Fusarium toxins are of great practical relevance in animal feeding since they may occur in toxicologically relevant concentrations. Therefore, many attempts have been made to search for detoxification of contaminated feedstuffs or diets in order to cope with the problem. The supplementation of contaminated diets with detoxifying agents seems to be most feasible, andin vitro results seem to be convincing. According to the Guideline 87/153/EEC, the efficacy has to be proven by using an experimental design justified according to the claim for the use of the additive. Reviewing the literature, only a few studies investigated specific parameters which may clearly reflect the claimed mode of action of the additives, and those demonstrated no measurable detoxifying effects. The majority of investigations focused on the rather non-specific performance parameters, while many of these applied incomplete experimental designs. Nevertheless, most of the experiments did not demonstrate preventative effects. It is concluded that testing of currently available detoxifying agents did not follow the Council Directive since the claim for their use was not proven. The application of complete two by two factorial experimental designs, the investigation of mycotoxins and/or metabolites in physiological samples as specific parameters and the verification of the specificity of the detoxifying agent is recommended for futurein vivo investigations.  相似文献

The depletion of B cells has proven to be beneficial in the treatment of autoimmune demyelinating disorders. The high efficacy of these therapies has highlighted the importance of B cells in autoimmunity and prompted investigations into specific B cell subsets that may be aberrant. Recently, a rise in the trialling of alternative B cell-targeting therapies that inhibit targets such as Bruton's tyrosine kinase, interleukin-6 receptor and fragment crystallisable neonatal receptor has also been observed. These agents interfere with specific dysregulated functions of B cells in contrast to the broad removal of many B cell subsets with depletion agents. The therapeutic benefit of these emerging agents will help delineate the contributions of B cells in demyelinating disorders and holds great potential for future treatment.  相似文献

Abstract

The spine or ‘back’ has many functions including supporting our body frame whilst facilitating movement, protecting the spinal cord and nerves and acting as a shock absorber. In certain instances, individuals may develop conditions that not only cause back pain but also may require additional support for the spine. Common movements such as twisting, standing and bending motions could exacerbate these conditions and intensify this pain. Back braces can be used in certain instances to constrain such motion as part of an individual’s therapy and have existed as both medical and retail products for a number of decades. Arguably, back brace designs have lacked the innovation expected in this time. Existing designs are often found to be heavy, overly rigid, indiscrete and largely uncomfortable. In order to facilitate the development of new designs of back braces capable of being optimised to constrain particular motions for specific therapies, a numerical and experimental design strategy has been devised, tested and proven for the first time. The strategy makes use of an experimental test rig in conjunction with finite element analysis simulations to investigate and quantify the effects of back braces on flexion, extension, lateral bending and torsional motions as experienced by the human trunk. This paper describes this strategy and demonstrates its effectiveness through the proposal and comparison of two novel back brace designs.  相似文献

Experiments were carried out to examine the effects of a Fusarium contaminated wheat (10mg deoxynivalenol and 0.76mg zearalenone, ZON, perkg dry matter) and of a detoxifying agent (Mycofix ®Plus, Biomin GmbH, Herzogenburg, Austria) on the growing performance of bulls, carry-over of ZON and its metabolites into body fluids and tissues, and on nutrient digestibility in wethers. The experiments were designed according to a complete two by two factorial approach which meant that both the uncontaminated control wheat and the Fusarium toxin contaminated wheat were tested both in the absence and presence of Mycofix ®Plus. The growing experiment with bulls (n = 14 per treatment) covered the live weight range between 244kg and 460kg. The respective wheat batches were included in the concentrate portion at 65%. Concentrates were fed according to plan whereas maize silage was offered for ad libitum consumption. Daily dry matter intake and live weight gain [kg per animal and day] were 7.40, 7.52, 7.51 and 7.49 and 1.367, 1.296, 1.380 and 1.307 for bulls fed the unsupplemented control wheat, the supplemented control wheat, the unsupplemented and Fusarium toxin contaminated wheat and the supplemented Fusarium toxin contaminated wheat, respectively. ZON and its metabolites were not detected in edible tissues. The most striking effects of feeding the Fusarium toxin contaminated wheat on carcass characteristics were a reduced dressing percentage, an increased weight of the emptied gastro-intestinal tract and a reduced weight of the testicles. No effect of the detoxifying agent was seen for these parameters whereas heart weight increased independently of Fusarium toxin contamination of the concentrates. Nutrient digestibility of the two wheat batches, unsupplemented or supplemented with Mycofix ®Plus was evaluated according to the difference method using wethers. Presence of Fusarium toxins in wheat did not influence its feeding value. The effects of the addition of the detoxifying agent were mycotoxin unspecific and resulted in an increase in apparent digestibility of crude protein and a decrease in crude fiber digestibility. It is concluded that feeding of Fusarium toxin contaminated wheat did not adversely affect performance of growing bulls (approximately 2.2mg DON and 0.1mg ZON perkg complete ration at a reference dry matter content of 88%) or nutrient digestibility in wethers. The effects of the detoxifying agent Mycofix ®Plus on growing performance and on nutrient digestibility were rather Fusarium toxin unspecific. The slightly negative effects on growing performance needs to be examined further.  相似文献

