Average adult height is a physical measure of the biological standard of living of a population. While the biological and economic standards of living of a population are very different concepts, they are linked and may empirically move together. If this is so, then cohort heights can also be used to make inferences about the economic standard of living and health of a population when other data are not available. We investigate how informative this approach is in terms of inferring income, nutrition, and mortality using data on heights from developing countries over the last 50 years for female cohorts born 1951–1992. We find no evidence that the absolute differences in adult height across countries are associated with different economic living standards. Within countries, however, faster increases in adult cohort height over time are associated with more rapid growth of GDP per capita, life expectancy, and nutritional intake. Using our instrumental variable approach, each centimeter gain in height is associated with a 6% increase in income per capita, a reduction in infant mortality of 7 per thousand (or an 1.25 year increase in life expectancy), and an increase in nutrition of 64 calories and 2 grams of protein per person per day relative to the global trend. We find that increases in cohort height can predict increases in income even for countries not used in the estimation of the relationship. This suggests our approach has predictive power out of sample for countries where we lack income and health data.  相似文献

通过分析青藏高原东南部色季拉山林线物种急尖长苞冷杉不同年龄叶片、嫩枝、枝条、树干及根系的稳定碳同位素比值(6BC)及其空间分布特征,研究了植物光合作用后稳定碳同位素分馏及其影响因素.结果表明:植物不同器官δ^13C值差异显著(P〈0.001),为树干(-24.19‰)〉枝条(-24.56‰)〉根部(-25.05‰)〉嫩枝(-25.12‰)〉叶片(-27.25‰),说明从光合作用器官到非光合作用器官有明显的碳同位素分馏,且非光合作用器官之间也存在差异.随着急尖长苞冷杉叶片或嫩枝年龄的增加,叶片δ^13C值降低,而嫩枝δ^13C值升高(P〈0.01).冠层上部叶片δ^13C值明显高于冠层下部(P〈0.01),嫩枝δ^13C值则无显著性差异(P〉0.05).远离树干2.5m的枝条δ^13C值有明显的高度变化(P〈0.01),而离树干较近(1.5或0.5m)的枝条及树干在不同高度之间无差异(P〉0.05).在同一冠层高度,随着与树干距离加大,枝条δ^13C值降低,且在中部和下部枝条尤为明显.说明林线地区冷杉光合作用后存在明显的碳同位素分馏;特定冠层高度树干与枝条生长所需的碳并不是全部来源于同高度的叶片光合作用合成的碳.  相似文献

以来源于大洋洲原生种源区、亚洲原生种源区、亚洲引种次生区以及非洲引种次生区4个区域的20个种源短枝木麻黄种子和当年生幼苗为材料,通过种子千粒重以及幼苗苗高、地径、一级侧枝粗度、一级侧枝长度等7个性状对短枝木麻黄表型多样性进行了研究,以探讨种群苗期表型遗传差异,为短枝木麻黄早期遗传选择和遗传改良提供基本资料。结果表明:(1)短枝木麻黄种子千粒重在区域间和区域内种源间差异极显著,且千粒重具有显著的地理变异模式,随经度的增大而降低。(2)当年生幼苗苗高、地径在不同区域间及区域内种源间均存在极显著差异,其中泰国干东港种源幼苗生长最好(苗高76.6cm,地径4.64mm),而种源汤加的幼苗生长最差(苗高28.3cm,地径2.58mm)。(3)当年生幼苗一级侧枝粗度、一级侧枝长度、二级侧枝长度、每小枝节数和齿叶数在不同区域间及区域内种源间均存在极显著差异,其中齿叶数在区域间的变异系数最大(82.15%)。(4)通径分析表明,一级侧枝长度对苗高具有显著的正向影响作用,而一级侧枝粗度和二级侧枝长度对地径具有显著正向影响作用,它们可作为短枝木麻黄优良新品种筛选的参考因子。  相似文献

