The structure and arrangement of sensory organs in the tardigrade Halobiotus stenostomus (Richters 1908) have been studied using transmission and scanning electron microscopy techniques. The sensory organs found on the head of H. stenostomus are as follows: the circumoral sensory field, cephalic papillae, anterolateral and posterolateral sensory fields, and suboral sensory region. Four types of ciliated receptor structures are described in the sensory fields. The lateral sensory fields contain two types of receptor endings, dense and lucent, which differ in the presence or absence of a collar and in the structure of the outer dendrite segment. Two more types of receptor endings, ultrastructurally differing from the lateral sensory field receptors, are located in the suboral sensory region. Receptors with an asymmetric collar have been found, and a receptor ending without a collar is described for the first time in tardigrades. Unlike in other species studied, the sensory organs of H. stenostomus lack the lymph cavity surrounding the outer receptor segment. Similarity and differences in the ultrastructure of receptors between H. stenostomus and other species of Eutardigrada and Heterotardigrada are discussed.  相似文献

A sample from the holotype population of the limno-terrestrial eutardigrade Ramazzoltius varieornatus was examined in order to elucidate the variation occurring in the size of the sclerified structures of the pharyngeal apparatus. A frequency plot of body lengths was also produced to deduce the effectiveness of this technique in estimating the number of moults exhibited by this species. Problems associated with collecting and using morphometric data in this way are discussed. Additional ultrastructural information associated with moulting is also presented. New species within the genus may be difficult to recognize in the absence of adequate data related to intraspecific variation.  相似文献

The muscular architecture of Halobiotus crispae (Eutardigrada: Hypsibiidae) was examined by means of fluorescent‐coupled phalloidin in combination with confocal laser scanning microscopy and computer‐aided three‐dimensional reconstruction, in addition to light microscopy (Nomarski), scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The somatic musculature of H. crispae is composed of structurally independent muscle fibers, which can be divided into a dorsal, ventral, dorsoventral, and a lateral musculature. Moreover, a distinct leg musculature is found. The number and arrangement of muscles differ in each leg. Noticeably, the fourth leg contains much fewer muscles when compared with the other legs. Buccopharyngeal musculature (myoepithelial muscles), intestinal musculature, and cloacal musculature comprise the animal's visceral musculature. TEM of stylet and leg musculature revealed ultrastructural similarities between these two muscle groups. Furthermore, microtubules are found in the epidermal cells of both leg and stylet muscle attachments. This would indicate that the stylet and stylet glands are homologues to the claw and claw glands, respectively. When comparing with previously published data on both heterotardigrade and eutardigrade species, it becomes obvious that eutardigrades possess very similar numbers and arrangement of muscles, yet differ in a number of significant details of their myoanatomy. This study establishes a morphological framework for the use of muscular architecture in elucidating tardigrade phylogeny. J. Morphol. 2009. © 2009 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Seven species are reported from Ecuador, South America, two of which, Mixibius ornatus and Diphascon (Adropion) onorei, are new to science. Mixibius ornatus n. sp. differs from Mixibius saracenus (Pilato 1973) and from M. fueginus Pilato & Binda 1997 by having a sculptured cuticle, broader claws, lunulae present, stylet supports inserted on the buccal tube in a more caudal position, and shorter placoids. Diphascon (A.) onorei n. sp. has an elongate pharyngeal bulb with small apophyses, three rod-shaped macroplacoids, a granular microplacoid, and septulum; claw bases enlarged, smooth (first three pairs of legs) or crenate (outer claws on the hind legs); a cuticular bar is present near the inner claws on the first three pairs of legs. Other species reported are Echiniscus aliquantillus Grigarick, Schuster & Nelson 1983; Minibiotus intermedius (Plate 1888); Macrobiotus coronatus De Barros 1942; Macrobiotus danielae Pilato, Binda, Napolitano & Moncada 2001, and Astatumen bartosi Weglarska 1959.  相似文献

A total of eleven species of tardigrades from Taiwan are reported in this article. They belong to two classes, three orders, four families, and ten genera. Ten species are new records for Taiwan and one is new to science. Doryphoribius taiwanus sp. nov. is similar to Dor. mariae , but differs from it by larger body size, by conspicuous tubercles on the lateral side and dorsal sides of the body, by lacking gibbosities and undulations, by a narrower buccal tube, and by longer claws.  相似文献

A new freshwater tardigrade species, Pseudobiotus spinifer sp. nov., is described from the sand bottom of Nakdong River, South Korea. The new species is most similar to Pseudobiotus vladimiri from Biwa Lake, Japan, but differs from it by having small accessory points ending in the center of the primary branches of all claws, relatively longer claws and macroplacoids, and well developed cuticular spines/spicules over most of the dorsal and lateral surfaces of the body. Pseudobiotus vladimiri is redescribed on the basis of the holotype. A revised key to the species of the genus Pseudobiotus is also given.  相似文献

The egg capsule of Isohypsibius granulifer granulifer Thulin 1928 (Eutardigrada: Hypsibiidae) is composed of two shells: the thin vitelline envelope and the multilayered chorion. The process of the formation of the egg shell begins in middle vitellogenesis. The I. g. granulifer vitelline envelope is of the primary type (secreted by the oocyte), but the chorion should be regarded as a mixed type: primary (secreted by the oocyte), and secondary (produced by the cells of gonad wall). During early choriogenesis, the parts of the chorion are produced and then connected into a permanent layer. The completely developed chorion consists of three layers: (1) the inner, medium electron dense layer; (2) the middle labyrinthine layer; (3) the outer, medium electron dense layer. After the formation of the chorion, a vitelline envelope is secreted by the oocyte.  相似文献

