Recent research suggests that, under unconstrained human circumstances, pastoral nomads within arid environments have at their disposal means of evading ecological stress that could impel them to cause damage to their grazing and land resources. The Israeli-Egyptian border has imposed a severe constraint upon the range management strategy of the Bedouin whose traditional territory it bisects. The border forced them to exert an increased pressure upon local resources. Considerable damage was thus caused to the perennial vegetation cover (both macrophytes and microphytes) and to the structure of sand dunes on the Egyptian side of the border, with opposite effects on the Israeli side to which the Bedouin had no access. This case study adds a further dimension to the discussion of range management by pastoral nomads in arid and semi-arid areas.  相似文献

Acacia trees in Sinai desert are suffering population decline. This study aims to explore this assumption and to determine the effects of grazing and urbanization on size structure of Acacia tortilis subsp. raddiana along a gradient of water availability in Wadi Feiran basin, South Sinai, Egypt. Size structure of 289 Acacia trees in thirteen isolated populations was analysed. Catchment area and lineament density as water availability indicators were calculated. Effects of grazing and urbanization on Acacia populations were evaluated. A strong positive correlation was recognized between tree height, crown diameter and trunk circumference. Acacia tree density and crown diameter are positively correlated with water availability indicators. Population structure of A. tortilis is characterized by absence of juveniles, clear reduction in numbers of small and large categories and increasing in medium categories. This pattern indicates very low recruitment and high mortality of small and large trees. The variation in water availability may have considerable effects on the structure of A. tortilis. Overgrazing, cutting and urbanization are the main causes of population decline of Acacia in Sinai desert. In addition, drought conditions and bruchid seed beetles aggravate the anthropogenic effect on recruitment of Acacia in South Sinai.  相似文献

Theoretical models predict that the relative importance of facilitation and competition may vary inversely across gradients of abiotic stress. However, these predictions have not been thoroughly tested in the field, especially in arid and semi-arid environments. In this study, we evaluated how the net effect of Acacia tortilis subsp. raddiana (syn. A. raddiana) trees on the herbaceous species varies across a gradient of water stress in arid Tunisian ecosystems. Our results show that the influence of trees on the herbaceous stratum is beneficial. An Acacia tree improves the richness of herbaceous species around it by two to three times. The positive effect of Acacia raddiana on species composition is characterised in particular by a better development of some species of high pastoral value such as Cenchrusciliaris, Cynodon dactylon, Eragrostis papposa, Sisymbrium irio and Chenopodium album. We fitted the relationship between seasonal rainfall and the relative neighbour effect index, which varied across this gradient, to a linear model. Our results show that herbaceous plant cover, plant biomass, plant density and diversity are higher under a tree canopy and this positive interaction still increase with higher abiotic stress conditions.  相似文献

Epiphytic lichen diversity was studied in forests of Siberian larch (Larix sibirica) in the forest-steppe ecotone of the Mongolian Altai. These forests are utilized for livestock grazing, fuelwood collection and occasional logging by pastoral nomads. The density of nomad households in the proximity of the forests influences epiphytic lichen diversity more strongly than the position of sample trees in the forest interior or at the forest line to the steppe. This suggests that land use exerts a stronger effect on lichen diversity than the distinct gradient in microclimate between the forest interior and the forest edge. The co-occurrence of nitrophytes with anitrophytic acidophytes on a small spatial scale as well as higher N and Ca concentrations and pH values in the bark of larch trees at the forest edge than in the forest interior indicate that moderate livestock grazing increases the epiphytic lichen diversity due to an increase of the diversity of chemically different microhabitats. Preference of many lichen species (and of rare species in particular) for overmature and decaying trees suggests that logging and fuelwood collection has adverse effects on epiphytic lichen diversity. This adverse effect is likely to be more crucial for lichen diversity than the putatively positive effect of livestock grazing, since more lichens with a preference for old and decaying trees than for nitrogen-enriched bark were found. The present study is the first one investigating the impact of pastoral nomadism in Central Asia on epiphyte diversity.  相似文献

