SYNOPSIS. North America's Great Lakes have recently been invadedby two genetically and morphologically distinct species of Dreissena.The zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) became established inLake St. Clair of the Laurentian Great Lakes in 1986 and spreadthroughout eastern North America. The second dreissenid, termedthe quagga mussel, has been identified as Dreissena bugensisAndrusov, 1897. The quagga occurs in the Dnieper River drainageof Ukraine and now in the lower Great Lakes of North America.In the Dnieper River, populations of D. polymorpha have beenlargely replaced by D. bugensis; anecdotal evidence indicatesthat similar trends may be occurring in the lower LaurentianGreat Lakes. Dreissena bugensis occurs as deep as 130 m in theGreat Lakes, but in Ukraine is known from only 0–28 m.Dreissena bugensis is more abundant than D. polymorpha in deeperwaters in Dneiper River reservoirs. The conclusion that NorthAmerican quagga mussels have a lower thermal maximum than zebramussels is not supported by observations made of populationsin Ukraine. In the Dnieper River drainage, quagga mussels areless tolerant of salinity than zebra mussels, yet both dreissenidshave acclimated to salinities higher than North American populations;eventual colonization into estuarine and coastal areas of NorthAmerica cannot be ignored.  相似文献

Three marine phytoplankton species (Skeletonema costatum, Olisthodiscusluteus andGonyaulax tamarensis) were grown in batch culturesat 15°C and a 14:10 L:D cycle at irradiance levels rangingfrom 5 to 450 µEinst m–2 s–1. At each irradiance,during exponential growth, concurrent measurements were madeof cell division, carbon-specific growth rate, photosyntheticperformance (both O2 and POC production), dark respiration,and cellular composition in terms of C, N and chlorophyll a.The results indicate that the three species were similar withrespect to chemical composition, C:N (atomic) = 6.9 ±0.4, photo-synthetic quotient, 1.43 ± 0.09, and photosyntheticefficiency, 2.3 ±0.1 x 10–3 µmol O2 (µgChl a)–1 h–1 (µEinst m–2 s–1)–1.Differences in maximum growth rate varied as the –0.24power of cell carbon. Differences in growth efficiency, werebest explained by a power function of Chl a:C at µ = 0.Compensation intensities, ranged from 1.1 µEinst m–2s–1 for S. costatum to 35 forG. tamarensis and were foundto be a linear function of the maintenance respiration rate.The results indicate that interspecific differences in the µ–Irelationship can be adequately explained in terms of just threeparameters: cell carbon at maximum growth rate, the C:Chl aratio (at the limit as growth approaches zero) and the respirationrate at zero growth rate. SYNOPSIS. Since the discovery of the zebra mussel, Dreissenapolymorpha, in the Great Lakes in 1988 comparisons have beenmade with mussel populations in Europe and the former SovietUnion. These comparisons include: Population dynamics, growthand mortality rates, ecological tolerances and requirements,dispersal rates and patterns, and ecological impacts. NorthAmerican studies, mostly on the zebra mussel and a few on asecond introduced species, the quagga mussel, Dreissena bugensis,have revealed some similarities and some differences. To dateit appears that North American populations of zebra musselsare similar to European populations in their basic biologicalcharacteristics, population growth and mortality rates, anddispersal mechanisms and rates. Relative to European populationsdifferences have been demonstrated for: (1) individual growthrates; (2) life spans; (3) calcium and pH tolerances and requirements;(4) potential distribution limits; and (5) population densitiesof veligers and adults. In addition, studies on the occurrenceof the two dreissenid species in the Great Lakes are showingdifferences in their modes of life, depth distributions, andgrowth rates. As both species spread throughout North America,comparisons between species and waterbodies will enhance ourability to more effectively control these troublesome species.  相似文献

