The motor theory of speech perception holds that we perceive the speech of another in terms of a motor representation of that speech. However, when we have learned to recognize a foreign accent, it seems plausible that recognition of a word rarely involves reconstruction of the speech gestures of the speaker rather than the listener. To better assess the motor theory and this observation, we proceed in three stages. Part 1 places the motor theory of speech perception in a larger framework based on our earlier models of the adaptive formation of mirror neurons for grasping, and for viewing extensions of that mirror system as part of a larger system for neuro-linguistic processing, augmented by the present consideration of recognizing speech in a novel accent. Part 2 then offers a novel computational model of how a listener comes to understand the speech of someone speaking the listener’s native language with a foreign accent. The core tenet of the model is that the listener uses hypotheses about the word the speaker is currently uttering to update probabilities linking the sound produced by the speaker to phonemes in the native language repertoire of the listener. This, on average, improves the recognition of later words. This model is neutral regarding the nature of the representations it uses (motor vs. auditory). It serve as a reference point for the discussion in Part 3, which proposes a dual-stream neuro-linguistic architecture to revisits claims for and against the motor theory of speech perception and the relevance of mirror neurons, and extracts some implications for the reframing of the motor theory.  相似文献

Sensory epithelia of the inner ear contain two major cell types: hair cells and supporting cells. It has been clear for a long time that hair cells play critical roles in mechanoreception and synaptic transmission. In contrast, until recently the more abundant supporting cells were viewed as serving primarily structural and homeostatic functions. In this review, we discuss the growing information about the roles that supporting cells play in the development, function and maintenance of the inner ear, their activities in pathological states, their potential for hair cell regeneration, and the mechanisms underlying these processes.  相似文献

Purpose: The contribution of gamma-aminobutyric acidergic inhibitory neural circuits in the primary motor cortex, as estimated by the cortical silent period, during weak and strong force output has not been defined. The aim of this study was to investigate whether cortical silent period is modulated with change from weak to strong force control.

Materials and methods: Eleven healthy right-handed adults participated in this study. With the aid of visual feedback, participants were asked to control the force of abduction of the right index finger to 10%, 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, and 100% of the maximum voluntary contraction. Single pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation was delivered to the left primary motor cortex region during force control tasks. The averaged actual force output level, background electromyography amplitude, and cortical silent period duration were compared between conditions, and correlation analysis was conducted.

Results: There were significant main effects of target force on background electromyography, and cortical silent period duration; with increased force, the actual force output level and background electromyography gradually increased, while cortical silent period duration gradually decreased. There were significant negative correlations between cortical silent period and force and cortical silent period and background electromyography.

Conclusions: These findings indicate that the excitability of gamma-aminobutyric acidergic inhibitory neural circuits in primary motor cortex decreases in response to increased force output, mediated via increased corticospinal and motoneuron excitability. These results may facilitate understanding of the role of the gamma-aminobutyric acidergic circuit in primary motor cortex in force control, as well as of the mechanism underlying motor dysfunction in stroke-induced palsy, dystonia, and cerebellar ataxia.  相似文献

Saccadic eye movements and fixations are the behavioral means by which we visually sample text during reading. Human oculomotor control is governed by a complex neurophysiological system involving the brain stem, superior colliculus, and several cortical areas. A very widely held belief among researchers investigating primate vision is that the oculomotor system serves to orient the visual axes of both eyes to fixate the same target point in space. It is argued that such precise positioning of the eyes is necessary to place images on corresponding retinal locations, such that on each fixation a single, nondiplopic, visual representation is perceived. Vision works actively through a continual sampling process involving saccades and fixations. Here we report that during normal reading, the eyes do not always fixate the same letter within a word. We also demonstrate that saccadic targeting is yoked and based on a unified cyclopean percept of a whole word since it is unaffected if different word parts are delivered exclusively to each eye via a dichoptic presentation technique. These two findings together suggest that the visual signal from each eye is fused at a very early stage in the visual pathway, even when the fixation disparity is greater than one character (0.29 deg), and that saccade metrics for each eye are computed on the basis of that fused signal.  相似文献