To evaluate putative adaptive changes underpinning the invasion of freshwater by the Brachyura, this investigation examines anisosmotic extra and isosmotic intracellular osmoregulatory capabilities in Dilocarcinus pagei, a neotropical, hololimnetic crab, including its embryonic and juvenile phases. All ontogenetic stages show a remarkable ability to survive a high salinity medium (25 per thousand, 750 mOsm/kg H2O, 350 mm Na+, 400 mM Cl-). Adults hyper-regulate hemolymph osmolality up to isosmoticity at 744 mOsm kg/H2O (24 per thousand), [Na+] and [Cl-] becoming isoionic at 449 (22 per thousand) and 256 mM (16 per thousand), respectively. Hemolymph (420+/-39 mOsm/kg H2O) and urine (384+/-44 mOsm/kg H2O) are isosmotic in adults held in freshwater, and after 5-days exposure to 25 per thousand (787+/-9 mOsm/kg H2O and 777+/-43 mOs/kg H2O, respectively); D. pagei does not produce dilute urine. Total free amino acid (FAA) concentrations in embryos (14.9+/-1.2), juveniles (32.8+/-0.1) and adult muscle (10.9+/-2.1 mmol/kg wet weight) in freshwater are 30-fold less than in brackish/marine Crustacea, suggesting that FAA constitute a useful parameter to evaluate adaptation to freshwater. On acclimation to 25 per thousand, total FAA increase by approximately 100% in embryos and in adult muscle and nerve tissue and hemolymph, owing to large increases in proline, arginine and/or alanine. However, effective FAA contribution to intracellular osmolality increases only in embryos, from 3 to 4.5%. These findings suggest that gill-based, anisosmotic extracellular regulation has supplanted isosmotic intracellular regulatory mechanisms during the conquest of freshwater by the Brachyura, and indicate that D. pagei may be an old, well-adapted inhabitant of this biotope.  相似文献

The branchial osmoregulatory response of gilthead sea bream (Sparus auratus L.) to short-term (2-192 hr) and long-term (2 weeks) exposure to different environmental salinities (5 per thousand, 15 per thousand, 25 per thousand, 38 per thousand and 60 per thousand) was investigated. A "U-shaped" relationship was observed between environmental salinity and gill Na+,K+ -ATPase activity in both long- and short-term exposure to altered salinity, with the increase in activity occurring between 24 and 96 hr after the onset of exposure. Plasma osmolality and plasma ions (sodium, chloride, calcium and potassium) showed a tendency to increase in parallel with salinity. These variables only differed significantly (P<0.05) in fish adapted to 60 per thousand salinity with respect to fish adapted to full-strength sea-water (SW). Plasma glucose remained unchanged whereas plasma lactate was elevated at 5 per thousand and 60 per thousand. Muscle water content (MWC) was significantly lower in fish adapted to 60 per thousand. Chloride cells (CC) were only present on the surface of the gill filaments and absent from the secondary lamellae. CC distribution was not altered by external salinity. However, the number and size of CC were significantly increased at salinity extremes (5 per thousand and 60 per thousand), whereas fish exposed to intermediate salinities (15 per thousand and 25 per thousand) had fewer and smaller cells. Furthermore, the CC of fish exposed to diluted SW became rounder whereas they were more elongated in fish in full-strength and hypersaline SW. This is consistent with previous reports indicating the existence of two CC types in euryhaline fish. At likely environmental salinities, gilthead sea bream show minor changes in plasma variables and the effective regulation of gill Na+,K+ -ATPase. However, at very low salinities both haemodilution and up-regulation of gill Na+,K+ -ATPase predict a poor adaptation most likely related to deficiency or absence of specific components of the CC important for ion xuptake.  相似文献

