We conducted grazing experiments to test whether larger-bodiedDaphnia pulicaria have a different effect from smaller-bodiedDaphnia galeata mendotae on the composition of summer algalassemblages in eutrophic lakes. Three separate cubitainer experimentswere run for 5 days in a replicated factorial design utilizingtwo algal community types and the two Daphnia species. Inorganicphosphorus and nitrogen were added to prevent nutrient limitationof the algae. Both edible and inedible size fractions of chlorophylla increased in cubitainers without Daphnia spp. Grazer additionusually resulted in a reduction in edible chlorophyll; reductionswere greater in D.pulicaria cubitainers. Grazing by Daphniaspp. on presumed inedible chlorophyll was variable. Algal sizewas not always a good predictor of grazeability. The resultsof this study indicate that D.pulicaria, because of its greaterfiltration potential and ability to ingest larger particles, provides a stronger control on inedible-sized algae when comparedto equal numerical densities of D.g.mendotae. However, Aphanizomenonincreased as a response to heavy grazing pressure by D.pulicariaon other algal species. This suggests that biomanipulation effortsthat promote large-bodied Daphnia may not produce desirableresults if nutrient inputs remain high.  相似文献

Detritus derived from the filamentous cyanobacterium ,Oscillatorialimnetica was fed to Daphnia galeataDetritus supported growthand reproduction comparable to that on the green alga Scenedesmusobliquus. The live filaments of O.limnetica were, however, oflower food quality. Biochemical parameters of these food types, thought to be important in Daphnia nutrition, were also determined. It is concluded that detritus can be a good quality food forDaphnia, making eutrophic lakes better food environments thangenerally assumed. 1Present address: Department of Applied Chemistry and Microbiology,Division of Microbiology, BiocenterViikki, FIN-00014 HelsinkiUniversity, Finland  相似文献

1. We studied the effects of fish water and temperature on mechanisms of competitive exclusion among two Daphnia species in flow‐through microcosms. The large‐bodied D. pulicaria outcompeted the medium sized D. galeata × hyalina in fish water, but not in the control treatment. Daphnia galeata × hyalina was competitively displaced 36 days earlier at 18 °C than at 12 °C. 2. It is likely that the high phosphorus content of fish water increased the nutritional value of detrital seston particles by stimulating bacterial growth. Daphnia pulicaria was presumably better able to use these as food and hence showed a more rapid somatic growth than its competitor. This led to very high density of D. pulicaria in fish water, but not in the controls. The elevated D. pulicaria density coincided with high mortality and reduced fecundity in D. galeata × hyalina, resulting in competitive displacement of the hybrid. 3. It is clear that the daphnids competed for a limiting resource, as grazing caused a strong decrease in their seston food concentration. However, interference may also have played a role, as earlier studies have shown larger Daphnia species to be dominant in this respect. The high density of large‐bodied D. pulicaria in fish water may have had an allelopathic effect on the hybrid. Our data are inconclusive with respect to whether the reached seston concentration was below the threshold resource level (R*) of the hybrid, where population growth rate and mortality exactly balance, as it would be set in the absence of interference, or whether interference actually raised the hybrid's R* to a value above this equilibrium particle concentration. 4. Our results do clearly show that fish‐released compounds mediated competitive exclusion among zooplankton species and that such displacement occurred at a greatly enhanced rate at an elevated temperature. Fish may thus not only structure zooplankton communities directly through size‐selective predation, but also indirectly through the compounds they release.  相似文献

Recently, it has been shown that ratios of chlorophyll a toparticulate phosphorus (Chl a/PP) and chlorophyll a to particulatenitrogen (Chl a/PN) were significantly higher in eutrophic thanoligo/mesotrophic waters in 17 lakes on the central volcanicplateau, North Island, New Zealand. This difference was thoughtto be due to an increase in the chlorophyll a content of phytoplanktonin these eutrophic lakes. Corresponding measurements of chlorophylla and phytoplankton cell volume made during this study do notsupport this hypothesis. However, ratios of chlorophyll a toadenosine triphosphate and estimates of percentage phytoplanktonbiomass were significantly higher (P<0.05) in our eutrophicthan oligo/mesotrophic samples, suggesting that Chl a/PP andChl a/PN may be high in eutrophic waters simply because phytoplanktoncomprise more of the total microbial biomass. This hypothesisis supported by a strong linear relationship (r=0.88, P<0.001)between Chl a/PP and percentage phytoplankton biomass in sixof our study lakes where corresponding measurements were made.  相似文献

