Abstract

The aim of the study was to evaluate the As phytoextraction potential of four tree species: Acer pseudoplatanus L., Betula pendula Roth., Quercus robur L., and Ulmus laevis Pall. in light of their prospective use in the phytoremediation of arsenate [As(V)] contaminated soils. The content of nutritional elements: B, Ca, K, Mg, Na, Si, P, and S was also analyzed. The trees were grown for 1?month in hydroponic cultures (Knop medium) supplemented with As(V), (1?mM). The results showed that the highest As accumulation efficiency was characterized by B. pendula (BCF = 0.87) and Q. robur (BCF = 0.5). Betula pendula accumulated about 80% of As in its roots (TF = 0.22) whereas Q. robur accumulated more than 60% of As in its shoots (TF = 1.60). The other tree species accumulated significantly lower amounts of As, more than 60% of which collected in their shoots. As(V) phytoextraction led to a significantly lower level of P and S in the roots of all tested tree species. Betula pendula seems promising for phytostabilisation and Q. robur for phytoextraction of As(V) from contaminated soils. The obtained results confirm the accumulation and translocation of As(V), as well as the acquisition of nutritional elements by the selected tree species.  相似文献

This study continues our previous experiments intended to elucidate the role of sucrose in a figured wood formation in silver birch (Betula pendula Roth var. carelica). The purpose of the study was the investigation of the role of sucrose in the regulation of cell division in the cambial zone. Using an earlier-developed technique, sucrose solutions of different concentrations have been delivered into trunk tissues of silver birch. A microscopic analysis of samples collected 28 days after the beginning of the experiment has shown that an increased sucrose concentration in an exogenous solution causes an increase in the frequency of anticlinal cell divisions in the cambial zone. In the case of high sucrose concentrations (10 or 20%), the zone of anticlinal divisions is significantly wider than in variants with low sucrose concentrations, since anticlinal divisions are observed on both phloem and xylem sides and at a larger distance from rays. A comparison of the obtained results with the previous experiments shows that the increased frequency of anticlinal divisions in cambial cells observed in the case of application of 10 or 20% sucrose solutions coincides with an increased parenchymatization of tissues. A revealed localization of anticlinal divisions within the cambial zone indicates that, in the case of the exogenous sucrose uptake, the morphogenesis of conductive tissues in silver birch (Betula pendula Roth var. pendula) occurs in the same way as in Karelian birch (Betula pendula Roth var. carelica). Data presented in this paper agree with the earlier hypothesis that the formation of figured wood similar to that of Karelian birch occurs due to increased sucrose content in trunk tissues.  相似文献

Effects of ozone on the leaf anatomy and ultrastructure of fivebirch (Betula pendula Roth.) clones were studied during onegrowing season in open-field conditions. Cumulative ozone exposurewas 1·5 times higher than ambient. Ozone exposure decreasedtotal leaf thickness in one, ozone sensitive, clone. The effecton palisade spongy mesophyll thickness was clone-specific, whilethe amount of palisade intercellular space was reduced in allclones. A second effect was a change in the relative amountsof adaxial and abaxial epidermis. In palisade and spongy parenchymacells of all clones, ozone increased the number of irregularand spherical shaped chloroplasts, the electron density of chloroplaststroma, swelling and curling of thylakoids, translucency ofthe mitochondrial matrix and also the amount of cytoplasmiclipids. In the sensitive clone shorter chloroplasts and reducedamount of starch were observed in ozone-exposed plants, whilst,in the tolerant clone, the size of chloroplasts and the amountof starch were unaffected. Ozone effects on number, size andelectron density of plastoglobuli and vacuolar tannin were clone-dependent.At the ultrastructural level, the normal leaf ageing processprogressed at different rates in the birch clones. Wood degradation by two basidiomycetes, Fomitopsis pinicola and Laetiporus sulphureus was studied in one conifer and four broadleaved trees: Picea abies (Norway spruce), Acer pseudoplatanus (sycamore), Betula pendula (birch), Quercus robur (common oak) and Robinia pseudoacacia (robinia). Observations of birefringence under polarized light showed that in all hosts both brown rot fungi affected cells of the early wood before those of the late wood. Degradation of cellulose, as shown by the loss of birefringence, was apparent after 6 weeks in the cell wall of fibres and fibre tracheids, but even after 12 weeks, axial parenchyma showed no signs of degradation. The results indicate that both brown rot fungi cause higher weight losses in hosts (P. abies and B. pendula) with a small amount of parenchyma cells, whereas the lowest weight losses are associated with wood containing a high amount of parenchyma cells (Q. robur and R. pseudoacacia). Resistance of parenchyma cells to degradation by brown rot fungi appears to be related to the cell wall morphology of parenchyma cells and may also reflect a low co-evolutionary adaptation of brown rot fungi to the xylem of broadleaved trees.  相似文献

