An evoked potential consisting of four postsynaptic components was recorded in the guinea-pig superior colliculus following electrical stimulation of the contralateral optic nerve. This potential was generated in response to the activation of four populations of optic nerve fibres with different conduction velocities. Current source-density analysis revealed that the two slower conducting fibre populations synapse in the upper third of the stratum griseum superficiale on dendrites whose cell bodies appear to be found in the lower part of this layer and in the stratum opticum. The two faster conducting populations synapse deeper, near the border of the stratum griseum superficiale and stratum opticum, on neurons with cell bodies that may lie towards the upper part of the stratum griseum superficiale. The locations of these postsynaptic sites correspond to the layers in which the optic nerve terminates as revealed by neuroanatomical tracing techniques. Furthermore, neurons of the shape and orientation predicted by the current source-density analysis were found in the superficial layers by using the Golgi-Cox technique.  相似文献

Evoked potentials arising in the rabbit superior colliculus in response to punctiform stimulation of the receptive field were studied. This response has only negative polarity at the focus of maximal activity and does not exhibit reversal of the potential which is a characteristic feature of the response to diffuse stimulation. The evoked potential was recorded at depths of between 0.1 and 0.9–1.0 mm from the collicular surface, corresponding to the stratum griseum superficiale. The response disappeared when the stimulating spot was shifted through 4–6° away from the optical position. It is suggested that evoked potentials to punctiform stimulation can give more complete information on the location of different synapses.A. N. Glutamate was coupled via glutaraldehyde to bovine serum albumin. The conjugate was used for raising specific anti-glutamate antibodies. The purified antibody was used for immunostaining of chick cerebellum and optic tectum. Staining was intense in the molecular layer and in cell bodies of the granule cell layer. In the optic tectum a diffuse staining was detected in the superficial layers of stratum griseum fibrosum superficiale and in cell bodies especially in the layers a and e. Large cell bodies located in the stratum griseum centrale were also stained.  相似文献

The optic tectum is a major subdivision of the visual system in reptiles. Previous studies have characterized the laminar pattern, the neuronal populations, and the afferent and efferent connections of the optic tectum in a variety of reptiles. However, little is known about the interactions that occur between neurons within the tectum. This study describes two kinds of interactions that occur between one major class of neurons, the radial cells, in the optic tectum of Pseudemys using Nissl, Golgi and electron microscopic preparations. Radial cells have somata which bear long, radially oriented apical dendrites from their upper poles and short, basal dendrites from their lower poles. They are divided into two populations on the basis of the distribution of their somata in the tectum. Deep radial cells have somata densely packed in the stratum griseum periventriculare. Their plasma membranes form casual appositions. Middle radial cells have somata scattered throughout the stratum griseum centrale and stratum fibrosum et griseum superficiale and do not contact each other. The apical dendrites of both populations of radial cells participate in vertically oriented, dendritic bundles. The plasma membranes of the dendrites in these bundles form casual appositions in the deeper tectal layers and chemical, dendrodenritic synapses within the stratum fibrosum et griseum superficiale. The synapses have clear, round synaptic vesicles and slightly asymmetric membrane densities. Thus, radial cells interact via both casual appositions and chemical synapses. These interactions suggest that radial cells may form a basic framework in the tectum. Because both populations of radial cells extend into the stratum fibrosum et griseum superficiale and stratum opticum, they may receive input from some of the same tectal afferent systems. Because the deep radial cells alone have somata and dendrites in the deep tectal layers, they may receive additional inputs that the middle radial cells do not. Neurons in the two populations interact via chemical dendrodentritic synapses, thereby forming vertically oriented modules in the tectum.  相似文献

Focal evoked potentials arising in the rabbit visual cortex in response to photic stimulation from a point source were analyzed by determination of the current source density. The response to a point stimulus arises in a circumscribed area of cortex, corresponding retinotopically to the stimulated point of the visual field and it consists of two components. The first component is created by a local current sink at a depth of 0.6 to 1.0 mm (the level of layer IV) and has a latent period of 30 msec and a peak time of 50 msec. The second component is created by a more diffuse current sink at a depth of 0.2–0.3 to 1.3–1.5 mm (levels between layers III and VI); the time to the maximum was 90–100 msec. These local sinks are regarded as active, created by depolarizing synapses. Passive current sources are concentrated around zones of active sinks. The angioarchitecture of the toad's mesencephalon is studied by scanning electron microscopy of vascular corrosion casts. The arterial supply is performed by the superior mesencephalic artery and by an artery arising from the ramus posterior of the arteria carotis cerebralis just in front of the retroin-fundibular communicating artery. The venous drainage is exerted by the vena diencephalica, the vena lateralis mesencephalis and by anterior and posterior branches of the encephaloposthypophysial portal vein. Characteristics of the mesencephalic angioarchitecture are the centrifugal direction of the blood flow, the intensive capillarization, and the formation of vascular meshworks in the region of the stratum griseum periventriculare tecti and of the stratum griseum superficiale tecti.  相似文献

