Zooplankton composition and diversity in Osmansagar reservoir, Telangana, India were investigated during the year 2010–2012. Collected data revealed the occurrence of 66 species of zooplankton, of which 50 rotifers, 14 cladocerans and two copepods. The population density of zooplankton varied from 83 to 1080 Ind./L. The highest density was due to rotifer and copepod population. Diversity (H′) was ranged from 0.679 to 2.631, evenness (J′) was 0.257 to 0.904 and species richness was 8–24. The less diversity and evenness was observed in November 2011, March and August 2012, because of copepoda dominance by Mesocyclops leuckarti. The population abundance of zooplankton was Brachionus forficula, Brachionus diversicornis, Brachionus calyciflorus, Keratella tropica, Trichocerca similis and Diaphanosoma sp. especially during the summer seasons in both the years. There was no seasonal periodicity of any zooplankton communities, but the population turnover was observed from rotifers to copepoda over the study period. The significant inter and intra relationship between and within physicochemical and zooplankton indices were noted. It is found that surface water temperature, magnesium and total hardness could be a limiting factor for the species richness. Dominance may be due to the numerical abundance of rotifer and copepod and it has a positive significant correlation with pH.  相似文献

Restoration of shallow lakes to a clear-water state, often characterized by high submerged macrophyte cover and a high proportion of piscivores such as perch, Perca fluviatilis L., frequently involves removal of a large proportion of the zoobenthivorous fish, such as bream, Abramis brama L., and roach, Rutilus rutilus L. (i.e. biomanipulation). However, establishment of submerged macrophytes is often delayed following fish removal. This is unfortunate because plant beds typically host high densities of the macroinvertebrates constituting the diet of small perch and thus help perch to go through the bottleneck from feeding on macroinvertebrates to feeding on fish. Establishment of artificial plant beds may be a useful tool to enhance macroinvertebrate population growth and thus food resources for small perch until the natural plants have established. To investigate this restoration option, we studied during two growing seasons (June–October) the composition and abundance of the macroinvertebrate community in artificial plant beds installed in shallow Lake Væng (Denmark) comprising the initial phase of a biomanipulation effort by fish removal. Lake areas with artificial plant beds exhibited substantially higher macroinvertebrate densities than the lake bottom. This suggests that artificial plant beds may be used as feeding grounds for small perch, similarly to the well-known refuge effect for zooplankton against fish predation. In this way, artificial plant beds could help maintain a clear-water state during the transient period when natural submerged vegetation is not yet established in the lake.  相似文献

Macrophytes are common inhabitants of lotic environments and, depending on their morphological traits, possess adaptations that provide shelter to aquatic invertebrates against strong river flow and predators. They may also be used as a food source by macroinvertebrates. The main goal of this study was to determine the relationship between the red alga Paralemanea mexicana and its role as a shelter and/or food source for lotic macroinvertebrates. We also conducted research on the role of microhabitat and morphological variations of the alga in determining macroinvertebrate taxon abundance, diversity, and functional group composition in a high-current velocity river. Results showed that changes in cover and morphology of P. mexicana were mostly correlated with river current velocity, irradiance, and seasonal variation. In turn, these were related to changes in abundance and diversity of the associated macroinvertebrate community. In addition, six macroinvertebrate functional feeding groups were evaluated for associations with the red alga: filtering and gathering collectors, piercers, scrapers, herbivore shredders, and predators. The results showed that the Trichoptera Hydroptilidae genera Ochrotrichia and Metrichia use P. mexicana as a food source and case-building material. The Trichoptera Glossosomatidae Mortoniella uses the alga as a substrate. The biotic interactions between P. mexicana and associated macroinvertebrates reveal the importance of macrophytes as purveyors of substrate, as food and shelter for macroinvertebrates, and also as promoters of macroinvertebrate community diversity. In addition, it was shown that macroinvertebrate herbivory likely facilitates vegetative propagation of the red alga through increased release and germination of carpospores and new gametophytes.  相似文献