1. The growth rate hypothesis predicts positive relationships among growth rate (μ), body RNA (%RNA of dry mass) and body P (%P of dry mass) contents. 2. We tested this within‐ and across‐species by growing five species/clones of Daphnia (Daphnia magna, Daphnia pulex, Daphnia galeata and two isolates of Daphnia pulicaria) with different combinations of food quantity and stoichiometric food quality. 3. Within each species, positive correlations among μ, %RNA and %P were seen and across species there was a strong association between%RNA and %P, consistent with the growth rate hypothesis. However, coupling of growth to %RNA and to %P differed for different species. In particular, the %RNA–μ and %P–μ relationships had similar slopes but considerably different y‐intercepts (i.e.%P or %RNA at zero growth), with D. pulicaria and D. galeata having higher intercepts than D. magna and especially D. pulex. As a result of these displacements, the relative rankings of the species on the basis of %P and %RNA did not correspond to their rankings based on μ. 4. These findings suggest that within a narrow clade (e.g. the daphnids), interspecific differences in body P content may reflect not growth rate‐related RNA allocation but instead the amount of RNA required for support of maintenance processes.  相似文献

In spring and early summer, a small population of the large-bodied Daphnia pulicaria coexists with a much larger population of the medium-sized hybrid Daphnia galeata × hyalina in the epilimnion of Lake Maarsseveen (The Netherlands). When large shoals of juvenile perch (Perca fluviatilis) appear in the open water, both species start to migrate vertically. Since D. pulicaria has a larger body-size than D. galeata × hyalina, and is therefore competitive dominant over the hybrid, it is unlikely that both species interact via their common food resource, but they react both to fish predation. However, since they differ in size, and therefore in vulnerability for fish predation, both species adopt different strategies. The smaller bodied, and less vulnerable D. galeata × hyalina exhibits diel vertical migration ascending to the surface at dusk, and staying there during the night. In this way, benefiting from the higher temperatures of the surface layers. In contrast, the large-bodied, and more vulnerable D. pulicaria selects the deep cold hypolimnion water layers as refuge against fish predation. In this way it benefits from a safe habitat, free from fish predators, but on the other hand suffers from low water temperatures, which decrease its fitness. It is likely that the relatively higher temperature in the upper water layers serves as a proximate factor for the downward migration of D. pulicaria.  相似文献

Can phaeopigments be used as markers for Daphnia grazing in Lake Constance?   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The formation of chlorophyll a degradation products was measuredwith natural phytoplankton from Lake Constance and Daphnia magnaand native Daphnia as grazers in grazing experiments duringspring bloom conditions using high-pressure liquid chromatography(HPLC). Chlorophyll a start concentrations were between 1.2and 16.3 µg l–1; phaeopigment weights constituted5% of chlorophyll a weight. Only phaeophorbide a was a markerfor Daphnia grazing; concentrations of other phaeopigments (phaeophytina, chlorophyllide a and two unidentified phaeopigments) didnot increase during Daphnia grazing. Conversion efficiencies(chlorophyll a to phaeophorbide a) were between 0 and 43% ona weight basis, and between 0 and 65% on a molar basis. Conversionefficiencies were highest at high grazer density (40 Daphnial–1) and after a 24 h exposure time. Grazing by microzooplanktonprobably led to the formation of the two unidentified phaeopigments. In Lake Constance, Daphnia density was significantly positivelycorrelated with the phaeophorbide a/chlorophyll a ratio whenit was <5000 Daphnia m–3. However, when higher Daphniadensities were included in calculations, then Daphnia densitywas positively, but insignificantly, correlated with the phaeophorbidea/chlorophyll a ratio. This suggests that when the level offood per Daphnia is low, then grazing is more efficient withless production of phaeophorbide a and a higher production ofcolourless products.  相似文献