The present study was carried out to determine an optimum honeybee colony’s carrying capacity of selected valleys dominated by Ziziphus spina-christi and Acacia tortilis in the Al-Baha region, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The study was conducted based on the assessment of the number of colonies kept, their productivities and the existing productive bee forage resources in the target valleys with its economic implication. In the existing beekeeping practice, the average number of managed honeybee colonies introduced per square kilometer was 530 and 317 during the flowering period of Z. spina-christi and A. tortilis, respectively. Furthermore, the overall ratios of productive bee forage plants to the number of honeybee colonies introduced were 0.55 and 11.12 to Ziziphus trees and A. tortilis shrubs respectively. In the existing situation the average honey production potential of 5.21 and 0.34 kg was recorded per Ziziphus and A. tortilis plants per flowering season, respectively. The present study, revealed that the number of honeybee colonies introduced in relation to the existing bee forage potential was extremely overcrowding which is beyond the carrying capacity of bee forage resources in selected valleys and it has been observed to affect the productivities and subsequent profitability of beekeeping. The study infers that, by keeping the optimum honeybee colony’s carrying capacity of valleys (88 traditional hives/km2 or 54 Langstroth hives/km2 in Ziziphus field and 72 traditional hives/km2 or 44 Langstroth hives/km2 in A. tortilis field), profitability of beekeeping can be boosted up to 130.39% and 207.98% during Z. spina-christi and A. tortilis, flowering seasons, respectively.  相似文献

The conversion of forest to agriculture across the world’s tropics, and the limited space for protected areas, has increased the need to identify effective conservation strategies in human-modified landscapes. Isolated trees are believed to conserve elements of ecological structure, providing micro-sites for conservation in matrix landscapes, and facilitating seed dispersal and forest restoration. Here we investigate the role of isolated Ficus trees, which are of critical importance to tropical forest ecosystems, in conserving frugivore composition and function in a human-modified landscape in Assam, India. We surveyed the frugivorous birds feeding at 122 isolated Ficus trees, 33 fruit trees, and 31 other large trees across a range of 32 km from the nearest intact forest. We found that Ficus trees attracted richer and more abundant assemblages of frugivores than the other tree categories. However, incidence function estimates revealed that forest specialist species decreased dramatically within the first kilometre of the forest edge. Despite this, species richness and functional diversity remained consistent across the human-modified landscape, as habitat generalists replaced forest-dependent frugivores, and accounted for most of the ecological function found in Ficus trees near the forest edge. We recommend that isolated Ficus trees are awarded greater conservation status, and suggest that their conservation can support ecologically functional networks of frugivorous bird communities.  相似文献

Vital statistics on pastoral nomadic and sedentarizing nomadic societies are by-and-large non-existent. Such information is highly important for both academic and policy-making reasons as pastoral nomadism as a mode of life is disappearing. This paper attempts to gather and present as much information as possible on crude birth and death rates and natural increase rates for various pastoral nomadic societies in different African and Middle Eastern countries. The information is arranged by a subdivision into nomads, seminomads, and sedentarized nomads. A summarization of this information suggests a possible pattern by which birth rates rise, death rates fall (but may rise in certain circumstances), and natural increase rates rise along the nomadism-sedentarism continuum. Such a possible pattern has several policy implications for governments assessing the needs of a nomadic society undergoing a process of change in its socio-ecological relationships.This article was written while the author was a visiting scholar at the Department of Geography at the University of California. Many plants and ants engage in mutualisms where plants provide food and shelter to the ants in exchange for protection against herbivores and competitors. Although several species of herbivores thwart ant defenses and extract resources from the plants, the mechanisms that allow these herbivores to avoid attack are poorly understood. The specialist insect herbivore, Piezogaster reclusus (Hemiptera: Coreidae), feeds on Neotropical bull-horn acacias (Vachellia collinsii) despite the presence of Pseudomyrmex spinicola ants that nest in and aggressively defend the trees. We tested three hypotheses for how P. reclusus feeds on V. collinsii while avoiding ant attack: (1) chemical camouflage via cuticular surface compounds, (2) chemical deterrence via metathoracic defense glands, and (3) behavioral traits that reduce ant detection or attack. Our results showed that compounds from both P. reclusus cuticles and metathoracic glands reduce the number of ant attacks, but only cuticular compounds appear to be essential in allowing P. reclusus to feed on bull-horn acacia trees undisturbed. In addition, we found that ant attack rates to P. reclusus increased significantly when individuals were transferred between P. spinicola ant colonies. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that chemical mimicry of colony-specific ant or host plant odors plays a key role in allowing P. reclusus to circumvent ant defenses and gain access to important resources, including food and possibly enemy-free space. This interaction between ants, acacias, and their herbivores provides an excellent example of the ability of herbivores to adapt to ant defenses of plants and suggests that herbivores may play an important role in the evolution and maintenance of mutualisms.  相似文献

