A detailed examination of the cervical canal in the ewe was carried out. This analysis could be used to design new catheters for artificial insemination (AI) to achieve deeper cervical penetration and therefore better fertility results. Three hundred and sixty-five cervices from four sheep breeds (Churra, Assaf, Merino, Castellana) obtained postmortem were used. Cervix morphometry and depth of cervical penetration using two types of catheters were determined. A conventional straight catheter for ovine artificial insemination (IMV), and a bent catheter, ending in a stainless steel needle, 9 cm in length and with an 8 mm tip bent 45 degrees , were used. The results showed that the morphometry of the cervix depends on breed and age of the ewe. The cervices of Churra breed were shorter and narrower, and had a higher number of folds than those of other breeds. Postmortem cervical penetration was deeper when the cervices were longer and wider, and with fewer folds (Merino and Castellana breeds). In ageing ewes, the cervix tended to become longer and wider, with loose folds. This decreased structural complexity and significantly improved cervical penetration. The bent catheter allowed significantly greater cervical penetration than the straight IMV one.  相似文献

Pregnancy rate following artificial insemination (AI) in sheep is variable depending on several factors. The Churra breed (milk breed of the North-West of Spain) yields lower fertility results compared with other local and European breeds (Manchega, Latxa, Merino, Lacaune, Sarde, etc.). In this work we studied the influence of many factors on the fertility of the Churra breed (insemination technique, year, farm, age, male, number of inseminations per ewe, lambing-insemination interval and technician), analyzing lambing data obtained after 44448 inseminations (39.67% cervical AI via vagina, AIV, and 60.33% intrauterine AI using laparoscopy, AIL) in a categorical model. The most important factors influencing fertility after AI were farm, year, season, AI technique, and technician. AIL showed significantly higher fertility results than AIV (44.89% versus 31.25%). Season significantly affected fertility in both cases, but differences were more evident in AIV. Fertility dropped 1.74% (AIV) and 2.07% (AIL) per year as the ewes aged. Finally, AI fertility decreased when the lambing-insemination interval was lower than 10 weeks.  相似文献

A transcervical technique (the Guelph System for transcervical AI) was used to inseminate 2060 ewes on 65 farms (average 31 ewes, range 5 to 107) in Ontario, Canada, from October 1990 to September 1992, using previously frozen semen. Estrus was synchronized using progestagen pessaries and PMSG with median inseminations done at 54 h from pessary removal. Maiden ewes were not included. Only ewes in which the cervix could be penetrated were inseminated with 150 million spermatozoa per insemination. A total of 1809 were penetrated and inseminated (penetration rate 87.8%). Success of penetration increased from 76.3% in the first 500 ewes to 97.9% in the last 500 (P=0.01). Cervical penetration was more successful in ewes in the accelerated lambing program (92.3%, average 3.1 mo since the previous lambing) than those in the annual lambing program (82.4%, average 7.0 mo since the previous lambing; P=0.06). The lambing rate for ewes bred during the combined traditional breeding seasons (Fall of 1990, 1991, 1992) was 50.7% compared to 24.4% for ewes bred at other periods (P=0.00001). The average time required for handling and insemination decreased from 8.62 min in the first 500 ewes to 3.62 min in the last 500 ewes. The Guelph System for Transcervical AI was found to be successful for cervical penetration in most ewes. Penetration success was affected by period since the last lambing and by inseminator experience. The lambing rate was higher for ewes bred during the traditional Fall breeding seasons than during other times of the year.  相似文献

