This commentary responds to the previously published Journal of Industrial Ecology article “The Employment Footprints of Nations: Uncovering Master‐Servant Relationships” by Alsamawi and colleagues. Their article uses extended input‐output analysis to calculate employment and income footprints and, consequently, quantifies and provides an analysis of the average wages embodied in consumption of countries in comparison with the wages received by domestic workers. In effect, Alsamawi and colleagues show the extent of inequality in labor income, especially between developed and developing economies, traced throughout the global supply chains, but ignore the price differentials existing between countries in their discussion of the welfare implications of global trade on workers. This commentary contends the appropriateness of adjusting nominal compensation of workers to purchasing power parity (PPP) when undertaking global comparisons that pertain to well‐being and recalculates the employment footprints and income footprints of nations with PPP adjustment. The price adjustment in this work is intended to show a more accurate depiction of the disparity among workers of different nations when their labor incomes are deflated by the index price of consumption goods in their country. Using observations covering 189 countries and 14,839 sectors for the period 1990–2011, the results of the adjustment reveal that the ratio of domestic wages to foreign wages paid in support of a country's consumption (footprint wages) tends to be underestimated for labor‐exporting countries (developing economies with relatively cheaper consumption goods) and overestimated for labor‐importing countries (developed economies with more expensive consumption goods), thus demonstrating, generally, relatively less income inequality than previously exposed.  相似文献

We explore relationships among BMI variation, wealth, and inequality in the 19th century US. There was an inverse relationship between BMI and average state-level wealth and a small, inverse relationship with wealth inequality. After controlling for wealth and inequality, farmers had greater BMI values than workers in other occupations, and blacks had greater BMI values because of nutritional deprivation in utero.  相似文献

Sources associated with 19th century stature variation have been widely considered. Using US state prison records and robust statistics, this paper illustrates that 19th century US white statures were positively associated with a broad combination of wealth, equality, and environmental characteristics. Individuals from geographic areas characterized by low wealth and high inequality had shorter statures. After controlling for various factors, direct sunlight – the primary source of vitamin D – was also positively associated with stature. After controlling for wealth, inequality, and insolation, farmers were taller than workers in other occupations. These wealth, insolation, and socioeconomic relationships are significant across the stature distribution.  相似文献

Background

Burnout is a syndrome of emotional exhaustion, cynicism and reduced professional efficacy, which can result from long-term work stress. Although the burnout level is high among iron and steel workers, little is known concerning burnout among iron and steel worker. This study aimed to evaluate the burnout and to explore its associated internal and external factors in iron and steel workers.

Methods

A cross-sectional survey was conducted in iron and steel workers at the Anshan iron-steel complex in Anshan, northeast China. Self-administered questionnaires were distributed to 1,600 workers, and finally 1,300 questionnaires were returned. Burnout was measured using the Chinese version of the Maslach Burnout Inventory-General Survey (MBI-GS). Effort-reward imbalance (ERI), perceived organizational support (POS), and psychological capital (PsyCap) were measured anonymously. A hierarchical regression model was applied to explore the internal and external factors associated with burnout.

Results

Mean MBI-GS scores were 13.11±8.06 for emotional exhaustion, 6.64±6.44 for cynicism, and 28.96±10.39 for professional efficacy. Hierarchical linear regression analysis showed that ERI and POS were the most powerful predictors for emotional exhaustion and cynicism, and PsyCap was the most robust predictor for high professional efficacy.

Conclusions

Chinese iron and steel workers have a high level of burnout. Burnout might be associated with internal and external factors, including ERI, POS, and PsyCap. Further studies are recommended to develop an integrated model including both internal and external factors, to reduce the level of ERI, and improve POS and workers’ PsyCap, thereby alleviating the level of burnout among iron and steel workers.  相似文献

This paper describes a method for the culture of rat placental cells. The method involved separation of the basal layer from the labyrinth and sequential digestion of the cells. The cells were demonstrated not to be fibroblasts and are described in terms of their appearance under the light and electron microscopes. Transferrin and iron uptake by the cells was examined and compared with results achieved using other methods of study. The results showed that transferrin bound to receptors on the cell surface and that the transferrin, once bound, was taken into the cell. Only this internalized transferrin was capable of donating iron to the cells. The iron was accumulated within the cells and did not appear to be released to the incubation medium. The apparent dissociation constant (Ka) for transferrin was found to be 6.96 X 10(6) M-1, a value similar to that described by earlier workers. The placental cells had 3.4 X 10(11) binding sites/microgram DNA, equivalent to approximately 1 X 10(6) sites/cell. From these data, and from the rate of accumulation of iron by the cells, the receptor turnover time was estimated as being between 5 and 10 min.  相似文献

