This study concerns dendrochronology and dendroclimatology of yew growing in Poland. The yew (Taxus baccata L.), a long-lived, slow-growing tree, is regarded as a species threatened with extinction. The eastern boundary of its range transects Poland. The analyses were performed on 34 yew populations which are protected as parts of nature reserves, as nature monuments, or which are planned to be protected. Samples were collected using Pressler borer from a total of 774 trees yielding 1307 profiles. Classical dating techniques (including cross-dating method) were subsequently used to reconstruct 34 local chronologies. Average tree-ring width was 0.84 mm and ranged from 0.27 to 1.47 mm. For most stands, the age of the yew trees is overestimated. The studied populations most frequently are 100–200 years old, and the oldest yew trees in Poland are growing in the KS population (age estimated at 500–600 years). Average tree-ring width was found to be strongly dependent on the chronology length/tree age. The 674 pointer years calculated for the local chronologies served as a basis for determining pointer years for the entire study area. Negative years include: 1862, 1865, 1917, 1927, 1940, 1947, 1956, 1963, 1969, 1976, 1979, 1993, 1996, and 2003. Positive years are: 1884, 1914, 1916, 1965, 1977, 1988, 1997, and 2007. Analysis of weather conditions in those years demonstrated a strong relationship between tree-ring width and air temperature in winter, pre-spring, and early spring. Higher-than-average temperatures during those seasons correlate positively with yew tree-ring width. Response function analysis performed for local and regional chronologies point to a dominant role of air temperature in December of the year preceding growth and in January, February, and March of the current year (linear relationships). June precipitation is an additional factor affecting tree-ring width in some areas of northern and northwestern Poland: the higher the precipitation, the wider the tree-rings. The results obtained, particularly those concerning growth-climate relationships and dendroclimatic regionalisation, can be used in the on-going programme of yew restitution in Poland.  相似文献

东北红豆杉是国家I级重点保护野生濒危植物,其径向生长与气候的关系对于探讨其种群濒危机制具有极其重要的意义。利用穆棱自然保护区内天然东北红豆杉树木年轮样本,建立了长300多年的树轮年表(1700—2005年)。分析径向生长特征发现东北红豆杉总体上呈波动式下降的生长方式,在1770年和1930年左右存在两个生长释放区,该地区调查的样本最大年龄达到370a左右。年表与气候变量之间相关分析表明,冬春季节最低气温、平均气温是树木生长的主要限制因子,其他气候因子也有一定的影响,但不起主要作用。1942年以后东北红豆杉年轮指数与Wilson重建的北半球气温变化吻合度降低,温度对东北红豆杉的径向生长限制性降低,这表明气候变暖可能有利于东北红豆杉的径向生长,但不足以说明气候变暖与东北红豆杉衰退的关系,其他气候因子的年轮气候响应分析也不能确定气候变化在东北红豆杉衰退中的主导作用。人为破坏可能是东北红豆杉衰退的主要因素,但气候变化在其中起到多大的贡献还有待深入研究。  相似文献

A significant difficulty in the accurate ageing of many of the largest-diameter yew trees (Taxus baccata L.) found in the United Kingdom is their vulnerability to heartwood decay. This has presented a considerable barrier to extending yew chronologies beyond c.330 years into the past. Decayed wood often survives within the sound cylindrical structure of hollow and hollowing yews. Here we present the analysis of such decayed yew wood using a novel wet-scanning technique. Long series for four out of five large hollow yew trees sampled are successfully cross-matched to produce a 374-year-long mean series spanning 1532–1905. These newly dated series extend the previous mean UK yew chronology by 158 years. Although currently undated, the central decayed material from the largest yew at Selborne produces a 196-year series which is likely to include material from the 14th century. Given the number of large hollow yew trees surviving in the UK, this research highlights the potential for using decayed yew wood to improve the ageing of yew trees and extending a regional yew chronology.  相似文献

