When grown in a glasshouse during spring or autumn field bean (Vicia faba minor) seedlings infected with seed-borne broad bean stain virus (BBSV) or Echtes Ackerbohnenmosaik-Virus (EAMV) usually showed symptoms on some leaves within 4 wk of emergence. Symptoms caused by each virus were indistinguishable. The viruses were transmitted as often through unblemished seeds as through seeds with necrotic patches or stains on the seed coat, and sometimes as often through large as through small seeds. Soaking seeds for 24 h in solutions of 8-azaguanine or polyacrylic acid did not decrease transmission. Both viruses were detected in nearly mature seeds by inoculation to Phaseolus vulgaris but neither virus was detected in fully ripened seeds by inoculation or serological tests. The percentage of seeds from field plots that produced infected seedlings when sown in a glasshouse was closely related to the percentage of parent plants that showed symptoms of BBSV and/or EAMV at the end of flowering. The relationship seemed similar in different cultivars. On average EAMV was transmitted through more seeds than BBSV, probably because more parent plants were infected with EAMV. Inspection of seed crops for symptoms of BBSV and EAMV at the seedling stage and again at the end of flowering is probably the most practicable way of identifying progeny seed lots with little or no infection.  相似文献

Subterranean clover mottle sobemovirus (SCMV) was transmitted by manual inoculation of sap to 27 cultivars belonging to three sub-species of subterranean clover. The virus readily infected systemically all inoculated plants of five susceptible cultivars of ssp. subterraneum. Ten others showed partial resistance as not all infected plants developed systemic infection; cold winter conditions further delayed or prevented systemic movement in four of them. Two cultivars of spp. brachycalycinum and four of spp. yanninicum failed to develop systemic infection following inoculation and were considered highly resistant. Resistance to SCMV in three of the spp. yanninicum was further confirmed by the failure to establish detectable primary infections in most of the inoculated leaves. Moreover, when the four ssp. yanninicum cultivars were graft-inoculated with SCMV, systemic infection eventually developed in them but the virus concentration was low. SCMV was also transmitted by manual inoculation of sap to a further 23 species of Trifolium, Medicago or Pisum. Three species were non-hosts, five were infected only in inoculated leaves and 18 others developed systemic infection in some or all plants. SCMV reached very high concentrations and was stable in subterranean clover sap. It was transmitted experimentally between subterranean clover plants by brushing infected leaves against healthy ones and in swards was readily transmitted by the trampling and grazing of sheep, but only poorly by mowing. Seed transmission of SCMV to seedlings of five cultivars of subterranean clover was low (0–0.12%). SCMV was not transmitted by Myzus persicae.  相似文献

Combined infection of cowpea seedlings (c. v. ‘California Blackeye”) by cowpea mosaic virus (CPMV) and Fusarium oxysporum induced greater losses in leaf area, fresh and dry weights than infection by either pathogen alone. The growth of seedlings infected by F. oxysporum f. sp. tracheiphilum was less than that of comparable seedlings infected by F. oxysporum f. sp. phaseoli. The virus infectivity of extracts of the trifoliate leaves of dual-infected plants was significantly higher than that of comparable extracts from the leaves of plants singly infected with CPMV. The nature of the effects of multiple infection in cowpea is discussed.  相似文献

A significant reduction in the growth parameters viz., plant height, number of tillers, number of productive tillers, leaves, leaf area, 1000 grain weight and grain yield were observed in the mottle streak virus infected finger millet plants compared to healthy finger millet plants. The germination and vigour of seedlings from the seeds of infected plants were reduced. Physiological changes in finger millet as a result of virus infection were investigated. The chlorophyll pigments ‘a’ and ‘b’ as well as total chlorophyll were reduced due to mottle streak infection. The virus infection led to increased total sugar, starch, soluble protein and phenol contents. The mineral metabolism of infected plants showed a reduction in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, calcium and iron.  相似文献