The frequencies of micronuclei in the buccal mucosa cells are investigated in several groups: in the control group and in the groups of workers from the pure iron factory (populated area A): in the control group and in the group of workers from the microbiological works (area B). Frequencies of micronuclei are shown to somewhat increase in workers of both works as compared to the control groups. Levels of micronuclei are revealed to increase in the smokers as against the nonsmokers in the group of workers from the microbiological factory. The above examination permits recommending analysis of micronuclei to estimate xenobiotics polluting respiratory tracts.  相似文献

Strains of Staphylococcus aureus isolated in Belgium and Zaïre from food and from various sources in the meat industry were biotyped, phage typed and tested for staphylococcal enterotoxin (SE) production. Thirty of the 185 strains examined produced one or more SE, and 23 of these belonged to the human biotype. Most SE-positive strains belonged to phage groups III and Mixed, or were not typable. None of the poultry-like biotype strains, which were frequent in nasal carriers among workers in meat plants as well as in minced meat, produced enterotoxins. Summary The developmental pattern of the neuter castes was studied in the mandibulate nasute generaCornitermes, Embiratermes andRhynchotermes. InCornitermes walkeri, all the workers and soldiers are male. There are two larval and a single worker instar. Workers can molt into presoldiers. InEmbiratermes chagresi andRhynchotermes perarmatus, both sexes are present among the neuters. A slight sexual dimorphism (males > females) is discernible among both larval instars and among workers ofE. chagresi; female workers can molt into presoldiers. InR. perarmatus, the sexual dimorphism is conspicuous from the first larval instar on. Male larvae go through two instars, then give rise to workers, which do not molt. InR. perarmatus, there is no worker stage in females, but a third larval instar, preceding the presoldier. 1. Variation in microbial communities between populations is increasingly hypothesised to affect animal fitness and performance, including for invasive species. Pathogenic species may be lost during the introduction process, enhancing invader fitness and abundance. 2. This study assessed fitness, immune gene expression, and microbial network complexity of invasive common wasps, Vespula vulgaris. Microbial networks were assayed using 16S and 18S sequencing and gene expression arrays in the native (Belgium) and introduced range (New Zealand). The immune gene expression of the wasp Down syndrome cell adhesion molecule (Dscam) gene homologue was examined. Dscam expression can be induced by viruses, Gram‐positive and Gram‐negative bacteria, and parasites. 3. Individual nest fitness was higher in the native range of Belgium than in the introduced New Zealand range. Microbial communities of wasps in the introduced range were more diverse with more complex networks, although some microorganisms were range‐specific. Microbial networks in the introduced range showed higher clustering coefficients, number of connected paths, network centralisation, number of neighbours and network density. 4. Larvae, workers, virgin and foundress queens had higher expression of Dscam in the New Zealand samples. These immune gene expression patterns were associated with higher pathogen pressure and lower relative fitness. 5. Epidemiological theory predicts that a high density of pathogen and microbial hosts should result in a high rate of disease infection, prevalence, and highly connected microbial networks. The results of this study support these predictions. Wasps displayed lower relative fitness and more highly connected microbial networks in New Zealand than in Belgium.  相似文献

Neisseria meningitidis is able to chelate iron from human transferrin (HTF), the main sequestrator of extracellular iron in vivo. Previous workers have reported that a ca. 70 kilodalton (kDa) iron regulated outer membrane protein (FeRP-70) is a highly specific receptor for HTF. We have examined the interaction between the iron regulated outer membrane proteins (OMP's) and HTF, using HTF and rabbit anti HTF, as well as gold labelled HTF (Au-HTF) to blot OMP's of various serogroups and serotypes of N. meningitidis. Also, we used monospecific rabbit anti FeRP-70 in competitive experiments to determine the role of FeRP-70 in HTF-binding. Single proteins (molecular weights range ca. 60 to ca. 90 kDa) were identified in the OMP's from each strain which reacted with HTF. HTF failed to block the reaction between FeRP-70 and the OMP's, conversely anti FeRP-70 failed to block the HTF-binding reaction. We believe that the 70 kDa iron regulated protein of N. meningitidis is not a human transferrin receptor.  相似文献