It is often challenging to assess cardiac filling pressure clinically. An improved system for detecting or ruling out elevated cardiac filling pressure may help reduce hospitalizations for heart failure. The blood pressure response to the Valsalva maneuver reflects left heart filling pressure, but its underuse clinically may be due in part to lack of continuous blood pressure recording along with lack of standardization of expiratory effort. In this study, we tested whether Valsalva-induced changes in the pulse amplitude of finger photoplethysmography (PPG), a technology already widely available in medical settings, correlate with invasively measured left ventricular end-diastolic pressure (LVEDP). We tested 33 subjects before clinically scheduled cardiac catheterizations. A finger photoplethysmography waveform was recorded during a Valsalva effort of 20 mmHg expiratory pressure sustained for 10 s, an effort most patients can achieve. Pulse amplitude ratio (PAR) was calculated as the PPG waveform amplitude just before release of expiratory effort divided by the waveform amplitude at baseline. PAR was well correlated with LVEDP (r = 0.68; P < 0.0001). For identifying LVEDP > 15 mmHG, PAR > 0.4 was 85% sensitive [95% confidence interval (95CI): 54-97%] and 80% specific (95CI: 56-93%). In conclusion, finger PPG, a technology already ubiquitous in medical centers, may be useful for assessing clinically meaningful categories of left heart filling pressure, using simple analysis of the waveform after a Valsalva maneuver effort that most patients can achieve.  相似文献

The thyroid function and antithyroidal antibody were studied in 17 patients with silent thyroiditis unrelated to pregnancy. The antimicrosomal hemagglutination antibody (MCHA) was negative in ten of them (group I) and was positive in seven (group II). At one month after the thyrotoxicosis, thyroid function became normal in both groups. At two months after the onset of thyrotoxicosis, in group I T4 (8.1 +/- 1.8 micrograms/dl, Mean +/- SD), T3 (113 +/- 25 ng/dl) and TSH were normal. At that time T4 (2.8 +/- 2.2 micrograms/dl) was significantly decreased (p less than 0.001) compared with those of group I and the levels of TSH were strikingly increased in 6 patients in group II. The level of T3 (96 +/- 29 ng/dl) in group II was not different from that of group I. Therefore MCHA was negative in patients who did not develop hypothyroidism and MCHA was positive in patients who developed hypothyroidism. The development of hypothyroidism two months after thyrotoxicosis and positive MCHA are correlated. The Tg was elevated in 7 out of 13 patients (54%) with negative antithyroglobulin hemagglutination antibody and in the remainder was normal during thyrotoxicosis. The discrepancy between the level of Tg and thyroid hormones was discussed.  相似文献

The main goal of this study was to investigate reorganisation of the EEG systemic interactions spatial structure during mental speech production in preschool children: generating sentences from the set of words and generating words from the set of phonemes. In both cases, interhemisphere biopotential relations significantly increased as compared with the baseline (resting with closed eyes). Results of the EEG cross-correlation and coherent analyses showed that during verbal tasks marked intensification of hemisphere interaction was observed. High coefficients of statistic similarity between intercortical interactions patterns in adults and children during sentence and words generating were observed (SC = 0.71 & 0.62 respectively). Opposite to that, lesser coefficients of statistic similarity were observed between these two groups during grammar and semantic mistakes identification (SC < or = 0.50). According to this data we could expect a relatively high maturation level of central mechanisms which underlie the processes of speech production rather than mechanisms which underlie grammar and semantic mistakes identification in preschool children.  相似文献

Background  

The patterns of mutation vary both within and across genomes. It has been shown for a few mammals that mutation rates vary within the genome, while for unknown reasons, the sensu stricto yeasts have uniform rates instead. The generality of these observations has been unknown. Here we examine silent site substitutions in a more expansive set (20 mammals, 27 fungi, 4 insects) to determine why some genomes demonstrate this mosaic distribution and why others are uniform.  相似文献