The goals of this study were to determine rates of ingestionand fecal pellet release, and their variability, for individualplanktonic copepods over extended periods of time (>20 min).Ingestions and rejections of individual cells of the diatomThalassiosira eccentrica by adult females of the calanoid Paracalanusaculeatus were directly quantified by observing individual copepodscontinuously at cell concentrations ranging from 0.1 toli mm3l–1.Average ingestion rates increased with increasing food concentration,but were not significantly different between 0.3 and 1.0 mm3l–1(9.8 and 32.7 µg Cl–1) of T.eccentrica. Rates ofcell rejections were low and similar at 0.1 and 0.3, but weresignificantly higher at 1.0 mm3 l–1. The coefficientsof variation for average ingestion rates of individual copepodshardly differed between food concentrations, ranging from 17to 22%, and were close to those for average fecal pellet releaseintervals which ranged from 15 to 21%. A comparison betweenindividuals at each food concentration found no significantdifferences at 1.0; at 0.1 and 0.3 mm3l–1, respectively,ingestion rates of four out of five females did not differ significantlyfrom each other. Average intervals between fecal pellet releaseswere similar at 0.3 and 1.0 mm3l–1 of T.eccentrica, butsignificantly longer at 0.1 mm3 l–1. Fecal pellet releaseintervals between individuals were significantly different ateach food concentration; these significant differences wereattributed to rather narrow ranges of pellet release intervalsof each individual female. Fixed-depth subthermocline phytoplankton production estimateswere compared to variable-depth estimates calculated along thesimulated trajectory of an internal wave. The mean of 5000 MonteCarlo simulations, varying wave phase and amplitude, was notsignificantly different than the fixed-depth estimate for averageLake Michigan internal waves. Differences were significant,however, for wave amplitudes >5 m but only at some depths.Differences between the two estimates were related to differencesin irradiance received and the portion of the photosynthesisirradiance(P-I) curve controlling production. Oscillating communitiesalways receive more irradiance than fixed-depth communitiesand the magnitude of this increase is related to the extinctioncoefficient and the amplitude of the internal waves. Productionwas also estimated along an individual isotherm trajectory (isotherm-derived)and compared to fixed-depth production. Larger differences betweenthese isotherm-derived and fixed-depth estimates were notedin some cases and were related to differences in the mean isothermdepth and the sampled (fixed) depth. Ballast water moved by transoceanic vessels has been recognized globally as a predominant vector for the introduction of aquatic nonindigenous species (NIS). In contrast, domestic ships operating within confined geographic areas have been viewed as low risk for invasions, and are exempt from regulation in consequence. We examined if the St. Lawrence River could serve as a source of NIS for the Laurentian Great Lakes by surveying ballast water carried by domestic vessels and comparing biological composition in predominant St. Lawrence River—Great Lakes port-pairs in order to determine the likelihood that NIS could be transported to, and survive in, the Great Lakes. Thirteen potential invaders were sampled from ballast water, while 26 taxa sampled from St. Lawrence River ports are not reported from the Great Lakes. The majority of NIS recorded in samples are marine species with low potential for survival in the Great Lakes, however two euryhaline species (copepod Oithona similis, and amphipod Gammarus palustris) and two taxa reported from brackish waters (copepod Microsetella norvegica and decapod Cancer irroratus) may pose a risk for invasion. In addition, four marine NIS were collected in freshwater samples indicating that at least a subset of marine species have potential as new invaders to the Great Lakes. Based on results from this study, the ports of Montreal, Sorel, Tracy and Trois Rivières appear to pose the highest risk for new ballast-mediated NIS from the St. Lawrence River to the Great Lakes.  相似文献