Talh trees (Acacia gerrardii Benth.) are acacias that are native to the arid and semiarid Africa and west Asia. We investigated the flowering biology, pod set and flower visitors of Talh and discussed the role of these visitors in pollen transfer. The Talh trees blossomed laterally on the nodes of one-year-old twigs. Each node produced 21 flower buds seasonally. Each flower bud opened to a flower head (FH) of 60 florets. The bagged FHs podded significantly (p  0.05) less than did the unbagged FHs. The FHs were visited by 31 insect species (25 genera, 16 families and 5 orders). The major taxa were honeybees, megachilids, butterflies, ants, beetles and thrips. Each of honeybees, megachilids and beetles showed a significant (p  0.05) hourly pattern, while each of butterflies, ants and thrips had no hourly pattern (p > 0.05). Furthermore, some birds and mammals touched the Talh FHs. Talh trees evolved a mass flowering behavior to face pre- and post-flowering obstacles. Megachilids seemed to play the major effort of zoophily because of their relatively high numbers of individuals and species and their effective movement behavior on the FH surface. Nevertheless, honeybees and other insects and vertebrate taxa also contributed to the pollen transfer. These results greatly contribute to our understanding of the pollination ecology of acacias, especially Arabian acacias.  相似文献

Seedling establishment is a critical life history stage for savanna tree recruitment due to variability in resource availability. While tree–grass competition for water is recognized as an important driver of tree seedling mortality, the importance of sunlight exposure on tree seedling performance has received little attention in savanna ecosystems despite variable seedling light environments caused by heterogeneity in biomass of the grass canopy. We studied the seasonal sunlight micro-environment for two dominant East African tree species (Acacia?=?Vachellia) robusta (Burch) and A. tortilis (Forssk) under natural field conditions. In the Serengeti National Park, Tanzania, A. robusta trees occur in tall grasslands of the north (shady) and A. tortilis in the southern short grasslands (less shaded). We also designed a greenhouse experiment to quantify sunlight effects on seedling growth, architecture, and resource allocation traits. In the field, A. robusta seedlings were associated with lower understorey sunlight during the wet season compared to A. tortilis, with this trend switching during the dry season. In the greenhouse experiments, under low sunlight (25% radiation), A. robusta gained height faster than A. tortilis and self-shading among canopy leaves was evident in A. tortilis but not A. robusta. Biomass allocation to leaves, stems, and roots differed between species under different light environments suggesting phenotypic plasticity in response to variable light availability. Our study suggests that microsite light variability should be incorporated in models of the spatial and temporal variability of savanna tree recruitment.

Among Middle Eastern pastoral nomads some "tribes" can best be described as "units of subsistence": they exploit an area providing multiannual subsistence. Tribesmen sometimes control this area; more usually they control part of it and share the rest with other nomads and with settled people. Small corporate groups afford the tribesman security and, through genealogical links, mediate his formal membership of the tribe. The unit of subsistence is articulated mainly by networks of institutionalized relationships. Corporate groups join forces only for defense, and then their alliances cut across tribal lines. Under external pressure the unit of subsistence may develop formal leadership and a small standing militia. This administrative setup is in the literature often associated with the corporate groups and called "tribe." The population structure of 10 common woody perennials was investigated in terms of size distribution, height, diameter and density in Wadi Gimal along the Red Sea coast of Egypt. It was attempted to assess the effect of elevation on the size, distribution and density of the studied species. These species are: five trees (Acacia tortilis subsp. raddiana, Acacia tortilis subsp. tortilis, Balanites aegyptiaca, Tamarix aphylla, and Tamarix nilotica), two shrubs (Leptadenia pyrotechnica and Nitraria retusa) and three shrublets (Pulicaria undulata, Zilla spinosa, and Zygophyllum coccineum). The size estimations were then used to classify population into six size classes: 20-80 cm for shrublets, 100-500 cm for shrubs, and 2-10 m for trees. The absolute and relative frequency of individuals and mean height, diameter and height to diameter ratio per individual in each size class were determined. Density of occurrence of most species, except B. aegyptiaca, decreased as elevation increased. The height-to-diameter ratio was less than unity for most of the recorded species except T. nilotica. Several forms - including, positively and negatively skewed, inverse J-shaped, bell shaped and more or less J-shaped distributions - were recognized along the different elevations. The size structure of some species was positively related with soil variables, such as T. nilotica with sulphate, while some others were negatively significant related to the substrate characteristics, such as Z. spinosa with salinity.  相似文献

