In this study, enzymatic hydrolysis of two floating aquatic plants which are suitable for water purification, water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) and water lettuce (Pistia stratiotes L.), was performed to produce sugars. Twenty chemical pretreatments were comparatively examined in order to improve the efficiency of enzymatic hydrolysis. As a result, the alkaline/oxidative (A/O) pretreatment, in which sodium hydroxide and hydrogen peroxide were used, was the most effective pretreatment in terms of improving enzymatic hydrolysis of the leaves of water hyacinth and water lettuce. The amount of reducing sugars in enzymatic hydrolysate of water lettuce leaves was 1.8 times higher than that of water hyacinth leaves, therefore water lettuce seems to be more attractive as a biomass resource than water hyacinth. Although roots of these plants contained large amounts of polysaccharides such as cellulose and hemicellulose, they generated less monosaccharides than from leaves, no matter which chemical pretreatment was tested.

Water hyacinth leaves in natural populations vary from being long and thin-petioled to being short with inflated petioles. A variety of factors has been used experimentally to alter water hyacinth leaf shape, but what controls the development of leaf morphology in the field has not been established. We measured photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) and spectral distribution of radiation in a natural water hyacinth population. PPFD in the center of the water hyacinth mat was reduced to 2.7% of full sunlight, and the red to far red (R:FR) ratio was reduced to 0.28. When shoot tips of plants were exposed to artificial light environments, only plants in the treatment with a R:FR ratio comparable to that in the natural population produced leaves with long, thin petioles. Shoot tips in full sun or covered with clear plastic bags or bags that reduced light quantity without greatly altering light quality produced shorter leaves with inflated petioles. We hypothesize that the altered light quality inside a mat is a major environmental control of water hyacinth leaf morphology.

Rates of abiotic and microbial decomposition in pre- and post-bloom leaves of water hyacinth are determined under laboratory conditions. Decomposition in all types of hyacinth leaves is dominated by physical leaching in an initial phase of 4 days duration, and later by microbial processes. The largest part of physical leaching takes place within the first 4 h. Thereafter, the weight loss due to physical leaching declines exponentially. The weight loss by microbial decomposition is minimal in the initial phase but increases exponentially in the later phase. Pre-bloom leaves decompose significantly faster than post-bloom leaves, and post-bloom green leaves decompose faster than post-bloom brown leaves. The rate constants of abiotic decomposition are significantly higher in post-bloom leaves as compared with pre-bloom leaves, while microbial decomposition is significantly higher in pre-bloom leaves. After 30 days, the dry mass loss by abiotic and microbial decomposition is 15% and 55%, respectively, in pre-bloom leaves, 33% and 19% in post-bloom green leaves, and 24% and 6% in post-bloom brown leaves.

In a study to isolate fungal pathogens with potential for the biocontrol of water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes), some lakes in the Lagos State and its environs, Nigeria, were surveyed for diseased water hyacinth (E. crassipes). The fungi present in the diseased tissue were isolated and identified as: Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus flavus, Penicillium sp., Curvularia pallescens, Fusarium solani and Myrothecium roridum. The pathogenicity of isolates of these fungi on fresh, non-diseased water hyacinth plants was investigated. Myrothecium was the only species capable of inducing disease symptoms. Necrosis was observed on water hyacinth leaves three days post inoculation (DPI) with M. roridum (1 × 106 spores/ml). The leaves and the petioles were withered at the end of day 24, and the disease incidence and disease severity were 100% and 8.67%, respectively. Molecular analysis of the internal transcribed spacer rDNA of the M. roridum isolate from water hyacinth showed >98% homology to authenticated sequences of M. roridum. The isolate, deposited at the International Mycological Institute, UK, as M. roridum Tode: Fries (IMI 394934), possesses the level of virulence needed in a potential mycoherbicide for use in the management of water hyacinth.