One of the important issues in plant autecology is the analysis and understanding of species-environment relationships and response of species to ecological gradients. Understanding how species respond to environmental variables is useful for predicting the environmental and geographic distribution of species. The main objective of this research is to study the response curve of European yew to identify the most important climatic and physiographic gradient in the northern forests of Iran. In the present study the Huisman–Olff–Fresco function (HOF) was used to study the response curve of the European yew in relation to each of the environmental variables individually and extract the optimum values. In order to select the optimal model, the Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) was used. Based on the results of this study, 41% of the models have either monotonically increasing or decreasing behaviors (models 2 and 3), 27% of the models have a unimodal symmetric behavior and 32% of models have a skewed behavior. European yew in 59% of models has a unimodal response curve. Based on the variables used in the study, it can be said that the European yew is a species that prefers oceanic climates, midlands altitudes, and north-facing slopes for establishment in temperate forests of Iran. Together, these findings advance niche theory about the European yew tree and may be used for generating better predictive models of European yew distributions under future climate change.  相似文献

The Chinese yew (Taxus wallichiana var. mairei) is ranked in the first class of important wild endangered plants in China. Due to overexploitation, it now occurs scattered only in the forest undergrowth along the Yangtze River Valley. To improve the conservation management of the species, we applied structural indices to investigate the structural diversity of naturally regenerating yew populations that have established via ex situ conservation. The results show that most yews had larger non‐yew tree neighbors; these were 30–70% larger than their reference trees. Collectively, the average distances between the yews and the three nearest‐neighboring trees were short ( 3 m), suggesting that the yews face strong interspecific competition from neighbors. In these two forest stands, most of the pole‐sized yews were found beneath a single tall neighboring tree (height  10 m), and their growth was enhanced under a single neighboring tree but not under two, three or zero neighboring trees. Finally, we recommend simple silvicultural measures to reduce interspecific competition and improve the vitality of the yew population; specifically, the cutting or pruning of branches of large neighboring trees in tandem with the thinning of canopy trees growing next to the mother yews.  相似文献

Understanding the ecological mechanisms that allow a species to transition from an occasional understory component to the dominant type in the forest canopy is essential for predicting future shifts in the distribution of species. We investigated this issue with regard to yew, also because mature yew trees have been reported to inhibit self-regeneration and seedling survival, prompting concerns for the long-term preservation of the species. Our objectives were (a) to quantify spatial patterns of yew (Taxus baccata L.) populations near the southern limit of the species’ ecological distribution, (b) to determine the relationships between yew presence and topographic gradients, and (c) to answer the question of how yew regeneration is affected by such patterns and relationships. We analyzed three extensive yew populations (90–165 ha, including 3–12 thousand established individuals) that mostly occupy the understory of beech forests located in protected areas of the central Apennines (Italy). Overall, the realized niche of yew (either as established trees, saplings, or seedlings) followed the expected bell-shaped curve of a species response to an environmental gradient. Yew was mainly found at 1,000–1,600 m elevation on mesic exposures (north and west) and intermediate slopes (30–60%). Geostatistical analysis revealed that yew occurred in patches, as shown by variogram ranges of 40–110 m for yew tree basal area and regeneration abundance. Yew regeneration over the landscape was directly related to basal area of yew trees. At local scales (~10 m), presence of established trees favored regeneration in relatively less developed stands, whereas high density of mature yews suppressed regeneration. Healthy yew populations in beech forests had a minimum size of 0.5–3 ha. As yew density increased within these patches, regeneration dropped, so that yew conservation cannot be limited to presently occurring populations, despite the longevity and potential for vegetative reproduction of the species. Disturbance from grazing and wildfire was also found to impact yew survival. Long-term existence of yew in the Italian Apennines depends on maintaining and expanding old-growth beech forests that incorporate yew patches, and have a minimum continuous cover equivalent to a relatively undisturbed regime (10–50 ha).  相似文献