Endophytes play an important role in ecological and evolutionary processes in plants and have marked economic value. Seed‐transmitted fungal endophytes are conventionally regarded as mutualistic symbionts, but their fitness consequences for the offspring of the host are not clear. Puccinellia distans infected with the fungus Epichloë typhina (E+) produces seeds that are several times smaller than normal (E?). This observation suggests that the E+ seedlings face a developmental disadvantage. Our growth chamber experiments compared the germination rates of the small E+ and large E? seeds of P. distans and examined the biomass allocation of seedlings to roots and shoots. The E+ seedlings germinated more slowly and maintained shorter shoots and a smaller root biomass for 30–50 days after sowing. Despite this disadvantage, the E+ plants more quickly increased their total size, attaining a larger shoot and whole‐plant biomass. The shoot:root biomass ratio increased more rapidly through time in the E+ seedlings, attaining a value nine times higher in the E+ than the E? group 50 days after sowing. Such differences between the E+ and E? seedlings were not explained by the growth allometry between shoots and roots. The seedlings of P. distans infected with the Epichloë endophyte were initially handicapped by their postponed emergence, but this disadvantage was quickly overcome by their superior growth capacity. The decrease in the relative allocation to roots may indicate that endophytes increase the performance of roots as resource‐acquiring organs and/or reduce the role of roots in protection against herbivores.  相似文献

High performance liquid chromatography analysis of different parts of Sclerotium rolfsii-infected and healthy seedlings of chickpea (Cicer arietinum) was carried out to examine the status of phenolic compounds. Three major peaks that appeared consistently were identified as gallic, vanillic and ferulic acids. Gallic acid concentrations were increased in the leaves and stems of infected plants compared to healthy ones. Vanillic acid detected in stems and leaves of healthy seedlings was not detected in infected seedlings. There was a significant increase of ferulic acid in those stem portions located above the infected collar region compared to minimal amounts in the roots of healthy seedlings. In vitro studies of ferulic acid showed significant antifungal activity against S. rolfsii. Complete inhibition of mycelial growth was observed with 1000 g of ferulic acid/ml. Lower concentrations (250, 500 and 750 g/ml) were also inhibitory and colony growth was compact in comparison with the fluffy growth of normal mycelium. Higher amounts of phenolics were found in the stems and leaves of S. rolfsii-infected seedlings in comparison to the healthy ones. A role for ferulic acid in preventing infections by S. rolfsii in the stems and leaves of chickpea plants above the infection zone is therefore feasible.  相似文献

Broad bean stain virus (BBSV) and Echtes Ackerbohnenmosaik-Virus (EAMV) were detected in the seed coat and embryo sac fluid of immature seeds from infected field beans (Viciafaba minor) by inoculation to Phaseolus vulgaris; BBSV was also detected in immature embryos. The proportion of seeds infected with either virus decreased during maturation. The viruses were transmitted to seedlings as often through fully ripened seeds from which the seed coats had been removed as through intact seeds. Both viruses were detected in pollen from infected plants, but in glasshouse tests only BBSV was transmitted through pollen to seeds. Delaying fertilization in plants infected with BBSV or EAMV seemed not to affect seed transmission of either virus. In glasshouse tests BBSV was transmitted more often through seeds from plants that were inoculated before flowering than during flowering, and was not transmitted through seeds from plants inoculated after flowering; EAMV was transmitted only through seeds from plants inoculated before flowering. In tests on seed from naturally infected plants BBSV was transmitted more often through seeds from plants that developed symptoms before flowering than during flowering. Both viruses were seed-borne in all cultivars tested and there was no marked difference in the frequency of transmission of either virus among the spring-sown cultivars most common in Britain. Further evidence is provided that the environment of sugar-beet seedlings, or growth substances applied to seedlings, continues to influence growth when the plants are later in other environments. Sugar-beet seeds were germinated at 20 °C in 8, 16 or 24 h photoperiods of constant light intensity, i.e. with different amounts of total radiation. When the seedlings had two leaves (15–18 days old) they were transferred to large pots in the glasshouse. Some seedlings were treated with (2-chloroethyltrimethylammonium chloride) either sprayed on the leaves or applied to the soil, at different times. The treatments affected areas of individual leaves throughout the growing period; plants raised in 24 h photoperiod had the largest leaves, and those in 8 h photoperiod the smallest. Consequently, 24 h plants had most dry matter and 8 h plants least. Plants given most radiation produced leaves fastest and CCC applied early increased the rate, but as the leaves were smaller, except late in 1967, and died sooner, the leaf area duration was less and so yields were less. CCC applied later did not affect leaf production. There was no interaction between amount of radiation and CCC treatment. Twenty-four hour plants had the greatest net assimilation rate (E) early. CCC decreased E early, but increased it later and more when sprayed on the leaves than when applied to the soil. Some factor, possibly pot size, eventually restricted growth and probably diminished the effect of the treatments applied to the seedlings.  相似文献