Aspects of osmoregulation including salinity tolerance, osmoregulatory capacity, location of transporting epithelia, and the expression of the enzyme Na+/K+-ATPase were investigated in the developing brown shrimp, Crangon crangon (L.), from the North Sea. Early developmental stages and large juveniles were exposed to a wide range of salinities for measurement of hemolymph osmolality and survival rates. In media ranging from 17.0 per thousand to 32.2 per thousand, salinity tolerance was generally high (survival rates: 70%-100%) in all developmental stages, but it decreased in media <10.2 per thousand. Zoeal stages and decapodids slightly hyperregulated at 17.0 per thousand and osmoconformed in media > or =25.5 per thousand. At 10.2 per thousand, these stages showed high mortality, and only juveniles survived at 5.3 per thousand. Juveniles hyperregulated at 10.2 per thousand and 17.0 per thousand, osmoconformed at 25.5 per thousand, and hyporegulated in media > or =32.2 per thousand. Large juveniles hyperregulated also at 5.3 per thousand. Expression of the Na+/K+-ATPase and ion-transporting cells was located through immunofluorescence microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. In zoeae I and VI, a strong immunoreactivity was observed in cells of the inner epithelia of the branchiostegites and in epithelial cells lining the pleurae. Their ultrastructure showed typical features of ion-transporting cells. In decapodids and juveniles, ionocytes and expression of Na+/K+-ATPase remained located in the branchiostegite epithelium, but they disappeared from the pleurae and appeared in the epipodites. In large juveniles, the cells of the gill shaft showed positive immunolabeling and ultrastructural features of ionocytes. In summary, the adult pattern of osmoregulation in C. crangon is accomplished after metamorphosis from a moderately hyperosmoconforming decapodid to an effectively hyper-/hyporegulating juvenile stage. Salinity tolerance and osmoregulatory capacity are closely correlated with the development of ion-transporting cells and the expression of Na+/K+-ATPase.  相似文献

We measured seasonal and interannual variations in delta(13)C values within the carbon reservoirs (leaves and soil) and CO(2) fluxes (soil and ecosystem respired CO(2)) of an old growth coniferous forest in the Pacific Northwest USA with relation to local meteorological conditions. There were significant intra-annual and interannual differences in the carbon isotope ratios of CO(2) respired at both the ecosystem (delta(13)C(R)) and the soil levels (delta(13)C(R-soil)), but only limited variations in the carbon isotope ratios of carbon stocks. The delta(13)C(R) values varied by as much as 4.4 per thousand over a growing season, while delta(13)C(R-soil )values changed as much as 6.2 per thousand. The delta(13)C of soil organic carbon (delta(13)C(SOC)) and needle organic carbon (delta(13)C(P)) exhibited little or no significant changes over the course of this study. Carbon isotope discrimination within leaves (Delta(p)) showed systematic decreases with increased canopy height, but remained fairly constant throughout the year (Delta(p)=17.9 per thousand -19.2 per thousand at the top of the canopy, Delta(p)=19.6 per thousand -20.9 per thousand at mid-canopy, Delta(p)=23.3 per thousand -25.1 per thousand at the canopy base). The temporal variation in the delta(13)C of soil and ecosystem respired CO(2) was correlated ( r=0.93, P<0.001) with soil moisture levels, with dry summer months having the most (13)C-enriched values. The dynamic seasonal changes in delta(13)C of respired CO(2) are hypothesized to be the result of fast cycling of recently fixed carbon back to the atmosphere. One scaling consequence of the seasonal and interannual variations in delta(13)C(R) is that inversion-based carbon-cycle models dependent on observed atmospheric CO(2) concentration and isotope values may be improved by incorporating dynamic delta(13)C(R) values to interpret regional carbon sink strength.  相似文献

Historical documents indicate that breastfeeding and weaning practices have fluctuated in England through history. In order to obtain evidence for general breastfeeding patterns in Late/Sub-Roman Britain, stable carbon and nitrogen isotope values were measured in juvenile and adult skeletons (n = 87) from the cemetery of Queenford Farm, Dorchester-on-Thames, Oxfordshire. As the site contained few individuals between 0-1.5 years of age, it was not possible to determine the initial timing for the introduction of weaning foods. Between ages 2-4 years, the mean +/- SD delta(13)C results (-20.2 +/- 0.3 per thousand) are significantly more negative (t = -4.03, P < 0.001) compared to adult females (-19.7 +/- 0.3 per thousand). This is interpreted as evidence of a different diet being fed to children during weaning. After age 2, the delta(15)N values gradually decline, indicating complete cessation of breastfeeding by 3-4 years. Among adults, stature (males = 1.68 +/- 0.06 m; females = 1.58 +/- 0.07 m) and sexual dimorphism (106) were low, suggesting that the population was possibly under environmental stress. The delta(13)C results for adults are similar, but females show a small but statistically significantly (t = -2.86, P < 0.01) lower mean delta(15)N value (9.9 +/- 0.9 per thousand) compared to males (10.6 +/- 0.5 per thousand). These lower female delta(15)N values possibly reflect the different physiology of the sexes (pregnancy and/or lactation) or the reduced consumption of animal/fish protein by women, and this may have been influenced by individual preference, family needs, or societal values of the era.  相似文献