Features of the composition and structure of the summer zooplankton in the pelagic zone of Lake Sevan in years that were characterized by different abundances and biomasses of fish are described. It is shown that the species diversity of the community and the specific number of species of zooplankteurs, the quantity of Copepods in the total abundance and biomass of zooplankton, as well as the value of the Shannon index and the trophic coefficient, increased upon an increase in the fish abundance. At the same time, the total biomass of zooplankton and biomass of cladocerans decreased, among which the density and biomass of the larger and more colored Daphnia (Ctenodaphnia) magna Straus decreased, but the density and biomass of D. (Daphnia) hyalina Leydig and Diaphаnosoma brachyurum Lievin increased.  相似文献

The relative abundance of autotrophic (A) and heterotrophic (H) organisms in the microbial food web of temporary ponds and its relationship to environmental variables were analysed. Four localities (43 temporary ponds) were selected for study. They were located in unaltered, protected basins without intensive agriculture or strong human pressure. Because the supply of allochthonous organic matter is expected to be higher than inorganic nutrient inputs in temporary ponds, we hypothesized that the microbial food web in these unaltered basins was dominated by heterotrophic organisms. Our results showed that the log A:H biomass ratio (A/H) was always negative, indicating strong dominance by heterotrophic organisms in these ponds. Moreover, A/H was negatively related to DOC concentrations, but this relationship was weaker in the locality with the highest DOC concentration. No significant relationships were found between A/H and the other environmental variables analysed, namely inorganic nutrients, fulvic acids, chlorophyll-a concentrations, macrophyte biomass or total zooplankton biomass. However, when the different groups of zooplankton were considered separately, A/H correlated negatively with cladoreran biomass and positively with harpacticoid biomass. Thus, temporary ponds differ from deeper ecosystems, in which the greater importance of autochthonous energy inputs leads to microbial food web that is more dominated by autotrophs.  相似文献

Based on the data collected from the Suichuan and Shushui Rivers, both tributaries of the Ganjiang River between April and July of 2015, the fish species identified were classified into 68 and 46 species, 14 and 12 families in the Suichuan River and Shushui River respectively. Cyprinidae is the most common family that accounts for 52.9% and 58.7% in the total number of fish species in the Suichuan River and Shushui River, respectively. The dominant species were Pseudohemiculter dispar, Squalidus argentatus, Silurus asotus and Leptobotia elongate for the Suichuan River and Squalidus argentatus, Acrossocheilus parallens, Pseudohemiculter dispar, Silurus asotus, Pelteobagrus fulvidraco, Acrossocheilus fasciatus and Zacco platypus for the Shushui River. The diversity of fish species showed more abundant and diverse for the Suichuan River. The composition of ecotype of fish indicated the rich diversities of ecotype in both the Suichuan and Shushui Rivers. The tributary (Suichuan River) and main stream of the Ganjiang River demonstrated a highly fauna similarity and the fish resources indicated its significance to maintain the fish diversity in the middle of the Ganjiang River and its benefits to the existence of the fish species in mountain streams. Dam construction, sand excavation and heavy metal pollution are the most significant threat to fish diversity and ecosystem functioning in Ganjiang River basin. In order to protect fish diversity and fisheries more effectively, relevant laws should be strengthened and conservation areas should be established for the survival of freshwater fish species.  相似文献

Aquaculture ponds represent ecologically relevant environments to study the community composition and diversity of methanogenic assemblages, as well as their interactions with cultivated species and chemical indicators. In this study, aquaculture ponds with crab (Eriocheir sinensis), oriental river prawn (Macrobrachium nipponense), perch (Micropterus salmonides) and Wuchang fish (Parabramis pekinensis) were sampled, and Illumina high-throughput sequencing was used to investigate the methanogenic communities. The results revealed that the abundant methanogenic orders in surface sediment were Methanomicrobiales, Methanosarcinales and Methanocellales. The relative abundance of Methanocellales was higher in crab and prawn ponds as compared to other ponds. Methanogenic 16S rRNA gene abundance and beta diversity of the community was affected by the cultivated species. Methanogenic communities in aquaculture ponds with higher contents of total nitrogen and organic matter had decreased species richness, while those with higher contents of ammonia and nitrite had an overall decreased abundance of methanogens and their respective diversities. Overall, in addition to the differences in cultivated species, the consequent differences in farming practices including the types and amounts of feeds used, the contents of total nitrogen, organic matter, ammonia and nitrite could all influence the methanogenic community in surface sediment of aquaculture ponds.  相似文献

