Blood leukocyte responses to extracorporeal circulation. I. Short term extracorporeal circulation in dogs without and with extracorporeal irradiation

Short term (1 h) extracorporeal circulation without or with irradiation of blood was performed in two normal dogs in a series of experiments. The granulocyte count was constantly diminished, while the lymphocytes did not show any particular change in their concentration. In the majority of the experiments a decrease of the CFU-C content occurred to less than 70% of the initial level. There was no difference in the results of experiments with or without irradiation. In the "bag to bag" procedures, no significant change in the blood leukocyte counts including CFU-C, was established.     

Changes in the blood system after its extracorporeal irradiation

One-stage extracorporeal beta-radiation of dog blood in a dose of 6-12 Gy is not followed by the development of radiation after-effects. Favourable changes in the peripheral blood content are marked. Erythrocyte carbohydrates undergo adaptation reconstruction with an increase in the percentage of nucleic acids. Over 7 to 30 days of observation the activity of nonspecific immunity factors such as lysozyme, lytic activity of beta-lysines, and phagocytosis also increases. At the same time the antimicrobial action of penicillin is potentiated. The data obtained can be used for correction of upset immune responsiveness.     

The kinetics of 90Sr: genotypic determining

The genotypic component of the variability (intrafamily correlation) of body mass, mass of thigh-bones and concentration of 90Sr in bone tissue were evaluated in the progeny of the laboratory mice of CBA line which were in the conditions of normal or slow development of skeleton since their birthday and which got a single injection of 90Sr in the late ontogenesis. The evaluation was made with the control of the effects of sex and age membership of animals and also taking into account the conditions of their development. Significant intrafamily correlation of the concentration of 90Sr was revealed. It can be compared with the morphological signs, which are the evidence of existence of genotypic determinacy of the kinetics of 90Sr.     

Serum activity of angiotensin converting enzyme during extracorporeal circulation in man

Serum activity of angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) were measured during extra-corporeal circulation in five patients undergoing aorto-coronary bypass surgery. We observed a significant decrease of serum ACE levels in the absence of pulmonary circulation, suggesting that in man the lungs were the major source of circulating ACE. An effective extra-pulmonary liberation of ACE could take place during cardiopulmonary bypass. The levels of serum ACE increased with pulmonary recirculation, but preoperative levels were not reached 24 h later.
