Magnetotactic bacteria produce nanometer‐size intracellular magnetic crystals. The superior crystalline and magnetic properties of magnetosomes have been attracting much interest in medical applications. To investigate effects of intense static magnetic field on magnetosome formation in Magnetospirillum magneticum AMB‐1, cultures inoculated with either magnetic or non‐magnetic pre‐cultures were incubated under 0.2 T static magnetic field or geomagnetic field. The results showed that static magnetic field could impair the cellular growth and raise Cmag values of the cultures, which means that the percentage of magnetosome‐containing bacteria was increased. Static magnetic field exposure also caused an increased number of magnetic particles per cell, which could contribute to the increased cellular magnetism. The iron depletion in medium was slightly increased after static magnetic field exposure. The linearity of magnetosome chain was also affected by static magnetic field. Moreover, the applied intense magnetic field up‐regulated mamA, mms13, magA expression when cultures were inoculated with magnetic cells, and mms13 expression in cultures inoculated with non‐magnetic cells. The results implied that the interaction of the magnetic field created by magnetosomes in AMB‐1 was affected by the imposed magnetic field. The applied static magnetic field could affect the formation of magnetic crystals and the arrangement of the neighboring magnetosome. In the present study, the effect of the static and alternating magnetic field applied individually and in combination with an algal extract on the germination of soybean seeds (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) and chlorophyll content was examined. The exposure time of seeds to the static magnetic field was 3, 6, and 12 min, whereas to the alternating magnetic field was 1, 2.5, and 5 min. The static magnetic field was obtained by means of a permanent magnets system while the alternating magnetic field by means of magnetic coils. Algal extract was produced from a freshwater macroalga—Cladophora glomerata using ultrasound homogenizer. In the germination tests, 10% extract was applied to the paper substrate before sowing. This is the first study that compares the germination of soybean seeds exposed to the static and alternating magnetic field. The best effect on the germination and chlorophyll content in seedlings had synergistic action of the static magnetic field on seeds for 3 min applied together with the extract and alternating magnetic field used for 2.5 min. It is not possible to clearly state which magnetic field better stimulated the germination of seeds, but the chlorophyll content in seedlings was much higher for alternating magnetic field.  相似文献

Effects of static magnetic fields at the cellular level   总被引:9,自引:0,他引:9
There have been few studies on the effects of static magnetic fields at the cellular level, compared to those of extremely low frequency magnetic fields. Past studies have shown that a static magnetic field alone does not have a lethal effect on the basic properties of cell growth and survival under normal culture conditions, regardless of the magnetic density. Most but not all studies have also suggested that a static magnetic field has no effect on changes in cell growth rate. It has also been shown that cell cycle distribution is not influenced by extremely strong static magnetic fields (up to a maximum of 10 T). A further area of interest is whether static magnetic fields cause DNA damage, which can be evaluated by determination of the frequency of micronucleus formation. The presence or absence of such micronuclei can confirm whether a particular treatment damages cellular DNA. This method has been used to confirm that a static magnetic field alone has no such effect. However, the frequency of micronucleus formation increases significantly when certain treatments (e.g., X-irradiation) are given prior to exposure to a 10 T static magnetic field. It has also been reported that treatment with trace amounts of ferrous ions in the cell culture medium and exposure to a static magnetic field increases DNA damage, which is detected using the comet assay. In addition, many studies have found a strong magnetic field that can induce orientation phenomena in cell culture.  相似文献

This review is aimed to summarize the experimental researches in the influences of static magnetic field on laboratory rodent models, reported by laboratory scientists, experimental technicians, clinical surgeons, animal veterinarians, and other researchers. Past studies suggested that static magnetic field-singly applied or used combined with other physical or chemical substances-significantly relieved some pains and ameliorated certain diseases in different organ systems, e.g. hypertension, osteoporosis, neuralgia, diabetes and leukemia etc. But on the other hand, some harmful events have also been observed in a number of investigations, from cellular level to fetal development. So exposure to static magnetic field might have dual effects on experimental rodent in various environments, viz. there are potentially therapeutic benefits, as well as adverse effects from it. The positive effect may relate to moderate intensities, while negative influence seems to be in connection with acute strong static magnetic fields. In addition, different orientations of static magnetic field exert different degrees of impact. Thus, the bioeffects of static magnetic field exposure on mice/rats depend on magnetic field intensities, durations and directions, though the exactly relationship between them is still vague. Further researches need to perform with appropriate methodologies, ingenious designs repeatedly and systemically, not only in animal models, but also in human volunteers and patients.  相似文献

