Contemporary German is known for its complex system of linking elements. They not only show different degrees of productivity (between unproductive -es- and very productive -s-), but also exhibit functional diversity, with some of them even allowing plural interpretation, e.g. -er- in Völk+er+kunde ‘ethnology’ vs. Volk+s+kunde ‘folklore’. In this paper, we argue that this is due to the complex historical development from two different sources. The first layer of linking elements, which arose out of Germanic primary suffixes, was reduced to one member, the “older” linking -e-, already in Old High German (e.g. in NHG Tag+e+werk ‘daily task’). The current functional diversity of the linking elements is primarily due to the later evolution out of inflectional endings. The dissociation from the second source has included a gradual change of the assignment rules from lexical (gender, declension class) to prosodic (formal) level. Thus, the current distribution of the most developed linking -s- is the most formalized one, as it can be directly deduced from the prosodic form of the first constituent. The development of the second layer of linking elements resembles the process of grammaticalization. However, linking elements form part of word formation and therefore are not the typical result of grammaticalization.  相似文献

Morphological analyses usually prefer ‘deriving’ form-identities as systematic syncretism over just stating them in terms of accidental homophony. While such anti-homophony is mostly assumed implicitly, Müller (2004) spells it out more explicitly as violable Syncretism Principle guiding both language acquisition and linguistic analysis (‘same form → same meaning’). However, as soon as the child or linguist decomposes word forms into smaller formatives (morpheme segmentation, subanalysis), it is unclear what instances of form-identity exactly are to be avoided (e.g. substring-identities?). This paper frames the logical space of possible Syncretism Principle interpretations, which relate to their functional motivation (ambiguity avoidance) demonstrating their concrete consequences for analysis with a paradigm learning algorithm offering segmentation and meaning assignment.  相似文献

Several dialectal variants of the inflectional ending for person, number, tense, and voice in the Modern Greek past imperfective nonactive paradigm are presented here by way of showing the relevance of dialect material for linguistic theory. In this case, the endings underwent reshapings based on other related endings (e.g., 3PL based on 1/2PL), providing a basis for understanding the nature of interactions among different “cells” within a paradigm and the constructs that can be employed to model them. As a result, both rules of referral and O–O correspondence relations are shown to have to take sub-word similarities into consideration, and various constraints on such interactions are considered and rejected in favor of a liberal view that allows for any cell to relate to any other cell. Finally, a distinction is motivated, based on cell-to-cell influences, between adventitious and significant syncretism of form.  相似文献

This paper addresses the question of how certain kinds of overlapping syncretisms in inflectional paradigms can be accounted for that Baerman et al. (Language 80:807–824, 2005) refer to as convergent/divergent bidirectional syncretisms (based on earlier work by Stump, Inflectional morphology, 2001). Bidirectional syncretism strongly resists accounts in terms of standard rules of exponence (or similar devices) that correlate inflection markers with (often underspecified) morpho-syntactic specifications (such rules are used in many morphological theories; e.g., Anderson, A-morphous morphology, 1992; Halle and Marantz in The view from building, pp. 111–176, 1993; Aronoff, Morphology by itself, 1994; Wunderlich in Yearbook of morphology 1995, pp. 93–114, 1996; and Stump, Inflectional morphology, 2001). The reason is that it is difficult to capture overlapping distributions by natural classes. In view of this, rules of referral have been proposed to derive bidirectional syncretism (Stump, Inflectional morphology, 2001; Baerman et al. (Language 80:807–824, 2005)). In contrast, I would like to pursue the hypothesis that systematic instances of overlapping syncretism ultimately motivate a new approach to inflectional morphology—one that fully dispenses with the assumption that morphological exponents are paired with morpho-syntactic feature specifications (and that therefore qualifies as radically non-morphemic): First, rules of exponence are replaced with feature co-occurrence restrictions (FCRs; Gazdar et al., Generalized Phrase Structure Grammar, 1985). For phonologically determined natural classes of exponents, FCRs state incompatibilites with morpho-syntactic feature specifications. Second, marker competition is resolved by a principle of Phonology-driven Marker Selection (PMS). PMS takes over the role of the Specificity (Blocking, Elsewhere, Panini) Principle of standard analyses. Empirically, the main focus is on Bonan declension; the analysis is subsequently extended to Gujarati conjugation and Latin o-declension, with further remarks on bidirectional syncretism in other inflectional paradigms.  相似文献

What are the relations between the discourse of ‘multiculturalism’ and that of ‘indigeneity’ in Australia? In problematising these relations this paper explores the affiliations that Latin American migrants and political refugees living in Adelaide have with the notion of indigeneity. For some Latin Americans affiliations with the struggle of Aboriginal people and indigeneity is a product of strong political identification with the political left and the struggle for human rights in their countries of origin. At the same time references to Latin Americans' indigeneity are often evoked within Australian multicultural settings and performances that promote ‘cultural diversity’ and are consumed by White Australians for their exotic otherness and as forms of cultural enrichment. Such representations work to marginalise further the migrants (and the ‘indigenous’) into a cultural sphere which marks them as the tolerated ethnic ‘Other’.  相似文献

