Every week, for 20 weeks, the growth of naturally occurring grain storage fungi on wheat infested with the three commonest British grain storage mites,Acarus siro, Glycyphagus destructor andTyrophagus longior, was compared with that on uninfested wheat.The number of colonies of theAspergillus glaucus group per gram were always less on grain infested with mites than on uninfested grain.Penicillium spp. were also less numerous on grain which was infested withA. siro but did not appear to be affected by the other mites. In contrast, two fungi which are pathogenic to mites,Aspergillus restrictus andWallemia sebi, were more abundant in the presence of certain mites. The former was associated withG. destructor, the latter withG. destructor andA. siro.The three species of mites either feed on theA. glaucus group andPenicillium spp., or inhibit them by an unknown secretion. Pathogenic fungi are probably avoided. Mites are therefore an important variable in studies on fungal growth during grain drying and storage.  相似文献

Summary House-dust flora and fauna were compared in the maritime cool temperate climate (in three degrees of continentality), the mediterranean warm temperate climate, the arctic climate and the tropical climate.An inverse relationship exists between continentality of the temperate climate and the numbers of arthropods and fungi (mesophilic as well as xerophilic) in the dust of the houses.The numbers of arthropods and fungi were lowest in mediterranean and arctic climates, most likely because of the limiting effect of the drier indoor climate. Fungi are more tolerant of dry conditions than house-dust inhabiting mites. Generally the highest numbers of fungal diaspores and arthropods were found in the tropics, where, however, the lowest number of positive samples was also found, especially for the species of the Aspergillus glaucus group and for Wallemia sebi. Maritime cool temperate climate showed the highest numbers of positive samples for fungi and mites.In general, a relationship exists between relative humidity and the density of fungal diaspores and arthropods.Supported by grants no. 294 and 78.30 of the Dutch Asthma Foundation  相似文献

Both house dust and house dust mitesDermatophagoides pteronyssinus contained a wider range of fungi than laboratory mite cultures. In total, nine species of fungi were isolated fromD. pteronyssinus in house dust, and these included three xerophilic species (Eurotium amstelodami, Aspergillus penicillioides andWallemia sebi) commonly found in laboratory cultures ofD. pteronyssinus. It is concluded that mites do interact with a similar range of fungi in natural dust and in laboratory culture, but that the diversity of fungal species in the laboratory is reduced and the density of individual fungal species in culture exceeds that of house dust. In a second experiment, dust samples were incubated at room temperature with 75% relative humidity. The diversity of fungi invariably declined from up to 13 genera to the few species recorded in laboratory culture. This suggests that the dominance of xerophilic fungi in laboratory mite rearings is mediated primarily by low relative humidity, and the exclusion of air-borne spores.  相似文献

The giant Madagascar hissing-cockroach,Gromphadorhina portentosa, and its mite associate,Gromphadorholaelaps schaeferi, constitute an intimate commensalistic symbiosis. While the mite’s very survival is dependent by feeding on cockroach saliva and associated organic debris, the degree that the cockroach benefits from this association is unclear. We investigated the mite’s potential role at regulating surface fungi on the exoskeletons of this insect. Numbers of fungal isolates that resulted were compared between captive-bred cockroaches with and without mites. The mycoflora of both groups consisted of common molds (Alternaria sp.,Aspergillus sp.,Cladosporium sp.,Geotrichum sp.,Mucor sp.,Penicillium sp.,Rhizopus sp.,Trichoderma sp.). The presence of mites reduced the number of isolates by 1/2 in mature females, 1/3 in males, and 1/4 in sixth (final) instar nymphs. Fungus levels continued to drop when mite-free cockroaches were artificially supplemented with mites. A direct correlation was detected between mites and the reduction in the quantity of surface molds up to 20 mites per cockroach. The addition of more mites above 20 per cockroach, even 4x more, had a minimal, but still reducing, effect. Mites regulated all types of fungi, not just a select few taxa. We propose that mites reduce the mycoflora not because they consume fungi, but because mites and molds compete for the same resources in an ecological niche, saliva and organic debris that accumulate in between cockroach’s legs. Cockroaches reared in captivity do not apparently benefit by the removal of surface molds by mites, lending support for a commensalistic symbiosis. This cockroach species has been linked to severe allergic reactions in children, in part, because it harbors antagonistic molds. GivenG. schaeferi’s regulatory role at suppressing fungi, these mites could conceivably impose a small indirect, albeit beneficial role to humans by reducing the amount of fungal inoculum (conidia) that might otherwise be inhaled.  相似文献