Pyke, K. A. and Leech, R. M. 1987. Cellular levels of ribulose1,5 bisphosphate carboxylase and chloroplast compartment sizein wheat mesophyll cells.—J. exp. Bot. 38: 1949–1956. The amount of the photosynthetic enzyme ribulose 1,5 bisphosphatecarboxylase (RUBISCO),as determined in mesophyll cells in primarywheat leaves was related to the size of the chloroplast compartmentwithin the cell for wheat species of three ploidy levels. Asimilar comparison was made for several genotypes of the hexaploidbreadwheat Triticum aestivum. Estimation of total chloroplastvolume per mesophyll cell was made assuming chloroplasts tobe oblate spheroid in shape. A significant correlation was found between the amount of RUBISCOper cell and the total chloroplast volume per cell for diploid,tetraploid and hexaploid wheat species. A significant correlationbetween cellular RUBISCO level and total chloroplast volumeper cell was also observed for a range of genotypes of the hexaploidT. aestivum but these genotypes of T. aestivutn accumulate agreater amount of RUBISCO per unit chloroplast volume than doany other wheat species. For these genotypes of T. aestivumthe stromal concentration of RUBISCO was estimated at 0·5mol m–3 with a ribulose Msphosphate binding site concentrationof 4·0 mol m–3. These results are discussed with respect to a gene dosage hypothesisto explain the accumulation of RUBISCO in leaf mesophyll cells. Fraction I protein crystals were obtained by a simple methodfrom four additional species in addition to seven species ofNicotiana previously reported and from Solanum melongena. Crystalswere obtained neither from several other genera of the Solanacealnor from N. debneyi, but 14C protein from the latter co-crystallizedwith N. tabacum Fraction I protein. Co-crystallization did notoccur with 14C proteins from species of Tagetes, Allium, Beta,Brassica and Hyocyamus whose Fraction I proteins were evidentlytoo different in their quaternary structures to occupy the samecrystal lattice with N. tabacum protein. Fraction I proteinsfrom N. gossei and N. excelsior differed in solubility as afunction of the NaCl concentration. The two proteins were alikein the isoelectric point of the three primary peptides composingthe large subunit, but differed in the isoelectric point ofone out of four primary peptides of the small subunit; thisdifference was also consistent with a difference in trypticpeptide fingerprints. Proteins from N. tabacum and N. glaucadiffered both in the composition of their large and small subunitsbut did not differ in solubility. However, by changing the compositionof the small subunit without changing the large subunit, thesolubility of each protein was changed. The change in smallsubunit composition could be achieved by isolating proteinsfrom the reciprocal F1 hybrids of N. tabacum ? Cladoceran composition and diel horizontal migration were studiedin 2, 10 and 25 m diameter macrophyte exclosures establishedin the littoral zone of shallow Lake Stigsholm, Denmark. Theexclosures were protected from waterfowl grazing, but open tofish. The macrophyte community cornprized Potwnogeton pectinatus,Potamogeton pusillus and Callitriche hemaphroditica. Cladoceranswere sampled randomly every third hour inside and outside themacrophyte exclosures during a 24 h period. In the 2m exclosure,the pelagic species Ceriodaphnia spp. and Bosmina spp. dominatedduring the day, mean density being as high as 3430 indiv. l–1During the night, density decreased to 10–20% of the daytimedensity thus indicating diel horizontal migration. In the 10and 25 m exciosures, the daytime mean density of Ceriodaphniaspp. was 865 and 202 indiv. l–1, respectively, and didnot decrease at night. In contrast to the pelagic species, thedensity of macrophyte-associated species tended to be higherin the 10 and 25 m exclosure than in the 2 m exclosure. In thedaytime, Eurycercus lamellatus density in the 2, 10 and 25 rnmacrophyte exclosures was 7, 28 and 16 indiv. l–1 respectively,while that of Simocephalus vetulus was 11, 171 and 92 mdiv.l–1, respectively. There was no thy-night difference inthe density of macrophyte-associated species. We conclude thatcladoceran community composition varies with macrophyte bedsize, and that the edge zone between the bed and open wateris an important daytime refuge for potentially migrating pelagiccladocerans.  相似文献