In this study, a static magnetic field influence on development and viability in two different species, Drosophila melanogaster and Drosophila hydei, was investigated. Both species completed development (egg-adult), in and out of the static magnetic field induced by double horseshoe magnet. Treated vials with eggs were placed in the gap between magnetic poles (47 mm) and exposed to the average magnetic induction of 60 mT, while control ones were kept far enough from magnetic field source. We found that exposure to the static magnetic field reduced development time in both species, but statistical significance was found only for D. hydei. Furthermore, we found that the average viability of both Drosophila species exposed to the magnetic field was significantly weaker compared to control ones. These results indicate that 60 mT static magnetic field could be considered as a potential stressor, influencing on different levels the embryonic and post-embryonic development of individuals.  相似文献

The spontaneously active Br neuron from the brain-subesophageal ganglion complex of the garden snail Helix pomatia rhythmically generates regular bursts of action potentials with quiescent intervals accompanied by slow oscillations of membrane potential. We examined the involvement of the Na(+)/K(+) pump in modulating its bursting activity by applying a static magnetic field. Whole snail brains and Br neuron were exposed to the 10-mT static magnetic field for 15?min. Biochemical data showed that Na(+)/K(+)-ATPase activity increased almost twofold after exposure of snail brains to the static magnetic field. Similarly, (31)P NMR data revealed a trend of increasing ATP consumption and increase in intracellular pH mediated by the Na(+)/H(+) exchanger in snail brains exposed to the static magnetic field. Importantly, current clamp recordings from the Br neuron confirmed the increase in activity of the Na(+)/K(+) pump after exposure to the static magnetic field, as the magnitude of ouabain's effect measured on the membrane resting potential, action potential, and interspike interval duration was higher in neurons exposed to the magnetic field. Metabolic pathways through which the magnetic field influenced the Na(+)/K(+) pump could involve phosphorylation and dephosphorylation, as blocking these processes abolished the effect of the static magnetic field.  相似文献

Inhibition of angiogenesis is a major target in the fight against cancer and other diseases. Although the effects of static magnetic fields on cancer development and cell growth have been investigated, effects on angiogenesis have received no attention so far. In this study we report the effects on angiogenesis of exposure to 0.2 T static magnetic field. Angiogenesis was analyzed using the chick embryo chorioallantoic membrane assay. Exposure to 0.2 T static magnetic field was achieved by placing the eggs for 3 hr in the isocentre of the magnet of a sectorial magnetic resonance tomograph used in clinical practice. In sham exposed specimens treated with phosphate buffered saline (negative control), no significant vascular reaction was detectable; 3 hr exposure to 0.2 T static magnetic field did not affect the basal pattern of vascularization or chick embryo viability. Prostaglandin E1 and fetal calf serum elicited a strong angiogenic response in sham exposed eggs. This angiogenic response was significantly inhibited by 3 hr exposure to 0.2 T static magnetic field. These findings point to possible use of static magnetic field in inhibiting angiogenesis; this effect could be exploited for treatment of cancer and other diseases where excessive angiogenesis is involved.  相似文献