On a viewpoint of gender differences in Cd body burden and its health effects, we reviewed the population-based research including our own which conducted in Japan, Thailand, Australia, Poland, Belgium and Sweden to assess health effects of human exposure to environmental cadmium and their potential mechanisms. As a result, six risk factors in Cd health effects in women have been identified; (1) more serious type of renal tubular dysfunction, (2) difference in calcium metabolism and its regulatory hormones, (3) kidney sensitivity; difference in P450 phenotype, (4) pregnancy, (5) body iron store status, and (6) genetic factors. Further studies of Cd toxicity targeted to women would now appear necessary.  相似文献

Income‐related inequalities in denture‐wearing by Europeans aged 50 and above Background: Despite its importance for the planning of future treatment needs and an optimised allocation of health care resources, only little is known about socio‐economic inequalities in denture‐wearing by late middle‐aged and elderly generations. Objectives: To describe income‐related inequalities in denture‐wearing by elderly populations residing in different European countries. Material and methods: Data from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE Wave 2) were used to assess income‐related inequalities in denture‐wearing by means of Concentration Indices (CI) for populations aged 50+ from 14 different European countries. Results: We could identify a significant disproportionate concentration of denture‐wearing amongst the poor elderly populations in Denmark (CI = ?0.3534, corresponding to the highest level of inequality), Sweden (CI = ?0.3479), Switzerland (CI = ?0.2013), Greece (CI = ?0.1953), the Netherlands (CI = ?0.1413), France (CI = ?0.1339), Austria (CI = ?0.0974), Czech Republic (CI = ?0.0959), Belgium (CI = ?0.0947), Germany (CI = ?0.0762), Ireland (CI = ?0.0575) and Spain (CI = ?0.0482, corresponding to the lowest level of pro‐poor inequality). Poland became evident as the only country in which individuals from the upper end of the income scale wear more dentures than their peers from the lower end of the income scale (CI = 0.0379). No significant income‐related inequalities were observable in Italy. Conclusions: There is considerable income‐related inequality in denture‐wearing by several elderly populations in Europe. Future resource planning for prosthetic care should, thus, specifically distinguish between the treatment needs of different socio‐economic groups within elderly populations.  相似文献

The effects of iron-deficiency anaemia on workers productivity were studied in a tea plantation in Sri Lanka. The quantity of tea picked per day was studied before and after iron supplementation or placebo treatment. After one month''s treatment significantly more tea was picked when the haemoglobin (Hb) concentration was increased by iron supplementation than when it was not. The degree of improvement was greater in more-anaemic subjects (those with concentrations of 6.0-9.0 g Hb/dl). The level of physical activity of anaemic subjects in their everyday environment was also recorded for four or 24 hours continuously both before and after treatment. After three weeks these levels was significantly greater in the iron-treated than matched placebo-treated subjects. The economic implications of increased work productively with iron treatment are evident, particularly in developing countries. These results also provide strong evidence for the clinical impression that people with iron-deficiency anaemia suffer from tiredness and weakness.  相似文献

The cardiac cost of work and recovery pulse rates were evaluated in 38 glass bangle workers (mean age 27.8 years, SD 3.4) exposed to radiant heat (46.2 degrees C, SD 5.1) and high ambient temperature (38.2 degrees C, SD 3.4) for a mean period of 11.0 years, SD 3.5 in the glass bangle industry. A reference group of 15 controls (mean age 27.0 years, SD 3.5 unexposed to occupational heat stress served as a comparison. The results showed that the pulse rate increased from a mean basal value of 80.0 beats.min-1, SD 2.7 to 113.2 beats.min-1, SD 11.4 in the exposed workers while in the controls the increase was negligible. Thus the cardiac cost of work was found to be 33.2 beats.min-1, SD 11.1 in the exposed group which was significantly higher (P less than 0.001) than 7.8 beats.min-1, SD 4.2 observed in the control group. Among the exposed workers, 'belanias', who were engaged in the strenuous job of manually rotating the iron roller in the Belan furnace so that the molten glass could be wound in a spiral form, showed the maximum increase in the pulse rate (42.0 beats.min-1, SD 7.5) over the work-shift followed by 'muthias' (31.1 beats.min-1, SD 4.0) who were engaged in removing the glass spirals from the Belan furnace. However, wireman ('tarkashs'), who were engaged in the highly skilled job of making very fine threads of molten glass with the help of an iron roller, showed the smallest increase (19.5 beats.min-1, SD 3.4) in pulse rate over the work-shift.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