An experiment was carried out to examine the effects of aFusarium-contaminated wheat grain as a component of the concentrate portion (10 mg deoxynivalenol and 0.76 mg zearalenone, ZON, per kg dry matter) on performance of growing bulls, and on carry over of ZON into tissues and body fluids. In a second study, rumen physiological parameters were investigated in wethers equipped with rumen fistulae. Moreover, the influences of a detoxifying agent (Mycofix®, MP, Biomin GmbH, Herzogenburg, Austria) were considered as an additional experimental factor beside the contamination of the wheat (uncontaminated control wheat,Fusarium-toxincontaminated wheat).The fattening experiment with bulls (n=14 per treatment) covered the live weight range between 244 kg and 460 kg. Daily dry matter intake and live weight gain (kg per animal and day) were 7.40, 7.52, 7.51 and 7.49 and 1.367, 1.296, 1.380 and 1.307 for bulls fed the unsupplemented control wheat, the supplemented control wheat, the unsupplemented andFusarium toxin contaminated wheat and the supplementedFusarium toxin contaminated wheat, respectively. Concentration of ZON and its metabolites in edible tissues were lower than the detection limits of the applied HPLC-method.The results of the rumen physiological investigations revealed that the molar ratios of short chained volatile fatty acids and ammonia concentration in rumen fluid remained unchanged in response to dietary treatments whereas the addition of MP to the diets buffered the postprandial decrease in rumen pH.  相似文献

Optimal experimental designs were evaluated for the precise estimation of parameters of the Hill model. The optimally effective designs were obtained by using the criterion of D-optimization. For the Hill model, optimal designs replicate 3 sampling points. These points were shown to be quite sensitive to the behavior of the experimental error. Since an investigator is often uncertain about error conditions in biological studies, a practical approach would use the sampling scheme calculated for an intermediate error condition. Thus, if the behavior of error variances is not known, precise parameters of the Hill model are obtained by choosing concentrations which yield fractional responses (responses divided by their asymptotic, maximum value) of 0.086, 0.581 and 1.0. When experimental constraints limit the maximum attainable concentration and response, all design points are lowered. Appropriate designs can be constructed based on the design which is optimal when constraints result in a maximum attainable fractional response of 0.5. The optimal designs were found to be robust when the parameter values assumed by the investigator did not equal their true values. The estimating efficiencies obtained by using two frequently applied designs were assessed. Uniformly spaced concentrations yielded imprecise parameters. Six-point, geometrically spaced designs gave generally good results. However, their estimating efficiency was generally exceeded by the recommended sampling schemes even in the presence of uncertainty about error conditions. The aim of this trial was to assess the effects of the administration of different combinations of mycotoxins in naturally contaminated maize grains on dairy heifer growth, blood measurements and puberty onset. A total of 35 Friesian female heifers were randomly allotted to three experimental groups from 18–21 to 42–45 weeks of age. During the 24-week experimental period (EP), heifers were fed the same diet, but with maize meal derived from three differently contaminated lots: very low contamination, as control (C); medium–low aflatoxin-contaminated (A); and mixed aflatoxin–fumonisin contaminated (A-F). At the end of the EP, they returned to a common diet without contaminated maize, and they were monitored for an additional period of 12 weeks (post-experimental period, PEP). BW, wither height, hip height, body length and heart girth were measured every 4 weeks from the beginning of EP to the end of PEP. At the same time, body condition score was evaluated and blood samples were taken from the jugular vein to be analysed for haematological, serum protein and metabolic profiles. Age at puberty was assessed by measuring weekly plasma progesterone levels from 40 to 52 weeks of age. Body growth measurements were processed both by ANOVA of average daily gain of EP and PEP separately, and by the analysis of growth curve parameters. Haematological, serum protein and metabolic profile were evaluated using a mixed model, taking into account the repeated measurements in time on each animal. Heifers’ growth was delayed both in A and A-F groups during EP, as evidenced by the different linear coefficients of the BW growth curve in the three groups. Differently contaminated diets did not affect the haematological profile, so that it can be concluded that these levels of mycotoxin contamination do not determine any specific effect on haematopoiesis and immunity in growing heifers. The main blood marker of mycotoxin chronic toxicity was the γ-glutamyl transferase activity level in plasma, which appeared to be altered even after the removal of mycotoxins. During EP, plasma glucose was lower in the groups fed contaminated diet compared with C. The joint actions of an altered nutritional status and a long-lasting liver damage were probably the causes of the delay in puberty attainment in A and, particularly, in the A-F group. The results from this trial evidenced that a chronic aflatoxin–fumonisin contamination in diets of dairy heifers can determine an important delay in the reproductive career of these animals.  相似文献