We present a hypothesis that the risk of childhood leukemia is related to exposure to specific combinations of static and extremely-low-frequency (ELF) magnetic fields. Laboratory data from calcium efflux and diatom mobility experiments were used with the gyromagnetic equation to predict combinations of 60 Hz and static magnetic fields hypothesized to enhance leukemia risk. The laboratory data predicted 19 bands of the static field magnitude with a bandwidth of 9.1 μT that, together with 60 Hz magnetic fields, are expected to have biological activity. We then assessed the association between this exposure metric and childhood leukemia using data from a case-control study in Los Angeles County. ELF and static magnetic fields were measured in the bedrooms of 124 cases determined from a tumor registry and 99 controls drawn from friends and random digit dialing. Among these subjects, 26 cases and 20 controls were exposed to static magnetic fields lying in the predicted bands of biological activity centered at 38.0 μT and 50.6 μT. Although no association was found for childhood leukemia in relation to measured ELF or static magnetic fields alone, an increasing trend of leukemia risk with measured ELF fields was found for subjects within these static field bands (P for trend = 0.041). The odds ratio (OR) was 3.3 [95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.4–30.5] for subjects exposed to static fields within the derived bands and to ELF magnetic field above 0.30 μT (compared to subjects exposed to static fields outside the bands and ELF magnetic fields below 0.07 μT). When the 60 Hz magnetic fields were assessed according to the Wertheimer-Leeper code for wiring configurations, leukemia risks were again greater with the hypothesized exposure conditions (OR = 9.2 for very high current configurations within the static field bands: 95% CI = 1.3–64.6). Although the risk estimates are based on limited magnetic field measurements for a small number of subjects, these findings suggest that the risk of childhood leukemia may be related to the combined effects of the static and ELF magnetic fields. Further tests of the hypothesis are proposed. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

The effects of weak static magnetic field on the organotypic tissue culture of the rat cerebral cortex, liver, and spleen have been investigated. Exposure to a 200 μT static magnetic field induces tissue development, leading to the intensification of regeneration processes compared to the control explants.  相似文献

The chemotaxis of human peripheral phagocytes, neutrophils and monocytes was examined in a strong static magnetic field (0.317+/-0.012 Tesla). The chemotaxis of the suspension of purified neutrophils and monocytes was tested in the Boyden chamber using C5a as a chemotactic signal. The chambers were placed into a temperature regulated (36.6 degrees C) equipment producing a strong static magnetic field (0.317 Tesla) for 60 minutes. The movement of cells proceeded into a nitrocellulose membrane toward the north-pole of the magnet, i.e. in the direction of the Earth's gravitational pull. The C5a induced chemotaxis of human neutrophils decreased significantly in the strong static magnetic field. Monocytes were not significantly effected. The strong static magnetic field decreased the chemotactic movement of neutrophils and this phenomenon may have implications when humans are exposed to magnetic resonance imaging for extended periods of time.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of a high-strength magnetic field produced by a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) apparatus on oxidative stress. The effects of a 1.5 T static magnetic field on the total antioxidant capacity (TAC), total oxidant status (TOS) and oxidative stress index (OSI) in male subjects were investigated. In this study, 33 male volunteers were exposed to a 1.5 T static magnetic field for a short time and the TAC, TOS and OSI of each subject were determined. Magnetic field exposure was provided using a magnetic resonance apparatus; radiofrequency was not applied. Blood samples were taken from subjects and TAC, TOS and OSI values were measured using the methods of Erel. TAC showed a significant increase in post-exposures compared to pre-exposures to the magnetic field (p < 0.05). OSI and TOS showed a significant decrease in post-exposures compared to pre-exposures to a 1.5 T magnetic field (for each of two, p < 0.01). The 1.5 T static magnetic field used in the MRI apparatus did not yield a negative effect; on the contrary, it produced the positive effect of decreasing oxidative stress in men following short-term exposure.  相似文献

The investigation was performed to evaluate the influence of the static magnetic field on oxidative stress in Vicia faba cultivated in soil from high background natural radioactivity in Iran. Soil samples were collected from Ramsar, Iran where the annual radiation absorbed dose from background radiation is substantially higher than 20 mSv/year. The soil samples were then divided into 2 separate groups including high and low natural radioactivity. The plants were continuously exposed to static magnetic field of 15 mT for 8 days, each 8h/day. The results showed that in the plants cultivated in soils with high background natural radioactivity and low background natural radioactivity the activity of antioxidant enzymes as well as flavonoid content were lower than those of the control. Treatment of plants with static magnetic field showed similar results in terms of lowering of antioxidant defense system and increase of peroxidation of membrane lipids. Accumulation of ROS also resulted in chromosomal aberration and DNA damage. This phenomenon was more pronounced when a combination of natural radiation and treatment with static magnetic field was applied. The results suggest that exposure to static magnetic field causes accumulation of reactive oxygen species in V. faba and natural radioactivity of soil exaggerates oxidative stress.  相似文献

