A new species of an atoposaurid crocodilian, Theriosuchus guimarotae, is described from the Late Jurassic (Kimmeridgian) of Portugal. Theriosuchus guimarotae can be distinguished from other species of Theriosuchus by a lateral surface of squamosal bevelled ventrally; a rounded, caudally projecting and dorsally sculptured caudolateral corner of the squamosal; a premaxillomaxillary suture aligned caudomedially in dorsal aspect; a minimum space between the supratemporal foramina that comprises one third of the total width of the cranial table; a minimum width of the frontal between the orbits that comprises one third of the maximum width of the skull at the orbits; a dentition that comprises only pseudocaniniform and lanceolate-shaped teeth; the presence of an external mandibular fenestra and all vertebral bodies amphicoelous. Its osteology also sheds light on the diagnosis of Theriosuchus within Atoposauridae. The material additionally includes specimens representative of several ontogenetic stages, each of which is discussed here. With its Late Jurassic age, T. guimarotae represents the oldest well-preserved material of Theriosuchus and reveals further knowledge about the palaeobiogeography of the genus in western Europe.

The Upper Kimmeridgian—basal Tithonian clastic sequence at Santa Cruz, Estremadura, represents environments ranging from river channels and flood plains to lagoons and protected bays showing a deltaic influence. Within the marginal marine environments, five benthic macroinvertebrate associations are recognized and analysed in terms of diversity and species composition. All five are thought to be controlled largely by salinity and to represent lowered and/or fluctuating salinity regimes. They can be grouped along a salinity gradient in which the Mesosaccella dammariensis—Corbulomima suprajurensis association, occurring in prodelta silts and marls, represents the closest approach to fully marine conditions and in which the Eomiodon securiformis association, typical of delta front sands, extends into the oligohaline regime. Banks of the Isognomon lusitanicum association and patch reefs of the Praeexogyra pustulosa—Nanogyra nana association are thought to be typical of brachy-to mesohaline conditions occurring in brackish bays and lagoons. Characteristic of the latter salinity regimes is also the Jurassicorbula edwardi association. The integrated approach, using benthic faunas, trace fossils and sedimentological data, leads to a detailed interpretation of the sedimentary sequences and the construction of a biofacies model which can also be used for other parts of the Lusitanian Basin.

This paper deals with Neocalamites tubulatus nov. sp., an equisetophyte belonging to the Equisetaceae family. The material studied originates from the Upper Permian deposits of the northern part of European Russia. N. tubulatus nov. sp. is characterized by both sterile and fertile organs belonging to the same parent plant. It has long, flexible stems, rarely branched, with alternating nodes and prolonged ribs on the stem surface corresponding to vascular strands of the stem, and compact lateral strobili, in general aspect similar to the strobili of extant species of Equisetum. N. tubulatus nov. sp. is one of the most ancient representatives of the Equisetaceae family, which shows a distinct morphological pattern of features, among which the lateral position of strobili, characteristic of primitive equisetophytes, is most prominent in this phase of their evolution.

Appendicular elements of the sauropod dinosaur Suuwasseaemilieae, from the Upper Jurassic Morrison Formation of Montana, USA, display a peculiar mix of autapomorphic and plesiomorphic features. While more similar in overall morphology to Apatosaurus than other flagellicaudatans, the coracoid of Suuwassea lacks the quadrangular shape of Apatosaurus. The humerus of Suuwassea bears a pronounced proximal tuberculum, a feature seen elsewhere only in saltasaurine titanosaurian sauropods. The rectangular proximal articular surface of the tibia is proportioned neither like Diplodocus nor Apatosaurus type specimens, although this region may be intraspecifically variable. The pes of Suuwassea possesses plesiomorphically elongate phalanges and a small, uncompressed ungual, unlike other flagellicaudatans except Dyslocosaurus. The localization of tooth marks on the pedal elements suggests that sauropod feet may have been singled out by scavengers, as has been noted for elephants.

Most studies of insect traces on fossil bone deal with one or two trace morphs found on isolated bone fragments, making it difficult to identify the trace-maker and its behavior. We report the discovery of a suite of insect traces on an articulated Camptosaurus dinosaur skeleton that permits the identification of the trace-maker and interpretations of its behavior. The traces include mandible marks, pits, and shallow bores on cortical bone, and deep, meandering furrows and tunnels (borings) on articular surfaces. The interiors of bones are intensely mined, and the cavities and borings are filled with fine bone fragments (insect frass). The distinctive mandible marks consist of opposing sets of parallel grooves, indicating the maker had two apical teeth set on symmetrical mandibles and that all of the traces were made by a single taxon. Comparison of the fossils with the mandible morphology and bone traces of extant insects indicates dermestid beetles made the traces. Based on extant dermestid behavior, soft tissues were likely absent and the bones were lipid-laden when the traces were made. Examination of more than 5,000 bones from the Morrison and Cedar Mountain formations shows insect traces on bone are common but overlooked and that many bones are substantially damaged by insect mining. The key to the recognition of these important yet subtle traces is a search model and an intense, oblique light source.