In two broiler and two turkey trials the influence of Fusarium toxins in maize on growth and slaughter performance, on residues of toxins in carcass and litters and blood parameters were investigated. In one broiler and turkey trial with naturally contaminated maize the main contaminants were deoxynivalenol (DON), moniliformin (MON and beauvericin (BEA). In one further broiler and turkey trial with inoculated maize (Fusarium subglutinans) the main contaminants were MON and BEA. The level of contamination of mycotoxins in the diets was free, low, medium and high. For every broiler trial 180 and for the turkey trials 60 and 100 one day old chicken were used. The result of these investigations shows that broiler and turkeys are not very sensitive to Fusarium toxins. Growth and slaughter performance and also blood parameters were not negative influenced by higher mycotoxin dosages in the diets.  相似文献

The protein nutrition of dairy cows is of great importance because of its direct influence on milk production, reproductive efficiency, and feeding cost. Eight first-lactation Holstein cows were randomly assigned to two contemporary 4 × 4 Latin squares in a 2 × 2 factorial design to evaluate the effects of replacing soybean meal with yeast-derived microbial protein (YMP) as a protein source (0% or 1.5% of dry matter (DM)) and its combination with slow-release urea (SRU; 0% or 0.75% of DM) on DM intake and milk production and composition, as well as blood parameters and nitrogen balance. Each experimental period lasted 28 days, with 21 days of adaptation and 7 days of data collection. The diets were formulated to attend the nutritional recommendations of the National Research Council and consisted of 49% forage (47% corn silage and 2% Tifton hay) and 51% concentrate, with 16.8% CP and 1.6 Mcal net energy for lactation/kg DM. For diets without YMP, the inclusion of SRU decreased DM intake, milk production as well as N intake and balance, but did not affect efficiency of production, milk composition or most of blood parameters. On the contrary, for diets with YMP, DM intake and milk production were increased by inclusion of SRU, while minor effects were observed for milk efficiency and composition, blood parameters as well as N intake, excretion and balance. When diets with SRU were compared, the inclusion of YMP increased DM intake, 4% fat-corrected milk, and N intake and balance (P<0.05), with no differences in milk production (kg/day), milk energy, efficiency of milk production or most of the blood parameters. For diets without SRU, YMP inclusion decreased DM intake, milk production, milk energy, N intake, fecal N and N balance (P<0.05), with no effects on milk efficiency and composition, or most of blood parameters. In conclusion, the use of YMP, SRU or both as partial substitutes of soybean meal in the diet of lactating cows has no negative effects on productivity parameters.  相似文献

Iron storage disease (ISD) in lemurs has been reported since as early as the 1960s, and in the 1980s was demonstrated to be a consistent finding in postmortem investigations of captive lemurs. Since then this disease has consistently been diagnosed at the point of necropsy. In the current study we describe a preclinical screening procedure, as well as the quantified preventive effects of dietary intervention upon iron absorption. Twenty-three individual lemurs of four species were initially tested with the transferrin saturation test (%TS); 21 of these animals were on conventional zoo diets, and two were fed a specific diabetic diet. Initially, 20 of 21 lemurs on conventional zoo diets were demonstrated to have %TS levels above the normal range for humans; 17 of these lemurs were in the category (for humans) of excessive iron absorption. A dietary change aimed at reducing dietary iron and vitamin C levels and increasing the levels of iron-chelating tannins and/or phytates was instigated. After the animals were retested, a matched-pair comparison of %TS values before and after the diet change revealed significantly (P=0.038, n=7) lower %TS values after the diet change. All species averages were in the human hyperabsorption range on conventional zoo diets (n=21). No species averages were in that range after the dietary change (n=18). The results indicate that further investigations into the use of %TS testing in lemur husbandry, and specific preventive dietary measures, should be conducted.  相似文献