More than 30 years after its introduction, growth hormone (GH) treatment is well established in children with GH deficiency. Nevertheless, the long-term results of this therapy, expressed as height, are generally considered unsatisfactory. We report on results obtained in a group of GH-deficient children who were treated with daily injections of recombinant GH within the first 5 years of life and who reached an adult height very close to their target height. The full catch-up growth to the target height demonstrated in these patients suggests that replacement therapy should be started early and continued until adulthood. Height at onset of puberty is an important variable which might significantly influence the adult height. The significant and prolonged influence of birth weight on growth response to GH therapy underlines the important role of fetal growth in planning early treatment of GH-deficient children.  相似文献

Results of field surveys and laboratory measurements of oxygen consumption and body fluid osmolality at different salinities in the mysids Neomysis integer, Mesopodopsis slabberi, and Rhopalophthalmus mediterraneus from the Guadalquivir estuary (southwest Spain) were used to test the hypothesis that osmotic stress (oxygen consumption vs. isosmotic points) was lowest at salinities that field distributions suggest are optimal. The three species showed overlapping spatial distributions within the estuary but clear segregation along the salinity gradient: N. integer, M. slabberi, and R. mediterraneus displayed maximal densities at lower, intermediate, and higher salinities, respectively. Adults of N. integer were extremely efficient hyperregulators (isosmotic point 30 per thousand) over the full salinity range tested (3 per thousand-32 per thousand), and their oxygen consumption rates were independent of salinity; adults of M. slabberi were strong hyper- and hyporegulators at salinities between 7 per thousand and 29 per thousand (isosmotic point, 21 per thousand) and showed higher oxygen consumptions at the lowest salinity (6 per thousand); adults of R. mediterraneus hyperregulated at salinities between 19 per thousand and seawater (isosmotic point, 36 per thousand), with the lowest oxygen consumption at salinity around their isosmotic point (35 per thousand). Thus, the osmoregulation capabilities of M. slabberi and R. mediterraneus seem to determine the salinity ranges in which most of their adults live, but this is not so for adults of N. integer. Moreover, maximal field densities of M. slabberi (males and females) and R. mediterraneus (males) occur at the same salinities as the lowest oxygen consumption. In contrast, field distribution of N. integer was clearly biased toward the lower end of the salinity ranges within which it osmoregulated. We hypothesize that the greater euryhalinity of N. integer makes it possible for this species to avoid competition with R. mediterraneus by inhabiting the more stressful oligohaline zone.  相似文献

We have investigated the effect of gamma-radiation on the frequency of bone marrow micronucleated erythrocytes in seven inbred strains of adult male mice. Twenty animals of each strain viz. Swiss, C57BL/6, C57BR/cd, C3H, CBA, DBA, and AKR were irradiated at 0.0, 0.125, 0.25, 0.50, and 1.00Gy of gamma-rays at a dose rate of 0.46Gy/min using a 60Co-teletharapy machine. Animals were sacrificed 24h post-irradiation, bone marrow smears were made and stained in May-Grunwald Giemsa for evaluating the frequency of micronucleated erythrocytes as indicators of chromosomal damage. About 2000 polychromatic erythrocytes (PCEs) and the corresponding normochromatic erythrocytes (NCEs) were scored for each mouse. Thus, at least 8000 PCEs were scored for each dose point in all the groups. The spontaneous frequency of mn-PCEs per thousand (per thousand ) cells varied considerably among the strains with C57BR/cd (3.47 per thousand ) exhibiting highest as compared to CBA (2.47 per thousand ) and DBA (2.35 per thousand). Radiation exposure, even at lowest dose of 0.125Gy, induced a significant increase in the frequency of mn-PCEs and a dose dependent response was observed among all the strains. However, the animals irradiated at lower doses (0.125-0.50Gy) showed marked differences in the extent of radiation induced chromosomal damage among the various genotypes. At highest dose of radiation (1.00Gy), genotype dependent variability in the frequency of mn-PCEs was not so marked but relatively comparable among the various strains. This study clearly shows that the magnitude of variability of radiation induced chromosomal damage among different strains of mouse can be different at different doses. Therefore, use of single dose point comparisons and/or use of only higher doses of radiation for ascertainment of genotype dependent variability in mouse may lead to erroneous conclusions.  相似文献