Diet composition and feeding habits of the burrowing fish Parapocryptes serperaster were investigated on different fish sizes across dry and wet seasons in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam. The gut length was positively related to fish length; the gut length was 1.57 ± 0.30 times the total length, which is in the range for omnivore (1–3). Detritus, algae and copepods were the main food items in the foregut. The diet composition showed seasonal and intraspecific variations in all fish sizes. The diet diversity varied with fish size and the dry-wet season pattern, and small fish had a higher diet diversity than large fish. The diet evenness index and Costello graphic analysis indicate that this goby is a generalist feeder and feeds mainly on detritus, followed by diatoms, and could obtain food from the bottom and the water column. The feeding intensity of P. serperaster was higher in the wet season than in the dry season, but was not significantly affected by fish size. The P. serperaster fed on Navicula spp. in the wet season, but on Nitzschia spp. in the dry season. The understanding of food and feeding habits of P. serperaster contributes to our knowledge on feeding adaptation of small-bodied bottom-dwelling gobies to the mud flat habitats in tropical monsoonal regions.  相似文献

We aimed to study whether the varying changes in predation pressure by perch (Perca fluviatilis) reflect the biomass, density, and community structure of the benthic macroinvertebrates. Prey preference is size-dependent, and overall predation pressure is density dependent, and thus the size structure of the P. fluviatilis population should affect the structure of the macroinvertebrate community, and the population density of P. fluviatilis should reflect the overall density of benthic macroinvertebrates. We sampled the littoral benthic community in a boreal lake that had been divided into two parts that were subjected to two different fishing procedures during 2007–2012 period and analyzed the macroinvertebrate diet of fish. The benthic macroinvertebrate community reflected the predation pressure. Total macroinvertebrate biomass increased during the study period in the lake division with a non-size-selective fishing procedure (NSF), i.e., all invertivorous perch size-classes targeted, but decreased in the section with negatively size-selective fishing procedure (SSF), i.e., large invertivorous individuals ≥ 16 cm were not targeted. This difference was a result of the increase in large-sized species, such as Odonata, for the NSF procedure and decrease in the SSF procedure. In contrast to total biomass, total macroinvertebrate density did not show a response to predator size structure but rather total macroinvertebrate density decreased with increasing fish density. The study demonstrates the effect of predation pressure of P. fluviatilis on benthic communities, thus highlighting the keystone predator role of the species in boreal lakes and gives more insight on the multiple effects of fish predation on littoral benthic communities.  相似文献

Amphibian ranaviruses occur globally, but we are only beginning to understand mechanisms for emergence. Ranaviruses are aquatic pathogens which can cause?>?90% mortality in larvae of many aquatic-breeding amphibians, making them important focal host taxa. Host susceptibilities and virulence of ranaviruses have been studied extensively in controlled laboratory settings, but research is needed to identify drivers of infection in natural environments. Constructed ponds, essential components of wetland restoration, have been associated with higher ranavirus prevalence than natural ponds, posing a conundrum for conservation efforts, and emphasizing the need to understand potential drivers. In this study, we analyzed 4 years of Frog virus 3 prevalence and associated environmental parameters in populations of wood frogs (Lithobates sylvaticus) and green frogs (Lithobates clamitans) in a constructed pond system. High prevalence was best predicted by low temperature, high host density, low zooplankton concentrations, and Gosner stages approaching metamorphosis. This study identified important variables to measure in assessments of ranaviral infection risk in newly constructed ponds, including effects of zooplankton, which have not been previously quantified in natural settings. Examining factors mediating diseases in natural environments, particularly in managed conservation settings, is important to both validate laboratory findings in situ, and to inform future conservation planning, particularly in the context of adaptive management.  相似文献

We studied the feeding ecology of an endemic cyprinodontid fish, Aphanius marassantensis (K?z?l?rmak Toothcarp), with special emphasis on seasonal and ontogenetic diet shift. The dietary composition revealed an omnivorous diet with great seasonal and ontogenetic variation. Cladocera and Calanoid Copepods (Diaptomus sp.) dominated the diet in Spring and Summer, whereas the food items of plant origin e.g. filamentous algae and diatoms were the most important components in Autumn and Winter. An ontogenetic diet shift was also demonstrated. While the feeding of juveniles was based mostly on planktonic organisms, adult individuals preferred larger prey taxa, such as Gammarus sp. and Gastropods. There was no significant sex-related variation in feeding with the exception for the volume of gut content. The investigation on the feeding strategy of A. marassantensis suggested a generalised feeding pattern with some specialised individuals. This generalist feeding habits may account for the well-established population of this species in a big reservoir under coexistence of two non-native fish species, Pseudorasbora parva and Atherina boyeri.  相似文献

