Very-low-frequency (VLF) atmospherics or sferics are pulse-shaped alternating electric and magnetic fields which originate from atmospheric discharges (lightning). The objective of the study was threefold: (i) to analyse numerous parameters characterizing the sferics activity with regard to their suitability for field studies, (ii) to identify meteorological processes related to the sferics activity and (iii) to investigate the possible association of sferics with pain processes in patients suffering from migraine- and tension-type headaches. Over a period of 6 months (July through December) the sferics activity in the area of Giessen (Germany) was recorded. Three sferics parameters were chosen. The number of sferics impulses per day, the variability of the impulse rate during a day and the variability in comparison to the preceding day were correlated with weather processes (thunderstorm, temperature, vapour pressure, barometric pressure, humidity, wind velocity, warm sector). Significant correlations were obtained during the summer months (July, August) but not during the autumn months (October, November, December). During autumn, however, the sferics activity was correlated with the occurrence of migraine-type headaches (r=0.33, P<0.01) recorded by 37 women who had filled out a headache diary over a period of 6 months (July–December). While the thunderstorm activity was very intense during July and August, no relationship between sferics and migraine was found. In summer, tension-type headaches were associated with meteorological parameters such as temperature (r=0.42, P<0.01) and vapour pressure (r=0.28, P<0.05). Although the sferics activity can explain a small percentage of the variation in migraine occurrence, a direct influence was more likely exerted by visible or otherwise perceptible weather conditions (thunderstorms, humidity, vapour pressure, warm sector, etc.) than by the sferics activity itself. Alternaria spores are found in the atmosphere in many locations around the world. They are significant from a human health perspective because they have been known to trigger allergic respiratory disease such as asthma and hay-fever. The presence of Alternaria spores in the atmosphere has been related to meteorological factors in past studies, but this has not been done previously in Sydney, Australia. This paper reports the results of such a study in Sydney. Alternaria spore concentration data for the period 19 August 1992 to 31 December 1995 were examined with meteorological data for the same period. The daily Alternaria spore concentration was compared to the meteorological data for the same day and for up to 3 days previously. The analysis methods were Spearmans rank correlation and multiple regression. Alternaria spores appear in the atmosphere of Sydney year-round, although they peak over spring, summer, and autumn. A number of meteorological factors, including mean, minimum, and maximum, temperature, dew point temperature, and air pressure, are significantly correlated with the atmospheric concentration of Alternaria spores. Some of these meteorological variables (temperature and dew point temperature) show significant correlations with a 1, 2, and 3 day lag, as well as for the same day. Regression models indicate that up to 31.1% of the variation in Alternaria spore concentration can be explained by meteorological factors. There is potential for the results of this study to be used by public health authorities in the prediction of Alternaria spore concentrations in Sydney.  相似文献

The viscosity of the Price–Brooks modified TIP3P water model is investigated for different temperatures and NaCl concentrations using molecular dynamics with long-range electrostatic interactions. The viscosity has been determined from the equilibrium fluctuations of the pressure tensor by the Green–Kubo formalism. At 298 K in salt-free conditions, the resulting viscosity is higher than the value reported by other authors for TIP3P water. The viscosity is shown to decrease with temperature and increase with salt concentration, such as in real water, but with an absolute value always about half of the experimental value in analogous conditions. This difference must be attributed to the simplicity and the empirical nature of the TIP3P model, and also to the properties chosen for the original parameterisation, which did not include viscosity. At the considered levels of salinity, the effect of temperature is predominant.  相似文献

VLF (Very Low Frequencies)-fields are damped electromagnetic waves of atmospheric origin (sferics). Sferics were artificially produced within a steel-built chamber; blood was drawn and platelet adhesiveness, platelet cyclic AMP and coagulation factors were measured in human volunteers placed within the chamber. Following frequency of the impulses of 10 Hz and a field strength of 400 mV/m increased platelet adhesiveness and decreased platelet cyclic AMP. Medication of the anti-platelet drugs were not effective at all, but the pretreatment of dipyridamole 75 mg combined with acetylsalicylic acid 100 mg blocked the sferics induced increment in platelet adhesiveness. Psychologically labile volunteers exhibited more marked effects of sferics upon platelet adhesiveness. Simulation of stressors upon platelets showed the same effect. The increase in platelet adhesiveness induced by all kind of stressors is not a risk factor of thrombosis in itself. Only if the vessel walls are damaged, e.g. by atherosclerotic plaques, or if the blood flow is reduced, e.g. by heart failure, then the increased platelet adhesiveness will cause thrombosis.Supported by Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft and Landesamt für Forschung NRW.  相似文献