The effect of a high-intensity static magnetic field on peripheral nerve regeneration is evaluated in rat sciatic nerve. Forty-four rats underwent sciatic nerve repair using polyethylene nerve guides. Postoperatively, the animals were exposed to a 1-tesla magnetic field for 12 hours per day for 4 weeks with appropriate controls. Our results demonstrate that a 1-tesla static magnetic field has no statistically significant effect on nerve regeneration as determined by myelinated axon counts and electrophysiologic studies. Also, the specific orientation of the sciatic nerve with respect to the magnetic field has no influence on axonal growth or nerve conduction. Periods of restraint of 12 hours per day for 4 weeks significantly inhibit weight gain but have no effect on peripheral nerve regeneration.  相似文献

Potential health effects of static magnetic fields have received far less attention than, for example, power frequency or radiofrequency fields. Static fields are found in certain occupational settings, e.g. in the aluminium and chloralkali industries, in arc-welding processes, and certain railways systems. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for medical diagnosis is another source. This paper summarizes the epidemiological evidence of static magnetic field exposure and long-term health effects. There are only a few epidemiological studies available, and the majority of these have focused on cancer risks. There are some reports on reproductive outcomes, and sporadic studies of other outcomes. Overall, few occupational studies have focused specifically on effects of static magnetic field exposure, and exposure assessment have consequently been poor or non-existent. Results from studies that have estimated static magnetic field exposure have not indicated any increased cancer risks, but they are generally based on small numbers of cases and crude exposure assessment. Control of confounding has been limited, and it is likely that the “healthy worker” effect have influenced the results. A few studies have reported results on reproductive outcomes among aluminium workers and MRI operators, but limitations in study designs prevent conclusions. A problem in epidemiological studies of static magnetic fields is that workers in exposed occupations are also exposed to a wide variety of other potentially harmful agents, including some known carcinogens. In conclusion, the available evidence from epidemiological studies is not sufficient to draw any conclusions about potential health effects of static magnetic field exposure.  相似文献

The activity of large dorsomedial protocerebral A2' neurosecretory neurons were investigated in late pupae of Tenebrio molitor L, which were exposed to a static magnetic field of 320 mT. Experimental groups were C: the control group which was kept at 5 meters from the magnet; CMF: pupae which were reared in control conditions and sacrificed on the eighth day of pupal stage (parents were kept in a magnetic field); and MF: pupae kept in a permanent magnetic field for eight days. Our results indicate the effects of a static magnetic field on the cytological characteristics and activity of large A2' neurosecretory neurons of Tenebrio molitor pupae.  相似文献

The effects of static and 50 Hz magnetic fields on cytochrome-C oxidase activity were investigated in vitro by strictly controlled, simultaneous polarographic measurements of the enzyme's high- and low-affinity redox reaction. Cytochrome-C oxidase was isolated from beef heart. Control experiments were carried out in the ambient geomagnetic and 50 Hz magnetic fields at respective flux densities of 45 and 1.8 μT. The experimentally applied fields, static and time-varying, were generated by Helmholtz coils at flux densities between 50 μT and 100 mT. Exposures were timed to act either on the combined enzyme-substrate interchange or directly on the enzyme's electron and proton translo-cations. Significant changes as high as 90% of the overall cytochrome-C oxidase activity resulted during exposure (1) to a static magnetic field at 300 μT or 10 mT in the high-affinity range, and (2) to a 50 Hz magnetic field at 10 or 50 mT in the low-affinity range. No changes were observed at other flux densities. After exposure to a change-inducing, static or time-varying field, normal activity returned. © 1993 Wiley-Liss. Inc.  相似文献

The exposure to a static magnetic field of 80+/-20 Gauss (8+/-2 mT) resulted in the inhibition of Serratia marcescens growth. Callus cell suspensions from Hordeum vulgare and Rubus fruticosus were also examined and only the former was found to be affected by the magnetic field, which induced a decreased viability. S. marcescens was shown to be virulent only toward H. vulgare and this virulence was reduced by the presence of the magnetic field. The modification of glutathione peroxidase activity under the different experimental conditions allowed us to speculate on the possibility of an oxidative-stress response of H. vulgare both to S. marcescens infection and magnetic field exposure. Since the control of microbial growth by physical agents is of interest for agriculture, medicine and food sciences, the investigation presented herein could serve as a starting point for future studies on the efficacy of static magnetic field as low-cost/easy-handling preservative agent.  相似文献