Summary Numerous studies suggest the capacity of storage mites (S.M.) to induce IgE-mediated reactions but their etiopathogenetic role in allergic respiratory diseases has not yet been established. Therefore we examined 283 patients affected by rhinitis and/or bronchial asthma resident in urban and rural areas who underwent skin tests and a RAST with a group of allergens including S.M. (Acarus s., Lepidoglyphus d., Glycyphagus d., Tyrophagus p.).The incidence of patients showing a positive reaction to S.M. was evaluated according to their place of residence and work. 48 patients were selected who resulted positive to mites; 28 of them resulted positive to S.M. and pyroglyphid and 5 to S.M. only.The relationship between skin tests and RAST for S.M. positive patients resulted high forL.d. (70%),G.d. (75%),T.p. (80%) and low forA.s. (58%). In RAST positive subjects cross-reactivity withD. ptero was evaluated:A.s. (70%),L.d. (80%),T.p. (75.4%),G.d. (78.9%).Dwelling and place of work of skin and RAST positive patients revealed an equal distribution between urban and rural populations for S.M.; however, while in urban areas the association with pyroglyphid mites is constant, the rare single sensitivities are found only in rural areas and in farmers. From our data it emerges that the allergological diagnostics must use S.M. when considering respiratory diseases of professionally exposed subjects and residents of given areas. An interpretation of their etiologic role, given the frequent association with pyroglyphid mites, will demand further diagnostic data and an identification and purification of the clinically relevant allergens.  相似文献

Based on multilocus phylogenetic analyses (18S, 28S, EF1‐α, SRP54, HSP70, CO1, 10 860 nt aligned), we show that the house dust mite subfamily Guatemalichinae is nested within non‐onychalgine pyroglyphid mites and forms the sister group to the genus Sturnophagoides (bootstrap support 100, posterior probability 1.0). Because high bootstrap support values may be misleading in the presence of incongruence, we evaluate robustness of the Guatemalichinae+Sturnophagoides clade using: (1) internode certainty indices to estimate the frequency of conflicting bipartitions in maximum‐likelihood bootstrap trees, (ii) consensus networks to investigate conflict among different loci; and (iii) statistical hypothesis testing based on information theory, both multi‐scale and regular bootstrap. Results suggest that this grouping is very well supported given the data. The molecular analyses were integrated with detailed morphological study using scanning electron and light microscopy. We suggest that the subfamilial status of Guatemalichinae should be reconsidered, and this lineage should be placed within the subfamily Dermatophagoidinae. The latter subfamily is currently accepted in the literature as a monophyletic group but was here inferred as paraphyletic and was not supported by any morphological synapomorphy. The paraphyly involved the most species‐rich and medically important genus, Dermatophagoides. Our findings suggest the need for a comprehensive revision of the higher‐level relationships of pyroglyphid house dust mites using both DNA sequences and morphology coupled with a broad taxonomic sampling.  相似文献

Ecological observations were made on house dust mites of Kolkata as they form a major part of synanthropic mite community. Dust samples were collected with regard to the abundance of mite in relation to certain socio-ecological parameters like, habitat preference, location of house, construction pattern of house, types of mattresses used and the frequency of cleaning of mattresses. Among two different habitats examined, bed dust contained significantly higher mite population (p < 0.01) than the corresponding bedroom floor dust. The density of total mites and glycyphagids are significantly higher in rural houses in comparison to those of urban houses. In contrast, rural houses contained least number of pyroglyphids/g of dust. The density of total mites as well as pyroglyphid mites/g of dust are higher in mud house in comparison to concrete house. The density of total mites, pyroglyphids and glycyphagids are higher in cotton mattress in comparison to that of foam mattress. The frequency of cleaning has a significant effect on reducing mite densities i.e., the more the frequency of cleaning the lesser are the mite densities.  相似文献

Abstract. In this report the widely-held view that house dust mites benefit from fungal contamination of the dietary substratum is re-examined. The performance of Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (Acari: Pyroglyphidae) is documented over two successive generations in the presence or absence of the xerophilic fungus Aspergillus penicillioides (Hyphomycetales: Moniliaceae). This fungus reduced survival, development rate, adult length and fecundity of D.pteronyssinus. Detrimental effects of A.penicillioides were proportional to the fungal density. Despite the antagonistic effects of A.penicillioides, a requirement for the fungus was indicated by the poor performance of fungus-free mites in the second generation; sustained culture of D.pteronyssinus in the absence of fungi is probably not possible. It is suggested that fungi may alter the particulate nature of the substratum to the detriment of house dust mites, but also provide micronutrients deficient in the diet.  相似文献