Fermentation modes and microorganisms related to two typical free-floating aquatic plants, water hyacinth and water lettuce, were investigated for their use in ethanol production. Except for arabinose, sugar contents in water lettuce resembled those in water hyacinth leaves. Water lettuce had slightly higher starch contents and lower contents of cellulose and hemicellulose. A traditional strain, Saccharomyces cerevisiae NBRC 2346, produced 14.4 and 14.9 g l(-1) ethanol, respectively, from water hyacinth and water lettuce. Moreover, a recombinant strain, Escherichia coli KO11, produced 16.9 and 16.2 g l(-1) ethanol in the simultaneous saccharification and fermentation mode (SSF), which was more effective than the separated hydrolysis and fermentation mode (SHF). The ethanol yield per unit biomass was comparable to those reported for other agricultural biomasses: 0.14-0.17 g g-dry(-1) for water hyacinth and 0.15-0.16 g g-dry(-1) for water lettuce.

Rates of weight loss and release of nutrients during different phases of decomposition in young water hyacinth leaves were determined under laboratory conditions. The leaves decomposed solely by physical leaching during the initial 4-day phase and later by microbial processes. The largest part of weight loss and nutrient release by physical leaching took place within the first 4 h of incubation and thereafter the decomposition rate declined. Microbial processes decayed leaves at a significantly higher rate than that by physical leaching. The overall decay rate constants were related inversely and the release of nutrients directly to the levels of leaf additions in the lake water. The dissolved inorganic and organic nutrients were released chiefly by abiotic processes during the initial as well as later phases of decay. The release was significantly higher during the initial phase in comparison with that during the later phase. Microbes utilized only a small amount of nutrients that were released during decomposition of water hyacinth leaves. The % release of various elements from the decaying leaves was in the order of K > P > C > Na > N.

Water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms) and salvinia (Salvinia auriculata Aubl.) were exposed to toxic levels of Cd with the objective of evaluating its effect on sulphate uptake and metabolism. Plants were treated with 0 and 5 μmol L−1 Cd for 3 days and, then sulphate uptake, ATP sulfurylase activity, soluble thiol content and Cd-binding complexes were determined. Water hyacinth showed a lower sulphate uptake, but its kinetic parameters were not affected by Cd. In salvinia, however, both Vmax and affinity to sulphate (1/Km) decreased with Cd treatment. The ATP sulfurylase activity increased in Cd-treated plant of both species, except in the roots of salvinia. In the presence of Cd water hyacinth always exhibited higher activity of this enzyme. The total soluble thiol content was always higher in water hyacinth. In Cd treated plants it increased in the leaves of water hyacinth, but decreased in salvinia. Cysteine content increased only in water hyacinth leaves, while γ-glutamylcysteine content increased in the two parts of the plants of both species after Cd treatment, especially in water hyacinth. Glutathione contents, on the contrary, after Cd treatment, reduced in both parts of the plants of water hyacinth but only in the leaves of salvinia. The unidentified thiol fraction content increased with Cd treatment in both species, especially in water hyacinth. Root and leaf extracts of both species showed peaks with maxima at A265/A280. In treated plants these peaks coincided with Cd content peaks indicating the formation of Cd-binding peptides. It was estimated that in the presence of Cd about 97% of Cd was associated with these complexes and water hyacinth had 28% more Cd-binding peptides than salvinia. Despite its lower sulphate uptake, water hyacinth showed higher rates of sulfur reduction and assimilation into soluble thiols. Possibly, glutathione is used in water hyacinth roots to synthesize hitherto unidentified Cd-binding peptides.

The responses of decomposition to N and P supply were investigated in three leaf types of water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms): dead green leaves collected from Donghu Lake; green, and brown leaves collected from outdoor tanks. The ratios of C:N, C:P, lignin:N and lignin:P were lowest in the green leaves collected from Donghu Lake, and highest in the brown leaves collected from outdoor tanks. Decomposition constant (k) of water hyacinth varied greatly, ranged from 0.006 to 0.099 d–1. Leaf litters decayed most quickly within the initial two weeks during the experimental period, but decomposition rate decreased significantly in the following days. Decomposition and nutrient (N and P) release were fastest in the green leaves collected from Donghu Lake, intermediate in the green leaves collected from outdoor tanks, slowest in the brown leaves collected from outdoor tanks. Statistical analyses revealed that the effects of P-availability on decomposition rate and N, P release rate of the three litter types were significant, whereas the impacts of N-availability was insignificant (p > 0.05) except for the brown leaves collected from outdoor tanks. These results suggest that decomposition rate and nutrient content dynamics of water hyacinth differ with their growth habitats, and could partly be regulated by nutrient availability, especially by P-availability, in the environments.