Visually evoked potentials were used to determine the spatial contrast response function of the visual system and the visual acuity of the pigeon. The spatial contrast response describes the relationship between the contrast in a pattern of vertical stripes, whose luminance is a function of position, and the amplitude of the visually evoked response at various spatial frequencies for a given temporal frequency (pattern reversal frequency); it indicates how particular spatial frequencies are attenuated in the visual system. The visually evoked responses were recorded using monopolar stainless steel electrodes inserted into the stratum griseum superficiale of the optic tectum; the depth of penetration was determined on the basis of a stereotactic atlas. The stimulus patterns were generated on a video monitor placed 75 cm in front of the animal's eye perpendicular to the optic axis. The spatial contrast response function measured at 10% contrast and 0.5 Hz reversal frequency shows a peak at a spatial frequency of 0.5 c/deg, corresponding to 1 degree of visual angle, and decreases progressively at higher spatial frequencies. The high-frequency limit (cut-off frequency) for resolution of sinusoidal gratings, estimated from the contrast response function, is 15.5 c/deg, corresponding to a visual acuity of 1.9 min of arc.  相似文献

In the superior colliculus of chimpanzee, three classes of neurons can be identified by ultrastructural criteria. They are 1) marginal cells located in the stratum zonale, 2) collicular relay cells in the stratum griseum superficiale and 3) presynaptic dendrite (PSD) cells, i.e., neurons with presynaptic specializations in soma and/or dendrites. PSD cells are the smallest neurons in the stratum griseum superficiale; they have a relatively large, deeply infolded nucleus and a small rim of cytoplasm rich in free ribosomes. PSD cells are sufficiently different from the two other classes of neurons to be reliably identified at the ultrastructural level. They closely resemble presynaptic neurons as described in the lateral geniculate nucleus of other mammalian species. Presynaptic dendrites in continuity with PSD cells are rich in organelles, especially ribosomal cluster, and establish en passage contact with other dendrites. Another type of presynaptic dendrite, poor in organelles, except for bundles of microtubules, could not be traced back to its parent neuron. Homo- or heterogeneity of PSD cells is discussed. 随着海水养殖业的碳汇功能逐渐被认识和肯定,海水养殖不再单是一项经济活动,而是对环境具有正向影响的碳汇生态活动。以我国沿海9个省份为例,选取海水养殖业碳汇主要贡献的贝类和藻类海产品,并按照各自的碳汇方式对我国沿海地区2008—2015年海水养殖碳汇能力测算,进一步将9个沿海省份按照主要海域划分为渤海、黄海、东海、南海,利用LMDI模型从海水养殖的结构效应和规模效应角度分析碳汇能力的区域差异和主要影响因素。研究结果显示,黄海沿岸海水养殖碳汇能力最强,南海沿岸海水养殖的碳汇转化比例最高,规模效应与我国沿海地区海水养殖碳汇能力始终呈正相关,结构效应的作用显著但不稳定。基于上述结论,我国沿海地区碳汇养殖业应首先提升碳汇养殖技术、稳定海水养殖产量,其次注重优化养殖结构,对碳汇潜力巨大的贝类多加关注。  相似文献

Summary The retinal efferents of the catfish, Mystus vittatus, were investigated with the use of the horseradish peroxidase (HRP) technique. Most retinal fibres extended contralateral to the eye that had received HRP label, while a few fascicles projected to the ipsilateral side without decussation in the optic chiasma. The contralateral fibres projected to the suprachiasmatic nucleus, the nucleus opticus dorsolateralis, the nucleus of the posterior commissure, the nucleus geniculatus lateralis, pretectal nuclear complex, and to two layers of the optic tectum, i.e., stratum fibrosum et griseum superficiale and stratum griseum centrale. The accessory optic tract arose from the inner area of the optic tract and extended ventromedially to the accessory optic nucleus. The ipsilateral fascicles projected to almost all the above mentioned nuclei, but these projections were comparatively sparse. The ipsilateral retinal projection was restricted to the rostral tectum.  相似文献