Invasive predators can have dramatic impacts on invaded communities. Extreme declines in macroinvertebrate populations often follow killer shrimp (Dikerogammarus villosus) invasions. There are concerns over similar impacts on fish through predation of eggs and larvae, but these remain poorly quantified. We compare the predatory impact of invasive and native amphipods (D. villosus and Gammarus pulex) on fish eggs and larvae (ghost carp Cyprinus carpio and brown trout Salmo trutta) in the laboratory. We use size-matched amphipods, as well as larger D. villosus reflecting natural sizes. We quantify functional responses, and electivity amongst eggs or larvae and alternative food items (invertebrate, plant and decaying leaf). D. villosus, especially large individuals, were more likely than G. pulex to kill trout larvae. However, the magnitude of predation was low (seldom more than one larva killed over 48 h). Trout eggs were very rarely killed. In contrast, carp eggs and larvae were readily killed and consumed by all amphipod groups. Large D. villosus had maximum feeding rates 1.6–2.0 times higher than the smaller amphipods, whose functional responses did not differ. In electivity experiments with carp eggs, large D. villosus consumed the most eggs and the most food in total. However, in experiments with larvae, consumption did not differ between amphipod groups. Overall, our data suggest D. villosus will have a greater predatory impact on fish populations than G. pulex, primarily due to its larger size. Higher invader abundance could amplify this difference. The additional predatory pressure could reduce recruitment into fish populations.  相似文献

The main goal of the present study was to address the effect of feeding fermented soybean meal-based diet to Atlantic salmon on gut microbiota. Further, expression of genes of interest, including cathelicidin antimicrobial peptide (cath), mucin 2 (muc2), aquaporin (aqp8ab), and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (pcna), in proximal intestine of fish fed either experimental diet was analyzed. Three experimental diets, including a control fishmeal (30% FM), soybean meal (30% SBM), or fermented soybean meal diet (30% FSBM) were randomly assigned to triplicate tanks during a 50-day trial. The PCR-TTGE showed microbiota composition was influenced by experimental diets. Bands corresponding to genus Lactobacillus and Pediococcus were characteristic in fish fed the FSBM-based diet. On the other hand, bands corresponding to Isoptericola, Cellulomonas, and Clostridium sensu stricto were only observed in fish FM-based diet, while Acinetobacter and Altererythrobacter were detected in fish fed SBM-based diet. The expression of muc2 and aqp8ab were significantly greater in fish fed the FSBM-based diet compared with the control group. Our results suggest feeding FSBM to Atlantic salmon may (1) boost health and growth physiology in fish by promoting intestinal lactic acid bacteria growth, having a prebiotic-like effect, (2) promote proximal intestine health by increasing mucin production, and (3) boost intestinal trans-cellular uptake of water. Further research to better understands the effects of bioactive compounds derived from the fermentation process of plant feedstuff on gut microbiota and the effects on health and growth in fish is required.  相似文献