Taosa longula Remes Lenicov (Hemiptera: Dictyopharidae) is a planthopper from the South American tropics that feeds on water hyacinth, Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms-Laubach (Pontederiaceae). The biology of T. longula was studied in the laboratory and field to evaluate it as a potential biological control agent for this widespread aquatic weed. The developmental time of nymphs was recorded at different temperatures (15, 19, 23, 25, 27 and 30 °C), and developmental threshold temperatures were obtained for the different instars. The host range was evaluated in terms of development and feeding preference. Development from instar I to adult was recorded in two no-choice trials, one with cut leaves of Pontederiaceae, and a second with growing whole plants. In the cut-leaf tests, adults were obtained from Pontederia cordata var. cordata, P. rotundifolia and water hyacinth. In the whole plant test, T. longula adults were obtained only from water hyacinth. Feeding preference was evaluated by means of a paired-choice test with 10 T. longula first instars on whole plants of P. c. cordata, P. rotundifolia and water hyacinth. The number of insects that fed on water hyacinth was significantly higher than on P. c. cordata and P. rotundifolia. Taosa longula showed a clear preference for water hyacinth and exhibited warm climate requirements, making it an attractive candidate for water hyacinth biological control in tropical and subtropical areas.

The influence of process variables in batch adsorption has been used to assess the removal of methylene blue dye from aqueous solution using pure and carbonized biomasses of water hyacinth and water spinach. Dried leaves of the water weeds were carbonized at temperature up to 750°C. The optimum removal of dye was achieved at pH 10, 30°C, and 55 min at a dye concentration of 10 mg/L. In an attempt to describe the adsorption process, the equilibrium isotherm for each adsorbent was determined using Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm models. Maximum adsorption capacities based on the Langmuir model for pure and carbonized water hyacinth were (mg/g) 7.05 and 2.07, respectively, whereas those of pure and carbonized water spinach were 1.25 and 5.32, respectively. It was observed that the equilibrium data were well fit by both the Freundlich and Langmuir isotherms as R 2 > .97. This study demonstrates that the two waterweeds are effective, environmentally friendly, and inexpensive biomaterials for the removal of color from industrial effluents.

The influence of exogenous spermidine (Spd) on arginine decarboxylase (ADC), ornithine decarboxylase (ODC), polyamine oxidase (PAO) activities and polyamines (PAs), proline contents in water hyacinth leaves under Mercury (Hg) stress was investigated after 6 days treatment. The results showed that free putrescine (Put) content increased, the contents of free spermidine (Spd) and spermine (Spm) and the (Spd + Spm)/Put ratio in water hyacinth leaves decreased significantly with the increase of the Hg concentrations. Hg stress also disturbed the activities of ADC, ODC and PAO and caused changes on proline content. Compared to the Hg-treatment only, exogenous Spd (0.1 mM) significantly reduced the accumulation of free Put, increased the contents of free Spd and Spm and the ratio of (Spd + Spm)/Put in water hyacinth leaves. Furthermore, exogenous Spd enhanced the activities of ADC, ODC and PAO and significantly increased proline content. The PS-conjugated PAs and PIS-bound PAs changed in the same trend as free PAs. These results suggest that exogenous Spd can alleviate the metabolic disturbance of polyamines caused by Hg in water hyacinth leaves.

The fungus Alternaria eichhorniae isolate 5 (Ae5) is being developed as an effective mycoherbicide against water hyacinth in Egypt. To improve its pathogenicity, integration with 3,4-methylenedioxy trans-cinnamic acid (MDCA), a phenylpropanoid pathway inhibitor that weakens the plant's defense system, was explored. The severity of the disease induced by Ae5 increased when applied to water hyacinth plants pretreated with MDCA. Infection with Ae5 amplified the total phenol concentration in diseased water hyacinth leaves, whereas MDCA reduced it. Plants treated with both Ae5 and MDCA contained a comparable level of total phenols to that in the untreated control plants. Phenol-storing cells were located at three sites in the leaf, within the adaxial palisade tissue, above the abaxial epidermis and in the vicinity of the vascular bundles. Dimensions of these three cell types were increased by infection with Ae5, decreased by MDCA treatment and, in the combined treatment, were similar to those in control leaves. Increased numbers of phenol-storing cells were found only in the region near vascular bundles of plants treated with either Ae5 or MDCA.