竞争是植物种内和种间关系的主要形式之一。通过对黑龙江穆棱东北红豆杉自然保护区的95株东北红豆杉对象木及980株竞争木的调查,运用Hegyi的单木竞争指数计算分析了东北红豆杉的种内和种间竞争强度。东北红豆杉的种内竞争强度不大,占总竞争的4%。竞争压力更多的来自于种间竞争,占总竞争的96%。与东北红豆杉竞争激烈的树种主要是冷杉、紫椴、色木槭和红松等地带性植被的优势种。随着东北红豆杉胸径的增大,所受到的竞争压力逐渐减小,胸径在20cm以前所受到的竞争压力最大,竞争强度与对象木胸径符合幂函数(CI=AD^-B)关系。  相似文献

The dendrochronological characteristics of 52 tree species from the semi-tropical forests of the Yucatán Peninsula were opportunistically explored in a salvage dendrochronological study. The existence of clear growth rings in these trees is a key prerequisite for further studies and a convincing demonstration of the dendrochronological potential of tropical tree species will allow the development of future research programs concerning the ecology of the species and inferences about past environmental changes detected from tree rings. Many aspects of the conservation and management of Yucatec forests should be urgently addressed to aid in the development of improved strategies beyond the scope of more traditional agricultural uses. Development of tree-ring analyses from selected local species can be of substantial assistance in these initiatives.  相似文献

Populations of rare tree species such as the dioecious and anemophilous yew (Taxus baccata) are especially prone to extinction if they occupy marginal habitats. This is the case of yew populations growing in Mediterranean mountains under dry climate and a severe anthropogenic disturbance regime, which show insufficient regeneration. We examined two of the likely mechanisms driving this population decline. The study was conducted in a central Spanish yew population in 2005 and 2006. On one hand, we tested for the effect of the amount of pollen received by female flowers by means of a pollen addition experiment. On the other hand, we tested for the effect of initial fruit set on abortion and mature fruit production. Finally, we evaluated the effect of the spatial arrangement of male and female yew trees on realized fecundity. The success of fertilization and fruiting in the experimental population was pollen-limited. Female trees aborted ca. 70% of the fruit set in both years and treatments. Fruit set was significantly influenced by the females' neighbourhood, with fecundity decreasing exponentially with distance to the nearest male in both years. Overall, our results indicate that factors associated with ecological marginality have a strong influence on yew performance.  相似文献

南方红豆杉(Taxus chinensis)在我国南方地区多分布在村落附近的斑块生境中,成熟后的种子直接落在母树下或被鸟类等动物搬运至其他斑块中。林下地面种子会被地面活动的动物搬运,继而影响种子命运及种群更新。于2016年、2017年南方红豆杉果期,在浙江天目山一个红豆杉种群分布地(临安市桐坑村),采用野外种子摆放实验的方法研究了动物对地面种子的搬运情况。结果表明:啮齿类动物取食是南方红豆杉地面种子消失的主要原因,但种子消失率在斑块间及边缘生境中的差异较大。母树林和竹林是啮齿类动物的主要觅食生境,两种生境的动物取食率明显高于山核桃种植园。边缘生境成为啮齿类斑块间移动的通道,而非觅食场所。4种啮齿类动物中,淡腹松鼠(Callosciurus pygerythrus)在母树林斑块以外的生境中出现频率最高,而其他地面搬运者回避利用山核桃种植园,仅在母树林和竹林斑块中搬运南方红豆杉地面种子。可见,斑块生境中动物改变了南方红豆杉地面种子的空间沉积格局,进而影响植物种群的更新。  相似文献