Results of a study on the diffusion of keratinophilic fungi in an Antarctic environment are given. Nine soil samples collected from as many sites along the coast of Ross Sea, and six dust samples inside the Italian scientific base were examined by direct inoculation and hair baiting methods for soil samples and plate dilution method for dust samples. As regards the variety of species isolated and the counting of the numbers of colonies, plate dilution method proved to be very effective.Aspergillus spp.,Cladosporium sp., Dematiaceae,Fusarium sp.,Geomyces pannorum v.pannorum, G. pannorum v.vinaceus, Mycelia sterilia,Penicillium spp. were isolated from soil. From the dust the following moulds were isolated:Aphanoascus fulvescens, Aspergillus sp.,Beauveria sp.,Chrysosporium carmichaelii, Dematiaceae, Geomyces pannorum v.pannorum, G. pannorum v.vinaceus, Malbranchea gypsea, Mycelia sterilia, Nectria inventa, Penicillium spp.,Scopulariopsis brevicaulis, Scopulariopsis sp. andTrichophyton mentagrophytes. The presence of four colonies ofTrichophyton mentagrophytes is emphasized and correlated with the anthropization process.  相似文献

The objective of the present study is to investigate the caffeine-degrading abilities of different fungi and to apply this knowledge to environmental remediation and industrial decaffeination process. Chrysosporium keratinophilum, Gliocladium roseum, Fusarium solani, and Aspergillus restrictus were isolated from the coffee pulp obtained from a coffee estate. Pure cultures of fungi were isolated on standard conventional potato dextrose broth (PDB) medium and authenticated. Pure cultures were subjected to a caffeine tolerance study at different concentrations of caffeine (1–8 g/L) in potato dextrose agar (PDA) and minimal media. On PDA, Fusarium solani could tolerate caffeine concentration up to 8 g/L, whereas Chrysosporium keratinophilum, Gliocladium roseum, and Aspergillus restrictus could tolerate up to 6 g/L. On minimal agar medium containing different concentrations of caffeine (1–8 g/L), Fusarium solani tolerated up to 8 g/L and the other fungi up to 2 g/L. A time-bound caffeine degradation study was undertaken at 1 g/L concentration of caffeine and glucose in nitrogen-containing and nitrogen-free liquid minimal media by subjecting the four fungi to shake flask culture at 120 rpm and 30°C. Degradation of caffeine up to 7 days at 24-h intervals was analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Gliocladium roseum followed by Aspergillus restrictus showed maximum degradation of caffeine at 0.47 and 0.3 mg/ml, respectively, by 96 h in nitrogen-containing minimal medium, whereas Fusarium solani showed maximum degradation of caffeine by 48 h (0.35 mg/ml) and Chrysosporium keratinophilum by 72 h (0.29 g/ml). In nitrogen-free minimal medium, Chrysosporium keratinophilum showed maximum degradation of caffeine at 72 h (0.45 mg/ml), followed by Gliocladium roseum, Fusarium solani (0.3 mg/ml), and Aspergillus restrictus (0.25 mg/ml) at 96 h. Overall, Chrysosporium keratinophilum showed a comparatively higher rate of caffeine degradation in minimal medium with or without a nitrogen source as compared with the other three fungi, indicating that nitrogen affects caffeine metabolism.  相似文献

The isolation of obligate halophilic aspergilli from the Dead Sea and the range of salt tolerance of halophilic fungi isolated, are reported here for the first time. The mycobiota of the Dead Sea isolated in this study, was dominated by Aspergillus and Penicillium species; Cladosporium were found in lesser numbers. All three genera were obtained from the water sample; however, Aspergillus was the only genus obtained from the sediment. There was significant difference in growth of each isolate at different salt concentrations and intraspecies analysis revealed dissimilarity in response of strains to different salt concentrations in the growth medium The isolates were euryhaline, with halotolerance up to 20–25% solar salt, Aspergillus and Penicillium species showing a higher level of halotolerance, as compared to that of Cladosporium. Halophilic fungi were found in greater numbers in the sediment sample as compared to that in the water sample. Penicillium and Cladosporium species were exclusively facultative halophiles, while some species of Aspergillus were facultative halophiles. All the obligate halophiles isolated, belonged to the genus Aspergillus and were identified as A. penicillioides and A unguis, the latter being a first record of the species from the Dead Sea.  相似文献