The lambing rate obtained following cervical artificial insemination (AI) with frozen semen in sheep is low mainly due to the inability of frozen-thawed sperm to traverse the tortuous nature of the cervical canal. Although acceptable fertility has been attained by circumventing the cervical barrier through laparoscope aided intrauterine AI, the emphasis is currently given on the development of alternate non-invasive transcervical AI procedures. The complex anatomy of the cervix does not facilitate easy transcervical passage for an insemination catheter. The aim of the present study was: (i) to examine the gross anatomy of the cervix in slaughtered ewe lambs and adult ewes of the native Malpura and Kheri breeds raised under semi-arid tropical environment; and (ii) to cast silicone moulds of the reproductive tracts for measuring the dimensions of the cervix. Eighty reproductive tracts were excised immediately from carcass of Malpura and Kheri ewes and the external os of each one was classified depending on their appearance as duckbill, spiral, rosette or flap. The cervical canal of each tract was filled with a silicone sealant for casting the mould. Fifty complete silicone moulds were obtained representing 25 from ewe lambs and 25 from adult ewes. The mean lengths of the cervical mould of ewe lambs and adult ewes were 3.8+/-0.12 and 5.3+/-0.15 cm, respectively. The average number of funnel shaped folds in the cervical mould of ewe lambs and adult ewes were 3.2+/-0.19 and 3.4+/-0.22. However, the second and third-folds from the os were observed to be accentric in both ewe lambs and adult ewes. The information generated in this study would be useful for increasing the success rate of penetration in ewes exhibiting estrus in order to improve the lambing rate of tropical ewes following transcervical AI.  相似文献

Intrauterine insemination by laparoscopy is required to achieve acceptable lambing rates in ewes when using frozen semen but the procedure has evoked welfare concerns. Oxytocin has been used to dilate the cervix as a means of accessing the uterus during conventional cervical insemination, but its effect on fertility is not well documented. Three hundred crossbred ewes were synchronised in estrus and randomly allocated to one of three insemination procedures using frozen/thawed semen containing 400 x 10(6)/ml progressively motile sperm: single cervical (0.2 ml), multiple cervical (4 x 0.05 ml) or laparoscopic (0.05 ml per uterine horn). The effects of each insemination procedure on lambing rate (percentage of treated ewes lambing) and litter size (lambs per ewe lambing) were tested with and without oxytocin (10 IU given i.m.) prior to fixed-time insemination. Oxytocin did not permit complete cervical penetration in any ewes and neither lambing rate nor litter size was influenced by the number of inseminations. Lambing percentages were 69 and 42 (P < 0.01) for the laparoscopic and cervical insemination methods, respectively, and oxytocin reduced these to 58 (NS) and 10 (P < 0.001) percent, respectively. Corresponding litter sizes for ewes not receiving oxytocin were 1.91 and 1.51 and for those receiving oxytocin, 1.83 and 1.41 (laparoscopic versus cervical, P < 0.02). Thus, in the absence of complete cervical penetration at insemination, 10 IU oxytocin decreased the number of ewes lambing but had no effect on their litter size.  相似文献

Field results of 18,328 cervical artificial inseminations (AI) with cooled semen in Rasa Aragonesa meat sheep under field conditions in north-eastern Spain AI were analyzed. Logistic regression procedures were used including fertility at AI as the dependent variable (measured by lambing, 0 or 1) and year, month of AI, farm, hours between extraction and insemination, number of ewes inseminated in a set of AI, parity, lambing-treatment interval, total number of synchronization treatment per ewe, inseminating ram and AI technician as independent factors. Previous parturitions, lambing-AI interval, month, farm, inseminating ram and technician were factors with significant impact on AI fertility. Based on the odds ratio, the likelihood of pregnancy decreased: in ewes with more than five previous parturitions (by a factor of 0.87, 0.79 and 0.66 for the 6th, 7th and ≥8 parturitions, respectively); in ewes with lambing-AI interval higher than 240 days (by a factor of 0.8); and for inseminations performed during the spring period, (March, April, May and June, 0.70, 0.76, 0.66, and 0.76, respectively). We noted a higher fertility in seven inseminating rams (odds ratios between 1.4 and 1.7) and lower in two rams (odds ratios between 0.6 and 0.7). Of the 17 AI technicians, two were related to fertilities improved by odds ratio of 1.6, and 1.30, whereas two technicians were attributed fertility rates reduced by odds ratios of 0.68 and 0.40. These findings should be taken into account to evaluate the AI technique performance and make decisions to enhance fertility results.  相似文献