This study was designed to determine whether ectomycorrhizal mats (ECM) are more likely to be present in soils at the base of common understory trees than in soils distant from trees and to determine whether occurrence of ECM is related to tree size. Three understory trees were studied: Pacific yew (Taxus brevifolia Nutt.), western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla (Raf.)Sarg), and vine maple (Acer circinatum Pursh). The 12 sites studied represent a range of climatic conditions and management histories. More than 2,900 plots were surveyed over 18 months. The incidence of ECM was higher at the base of all three species than in control plots. Incidence of mats was also positively correlated with tree size. Himalayan yew (Taxus wallichiana) is in high demand due to the presence of taxol in its bark, needles, and seeds. This metabolite is used for the treatment of breast and ovarian cancer. In addition, Himalayan yew wood is used to prepare slabs (Tabai), coffins (Taabut), for graveyards. Due to illegal cutting of plant parts and other anthropogenic pressures, Himalayan yew is endangered, and threatened with extinction, in Himalaya. This species grows slowly and regenerates poorly, primarily due to low production and delayed germination (1.5–2 years) of its seeds. The study being reported here was conducted to assess the factors (natural and anthropogenic) threatening this species. Nine valleys (Miandam, Kalam, Shinko, Beha, Lalku, Shahgram, Bishigram, Gurnai, and Daral) in the Swat district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Pakistan, have stands of Himalayan yew that were selected for the study. Before the survey was conducted, five informal discussions were carried out to identify people to be interviewed. A survey was conducted with 225 key informants in these valleys concerning the threats associated with this species. Nineteen percent of the respondents felt that the main problem was lack of awareness, while 17% indicated over-harvesting (peeling bark, lopping branches, etc.), and 13% thought it was slow growth. Other reasons for Himalayan yew decline included various anthropogenic pressures, such as: overgrazing, 15%; agriculture, 11%; roof construction, 9%; fuelwood, 7%; decoration, 5%; medicinal use, 3%; and other, 1% (e.g., utility poles, as blades in water turbine because of its hard nature). The results of this study suggest that there is an immediate need to protect T. wallichiana by increasing awareness of its importance and the threats from over-grazing; cuttings (peeling bark, lopping branches, etc.); and other damaging, anthropogenic activities. Biotechnological tools, such as vegetative propagation and in-vitro regeneration, could be practiced in nurseries and laboratories to produce large numbers of healthy, juvenile plants. In addition to in-situ and ex-situ conservation and management, there is a need for local community involvement in the large-scale reforestation efforts.  相似文献

In spite of enormous diversity in tree species, dendrochronological records in the tropical Andes are very scarce. Therefore, it is necessary to increase the search for new tree species with high dendrochronological characteristics in the tropical Andes, including the humid Puna of Peru. We present the first tree-ring chronology from Polylepis rodolfo-vasquezii, a recently described tree species in the Central Andes of Peru between 4000 and 4400 m elevation. Fifty trees were sampled in the district of Comas, Peru. After establishing the anatomical characteristics that delimit the annual growth rings, we developed a ring-width chronology by applying conventional dendrochronological techniques. The chronology covers the period 1869–2015 (157 years) and is well replicated from 1920 to present (> 20 samples). The statistics used to evaluate the quality of the chronology indicate that the P. rodolfo-vasquezii has similar values of MS, RBAR and EPS to those shown by other Polylepis spp chronologies. To determine the main climatic factors controlling the growth of P. rodolfo-vasquezii, we compared our chronology with local and regional temperature and precipitation records. Growth season temperature (November to May) seems to be the main climatic factor modulating inter-annual variations in the growth of this species. The sensitivity to inter-annual temperature variations highlights the potential of P. rodolfo-vasquezii to provide climatically sensitive dendrochronological records in the Central Andes. To our knowledge, this is the first tree-ring record in South America displaying significant relationships with temperature over the tropical Atlantic Ocean.  相似文献

立地因子空间梯度特征是影响种间竞争的重要因素。通过研究主要竞争树种及竞争强度随海拔、坡向、坡位和坡度等立地因子变化的规律,揭示不同立地条件对天然东北红豆杉种间竞争的影响,为濒危东北红豆杉种群的保护与恢复提供理论指导。研究结果表明:东北红豆杉的种间竞争压力主要来自紫椴、臭冷杉、色木槭、红松、青楷槭、枫桦、花楷槭等7个树种,主要竞争树种以小径级个体居多。立地因子差异对种间竞争强度和主要竞争树种的排序有明显影响。东北红豆杉在阴坡受到的种间竞争压力是阳坡的3.27倍,主要树种的竞争强度显著高于阳坡,竞争树种的排序发生更迭;随着坡位的提升,东北红豆杉受到的种间竞争压力明显增加,主要竞争种类和强度也发生变化;坡度增加,种间竞争强度增加,主要竞争树种排序发生变化;海拔对种间竞争的影响总体不大,但影响主要竞争树种的竞争强度和排序。  相似文献