Daphnids respond to algae-associated odours   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Using a Y-tube olfactometer, it was found that Daphnia galeatax hyalina moves to the arm with odour from either of two ediblealgal species (Scenedesmus acuminatus and Oscillatoria limnetica)rather than to the alternative arm with clean water. However,no differential response was observed when odours of the toxiccyanobacterium (Oscillatoria agardhu) were tested. We suggestthat odours associated with edible algae attract Daphnia whereasnon-edible algae do not elicit attraction of Daphnia.  相似文献

The effects of microcystins on Daphnia galeata, a typical filter-feeding grazer in eutrophic lakes, were investigated. To do this, the microcystin-producing wild-type strain Microcystis aeruginosa PCC7806 was compared with a mcy PCC7806 mutant, which could not synthesize any variant of microcystin due to mutation of a microcystin synthetase gene. The wild-type strain was found to be poisonous to D. galeata, whereas the mcy mutant did not have any lethal effect on the animals. Both variants of PCC7806 were able to reduce the Daphnia ingestion rate. Our results suggest that microcystins are the most likely cause of the daphnid poisoning observed when wild-type strain PCC7806 is fed to the animals, but these toxins are not responsible for inhibition of the ingestion process.  相似文献

Summary Two commonly coexisting species of Daphnia segregate by habitat in many stratified lakes. Daphnia pulicaria is mostly found in the hypolimnion whereas D. galeata mendotae undergoes diel vertical migration between the hypolimnion and the epilimnion. I examined how habitat segregation between these two potentially competing species might be affected by trophic interactions with their resources and predators by performing a field experiment in deep enclosures in which I manipulated fish predation, nutrient levels, and the density of epilimnetic Daphnia. The results of the experiment indicate that habitat use by D. pulicaria can be jointly regulated by competition for food from epilimnetic Daphnia and predation by fishes. Patterns of habitat segregation between the two Daphnia species were determined by predation by fish but not by nutrient levels: The removal of epilimnetic fish predators resulted in higher zooplankton and lower epilimnetic phytoplankton densities and allowed D. pulicaria to expand its habitat distribution into the epilimnion. In contrast, increased resource productivity resulted in higher densities of both Daphnia species but did not affect phytoplankton levels or habitat use by Daphnia. The two species exhibit a trade-off in their ability to exploit resources and their susceptibility to predation by fish. D. g. mendotae (the less susceptible species) may thus restrict D. pulicaria (the better resource exploiter) from the epilimnion when fish are common due to lower minimum resource requirements than those needed by D. pulicaria to offset the higher mortality rate imposed by selective epilimnetic fish predators. D. g. mendotae does not appear to have this effect in the absence of fish.  相似文献

In Lake Washington, juvenile sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka)strongly prefer Daphnia over other prey, switching uniformlyto Daphnia when the threshold abundance of 0.4 Daphnia L–1is achieved. Using long-term Lake Washington data (1978–2001)and fry trap data (1992–2001) from a major tributary,we examined the following: (i) factors that predict Daphniapulicaria and Daphnia thorata increase to this threshold "switching"abundance, (ii) trends in Daphnia dynamics that may affect sockeyeforaging and (iii) temporal correspondence of Daphnia increaseand fry arrival. The winter abundance of D. pulicaria, in combinationwith basic parameters of spring conditions, was an importantpredictor of the date of D. pulicaria spring increase, indicatinggreater reliance on pelagic population dynamics (versus diapausehatch) than D. thorata exhibited. In addition, D. pulicariawas a more consistent prey than D. thorata, the latter exhibitinglarger population fluctuations. Thus, recently increasing D.thorata prominence could decrease diet consistency for sockeyefry. Additionally, the timing of sockeye arrival to Lake Washingtonand Daphnia’s increase to the switching threshold hasbecome less concordant, so that fry in recent years have hadto rely upon less profitable prey for longer periods. Long-termtrends and species-specific differences in Daphnia phenologymay affect fry through altering diet composition, with additionalimplications for other zooplankton withstanding greater predationpressure in Daphnia’s absence. Recent decades of warmingin Lake Washington are consistent with the warming of lakesworldwide, and complex phenological responses such as thosereported here may be common as the climate continues to change.  相似文献