Major tree species are declining in many temperate forests due to changing disturbance regimes, including invasive pests and pathogens. We examined the interaction of secondary succession and Dutch elm disease in the Swedish temperate forest reserve Dalby Söderskog, based on five tree surveys made between 1909 and 2011. The forest is characterized by the coexistence of four major European tree species: wych elm (Ulmus glabra), European ash (Fraxinus excelsior), European beech (Fagus sylvatica) and pedunculate oak (Quercus robur). After protection of the forest in 1918, lack of disturbance mainly favoured elm, while the oak population declined due to mortality of old oaks and lack of regeneration. Dutch elm disease has caused high and continuous elm mortality since 1988. As a result, increased light availability at the forest floor favoured abundant regeneration of ash, beech, and lately also oak. The recent arrival of an invasive fungal pathogen causing ash dieback may once again change the course of succession. Open space emerging from loss of elm and ash in forest reserves may be used by reserve managers to favour oak regeneration and biodiversity of semi-open woodlands once lost during succession to closed forest. We conclude that winners and losers change places as an effect of invasive pathogens, resulting in unexpected successions and both losses and gains in valuable ecological niches and habitat structures in temperate broadleaf forests.  相似文献

Saplings of an ozone sensitive clone of birch (Betula pendulaRoth,KL-5-M) were well-watered or exposed to mild drought-stresscombined with ambient or elevated (1.5xthe ambient) ozone for11 weeks in open-field conditions in central Finland. Stomatalresponse, visible injury, chlorophyll and nutrient content,and changes in cellular anatomy and plant growth were studied.Drought stress alone, in ambient ozone, reduced stomatal densityand stomatal conductance. Drought stress and ozone effects wereadditive, reducing total leaf number, foliage area and starchformation in mesophyll cells. Drought stress and ozone effectswere additive, increasing the N concentration in the leaves,the thickness of the upper epidermal cell wall, the number ofpectinaceous projections of mesophyll cell walls, and the vacuolartannin-like depositions and phenolic droplets, regarded as signsof activated stress defence mechanisms. The increase in specificfoliage mass, cytoplasmic lipids (younger leaves), and a condensedappearance of the upper epidermal mucilaginous layer were causedby both drought and ozone, but were not additive. The resultsshow that combined drought stress contributed to birch responsesto 1.5xcurrent ambient ozone concentrations, corresponding tocritical-level ozone exposure. Comparative ultrastructural analysis of the conducting and non-conducting phloem cells in the common straight-grained silver birch (Betula pendula var. pendula) and the Karelian birch (B. pendula var. carelica) with abnormal patterned wood was carried out, leading to the conclusion that there is an elevated sucrose content in the conducting phloem of the Karelian birch. A connection between sucrose levels and formation of abnormalities in the development of conducting tissues in the Karelian birch trunk was surmised. Experiments in which exogenous sucrose was applied to the silver birch trunk tissues have demonstrated the effects of different sucrose concentrations (0 g L−1, 10 g L−1, 25 g L−1, 50 g L−1, 100 g L−1) on the formation of xylem and phloem structural elements, and they yielded the types of tissue development that correspond to the abnormal tissue development in the Karelian birch trunk.  相似文献

Phytostabilization aims to reduce environmental and health risks arising from contaminated soil. To be economically attractive, plants used for phytostabilization should produce valuable biomass. This study investigated the biomass production and metal allocation to foliage and wood of willow (Salix viminalis L.), poplar (Populus monviso), birch (Betula pendula), and oak (Quercus robur) on five different soils contaminated with trace elements (TE), with varying high concentrations of Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb as well as an uncontaminated control soil. In the treatment soils, the biomass was reduced in all species except oak. There was a significant negative correlation between biomass and foliar Cd and Zn concentrations, reaching up to 15 mg Cd kg?1 and 2000 mg Zn kg ?1 in willow leaves. Lead was the only TE with higher wood than foliage concentrations. The highest Pb accumulation occurred in birch with up to 135 mg kg ?1 in wood and 78 mg kg ?1 in foliage. Birch could be suitable for phytostabilization of soils with high Cd and Zn but low Pb concentrations, while poplars and willows could be used to stabilise soils with high Cu and Pb and low Zn and Cd concentrations.  相似文献

Potassium and free polyamine concentrations in the leaves of silver birch (Betula pendula Roth) and downy birch (Betula pubescens Ehrh) were followed during three successive growing seasons 1996, 1997 and 1998 in order to define K deficiency levels.The highest foliar K concentrations were found in June. In August, the K concentrations were lower and remained quite stable in Betula pendula but varied in Betula pubescens. In addition to a common diamine, putrescine, and the polyamines, spermidine and spermine, also a less common diamine and polyamine, 1,3-diaminopropane and norspermidine were found in the birch leaves. The accumulation of both diamines, putrescine and 1,3-diaminopropane, was used to define the critical levels of K nutrition in birch leaves. Foliar K concentrations below 7–8 mg g –1 DW were found to correlate with the accumulation of diamines at most sampling dates.  相似文献

