Abundant asterozoan trace fossils in the Lower Cretaceous Apeleg Formation of southern Chile were produced by the infilling of traces made by asteroids and ophiuroids on a muddy surface. Most are preserved as hypichnial ridges formed as casts on the bottom of fine-grained sandstone laminae. Star-shaped Asteriacites lumbricalis are interpreted as the infillings of shallow excavations made by asteroids. Hook-shaped and sinuous ridges of the newly defined ichnogenus and ichnospecies Ophioichnus aysenensis are interpreted as the casts of imprints made by the walking action of the arms of ophiuroids. Deposition probably took place in an offshore tide-swept marine shelf environment. In life the animals formed an assemblage equivalent to echinoderm aggregations on the modern sea floor. 相似文献

Regeneration of structures (genital bars and ligaments) which enables ophiuroids to throw away the aboral part of the disc was studied in this work. The succession of disc separation during autotomy has been fixed. It has been revealed that upon restoration of genital bars and ligaments regeneration occurs due to migration of cells from tissues remaining after autotomy, but not due to differentiation of cell elements. The specification of anterior neuroectoderm is controlled by a highly conserved molecular mechanism in bilaterians. A forkhead family gene, foxQ2, is known to be one of the pivotal regulators, which is zygotically expressed in this region during embryogenesis of a broad range of bilaterians. However, what controls the expression of this essential factor has remained unclear to date. To reveal the regulatory mechanism of foxQ2, we performed cis‐regulatory analysis of two foxQ2 genes, foxQ2a and foxQ2b, in a sea urchin Hemicentrotus pulcherrimus. In sea urchin embryos, foxQ2 is initially expressed in the entire animal hemisphere and subsequently shows narrower expression restricted to the anterior pole region. In this study, as a first step to understand the foxQ2 regulation, we focused on the later restricted expression and analyzed the upstream cis‐regulatory sequences of foxQ2a and foxQ2b by using the constructs fused to short half‐life green fluorescent protein. Based on deletion and mutation analyses of both foxQ2, we identified each of the five regulatory sequences, which were 4–9 bp long. Neither of the regulatory sequences contains any motifs for ectopic activation or spatial repression, suggesting that later mRNA localization is regulated in situ. We also suggest that the three amino acid loop extension‐class homeobox gene Meis is involved in the maintenance of foxQ2b, the expression of which is dominant during embryogenesis. 相似文献

Amphipholis squamata is a small ophiuroid with a worldwide distribution except for Polar regions. Global populations of A. squamata are morphologically uniform but inter- and intrapopulational variability occurs at levels from the population to the genotype. The species is polychromatic and two colour varieties (dark-brown and spotted) from two adjacent populations (separated from each other for only 20 years) in a lagoonal system (Sicily) were compared using bioluminescence and life-history traits as indicators of variability. The dark-brown variety was dominant in Lago Nuovo and the spotted one was dominant in Porto Vecchio. Important variations were observed within populations, however, there were significant differences in life-history traits and luminous capabilities between the dark-brown and spotted varieties. The dark-brown variety invested more energy in somatic growth than reproduction (1 cohort each year and growth rate of 0.279 mm each month), whereas energy was devoted mainly to reproduction in the spotted variety (4 cohorts each year and growth rate of 0.171 mm each month). The chronology of the life cycles was completely different between the two varieties. Fertilization occurred mainly in spring for the spotted but only in autumn for the dark-brown. Recruitment occurred mainly in autumn for spotted and in spring for dark-brown individuals. Finally, significant differences were observed for maximal intensity of emitted light and kinetic parameters between the two varieties. 相似文献