Competition in natural populations of Daphnia   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4

I investigated the competitive relationships between two species of Daphnia, D. galeata and D. cucullata, and their interspecific hybrid. The term hemispecific competition was introduced to describe competition between parental species and hybrids. In eutrophic Tjeukemeer both parental species were found to compete with the hybrid, whereas competition between D. galeata and D. cucullata seemed limited. Although the effect of competition on life history traits of daphnids may be profound, the influence of the competitors on the seasonal dynamics of the Daphnia species seems limited.  相似文献

Field data from seven alpine lakes in Serra da Estrela. Portugal.show that reproduction in Daphnia may be as efficiently controlledby fish predation and copepod predation on eggs in brood cavitiesas it is by food limitation. Body length and clutch size estimatesin Daphnia pulicaria revealed high inter- and intra-populationvariability in maturation size (body size at first reproduction).and in number of eggs per clutch. Daphnia at first maturationin lakes stocked with rainbow trout were half the size of thosefound in fishless lakes (body length of 0.86–0.95 and1.55–1.81 mm. respectively). The mean number of eggs perclutch was reduced to a similar degree by food limitation, predationby fish and copepod predation on eggs in brood cavities, butthe underlying mechanisms of this reduction were different.Food limitation caused smaller clutch sizes in all individuals,so variation remained the same. Fish predation caused the selectiveremoval of individuals with maximum clutches, so variation decreased.Copepod predation caused removal of eggs from brood cavitiesof randomly infested females, so that variation increased, particularlyat a high food level when non-infested females carried largeclutches of eggs.  相似文献

In order to explain differences in the growth and reproductionof Daphnia pulicaria fed various freshwater diatoms, we measuredingestion rates and carbon incorporation for six cultured diatomspecies: the single-celled Stephanodiscus hantzschii, Stephanodiscusminutulus and Cyclotella meneghiniana, and the colony-formingAsterionella formosa, Fragilaria capucina and Fragilaria sp.Two of the colony-forming species, when damaged, produced polyunsaturatedaldehydes (oxylipins) that have been found to impair the reproductionof marine copepods. We tested two hypotheses: (i) feeding andincorporation rates are affected by diatom morphology; and (ii)polyunsaturated aldehydes act as feeding deterrents. Daphniabody length versus ingestion rate regressions differed for single-celledand colony-forming diatoms. Ingestion rates for single-celleddiatoms showed clear size dependencies and high correlationcoefficients, while the dependency was weak for colony-formingdiatoms and individual variability was high. This differencewas not observed for carbon incorporation rates, which showedlow variability for all diatoms. Asterionella formosa yieldedthe lowest incorporation rates due to low incorporation efficiency, while all other diatoms were incorporated at similar rates. Thus, morphological differences of the diatoms had no effecton carbon uptake by Daphnia. The presence or absence of polyunsaturatedaldehydes did not cause different ingestion rates; hence thealdehydes are not feeding deterrents.  相似文献

The population dynamics of Daphnia species (D.cucullata, D.ambigua,D.galeata) in two small, productive lakes were studied and experimentswith field enclosures were carried out to elucidate the ecologicalniches of the introduced, alien species D.ambigua. Daphnia ambiguocoexisted temporally with the similarly sized D.cucullata, butlived in deeper water. Although both species had the same clutchsizes, similar proportions of ovigerous females, and death rates.D.cucullata was nurnerically dominant over D.ambigua. This suggeststhat the observed difference in abundance is simply a resultof the slower population growth rates of D.ambigua at lowertemperatures in greater depths. The experiments with field enclosuresshowed that when D.culcullata and D.ambigua were forced to livein the same layer of water, D.ambigua was numerically dominantover D.culullata both in the enclosures with and without fish.As the difference between the abundances of the two speciesdecreased in the enclosure with fish, D.cucullata seems to bebetter protected against fish predation than D.ambigua. In theenclosures without fish, D.ambigua and D.cucullata were numericallysurpassed by the larger species D.galeara. The present resultsimply that in some productive lakes with a high fish stock,D.mbigua invaded the niche of D.galeara and that the speciescan become an important component of the native zooplankton. The results also support the opinion that co-existing Daphniacan have very similar dynamics and niches. 1 Present address: Zoologisches Institut, Christian-Albrechts-UniversitätKiel, Olshausenstrasse 40, D-24098 Kiel, FRG  相似文献