Micronutrient concentrations in foliage and stemwood (including bark) of six European tree species (Betula pendula Roth., Quercus robur L., Fraxinus excelsior L., Fagus sylvatica L., Tilia cordata Mill. and Picea abies (L.) Karst.) planted on the same type of soil at six sites in three different countries were studied. Micronutrient concentrations in foliage were considerably higher than in stemwood for all elements and species studied, except for Fe in spruce. Interspecies comparisons revealed significant differences in concentrations both in foliar and stemwood biomass, as well as in stemwood:foliage nutrient ratios. Lime foliage showed a considerably higher concentration of B than all other species, while the stemwood concentration of this element was highest in ash. Mn concentration in both foliar and stemwood biomass of ash was extremely low compared with concentrations in other species. Birch stemwood showed nearly double the level of Zn in other species at all sites. Zn concentrations in the birch foliage were also higher than in other species, with the exception of the Lithuanian sites, which showed lower EDTA-extractable Zn concentrations in the soils. The concentration of Cu was lowest in spruce foliage, while Cu concentrations in stemwood were similar in all species. It was concluded that species-related differences in microelement nutrition must be taken into account when evaluating the nutrient status of common European forest tree species, and when using them as bio-indicators of the effects of environmental pollution.  相似文献

The photosynthetic responses of eight tree and shrub speciesto simulated sunflecks was measured in the field. The net carbonexchange (NCE) of Corylus avellana and Ulmus glabra increasedwith irradiance up to the maximum irradiance of 230 µmolm–2 s–1. The NCE of Fraxinux excelsior, Hedera helixand the sun and shade forms of Rhododendron ponticum saturatedat about 120 µmol m–2 s–1 whereas the NCEof Ilex aquifolium, Daphne laureola and Fagus sylvatica hadeffectively saturated at 27 µmol m–2 s–1. In all cases the quantum efficiency of NCE could be predictedfrom measurements of chlorophyll fluorescence and the maximumvalue for NCE from measurements of stomatal conductance. Therelationships were combined into a model for predicting NCE/irradiancecharacteristics. The effect of exogenous nitrate on the sucrose-metabolizing enzyme activities—sucrose synthase (SS) and apoplastic invertase (ApInv)—in the xylem and phloem of the silver (Betula pendula Roth var. pendula) and Karelian (B. pendula var. carelica) birches (the latter is well known for its abnormal, patterned wood) has been studied. A stable correlation between the enzyme activities and deviations in the growth and development of stem vascular tissues during cambial growth has been demonstrated. Formation of the birch wood with a common structure is associated with high SS activity. In this case, the reaction yields UDP glucose, which is utilized mainly for synthesis of the cell wall components of vessels and fiber tracheids. As for the Karelian birch, the SS activity in the xylem formation zone is decreased, which complies with a higher sucrose level in the tissue. The excess sucrose is released into the apoplast to be cleaved by ApInv. The resulting hexoses induce storage metabolism, thereby increasing the amount of storage substances and the share of storage parenchyma cells in the xylem. As a result, the Karelian birch wood acquires large inclusions in the parenchyma, which render a characteristic pattern. A change in the ratio of SS to ApInv activities underlies a great variety in the degree of wood patterning observed in Karelian birch trees. In the common silver birch, the nitrate application increases the sucrose utilization via SS pathway, which results in an increase in wood growth. In the Karelian birch xylem, nitrates lead to a decrease in both the SS (a decrease in wood growth) and ApInv (a decrease in the amount of parenchyma, i.e., normalization of the wood structure). The sucrose metabolizing in the xylem decreases on the background of an increase in its utilization in the phloem, where both enzyme activities elevate. It is assumed that the fact that the Karelian birch distribution range is limited by rich soils can be determined by a shift from intensive apoplastic sucrose utilization zone towards the phloem caused by high doses of nitrogen nutrition.  相似文献

  • 3 Leaf thickness, tannin concentrations and leaf toughness were greater, and water content lower, in leaves from exposed areas of the canopy than from shaded ones.
  • 4 R.ulmi feeds selectively on the contents of the palisade mesophyll cells, and therefore was assumed to ingest the highest available levels of tannins.