Yanliaoa is a common fossil in the Middle Jurassic of western Liaoning, eastern Inner Mongolia and northern Hebei Province, China. It is an important element of the Yanliao biota. The genus was established by Pan in 1977 for fossil plants from the Middle Jurassic Haifanggou Formation in Xiasanjiaochengzi, western Liaoning Province, and in present paper, the genus Yanliaoa is studied based on new material. Pan never designated a type specimen and his fossil material cannot be located. We designate a type specimen here for Yanliaoa, so that the genus name Yanliaoa remains valid. Yanliaoa sinensis Pan emend. Tan et al., is found in the same locality and formation as the lost specimens, Y. sinensis of Pan, 1977. Yanliaoa daohugouensis n. sp., a new species with epidermal anatomy, is from the Middle Jurassic Daohugou, Inner Mongolia. A holotype is also selected from the new material for this new species. Characters of the leafy shoots and ovulate cones of Yanliaoa are emended. The epidermal anatomy of this genus is described for the first time. Compared with other extant and extinct species of Cupressaceae s. l., the current species can be distinguished from any known species both by the leafy shoot characters and its epidermal anatomy. It further indicates that Yanliaoa is an extinct and endemic conifer found in the Middle Jurassic of northeastern China.

Two new species of fossil snipe flies (Rhagionidae) from the Daohugou Formation of Chifeng City in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region (northeastern China) are described as Palaeoarthroteles jurassicus nov. sp. and P. pallidius nov. sp. They are the first record of the genus Palaeoarthroteles Kovalev and Mostovski beyond Siberia, which have implications for stratigraphic correlation of the formations in which they are found.

Detailed morphological study of the ring of the Jurassic saturnalid radiolarian species frequently cited in the literature as Hexasaturnalis suboblongus (Yao) has proven that it contains two well-defined species: H. suboblongus (Yao), practically ranging within the boundaries of the Bajocian, and Hexasaturnalis nakasekoi nov. sp., ranging within the Bathonian-Kimmeridgian interval. The two species seem to be important stratigraphically because the transition from the former to the latter took place at or around the Bajocian/Bathonian boundary. The phyletic lineage Hexasaturnalis hexagonus (Yao) → H. inuyamaensis (Yao) → H. suboblongus (Yao) → H. nakasekoi nov. sp. → H. minor (Baumgartner) → Dicerosaturnalis angustus (Baumgartner) → D. dicranacanthos (Squinabol) is proposed.

A study of the bioerosion structures and the skeletobionts associated with the most common bivalves (infauna and epifauna) from the classic Upper Tortonian site of Cacela, Algarve region, SE Portugal, revealed 24 different ichnotaxa and five systematic groups of encrusters (Foraminifera, Annelida, Bryozoa, Balanomorpha and Bivalvia).Despite a relatively high ichnodiversity, the percentage of bioerosion in the specimens analysed is quite low (10-12%). This is explained by rapid sedimentation with only short periods of exposure on the sea-floor.The dominant bioerosion structures were linked to the boring activity of nonpredatory organisms. Algal microborings are the most common, followed by annelid borings (Caulostrepsis-Maeandropolydora), sponge borings (Entobia) and ctenostome bryozoans (Pinaceocladichnus).Spatial distribution of bioerosion structures and encrusters allow the reconstruction of three successive stages. The first was restricted to the biosubstrate lifetime, with structures showing a preferred orientation and situated exclusively on the outside of the shells. The second comprises the period immediately after death, with structures that extend outwards and start with the colonization of the interior of the valves, losing their initial orientation. The third stage relates to later postmortem colonisation, with structures on both sides of the valves and without a preferential orientation.

The extremes of dinosaur body size have long fascinated scientists. The smallest (<1 m length) known dinosaurs are carnivorous saurischian theropods, and similarly diminutive herbivorous or omnivorous ornithischians (the other major group of dinosaurs) are unknown. We report a new ornithischian dinosaur, Fruitadens haagarorum, from the Late Jurassic of western North America that rivals the smallest theropods in size. The largest specimens of Fruitadens represent young adults in their fifth year of development and are estimated at just 65–75 cm in total body length and 0.5–0.75 kg body mass. They are thus the smallest known ornithischians. Fruitadens is a late-surviving member of the basal dinosaur clade Heterodontosauridae, and is the first member of this clade to be described from North America. The craniodental anatomy and diminutive body size of Fruitadens suggest that this taxon was an ecological generalist with an omnivorous diet, thus providing new insights into morphological and palaeoecological diversity within Dinosauria. Late-surviving (Late Jurassic and Early Cretaceous) heterodontosaurids are smaller and less ecologically specialized than Early (Late Triassic and Early Jurassic) heterodontosaurids, and this ecological generalization may account in part for the remarkable 100-million-year-long longevity of the clade.