The intramolecular distribution of nitrogen isotopes in N2O is an emerging tool for defining the relative importance of microbial sources of this greenhouse gas. The application of intramolecular isotopic distributions to evaluate the origins of N2O, however, requires a foundation in laboratory experiments in which individual production pathways can be isolated. Here we evaluate the site preferences of N2O produced during hydroxylamine oxidation by ammonia oxidizers and by a methanotroph, ammonia oxidation by a nitrifier, nitrite reduction during nitrifier denitrification, and nitrate and nitrite reduction by denitrifiers. The site preferences produced during hydroxylamine oxidation were 33.5 +/- 1.2 per thousand, 32.5 +/- 0.6 per thousand, and 35.6 +/- 1.4 per thousand for Nitrosomonas europaea, Nitrosospira multiformis, and Methylosinus trichosporium, respectively, indicating similar site preferences for methane and ammonia oxidizers. The site preference of N2O from ammonia oxidation by N. europaea (31.4 +/- 4.2 per thousand) was similar to that produced during hydroxylamine oxidation (33.5 +/- 1.2 per thousand) and distinct from that produced during nitrifier denitrification by N. multiformis (0.1 +/- 1.7 per thousand), indicating that isotopomers differentiate between nitrification and nitrifier denitrification. The site preferences of N2O produced during nitrite reduction by the denitrifiers Pseudomonas chlororaphis and Pseudomonas aureofaciens (-0.6 +/- 1.9 per thousand and -0.5 +/- 1.9 per thousand, respectively) were similar to those during nitrate reduction (-0.5 +/- 1.9 per thousand and -0.5 +/- 0.6 per thousand, respectively), indicating no influence of either substrate on site preference. Site preferences of approximately 33 per thousand and approximately 0 per thousand are characteristic of nitrification and denitrification, respectively, and provide a basis to quantitatively apportion N2O.  相似文献

The euryhalinity of mitten crab, Eriocheir sinensis, is based on osmoregulation, and thus on the activity of Na(+)-K(+)-ATPase. We studied location and activity of this enzyme in gills of juvenile crabs exposed to 5 per thousand, 25 per thousand, and 40 per thousand salinity. The posterior gills showed always a high number of immunopositive cells (IPC), staining with fluorescent antibody against Na(+)-K(+)-ATPase, covering at 5 per thousand the entire lamellae. At 25 per thousand, they showed fewer IPC which occurred only at the bases of the lamellae. Enzyme activity was consistently higher in posterior than in anterior gills. Low salinity stimulated the activity only in posterior gills. Both histochemical and enzymatic results are consistent with previous ultrastructural observations showing that the epithelial cells of the posterior, but not the anterior gills exhibit typical traits of ionocytes. While an increase in Na(+)-K(+)-ATPase activity at a reduced salinity is consistent with a strong hyper-osmoregulatory capacity in juvenile crabs, a low activity at an enhanced salinity suggests a physiological response, directed towards a reduction of Na(+) uptake. The activity increase of ion-transporting enzymes is directly related to spatial changes in their distribution along the osmoregulatory tissue, i.e. an enhanced number of IPC scattered along the entire lamellae. In juveniles, this allows for successful development and growth at reduced salinities.  相似文献

We show that an animal's past and present diet can be distinguished through the delta(13)C of exhaled CO(2). The exhaled delta(13)C of 12 pigeons fed solely corn (a C(4) plant) for 30 days was -13.63 per thousand (+/-0.30). We then fed six pigeons wheat (a C(3) plant) and continued to feed the other six corn. After 48 h the exhaled delta(13)C from the corn-fed pigeons was unchanged; that from the wheat-fed pigeons was -20.5 per thousand. We then fasted three of the wheat-fed pigeons for 3 days, after which their exhaled delta(13)C was -14.96 per thousand, while it was -13.57 per thousand in corn-fed pigeons, and -22.22 per thousand in pigeons that continued on wheat. Thus, we could infer diet from the (13)C/(12)C ratios of exhaled CO(2). Significantly, breath samples from fasted pigeons also revealed that they had eaten corn when their lipid stores were formed. We also showed that the change in the (13)C/(12)C of exhaled CO(2) had a half-life of approximately 3.5 h, and a time constant of approximately 6.7 h. Thus one can infer past and present diet from exhaled delta(13)C alone, if the initial breath sample is followed by a fasted breath sample, without harming the animal or having to recapture it successively.  相似文献

