Although the overall pattern and timing of gonadal sex differentiation have been established in a considerable number of teleosts, the ultrastructure of early stages of gonadal development is not well documented. In this study, gonads from larval and juvenile stages of laboratory-reared Cichlasoma dimerus were examined at the light-microscopic and ultrastructural levels. This freshwater species adapts easily to captivity and spawns with high frequency during 8 months of the year, providing an appropriate model for developmental studies. Larvae and juveniles were kept at a water temperature of 26.5 +/- 1 degrees C and a 12:12 hour photoperiod. Gonadal development was documented from 14-100 days postfertilization, covering the period of histologically discernible sex differentiation. Gonadal tissue was processed according to standard techniques for light and electron microscopy. C. dimerus, a perciform teleost, is classified as a differentiated gonochorist, in which an indifferent gonad develops directly into a testis or ovary. On day 14, the gonadal primordium consists of a few germ cells surrounded by enveloping somatic cells. Ovarian differentiation precedes testicular differentiation, as usual in teleost fishes. The earliest signs of differentiation, detected from day 42 onward, include the onset of meiotic activity in newly formed oocytes, which is soon accompanied by increased oogonial mitotic proliferation and the somatic reorganization of the presumptive ovary. The ovarian cavity is completely formed by day 65. Numerous follicles containing perinucleolar oocytes are observed by day 100. In contrast, signs of morphological differentiation in the presumptive testis are not observed until day 72. By day 100, the unrestricted lobular organization of the testis is evident. The latest stage of spermatogenesis observed by this time of testicular development is spermatocyte II.  相似文献

We detected a close morphological association between melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH)-immunoreactive (ir) fibers and somatolactin (SL)-ir cells in the pars intermedia of the cichlid fish Cichlasoma dimerus by double-label immunofluorescence. Male pituitaries obtained from adult C. dimerus were incubated with 0.1-10 muM salmon MCH, and the amount of SL released into the culture medium was semi-quantified by Western blot. This assay showed an increase of SL release in a dose-dependent manner (linear regression: P < 0.05). A close association of GnRH-ir fibers with SL-ir cells was also detected at the pars intermedia level. Male pituitaries were also incubated with 0.1-10 muM of mammalian GnRH, and SL release was semi-quantified by Western blot, showing an increase of released SL levels in a dose-dependent manner (linear regression: P < 0.05). In contrast, SL release was unaffected from female pituitaries incubated with salmon MCH; however, an increasing tendency was observed when mammalian GnRH was used. Hypothalamic close association of MCH-ir perikarya and GnRH-ir fibers was found by double-label immunofluorescence indicating a possible relationship between them. These results suggest that SL, like other pituitary hormones, is under hypothalamic control and is involved in diverse physiological processes including background adaptation and reproduction. This study has also shown that the in vitro culture of a single C. dimerus pituitary is a feasible method for studying the control of SL release and other pituitary hormones.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to obtain a basic knowledge of the hematology of Cichlasoma dimerus. The morphological features of blood cells were described according to the observations made by light and electron microscopy. Erythrocytes, thrombocytes and four types of leucocytes: lymphocytes, monocytes, heterophils and eosinophils, were distinguished and characterized. Thrombocytes are the most abundant blood cells after erythrocytes and are recognized easily from lymphocytes by morphological features and size. Heterophils and eosinophils are PAS positive. Hematological indices (RBC, WBC, PCV, Hb, MCV, MCH, MCHC and leucocyte differential count) were measured in one blood sample from 30 adult fish captured in Esteros del Riachuelo, Corrientes, Argentina (27 degrees 25'S, 58 degrees 15'W). The reference interval and the mean were determined for each hematological parameter evaluated. Contrary to other species, the percent of heterophils was found to be high in relation to the percent of lymphocytes. Low lymphocyte counts occurred in C. dimerus, as compared to these found in other fishes. Compared to most teleosts, this species has similar mean values for PCV and Hb and slightly higher for RBC. Statistical analysis revealed that differences in hematological parameters between male and female fish were not significant.  相似文献