Habitat use and ecological specialization within lake Daphnia populations   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Many species of planktonic cladocerans display substantial variation in habitat use (mean depth and diel vertical migration), both among and within populations. We examined whether clonal segregation and specialization contributes to such behavioral variation within several lake populations of the cladoceran, Daphnia pulicaria. Electrophoretic and quantitative genetic analysis of clonal lines isolated from different depths at night revealed that clonal habitat specialization was common. Clones that utilized shallow water at night were genetically smaller at maturity and lower fecundity under standard laboratory conditions than the deep-water clones. The magnitude of this clonal habitat specialization varied among lakes: populations displaying broad use of depth habitats contained greater genetic variance than populations with more constrained habitat use. These results are consistent with known differences in selective factors in different depth habitats and suggest that substantial clonal specialization can occur within single populations. Since previous work has discovered a heritable basis to habitat selection in several Daphnia species, including D. pulicaria in our study lakes, it is likely that clonal/depth specialization is an important factor affecting the trophic ecology of Daphnia. Empirical models based on zooplankton biomass were used to predict mean summer chlorophyll a (Chl a) and to examine how zooplankton influenced the total phosphorus (TP) - Chl a relationship. Four years of data were analyzed for three lakes having similar TP concentrations but varied abundances of Daphnia and Ceriodaphnia. Mean TP did not correlate significantly with mean Chl a during the study period, although mean Daphnia density was a good predictor of Chl a concentration (p > 0.001). Both residuals from the TP - Chl a relationship (p > 0.001) and Secchi depth (p > 0.007) were negatively correlated with Daphnia abundance. Ceriodaphnia abundance was positively correlated with Chl a (p > 0.002) and Secchi depth (p > 0.001). Mean size of Daphnia during spring was the best predictor of the Daphnia-Ceriodaphnia shift in mid-summer. Early establishment of a large-sized Daphnia cohort may prevent their summer elimination by Chaoborus and intensify competition with Ceriodaphnia. These results imply an important link between Daphnia and Ceriodaphnia thereby limiting the utility of Chl a - TP model predictions in these small, urban lakes. This linkage and the differential effect of these two zooplankton species on planktonic algae deserve further consideration in similar lakes where phytoplankton and zooplankton tend to be tightly coupled.  相似文献

According to the size‐efficiency hypothesis (SEH) larger bodied cladocerans are better competitors for food than small bodied species. In environments with fish, however, the higher losses of the large bodied species due to size‐selective predation may shift the balance in favor of the small bodied species. Here we present a theoretical framework for the analysis of the competitive abilities of zooplankton species that takes both competition and predation into account in one coherent analysis. By applying the conceptually well‐understood framework of physiologically structured population models we were able to predict the relative difference in predation rates necessary to cause a shift in dominance of the large‐bodied species (Daphnia pulicaria) to the small‐bodied species (D. galeata). These predictions depend only on seven easily interpretable parameters per species: size at birth, size at maturity and maximum size, age at maturity, maximal clutch size, egg development time and finally the half‐saturation constant for food. The critical equilibrium mortality of D. pulicaria was 0.16 d?1 at food concentrations close to the critical food concentration of D. galeata, i.e. D. pulicaria will win the competition as long as its mortality rate is below 0.16 d?1. At higher food concentrations the differential mortality curve (plotting equilibrium mortalities of both species against each other) approached a linear function with a slope of one and an intercept equal to the difference in maximal population birth rates. The prediction of critical predation rates was independent of the ingestion rate of the cladocerans and the algal carrying capacity and food regeneration rate of the environment although the mechanism works through competition for a shared algal food resource. We interpret these findings in terms of the relative predation risk large and small‐bodied cladocerans will face in various freshwater ecosystems.  相似文献