The amphibian disease chytridiomycosis, caused by the fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), has contributed to the decline of Chiricahua leopard frogs (Rana chiricahuensis), a federally threatened species native to the Southwestern United States. We characterized immunogenetic variability in R. chiricahuensis by sequencing an expressed Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) class IIβ gene across 13 natural populations in Arizona, USA, as well as 283 individuals that were captive reared from two egg masses. We recovered a total of five class IIβ MHC alleles compared to 84 alleles previously characterized in eight natural populations of the Arizona congener R. yavapaiensis, demonstrating reduced MHC diversity in R. chiricahuensis. One allele was fixed in five populations but none of the R. chiricahuensis alleles were closely related to R. yavapaiensis allele Q, which is significantly associated with chytridiomycosis resistance in laboratory trials. Nine of 13 R. chiricahuensis population localities were Bd positive, and bearing allele RachDRB*04 was the best genetic predictor of an individual being infected with Bd. A total of three class IIβ alleles were recovered from captive reared individuals, which were released to two natural population localities followed by recapture surveys to assess MHC-based survival over winter, the time when chytridiomycosis outbreaks are most severe. At one site, all released animals were fixed for a single allele and MHC-based survival could not be assessed. At the second site, fewer than half of the released but all of the recaptured individuals were homozygous for RachDRB*05, indicating that MHC genotype is important in determining Bd survival under natural field conditions. We conclude that the limited MHC variation in R. chiricahuensis is likely the consequence rather than the cause of natural selection favoring alleles that promote survival in the face of Bd. Our study highlights that preserving even low levels of functional genetic variation may be essential for population persistence, and that local disease adaptation may present as a reduction in genetic diversity. These finding also suggest that for populations that have declined due to a specific infectious pathogen, MHC-based genetically-informed reintroduction approaches may enhance species recovery efforts.  相似文献

Data from the International Biological Programme (IBP) and subsequent studies have been re-analysed to test the two hypotheses which previously have been suggested concerning the zooplankton in the mountain lake, Øvre Heimdalsvatn: (1) the average temperature in June, more than other summer months, is affecting the growth rate and population densities of zooplankton in the lake, (2) the invasion of the European minnow (Phoxinus phoxinus) has caused changes in the zooplankton community. The analyses have demonstrated that the June temperature strongly affects the growth rate of all the zooplankton species, but that there is no relationship with the population maxima. The species composition in the crustacean zooplankton has not changed between 1969 and 1999, and any direct impact of the minnows on the zooplankton community could not be detected. Indirectly, the minnows may have reduced the density of invertebrate predators, and thus caused an increase in juvenile survival and increased summer maximum density of Bosmina longispina. The variation in density of the copepod, Cyclops scutifer, was correlated with the density of Heterocope saliens, most likely the result of predator–prey interactions.  相似文献

Habitat permanence and threat of predation are primary drivers of community assembly and composition in lentic freshwater systems. Pond-breeding amphibians select oviposition sites to maximize fitness and minimize risks of predation and desiccation of their offspring, typically facing a trade-off between the two as predation risk often increases as desiccation risk decreases. To experimentally determine if Hyla chrysoscelis partition oviposition along gradients of relative desiccation risk and predation risk, we tested oviposition site preference in a natural population of treefrogs colonizing experimental ponds that varied in water depth and contained predatory larvae of two Ambystoma salamander species. Hyla chrysoscelis selected habitats with both lower predation risk, avoiding A. talpoideum over A. maculatum, and lower desiccation risk, selecting ponds with three times greater depth. We demonstrate that adult oviposition site choices simultaneously minimize relative predation risk and desiccation risk and that closely related salamander species produce functionally different responses among colonizing animals.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to analyze the organic matter (OM) origin in the nearshore and the surf zones adjacent to Mar Chiquita lagoon, in order to determine the importance of allochthonous estuarine detritus and in situ marine phytoplankton as carbon (C) sources for young fishes prior to entering the lagoon. Water samples from both the nearshore and the surf zones were collected for estimation of Chlorophyll a concentration, and δ13C and δ15N values of the particulate organic matter (POM). Isotopic composition of the zooplankton and fish larvae from both zones and fish juveniles from the surf zone were also estimated. The contribution of potential OM sources was quantified by Bayesian stable isotope mixing models (SIAR). SIAR models revealed that the POM composition in the coastal area close to Mar Chiquita lagoon comprised a mix of primary producers (terrestrial and marine). The cordgrass Spartina densiflora that develops in the saltmarshes bounding the lagoon, contributed most to the POM of the surf zone, being important as a C source for zooplankton from the same zone. Towards deeper waters (10–12 m, ~2.5 km offshore) with higher chlorophyll a concentrations, phytoplankton contributed most to the POM. Spartina densiflora was not relevant as a C source for larval and juvenile fishes. However, it was of importance to the group of primary consumers, which apparently sustain other zooplankton organisms that fish fed on. In this sense, the OM derived from S. densiflora and exported to the coastal area contributes to sustaining the prey for young fishes outside Mar Chiquita.  相似文献