Potentials produced in the frog thalamus by electrical stimulation of the peripheral nerves were investigated by sink and current source-density analysis. Sinks, which are viewed as potential generation sites, were located in three regions: the cell-free zone of the ventral thalamus adjoining the ventrolateral nucleus, the ventromedial and ventrolateral nuclei, and the caudal section of the dorsal thalamus. Evoked activity was recorded in individual neurons in the area of the second and third of these sinks. The first sink failed to form after section of the dorsal tracks of the spinal cord, while the remaining two only appeared after a considerably extended latency. It is suggested that nuclei of the ventral and caudal sections of the dorsal thalamus receive somatic impulses through the systems connected with the dorsal as well as the ventrolateral columns of the spinal cord. The direct projections of the primordial nuclei of dorsal columns may be involved in afferentation the ventral thalamus.I. M. The postnatal development of the occipito-tectal pathway was studied by making single injections of 3H-leucine into the striate cortex of rats ranging in age from newborn to postnatal day 50 (P50). After these injections, the earliest age at which autoradiographic labeling was found in the ipsilateral superior colliculus (SC) was P4. Two main stages were recognized in the development of the occipito-tectal pathway. In the first stage, from P4 to P9, the silver grain pattern over the SC was suggestive of axonal labeling. The label was tangentially and radially exuberant involving the prospective stratum opticum, the adjacent part of the stratum griseum superficiale and also the strata intermediale. A rough topographic order in the projection existed at least from P6. The second stage, from P9 to P17, was characterized by the ingrowth of axonal arbors into the collicular strata superficiale and by the disappearance of the tangentially exuberant projections. Quantitative estimations of the degree of tangential exuberancy of the projection showed that it underwent a reduction of almost 50% from P7 to P17. By P17, the radial and tangential patterns of termination of the occipito-tectal pathway appeared virtually mature. No projections to the contralateral SC were observed at any age. The results of the present study indicate that the mature topographic pattern of the occipito-tectal projection is attained through two separate steps which may involve a number of different mechanisms. In the first step, occipital axons grow orderly -although in an exuberant manner- towards their roughly appropriate tectal locations, remaining to a large extent confined to the collicular white matter. In the second step, further refinement of the topographic map is achieved both by selective growing of terminal arbors into tangentially restricted regions of the tectal surface, and, by retraction of tangentially exuberant projections.  相似文献

Stem carbohydrate reserves, in ryegrass grown for seed, mayplay a vital role in maintaining seed growth, especially underconditions of limited photosynthesis. Little is known concerningthe processes controlling stem carbohydrate utilization andpartitioning in ryegrass with respect to seed growth. The objectiveof this investigation was to determine detailed post-anthesischanges in stem and spikelet carbohydrates as affected by modificationof source and sink strength. Source-sink relations were alteredby imposing detillering or detillering-defoliation treatmentsat anthesis. Patterns of carbohydrate distribution of the ryegrassstem were different, both among positions within the stem andwith age. Stem carbohydrates accumulated during early stagesof seed growth and then declined as seeds matured. Reducingsugars comprised only a small fraction of the stem's total watersoluble carbohydrates. Detillering induced the formation ofnew tiller sinks, thus increasing sink strength and reversingthe carbohydrate gradient from spikelet (seed) sinks to newtiller sinks. Defoliation, combined with detillering, decreasedsource strength by reducing total stem carbohydrate. In controlplants, carbohydrate levels appeared adequate to support maximumseed set, whereas conditions for reduced carbohydrate levels,resulting from detillering or detillering plus defoliation,lowered seed set. Results suggest that under conditions of limitedsource strength (e.g. reduced photosynthetic capacity), thestem plays a major role in partitioning assimilates to compensatefor sink demand. Current and past land use practices are critical in determining the distribution and sizeof global terrestrial carbon (C) sources and sinks. Although fossil fuel emissions dominate the an-thropogenic perturbation of the global C cycle, land use still drives the largest portion of anthropo-genic emissions in a number of tropical regions of Asia. The size of the emission flux owing to landuse change is still the biggest uncertainty in the global C budget. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reported a flux term of 1.7 PgC·a~(-1) for 1990-1995 but more recent es-timates suggest the magnitude of this source may be only of 0.96 PgC·a~(-1) for the 1990s. In add-ition, current and past land use practices are now thought to contribute to a large degree to the northern hemisphere terrestrial sink, and are the dominant driver for some regional sinks. However,mechanisms other than land use change need to be invoked in order to explain the inferred C sink in the tropics. Potential candidates are the carbon dioxide (CO_2) fertilization and climate change;fertilization due to nitrogen (N) deposition is believed to be small or nil. Although the potential formanaging C sinks is limited, improved land use management and new land uses such as refores-tation and biomass fuel cropping, can further enhance current terrestrial C sinks. Best manage-ment practices in agriculture alone could sequester 0.4-0.8 PgC per year in soils if implemented globally. New methodologies to ensure verification and permanency of C sequestration need to be developed.  相似文献