We assessed the effect of two biological control agents, the mirid Eccritotarsus catarinensis (Carvalho) and the weevil Neochetina eichhorniae (Warner), singly or in combination, on the competitive ability of their host plant, water hyacinth, Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms-Laub., grown in a screen house, in competition with another aquatic plant (Pistia stratiotes L.). Water hyacinth plant growth characteristics measured included fresh weight, leaf and petiole lengths, number of inflorescences produced, and new shoots. Without herbivory, water hyacinth was 18 times more competitive than water lettuce (across all experimental combinations of initial plant densities), as estimated from fresh weights. Both insect species, singly or in combination, reduced water hyacinth plant growth characteristics. E. catarinensis alone was less damaging than the weevil and under normal conditions, i.e., floating water hyacinth, is not expected to increase control of water hyacinth beyond that of the weevil. When combined with the weevil, half the inoculum of weevils and half the inoculum of mirids produced the same growth reduction as the full inoculum of the weevil. Under conditions where the weevils are not effective because water hyacinths are seasonally rooted in mud, the mirid, which lives entirely on leaves, should become a useful additional biological control agent. 1. Water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) is one of the world’s most invasive aquatic plants and is known to cause significant ecological and socio‐economic effects. 2. Water hyacinth can alter water clarity and decrease phytoplankton production, dissolved oxygen, nitrogen, phosphorous, heavy metals and concentrations of other contaminants. 3. The effects of water hyacinth on ecological communities appear to be largely nonlinear. Abundance and diversity of aquatic invertebrates generally increase in response to increased habitat heterogeneity and structural complexity provided by water hyacinth but decrease due to decreased phytoplankton (food) availability. 4. Effects of water hyacinth on fish are largely dependent on original community composition and food‐web structure. A more diverse and abundant epiphytic invertebrate community may increase fish abundance and diversity, but a decrease in phytoplankton may decrease dissolved oxygen concentrations and planktivorous fish abundance, subsequently affecting higher trophic levels. 5. Little is known about the effects of water hyacinth on waterbird communities; however, increases in macroinvertebrate and fish abundance and diversity suggest a potentially positive interaction with waterbirds when water hyacinth is at moderate density. 6. The socio‐economic effects of water hyacinth are dependent on the extent of the invasion, the uses of the impacted waterbody, control methods and the response to control efforts. Ecosystem‐level research programmes that simultaneously monitor the effects of water hyacinth on multiple trophic‐levels are needed to further our understanding of invasive species.

Phytoremediation has the potential for implementation at mercury- (Hg) and methylHg (MeHg)-contaminated sites. Water hyacinths (Eichhornia crassipes) were investigated for their ability to assimilate Hg and MeHg into plant biomass, in both aquatic and sediment-associated forms, over a 68-day hydroponic study. The suitability of E. crassipes to assimilate both Hg and MeHg was evaluated under differing phosphate (PO4) concentrations, light intensities, and sediment:aqueous phase contamination ratios. Because aquatic rhizospheres have the ability to enhance MeHg formation, the level of MeHg in water, sediment, and water hyacinth was also measured. Hg and MeHg were found to concentrate preferentially in the roots of E. crassipes with little translocation to the shoots or leaves of the plant, a result consistent with studies from similar macrophytes. Sediments were found to be the major sink for Hg as they were able to sequester Hg, making it non-bioavailable for water hyacinth uptake. An optimum PO4 concentration was observed for Hg and MeHg uptake. Increasing light intensity served to enhance the translocation of both Hg and MeHg from roots to shoots. Assimilation of Hg and MeHg into the biomass of water hyacinths represents a potential means for sustainable remediation of contaminated waters and sediments under the appropriate conditions.