为阐明香蕉枯萎病发病机制,研究了尖孢镰刀菌侵染后,香蕉植株中几种对尖孢镰刀菌生长有显著作用的物质(氨基酸、有机羧酸、酚酸)种类和含量的变化。结果表明:(1)病原菌侵染后,伤害逐渐加剧,株高和生物量显著下降。(2)病原菌侵染后,叶片氨基酸总量显著升高,其中丝氨酸、缬氨酸、组氨酸、异亮氨酸和亮氨酸增幅较大,病原菌侵染16 d,其含量分别为侵染前的7.1、6.2、4.4、3.5和2.3倍;而根氨基酸总量开始显著降低,差异逐渐变小。(3)叶片有机羧酸酸含量在病原菌侵染后显著增加,而在根中显著降低。侵染植株叶片中草酸、柠檬酸、苹果酸、琥珀酸和延胡索酸含量分别是未侵染植株叶片的2.6、1.6、1.9、1.8和2.3倍;根中草酸、柠檬酸、苹果酸、琥珀酸和延胡索酸含量分别是未侵染植株的81%、42%、44%、28%和59%。(4)病原菌侵染后,植株叶片和根中酚酸含量都显著升高。叶片中阿魏酸、肉桂酸和水杨酸含量分别是未侵染叶片的2.9、1.7和2.9倍;而根中对羟基苯甲酸和丁香酸含量分别是未侵染根的4.3和1.5倍。研究结果表明,尖孢镰刀菌侵染后,植物与病原菌的相互作用使得植物体内抑菌物质和促菌物质都会相应的增加,植株对病害有一定的抗性,但促菌物质种类和含量较高最终使得感病植株发病。  相似文献

Apparently normal pea seeds from pods bearing lesions of Mycosphaerella pinodes were often internally infected with the fungus. When infected seeds were sown in sterile grit almost all the seedlings showed disease lesions, at or below soil level, 4–6 weeks after sowing. Seed infected with Ascochyta pisi gave only 40% infection of seedlings: these showed lesions on the stem and first two leaves within 4 weeks of sowing. Infection of seeds by both pathogens could be eradicated by soaking the seeds for 24 hr. in 0.2% suspensions of thiram or captan at 30d?C. In laboratory or greenhouse tests these treatments did not check germination, but in the field the captan treatment reduced emergence. The treated seeds became fully imbibed but could be dried and stored: the thiram treatment was used for semi-commercial treatment of quantities of seed up to 3 cwt.  相似文献