This study reports a combined scalp current density (SCD) and dipole model analysis of the N1 wave of the auditory event-related potentials evoked by 1 kHz tone bursts delivered every second. The SCD distributions revealed: (i) a sink and a source of current reversing in polarity at the inferotemporal level of each hemiscalp, compatible with neural generators in and around the supratemporal plane of the auditory cortex, as previously reported; and (ii) bilateral current sinks over frontal areas. Consistently, dynamic dipole model analysis showed that generators in and outside the auditory cortex are necessary to account for the observed current fields between 65 and 140 msec post stimulus. The frontal currents could originate from the motor cortex, the supplementary motor area and/or the cingulate gyrus. The dissociation of an exogenous, obligatory frontal component from the sensory-specific response in the auditory N1 suggests that parallel processes served by distinct neural systems are activated during acoustic stimulation. Implications for recent models of auditory processing are discussed.  相似文献

The distribution of VIP-like perikarya and fibers was determined throughout the chick brain. The most rostral immunoreactive perikarya were found to be cerebrospinal fluid-contacting neurons in the pars medialis of the lateral septal organ. Additional data were presented supporting the idea that the lateral septal organ is another circumventricular organ within the brain of birds (Kuenzel and van Tienhoven 1982). A large group of immunoreactive perikarya was found in the lateral hypothalamic area and appeared continuous with immunoreactive neurons in the anterior medial and ventromedial hypothalamic nuclei (n). A few perikarya were located in the paraventricular hypothalamic n. A number of immunoreactive neurons were found within and about the infundibular and inferior hypothalamic n., none however was immunoreactive cerebrospinal fluid-contacting neurons. Immunoreactive perikarya were found predominantly in laminae 10–11 of the stratum griseum et fibrosum superficiale. A few scattered perikarya were found ventromedial to the n. tegmenti pedunculo-pontinus pars compacta and locus ceruleus. Some of the immunoreactivity was unusual, being very homogeneous within the cell body with little evidence of the material in the axon or dendrites. Perikarya were found in the central gray, n. intercollicularis, and area ventralis of Tsai. The most caudal structure showing immunoreactive neurons was the n. reticularis paragigantocellularis lateralis. Brain areas containing the most abundant immunoreactive fibers, listed from the rostral-most location, were found in the ventromedial region of the lobus parolfactorius and the lateral septal n. Continuing caudally, there were immunoreactive fibers within the periventricular hypothalamic n.; some of the fibers were found to travel for some distance parallel to the third ventricle. Dense immunoreactive fibers were found in the tractus cortico-habenularis et cortico-septalis, medial habenular n. and posterior and dorsal n. of the archistriatum. A number of areas had what appeared to be baskets of immunoreactive fibers (perhaps immunoreactive terminals) surrounding non-reactive perikarya. Brain areas containing terminals included the piriform cortex, area ventralis of Tsai, interpeduncular n., and specific regions of the stratum griseum et fibrosum superficiale. A very dense immunoreactivity occurred within the external zone of the median eminence, the dorsolateral parabrachial n., and n. tractus solitarii. Vasoactive intestinal polypeptide appears to be a useful peptide for defining the neuroanatomical constituents of the visceral forebrain in birds.  相似文献

Theoretical and empirical studies have shown that enemy–victim interactions in spatially homogenous environments can exhibit diverging oscillations which result in the extinction of one or both species. For enemy–victim models with overlapping generations, we investigate the dynamical implications of spatial heterogeneity created by enemy-free sinks or victimless sinks. An enemy-free sink is a behavioral, physiological or ecological state that reduces or eliminates the victim's vulnerability to the enemy but cannot sustain the victim population. For victims that move in an ideal-free manner, we prove that the inclusion of an enemy-free sink shifts the population dynamics from diverging oscillations to stable oscillations. During these stable oscillations, the victim disperses in an oscillatory manner between the enemy-free sink and the enemy-occupied patch. Enemy-free sinks with lower mortality rates exhibit oscillations with smaller amplitudes and longer periods. A victimless sink, on the other hand, is a behavioral, physiological or ecological state in which the enemy has limited (or no) access to its victims. For enemies that move in an ideal-free manner, we prove that victimless sinks also stabilize diverging oscillations. Simulations suggest that suboptimal behavior due to information gathering or learning limitations amplify oscillations for systems with enemy-free sinks and dampen oscillations for systems with victimless sinks. These results illustrate that the coupling of a sink created by unstable enemy–victim interactions and a sink created by unsuitable environmental conditions can result in population persistence at the landscape level.  相似文献