Summary We describe the histological basis of color metamorphosis in the polychromatic Midas cichlid, Cichlasoma citrinellum. Eight percent of the individuals in a natural population transform from gray with black markings to orange, simultaneously losing their ability to adjust coloration in response to background and social context. This trait is inherited. Light- and electron microscopy revealed that this transformation is a two-step process. First, the melanophores die, then macrophage-like cells remove the debris. As a result of this initial process, the underlying xanthophores become visible, producing the orange coloration. A similar process may occur in individuals that further transform to white, or go directly from gray to white.

In order to build a reference system to assess results of ongoing in vitro experiments on the study of epithelial-mesenchymal interactions during odontogenesis in actinopterygians, we have chosen to study the first-generation teeth of the cichlid Hemichromis bimaculatus from initiation until attachment both at the light and transmission electron microscopical level. Although their development follows the general pattern of teleost tooth formation, first-generation teeth show peculiarities compared with later tooth generations, including their size, bare emergence from the epithelium, absence of dentinal tubules and of nerves and capillaries in the pulp cavity, and organization of the outer dental epithelium. Four developmental stages (a to d) prior to attachment (stage e) have been distinguished. The oral epithelium invaginates into the underlying mesenchyme (stage a) and is later folded to form a bell-shaped dental organ (stage b) without any primordial thickening, or any other morphological indication of imminent invagination. Then, the collagenous enameloid matrix is laid down, most probably by the odontoblasts (early stage c), soon followed by predentine deposition and the beginning of enameloid mineralization (late stage c). With ongoing dentinogenesis, the enameloid matrix matures (stage d), i.e. the organic constituents are removed and the matrix further mineralizes. Finally (stage e), an annular collar of attachment bone is deposited to fix the tooth onto the underlying bone.  相似文献

Formation of the germinal epithelium and folliculogenesis during ovarian development in Cichlasoma dimerus were described at the light‐ and electron‐microscopic levels. Prior to gonadal differentiation, germ cells and enveloping support cells reside within an inpocketing of the coelomic epithelium. Separation of the germinal and interstitial compartments of the gonad by a basement membrane is apparent from early gonadal development. Upon ovarian differentiation, oogonia undergo cyst‐forming divisions leading to the formation of clusters of interconnected cystocytes that synchronously enter meiosis, becoming oocytes. At the pachytene step, each oocyte becomes individualized by cytoplasmic extensions of prefollicle cells, thereby developing as an ovarian follicle. Subsequent somatic reorganization leads to the formation of the ovarian lumen in a cephalo‐caudal gradient. As a result, the germinal epithelium becomes internalized and lines the ovarian lumen. As defined by its origin from the germinal epithelium, the ovarian follicle is composed of an oocyte and the surrounding follicle cells. Thecal cells derived from the stroma encompass the basement membrane outside the follicle, thus forming a follicle complex. A common basement membrane is shared by the germinal epithelium and the follicle complex along a small portion of its surface. This point of attachment represents the site at which the oocyte would be released to the ovarian lumen during ovulation.  相似文献

The embryonic and larval development of Thai pangas was investigated during peak (May-July 1995) and late spawning (August-October 1995) periods. The fertilized eggs are adhesive and spherical with a yellowish or greenish-brown egg capsule. The yolk sac is yellowish-brown in color and 1.20-1.80 mm in diameter. Nine hours post-fertilization, the first cleavage stage, embryonic shield, head, tail region, neural grooves and somites were evident. The incubation period ranges from 24-36 h at a temperature of 20-30 degrees C. The newly hatched larvae are quite transparent and light yellowish in color with a body length of 2.98-3.10 mm. Eye pigments appear and the heart starts to work within 12-14 h of hatching. In 1-day-old pro-larvae, the mouth becomes well developed; barbules are elongated, prominent and look like tiny threads. The yolk sac is fairly well absorbed and the palatine teeth are fully developed during the 3 day pro-larval stage. At the end of 12 days of larval development, the stomach becomes functional and aerial respiration starts. After 2 weeks, the young fry is well-developed, and is of an adult appearance, that is, measuring up to 13.56 mm in length.  相似文献