This study investigated the natural occurrence of Verticillium dahliae (Kleb.) infection in pumpkin (Cucurbita pepo L.) seed. The mean incidence of infection was found to be 21.0%. Isolates recovered from seeds were pathogenic to pumpkin (cultivar ‘Jamaican squash’). Surface sterilization by immersion in 0.6% sodium hypochlorite for 20 min eradicated V. dahliae from infected pumpkin seeds without affecting germinability. Plating of seed components revealed that the fungus was present in the seed coat but not in the embryo or cotyledons. In a growing‐on test, 25% of 6‐week‐old plants grown from untreated seeds were infected. Germination and production of normal seedlings were unaffected by V. dahliae infection of seeds. Verticillium dahliae in pumpkin seed was found to be external and transmissible to plants. The findings of this study are important in devising disease control strategies.  相似文献

以根结线虫侵染的文冠果一年生苗木为材料,观察分析苗木根系的形态和显微结构,植株生长发育以及主要矿质养分在苗木中的分布特性,并分析不同矿质元素与线虫侵染的关联关系,以揭示根结线虫对文冠果苗木生长发育的影响机制。结果表明:(1)受根结线虫侵染的文冠果苗木根系形成根结,依据根结发生程度分为0(对照,正常植株)、2、3、4级;与对照相比,具有根结的文冠果苗木根系解剖结构特征主要表现为皮层相对较厚,木质部排列扭曲,导管较少,射线数目较少且分布不均匀;韧皮细胞内含物明显较多;多个巨细胞及细胞空腔主要存在于韧皮部。(2)具根结的苗木株高和地径较对照均增加,且株高增幅达显著水平(P<0.05)。(3)具根结苗木根、茎、叶部位的N、P含量均较对照下降,根部降幅达显著水平(P<0.05),其中具2~4级根结的根部N含量分别较对照显著下降7.8%、16.0%和29.5%,P含量分别显著下降15.6%、7.1%和43.3%;根部Fe含量、Zn含量显著上升,2~4级根结根系中Fe含量较对照分别增加1.56倍、0.81倍和3倍,Zn含量分别增加1.11倍、1.56倍和1.78倍;具3和4级根结的苗木根系中K含量较对照显著增加(P<0.05),具2和4级根结的苗木叶片中K含量较对照分别显著下降61.5%和47.0%。(4)苗木根部、茎部N元素含量对于根结线虫侵染的响应最明显,且其含量随侵染程度的增大而降低,叶部Mg元素含量与根结线虫侵染率、K元素含量与整株苗木生物量均呈显著负相关关系(P<0.05)。该研究为根结线虫对文冠果苗木养分吸收利用及运转的影响提供了一定的理论依据。  相似文献

Activities of defence‐related proteins (β‐1,3‐glucanases, chitinases and peroxidases) and concentrations of total soluble phenolics were measured in roots and leaves of non‐infected and infected plants to investigate the response of different citrus rootstock genotypes to the root rot pathogen Phytophthora palmivora Butler. Infection with the pathogen increased concentrations of total proteins, total phenolics and β‐1,3‐glucanase activity in roots of all genotypes, and increases were associated with the extent of root mass reductions and thus susceptibility of the plants. Root chitinase and root peroxidase levels were slightly reduced or unaltered upon infection. β‐1,3‐Glucanase activity was also elevated in leaves of infected plants, but increases did not differ between tolerant and susceptible rootstocks. Effects of root infection on leaves were typically the reverse of effects on roots for chitinase‐ and peroxidase levels and more pronounced in susceptible rootstock genotypes. Although differences in enzyme expression were observed between susceptible and tolerant citrus seedlings, effects were usually associated with disease progression, and not with resistance to P. palmivora. It is suggested that increased activities of the proteins and soluble phenolics studied are not implicated in the primary defence to Phytophthora root diseases, but may contribute to the inhibition of the pathogen during infection in tolerant citrus.  相似文献

Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) seeds were soaked in aqueous 10−4 M dihydroquercetin (DHQ) to examine its influence on seed germination and further growth of seedlings under optimal soil watering and flooding conditions. The adaptive potential of the plants was estimated by the content of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARs) and the activity of ascorbate peroxidase (AsP). High-grade seeds were germinated evenly under (−DHQ)- and (+DHQ)-treatments. Low-grade seeds soaked in DHQ, showed no mold and twofold germination rate in comparison with the same seeds soaked in water. The seedlings grown from the similarly germinated seeds did not differ from each other in the shoot growth, independent of the DHQ-pretreatment. The root growth was higher in DHQ-pretreated plants. Soil flooding suppressed the shoot and root growth rates in non-pretreated and DHQ-pretreated plants, however TBARs content was lower in the roots and leaves of (+DHQ)-seedlings as compared to the (−DHQ)-ones. The activity of AsP increased more significantly in the (+DHQ)-plants. The ratio between TBARs content and the AsP activity was lower in the leaves of (+DHQ)-plants both under optimal soil conditions and flooding. Thus, the treatment of low-grade barley seeds with DHQ protects the seeds against mold and increases adaptive potential of the seedlings.  相似文献

Summary Interactions between a Chilean mistletoe, quintral (Tristerix tetrandrus, Loranthaceae) and its potential host plants were studied at a site with mediterranean type climate. The results show that the distribution of T. tetrandrus is related to the behavior of avian dispersers, which feed on its fruit, and evacuate the seeds at random in the field, but the distribution is also influenced bymicroenvironmental conditions, survival of seedlings is hampered at drier locations. The infection capacity of the seeds is increased after birds have eliminated the fruit coat.Survival of T. tetrandrus seeds differed depending on the species to which they were attached experimentally. Seeds germinated, and plants developed on Colliguaya odorifera and Kageneckia oblonga, previously reported as susceptible to infection. Survival was significantly higher on C. odorifera, although in the field it is infected less frequently than K. oblonga. In species on which no T. tetrandrus has been previously reported, resistance to infection might be ascribed to different mechanisms: in Quillaja saponaria, differentiation of cork layers apparently prevents penetration by haustoria; in Lithraea caustica haustoria enter the cortex and phloem, but no further development ensues. K. oblonga seldom bears more than one T. tetrandrus plant. Experimental inoculations showed that significantly more seeds developed into plants on K. oblonga individuals not previously infected with quintral, suggesting that they become resistant to infection.  相似文献

Comparative studies were made of the responses of resistant and of susceptible Gem tomato plants to infection by Verticillium albo-atrum. When inoculated through roots, there were striking differences in their responses. In susceptible plants, the foliar symptoms and amount of mycelium in the stem increased rapidly for some time. Then the mycelium started to disappear from the stem; this was accompanied by a check to the normal progress of symptoms, and by the formation of tyloses. In resistant plants, a limited invasion of the root and lower stem was accompanied by rapid and extensive tylosis. The mycelium soon disappeared from the stem and the plant then recovered from the initially mild symptoms. There was an inverse relationship between the amount of mycelium and the extent of tylosis in infected plants. The growth of susceptible plants was markedly reduced by infection. Total leaf area was much less because the newly produced leaves did not expand normally. The root system in infected plants was smaller because there were many fewer tertiary roots. In resistant plants infection stimulated growth. Tomato cuttings inoculated with conidia reacted similarly to root-inoculated plants. Hyphae grew well in the vascular system of susceptible cuttings whereas in resistant cuttings the pathogen started to grow but soon disappeared. Detached leaves of susceptible plants, inoculated through cut ends, wilted more than did leaves from resistant plants. It is suggested that resistance is mainly of the active type that develops after infection.  相似文献

A new disease of lemongrass (Cymbopogon flexuosus) caused by Balansia sclerotica was observed in India. The systemic infection induced deformed inflorescences and grassy-shoot symptoms as a result of inhibition of growth of axillary buds and shortening of internodes. A number of ascostromata of the pathogen were produced on inflorescences of infected plants. Microscopic examination of infected host tissue revealed the presence of abundant endophytic mycelia. B. sclerotica was isolated from ascostromata and apical meristems of infected plants and its pathogenicity to lemongrass was experimentally established in three out of eighty-two seedlings raised from seeds of inoculated plants. This report is one of the rare achievements in establishing the pathogenicity of fungal endophytes experimentally.  相似文献