We studied the influence of two different extenders, a milk-based versus a TRIS-based extender, using a split-sample technique, on fertility after single and double vaginal inseminations in natural estrous in Norwegian Crossbred ewes. Semen from 21 Norwegian Crossbred rams, all aged approximately 0.5 years, was used for AI of totally 561 Norwegian Crossbred ewes housed at 37 different farms. The farmers performed the inseminations themselves. The ewes were allocated to four parallel groups based on the two extenders and single or double inseminations (2 x 2). The farmers were recommended to inseminate the ewes between 12 and 24 h after detection of natural standing estrous. Vaginal insemination with cooled liquid semen diluted in the milk-based extender resulted in a statistically significant (P<0.01) better fertility of about 10% units both as 25-day NR (non return rate)-and lambing rates, compared with semen diluted in the TRIS-based extender. Double inseminations gave significantly higher (P=0.03) fertility results for both extenders expressed as 25-day NR results, but was not quite statistically significant when expressed as lambing rates (P=0.06) compared with single insemination. The overall 25-day NR results for the milk-based extender (66.4%) after single inseminations is in accordance with both the national results (67.1%) based on vaginal inseminations of 11,377 ewes, as well as with the results from a previous study in the same region achieving a 25-day NR results of 63.3%. In conclusion, liquid ram semen diluted in a milk-based extender and vaginally inseminated once in natural heat, with a semen dose of 150 x 10(6) spermatozoa, gave acceptable fertility results and is to be recommended as the method of choice in Norway.  相似文献

Suckling lamb meat is traditionally produced in Mediterranean Europe. Breed can affect the quality of the lamb carcass and meat. This study is aimed at comparing the carcass and meat quality between suckling lambs from a local and a non-native dairy breed, Churra and Assaf. Churra is included in the Spanish Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) ‘Lechazo de Castilla y León’, whereas Assaf is not. However, Assaf breeders have requested the inclusion of the breed in the PGI. Carcasses and meat from 16 male lambs (eight Churra and eight Assaf) were used in this study. The lambs were all raised under an intensive rearing system and fed on a milk substitute to minimise maternal influence. The carcasses were evaluated for conformation, fatness, joint and leg tissue proportions and the meat was analysed for composition (i.e. proximate composition, iron, haematin, fatty acids and volatiles) and technological quality traits (i.e. texture, water holding capacity, colour and lipid stability). Churra carcasses were larger than Assaf carcasses. However, the proportions of commercial joints and main tissues did not differ between breeds. Cavity and intermuscular leg fat, but not total leg fat, were higher in Churra carcasses. Churra meat showed a higher proportion of n-6 fatty acids, higher redness and better colour stability during aerobic storage. In contrast, Assaf lamb was more resistant to lipid oxidation after cooking. This is a preliminary study to measure the influence of breed on a wide range of quality characteristics in Churra and Assaf suckling lamb carcass and meat. It may be of relevance for breeders, consumers and food policy makers, setting the basis for future studies that include larger commercial populations.  相似文献