The Tertiary vegetation of Europe evolved from paratropical to warm-temperate and temperate forms in response to a progressive, non-linear, climatic cooling. Its vegetational forms are composed mainly of two separate ecological units: the evergreen, laurophyll paleotropical geoflora and the deciduous, broad-leaved Arctotertiary geoflora. The development of the Tertiary climate and its interaction with the vegetation are convincingly indicated by the geoflora's migration; the changes in its composition; and the development of the Tertiary forest, swamp, and aquatic plant communities. The paleotropical geoflora is characterized in the upper Cretaceous to the upper Miocene by paratropical rain forest, subtropical rain and laurel forests, temperate laurel forests and edaphically-mediated formation of laurel-conifer forests. The Arctotertiary geoflora advanced into Europe in waves since the Paleocene and formed the basis for the Tertiary mixed mesophytic forests. These can be divided into warm-temperate rain forests, oak-hornbeamchestnut or mixed beech-oak-hornbeam forests, and edaphic formations such as bottomland and swamp forests. Beginning in the lower Cretaceous, the hydrophytic vegetation developed independently of the forest vegetation and formed very diverse herbaceous fresh water, swamp, salt water, and coastal formations. Considerable differences in composition allow to separate floral regions and provinces in Eurosiberia. Instead of three ill-defined floral regions in the Paleocene, there are four well-defined floral regions in the Pliocene. A Mediterranean region cannot be recognized, although Mediterranean (eumesogeic) floral elements appear in the Eocene/Oligocene and thereafter. The Mediterranean sclerophyll forests probably arose after the destruction of the laurophyll forests during the Pleistocene.  相似文献

The changes in vascular albumin permeation induced by systemic anaphylaxis were studied simultaneously in 21 different tissues of the same animal. Before Ag challenge sensitized rats were injected i.v. with 125I-albumin (test tracer), 51Cr-RBC (vascular space marker) and 57Co-EDTA (extravascular space marker). The index of vascular permeation used was the tissue to blood isotope ratio (tbir), which was obtained by dividing the ratio of 125I/51Cr counts in each tissue by the ratio of the same isotopes in the arterial blood sample. After Ag challenge, the increase in the tbir varied considerably among the different tissues. The most pronounced increase was noted in the lymph node (ninefold) followed by the aorta and mesentery (six- to sevenfold) and the various parts of the gastrointestinal tract (four- to sixfold). In the skin less than skeletal muscle less than lung less than liver and eye two- to fourfold increases occurred. Relatively minor increases in albumin permeation (less than twofold) were observed in the brain less than kidney less than heart and less than spleen. The testis was the only organ in which no significant change occurred. For some of the tissues there was also an increase in the tbir for 57Co/51Cr (an index of the extracellular fluid space) suggesting edema formation. The highest increase was noted in the aorta (fourfold). Minor increases occurred in the atrium of the heart, stomach, duodenum, and lymph nodes. There was also a 36% increase in hematocrit. Therefore, systemic anaphylaxis caused extensive extravasation of albumin and hemoconcentration.  相似文献

Wetlands are important and restricted habitats for dependent biota and play vital roles in landscape function, hydrology and carbon sequestration. They are also likely to be one of the most sensitive components of the terrestrial biosphere to global climate change. An understanding of relationships between wetland persistence and climate is imperative for predicting, mitigating and adapting to the impacts of future climate change on wetland extent and function. We investigated whether mire wetlands had contracted, expanded or remained stable during 1960–2000. We chose a study area encompassing a regional climatic gradient in southeastern Australia, specifically to avoid confounding effects of water extraction on wetland hydrology and extent. We first characterized trends in climate by examining data from local weather stations, which showed a slight increase in precipitation and marked decline in pan evaporation over the relevant period. Remote sensing of vegetation boundaries showed a marked lateral expansion of mires during 1961–1998, and a corresponding contraction of woodland. The spatial patterns in vegetation change were consistent with the regional climatic gradient and showed a weaker co‐relationship to fire history. Resource exploitation, wildland fires and autogenic mire development failed to explain the observed expansion of mire vegetation in the absence of climate change. We therefore conclude that the extent of mire wetlands is likely to be sensitive to variation in climatic moisture over decadal time scales. Late 20th‐century trends in climatic moisture may be related primarily to reduced irradiance and/or reduced wind speeds. In the 21st century, however, net climatic moisture in this region is projected to decline. As mires are apparently sensitive to hydrological change, we anticipate lateral contraction of mire boundaries in coming decades as projected climatic drying eventuates. This raises concerns about the future hydrological functions, carbon storage capacity and unique biodiversity of these important ecosystems.  相似文献