An investigation of the effects of repeated winter harvest and removal of dry reed culms on water and sediment chemistry was made in a shallow lake dominated by closed, monospecific reed stands. The oxygen concentration and redox potential in the water, as well as temperature, showed regular diurnal fluctuations inside the reed stands. Ammonium and nitrate + nitrite did not exhibit diurnal fluctuations and differences between a harvested and an unharvested reed area were small. Molybdate reactive phosphorus (MRP) concentration was higher in the unharvested area.Because the winter harvest caused an almost doubling of shoot production compared to the unharvested area, net addition of reed litter (leaves, stubble and culms) to the sediment of the harvested area was similar to that of the unharvested area. It is concluded that removal of reed culms in winter has the largest effect on microclimate in spring, and that the rate of mineralization and reducing intensity in the substrate are not immediately affected. Significantly higher summer standing crop of reed after harvest may have caused lower phosphate concentration in the water column and sediment interstitial water.  相似文献

O2 transport was examined by measuring the fractional saturation of concentrated hemoglobin solutions flowing through an artificial capillary that was approximately 27 micron in diameter and embedded in a silicone rubber film approximately 170 micron thick. The effects of pH, hemoglobin concentration, O2 tension, temperature, and organic phosphate were measured and analyzed quantitatively by a rigorous mathematical model that included the geometry of the capillary in the silicone film, parabolic flow velocity distributions inside the lumen, and cooperative O2 binding by hemoglobin. The rates of both oxygenation and deoxygenation were limited by diffusion and governed by the magnitude of the O2 gradient between the intracapillary fluid phase and the external gas space. In uptake experiments, O2 flux is determined primarily by the external O2 tension (16-160 mmHg in our experiments) because the internal O2 pressure is kept small due to chemical combination with hemoglobin. In release experiments, the external O2 tension is maintained at zero, and the transport rate is determined by the intracapillary partial pressure of O2 that is proportional to the O2 half-saturation pressure of hemoglobin value of the hemoglobin sample. As a result, factors that change the affinity of hemoglobin for O2, such as pH, temperature, and organic phosphate concentration, influence strongly the rate of O2 release but have little effect on the rate of O2 uptake. These properties are physiologically advantageous, since a decrease in pH or an increase in temperature during exercise increases both the rate and extent of deoxygenation while not altering the kinetics of oxygenation.  相似文献

A quantitative and qualitative study was carried out of the atmospheric fungal propagules in two university buildings in the Campus of Anchieta (La Laguna, Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain) and in the outdoor atmosphere, in order to ascertain the most abundant fungi and the concentration of spores in the air, as possible sources of respiratory allergies caused by this type of aeroallergens. Sampling was carried out using two kinds of traps (Burkard Personal Culture Sampler and Burkard Personal Slide Sampler), as well as adhesive tape. Sample 1, indoor, identified between 650-320 CFU m -3 depending on the culture medium, with outdoor values between 670-440 CFU m -3 ; sample 2, recorded between 630-80 CFU m -3 inside and 580-300 CFUm -3 in the outdoor atmosphere. The most represented genera were Cladosporium and Penicillium , although the following were also identified: Agaricales, Alternaria, Aspergillus, Botrytis, Drechslera, Coprinus, Curvularia, Chaetomium, Exserohilum, Fusarium, Helminthosporium, Leptosphaeria , Myxomycetes, Paecilomyces, Pleospora, Stemphylium, Tetraploa, Torula and Ulocladium .  相似文献

Research into the short-term fluctuations of oxygen concentrations in tree stems has been hampered by the difficulty of measuring oxygen inside tissues. A new method, which is based on fluorescence quenching of a ruthenium complex in the presence of oxygen, has been applied to measure changes of oxygen concentration in the sapwood of trees. During a field day-course oxygen increased with the radiation load and fell during the night (in Fagus orientalis from 20.3% in the afternoon to 17.5% in the morning next day). In a greenhouse experiment the sapwood oxygen concentration of Laurus nobilis could be influenced by flooding the root system. The very fast response, high resolution (better than 0.1%), easy calibration, and dependence only on oxygen and temperature make the technique well suited for measurements of oxygen concentrations in the sapwood.  相似文献

Summary Asbestos containing material (ACM) inside buildings is an important concern for the health of their occupants. In France, for the assessment of airborne asbestos concentrations inside building, we use the indirect TEM measurement method constantly improved from 1978 on. By contrast, in the U.S.A. and UK the direct method is used. We have carried out a study in order to compare mass and numerical concentration fibres from the same samples, the tendency being now to express the results in fibre/litre. Concerning asbestos fibres released from man made mineral fibres (MMMF), optical microscope is used and results are expressed in numerical concentrations. Epidemiological studies of different occupational cohorts suggest that amphibole fibres present a greater health risk than chrysotile. Concerning indoor pollution by mineral wool, the health hazard seems negligible. The appraisal of this public health problem remains to be done. In France, a multidisciplinary study group has been created to provide advices related to corrective actions. Information on this public health problem is expected from the epidemiologic longitudinal survey, still in progress, of a cohort of workers, exposed to ACM in Paris university buildings.  相似文献

