 11 days and residual P4 measured. Daily plasma samples were assayed for P4. Faecal samples were also taken daily and assayed for pregnanes (FP4M) containing a 20-oxo-, a 20alpha- or a 20beta-OH group with EIAs. The average daily dry matter (DM) intake of pasture was higher for cows in the ad libitum group (15.9 versus 6.3 kg DM, P=0.001). Their plasma P4 concentrations were lower (1.08 versus 1.71 ng/ml, P=0.05), even though the average residual P4 content of the used CIDR devices was not affected by feed intake (1.20 versus 1.25 g, P>0.05). The concentrations of FP4M were not affected by level of feed intake (20-oxo-: 3.3 versus 1.7, 20alpha-: 3.5 versus 3.7, 20beta-: 2.1 versus 3.2 microg/g DM). Daily excretion rates of 20-oxo- and 20alpha- were higher in ad libitum cows (20-oxo-: 17.8 versus 4.3mg per day, P=0.05; 20alpha-: 18.2 versus 8.9 mg per day, P=0.001), but daily yield of faecal 20beta- was not affected by feed intake (11.9 versus 8.6 mg per day, P=0.5). These results show that there was a negative relationship between feed intake and plasma P4 concentrations in these CIDR-treated GnRH-downregulated Holstein cows. Concentrations of FP4M were not affected by level of feed intake or FO, but daily excretion rate of FP4M was associated with the volume of faeces. 相似文献

Colour-infrared (CIR) imagery was evaluated for its usefulness to test hypotheses about grazing in the intertidal gastropods Nerita atramentosa (Reeve) and Bembicium nanum (Lamarck). Tiles of natural sandstone were placed onto the shore to accumulate micro-algae for a period of 6 weeks. Then, in the laboratory, three replicate tiles were assigned into each of 6 treatments (Nerita and Bembicum at densities of 3 or 6 animals, plus a control and a control for artifacts due to cages). CIR images were acquired before and three times after the animals were placed on the tiles. NIR / red ratio images, which are used to estimate micro-algal biomass, were generated from calibrated CIR data. Nerita at the greater density were more effective at removing micro-algae than at the smaller density. The latter were more effective than Bembicium at either density, which did not significantly decrease algal biomass from that in controls. These data are consistent with previous field observations and indicate that CIR imagery is an effective method for testing hypotheses about grazing by intertidal gastropods. 相似文献

Faecal samples were collected on day 0, 30 and 62. Overall percentage of faecal samples positive for E. coli O157:H7 was 2·6% and 2·0% for Salmonella . Percentage of cows positive for both E. coli O157:H7 and Salmonella on at least one occasion was 6·1%. BC, forage type or the interaction did not influence the prevalence of E. coli O157:H7 or Salmonella in the faeces of cows.
Conclusions: BC at initiation of the grazing period or loss of BC in moderate conditioned cows during the grazing period did not influence faecal shedding of E. coli O157:H7 or Salmonella . Consumption of either forage type did not influence faecal shedding of either E. coli O157:H7 or Salmonella in beef cows of thin or moderate BC.

Papillomatous digital dermatitis (PDD) is one of the most prevalent diseases of cattle, adversely affecting the dairy industry by its negative effect on milk production and reproductive performance. Our objective was to use culture-independent methods to determine the microbial diversity in different strata of PDD lesions of three Holstein dairy cows, analyzing whether major differences exist compared to foot skin of three non-infected cows. Both group-specific 16S rRNA gene PCR-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis and clone library sequencing of broad-range 16S rRNA gene showed differences between the microbial composition of healthy dairy cows and the different strata of the lesion. The predominant bacterial community in the lesion, regardless of the stratum, consisted of 166 specific phylotypes belonging to seven bacterial phyla. Spirochetes (particularly, treponemes) was the most prominent group detected in PDD deep biopsies and was only found in samples from the lesion. Additionally, one phylotype phylogenetically affiliated with uncultured Euryarchaeota was detected in two strata of the lesion. Sequences from healthy foot skin samples revealed 86 specific phylotypes that were affiliated with Firmicutes and Proteobacteria. Our study corroborates the theory that treponemes are involved in PDD disease etiology and suggests, for the first time, the presence of archaeal members in this particular bovine infection. 相似文献

MOTIVATION: It is widely appreciated that it is no longer possible for biomedical research scientists to keep up with as much of what is published in their field as they ought. One solution to this problem is to increase the efficiency of information use by moving away from the classical browsing model for scientific information dissemination towards an information on demand model which would allow researchers to access information quickly and efficiently only as they need it. The most common approach to this goal has been to use information retrieval technology to improve access to text databases of biomedical information. We are interested in exploring an alternative; encoding this information for storage in structured databases for efficient retrieval. RESULTS: Two small databases described here are test beds for development of structured digital publication software; the Tumor Gene Database, containing information about genes which are the sites for cancer-causing mutations, and the Mammary Transgene Database, containing information about expression of transgenes in agriculturally important animals. Both have been successfully searched by users and edited by curators via the World Wide Web. 相似文献