Stable carbon isotopes can provide insight into carbon cycling pathways in natural environments. We examined carbon isotope fractionations associated with a hyperthermophilic fermentative bacterium, Thermotoga maritima, and a thermophilic chemolithoautotrophic bacterium Persephonella marina. In T. maritima, phospholipid fatty acids (PLFA) are slightly enriched in 13C relative to biomass (epsilon = 0.1-0.8 per thousand). However, PLFA and biomass are depleted in 13C relative to the substrate glucose by approximately 8 per thousand. In P. marina, PLFA are 1.8-14.5 per thousand enriched in 13C relative to biomass, which suggests that the reversed tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle or the 3-hydroxypropionate pathway may be used for CO2 fixation. This is supported by small fractionation between biomass and CO2 (epsilon = -3.8 per thousand to -5.0 per thousand), which is similar to fractionations reported for other organisms using similar CO2 fixation pathways. Identification of the exact pathway will require biochemical assay for specific enzymes associated with the reversed TCA cycle or the 3-hydroxypropionate pathway.  相似文献

A new species of naked amoeba, Platyamoeba pseudovannellida n.sp., is described on the basis of light microscopic and fine structural features. The amoeba was isolated from the Salton Sea, California, from water at a salinity of ca. 44%. Locomotive amoebae occasionally had a spatulate outline and floating cells had radiating pseudopodia, sometimes with pointed tips. Both these features are reminiscent of the genus Vannella. However, the surface coat (glycocalyx) as revealed by TEM indicates that this is a species of Platyamoeba. Although salinity was not used as a diagnostic feature, this species was found to have remarkable tolerance to fluctuating salinity levels, even when changes were rapid. Amoebae survived over the range 0 per thousand to 150 per thousand salt and grew within the range 0 per thousand to 138 per thousand salt. The generation time of cells averaged 29 h and was not markedly affected by salt concentration. This is longer than expected for an amoeba of this size and suggests a high energetic cost of coping with salinity changes. The morphology of cells changed with increasing salinity: at 0 per thousand cells were flattened and active and at the other extreme (138 per thousand) amoebae were wrinkled and domed and cell movement was very slow. At the ultrastructural level, the cytoplasm of cells grown at high salinity (98 per thousand was considerably denser than that of cells reared at 0 per thousand.  相似文献