Mesophotic reef fish assemblages (30–90 m depth) of the small and remote St. Peter and St. Paul’s Archipelago (SPSPA), Mid-Atlantic Ridge, Brazil, were characterized using remotely operated vehicles. Ordination analyses identified distinct fish assemblages in the upper (30–50 m) and lower (50–90 m) mesophotic zones, the former characterized by high abundances of species that are also abundant at euphotic reefs (Caranx lugubris, Melichthys niger, Stegastes sanctipauli and Chromis multilineata) and the latter dominated by two mesophotic specialists (Prognathodes obliquus and Chromis enchrysura). Planktivores dominated fish assemblages, particularly in the upper mesophotic zone, possibly due to a greater availability of zooplankton coming from the colder Equatorial Undercurrent in mesophotic depths of the SPSPA. Turf algae, fleshy macroalgae and scleractinian corals dominated benthic assemblages between 30 and 40 m depth, while bryozoans, black corals and sponges dominated between 40 and 90 m depth. Canonical correspondence analysis explained 74 % of the relationship between environmental characteristics (depth, benthic cover and complexity) and structure of fish assemblages, with depth as the most important independent variable. Juveniles of Bodianus insularis and adults of P. obliquus and C. enchrysura were clearly associated with branching black corals (Tanacetipathes spp.), suggesting that black corals play key ecological roles in lower mesophotic reefs of the SPSPA. Results from this study add to the global database about mesophotic reef ecosystems (MREs) and provide a baseline for future evaluations of possible anthropogenic and natural disturbances on MREs of the SPSPA.  相似文献

The river plate sprat Platanichthys platana (Regan, 1917) is a small clupeid fish of South American fresh and brackish waters which was introduced outside of its native range, becoming widespread in the Billings Complex, a highly eutrophic urban reservoir located in the metropolitan area of São Paulo city, Upper Tietê River Basin (São Paulo State, Brazil). To better understand some aspects related to the invasion of this species in the reservoir, we assessed its diet through the analysis of stomach contents, niche breadth and feeding selectivity. Simultaneously to fish catches, zooplankton samples were collected at three reservoir arms with different anthropic influences during the dry and rainy seasons of 2014. Zooplankton diversity and dominance varied between sites, while composition at the genus level was similar. Sprat fed predominantly on zooplankton (68.3%), consuming a broad diversity of prey (Bosmina, Lecane , Chydoridae, Cyclopoida and Harpacticoida copepods), which were selectively predated. Consumed species varied according to site, season and fish size, with Cladocera being dominant at the most eutrophic site (Bororé). Considering spatial differences in the consumed zooplankton, the analysis of percentage similarity (SIMPER) indicated the highest dissimilarity (95.3%) between the Bororé (hypereutrophic) and Grande River Reservoir (supereutrophic) sites, while trophic niche width increased from the most impacted (Bororé) to the most preserved site (Capivari). The high captures of the sprat in the Billings Complex reported by local fishermen, indicated the adaptability of this invasive fish to the new habitat, suggesting that it may possess a central role as the dominant zooplankton predator in the system.  相似文献

The present investigation aims to study the zooplankton composition, diversity along with physicochemical profile in a chosen pond at Medak district from December, 2010 to November, 2012. The study revealed the occurrence of 80 zooplankton species including 60 rotifers, 18 cladocerans and 02 copepods. Zooplankton density fluctuated between 119 and 26,463/L, diversity H′ = 0.89–2.68, species richness 5–21 and dominance 18.6–74.1 % over the 2 years study period. Rotifers were more predominant than other zooplankton communities, especially family Brachionidae and Lecanidae. High density of the overall zooplankton community was due to more rotifer population and the numerical dominance of the species Brachionus angularis, B. calyciflorus, B. caudatus, Keratella tropica, Filinia terminalis and Epiphanies mucronata. It was observed that the zooplankton density significantly correlates with pH values of the pond. Physicochemical profile of the pond shows tropical climate, hard water and alkaline in nature. Chloride content was found to be high may be due to the anthropogenic pressure and influx of sewage. The high content of phosphate and nitrate reveals that the pond is enriched with nutrients. This has significant correlation with zooplankton dominance. The present findings clearly indicates the eutrophication of the pond.  相似文献