This paper explores the syncretic accommodations made by North Mekeo (PNG) villagers arising from recent historical encounters with Catholic (Sacred Heart) missionaries over issues of ritual authenticity and effectiveness, personhood, and agency in a wider field of Christian evangelism and globalisation. Through a careful examination and comparison of pre‐existing ritual notions and practices (e.g., sorcery techniques, mortuary ritual performance, gender rituals) and the recent trends of commodification and enthusiastic Catholic charismatic performance, what might appear to be incongruous religious beliefs and practices are shown to possess numerous remarkably compatible similarities at the level of explicit cultural categorisation and ritual enactment. In accord with long‐standing anthropological arguments, recent North Mekeo syncretism thus consists of an integrated, albeit transformed rather than ‘confused’, mixing of indigenous and exogenous religious elements. Further, in this analysis of recent Melanesian religious change syncretism implies a novel conceptual convergence between syncretic processes and the dynamics of personhood, sociality and agency as construed in the framework of the ‘new Melanesian ethnography’.  相似文献

Recent progress in the molecular biology of synaptic transmission, in particular of neurotransmitter receptors, offers novel information relevant to ‘realistic’ modeling of neural processes at the single cell and network level. Sophisticated computer analyses of 2D crystals by high resolution electron microscopy yield images of single neurotransmitter receptor molecules with tentative identifications of ligand binding sites and of conformational transitions. The dynamics of conformational changes can be accounted for by a ‘multistate allosteric network’ model. Allosteric receptors also possess the structural and functional properties required to serve as coincidence detectors between pre- and post-synaptic signals and, therefore, can be used as building blocks for a chemical Hebb synapse. These properties were introduced into networks of formal neurons capable of producing and detecting temporal sequences. In more elaborate models of pre-frontal cortex functions, allosteric receptors control the selection of transient ‘pre-representations’ and their stabilization by external or internal reward signals. We apply this scheme to Shallice's Tower of London test, and we show how a hierarchical neuronal architecture can implement executive or planning functions associated with frontal areas.  相似文献

In this review, the symptoms contributing to the opioid-induced ‘catatonia’ are presented in detail, and efforts are made to relate these symptoms to opioid-induced alterations in neurotransmitter metabolism in several parts of brain, in particular in the basal ganglia. One important symptom is the muscular rigidity, which is, at least to a great part, mediated by opioid receptors in the striatum. This effect is probably not due to an action on opioid receptors located on endings of nigro-striatal dopaminergic neurones (localization I in Fig. 2), but on receptors located on neurones, the cell bodies of which are within the striatum (localization II) or much less likely on receptors on endings of glutamergic, cortico-striatal neurones (localization IV). Another characteristic symptom, the akinesia, can be induced by injections into the nucleus accumbens, which do not lead to any significant muscular rigidity. Accordingly, opioid-induced muscular rigidity and akinesia can be dissociated topographically, and it is shown by this observation that the opioid-induced ‘catatonia’ is due to an interference of at least two different signs. ‘Catalepsy’, on the other hand, is probably the consequence of a very pronounced akinesia, and spontaneously occurring rigidity does not seem to contribute to it. In addition, opioids can induce-after low doses immediately, after high doses subsequently to the depressory phase-signs of behavioural stimulation (locomotor stimulation, some stereotypic behaviour), which seem to be antagonistic to the ‘catatonia’ from the functional standpoint. Several types of behavioural stimulation seem to exist, with different localizations. An activation of nigro-striatal and mesolimbic dopaminergic neurones seems to be of particular relevance in the behavioural stimulation, which is due to actions of opioids on receptors located within the substantia nigra (on endings of afferent neurones, localization III in Fig. 2) and/or within the ventral tegmentum. Part of this dopaminergic activation might be, in addition, due to actions on opioid receptors located on dopaminergic nerve endings within the striatum (localization I) or the nucleus accumbens. A hypothesis for the biphasic action of opioids (first behavioural depression, then activation is presented, involving a lower sensitivity (eg affinity) of those receptors mediating ‘catatonia’. Finally, it is discussed that a detailed study of opioid action on basal ganglia might perhaps give relevant information about some pathophysiological mechanisms in schizophrenic diseases, in Parkinson's disease and in psychic dependence on opioids.  相似文献