The trace fossil Asteriacites, recorded in Cambrian to Recent shallow- and deep-marine facies, is traditionally interpreted as the resting trace of asterozoans. Well-preserved specimens of A. lumbricalis are abundant in Pennsylvanian (Upper Carboniferous) shallow- and marginal-marine siliciclastic deposits of eastern Kansas and western Missouri. Detailed morphologic analysis of these specimens suggests that they record the activities of mobile epifaunal ophiuroids. Evidence of a brittle star (ophiuroid) producer rather than sea star (asteroid) is provided by (1) trace-fossil morphologic features reflecting the anatomy of the producer (e.g., well-differentiated central structure, slender vermiform arms) and ophiuroid burrowing technique (e.g., proximal arm expansion, arm branching), and (2) mode of occurrence (e.g., gregarious behavior, horizontal and vertical repetition). Vertical and horizontal repetition produces complex aggregates of A. lumbricalis that are interpreted either as escape structures (fugichnia) or as feeding structures, respectively. Ophiura texturata is proposed as a modern analogue for the A. lumbricalis producer, based on inferred life habit and feeding behavior. Asteriacites lumbricalis is present in two different intertidal trace-fossil assemblages. The first assemblage is characterized by high diversity and records tidal flats developed outside of embayments under normal marine conditions. The second assemblage consists of A. lumbricalis together with a few other ichnotaxa and represents a depauperate association that developed in restricted tidal flats within an embayment or estuarine setting. This challenges the conventional view of Asteriacites as a normal-marine salinity indicator. Some echinoderms, and particularly asterozoans, penetrate and inhabit modern environments of depressed salinity. The presence of Asteriacites in Pennsylvanian marginal-marine facies of Kansas and Missouri provides evidence that ophiuroids had adapted to brackish-water conditions by the late Paleozoic. 相似文献

As the ocean warms, thermal tolerance of developmental stages may be a key driver of changes in the geographical distributions and abundance of marine invertebrates. Additional stressors such as ocean acidification may influence developmental thermal windows and are therefore important considerations for predicting distributions of species under climate change scenarios. The effects of reduced seawater pH on the thermal windows of fertilization, embryology and larval morphology were examined using five echinoderm species: two polar (Sterechinus neumayeri and Odontaster validus), two temperate (Fellaster zelandiae and Patiriella regularis) and one tropical (Arachnoides placenta). Responses were examined across 12–13 temperatures ranging from ?1.1 °C to 5.7 °C (S. neumayeri), ?0.5 °C to 10.7 °C (O. validus), 5.8 °C to 27 °C (F. zelandiae), 6.0 °C to 27.1 °C (P. regularis) and 13.9 °C to 34.8 °C (A. placenta) under present‐day and near‐future (2100+) ocean acidification conditions (‐0.3 pH units) and for three important early developmental stages 1) fertilization, 2) embryo (prehatching) and 3) larval development. Thermal windows for fertilization were broad and were not influenced by a pH decrease. Embryological development was less thermotolerant. For O. validus, P. regularis and A. placenta, low pH reduced normal development, albeit with no effect on thermal windows. Larval development in all five species was affected by both temperature and pH; however, thermal tolerance was not reduced by pH. Results of this study suggest that in terms of fertilization and development, temperature will remain as the most important factor influencing species' latitudinal distributions as the ocean continues to warm and decrease in pH, and that there is little evidence of a synergistic effect of temperature and ocean acidification on the thermal control of species ranges. 相似文献

Abstract. Settlement timing and differential settlement for the larval stage of the green sea urchin, Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis , in the southern Gulf of Maine was studied during the summer of 1996. Settlement densities on astroturf panels were highest in June and early July (13 to 37 m −2 d−1 ), and peaked in mid-June (199 m−2 d−1 ). Settlement was low to nonexistent from mid-July through August (0 to 2 m−2 d−1 ). During the peak in settlement, no selection for substrate type was observed. In the remainder of the settlement period, differential settlement occurred, with a preference for substrate covered with live coralline algae. Test diameter of newly settled urchins varied among the substrates, with urchins settling on live coralline algae having the largest test diameter (0.43 ± 0.01 mm). There were no differences in test diameter among the different weeks in which sampling was done. Sustained onshore winds occurred only during peak settlement, suggesting that wind drift currents may concentrate larvae and influence patterns of larval settlement. 相似文献

This research explores the significance of rapid burial in preserving fossils, with a particular focus on free-living echinoderms. Experiments were based on ophiuroids to simulate burial under different turbiditic flows. The results showed that a bed thickness of around 10 cm is a limit for the preservation of whole skeletons in most cases. The type of sediment can affect the integrity of the buried skeletons, with sand deposition resulting in higher rates of autotomy. However, mud deposition did not show any numbing effect, as previously believed for echinoderms. In contrast, freshwater-rich sediments can play a critical role, paralysing specimens and preventing escape postures through rapid changes in salinity. From this, the study highlights the importance of extrabasinal turbidites, generated outside the marine basin, in the fossilization of marine invertebrates. Such sediments are rich in fresh water and can be more efficient burial traps compared to other intrabasinal deposits generated by storm waves or submarine landslides. 相似文献