The potential use of water hyacinth as a pulp material for producing greaseproof paper was investigated. The proximate chemical analyses of the raw materials, the morphology of the water hyacinth stalk and fibre, pulp characteristics, and data on the physical properties of the paper hand-sheets formed from water hyacinth and bamboo pulps and their blends are presented. A comparative study of the pulp freeness (°SR) and drainage properties of water hyacinth and bamboo pulps showed that with a high freeness value of the pulps the drainage time increased. Blending of water hyacinth and bamboo pulps increased the physical strength. Paper hand-sheets made with a blend of water hyacinth pulp (75°SR) and bamboo pulp (80°SR), at 75:25 proportion, gave a tear index of 4·90 mN m2 g−1, tensile index of 51·10 N mg−1 and burst index of 7·25 kPa m2 g−1. These were higher than the values obtained from sheets made with pulp blends (water hyacinth:bamboo) of 80:20 or 90:10. The pulp sheets at a blend proportion of 75:25 also gave satisfactory greaseproof properties.

Incursion of water hyacinth, Eichhornia crassipes, has been a potential threat to Lake Tana and its ecosystem services. Its expansion is currently managed by abstraction (removing by hand); nonetheless, the disposal of mats and formation of pools are remaining problematic. This study aimed to assess the potential effects of water hyacinth and its management on water quality and human health. Biotic and abiotic data were collected on open water, water hyacinth covered and water hyacinth cleared out habitats. A total of 3673 invertebrates belonging to twenty-one families were collected from 45 sites. Culicidae was the most abundant family accounting (37.2%), followed by Unionoidae (19.4%) and Sphaeriidae (8.1%). Abundance of anopheline and culicine larvae were significantly higher in water hyacinth cleared out habitats (p?<?0.05). Water conductivity and total dissolved solids were significantly higher in habitats covered with water hyacinth (p?<?0.05). In conclusion, water hyacinth infestation had a negative impact on water quality and biotic communities. The physical abstraction of water hyacinth provided a very good habitat for the proliferation of mosquito larvae. Therefore, integrating water hyacinth management practices along with mosquito larvae control strategy could help to abate the potential risk of malaria outbreak in the region. In addition, developing watershed scale nutrient management systems could have a vital contribution for managing water hyacinth invasion in the study area.

The water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms.) plants in lakes and reservoirs have gained considerable attention in tropical and sub-tropical parts of the world due to its rapid growth. The amount of nutrients released from the dead plant materials is of particular interest. Thus, decomposition of water hyacinth plant parts under aerobic conditions was studied in the laboratory. Roots, petioles, and leaves of water hyacinth were enclosed separately in one litre polypropylene bottles which contained 500 ml of lake water. To study the influence of bacteria on the decomposition, antibiotics were added to half of the bottles. We observed that decomposition of leaves and petioles without antibiotics were relatively rapid through day 61, with almost 92.7 and 97.3% of the dry mass removed, respectively. Weight loss due to bacterial activities during 94 days decomposition was 22.6, 3.9, and 30.5% from leaf, petiole, and root litter. Decomposition of litter in lake water indicated that after 94 days 0.6, 0, and 0.6 g m–2 of leaf, petiole, and root N was dissolved in leachate, while 23.1, 14.4, and 6.0 g m–2 of leaf, petiole, and root N was either volatilized or remained as particulate organic N. Moreover, 0.2, 0, and 0.1 g m–2 of leaf, petiole, and root P remained dissolved in the leachate, while 3.1, 3.4, and 1.1 g m–2 of leaf, petiole, and root P was either precipitated or remained as particulate organic P. The carbon dynamics during the decomposition indicated that 7.4, 28.8, and 3.7 g m–2 of leaf, petiole, and root C remained dissolved in the leachate after 94 days while 228.0, 197.6, and 107.4 g m–2 of leaf, petiole, and root C was either diffused or remained as particulate organic C. These findings are useful for quantifying the nutrient cycles of very shallow lakes with water hyacinth under aerobic water environment. Further examination of the fate of the plant litter as it moves down in deep anaerobic water environment, is necessary to understand the leaching process better.
