The increasing P and N content in the two main tidal basins in the western Dutch Wadden Sea, the Marsdiep and the Vliestroom basin, has been reconstructed from the 50s onwards. The area is enriched with nutrients by two sources both originating from the river Rhine, one being the discharge from Lake IJssel and the other the exchange with the coastal zone of the North Sea. Due to a buffering by Lake IJssel for about 15–20 years, the eutrophication of the western Wadden Sea showed a time lag compared with the continuously increasing nutrient concentrations in the river Rhine and the coastal zone of the North Sea. At present, the primary production in part of the area still seems to be nutrient limited in summer, while loadings have already been decreasing in recent years. So far, no severe, negative effects on the ecosystem have been reported. Some remarks are made on the eutrophication in other parts of the Dutch' Wadden Sea in relation to the hydrographic characteristics of these areas. The primary production in the western part of the Dutch Wadden Sea (Marsdiep tidal basin) has been reported to have increased by a factor of two since the late 1970s. This doubling of the phytoplankton and the microphytobenthos production has been ascribed to the eutrophication of that area: mean annual phosphate concentrations have increased, whereas the nitrogen concentrations have not. Analysis of the available production data indicates a more than tenfold increase of the production of the phytoplankton in the Marsdiep tidal channel since the early 1950s. The increase in the phytoplankton production in the inner area seems to be of the same order of magnitude. The primary production of the phytobenthos and the secondary production of the macrozoobenthos seems to have increased proportionally to that of the phytoplankton. It is known that the nutrients in the Marsdiep tidal basin originate from the River Rhine. However, there are two possible routes for nutrients to reach that area. One is via the River IJssel and Lake IJssel (varying amounts of fresh water are sluiced out from the latter into the Wadden Sea). The other is along the coast of the North Sea, where the water transport is driven northeastwards by the residual current. Analysis of available data shows that the annual primary production in the Marsdiep tidal basin is mainly determined by the phosphate discharge from Lake IJssel which directly reach that part of the Wadden Sea, rather than from the River Rhine of which the water must run northward along the coast before reaching the western Dutch Wadden Sea. The close relation between fluctations in annual phosphate discharges and fluctations in annual phytoplankton primary production up to more than ten times the 1950 values indicates that primary production in the Marsdiep tidal channel and probably even in the main part of the whole basin, was and is phosphate limited. The mineralization of North Sea particulate organic matter inside the Wadden Sea, previously thought to be the main phosphate source, is questioned. The repercussions of this finding for management are discussed.  相似文献

The Wadden Sea is a shallow tidal area along the North Sea coast of The Netherlands, Germany and Denmark. The area is strongly influenced by rivers, the most important of which are the rivers Rhine, Meuse and Elbe. Due to the increased nutrient load into the coastal zone the primary production in the Wadden Sea almost tripled during the past few decades. A conceptual model is presented that links nitrogen input (mainly nitrate) via Rhine and Meuse with the annual nitrogen cycle within the Wadden Sea. Three essential steps in the model are: (1) nitrogen limits the primary production in the coastal zone, (2) a proportional part of the primary produced organic matter is transported into the Wadden Sea and (3) the imported organic matter is remineralized within the Wadden Sea and supports the local productivity by nitrogen turn-over. The conceptual model predicts that during years with a high nutrient load more organic matter is produced in the coastal zone and more organic matter is transported into and remineralized within the Wadden Sea than during years with low nutrient loads. As a proxy for the remineralisation intensity ammonium plus nitrite concentrations in autumn were used. Based on monitoring data from the Dutch Wadden Sea (1977–1997) the above mentioned model was statistically tested. In autumn, however, a significant correlation was found between autumn values of ammonium and nitrite and river input of nitrogen during the previous winter, spring and summer. The analysis supports that in years with a high riverine nitrogen load more organic matter is remineralized within the Wadden Sea than in years with a low nitrogen load. A comparison with older data from 1960 to 1961 suggests that the remineralisation intensity in the Wadden Sea has increased by a factor of two to three. This is not reflected by a two to three-fold increase in riverine nitrogen load from 1960 to present. It is suggested that the increased remineralisation rates in the Dutch Wadden Sea between the 1960s and the 1980s/1990s are largely caused by an increased nitrogen flux through the Channel and the Strait of Dover and by an increased atmospheric nitrogen input.  相似文献