The air-borne fungi were studied in one hundred and fifty-six exposures made over one year at two levels (2 meter and 20 meter). Aspergillus was the only air-borne fungus identified at 45 °C. It was recovered in 33.3% and 28.2% of the exposures and was represented by four species at low level and three at high level.A. fumigatus was extremely dominant and constituted 76.4% abd 73.3% of the total count of fungi at the low and the high levels respectively.  相似文献

Puroindolines (PINs) are the main components of the wheat grain hardness locus (Ha) and have in vitro antimicrobial activity against bacteria and fungi. Here, we examined the effect of variation in PINA and/or PINB content upon Penicillium sp. seed fungal growth inhibition. The Penicillium sp. assays were germination assays performed after incubating seeds in Penicillium sp. contaminated soil. The first set of wheat genotypes consisted of two sets of transgenic isolines created in the varieties ‘Bobwhite’ and ‘Hi‐Line’ having over‐expression of PINA and/or PINB. The second set of genotypes consisted of near‐isogenic lines (NILs) varying for mutations in PINA or PINB created in the varieties ‘Explorer’ and ‘Hank’. After incubation in Penicillium sp.‐infected soil, transgenic wheat seeds over‐expressing PINA in both ‘Hi‐Line’ and ‘Bobwhite’ and both PINs in ‘Hi‐Line’ exhibited significantly reduced fungal infection and increased germination. No significant differences in Penicillium sp. infection or germination rates were observed in seeds of the NILs. The results indicate that puroindolines native role in seeds is to increase seed viability and that when over‐expressed as transgenes, the puroindolines are effective antifungal proteins.  相似文献

An extensive survey of filamentous fungi isolated from wheat grown and consumed in Lebanon and their capacity to produce aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) and ochratoxin A (OTA) was conducted to assess fungi potential for producing these toxins in wheat. From the 468 samples of wheat kernel, collected at preharvest stage from different locations during 2008 and 2009 cultivation seasons, 3,260 fungi strains were isolated with 49.4% belonging to Penicillium spp. and 31.2% belonging to Aspergillus spp. Penicillium spp. was detected on wheat samples with a high amount of P. verrucosum (37.0%). Among the different Aspergillus spp. isolated, A. niger aggregate was predominant and constituted 37.3%. whereas the isolation rate of A. flavus and A. ochraceus was 32.2 and 25.6%, respectively. The ability to produce OTA and AFB1 by isolates belonging to Aspergillus spp. and Penicillium spp. was analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detector (HPLC-FLD). It was found that 57.0% of Penicillium spp. and 80% of A. ochraceus isolates tested produced OTA, respectively, at maximum concentrations of 53 and 65 μg/g CYA. As for the aflatoxinogenic ability, 45.3% of A. flavus produced AFB1, with maximum concentration of 40 μg/g CYA. A total of 156 wheat samples were analyzed for the levels of OTA and AFB1 by HPLC-FLD. The results showed that 23.7% were contaminated with OTA, at a concentration higher than 3 μg/kg and 35.2% of these samples were contaminated with AFB1 at concentration higher than 2 μg/kg. The risks originating from toxin levels in wheat produced in Lebanon should be monitored to prevent their harmful effects on public health.  相似文献

Allergenic mites are responsible for inducing hypersensitive reactions in genetically predisposed people worldwide. Mites in dust from 30 Irish homes with pets (dogs, n = 23; cats, n = 7) were compared with those in 30 homes without pets. House dust mites constituted 78% of all mites recorded, with Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (Acariformes: Pyroglyphidae) representing 57–72% of mites in furniture and mattresses in both home types compared with only 22% of mites in pet beds. Although storage mites accounted for just 13% of all mites recorded, they represented 46% of mites recorded in pet beds. Median levels of the dust mite allergen Der p 1 (µg/g) in dust samples from mattresses in homes without pets were significantly greater than in mattresses from homes with pets, reflecting the greater densities of D. pteronyssinus found in the former home category. Mite species richness was greater in homes with pets (17 species) than in homes without pets (13 species). This suggests that although the presence of pets can result in a wider variety of epidemiologically important mite species within households, increased competition among mite species may result in a more balanced mite fauna in the home, inhibiting the dominance of any one species and hence lowering allergen‐associated risks.  相似文献

Summary We deal with a new variety ofAspergillus which we callAspergillus gracilis Bainiervar. sartoryi (Biourge) Batista, Lima and Vital.This variety appears to be very important under the phylogenetic point of view, apparently being an intermediate form betweenAspergillus andPenicillium.Its morphology resemblesA. gracilis but the conidia characteristics are distinct; we took the epithetsartoryi fromA. sartoryi Biourge which was not described by the respective author.We suggest, too, the transfer of the seriesA. restrictus, where we put our new variety, from the groupA. glaucus, to become independant, as a connective series in the phylogenetic development betweenAspergillus andPenicillium, since the type of the series and the other elements that it embraces does not produce sclerotia or cleistothecia and the conidial apparatus offers curious similarity toPenicillium. Besides, some fungi of the series grow well in certain culture media, in complete discordance with the members of the groupA. glaucus.