Synopsis The patterns of mate size and parental care of a monogamous cichlid fish,Cichlasoma maculicauda, were studied in Gatun Lake, Panama. Males defend territories which serve as courtship and nest sites. Within a population most mates in pairs are of equal size rank. In each pair the male is larger than the female, probably because most mature males are larger than most mature females. Clutch size increases with female body size. Male size affects breeding success in two ways. First, larger males provide nest sites less susceptible to destructive wave action. Second, young of larger males grow faster than young of smaller males. Large males defeat small males in contests for position in feeding areas, and this may provide their young with better feeding conditions. In the laboratory young growth rates increase with food abundance, and at high levels of food surpass those observed in nature. Fast growth of young reduces their vulnerability to predators and should allow parents to breed more often. Young survival rates improve with the size of the parents, so that larger fish raise more offspring at each breeding attempt. These observations suggest why preference for large mates should occur.  相似文献

The harpacticoid copepodTisbe holothuriae has been cultivated in the Helgoland laboratory for more than 20 years. The effects of density on the larval development and the female productivity were studied by comparing two culture systems: (1) enclosed system, and (2) running-water system. In both systems, a nutritious mixed diet ofDunaliella tertiolecta, Skeletonema costatum, and granulatedMytilus edulis was offered. Larval mortality, larval development and female productivity are found to be significantly dependent on both the population density and specificity of the culture system. Increasing density causes higher larval mortality, longer larval development time, and a reduction in female productivity. In comparison with the enclosed system, the running-water system shows decisive advantages: larval mortality is about 20% lower, the rate of larval development is about two days shorter, and there is a very high rate of nauplii production. The sex ratio exhibits high variations, but in general, there is no clear relationship between sex ratio and population density. Nevertheless, when reared in the running-water system, a relatively high percentage of females (>45%) was found at lower densities.  相似文献

The complete larval development of the shallow-water Caribbean porcellanid crab, Petrolisthes politus (Gray, 1831), is described and illustrated from specimens reared in the laboratory. Petrolisthes politus hatches as a prezoea, which persist for less than 90 minutes, and then molts through two subsequent zoeal stages, which are completed in 6 to 7 and 14 to 16 days, respectively, before the megalopal stage is reached. From a total of about 2000 zoeae that were cultured, only two reached the megalopal stage. The two megalopae survived for up to 5 days but did not molt to the first crab stage. The zoeae of P. politus are compared with those of Petrolisthes rufescens (Heller, 1861), Petrolisthes lamarckii (Leach, 1820), Petrolisthes carinipes (Heller, 1861), Petrolisthes coccineus (Owen 1839) and Petrolisthes pubescens (Stimpson, 1858), which were hitherto the only species having bifid lateral spines on the telson of the first zoeal stage.  相似文献