From 1955 to the mid 1980s the loads of both nitrogen and phosphorus from the river Rhine to the Dutch coastal area, the Wadden Sea included, increased. Since 1985 the phosphorus loads has decreased significantly, while the nitrogen load remained about the same.Annual primary production in the western Dutch Wadden Sea has increased fromc. 40 g C m–2 (1950) to 150 (mid 1960s) and over 500 g C m–2 (1986). The biomass of macrozoobenthos has more than doubled since 1970. Simultaneously, the meat yield of cultured blue mussels (Mytilus edulis), has increased since the 1960s. Previously, it was indicated that the increase in primary production of the phytoplankton over the period 1950 to 1986 was stimulated by the load of dissolved inorganic phosphate from Lake IJssel, a reservoir supplied by Rhine water. Since 1990, however, primary production has been higher than was expected from decreased phosphate loads from Lake IJssel. It is argued that this lack of response may have been caused by increased concentrations of dissolved inorganic phosphate at sea originating from increased inflow from a.o. the Strait of Dover, which compensate for the decrease in phosphate from the rivers, possibly in combination with a significant improvement of the light conditions of the water in the Wadden Sea.  相似文献

Gelatinous zooplankton is more abundant in the Wadden Sea area of North Sylt than in the adjacent North Sea. The hypothesis is tested that medusae maintain their position in the North Sylt Wadden Sea by ascending to the surface at flood tides and descending to the bottom during ebb tides, thus avoiding the strong ebb currents which could carry them out of this food-rich area. Surface sampling at a main tidal channel revealed great differences between high tide and low tide abundances of five species of medusae in the surface layer.Rathkea octopunctata, Sarsia tubulosa, Eucheilota macultata andPleurobrachia pileus were all more abundant around high tide than during low tide. Bongo net sampling in different depth layers revealed thatPleurobrachia pileus, Bougainvillia ramosa andEucheilota maculata showed a preference for the surface layers around high tide, whereas most of the individuals were found in the deepest layer around low tide. The results suggest tidally-induced vertical migration of medusae in tidal channels. This may assist maintenance of the populations in the Wadden Sea area near Sylt.  相似文献

This paper deals with the methods and results of monitoring sea level (tidal gauges) and with the analysis of depth sounding data. Possible future monitoring by menas of remote sensing techniques will be presented. Some trends, based on water level and morphological monitoring, have been established in the western part of the Dutch Wadden sea: (a) the relative mean sea level is rising persistently by 15 cm/century, observed since the middle of the 19th century. The tidal range is increasing as well; (b) the cross-sectional areas of the most western Dutch Wadden tidal inlets have been increasing over the last two centuries; (c) the intertidal zones of the Texelstroom and Vliestroom tidal basins have shown an increase of surface area over the last decades. The Borndiep tidal basin shows a decrease of 4% of the area shallower than 5 m — Dutch Ordinance Level (DOL) over the last two centuries. Several factors prevent serious predictions about future morphological developments of the tidal Wadden flats: (a) man induced interfering factors, e.g. the construction of the harbour revetments of Den Helder, the construction of the Enclosure Dike and construction of sand drift dikes stabilising the Wadden islands; (b) the limited scope of the present analysis that deals only with the western part of the Dutch Wadden Sea. Herring (Clupea harengus) and sprat (Sprattus sprattus) are the key prey resources of common terns (Sterna hirundo) breeding in the Wadden Sea. Breeding success of the terns has been below average since 2002, coinciding with exceptionally low herring recruitment and sprat abundance. Time series of herring and sprat abundance in the North Sea and in the Wadden Sea were analyzed to explain long-term breeding success and chick development at two common tern breeding colonies. North Sea herring recruitment and sprat abundance in the Wadden Sea explained the largest part of common tern breeding success, both as single variables and in a multiple regression approach. Breeding success showed stronger correlations with herring recruitment indices derived from the North Sea region compared to the Wadden Sea. Also, herring and sprat abundance data explained more variability in breeding success than of more directly responding measures such as growth rate and maximum weight of chicks. Despite spatial and temporal incoherences between fish surveys and the common tern breeding season, breeding success of common terns reflected the abundance of their key prey fish beyond their foraging range and breeding season. We argue that the ecological connectivity between large- and small-scale herring abundance and the responsiveness of common tern breeding success is strong enough to establish a fish–seabird indicator system to be potentially valuable in monitoring and conservation.  相似文献