The tissue regenerative capabilities of echinoderms are well known at the morphogenic level, yet significant knowledge gaps remain concerning the molecular control of these processes. This pilot study assayed two pharmacological agents (vincristine sulphate and DAPT) injected directly into the body cavity of specimens of the temperate echinoid Psammechinus miliaris which had had their spines and tube feet deliberately amputated. Vincristine sulphate, which is a generalised mitotic inhibitor, was used as a positive control, whereas DAPT is a y-secretase inhibitor known to block sea urchin embryo development and suppress echinoid regeneration by interfering with Notch signalling pathways. Significant differences in regeneration rate became apparent in both treatments 29 days post amputation with both inhibitors slowing regeneration of tube feet (0.6 μg/g vincristine sulphate by 44.4% relative to controls; 4 μg/g DAPT by 55.6% relative to controls) and spines (0.6 μg/g vincristine sulphate by 53.3% relative to controls; 4 μg/g DAPT by 66.7% relative to controls). Vincristine sulphate was more clearly dose-dependent than DAPT. This initial inhibition-based approach allows inferences to be made concerning possible molecular pathways controlling regeneration within P. miliaris and adds further support to the hypothesis that Notch signalling plays a major role in regulating regeneration in echinoids. 相似文献

Cidaroid sea urchins are the sister clade to all other extant echinoids and have numerous unique features, including unusual primary spines. These lack an epidermis when mature, exposing their high‐magnesium calcite skeleton to seawater and allowing the settlement of numerous epibionts. Cidaroid spines are made of an inner core of classical monocrystalline skeleton and an outer layer of polycrystalline magnesium calcite. Interestingly, cidaroids survived the Permian‐Triassic crisis, which was characterized by severe acidification of the ocean. Currently, numerous members of this group inhabit the deep ocean, below the saturation horizon for their magnesium calcite skeleton. This suggests that members of this taxon may have characteristics that may allow them to resist ongoing ocean acidification linked to global change. We compared the effect of acidified seawater (pH 7.2, 7.6, or 8.2) on mature spines with a fully developed cortex to that on young, growing spines, in which only the stereom core was developed. The cortex of mature spines was much more resistant to etching than the stereom of young spines. We then examined the properties of the cortex that might be responsible for its resistance compared to the underlying stereomic layers, namely morphology, intramineral organic material, magnesium concentration, intrinsic solubility of the mineral, and density. Our results indicate that the acidification resistance of the cortex is probably due to its lower magnesium concentration and higher density, the latter reducing the amount of surface area in contact with acidified seawater. The biofilm and epibionts covering the cortex of mature spines may also reduce its exposure to seawater. 相似文献

The study of species boundaries in areas of sympatry provides important insight into speciation processes. We investigated whether (i) two sympatric holothurians, Holothuria scabra and H. s. var. versicolor constituted species, and (ii) specimens of intermediate phenotype hybrids. Results from allozyme and 16S mtDNA sequence analyses indicated these two sea cucumbers to be distinct but young biological and phylogenetic species. Several private allozyme alleles existed and a Bayesian analysis grouped varieties into separate clusters. MtDNA sequences hardly varied within each taxon, and nine single bp changes were diagnostic between these two taxa. Allozyme allele frequencies in individuals of intermediate phenotype were intermediate to those of H. scabra and H. s. var. versicolor , most private alleles were present and heterozygote frequencies were higher than in either species. Ancestry coefficients modelled for these individuals were close to 0.5, indicating that the two taxa contributed equally to their genome. MtDNA sequences were identical to those of either species. We conclude that individuals of intermediate phenotype represent F1 hybrids. The presence of hybrids demonstrates that the opportunity for introgression exists, but is not realized, as backcrossing and introgression were not supported by the data. Eublastoids are a large clade of blastoids; stemmed blastozoan echinoderms diagnosed by their conservative body plan (three basals, four deltoid plates and five radial plates), lancet plate supporting the ambulacra, and hydrospire respiratory structures. Although Eublastoidea was a highly successful clade in the middle and late Palaeozoic it is absent from early echinoderm radiations seen in the Cambrian and Ordovician record. Here we provide a re‐evaluation of Macurdablastus uniplicatus Broadhead from the Ordovician, using detailed morphological assessment based on advanced synchrotron tomography and phylogenetic analysis. Macurdablastus uniplicatus falls outside Eublastoidea because of the morphological differences in lancet plate and respiratory structures. The oldest recorded eublastoid is thus middle Silurian in age. The re‐evaluation of the morphology of Macurdablastus provides a basis for revising blastoid phylogeny and classification. 相似文献