Native geographical range extent has frequently emerged as a correlate of invasiveness, especially for plant species. We tested whether dimensions of the native range (measured by the area-of-occupancy and its scaling patterns) of 720 Australian eucalypts (genera Angophora, Eucalyptus and Corymbia) could explain introduction and invasion success. We also compared our results with a previous study on 979 Australian acacias (previously grouped in Acacia subgenus Phyllodineae) to investigate whether features of their native ranges explained the much higher invasion success in this group compared to eucalypts. From nine databases we found records that 373 eucalypts have been introduced to areas outside their native ranges; 82 of these have become naturalised, and eight are invasive. A similar proportion of Australian acacias have been introduced, but almost three times as many are invasive (384 species introduced, 71 of which are naturalized and 23 invasive). Eucalypts with large native ranges are more likely to have been introduced and subsequently naturalise, as is the case with acacias. Unlike acacias, however, the native range size of invasive eucalypts was not significantly greater than naturalised (but not invasive) species. Intriguingly, the human preference for introducing species with larger ranges was much greater for acacias than for eucalypts as the geometric mean range sizes of introduced, naturalised and invasive acacias are 2.04, 1.88 and 3.59 times those of eucalypts at the same stage. Moreover, the percolation exponent (i.e. the slope of occupancy scaling) becomes more extreme towards the end of the introduction–naturalization–invasion continuum, decreasing for acacias but increasing for eucalypts, with acacias, except for non-introduced species, having a lower exponent than eucalypts. The selection preference of acacias during introduction is thus for species that can rapidly expand their range; in contrast, slow-spreading eucalypts have been selected for dissemination. In other words, humans appear to have selected for highly invasive acacias but against introducing highly invasive eucalypts.  相似文献

Acacia trees in Costa Rica have an obligate mutualism with three species of Pseudomyrmex ants, which vigorously defend their host tree from insect and mammalian herbivores. Depending on the size and species of ant colony, individual acacia trees may be differentially protected. For animals able to discern between weakly and highly aggressive ant colonies, costs of ant stings from less active colonies might be offset by nutritional value acquired from feeding on acacia fruit or ant larvae in swollen thorns. We examined foraging selectivity of capuchin monkeys on acacia trees in Santa Rosa National Park, Costa Rica. We measured four characteristics of the acacia trees from which capuchins fed and of acacias immediately adjacent to those in which the monkeys fed: diameter at breast height (DBH), accessibility, species of closest tree and ant species present. We found that capuchins prefer to forage in acacias that are large and accessible. We also made two measurements of ant colony activity on each tree, one before and one after disturbing the ant colony. We found that the three species of mutualistic ants differ in baseline activity levels and that mutualistic ants are more active than non-mutualistic ant species found in acacia trees. We also found that capuchins foraged more frequently in trees colonized by non-mutualistic ants, but the explanatory value (r 2) of this model was low. Furthermore, monkeys did not discriminate between acacias on the basis of baseline ant activity or the ant colony’s response to disturbance. We conclude that these monkeys select acacia trees in which to forage based on characteristics of the trees rather than the ants. In addition, our study suggests that white-faced capuchins act as predators on the acacia ants but they probably benefit the dispersal and reproductive success of acacia trees. Capuchins may in fact function as an additional mutualistic partner for acacia trees via seed dispersal, but they must overcome the ants’ defense of the trees to do so.  相似文献