The efflux kinetics of 22Na and 36Cl from 48 h pre-loaded Rhizophoramangle and Avicennia germinans mangrove seedling roots grownin low salinity conditions have been documented. Estimates ofthe percent isotope distributed throughout the whole plant,the uptake rates, the amounts calculated to be present in theroot cell compartments, and the rate constants and half-timesof efflux were made. Little to no 22Na or 36Cl was noted asbeing distributed to leaf tissue in the red mangrove, Rhizophoramangle, substantiating its characterization as a non-secreting,salt excluding species. Significantly greater net uptake ratesfor Na and Cl were observed for the black mangrove, Avicenniagerminans, a non-excluding, salt-secreting species. The typicalintracellular compartmentation found in higher plant root tissueswas noted to be present in these mangroves and the efflux kineticsclearly indicated that Na and Cl were handled differentiallyby these compartments and their membranes. Rhizophora manglerevealed greater apparent contents of Na than Cl in both thevacuolar and cytoplasmic phases (5.4 and 7.7 fold greater, respectively).The inverse was found for Avicennia germinans, with the apparentvacuolar compartment amount for Cl being 4.6 times greater thanthe Na amount and the cytoplasmic Cl amount was 1.5 times morethan Na contents. The rate constants of efflux showed a patternof significantly greater Na than Cl efflux from each respectivered mangrove compartment, while the black mangroves had a patternof greater efflux rates of Cl than Na in each compartment. Thehalf-times of efflux for Na from the black mangrove cytoplasmiccompartment were 3.5 times longer, while vacuolar half-timesof efflux were near unity for Na and Cl. At low nitrogen (N) supply, it is well known that rye has ahigher biomass production than wheat. This study investigateswhether these species differences can be explained by differencesin dry matter and nitrogen partitioning, specific leaf area,specific root length and net assimilation rate, which determineboth N acquisition and carbon assimilation during vegetativegrowth. Winter rye (Secale cereale L.), wheat (Triticum aestivumL.) and triticale (X Triticosecale) were grown in solution cultureat relative addition rates (RN) of nitrate-N supply rangingfrom 0.03–0.18 d-1and at non-limiting N supply under controlledconditions. The relative growth rate (RW) was closely equalto RNin the range 0.03–0.15 d-1. The maximalRW at non-limitingnitrate nutrition was approx. 0.18 d-1. The biomass allocationto the roots showed a considerable plasticity but did not differbetween species. There were no interspecific differences ineither net assimilation rate or specific leaf area. Higher accumulationof N in the plant, despite the same relative growth rate atnon-limiting N supplies, suggests that rye has a greater abilityto accumulate reserves of nitrogen. Rye had a higher specificroot length over a wide range of sub-optimal N rates than wheat,especially at extreme N deficiency (RN=0.03–0.06 d-1).Triticale had a similar specific root length as that of wheatbut had the ability to accumulate N to the same amount as ryeunder conditions of free N access. It is concluded that thebetter adaptation of rye to low N availability compared to wheatis related to higher specific root length in rye. Species-specific differences in the assimilation of atmosphericCO2 depends upon differences in the capacities for the biochemicalreactions that regulate the gas-exchange process. Quantifyingthese differences for more than a few species, however, hasproven difficult. Therefore, to understand better how speciesdiffer in their capacity for CO2 assimilation, a widely usedmodel, capable of partitioning limitations to the activity ofribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase-oxygenase, to the rateof ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate regeneration via electron transport,and to the rate of triose phosphate utilization was used toanalyse 164 previously published A/Ci, curves for 109 C3 plantspecies. Based on this analysis, the maximum rate of carboxylation,Vcmax, ranged from 6µmol m–2 s–1 for the coniferousspecies Picea abies to 194µmol m–2 s–1 forthe agricultural species Beta vulgaris, and averaged 64µmolm–2 s–1 across all species. The maximum rate ofelectron transport, Jmax, ranged from 17µmol m–2s–1 again for Picea abies to 