A cervical vertebra preserved at the famous and productive Cleveland-Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry in the Upper Jurassic Morrison Formation of Utah is that of an Apatosaurus, a sauropod dinosaur genus not previously recognized at the site and the first new dinosaur taxon identified at the site in years. The presence of Apatosaurus at a mudstone site dominated by other taxa, both theropod and sauropod, suggests a pattern of preservation within the Morrison Formation in which sites in fine-grained sediments yield dramatically uneven relative abundances of dinosaurs, with variable dominant taxa by site, compared with more time-averaged and attritional coarse-grained channel sandstone deposits. In addition, the continued demonstration of the wide-spread occurrence and abundance of Apatosaurus within the Morrison Formation, and the absence of its clade among diplodocid faunas on other continents, suggest that this group may have been endemic to North America during the Late Jurassic and that it may have originated there, though this is far from clear.

Calcification and primary production responses to irradiance in the temperate coralline alga Lithothamnion corallioides were measured in summer 2004 and winter 2005 in the Bay of Brest. Coralline algae were incubated in dark and clear bottles exposed to different irradiances. Net primary production reached 1.5 μmol C g−1 dry wt h−1 in August and was twice as high as in January–February. Dark respiration showed significant seasonal variations, being three-fold higher in summer. Maximum calcification varied from 0.6 μmol g−1 dry wt h−1 in summer 2004 to 0.4 μmol g−1 dry wt h−1 in winter 2005. According to P–E curves and the daily course of irradiance, estimated daily net production and calcification reached 131 μg C g−1 dry wt and 970 μg CaCO3 g−1 dry wt in summer 2004, and 36 μg C g−1 dry wt and 336 μg CaCO3 g−1 dry wt in winter 2005. The net primary production of natural L. corallioides populations in shallow waters was estimated at 10–600 g C m−2 y−1, depending on depth and algal biomass. The mean annual calcification of L. corallioides populations varied from 300 to 3000 g CaCO3 m−2. These results are similar to those reported for tropical coralline algae in terms of carbon and carbonate productivity. Therefore, L. corallioides can be considered as a key element of carbon and carbonate cycles in the shallow coastal waters where they live.

Scinderella scopuliformis nov. gen., nov. sp. is identified in the Anisian (Middle Triassic) reef limestones from the Belski dol quarry (Ivanš?ica Mt., NW Croatia). The new alga is characterised by claviform thallus, curved in the basal part, and very narrow central cavity. Thallus is often disintegrated into fragments. Laterals swell from a thin basal part, and have uniform (rarely slightly increasing) diameter along most of their length. Distally, they are flattened and probably touch each other, forming an irregular cortex. Laterals are arranged densely in close whorls and oblique to the longitudinal axis. Euspondyl arrangement is readily visible in the proximal part of the laterals, but distally, the arrangement seems more or less irregular, i.e. ruffled (Lat. scindere = ruffle, dishevel) and resembling a broom (Lat. scopulae = small broom; forma = form, shape).

The type specimens of the Jurassic turtles from the Sichuan Basin (China) previously referred to plesiochelyid Plesiochelys are revised, which confirm that they belong to the family Xinjiangchelyidae. The study of a large number of additional shell material shows, as the dominant group, the Xinjiangchelyidae were greatly diversified in the Late Jurassic of the Sichuan Basin. By the absence of mesoplastron and other shell characters, Chengyuchelys baenoides is moved to Xinjiangchelyidae and considered as a valid taxon. Of the xinjiangchelyids from the Late Jurassic of Sichuan Basin, four genera are recognized: Chengyuchelys, Tienfuchelys, Yanduchelys and cf. Protoxinjiangchelys. The phylogenetic analysis results in that Chengyuchelys includes C. baenoides, C. latimarginalis and C. radiplicatus, and Tienfuchelys consists of T. tzuyangensis, T. chungkingensis and T. zigongensis. All xinjiangchelyids from the Sichuan Basin are more primitive than Xinjiangchelys in the plastron sutured to the carapace.

The first total synthesis for the (Z)-17-methyl-13-octadecenoic acid was accomplished in seven steps and in a 45% overall yield. The use of (trimethylsilyl)acetylene was key in the synthesis. Based on a previous developed strategy in our laboratory the best synthetic route towards the title compound was first acetylide coupling of (trimethylsilyl)acetylene to the long-chain protected 12-bromo-1-dodecanol followed by a second acetylide coupling to the short-chain 3-methyl-1-bromobutane, which resulted in higher yields. Complete spectral data is also presented for the first time for this recently discovered fatty acid. The title compound displayed antiprotozoal activity against Leishmania donovani (EC50 = 19.8 μg/ml) and inhibited the leishmania DNA topoisomerase IB at concentrations of 50 μM.