Addition of NaCl at 2.5% to tryptic soy broth (TSB) significantly increased the growth of Photobacterium damselae subsp. damselae. Tiger shrimp Penaeus monodon held in 25 per thousand seawater were injected with P. damsela subsp. damselae grown in TSB containing NaCl at 0.5%, 1.5%, 2.5% and 3.5% at a dose of 8.48 x 10(4)colony-forming units (cfu)shrimp(-1). Over 24-96 h, the cumulative mortality was significantly higher for the shrimp challenged with P. damselae subsp. damselae grown in 2.5% NaCl than those grown in 0.5%, 1.5% and 3.5% NaCl. In another experiment, P. monodon held in 25 per thousand were injected with TSB-grown P. damselae subsp. damselae (8.48 x 10(4)cfushrimp(-1)), and then transferred to 5 per thousand, 15 per thousand, 25 per thousand (control) and 35 per thousand. After 96 h, the mortality was highest for the P. damselae subsp. damselae-injected shrimp held in 5 per thousand, and the lowest for the P. damselae subsp. damselae-injected shrimp held in 25 per thousand. In a separate experiment, P. monodon held in 25 per thousand and then transferred to 5 per thousand, 15 per thousand, 25 per thousand (control) and 35 per thousand were examined for immune parameters, and phagocytic activity and clearance efficiency of P. damselae subsp. damselae after 12-96 h. The THC, hyaline cell, phenoloxidase activity, respiratory burst, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, phagocytic activity and clearance efficiency decreased significantly for the shrimp held in 5 per thousand, 15 per thousand and 35 per thousand after 12h. We studied the participation of carbonic anhydrase (CA), V-H(+)-ATPase, and Cl(-)/HCO3- exchanger in electrogenic ion absorption through the gills of Chasmagnathus granulatus. CA activity was measured in anterior gills and posterior gills after acclimation to 2 per thousand, 10 per thousand, 30 per thousand (about seawater), and 45 per thousand salinity. The highest CA specific activity was detected in the microsomal fraction in anterior gills, and in the cytosolic fraction, in posterior ones. Both fractions were strongly induced by decreasing salinity only in posterior gills. Perfusion of posterior gills from crabs acclimated to either 2 per thousand or 10 per thousand with acetazolamide inhibited CA activity almost completely. In posterior gills from crabs acclimated to 2 per thousand and perfused with 20 per thousand saline (iso-osmotic for these crabs), acetazolamide reduced transepithelial potential difference (V(te)) by 47%, further addition of ouabain enhanced the effect to 88%. Acetazolamide had no effect in the same gills perfused with 30 per thousand saline (iso-osmotic for seawater acclimated crabs). Bafilomycin A1 and SITS (inhibitors of V-H(+)-ATPase and Cl(-)/HCO3-) reduced V(te) by 15-16% in gills perfused with normal 20 per thousand saline, and by 77% and 45%, respectively when they were applied in Na-free 20 per thousand saline, suggesting the participation of those transporters and cytosolic CA in electrogenic ion absorption.  相似文献

Heavy rain during the wheat seedling stage, drought in the flowering stage, and high temperatures with high humidity prior to harvest all contribute to substantial reductions in overall wheat yields in the Chinese province of Sichuan. In this study, we explored the effects of Rht-B1 and Yr18 in Chuannong16 (CN16) and a population derived from breeding line 30481. The population of 188 recombinant inbred lines was genotyped using an iSelect 90,000 single nucleotide polymorphism array and two functional markers for Rht-B1 and Yr18, and was phenotyped over 2 years in replicated trials. Grain yield was highly correlated with leaf color, plant height, and thousand kernel weights, and was negatively correlated with sedimentation. Plant height was positively correlated with grain yield and leaf color and negatively correlated with the number of tillers, thousand kernel weight, and sedimentation volume. In addition, sedimentation was negatively correlated with all five of the other traits (plant height, leaf color, tillers per square meter, grain yield, and thousand kernel weight) using both genetic and phenotypic correlation. The semi-dwarf allele Rht-B1b reduced plant height, grain yield, and thousand kernel weight. Yr18 did not affect stripe rust or other agronomic traits in the population examined. A total of 15 quantitative trait locii (QTLs) were identified for seven traits over 2 years, except for grain yield. One pleiotropic QTL on chromosome 4B was significantly associated with leaf color, thousand kernel weight, and plant height, but it was in different scaffolds with Rht-B1 on the physical map. We found a co-segregation SNP marker with Yr18 in our population; they were not in the same region on the physical map. This may be due to the relatively small population size and limited recombinant events in the population.  相似文献

White shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei held in 25 per thousand seawater were injected with TSB-grown Vibrio alginolyticus (1 x 10(4) cfu shrimp(-1)), and then transferred to 5, 15, 25 (control) and 35 per thousand. Over 24-96 h, the mortality of V. alginolyticus-injected shrimp held in 5 per thousand and 15 per thousand was significantly higher than that of shrimp held in 25 per thousand and 35 per thousand, and the mortality of V. alginolyticus-injected shrimp held in 5 per thousand was the highest. Shrimp held in 25 per thousand and then transferred to 5, 15, 25 (control) and 35 per thousand were examined for THC (total haemocyte count), phenoloxidase activity, respiratory burst, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, phagocytic activity and clearance efficiency to V. alginolyticus after 12-72 h. The THC, phenoloxidase activity, respiratory burst, SOD activity, phagocytic activity and clearance efficiency decreased significantly for the shrimp held in 5 and 15 per thousand after 12 h. It is concluded that the shrimp transferred from 25 per thousand to low salinity levels (5 and 15 per thousand) had reduced immune ability and decreased resistance against V. alginolyticus infection.  相似文献