The ability of Penicillium sp. and Trichoderma viride to retard the decay of obeche (Triplochiton scleroxylon) wood in the field for 11 months (January–November) covering dry and wet seasons in a tropical environment was investigated using the ‘graveyard’ method. Inoculation of stakes with Gloeophyllum sp. or G. sepiarium (decay fungi) 24 h after treatment with T. viride or Penicillium sp. in January (dry season) did not increase decay after 11 months. Total inhibition of the decay fungi was indicated since the low weight losses of stakes was not markedly different from losses in control stakes biologically treated but not exposed to decay fungi. Inhibition of the activities of other unidentified field fungi was also indicated because weight losses were greater in uninoculated and untreated stakes. However, decay occurred in stakes biologically treated in January but later exposed to decay fungi in May, after the dry season. A repeat application of T. viride treatment in May, to stakes earlier treated in January, markedly reduced decay following exposure to decay fungi in September (wet season). A similar Penicillium sp. application was not as effective as T. viride application because unlike the T. viride protected stakes, decay was greater in stakes twice protected with Penicillium sp. but not exposed to decay fungi. The results indicate that repeated application of biocontrol agents may be important for controlling wood decay following the adverse effect of the dry season.  相似文献

A single-step spraying of wheat during shooting under field conditions with solutions of CCC (chlorocholine chloride), CCC and urea, CCC and Aminex (ammonium salt of 4-chloro-2-methylphenoxyacetic acid), or CCC, urea and Aminex caused changes both in numbers and composition of the rhizosphere mycoflora. The numbers both in the rhizosphere of differently treated plants and in the free soil decreased during vegetation. A more pronounced effect in the number of fungi was demonstrated in plants treated only with CCC. The difference was more considerable during first 10 days after the spray. As far as the relative occurrence of individual genera in the rhizosphere soil is concerned, fungi of the generaPenicillium Link ex Fr.,Fusarium Link ex Fr.,Verticillium Nees andTrichoderma Pers were most influenced after the treatment with the used agents.  相似文献

This survey is concerned only with filamentous fungi living in the soil layer. The observed diversity of soil fungi largely depends on the method used and the numbers of isolates obtained. Particle-plating usually yields higher numbers of taxa than dilution plating. The Centraalbureau voor Schimmelcultures (CBS) preserves a great diversity of soil fungi. The CBS database contained 2,210 species of soil fungi in 2001, an estimated 70% of the known species available in culture. Thus, the current estimate for described culturable soil fungi is approximately 3,150 species, many of which have a cosmopolitan distribution. Adding the ca. 150 spp. of nonculturable Glomerales results in 3,300 species of currently known soil fungi. Molecular studies in such groups as Fusarium, Trichoderma, Penicillium, and Aspergillus are finding a number of more narrowly distributed cryptic species. Thus the number of species of soil fungi is expected to be considerably higher than the 3300 species currently known.  相似文献

During two warm, dry seasons (1975 and 1976) aphid-pathogenic species of Entomophthoraceae introduced into Aphis fabae populations on field beans established briefly but failed to spread. In cool moist seasons (1977 and 1978), the fungi, principally Erynia neoaphidis and Neozygites fresenii, spread more rapidly in treated than untreated plots. In 1977, the maximum aphid population in plots treated with fungi reached a mean of 9000/plant on 19 July compared with 16 000/plant 1 wk later in untreated plots. The corresponding yield of beans in treated plots was twice that in untreated plots though only half that in plots kept free of aphids with pirimicarb. In two experiments in 1978, the maximum aphid population in treated areas was 700/plant, half that in untreated areas and 1 to 2 wk earlier. Yields from treated plots, however, were not significantly different from those from untreated plots. In nature, the fungi attack A. fabae populations in England only after they have become damaging, partly because fungal inoculum is sparse when the aphid population is small.  相似文献