The Dutch Wadden Sea: a changed ecosystem   总被引:12,自引:4,他引:8
Since 1600 the surface area of the Dutch Wadden Sea decreased considerably by successive reclamations of saltmarshes. In 1932 the Zuiderzee (3200 km2) was closed off from the Wadden Sea causing in the remaining part an increase in tidal range and current velocities. In 1969 the Lauwerszee (91 km2) was closed off and turned into a freshwater lake as well. Man's use of the Wadden Sea changed simultaneously. Dredging in harbours and shipping routes, and extraction of sand and shells became common practice. Extraction of sand increased manifold between 1960 and 1985. These activities did contribute to the turbidity of the Wadden Sea water. Discharge of nitrogen and phosphorus compounds into the western Wadden Sea increased also manifold since 1950, causing an increase in phytoplankton production, duration of phytoplankton blooms, and intertidal macrozoobenthic biomass. Loads of metals and organochlorine contaminants entering the Wadden Sea were hard to estimate. Fisheries changed drastically since the 1930's. Fishing for ‘Zuiderzee’ herring came to an end shortly after closing off the Zuiderzee. The anchovy fishery ceased in the 1960’, that for flounder in 1983. Undersized brown shrimps were fished until 1971. Selective shrimptrawls and sorting devices with flushing seawater were introduced to reduce mortality among young flatfish and shrimps. Oysters became extinct in the 1960's due to over-exploitation of the natural beds. Production of mussels increased more than ten times between 1950 and 1961 due to ‘culturing’, catches of cockles increased slowly between 1955 and 1984. Whelks were fished until 1970. The most important changes in the biotic system of the Wadden Sea, increased production of microalgae and intertidal macrozoobenthos, can be attributed to increased nutrient loads. Eutrophication provided ample food supply for mussels which are harvested mainly by man and eider duck, and may have caused also increased growth in juvenile plaice. Increased turbidity may have impaired life conditions for adult dab, and have presented also recovery of sublittoral eelgrass beds after their disappearance in the 1930's due to the ‘wasting disease’. Increased turbidity in the Wadden Sea is probably caused by closing off the Zuiderzee (1932), a significant increase of dredge spoil disposal near Hoek van Holland between 1970 and 1983, and a more than 10-fold increase of mussel culturing in the Wadden Sea since 1950. Stocks of several bird species breeding in the Wadden Sea area suffered great losses in the early 1960's due to a pesticide accident. Most of the breeding populations have recovered. PCB's caused a reproduction failure among harbour seals in the 1970's. Since 1980 official Dutch policy aims at multiple use of the Wadden Sea, with emphasis on protection and restoration of the natural environment. The 3rd Water Management Plan (1989) aims at a development of the Wadden Sea ecosystem towards the situation of ca. 1930, i.e. without undoing present sea dikes and reclaimed polders. Management of the Dutch Wadden Sea will therefore have to focus mainly on reduction of eutrophication, pollution and turbidity. Some management options are discussed.  相似文献