The indoor climate of livestock buildings is of importance for the well-being and health of animals and their production performance (daily weight gain, milk yield etc). By using a steady-state model for the sensible and latent heat fluxes and the CO2 and odour mass flows, the indoor climate of mechanically ventilated livestock buildings can be calculated. These equations depend on the livestock (number of animals and how they are kept), the insulation of the building and the characteristics of the ventilation system (ventilation rate). Since the model can only be applied to animal houses where the ventilation systems are mechanically controlled (this is the case for a majority of finishing pig units), the calculations were done for an example of a finishing pig unit with 1000 animal places. The model presented used 30 min values of the outdoor parameters temperature and humidity, collected over a 2-year period, as input. The projected environment inside the livestock building was compared with recommended values. The duration of condensation on the inside surfaces was also calculated. Naked mole‐rats (Heterocephalus glaber) can be extremely long‐lived and are resistant to cancer. Hence, they have been proposed as a model organism for delayed ageing. Adaptation to a constant hypoxic and hypercapnic environment has been suggested as reason for their apparent ability to tolerate oxidative stress. Nevertheless, little is known about the natural habitat to which the species evolved. Naked mole‐rat burrow environments were assessed in Ethiopia and Kenya. Despite reported thermolability of naked mole‐rats, skin temperature upon capture varied (23.7–35.4°C), mostly within the species’ thermoneutral zone, demonstrating their ability to maintain homoiothermy even under wide fluctuations of burrow temperature (24.6–48.8°C) and humidity (31.2%–92.8%), which are far greater than previously reported. Burrow temperature regularly alternates during the daytime and night‐time, driving convective currents that circulate air in the tunnels. Consequently, concentrations of CO2 and O2 in burrows only slightly deviated from surface atmosphere. This contradicts the assumption of constant hypoxia/hypercapnia in subterranean burrows. In addition to diffusion, animal movement and occasional wind‐driven ventilation, our data support the temperature‐driven convective model of circulation. The naked mole‐rat burrow is a relatively normoxic subterranean microenvironment with considerable fluctuations in temperature and humidity.  相似文献

In spore-trapping studies in 1965, conidia of Alternaria porri (Ellis) Neerg. were detected in the atmosphere immediately above onions affected by purple blotch disease. On calm summer days, peak conidium concentration occurred between 08.00 and 14.00 hr., few conidia being trapped between 20.00 and 06.00 hr. On windy days, there were marked increases in concentration. Concentration tended to increase with increasing wind velocity. Increased conidium concentrations were also recorded after rainfall and irrigation, and during spraying operations. Laboratory observations indicate that in A. porri, the attachment of conidium to conidiophore is weakened, if not broken, by movements in the conidial apparatus which occur in response to a decrease in vapour pressure. Possible causes of fluctuations in atmospheric content of A. porri conidia are discussed.  相似文献

In the present communication, the synthesis and characterization of Okra mucilage, a food grade and water-soluble polysaccharide, based-materials are described. Okra mucilage has been modified by grafting acrylamide (AAm) for developing the new green polymeric materials of specialty applications. Grafting has been done under N2 atmosphere using redox initiator and hydrogels were prepared by using N,N-methylenebisacrylamide (NN-MBAAm) as crosslinker. The effect of monomer concentration, initiator concentration, reaction time and temperature in terms of grafting efficiency (%GE), percent grafting (PG) and percent gel (%G) has been investigated. The grafted polymers and hydrogels were characterized by SEM, XRD and FTIR techniques to study various structural aspects. The swelling behavior of the crosslinked polymeric material has also been studied as a function of time, temperature and pH. The application area of these polymers is varied from biomaterials to the wastewater treatment.  相似文献

Although isolation racks are superior to open-type racks in terms of securing breeding conditions for laboratory animals, the contingency-proofing capability of the former has yet to be determined. Therefore, from the view of risk management, we studied the environmental change in isolation racks by forcibly suspending ventilation and air-conditioning and confirming the maximal time length for complete recovery to the original condition after restarting their operations. The isolation racks were placed in a room that was equipped with an independent air-conditioning system. When the inside condition of the racks reached 22-24 degrees C and 59-64% of relative humidity, the air-conditioning and ventilation were forcibly suspended and the subsequent temperature, relative humidity, ammonium and CO2 concentrations in the racks were measured over time. We found that after suspending the air-conditioning and ventilation, it took 40-60 min for temperature, and about 10 min for relative humidity to exceed the maximum values (temperature and relative humidity) referred to in the Showa 58 Nenban Guideline Jikken Doubutsu Shisetsu no Kenchiku oyobi Setsubi (Guidelines of buildings and facilities for experimental animals in Japan; Year 1983 edition). After 17 hr 25 min of the suspension of air-conditioning and ventilation, two rats were found dead. Then, the air-conditioning and ventilation were restarted. It took about 2 hr for temperature, and 50 min for relative humidity to regain the guideline values. The ammonium concentration stayed within the guideline value with a maximum concentration of 2 ppm in the experimental period, whereas the CO2 concentration was found to exceed 9% at the time of animal death.  相似文献