In the present study, we analyzed the genetic diversity, phylogenetic relationships, stress tolerance, phytobeneficial traits, and symbiotic characteristics of rhizobial strains isolated from root nodules of Vachellia tortilis subsp. raddiana grown in soils collected in the extreme Southwest of the Anti-Atlas Mountains in Morocco. Subsequent to Rep-PCR fingerprinting, 16S rDNA gene sequencing of 15 representative strains showed that all of them belong to the genus Ensifer. Phylogenetic analysis and concatenation of the housekeeping genes gyrB, rpoB, recA, and dnaK revealed that the entire collection (except strain LMR678) shared 99.08 % to 99.92% similarity with Ensifer sp. USDA 257 and 96.92% to 98.79% with Sinorhizobium BJ1. Phylogenetic analysis of nodC and nodA sequences showed that all strains but one (LMR678) formed a phylogenetic group with the type strain “E. aridi” LMR001T (similarity over 98%). Moreover, it was relevant that most strains belong to the symbiovar vachelliae. In vitro tests revealed that five strains produced IAA, four solubilized inorganic phosphate, and one produced siderophores. All strains showed tolerance to NaCl concentrations ranging from 2 to 12% and grew at up to 10% of PEG6000. A greenhouse plant inoculation test conducted during five months demonstrated that most rhizobial strains were infective and efficient. Strains LMR688, LMR692, and LMR687 exhibited high relative symbiotic efficiency values (respectively 231.6 %, 171.96 %, and 140.84 %). These strains could be considered as the most suitable candidates for inoculation of V. t. subsp. raddiana, to be used as a pioneer plant for restoring arid soils threatened with desertification.  相似文献

Cry2Aa, one of the major insecticidal proteins produced by Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. kurstaki HD1, is known to be active against both lepidopteran and dipteran larvae. In order to determine whether Cry2Aa could enhance or synergize the mosquitocidal activity of B. thuringiensis subsp. israelensis, we constructed a plasmid vector that harbored the cry2Aa operon and transformed crystalliferous and acrystalliferous strains of this bacterium. The wild-type B. thuringiensis subsp. israelensis, a recombinant B. thuringiensis subsp. israelensis producing Cry2A along with its native major mosquitocidal proteins, and a recombinant B. thuringiensis subsp. israelensis producing Cry2Aa alone were tested against three major mosquito species — Aedes aegypti, Anopheles gambiae and Culex quinquefasciatus. Our results demonstrated that Cry2Aa does not synergize or enhance the mosquitocidal activity of B. thuringiensis subsp. israelensis against these important vectors of disease.  相似文献

Aims The Mongolian Altai is an old settlement area, which is populated by pastoral nomads since 2000–3000 years. Forests in this region (at ca. 2300 m a.s.l.) are highly fragmented and border on steppe and alpine grasslands, which are used for mobile livestock husbandry. The climate in Central Asia is warming to levels clearly above the global average, which affects the vegetation. Furthermore, the transition from planned to market economy and the decollectivization of livestock 20 years ago has strongly changed land use practices in Mongolia, especially resulting in an increase in recent logging activities. We were interested in the question how climate warming and selective logging influence the annual stem growth and the stand structure.Methods The impact of climate and land use by the pastoral nomads on the annual stem increment of more than 1800 trees of Siberian larch (Larix sibirica) was analyzed. Different groups of trees with divergent growth trends depending on the social position and stand history were identified by non-metric multidimensional scaling and analysis of similarities. Long-term trends in the annual stem increment were analyzed by establishing separate regional growth curves for trees of different age classes.Important findings Instrumental climate data substantiate an increase of temperature by 2.1°C since 1940 at constant precipitation. Trees benefit from the increased temperatures. Climate–response analysis revealed that radial stem increment was promoted by the temperature in early summer, but also high precipitation in spring and in the year before tree-ring formation. Forest dynamics is also strongly influenced by anthropogenic activities. In addition to the natural forest dynamics, logging resulted in divergent growth trends within given age classes and habitats (forest interior and forest edge); overall, 22 groups of trees with different characteristics in the annual radial stem increment were identified. A tree-ring series-based reconstruction of logging intensity since 1935 suggests that moderate selective logging occurred throughout the study period. However, selective logging was strongly intensified after 1990 as the result of the breakdown of the Communist regime in Mongolia and the transition from centrally planned to market economy. Because tree stump densities showed that the ratio of felled to live trees was 2:1 in the interior or even 0.9:1 at the edges of the forests and most logging occurred during the past 20 years, it must be concluded that the forests of the Mongolian Altai are presently exploited far beyond the level of sustainability. A close correlation of the ratio of felled to live trees with the density of summer camps of pastoral nomads in the vicinity suggests that trees are primarily felled by the local population.  相似文献