Monitoring of harbour seal (Phoca vitulina) has been carried out in the Danis part of the Wadden Sea during the past 8 years by the Fishery and Maritime Museum. In addition to this, field observations over three breeding seasons have been undertaken. The census shows a steady increase of approx. 14% per yeart. The distribution of the seals in the area can be split up into two different types of haulout localities, and a varied pattern of haulouts is observed during the year. The mass die-off in 1988 is discussed within the framework of the knowledge on the population, and it is recommended that more effort be put into monitoring and population studies of the harbour seal in the entire International Wadden Sea. Bio-availability of phosphorus in sediments of the western Dutch Wadden Sea   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
The purpose of this study was to make a prognosis of the effects of extended purification of terrestrial waste water, reaching the Wadden Sea by the River Rhine and Lake IJssel, on the phosphate concentration in the western Wadden Sea.The quantities of different phosphorus fractions in intertidal and subtidal sediments of the Marsdiep tidal basin (western Dutch Wadden Sea) were measured. Different methods are applied to determine the amount of phosphorus that can be released from these sediments. The direct bioavailability is determined by inoculating sediment suspensions with a natural mixture of precultured micro-organisms from the sampling area. A second approach is the measurement of the phosphate release under different redox conditions. Sequential extraction of sediment samples with different solvents is also applied. Under the present conditions and compared to the nutrient loads from fresh water (Lake IJssel) and from the North Sea, the phosphorus stored in the sediments of the western Dutch Wadden Sea plays a minor role in the total supply to micro-algae and bacteria. The bulk of the biologically available phosphorus in the sediments originates from the metal-associated fraction. Releasable phosphate may contribute to the local annual primary production to an extent of ca 45 to ca 150 g C m–2 a–1. The total amount of phosphorus in the sediment (mainly calcite associated) is twice to 6 times the biologically available amount.  相似文献

An overview, based on written sources and personal observations, is presented of exploitation of living resources in and around the Dutch Wadden Sea during the past few centuries. It is concluded that before about 1900 exploitation was almost unrestricted. Exploitation of plants has been documented for saltmarshes and eelgrass beds. Fisheries have occurred for two species of hydroids, two species of polychaetes, one echinoderm species, at least seven species of molluscs, three species of crustaceans, and tens of species of fish. Hunting and egg collecting targeted almost all species of birds. Finally, two species of seals were exploited: information on exploitation of cetaceans is not available. Hence, it is likely that overexploitation may have been involved in the extirpation of several species. This supports an earlier suggestion that overexploitation played a part in the disappearance of at least 17 species from the Dutch Wadden Sea. This conclusion is confirmed by the observation that several extirpated species have returned after protective measures were introduced for the Dutch Wadden Sea area.  相似文献

Capsule Seeds of plants from lower salt marsh communities are preferred, with insects less important.

Methods Droppings of Shorelarks Eremophila alpestris, Snow Buntings Plectrophenax nivalis and Twites Carduelis flavirostris sampled in the German Wadden Sea were analysed and compared with food abundance to assess preferences.

Results Shorelarks prefer seeds of Salicornia sp., Suaeda maritima, Atriplex sp., Halimione portulacoides and unidentified small grass seeds. Insects are eaten mainly in periods of seed shortage, but are consumed in smaller amounts during the winter. The food composition of Snow Buntings is very similar, but additionally Triglochin maritimum is commonly eaten. Twites are specialized on seeds of Salicornia sp. and Suaeda maritima and rarely ingest other seeds and insects. All seeds consumed were of plants from lower salt marsh communities. Many halophyte seeds, and especially those that birds feed on, are rich in energy. Large seeds and those which need a long handling time are avoided.

Conclusion Changes in the lower salt marshes of the Wadden Sea by embankments and intensified grazing might have been responsible for the rapid population decline from the 1960s to 1980s.  相似文献

Since the present quality state of the Wadden Sea is judged more discordantly than that of the North Sea, it is examined whether the Wadden Sea is a separate ecosystem. The nutrient load into the Wadden Sea and the trend of the load are assessed. Biological indicators of the ecological state of the Wadden Sea are examined with the result that there are signs of a bad as well as of a good state. This contradiction is assigned to the fact that quality standards are absent. Self-protection mechanisms of the Wadden Sea are discussed with respect to their responsibility for the relatively good state. A qualitative model is proposed to explain the long-term behaviour of the ecosystem.  相似文献