The effect of carazolol on the ease of penetrating the cervix during artificial insemination, lambing rate and litter size was studied using 1.5–4.0-year old Kivircik ewes in an incomplete 3 × 2 × 2 experimental design. All of the ewes in this study were synchronized for oestrus by insertion of a progesterone impregnated vaginal sponge for 12 days and administration of 400 IU PMSG at sponge withdrawal. Three methods of service were compared: natural service, artificial insemination (AI) with fresh semen, or AI with frozen semen. Two times of insemination (fixed time AI versus AI at observed oestrus) were compared on the fresh and frozen AI treatments. The absence (control) or use of carazolol (carazolol; 0.5 mg/ewe i.m. 30 min before mating) was the third factor in the design and penetration of the cervix by the insemination pipette was assessed as shallow (<10 mm), middle (10–20 mm) or deep (>20 mm). Natural service ewes were only mated at observed oestrus. Consequently, the factorial design was incomplete and there were a total of 10 treatments each represented by 30 ewes. Natural service resulted in a significantly (P < 0.05) higher lambing rate and litter size (86%; 2.0 ± 0.05 lambs/ewe) than AI using fresh (65%; 1.6 ± 0.1 lambs/ewe) or frozen (40%; 1.4 ± 0.14 lambs/ewe) semen. For AI animals the lambing rate and litter size were not significantly different when service was at a fixed time (50%; 1.5 ± 0.12 lambs/ewe) or at observed oestrus (56%; 1.5 ± 0.12 lambs/ewe). Carazolol did not permit complete cervical penetration in any ewe. Deep penetration of the cervix at AI was achieved in 33% of untreated (control) and 48% of carazolol treated ewes (P < 0.05). However, the proportion of ewes in which penetration of the cervix and semen deposition was greater than shallow was similar for control (82%) and carazolol (85%), and lambing rate and litter size were similar for both treatments. Over the three service methods, the lambing rate was 56% for control and 63% for carazolol (NS) and litter size was similar for both treatments. It was concluded that the carazolol treatment used prior to natural mating or AI in this experiment did not improve lambing rate or litter size in Kivircik ewes.  相似文献

In two trials involving the artificial insemination of 194 ewes, the fertility of ram semen was examined following freezing, either in pellet form or in straws, and after storage in a chilled state (15 degrees C) for up to 16 hours. Estrus was synchronized in ewes by intravaginal sponge (MAP) treatment for 14 days. At sponge removal 600 IU PMSG was injected and the ewes received two inseminations 50 and 60 hours later. Fertility was assessed at lambing. In trial 1, the mean lambing rate of 52% (16 31 ) for semen frozen in pellets was higher than 29% (9 31 ) for semen frozen in straws but this difference was not significant. In trial 2, ewes inseminated with chilled semen and semen frozen in pellets had lambing rates of 83% (44 53 ) and 55% (44 79 ) respectively (P<0.001).  相似文献

Ram semen was prepared in a buffered glucose-saline solution containing 3% (v/v) egg yolk so that insemination doses of 25 or 100 million spermatozoa in volumes of 50 or 250 μl could be given per ewe at artificial insemination (AI). Fertility was significantly reduced by dilution and, within the treatments of diluted semen, significantly higher lambing rates followed the use of doses of 100 million spermatozoa. The volume of the AI dose had no significant effect on fertility.Of 945 inseminations performed using diluted semen, 388 were with samples that had been cooled to 5°C and stored chilled for 5 or 18 hr. The mean lambing result of 40% for freshly diluted semen was significantly higher than 31.6% and 30.2% for samples stored chilled for 5 and 18 hr respectively. Ewes inseminated with doses of chilled semen containing 25 million spermatozoa had a low lambing rate of 21.3%. The presence of 7.5% glycerol (v/v) in the diluent did not significantly affect the fertility of chilled semen.  相似文献