In this article we describe a new Paramacrobiotus species of the areolatus group by means of integrative taxonomy. Together with the detailed morphological and morphometric data (obtained from light and scanning electron microscopy) we also provide DNA sequences of four universal molecular markers used in tardigrade taxonomy (three nDNA fragments: 18S rRNA, 28S rRNA, ITS-2, and one mtDNA fragment: COI). The animals of Paramacrobiotus lachowskae sp. nov. are similar to several species of the areolatus complex and the eggshell ornamentation is similar to that of two species of the richtersi group. Therefore, the new species can be easily distinguished from the areolatus group species by egg morphology (dome-like, wrinkled processes with long flexible spines/filaments covered by fine short hairs) and from species of the richtersi complex by the absence of the microplacoid. Paramacrobiotus lachowskae sp. nov. is the 43rd species reported from Colombia and fifth Paramacrobiotus species from this South American country.

Five species of tardigrades were extracted from a sample of sediment from a rain gutter. Four of these, the heterotardigrade Echiniscus testudo and the eutardigrades Milnesium tardigradum, Ramazzottius oberhaeuseri , and probably Macrobiotus cf. sandrae are typical of xerophilous habitats. The fifth species, Ramazzottius varieornatus sp. nov. , is new to science, and it can be readily distinguished from the others of the same genus by egg shell morphology, placoids and the type of cuticle.  相似文献

Spirobrachia orkneyensis sp. nov. is described from the Orkney Trench to the east of the South Orkney Islands from a depth of 6130–6420 m. It differs from the congeneric species S. grandis (Ivanov 1952) and S. leospira (Gureeva 1975) in the structure of the tube, i.e. shorter segmental collars, peculiarities of their arrangement throughout the tube, and multi-layered, light-coloured tube wall with wrinkles in its inner layers. Also, the wings of the spermatophores of the new species are much larger than those of the two other species of the genus, while most other size characteristics, including the length of the spermatophores, the size of the cuticular plaques, the number of the tentacles and the diameter of the tube, are intermediate between those of S. grandis and S. leospira. A key to the genera and species of the family Spirobrachiidae is provided. Accepted: 31 January 2000  相似文献

We describe three new species of the genus Gromia from bathyal and abyssal depths in the Weddell Sea. The new species are characterized by a combination of morphological and molecular criteria. All three species possess a distinct oral capsule and a layer of ‘honeycomb membranes’, which form the inner part of the organic test wall. Both these features are typical of gromiids. Their identification as gromiids is confirmed by analyses of partial small subunit ribosomal DNA (SSU rDNA) gene sequences. Gromia marmorea sp. nov. is a rounded species with a prominent oral capsule and a characteristically mottled appearance. In Gromia melinus sp. nov. , the test surface exhibits a polygonal pattern of ridges, with a layer of clay particles coating the surface between the ridges. Gromia winnetoui sp. nov. represents an elongate morphotype in which the organic test is enclosed within an agglutinated case, a feature previously unknown in gromiids. Phylogenetic analysis using the maximum‐likelihood method revealed that all three species form distinct clades, reflecting the morphological differences among Weddell Sea species, as well as between deep‐water Southern Ocean Gromia and previously described gromiids. © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2009, 157 , 451–469.  相似文献

A new species of sea anemone in the genus Hormathia, is described and illustrated based on forty-two specimens collected during the Polarstern cruises ANT XV/3 and ANT XVII/3 in the Weddell Sea. The main features of the new taxon are the crown of flattened and hooked tubercles at the distal end of the scapus, the regular arrangement of pointed tubercles along the column and the cnidom. The new species shares the pointed tubercles, at least in the upper part of the scapus, with two other species of Hormathia in the southern hemisphere: Hormathia spinosa Hertwig 1882 and H. pectinata Hertwig 1882 Received in revised form: 27 December 2000 Electronic Publication  相似文献

A new species of semiterrestrial eutardigrade, Hypsibius stiliferus, is described from Sakhalin Island, Far East Russia. The new species is distinguished from its congeners by having an irregular, polygonal or subtriangular dorsal sculpture, which increases in size posteriorly, two granular macroplacoids, and a cuticular bar near the base of posterior claw 4, and by lacking a microplacoid and septulum. It is currently known from its type locality and several other localities in northern and southern Sakhalin Island. This is the first report concerning tardigrades from Sakhalin Island.  相似文献

Sphaeralcyon shackletonisp. nov. and Sphaeralcyon scottisp. nov. are described and illustrated from material collected at the Scotia Sea and Weddell Sea on the Polarstern cruises ANT XIX/3 (ANDEEP-I), ANT XIX/5 (LAMPOS), and ANT XXI/2 (BENDEX). With the discovery of Sphaeralcyon shackletoni and S. scotti, three species are now known in the genus Sphaeralcyon, all them reported from the Southern Ocean. The diagnosis of the genus has been slightly modified to accommodate some of the characters of the new species.  相似文献