Serum estradiol-17beta concentrations were determined during silent estrus in the mare. Relationships between serum estradiol-17beta concentration, corpus luteum regression, follicular development, ovulation, prostaglandin treatment and behavioral estrus were investigated. The expression of behavioral estrus was found to be related to the patterns of progesterone and estradiol-17beta secretion during the periovulatory period. When compared to normal estrous cycles, silent estrus was accompanied by a significantly lower maximum serum estradiol-17beta concentration (47.8 vs 34.6 pg/ml), a significantly longer interval from maximum estradiol-17beta concentration to ovulation (1.7 vs 4.0 days), and a significantly shorter interval from corpus luteum regression to ovulation (5.3 vs 2.8 days). Silent estrus following prostaglandin treatment was related to a significantly shorter interval from prostaglandin treatment to ovulation (3.6 +/- 0.4 days) than from normal corpus luteum regression to ovulation (5.3 +/- 0.3 days). Silent estrus appeared to be related to changes in follicular estradiol-17beta secretion and to the pattern of its secretion as related to regression of the corpus luteum. There appeared to be not only less estradiol-17beta present, but also less time available after luteal regression for it to interact with the central nervous system to elicit the changes necessary to cause behavioral estrus. There fore, unusual relationships between luteal function and folliculogenesis can result in one type of silent estrus. Significant correlations (P<0.05) were found between follicle size and serum estradiol-17beta concentration whenever behavioral estrus occurred [follicle diameter in mm = 0.96 (serum estradiol-17beta in pg/ml) + 6.08 and 0.73 (serum estradiol-17beta + 13.32 for control and normal estrus following prostaglandin treatment groups, respectively]. During silent estrus, however, no significant correlations between follicle size and serum estradiol-17beta concentration were observed.  相似文献

Context: Acute kidney injury (AKI) could lead to progressive chronic kidney disease (CKD). Objectives: To demonstrate that urinary markers in AKI are associated with the degree of persistent renal injury. Material and methods: Human L-FABP chromosomal transgenic (Tg) mice were subjected to ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) clamping renal pedicle for 20?min or 30?min. Kidneys were obtained at one and 40 days after I/R. Results: Urinary L-FABP, NGAL, Kim-1 and albumin levels increased during the acute phase and were significantly correlated with the degree of tubulointerstitial fibrosis during the chronic phase. Discussion and conclusion: These markers could detect higher risk of progression to CKD.  相似文献

The relationship between acoustic myography (AMG), electromyography (EMG) and force during submaximal dynamic contractions was examined in the biceps brachii muscles of eight healthy males (aged 17-26 years). Different weights were lifted and lowered at a constant speed, using a wall pulley system, to perform concentric and eccentric contractions, respectively. Integrated AMG (iAMG) and integrated EMG (iEMG) activity both increased linearly with force during concentric (iAMG r = 0.94; iEMG r = 0.99) and eccentric (iAMG r = 0.90; iEMG r = 0.94) contractions. The slopes of the concentric regression lines were significantly different from the eccentric slopes (P less than 0.01) for both iAMG and iEMG with concentric contractions showing greater levels of activity. The results indicated that AMG can be used to detect changes in force during dynamic contractions which has important implications for the use of AMG in rehabilitation. The differences in iAMG activity between concentric and eccentric contractions are discussed in relationship to the origin of the AMG signal.  相似文献

Leaf senescence is an organized process, which requires fine tuning between nuclear gene expression, activity of proteases and the maintenance of primary metabolism. Recently, we reported that leaf senescence was accompanied by an early degradation of the microtubule cytoskeleton in Arabidopsis thaliana. As the cytoskeleton is essential for cell stability, vesicle shuttling and organelle mobility, it might be asked how the regulation of these cell functions occurs with such drastic modifications of the cytoskeleton. Based on confocal laser microscopy observations and a micro-array analysis, the following addendum shows that mitochondrial mobility is conserved until the late stages of leaf senescence and provides evidences that the actin-cytoskeleton is maintained longer than the microtubule network. This conservation of actin-filaments is discussed with regards to energy metabolism as well as calcium signaling during programmed cell death.Key words: actin, cytoskeleton, microtubule, mitochondria, mobility, senescence  相似文献