This paper presents new evidence on the evolution of adult height in 10 European countries for cohorts born between 1950 and 1980 using the European Community Household Panel (ECHP), which collects height data from Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden. Our findings show a gradual increase in adult height across all countries. However, countries from Southern Europe (Greece, Italy, Portugal, and Spain) experienced greater gains in stature than those located in Northern Europe (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, and Sweden).  相似文献

In the Terai region, despite its ecological richness, the people have long suffered from a deficiency of micronutrients such as vitamin A, iron and zinc. The aim of this study was to investigate dietary and nutritional intakes among people in the Terai region of Nepal. The results were compared by sex and ethnicity. Food consumption surveys (one-day weighed records) were conducted among 114 people (55 Mushar and 59 Tharu). Nutritional intakes were calculated using Nepali food composition and other tables. The diet in the Terai region was characterized by a large amount of rice consumed with a tiny amount of curry or dal as a side dish. Intakes of vitamin A, iron, riboflavin and selenium were less than 50% of the recommended daily allowance irrespective of ethnicity or sex (with the exception of iron intake among Tharu males). Intakes of thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, phosphorus and zinc were higher among the Tharu than the Mushar, while intakes of selenium and iodine were higher among the Mushar than the Tharu. The nutritional significance of these differences was slight. Protein intake (per kg body weight) was lower in females than in males, while the energy-adjusted micronutrient intakes did not differ by sex. Intakes of vitamin A, iron, riboflavin and selenium were deficient among the participants. Intervention projects such as the introduction of kitchen gardens or fish farming may be effective, but will increase the degree of inequality between the two ethnic groups.  相似文献

Most countries have witnessed a dramatic increase of income inequality in the past three decades. This paper addresses the question of whether income inequality is associated with the population prevalence of depression and, if so, the potential mechanisms and pathways which may explain this association. Our systematic review included 26 studies, mostly from high‐income countries. Nearly two‐thirds of all studies and five out of six longitudinal studies reported a statistically significant positive relationship between income inequality and risk of depression; only one study reported a statistically significant negative relationship. Twelve studies were included in a meta‐analysis with dichotomized inequality groupings. The pooled risk ratio was 1.19 (95% CI: 1.07‐1.31), demonstrating greater risk of depression in populations with higher income inequality relative to populations with lower inequality. Multiple studies reported subgroup effects, including greater impacts of income inequality among women and low‐income populations. We propose an ecological framework, with mechanisms operating at the national level (the neo‐material hypothesis), neighbourhood level (the social capital and the social comparison hypotheses) and individual level (psychological stress and social defeat hypotheses) to explain this association. We conclude that policy makers should actively promote actions to reduce income inequality, such as progressive taxation policies and a basic universal income. Mental health professionals should champion such policies, as well as promote the delivery of interventions which target the pathways and proximal determinants, such as building life skills in adolescents and provision of psychological therapies and packages of care with demonstrated effectiveness for settings of poverty and high income inequality.  相似文献

Migration of health professionals is an important policy issue for both source and destination countries around the world. The majority of migrant care workers in industrialized countries today are women. However, the dimension of mobility of highly skilled females from countries of the global south has been almost entirely neglected for many years. This paper explores the experiences of high-skilled female African migrant health-workers (MHW) utilising the framework of Global Care Chain (GCC) research. In the frame of the EU-project HURAPRIM (Human Resources for Primary Health Care in Africa), the research team conducted 88 semi-structured interviews with female and male African MHWs in five countries (Botswana, South Africa, Belgium, Austria, UK) from July 2011 until April 2012. For this paper we analysed the 34 interviews with female physicians and nurses using the qualitative framework analysis approach and the software atlas.ti. In terms of the effect of the migration on their career, almost all of the respondents experienced short-term, long-term or permanent inability to work as health-care professionals; few however also reported a positive career development post-migration. Discrimination based on a foreign nationality, race or gender was reported by many of our respondents, physicians and nurses alike, whether they worked in an African or a European country. Our study shows that in addition to the phenomenon of deskilling often reported in GCC research, many female MHW are unable to work according to their qualifications due to the fact that their diplomas are not recognized in the country of destination. Policy strategies are needed regarding integration of migrants in the labour market and working against discrimination based on race and gender.  相似文献