MOTIVATION: Phylogenetic shadowing is a comparative genomics principle that allows for the discovery of conserved regions in sequences from multiple closely related organisms. We develop a formal probabilistic framework for combining phylogenetic shadowing with feature-based functional annotation methods. The resulting model, a generalized hidden Markov phylogeny (GHMP), applies to a variety of situations where functional regions are to be inferred from evolutionary constraints. RESULTS: We show how GHMPs can be used to predict complete shared gene structures in multiple primate sequences. We also describe shadower, our implementation of such a prediction system. We find that shadower outperforms previously reported ab initio gene finders, including comparative human-mouse approaches, on a small sample of diverse exonic regions. Finally, we report on an empirical analysis of shadower's performance which reveals that as few as five well-chosen species may suffice to attain maximal sensitivity and specificity in exon demarcation. Using the 2003 New Immigrant Survey data, we explore marital behaviour among new immigrants in the USA. Marital assimilation with mainstream US natives was highest among European immigrants, followed by Latin Americans, Southeast Asians, East Asians, and finally South Asians. There is no single ‘Asian’ pattern of marital assimilation. While South Asians and East Asians defy the classical assimilation theory with their strong resistance to intermarriage within the mainstream despite their high degree of structural assimilation, Southeast Asians display high rates of such marital assimilation. Europeans, as predicted by classical theory, evince high rate of marital assimilation. Latin Americans and Southeast Asians lie in between the two extremes of Europeans and other Asian subgroups. While they seem to follow a path of segmented assimilation by demonstrating within-region endogamy, compared to Europeans they have only a slightly higher propensity to marry within their nationality, suggesting ongoing assimilation along classical lines.  相似文献

This article explores the tensed sociality amongst precariously employed service economy workers in the retail outlets of a prominent eyewear company in New Delhi, India. The bickering staff label the ongoing interpersonal strife ‘dirty politics’. Linked to this are their confident assertions that, in fact, all politics is dirty, and dirty politics is the only type of politics possible – rejecting formal party politics and labour unions as morally vacuous and motivated by utilitarian individualism. Engaging with the anthropology of ordinary ethics, the article demonstrates how the affectively charged experience and talk of petty politicking on the neoliberal workfloor provides critical ‘evidence’ that ‘confirms’ such a politico-ethical view.  相似文献

The nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region is the formal fungal barcode and in most cases the marker of choice for the exploration of fungal diversity in environmental samples. Two problems are particularly acute in the pursuit of satisfactory taxonomic assignment of newly generated ITS sequences: (i) the lack of an inclusive, reliable public reference data set and (ii) the lack of means to refer to fungal species, for which no Latin name is available in a standardized stable way. Here, we report on progress in these regards through further development of the UNITE database ( http://unite.ut.ee ) for molecular identification of fungi. All fungal species represented by at least two ITS sequences in the international nucleotide sequence databases are now given a unique, stable name of the accession number type (e.g. Hymenoscyphus pseudoalbidus|GU586904|SH133781.05FU), and their taxonomic and ecological annotations were corrected as far as possible through a distributed, third‐party annotation effort. We introduce the term ‘species hypothesis’ (SH) for the taxa discovered in clustering on different similarity thresholds (97–99%). An automatically or manually designated sequence is chosen to represent each such SH. These reference sequences are released ( http://unite.ut.ee/repository.php ) for use by the scientific community in, for example, local sequence similarity searches and in the QIIME pipeline. The system and the data will be updated automatically as the number of public fungal ITS sequences grows. We invite everybody in the position to improve the annotation or metadata associated with their particular fungal lineages of expertise to do so through the new Web‐based sequence management system in UNITE.  相似文献

Over the past decades, a wealth of findings has led to a substantial change in the assumed complexity of classical conditioning. The combined evidence indicates that temporal pairing is neither necessary nor sufficient for the formation of an associative connection. At the same time, studies of model invertebrate nervous systems have allowed us to ask a series of questions about the molecular basis of associative conditioning. The discovery of a pairing-sensitive mechanism in the gill-withdrawal circuitry of Aplysia is regarded as the hallmark of the reductionist approach. This review outlines the insights gathered from behavioral and neurobiological studies. Furthermore, the conceptual frameworks guiding research at the ‘what’ and ‘how’ levels of analysis are compared and contrasted. I argue that a rich cognitive view of conditioning has emerged at the ‘what’ level, whereas the traditional notion of temporal pairing still drives research at the ‘how’ level. A complete account of classical conditioning has to await the resolving of this discordance.  相似文献

The Modern Synthesis enshrined natural selection as the driver of adaptive evolution mainly by eliminating competing explanations. One of the eliminated competitors was Lamarckism, particularly ‘mutational Lamarckism’, a hypothesis according to which mutations may be directed towards producing phenotypes that improve the performance of the organism in a particular environment. Contrary to this hypothesis, the Modern Synthesis' view claims that mutations are ‘random’, even though the precise meaning of the term was never formally explicated. Current evidence seemingly in favour of the existence of legitimate cases of mutational Lamarckism has revitalized interest to seek a clarification of the meaning of the term ‘random’ in this context. Herein we analyse previous definitions of random mutations and show that they are deficient in three ways: either they are too wide, or too narrow, or dyadic. We argue that the linguistic expression ‘random mutation’ refers to a triadic rather than a dyadic relationship, propose a new, formal and precise definition based on the probabilistic concept of conditional independence, and finally provide examples of its application. One important consequence of our analysis is that the genomic specificity of the mutational process is not a necessary condition for the existence of mutational Lamarckism.  相似文献