The seasonal and local distribution of fish in the Wadden Sea depends on the various modes of life of each species. To obtain nearly all species of the fish fauna and the stages of development in different spatial regions of the Wadden Sea-shallow and deep channels, puddles and pools, sedimentation fields and tidal flats—it is essential to use different fishing methods synchronously. During a two-year monitoring project in 1986 and 1987 on fish and fisheries in a restricted area of the Wadden Sea of Schleswig-Holstein, five types of fishing gear were used synchronously: handnet, push-net, 2-m beam trawl, commercial shrimp trawl, fyke net. In 822 samples of all gear 33 species were caught. No gear obtained the maximum number of species. Day and night samples show considerably different composition. Furthermore, force and direction of wind have an important effect on the distribution of fish in the coastal area. The advantages and disadvantages of the different gear for monitoring purposes are discussed from scientific and practical viewpoints. The Dutch Wadden Sea has been changed dramatically over the last centuries by human activities like land reclamation and different forms of fishery. This has, amongst other things, led to changes in the number of biological communities. One of the changes was the near extinction of eelgrass (Zostera marina L.) in the Dutch Wadden Sea. The deterioration of the area led to policy plans in the late 1980s that aimed at restoring the original natural communities of which the eelgrass community was one. This paper presents a restoration strategy which contains a selection procedure for suitable transplantation sites. The selection procedure is based on factors such as sediment composition, exposure time, current velocity and wave action. These were combined in a GIS-based map integrating these factors. One important action in the restoration process is to increase the number of freshwater discharge points to meet the requirements of the brackish water community in general and the growing conditions for eelgrass in particular. Since 1950, two large-scale changes have taken place in the western Dutch Wadden Sea, namely the eutrophication of the area and the introduction of an extensive mussel culture. Although eutrophication in the fresh waters started already around 1950, nutrient concentrations in the western Wadden Sea remained fairly constant until about 1970, due to the retention of nutrients in Lake IJssel, the main source. From 1970–1980 concentrations increased strongly, and during the last years the situation has stabilized. Mussel culture was introduced in 1950 and expanded during the next decade to an area of 70 km2, all situated in the sublittoral area. From 1960 the area of mussel culture remained about constant with fluctuating yields of between 35 and 120 millions of kg fresh weight. Due to a lack of data for the period until 1970 the impact of eutrophication and mussel culture on the ecosystem cannot be assessed. From 1970 onwards an increased biomass and production of the macrofauna in the intertidal zone has been observed, which is attributed to eutrophication. The hypothesis is postulated that the introduction of mussel culture between 1950 and 1960 has resulted in an increased food competition in the area, leading to a decreased stock of the macrofauna in the intertidal. Eutrophication from about 1970 onwards has improved the food conditions and as a result both the macrofauna in the intertidal and the mussel in the sublittoral area would have increased in biomass, allowing higher maximum yields of the mussel culture. The importance of monitoring programs is stressed to follow these trends in the near future and to check the above hypothesis in areas where it is decided to introduce or intensify mussel culture. Results are presented of an on-going monitoring program, started in 1970, of the demersal fish population in the Wadden Sea, Scheldt estuary, and along the continental coast between the Belgian-French border and Esbjerg. Particular attention is given to long-term trends in overall abundance and annual variations in spatial distribution of 0- and 1-group plaice and sole in relation to year-class strength and to variations in growth rate. Recruitment level in both plaice and sole appeared to be higher in the 1980s than in the 1970s. The most important nursery areas for plaice are the German Bight and the Wadden Sea, and the relative contributions of these areas to the total plaice stock in different years are relatively stable. In contrast, the most important nurseries for sole are along the continental coast, and the contribution of different parts of these nurseries vary considerably from year to year. Abundant year-classes of sole can originate from northern as well as from southern parts of the nurseries. Relations between survey results and year-class estimates from Virtual Population Analysis (VPA) for plaice are better compared to sole. No trends have been observed in mean length at age 0 and 1 during the years the surveys have been carried out. It is concluded that the quality of the continental coastal area and the Wadden Sea as nursery area for plaice and sole has not declined during the period of investigation. Over the past 20 years, a tradition has developed in western Europe of carrying out shorebird surveys in estuaries. These counts are mostly conducted by amateur ornithologists, usually well acquainted with the area in which they are active. The results of these surveys are well reproducible for at least the abundant species, and information is available on the size of the errors which occur. In several parts of Europe, shorebird surveys have been carried out long enough to allow trend analysis of population size. Four examples from Great Britain demonstrate that monitoring schemes may also be used for management purposes, especially if combined with specific research projects. Long-term shorebird surveys can be used not only for simple analysis of trends in bird numbers, but also to provide a deeper understanding of the functioning of the ecosystem. They may also act as a tool to document the effects of management activities in the area concerned. Shorebird surveys in the Wadden Sea have not only revealed the extremely large importance of the area, especially for waders, but also show that different areas are exploited in different ways. They have also provided data on changes in bird numbers throughout the year. Apart from the counts carried out in January, the frequency of counts in most areas in the Wadden Sea has been too low to allow the results to be used for monitoring purposes. In an area as large as the Wadden Sea, some sites, often supporting large numbers of birds, may not always be covered during simultaneous surveys. This may seriously affect the completeness of the count. The best way to overcome this problem is to calculate index values, using only those sites which have been surveyed in successive years. Two monitoring schemes are proposed which may be effective in providing relevant information for management purposes. A historic perspective on Wadden Sea eutrophication   总被引:6,自引:4,他引:2
In this paper, a reconstruction of the pre-industrial trophic status of the Wadden Sea is presented. A conceptual model is outlined that links the organic matter and nutrient dynamics in the Wadden Sea with riverine nutrient input. Fundamental processes in this model are: a nutrient-limited offshore primary production and the subsequent import of primary produced organic matter from the North Sea into the Wadden Sea. Two approaches have been followed to estimate the production and remineralisation levels under pre-industrial conditions. The first approach is based on present-day relationships between the seasonal cycle of NH4 and NO2 in the western Dutch Wadden Sea and suggests, on average, sixfold lower production and remineralisation rates under pre-industrial conditions (range: four to eight times). The second approach is based on present carbon budgets extrapolated to pre-industrial budgets on the basis of present relationships between winter nutrient concentrations, annual primary production and annual organic matter turnover rates, and suggests a fivefold lower organic matter turnover under pre-industrial conditions (annual primary production: ~55 g C m–2 year–1, annual remineralisation: ~77 g C m–2 year–1). Better pre-industrial light conditions in the Wadden Sea may have allowed a more efficient use of nutrients, a higher annual primary production of about 86 g C m–2 year–1 and annual remineralisation rates of about 108 g C m–2 year–1.  相似文献