牧民对草地生态系统服务的重要性认知成为推动牧区生态环境保护以及牧民生计可持续发展的重要前提。以喀拉峻180份牧户实地调研数据为基础,在分析牧民对草地生态系统服务的认知程度和生计选择的基础上,运用灰色关联分析探究生态认知与生计选择的总体关联性,并采用多元Logistic模型探究生态系统服务认知对生计选择的具体影响。结果显示:(1)生态系统服务认知水平依次为调节服务(79.83%)>支持服务(78.21%)>文化服务(77.06%),且对气体调节的认知度最高(82.67%),对科研教育的认知度最低(72.11%);(2)生态系统服务认知与生计选择的总体关联度均在0.47以上,处于中等关联水平;3)生态系统服务认知对选择旅游畜牧兼业生计影响相对显著,其中气体调节和土壤保持正向影响旅游畜牧兼业生计选择,而废物处理对其产生负向影响。  相似文献

The past and present regeneration of Siberian larch (Larix sibirica) was studied in the forest-steppe of the Mongolian Altai, an area which has experienced an increase in annual mean temperature by 2.1 °C since 1940 and is subjected to grazing by mixed herds of livestock owned by pastoral nomads. Past regeneration was reconstructed from tree rings and present regeneration was analyzed by surveying seedlings, sapling-sized trees and the occurrence of viable larch seeds in the soil seed bank. Forest regeneration occurred throughout the twentieth and the early twenty-first centuries in the forest interiors, but ceased after the late 1970s at forest edges. The density of sapling-sized larch trees decreased with livestock density linearly in the interior and exponentially at the edge. Most sapling-sized trees had visible damage from livestock browsing, which also manifested in wood-anatomical anomalies. By contrast, the densities of 1- and 2-year old seedlings increased with livestock density at the forest edge, suggesting that seedlings in this habitat benefitted from the reduction in competition intensity due to livestock grazing. This relationship also suggests that larch seedlings, in contrast to sapling-sized trees, were avoided by the livestock, as otherwise removal by the herbivores should have counteracted the promotion due to reduced competition. Near-consistency of the correlations of total livestock and goat densities with sapling and seedling densities suggests that the control of larch regeneration is primarily a function of goat density, which have tripled in the Mongolian livestock during the past 20 years for economic reasons.  相似文献

This study, conducted on Acacia species (Acacia ehrenbergiana Hayne and Acacia tortilis subsp. raddiana (Savi) Brenan) to determine their adaptive capacity to tolerate drought and suitability for reforestation, revealed that leaf water potential (ψ) decreased in both the species with increase in drought intensity. With increase in the intensity of drought, vessel diameter increased in A. ehrenbergiana, causing a significant decline in vessel frequency mm?2 of the transverse wood surface, while it decreased in A. tortilis, leading to a crowded vessel population. Vessel-wall thickness, in conjunction with inter-vessel pit membrane thickness, showed a positive correlation with drought stress in both the species. Ray dimensions generally decreased in A. ehrenbergiana but increased in A. tortilis under increasing degree of drought. The transverse fiber-wall area decreased in A. ehrenbergiana, thus lowering the density (r = 0.996) and enhancing the vulnerability of wood (r = ?0.979) under the drought stress, but increased in A. tortilis, causing a high density (r = ?0.979) and low vulnerability of wood (r = 0.869), under the same set of conditions. Correlation of wood density with vulnerability index was stronger in A. ehrenbergiana (r = ?0.993) than in A. tortilis (r = ?0.753). Diameters and thickness of inter-vessel pit membrane were linearly correlated with increasing intensity of drought in both the species, but its area fraction per vessel segment increased due to water stress in A. ehrenbergiana and decreased in A. tortilis. This study indicated that, on the whole, A. tortilis has a greater capacity to tolerate the harshness of drought than A. ehrenbergiana.  相似文献