John Edsall's investigations of human erythrocyte carbonic anhydrase, a zinc metalloenzyme that powerfully catalyzes the reversible hydration of carbon dioxide, highlighted a conundrum regarding the correct hydration product. The measured kinetic parameters could not be reconciled with the choice of carbonic acid, since its bimolecular recombination rate with enzyme would exceed the diffusion limit. The alternate choice of bicarbonate obviated the recombination rate problem but required that the active site deprotonation exceed the diffusion-limited maximum rate by an even greater extent. This paradox was resolved in favor of bicarbonate when the unsuspected role of buffer species indirectly deprotonating the enzyme was finally proposed, spurring numerous investigations to verify the hypothesis. Edsall's laboratory also reported the accidental discovery of the first competitive inhibitor, imidazole. This opened new avenues to understanding the binding of the CO2 substrate and stimulated many investigations on this inhibitor. Paramagnetic NMR and crystallographic studies demonstrated that the only other known competitive inhibitor, phenol, apparently shared this unusual binding site. Despite enormous progress since Edsall's retirement, particularly the use of site-directed mutagenesis approaches, the precise interactions of carbon dioxide and bicarbonate with specific active site moieties remain as elusive today as when Edsall first considered these questions.  相似文献

An improved whole-cell technology for detoxifying organophosphate nerve agents was recently developed based on genetically engineered Escherichia coli with organophosphorus hydrolase anchored on the surface. This article reports the immobilization of these novel biocatalysts on nonwoven polypropylene fabric and their applications in detoxifying contaminated wastewaters. The best cell loading (256 mg cell dry weight/g of support or 50 mg cell dry weight/cm2 of support) and subsequent hydrolysis of organophosphate nerve agents were achieved by immobilizing nongrowing cells in a pH 8, 150 mM citrate-phosphate buffer supplemented with 1 mM Co2+ for 48 h via simple adsorption, followed by organophosphate hydrolysis in a pH 8, 50 mM citrate-phosphate buffer supplemented with 0.05 mM Co2+ and 20% methanol at 37 degrees C. In batch operations, the immobilized cells degraded 100% of 0.8 mM paraoxon, a model organophosphate nerve agent, in approximately 100 min, at a specific rate of 0.160 mM min-1 (g cell dry wt)-1. The immobilized cells retained almost 100% activity during the initial six repeated cycles and close to 90% activity even after 12 repeated cycles, extending over a period of 19 days without any nutrient supplementation. In addition to paraoxon, other commonly used organophosphates, such as diazinon, coumaphos, and methylparathion were hydrolyzed efficiently. The cell immobilization technology developed here paves the way for an efficient, simple, and cost-effective method for detoxification of organophosphate nerve agents.  相似文献

Antidepressants are a useful addition to a physician''s therapeutic armamentarium, but because they are used to treat disorders of diverse and largely unknown cause, there is a much greater element of chance associated with their use than with the use of many other types of drugs (e.g., antibiotics and analgesics). Nevertheless, empirically derived treatment schemes, applied systematically, increase the odds of a favourable response and are preferred to haphazard prescribing. To date, no one antidepressant has been shown to be more effective than any other, although the newer agents are alleged to be faster acting, more specific and less toxic than the established drugs. However, generally, such claims have not been proven clinically. Unless there are overwhelming contraindications (e.g., intolerable side effects, an idiosyncratic response or coexisting cardiac disease) the established agents, with their proven efficacy, are preferred initially.  相似文献

A complete 2 x 3 two factorial design was applied to investigate the effects of Fusarium-infected wheat (2.5 mg DON/kg, 0, 25 and 50% of the diets), feed processing (mash and pellets) and the interactions thereof on fattening pigs (96, n= 16/group). Feed-to-gain ratio was significantly increased by contaminated wheat (2.65; 2.62 and 2.73 kg/kg for diets containing 0, 25 and 50% Fusarium-infected wheat, respectively) while digestibility of nutrients and metabolizable energy were not affected by the wheat batch. The feed processing also resulted in significant differences in feed-to-gain ratio but was accompanied by significant effects on the digestibility of organic matter and crude fat and on the metabolizable energy. Clinical chemical parameters were not significantly altered by the inclusion of the infected wheat. The lymphocyte proliferation capacity was not significantly affected by any of the experimental factors. A contribution of the feed processing to the variation of the deoxynivalenol (DON) effect may not be deduced from the present results.  相似文献