Sire, J.‐Y. and Arnulf, I. 2000. Structure and development of the ctenial spines on the scales of a teleost fish, the cichlid Cichlasoma nigrofasciatum. — Acta Zoologica (Stockholm) 81 : 139–158 Numerous teleost species possess ctenoid scales characterized by the presence of ctenial spines arranged in rows (the cteni) along their posterior, free margin. Whilst the morphology and function of the ctenial spines are similar to those of odontodes (extra‐oral teeth), e.g. in armored catfish, their homology is questionable. To address this problem, we have studied ctenial spine development, structure, attachment to a bony support, and replacement with the aim of comparing these features to those described for odontodes. The ctenial spines have been studied in a growth series of the cichlid Cichlasoma nigrofasciatum, using light, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Ctenial spines are entirely constituted of a collagen matrix. They lack a pulp cavity and, although their distal end can be in contact with the epidermal basal layer cells, they are not covered by an enameloid‐like tissue. They are attached to the scale by means of a narrow strand of unmineralized collagen matrix acting as a ligament and allowing spines to be movable. The ctenial spines develop as prolongations of the external layer of the scale, a woven‐fibroid collagen matrix, and subsequently grow by addition of parallel‐fibred collagen matrix. New ctenial spines are added at the posterior scale border in waves that follow the same rhythm as the deposition of circuli in the anterior region. From the focus region to the scale border, the ctenial spines constitute lines in which only the most posterior ctenial spine is functional. The other spines that are no longer functional are not shed but resorbed from the top, and their attachment region mineralizes and thickens by deposition of new material. The remnants of spines constitute the main part of the superficial layer of the scale in which anchoring bundles attach; this region is covered afterwards by the limiting layer, a tissue devoid of collagen fibrils. Because of their tooth‐like morphology (shape and size), their posterior orientation and their attachment to the scale surface, the ctenial spines resemble odontodes. Moreover, both elements perform a similar hydrodynamic function. Nevertheless, the structure and development of the ctenial spines differ completely from those of odontodes and consequently, they cannot be considered homologous elements. Ctenial spines and odontodes in teleosts provide us with a beautiful example of homoplasy; they share shape and function, but have a different origin as evidenced by their different structure and process of development.  相似文献

Summary The follicular epithelial layers of the developing ovary of two cichlid species were examined by electron microscopy for evidence of steroid secretion. As each oocyte grew, its follicular cell layers increased in height, eventually becoming somewhat columnar; no development could be detected in follicle cells of non-activated oocytes. Isolated cells close to capillaries in the thecal layer developed large amounts of smooth membrane indicative of steroidogenesis, appearing similar at maturity to testicular Leydig cells. In Cichlasoma nigrofasciatum the mitochondria of differentiated thecal elements contained microtubule-like inclusions. It is suggested that these cells may produce estrogens during vitellogenesis. In developing granulosa cells, active synthesis of granular endoplasmic reticulum occurred. This membrane appeared to arise from the nuclear envelope, and in the pre-ovulatory stage was always intermediate between smooth and granular forms, being only partly associated with ribosomes. Evidence for steroid biosynthesis in the granulosa at this time was therefore equivocal. Evidence was found of transfer of micropinocytotic vesicles from the granulosa cells into the ooplasm. The fate of the post-ovulatory follicle was investigated in Cichlasoma. Thecal elements remained separate from granulosa and unchanged in ultrastructure for up to ten days. The granulosa cells proliferated and differentiated within a few hours after ovulation into a cell type containing much smooth reticulum, characteristic of steroidogenesis. However, after approximately three days numerous signs of degenerative processes became visible. The significance of the observed ultrastructural changes in relation to endocrine function is discussed.  相似文献

Systematics of Tanganyikan cichlid fishes (Teleostei: Perciformes)   总被引:6,自引:1,他引:5
The relationships among 53 genera of Tanganyikan cichlid fishes were analyzed based on internal and external morphological features. Comparison of the morphological cladistic tree with a previously proposed classification showed 5 of 12 tribes to be nonmonophyletic. Sixteen tribes were recognized, the changes in classification being that Trematocarini was treated as a junior synonym of Bathybatini; 5 new tribes were established for each of the following genera, Benthochromis, Boulengerochromis, Ctenochromis benthicola, Cyphotilapia, and Greenwoodochromis; Ctenochromis horei was transferred from Haplochromini to Tropheini; and Gnathochromis pfefferi was transferred from Limnochromini to Tropheini. The revised classification was supported by previously proposed molecular trees.  相似文献