We compared conventional methods for laparoscopic and cervical artificial insemination (AI) to a transcervical AI procedure (Guelph System for Transcervical AI; GST-AI) for use with frozen semen in Merino ewes. The GST-AI procedure was performed by an experienced operator in Experiment 1 (771 ewes) and by 2 inexperienced operators in Experiment 2 (555 ewes). In Experiment 1, intrauterine insemination by GST-AI was achieved in 76% of the ewes. The pregnancy rate at Day 70 for ewes inseminated by laparoscopy (48%, 120 251 ) was higher (P<0.01) than for ewes inseminated by either intrauterine GST-AI (32%, 64 201 ) or cervical AI (9%, 24 256 ). The overall (intrauterine and intracervical) pregnancy rate for GST-AI was 26% (68 264 ) and was unaffected by depth of insemination within the cervix. Pregnancy rates were unaffected by ram or day of insemination. In Experiment 2, the operators achieved intrauterine inseminations by GST-AI in 43% (78 182 ) of the ewes, with a significant operator effect (P<0.01) on depth of cervical penetration. The pregnancy rate to intrauterine GST-AI (40%, 31 78 ) did not differ from that to laparoscopic insemination. The total pregnancy rate for GST-AI in Experiment 2 (19%, 34 182 ) was lower (P<0.05) than that for laparoscopic AI (39%, 72 187 ) but superior (P<0.05) to that for cervical AI (1%, 1 186 ). The GST-AI pregnancy rates were affected by depth of AI (P<0.01) and by operator (P<0.05). It is concluded that GST-AI is superior to cervical AI, and may have application in Merinos if cervical penetration rates can be improved.  相似文献

The effects of the 1 29 translocation upon male fertility were studied by analysis of the results of 1 350 385 first artificial inseminations with the semen of Blonde d'Aquitaine or Coopelso-93 bulls (n=220). A binomial logit model was designed, taking into account the translocation of sire, breed of sire, breed of dam, year, AI center, and all interactions between translocation, and breed of sire, and breed of dam. Male fertility was not affected by the 1 29 translocation, and the nonreturn rates at 60 to 90 days of Blonde d'Aquitaine females inseminated with the semen of carrier bulls (135 632 first AI) or noncarrier bulls (585 949 first AI) were 74.88% and 74.75%, respectively.  相似文献

At present, the Assaf is the main dairy sheep in Spain. The Spanish Assaf (Assaf.E) was formed by male-mediated absorption of native Spanish sheep. Here we assess the genetic relationships among the Assaf.E and major native Spanish dairy breeds using microsatellites to contribute to the knowledge of the formation and within-population genetic variability of the breed. Blood samples from 44 unrelated Assaf.E individuals from 23 different Assaf.E flocks spread throughout 6 different Spanish provinces were obtained and genotyped using 14 microsatellites. Up to 312 additional samples belonging to the Awassi and Milchschaf sheep breeds and to six native Spanish dairy sheep breeds (Castellana, Churra, Latxa, Manchega, and Rubia de El Molar) as well as samples from Merino individuals to be used as the outgroup were also analysed observed (Ho) and expected (He) heterozygosity, rarefacted number of alleles per locus and distances based on molecular coancestry information were computed. Probabilities of assignment of the Assaf.E individuals to native Spanish dairy sheep breeds and cryptic genetic structure in the whole dataset were also assessed. It can be concluded that the Assaf.E breed has low genetic variability and high genetic distance with respect native Spanish dairy sheep breeds. From our results, the formation of the Assaf.E breed basically occurred via the absorption of individuals belonging to the Entrefino type, particularly to the Castellana and Manchega populations. Furthermore, Churra individuals may have participated in the formation of the Assaf.E breed at an early moment of the introduction of the breed into Spain.  相似文献