372µmol m–2 s–1for the desert annual Malvastrum rotundifolium, and averaged134µmol m–2 s–1 across all species. A strongpositive correlation between Vcmax and Jmax indicated that theassimilation of CO2 was regulated in a co-ordinated manner bythese two component processes. Of the A/Ci curves analysed,23 showed either an insensitivity or reversed-sensitivity toincreasing CO2 concentration, indicating that CO2 assimilationwas limited by the utilization of triose phosphates. The rateof triose phosphate utilization ranged from 4·9 µmolm–2 s–1 for the tropical perennial Tabebuia roseato 20·1 µmol m–2 s–1 for the weedyannual Xanthium strumarium, and averaged 10·1 µmolm–2 s–1 across all species. Despite what at first glance would appear to be a wide rangeof estimates for the biochemical capacities that regulate CO2assimilation, separating these species-specific results intothose of broad plant categories revealed that Vcmax and Jmaxwere in general higher for herbaceous annuals than they werefor woody perennials. For annuals, Vcmax and Jmax averaged 75and 154 µmol m–2 s–1, while for perennialsthese same two parameters averaged only 44 and 97 µmolm2 s–1, respectively. Although these differencesbetween groups may be coincidental, such an observation pointsto differences between annuals and perennials in either theavailability or allocation of resources to the gas-exchangeprocess. The relative requirement of N and P (the optimum N:P ratio)by Dunaliella tertiolecta, Phaeodactylum tricornutum, Prymnesiumparvum and Thalassiosira pseudonana was studied under variouslight intensities and spectra. The ratio was determined as theratio of the minimum cell N and P concentrations (q0N and q0pwhen either nutrient was limiting. The ratio varied widely amongspecies; under light-saturation for growth (116 µEin m–2s–1 it ranged from 11.8 in D. tertiolecta to 36.6 in P.tricornutum. The ratio appeared to be higher at a sub-saturatingintensity (24 µEin m–2 s–1 in all except P.tricornutum, mainly because of higher qoN with little changein qoP. In T. pseudonana QoP also increased, resulting in aninsignificant change in the ratio. The ratio varied little withinthe range of saturation intensity. Light quality affected qoNand qoP as well as the ratio, and the pattern of change variedfrom species to species. The optimum ratio of individual specieswas linearly correlated to their qoN except in P. tricornutum.qoN for all species showed a linear correlation with cell proteinconcentrations irrespective of light conditions. The changeof optimum N:P ratios in the three species thus appears to berelated to changes in cell protein contents. The ratio of carbohydratesto protein remained constant regardless of light intensity orquality and was higher in P-limited cultures. We conclude thatchanges in light regime can strongly influence algal nutrientrequirements and species interrelationships by altering theoptimum cellular N:P ratio.  相似文献

The composition and positional distribution of fatty acids inmonogalactosyldiacylglycerol, digalactosyldiacylglycerol, phosphatidylglyceroland sulphoquinovosyldiacylglycerol from two cyanobacteria, Anacystisnidulans and Synechococcus sp. grown at 25°C have been determinedand compared with measurements of the phase separation temperaturesof the lipids. Only monogalactosyldiacylglycerol in Anacystisand sulphoquinovosyldiacylglycerol in Synechococcus showed phaseseparation temperatures above 0°C. The phase transitiontemperature of a sample of sulphoquinovosyldiacylglycerol containingover 90% of the dihexadecanoyl molecular species has been determinedto be 43°C for the Na+ salt and 38°C for the Mg++ salt. *Deceased. Germination, establishment and growth of Melica ciliata L.,an 'acidifuge' species of rocky habitats in Europe, were studiedexperimentally and related to chemical properties of the soilsolution, including pH, base cation composition, Al concentrationand speciation, and Mn concentration. M. ciliata failed to establishin acid leptite soil. However, it was able to grow in solutionat pH 3·6 and exhibited vigorous growth at pH 3·9,a typical soil solution pH of leptite sites, which Melica isunable to colonize. Higher concentrations of Mn than those measuredin any leptite soil solutions did