While some aspects of the phylogeny of the five living echinoderm classes are clear, the position of the ophiuroids (brittlestars) relative to asteroids (starfish), echinoids (sea urchins) and holothurians (sea cucumbers) is controversial. Ophiuroids have a pluteus-type larva in common with echinoids giving some support to an ophiuroid/echinoid/holothurian clade named Cryptosyringida. Most molecular phylogenetic studies, however, support an ophiuroid/asteroid clade (Asterozoa) implying either convergent evolution of the pluteus or reversals to an auricularia-type larva in asteroids and holothurians. A recent study of 10 genes from four of the five echinoderm classes used ‘phylogenetic signal dissection’ to separate alignment positions into subsets of (i) suboptimal, heterogeneously evolving sites (invariant plus rapidly changing) and (ii) the remaining optimal, homogeneously evolving sites. Along with most previous molecular phylogenetic studies, their set of heterogeneous sites, expected to be more prone to systematic error, support Asterozoa. The homogeneous sites, in contrast, support an ophiuroid/echinoid grouping, consistent with the cryptosyringid clade, leading them to posit homology of the ophiopluteus and echinopluteus. Our new dataset comprises 219 genes from all echinoderm classes; analyses using probabilistic Bayesian phylogenetic methods strongly support Asterozoa. The most reliable, slowly evolving quartile of genes also gives highest support for Asterozoa; this support diminishes in second and third quartiles and the fastest changing quartile places the ophiuroids close to the root. Using phylogenetic signal dissection, we find heterogenous sites support an unlikely grouping of Ophiuroidea + Holothuria while homogeneous sites again strongly support Asterozoa. Our large and taxonomically complete dataset finds no support for the cryptosyringid hypothesis; in showing strong support for the Asterozoa, our preferred topology leaves the question of homology of pluteus larvae open. 相似文献

Abstract. The highly modified development of the brittle star Amphiodia occidentalis is described from post-fertilization to the juvenile stage. Fertilized eggs are negatively buoyant, ∼190 μm in diameter, surrounded by a thick hyaline layer and a tough fertilization envelope. After gastrulation, embryos flatten into a bilaterally symmetrical disk with a U-shaped ridge surrounding an indented stomodeum on the oral surface. Internally, a ring of ∼22 calcitic ossicles grows at the edge of the disk. Vestigial ophiopluteal structures such as a ciliated band, paired larval spicules, or larval arms are not expressed during development. Although the fertilization envelope disintegrates on day 3, developmental stages remain immotile for five more days until they move with podia. At hatching, five hydrocoelic lobes are evident on the left side of the post-gastrula, and these migrate clockwise around the stomodeum, establishing pentamerous radial symmetry. Central and radial plates originate on the right side and migrate to a dorsocentral location as pentamerous symmetry is established. Development of the juvenile oral skeletal frame follows closely that described by Hendler (1978) for Amphioplus abditus except that A. occidentalis did not form buccal scales. The juvenile mouth opened by day 12. Fifty-five days after fertilization, juveniles had not added their first arm segments, although the first lateral arm plates had appeared. Developmental stages identical to those described here have been found in plankton tows taken in Oregon usually after storms that bring high waves. The unusual development of this species probably occurs in both benthic and pelagic environments. 相似文献

Holothuroids, or sea cucumbers, are an abundant and diverse group of echinoderms with over 1400 species occurring from the intertidal to the deepest oceanic trenches. In this study, we report the first phylogeny of this class, based on a cladistic analysis of 47 morphological characters. We introduce several previously unconsidered synapomorphic characters, examine the relationships between representatives from all extant families and assess the assumptions of monophyly for each order and subclass. Maximum-parsimony analyses using three rooting methods recovered well-supported and identical topologies when two small and apparently derived families, Eupyrgidae and Ge-phyrothuriidae, were removed. The results suggest that the higher-level arrangement of Holothuroidea warrants a considerable revision. Apodida was sister to the other holothuroids. The monophyly of Dendrochirotida was not supported and the group may be paraphyletic. A randomization test using Wills' gap excess ratio found significant congruence between the phylogeny and the stratigraphic record of fossil members, suggesting that the fossil record of holothuroids is not as incomplete as is often stated. The fossil-calibrated tree indicated that several groups of holothuroids survived the end-Permian mass extinction and that the clade composed of Dendrochirotida, Dactylochirotida, Aspidochirotida and Molpadiida rapidly radiated during the Triassic. 相似文献