This study was carried out to examine the impact of several climate variables on the pregnancy rate after cervical artificial insemination (AI) of Rasa Aragonesa ewes. Data were derived from 8,977 inseminations in 76 well-managed flocks performed during the first month of the breeding season (July to October). The following data were recorded for each animal: farm, year, month of AI, parity, lambing–treatment interval, inseminating ram, AI technician, and climatic variables such as mean, maximum and minimum temperature, mean and maximum relative humidity, rainfall, and mean and maximum temperature–humidity index (THI) for each day from day 12 before AI to day 14 post-AI. Means were furthermore calculated for the following periods around AI (day 0): ?12 to 0, ?2 to 0, AI day, 0 to 2, and 0 to 14. Logistic regression analysis indicated that the likelihood of pregnancy decreased when maximum temperature in the 2 days prior to AI was higher than 30 °C (by a factor of 0.81). Fertility was also lower for primiparous ewes and in multiparous ewes with more than five previous parturitions. Other factors with significant impact on fertility were flock, technician, inseminating ram, and a lambing–AI interval longer than 240 days. It was concluded that the 2 days prior to AI seems to be the period when heat stress had the greatest impact on pregnancy rate in Rasa Aragonesa ewes.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to examine sperm penetration through cervical mucus and associated physicochemical properties of cervical mucus from Belclare and Suffolk ewes - two breeds with divergent pregnancy rate following cervical AI using frozen-thawed semen. In Experiment 1, sperm penetration through cervical mucus was assessed in 15 Belclare and 15 Suffolk ewes at 30, 48 and 57h post sponge removal. In Experiment 2, rheological properties of mucus from 17 Belclare and 19 Suffolk ewes at 48 and 57h post sponge removal were determined. In Experiment 3, 20 Belclare and 20 Suffolk ewes were used to assess mucus ferning and pH collected at 42, 48, 57 and 65h post sponge removal. In Experiment 1, a higher number of sperm penetrated cervical mucus from Belclare ewes at 48h, reflected by a breed by time interaction (P=0.05). In Experiment 2, mucus from Suffolk ewes tended to have higher elastic and complex moduli than that from Belclare ewes (P=0.06) regardless of time of collection. There was no effect of ewe breed on the viscous modulus. In Experiment 3, there was a significant effect of time post sponge removal on ferning (P<0.01), but there was no effect of breed. There was no effect of time or breed on mucus pH. It is concluded that breed differences in the rheological properties of cervical mucus affect the ability of sperm to swim through cervical mucus and this may explain breed differences in fertility observed after cervical AI using frozen-thawed semen.  相似文献

Cervical anatomy limits the use of transcervical intrauterine artificial insemination (TC AI) in sheep. We have developed an instrument to cope atraumatically with the cervix; although this instrument has not affected fertilization rate or pregnancy rate through Day 3, the effects on sperm transport and pregnancy after Day 3 are not known. The objective of the present study was to determine whether our TC AI instrument affected sperm transport, pregnancy rates, or lambing rate. In Experiment 1, ewes were assigned to two treatments: TC AI using the new TC AI instrument (n=10) or AI via laparotomy using a laparoscopic AI instrument (n=10). Twenty hours after artificial insemination, the uterine horns and oviducts were recovered and flushed to collect spermatozoa. Sperm transport did not differ (P>0.05) between the two treatments. In Experiment 2, ewes were assigned to three treatments: TC AI using the new TC AI instrument+sham intrauterine AI via laparotomy (n=29); sham TC AI+intrauterine AI via laparotomy using a laparoscopic AI instrument (n=29); and sham TC AI+intrauterine AI via laparotomy using the new TC AI instrument (n=30). On Day 14 after AI, uteri were collected and flushed to recover blastocysts. Transcervical deposition of semen reduced (P<0.05) Day 14 pregnancy rate (17.2% versus 61%), but intrauterine deposition of semen using the TC AI instrument via midventral laparotomy increased (P<0.05) Day 14 pregnancy rate (76.6% versus 44.8%). In Experiment 3, ewes were assigned to two treatments: sham cervical manipulation (n=40) or cervical manipulation to mimic TC AI (n=40). Immediately after treatment, each ewe was mated with a ram and watched until the ram mounted and ejaculated into the ewe. Treatment did not affect Day 30 or 50 pregnancy rate (67.5 and 66.2%, respectively), determined ultrasonically, or lambing rate (62.5%). The differences between Days 30 and 50 pregnancy rates and lambing rate were not significant. In Experiment 4, ewes were assigned to two treatments: TC AI (n=99) or laparoscopic AI (n=99). Transcervical AI reduced (P<0.01) Day 30 (TC AI versus laparoscopic AI; 5.0% versus 46.0%) and Day 50 pregnancy rates (4.0% versus 41.0%), determined ultrasonically, and lambing rate (4.0% versus 41.0%). Although the TC AI procedure significantly reduced pregnancy and lambing rates, large numbers of spermatozoa deposited at natural insemination seemed to compensate. Because our TC AI procedure has all but eliminated any visual evidence of trauma, and because the procedure does not seem to affect sperm transport or embryonal survival until Day 3, we speculate that cervical manipulation associated with TC AI may activate pathways that interrupt pregnancy between Days 3 and 14.  相似文献