1 The feeding preference of the adult pine weevil Hylobius abietis (L.) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) for Betula pendula Roth was studied in no‐choice and paired‐choice feeding experiments. 2 In the first no‐choice test, large quantities of silver birch bark in Petri dishes were consumed; on average, the daily consumption of each weevil was 67 mm2. 3 In the second no‐choice test, the weevils were offered 1‐year‐old silver birch seedlings for 6 days. Initially, the weevils fed mostly on the stem bases; later, they moved upward to feed on other parts of the stems. In addition to the main shoots, scars caused by gnawing were also found on leaf bases, blades, veins and petioles. Feeding resulted in the death of the main stems in 15% of the seedlings. 4 In the paired‐choice tests, the conifers were preferred to silver birch, even though a large amount of silver birch was also consumed in the presence of conifers. 5 In the paired‐choice tests, equal amounts of Scots pine and Norway spruce were always consumed. When hybrid aspen was offered, only small amounts were gnawed.  相似文献

In this article, the group chemical composition of individual parts of the bark of the Betula pendula (Betulaceae) birch was determined at different tree heights. The part of the bark in the examined birch was found to be 14%, including 5.4% of the outer bark and 8.6% of the inner bark. The content of main groups of substances (cellulose, lignin, extractive and mineral substances, free acids, and carbohydrates) was evaluated in the outer and inner bark depending on the stem height.  相似文献

The wood and bark structure of the distinctive southern African genera Polemanniopsis (including the newly described species P. namibensis) and Steganotaenia have been described. To allow for comparisons with the traditional subfamily Saniculoideae, a shrubby species of Eryngium from the Juan Fernández Islands was also studied. Polemanniopsis and Steganotaenia were recently considered as two closely related genera forming a new tribe Steganotaenieae of subfamily Saniculoideae (Apiaceae), whereas Eryngium is commonly recognized as a member of Saniculoideae. Eryngium differs significantly from the other two genera in the smaller size of intervessel pits, sclerification and radial dilatation in collapsed secondary phloem, the absence of crystals in the phelloderm cells and the occurrence of druse crystals in secondary phloem ray cells. Steganotaenia and Polemanniopsis share features, including the presence of marginal axial parenchyma, the occurrence of radial secretory canals in secondary xylem, dilatation of the secondary phloem by axial parenchyma stretching, cortical periderm initiation and the presence of chambered phelloderm cells containing druse crystals. These characters (especially the occurrence of chambered crystalliferous cells in phelloderm, which has not yet been reported for Apiaceae) support both the monophyly and the isolated position of the Steganotaeniae. No reliable synapomorphic features could be found to support a relationship with Saniculoideae. Steganotaenia is remarkable in the presence of axial secretory canals in the phelloderm: these structures have not yet been found in the periderm of any member of Apiales. Transmission electron micrographs revealed that a substantialpart of the guard cell wall of both Quercus robur L. and Populusnigra ‘italica’ L. was either free of cuticle orcovered with a greatly reduced cuticular layer. In Quercus thestructure of the guard cell was such that the area of limitedcuticular development would be exposed to the evaporating powerof the atmosphere even when the stomata were closed. Lanthanumstaining confirmed that this area might be an important siteof evaporation. A similar evaporation site was identified inthe guard cell wall of Pinus sylvestris L. Light micrographsrevealed that this area could also be exposed on the outsideof the leaf when the stomata were closed. It appears that guardcell orientation with respect to the epidermal plane dependsupon epidermal turgor. Changes in orientation of the guard cellcoupled with the exact location of the cuticle-free area inthe guard cell wall may explain the nature of the stomatal responseof individual species to changing VPD and the effect of othervariables, e.g. water deficit, on this response. In leaves of birch (Betula pendula Roth), changes in the content of total sulphur and its inorganic and organic forms were determined in relation to the decreasing air-pollution load (SO2) in the air-polluted Krusne hory mountains and the Decin sandstone highlands in 1995, 1998, 2001 and 2004. Results have shown that birch is able to use considerable amounts of sulphur taken through leaves from air-pollution load. Birch responds fast to changes in air-pollution load by fall in the content of total and inorganic forms of sulphur in leaves.  相似文献

The morphological, biochemical, and physiological characteristics of silver birch (Betula pendula Roth), curly birch (B. pendula Roth var. carelica), and downy birch (B. pubescens Ehrh.) at early stages of ontogenesis in natural conditions were investigated. Some intra- and interspecific peculiarities of the morphophysiological properties were determined. Priority development of the underground mass for the seedlings of curly birch and that of the aboveground mass for the seedlings of silver birch and downy birch were found. The leaf of curly birch is developed more actively as compared with those in the other two species under equal potential possibility of the growth of their leaves by elongation. A high similarity of the mineral composition (C, N, P, K) of different forms and species of birches was demonstrated. For silver birch the maximum values of the stomatal conductance, rate of photosynthesis, and transpiration under similar atmospheric and soil conditions were obtained. In downy birch we found a higher efficiency of water use. The highest values of the maximum rate of ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase carboxylation were found in curly birch. This may serve as an indicator of its shade tolerance, as compared with silver birch and downy birch.  相似文献