Convict cichlids, Cichlasoma nigrofasciatum , inbred for four and five generations exhibited moderate and severe morphological deformities. Deformed fishes were characterized by a more vertically sloping forehead, irregular jaw, hyoid, opercula and fin structure, reduced growth and irregular swimming behaviour. Inbred fish (F4, F5) did not differ from F1s in their age of maturation or the average size of their first broods. Brood survival was 18.7% in F5 inbred fish, compared to 75.5% in F1s.  相似文献

Embryonic and larval staging of summer flounder (Paralichthys dentatus)   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
Early development of flatfishes such as the summer flounder Paralichthys dentatus (Pleuronectiformes) has not been extensively documented, largely because of a dearth of material; however, the recent expansion of flatfish aquaculture has made embryos of P. dentatus readily available for developmental studies. We divide development of P. dentatus embryos and larvae into two main periods, pre- and posthatching, and assign stages within each of those primary divisions. Stages from fertilization to hatching loosely follow the general teleost staging scheme suggested by Shardo ([1995] J Morphol 225:125-167); stages from hatching through metamorphosis are aligned with the series used for Japanese flounder, P. olivaceus (Minami [1982] Nippon Suisan Gakkaishi 48:1581-1588; Fukuhara [1986] Nippon Suisan Gakkaishi 52:81-91). Although length, width, and age may serve as approximate indicators of developmental progression in summer flounder, these characteristics are too variable to form the sole basis of a staging table. Therefore, we define stages by morphological criteria drawn from the development of the jaw apparatus and digestive system, eye migration, and notochord tip flexion. Examination of these morphological features in hatched larvae allows accurate and consistent assessment of developmental stage despite variation in timing and size. The staging scheme for flounder embryonic and larval development presented here should facilitate both experimental and comparative research on summer flounder and other flatfish species.  相似文献

The effect of larval density on development and diapause of Sesamia nonagrioides (Lef.) was examined. Larvae were grown on an artificial diet at densities of five, 10, 20, 30 and 40 larvae per box, under two environmental (diapause-including and diapause-averting) conditions. High larval densities resulted in increased mortality under both experimental conditions tested. Although crowded larvae showed a higher pupation rate than those reared under low densities, small differences occurred between mean larval developmental time at different densities under developmental condition. In spite of this, crowding proved effective on the intensity of diapause of this species and the duration of diapause was shorter for crowded larvae. Pupal weights of both sexes were significantly reduced at high densities while there were significant differences between pupal weights formed by larvae reared under diapause conditions and those formed by larvae reared under nondiapause conditions at all density treatments. The pupal period was significantly longer under diapause conditions than that under development conditions but density was not found to play a role on the time of the emergence of the adults produced by larvae reared under developmental or diapause conditions.  相似文献

Male firemouth cichlids, Cichlasoma meeki, have red pigmentationcovering large areas of their ventral surface, which is displayedduring aggressive interactions. We manipulated the levels ofred pigmentation by assigning the fish to one of two diets, which were as similar as possible except that one was high incarotenoids while the other was low in carotenoids. During diadictrials under white light, fish kept on the high carotenoid dietwon a higher proportion of contests than fish kept on the lowcarotenoid diet Under green light, where differences in rednesscannot be discriminated, there was no effect of diet on theoutcome of contests. These experiments demonstrate that it isthe effect of the diet on red pigmentation that is importantrather than some confounding variable such as differential growthrates. The weight of the two fish was also important; therewas a tendency for the heavier fish to win more contests. Themass effect was subordinate to color under white light but wasthe dominant factor under green light The nature of the contestsunder the different light conditions also varied; the displayin which the red pigmentation is most obvious was not used undergreen light, but was common under white light This suggeststhat the display strategies are flexible and can be alteredaccording to which displays are most effective in a given environmentPrevious studies of other species of fish and birds have shownthat the degree of redness influences mate choice and is affectedby parasite infestations. We propose that carotenoid pigmentationis likely to reflect a general quality, influenced by severalfactors, rather than a context-specific quality such as fightingability.  相似文献