not influence growth. Exposureto 0·037 mmol l-1 (1 mg l-1) of Al3+, a concentrationusually exceeded in the soil solution of leptite sites, severelyretarded root growth. Speciation technique applied to Al insoil solutions obtained by centrifugation demonstrated a closerelationship between H+ and Al concentrations and, in particular,between H+ and free ionic (quickly reacting) Al species. Soilsolution concentrations of free ionic Al proved to be < 0·002mmol l-1 in sites lacking Melica , but often > 0·10mmol l-1 in site lacking Metalica . The zooplankton community structure of 22 lakes with varyingacidity and fish biomass, located southwest of the mining andsmelting region of Rouyn/Noranda, Quebec, was examined in July1987. Lakes with dominant piscivorous fish communities couldbe discriminated from non-piscivorous communities using solelypH and Chaoborus abundance, demonstrating that modificationsin the zooplankton community occurred concurrently with changesin the fUh communities. Strong discontinuities in zooplanktonspecies distributions were discerned in lakes with pH values<5.3; abundance ranges for several species could be semi-quantitativelyrelated to lake morpho-metry or chemistry. Small shallow kettlelakes with elevated heat budgets had high biomasses of smallherbivorous organisms. The presence of >5 mg m–3 ofadvanced Chaoborus instars (III and IV) was associated withreduced microcrustacean biomass in many lakes, particularlythose with low fish biomass. There was little evidence for size-selectivepredation by fish in these oligotrophic lakes. Fish biomass/effortcould be semi-quantitatively related to the biomass of Leptodorakindtii and the ratio of adult Diaptomus nunutus to copepoditestage IV.  相似文献

Protonemata of Funaria hygrometrica grown in artificial mediacontaining different lead concentrations grow more slowly thancontrols and show a disturbance of polar growth, changed arrangementof chloroplasts, alterations of nucleus and septa position.Morphological effects are dose-dependent. At the lowest leadconcentration (10-6 M), only a delay in development was observed,but no cellular alterations, At 10-5 M Pb nuclear migration,cellular shape, size and position of plastids, were alteredand a variety of aberrant forms were present. At 10-4 M, besidesthese alterations, a drastic reduction of the protonemal system,high vacuolation and the growth of protonemal filaments fromleaves were evident. The highest concentration, (10-3 M), causeddeath. Patterns of protonemal development and cellular arrangementin lead-treated samples showed similarities as well as differences,if compared to alterations induced by colchicine. Indirect immunofluorescencedemonstrated a correlation between lead concentration and alterationof cytoskeletal organization (alterations similar to those inducedby colchicine). The data of chlorophyll amounts in diverse bio-communities arecompiled and discussed with reference to matter production. The chlorophyll amount in euphotic zone of lakes and oceanswas less than 1 g/m2, mostly less than 0.1 g/m2. In phytoplanktonblooms it was ca. 0.1–1 g/m2. Large values of 5–20g/m2 were obtained in the outdoor mass cultures of Chlorella,in which the high population density and chlorophyll contentof the alga were observed. In terrestrial higher plant communitiesthe chlorophyll amount (ca. 1–10 g/m2) was usually higherthan in aquatic phytoplankton communities. The largest (13.3g/m2) was obtained with an evergreen gallery forest in Thailand.The chlorophyll amount of desert bio-community could be expectedto be as high as that in water blooms. Uptake of the dinitroaniline herbicide oryzalin (3,5-dinitro-N4,N4-dipropylsulfamlamide) and its effect on root growth werestudied using 5 mm corn (Zea mays L.) and pea (Pisum sativum)root apices. Pea root growth was much less susceptible to oryzalinthan corn root growth. Uptake studies showed that pea root apicesalso accumulated much less [14C]oryzalin and had a lower bindingaffinity for this herbicide. [14C]oryzalin was not metabolizedin root apices from either species. Thus, the differential susceptibilityto oryzalin in the case of corn versus pea can be explained,at least in part, by differences in oryzalin uptake and accumulationby roots.