Emergent aquatic macrophytes in vegetated wetlands provide routes for methane (CH(4)) transport from sites of production in oxygen-poor sediments, where CH(4) concentrations are relatively high, to the atmosphere, which typically has much lower CH(4) concentrations. Transport can occur through aerenchymatous tissue via simple diffusion. Recently, the importance of convective throughflow (i.e., mass transport of gases through plants driven by pressure gradients) in enhancing gas transport has been demonstrated in several genera (e.g., Nuphar, Nymphaea, Nelumbo, Typha, and Phragmites). This study was conducted to elucidate the governing plant-mediated gas transport mechanisms in a midlatitude prairie wetland and to determine both their diel and seasonal variations and the importance of environmental controlling factors. Pressures inside culms of the two dominant emergent aquatic macrophytes (Scirpus acutus and Phragmites australis) were measured directly throughout the growing season and on selected days in midseason. Supporting measurements included solar radiation, air temperature, relative humidity, and windspeed. Results indicated pressures inside green healthy culms of Phragmites were above atmospheric pressure by up to 1650 Pa during the day. At night culm pressures were at or slightly above atmospheric. No pressurization was detected in Scirpus. Highest pressures in Phragmites occurred during midseason when biomass and foliage area index were at their maxima (920 g/m(2) and 2.8, respectively). High internal pressures also coincided with periods of high solar radiation (>500 W/m(2)), high temperature (>20°C), and low relative humidity (<60%). Periods of high internal pressures also coincided with periods of high CH(4) efflux from the wetland as measured in concomitant studies. Convective throughflow driven by internal pressure gradients in Phragmites thus explains much of the diel variation in methane efflux previously reported from this wetland.  相似文献

The experimental observations described in this article indicated that a distribution of many different fluctuations is present in a globular protein. These fluctuations were characterized by observation of many natural internal probes such as the labile peptide protons and the aromatic side chains. The conditions which are necessary to get reactions of the internal probes have been discussed in detail. The structural interpretation of the data was facilitated by the development and the use of new NMR techniques which provided the identification of the resonances of all the labile peptide protons. With NOE measurements a distinction between correlated and uncorrelated exchange events was obtained. This enabled us to elucidate the exchange mechanism over a wide range of p2H and temperature and to classify different subsets of fluctuations with respect to their lifetimes. It was further demonstrated that a change of external conditions such as temperature, p2H or pressure can change the distribution of fluctuations in the protein. The mechanisms responsible for rotation of internal aromatic side chains were also found to change with temperature, and mechanistic aspects of these fluctuations were discussed. This demonstration of a manifold of spatial fluctuations in a small protein provides an impression on the kind of fluctuations which have to be expected for larger proteins. When studying protein reactions one should therefore consider the presence of a large number of different, transiently formed, spatial structures available for the partner in the reaction, which may pick out only that structure which will optimally perform a particular reaction with the highest efficiency.  相似文献

Synthesis and validation of crop models for assessment of of the impact of elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration and anticipated global warming on crop production require crop response data obtained under field-like conditions. The temperature gradient chamber (TGC) with the facility for CO2 enrichment allows the creation of various CO2 and temperature regimes for crops over the entire growth period with relatively inexpensive construction and running costs. The TGC develops a temperature gradient along its longitudinal axis using solar energy during the day and heating at night while maintaining the natural diurnal cycle. The temperature gradient and the CO2 concentration in the TGC are regulated by computer control of the air ventilation rate through the TGC and of the CO2 release rate. Longitudinal gradients of CO2 concentration and water vapour pressure deficit of air in the TGC were generally less than 5% and ±0.2 kPa, respectively. A CO2 enrichment experiment on rice in the TGC showed that a doubling of the CO2 concentration markedly enhanced crop dry matter production. Temperature had less effect on dry matter production, although panicle dry weight was greatly decreased at higher temperature as a result of high-temperature-induccd sterility of rice spikelets. Since rice spikclets are most sensitive to high temperature at the moment of flowering, and their flowering habit is highly synchronized with the diurnal courses of environmental conditions, the TGC is a useful tool in understanding rice responses to changes in atmosphere and temperature.  相似文献