Plaice nurseries: effects on recruitment   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The function of coastal nursery areas is discussed in relation to the variability in North Sea plaice recruitment. Since 60% of the recruitment of juveniles originates from the Wadden Sea, special attention is paid to this area. The concentration of juveniles in a restricted area seems to evoke only adverse effects: an increased risk of food limitation and hence reduced growth, and an increased vulnerability to predation. Despite these expectations, growth of most of the plaice in the Wadden Sea has always been optimal within the wide range of year-class strength observed and depends only on ambient water temperature. The same situation is indicated for some British bays, where the growth of 0-group plaice is far lower than in the Wadden Sea, because of lower temperatures. Mortality through predation seems to be relatively low in the Wadden Sea and restricted to only a short period, because of the absence of almost all potential predators. In the more open British bays higher mortalities are found, probably due to the presence of a number of predatory fish species. The low variability in the recruitment of plaice might be the combined result of optimal growth with the absence of between-year fluctuations in predator abundance in the Wadden Sea. As a result, observed mortality only depends on prey abundance and is therefore density-dependent both within one year and especially between years, reducing variations in recruitment. This suggestion is supported by the situation in more open British bays: here too, growth is maximal, but the abundance of predators shows larger fluctuations between years and, as a result, greater fluctuations in mortality are observed.  相似文献