The activities of chitinase, β-1,3-glucanase, peroxidase and phenylalanine ammonia lyase, constitutive and induced by Stagonospora nodorum were examined in the 10 – 14 day old seedlings of three triticale and two wheat cultivars under controlled environmental conditions and in flag leaves of two triticale cultivars in the field. Two S. nodorum isolates of different virulence were used. Both the constitutive and induced activities in triticale and wheat depended on genotype and in triticale the effect of growth conditions was also evidenced. The constitutive activities of chitinase, β-1,3-glucanase and peroxidase were several fold lower in flag triticale leaves in plants from the field than in the seedlings, growing under controlled conditions, but induction in the infected flag leaves was significantly more pronounced. In triticale genotypic differences in the response to infection were revealed only upon inoculation by S. nodorum isolate of higher virulence. The enzymatic activities increased several fold during successive days after the infection except for phenylalanine ammonia lyase. Induction of this enzyme was only transient and the activity decreased 48 or 96 h after infection when the activities of other enzymes were rising. In flag leaves in the field this activity was differentiated only after infection with more a virulent strain. A tendency appeared in triticale seedlings for association of the resistance to the pathogen with lower enzymatic constitutive activities. This relationship became more evident in triticale infected by S. nodorum and may imply that although the investigated enzymes are certainly involved in general, non-specific defense mechanism, they do not decide on the resistance to pathogen at least in the early stages of infection and cooperate with other factors in the complex pathogen-plant interaction. One can also assume that the enzymatic activities are associated with severity of infection rather than resistance to pathogen.  相似文献

Alternaria brassicicola infection of Brassica oleracea seeds was effectively controlled by a dust application of iprodione (Rovral 50% w.P.). At 2.5 g a.i./kg the seed-borne fungus was usually eliminated from samples with up to 61.5% affected seeds (35.5% internally diseased) but higher levels of infection required increased doses for complete eradication of the fungus. The germination of healthy seeds, including samples from 7–yr-old stocks, on filter paper was unaffected by the treatment. However, the germination of diseased samples, particularly those internally infected with A. brassicicola, was improved. More seedlings emerged from iprodione treated than from untreated seeds in glasshouse soil but the differences were not significant. The application of gamma-hexachlorocyclohexane to iprodione treated seeds sown in soil did not adversely affect subsequent emergence or disease control. Disease control was maintained and germination was not affected by the treatment when treated infected seeds were stored for 2 yr at 10 °C, 50% r.h. In a field trial iprodione seed treatment reduced seedling infection in a cabbage crop grown from naturally diseased seeds (100% contaminated, 45.5% internally infected) from 5.6 to 0.04%.  相似文献

Summary Many grasses are infected by endophytic fungi that grow intercellularly in leaves, stems, and flowers and are transmitted maternally by hyphal growth into ovules and seeds. The seed biology and seedling growth of endophyte-infected and uninfected perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) and tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea) were investigated under controlled environmental conditions. The percentage of filled seeds produced by infected tall fescue was over twice of uninfected tall fescue; infected and uninfected perennial reegrass had similar percentages. Weights of seeds from infected and uninfected plants were similar in both species. Seeds from infected plants of both species exhibited a higher rate of germination than seeds from uninfected plants. Shoot growth in the greenhouse was compared by making three sequential harvests of above-ground plant parts from infected and uninfected plants of both species. Infected perennial ryegrass plants produced significantly more biomass and tillers than uninfected plants after 6 and 10 weeks of growth and significantly more biomass after 14 weeks of growth. Infected tall fescue plants produced significantly more biomass and tillers than uninfected plants after 10 and 14 weeks of growth. The physiological mechanism of enhancement of growth is not known. The results of this study suggest that infected plants may have a selective advantage in populations with uninfected members.  相似文献