We isolated and characterized 11 microsatellite loci for the Chinese yew, Taxus chinensis var. mairei, an endangered tree species in China, by constructing a (CA)(12)-enriched library. The number of alleles per locus ranged from 5 to 10. The observed heterozygosities ranged from 0.2500 to 0.8333 and the expected heterozygosities ranged from 0.5196 to 0.8680. No significant linkage disequilibrium was detected at these loci. However, four loci significantly deviated from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. The null alleles were found to be present at locus Tach9 and locus Tach11 by the Micro-checker test (P < 0.001). These polymorphic loci could be employed in research of gene flow and spatial genetic patterns of T. chinensis var. mairei.  相似文献

Macaronesian laurel forests are the only remnants of a subtropical palaeoecosystem dominant during the Tertiary in Europe and northern Africa. These biodiverse ecosystems are restricted to cloudy and temperate insular environments in the North Atlantic Ocean. Due to their reduced distribution area, these forests are particularly vulnerable to anthropogenic disturbances and changes in climatic conditions. The assessment of laurel forest trees’ response to climate variation by dendrochronological methods is limited because it was assumed that the lack of marked seasonality would prevent the formation of distinct annual tree rings. The aims of this study were to identify the presence of annual growth rings and to assess the dendrochronological potential of the most representative tree species from laurel forests in Tenerife, Canary Islands. We sampled increment cores from 498 trees of 12 species in two well-preserved forests in Tenerife Island. We evaluated tree-ring boundary distinctness, dating potential, and sensitivity of tree-ring growth to climate and, particularly, to drought occurrence. Eight species showed clear tree-ring boundaries, but synchronic annual tree rings and robust tree-ring chronologies were only obtained for Laurus novocanariensis, Ilex perado subsp. platyphylla, Persea indica and Picconia excelsa, a third of the studied species. Tree-ring width depended on water balance and drought occurrence, showing sharp reductions in growth in the face of decreased water availability, a response that was consistent among species and sites. Inter-annual tree-ring width variation was directly dependent on rainfall input in the humid period, from previous October to current April. The four negative pointer years 1995, 1999, 2008 and 2012 corresponded to severe drought events in the study area. This study gives the first assessment of dendrochronological potential and tree-ring climate sensitivity of tree species from the Tenerife laurel forest, which opens new research avenues for dendroecological studies in Macaronesian laurel forests.  相似文献

Given the scarcity of instrumental climatic data in the South American tropics, it is valuable to explore the dendrochronological potential of the numerous tree species growing in the region. In this paper, we assessed for the first time the dendrochronological characteristics of Schinopsis brasiliensis, an arboreal species from the dry-tropical Cerrado and Chaco forests in Bolivia and adjacent countries. Similar to most woody species in the Cerrado and Chaco regions, growth rings of S. brasiliensis are delimited by the presence of thin but continuous lines of marginal parenchyma. Based on 22 samples from 15 trees, we present the first ring-width chronology for this species covering the period 1812–2011 (200 years). Additionally, a 106-year floating chronology from S. brasiliensis was developed using cores from four columns from the church of San Miguel, Santa Cruz, built in the period 1720–1740. Standard dendrochronological statistics indicate an important common signal in the radial growth of S. brasiliensis. The comparison of variations in regional climate and ring widths shows that tree growth is directly related to spring-summer rainfall and inversely related to temperature. Following the winter dry season, rainfall in late spring and early summer increases soil water supply, which activates tree growth. In contrast, above-average temperatures during the same period increase evapotranspiration, intensify the water deficit and reduce radial growth. The dependence of S. brasiliensis growth on water supply is evidence of its dendrochronological potential for reconstructing past precipitation variations in the extensive tropical Cerrado and Chaco forest formations in South America. Using wood from historical buildings opens the possibility of extending the chronologies of S. brasiliensis over the past 400–500 years.  相似文献