This study was carried out to determine ovine pregnancy-associated glycoprotein (oPAG) and progesterone (P4) levels in the serum of Churra and Merino ewes throughout gestation and the first month post partum. The oPAG levels were determined with an heterologus RIA using bovine PAG as standard and tracer and rabbit antiserum against oPAG, sensitivity was 4.0 ng/ml. The P4 levels were measured with a radioimmunological procedure, including a specific extraction step with petroleum ether (bp 60-80 degrees C) with a sensitivity of less than 0.1 ng/ml. There were no differences (P<0.10) in the oPAG profile between breeds from Weeks 1 to 18. From Week 18 to lambing, oPAG concentrations increased rapidly in Churra ewes (on average, from 250 to 650 ng/ml) while remaining relatively constant in the Merino ewes (around 250 ng/ml). No significant differences (P>0.05) were observed for mean weekly P4 levels between the 2 breeds. In both breeds, P4 increased throughout the whole length of gestation, with the highest level measured at Weeks 19-20, then declined 2 wk before parturition. No correlation was found between P4 and oPAG concentrations during gestation in either of the breeds. After lambing, oPAG and P4 levels decreased rapidly in 4 wk to basal values. In both breeds the oPAG concentrations at Weeks 19, 20 and 21 of gestation in ewes carrying male fetuses were higher than in those carrying female fetuses. From the results, we conclude that the breed and sex of the fetus could influence the production of oPAG.  相似文献

In three experiments, the onset of oestrus, time of ovulation and lambing after intrauterine insemination with frozen-thawed semen were examined following synchronisation of oestrus using intravaginal progestagen-impregnated sponges (inserted for 12 days) and an injection of PMSG at sponge removal.

The number (and percentage) of ewes detected in oestrus 12, 24, 36, 48, 60 and 72 h after sponge removal was 1 (0.3), 2 (0.6), 17 (5.2), 120 (36.7), 65 (20.0) and 10 (3.1) respectively. One hundred and twelve ewes (34.3%) remained unmarked. Egg fertilisation rates were not different between ewes irrespective of time of onset of oestrus or whether or not ewes were marked.

The median time of ovulation with respect to sponge removal (with 95% fiducial limits) for ewes joined with vasectomised rams (10:1) at spronge removal (teased ewes) was 55.8 h (54.61–57.09) and for unteased ewes 59.7 h (58.27–61.12).

In the third experiment, a total of 394 ewes were inseminated by laparoscopy with frozen-thawed semen. The percentage of ewes lambing and lambs born per ewe inseminated, and number of lambs born per ewe lambing for inseminations 48, 60, 72 and 78 h after sponge removal were 45.9, 57.7 and 1.25; 55.1, 72.0 and 1.31; 57.4, 80.9 and 1.41; and 39.3, 60.7 and 1.54, and for 59 control ewes receiving fresh semen by cervical insemination 47.5, 69.5 and 1.46 respectively. The lambing data after insemination with frozen semen was not different to that of the controls. The percentage of ewes lambing and lambs born per ewe inseminated increased with time of insemination at 48, 60 and 72 h (linear, P < 0.01) but was lower for inseminations at 78 h after sponge removal. Number of lambs born per ewe lambing increased with time of insemination after sponge removal (linear, P < 0.05).  相似文献