A 20-day experiment was conducted to compare the accumulation, distribution, and toxicological effects of dietary As, as arsenate, in lake whitefish (LWF, Coregonusclupeaformis) and lake trout (LT, Salvelinus namaycush). Results of this experiment were used to design an experiment of longer duration in which one of the fish species was selected and exposed three times per week to lower dietary As doses. In the present study each treatment group was exposed to a combination of one of three doses of As (0, 100, or 1000 μg As/g) and one of two types of diet, no brine shrimp (NS) or with brine shrimp (WS) for a total of eight dosing events. Brine shrimp were added to determine whether their presence enhanced consumption of As-contaminated food. Modified feeding behavior occurred in both fish species fed As contaminated diets, with the exception of the 100 μg As/g NS food. Brine shrimp addition did not affect feed consumption of the As contaminated diets. Significant As accumulation occurred in stomach, pyloric caeca, intestine, liver, kidney, and gallbladder, but not in bile or muscle. As exposure did not have a significant effect on hepatic and renal metallothionein concentrations. Concentrations of lipid peroxides were only significantly elevated in the plasma of LT fed the 1000 μg As/g WS food. Liver somatic indices decreased significantly in both species, whereas hematological parameters were not affected in either species. Histological lesions occurred in gallbladder, liver, kidney, pyloric caeca and intestine from LWF. These lesions were not observed in LT; however, gallbladders were not examined in this species. Weight gain was lower in both species fed As contaminated diets, however, condition factors were not affected.  相似文献

The potential for Fusarium mycotoxins to modulate immunity was studied in chickens raised to 10 weeks of age using an enteric coccidial infection model. Experimental diets included: control, diets containing grains naturally contaminated with Fusarium mycotoxins, and diets containing contaminated grains + 0.2% polymeric glucomannan mycotoxin adsorbent (GMA). Contaminated diets contained up to 3.8 microg/g deoxynivalenol (DON), 0.3 microg/g 15-acetyl DON and 0.2 microg/g zearalenone. An optimized mixture (inducing lesions without mortality) of Eimeria acervulina, E. maxima and E. tenella was used to challenge birds at 8 weeks of age. Immune parameters were studied prior to challenge, at the end of the challenge period (7 days post-inoculation, PI), and at the end of the recovery period (14 days PI). Total serum immunoglobulin (Ig) A and IgG concentrations in challenged birds fed the contaminated diet were higher than controls at the end of the challenge period. Serum concentration of IgA, but not IgG, was significantly decreased at the end of the recovery period in birds fed the contaminated diet. The percentage of CD4+ and CD8+ cell populations in blood mononuclear cells decreased significantly at the end of the challenge period in birds fed the control or the contaminated diet compared to their percentages prior to challenge. The pre-challenge percentage of CD8+ population was restored at the end of the recovery period only in birds fed the control diet. Interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) gene expression in caecal tonsils was up-regulated in challenged birds fed the contaminated diet at the end of the challenge period. No significant effect of diet was observed on oocyst counts despite the changes in the studied immune parameters. It was concluded that Fusarium mycotoxins modulate the avian immune system. This modulation involves alteration of gene expression but apparently does not enhance susceptibility or resistance to a primary coccidial challenge.  相似文献

A dose response study was carried out with pigs in order to examine the effects of increasing dietary deoxynivalenol (DON)-concentrations on performance, clinical serum characteristics, nutrient digestibility and DON-metabolism. For this purpose, wheat contaminated naturally with Fusarium toxins was incorporated into pig diets at increasing proportions to give calculated dietary DON-concentrations of 0, 2.3 and 4.6 mg/kg during the starter period of phase 1 (14 d) of the experiment, and 0/0, 1.2/1.4, 2.3/3.7 mg/kg starter/grower diet during phase 3 (56 d) of the experiment. Each diet was tested on 16 pigs of both sexes with an initial average live weight of approximately 28 kg. A recovery phase (phase 2, 21 d) was intercalated between phase 1 and 3 of the growth experiment where all groups were fed with the uncontaminated control diet since some pigs exposed to the highest dietary DON-concentration during phase 1 nearly completely refused the offered feed. Affected pigs completely recovered during this phase. In phase 3, when diets with lower DON-concentrations were fed, no differences in performance could be detected. Serum clinical characteristics (enzymes indicating liver damage, total protein, immunoglobulins) did not respond to increasing DON-concentration in the diets. DON-concentration in serum increased in a dose-response-related manner as dietary DON-concentration increased. However, this parameter was not or only weakly correlated to any of the examined performance parameters or serum characteristics. Also, nutrient digestibility of the diets and N-retention were not affected by treatments with the exception of crude fat digestibility which was not consistently influenced. Concentration of DON and its metabolite de-epoxy-DON increased in urine with increasing dietary DON-concentration in a strongly linearly related fashion. The proportion of the excretion of de-epoxy-DON of the total urinary excretion of DON plus de-epoxy-DON rose linearly up to approximately 4%. Total recovery of DON plus de-epoxy-DON as percentage of DON-intake varied between 45 and 57% and was not influenced by dietary DON-concentration. Only a very small fraction of approximately 0.1% of ingested DON was recovered in faeces.  相似文献

Recent studies suggest that the use of vegetable oils at expense of fish oil in aquaculture feeds might have potential negative effects on fish redox homeostasis and adiposity. Resveratrol (RESV) is a lipid-soluble phytoalexin present in fruits and vegetables with proven in vivo antioxidant function in animals. The present study aims to assess the potential use of RESV in Atlantic salmon feeds. To this end, post-smolt salmons with an initial BW of 148±3 g were fed four experimental diets for 15 weeks. A diet low in fish oil served as a control and was supplemented with 0, 0.5, 1.5 and 2.5 g/kg of RESV, respectively. The effect of the experimental diets on animal performance, tissue fatty acid composition, and the expression of genes encoding proteins involved in antioxidant signalling, lipid peroxidation, and metabolism were studied. Resveratrol significantly reduced feed intake and final BW of the salmon. Feeding RESV did not affect the sum of saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids or total lipids in the fillet. While the content of total polyunsaturated fatty acids was not affected, the percentages of some fatty acids in the liver and fillet were changed by RESV. Furthermore, in liver, the relative expression of glutathione peroxidase 4b, nuclear factor-like 2, and arachidonate 5-lipoxygenase remained unchanged across treatment groups. In conclusion, the negative impact of dietary RESV on FI and hence reduction of the BW discourages its inclusion in low fish oil diets for Atlantic salmon.  相似文献

Bentonite and hydrated sodium calcium aluminsilicate (HSCAS) were added at a level of 0.5% (w/w) to the diets containing 2.5 mg aflatoxins (AF) per kg diet and fed to male mature rats for 15 successive days. Aflatoxin alone significantly decreased feed intake and altered serum biochemical parameters of liver and kidney functions. Aflatoxin caused chromosomal aberrations in bone marrow cells. Bentonite or HSCAS did not alter any of the parameters measured. The addition of bentonite or HSCAS to the AF-contaminated diet diminished most of the deleterious effects of the aflatoxin. Pathological examinations of liver and kidney proved that both bentonite and HSCAS were hepatonephroprotective agents against aflatoxicosis. The cytogenetic findings demonstrated that the addition of bentonite or HSCAS to AF-contaminated diet suppressed chromosomal aberrations. These findings indicated that bentonite and HSCAS could diminished many of the adverse effect of dietary AF in rats.  相似文献

Members of the genus Campylobacter are frequently responsible for human enteric disease with occasionally very serious outcomes. Much of this disease burden is thought to arise from consumption of contaminated poultry products. More than 80% of poultry in the UK harbour Campylobacter as a part of their intestinal flora. To address this unacceptably high prevalence, various interventions have been suggested and evaluated. Among these is the novel approach of using Campylobacter-specific bacteriophages, which are natural predators of the pathogen. To optimize their use as therapeutic agents, it is important to have a comprehensive understanding of the bacteriophages that infect Campylobacter, and how they can affect their host bacteria. This review will focus on many aspects of Campylobacter-specific bacteriophages including: their first isolation in the 1960s, their use in bacteriophage typing schemes, their isolation from the different biological sources and genomic characterization. As well as their use as therapeutic agents to reduce Campylobacter in poultry their future potential, including their use in bio-sanitization of food, will be explored. The evolutionary consequences of naturally occurring bacteriophage infection that have come to light through investigations of bacteriophages in the poultry ecosystem will also be discussed.  相似文献
