Electrohoretically detectable enetic variation for 29 kinds of blood protein encoded by 33 loci was analyzed for 78 Asian eletants (Elephas maximus) which were collected from its four local populations: Sri Lanka, Souti India, Thailand and Nepal. Elehants in Sri Lanka are classified into the subspecies E.m. maximus, and those from the other tlree localities into the subspecies E. m. indicus. Six variable loci were detected, and one of them, the tetrazolium oxidase locus, was observed to show a complete allele substitution between the subspecies. Average heterozgosity within local populations were in a range of 0.0152 ? 0.0303. Whereas the Nei's genetic distance among three local populations of the subspecies indicus were 0.0013 ? 0.0031, the distance between the subspecies indicus and maximus were 0.0328 ? 0.0370, indicating that the two subspecies were well differentiated genetically.  相似文献

  • 1 Hipposideros turpis is traditionally known as a species composed of three subspecies, H. t. turpis, H. t. alongensis and H. t. pendleburyi, distributed disjunctly in south‐west Japan, north‐east Vietnam and south‐west Thailand, respectively. Prior to the present study, the systematic status of forms within the species remained unclear.
  • 2 Using morphological (external, bacular, cranial and dental characters), genetic and echolocation data, we demonstrate that turpis, alongensis and pendleburyi represent three distinct species, and that these species are endemic to Japan, Vietnam and Thailand, respectively. They are very distinct genetically and do not even form a monophyletic group.
  • 3 We also prove that H. alongensis is composed of two subspecies, H. a. alongensis and H. a. sungi. The latter subspecies is described as new to science. To date, H. a. alongensis appears to be restricted to the Cat Ba Island of Cat Ba National Park, west Ha Long Bay, whereas H. a. sungi ssp. nov. is known from three localities in mainland northeast Vietnam. These two subspecies are distinguished by body size, molecular data and the frequency of the constant‐frequency component of their echolocation signals.

Cochemiea pondii subsp. maritima is illustrated, the species and all three subspecies described, each provided with a full synonymy, statements on distribution, habitat and ecology, etymology, phenology, and conservation status. A commentary is given on the re‐acceptance of Cochemiea, separated from Mammillaria. Cultivation notes are provided; the species, and in particular subspecies maritima, is far from common in cultivation and not widely available. We analyze the population systematics of Asiatic cobras in Indochina, China and the Andaman Islands by means of comparative sequencing of the cytochrome oxidase subunit I gene of the mitochondrial DNA molecule and multivariate analysis of morphological characters. Canonical variate analysis and mtDNA sequence information reveal that the cobras of this region comprise four distinct species: Naja atra from China and northern Vietnam, Naja kaouthia from Burma, central Thailand, Cambodia and southern Vietnam, Naja siamensis from Thailand, Cambodia and southern Vietnam, and Naja sagittifera from the Andaman Islands. The subspecies N. kaouthia suphanensis Nutaphand 1986 shows no mtDNA sequence difference from typical N. kaouthia from central Thailand, and multivariate analysis does not reveal differences in general phenotypic profile; the subspecies is therefore synonymised with Naja kaouthia. The cytochrome oxidase subunit I gene, little used in molecular taxonomy, is shown to be well suited for studies at the species level, as it shows taxonomically useful levels of interspecific divergence but low levels of intraspecific variation; this is particularly relevant for studies of rare species, where sample size is a problem. The combination of multivariate morphometrics and molecular systematics can be particularly powerful in resolving systematic problems in such cases.  相似文献

Comparative analysis was performed of morphological characters and coloration elements in goatfish of the genus Mullus from collections of the Zoological Museum (Moscow State University, Russian Academy of Sciences), on the basis of which individuals from Atlantic waters off the coasts of western Africa were identified as M. argentinae. Brief characteristics of all valid species of the genus are presented; the main diagnostic characters include: ratio between the length of the barbels and pectoral fins, number of pyloric caeca, and the presence of a dark spot (or stripe) in the upper part of dorsal fin. The Mediterranean populations of M. surmuletus are separated as a special subspecies M. surmuletus fuscatus, and M. argentinae from eastern Atlantic is described as a new subspecies M. argentinae africanus.  相似文献

The genusCycas is revised for Thailand. Ten species are enumerated, five of them described as new (C. chamaoensis, C. clivicola, C. litoralis, C. nongnoochiae, C. tansachana), with one new subspecies (C. clivicola subsp.lutea). The species are placed within an infrageneric classification previously outlined. Distributions of the taxa are mapped, eight of the species are illustrated, and a key to species is provided. Previous records ofC. circinalis andC. rumphii from Thailand (here not regarded as indigenous in Thailand) are discussed.  相似文献

Twenty-five strains of Lactococcus lactis subspecies lactis and subspecies cremoris obtained from dairy industry and environmental collections were examined by 16S RNA automated ribotyping profiles and site-specific PCR (S-PCR). By automated ribotyping, the majority of strains were classified in accordance with phenotypic characterization, with the exception of one lactis (220) and two cremoris (BO32 and 140) strains. A complete differentiation of subspecies lactis and cremoris in agreement with conventional phenotypic methods was achieved by S-PCR with a set of site-specific primer pairs (PR1, RM4, and F3) designed particularly from a deletion region found in subspecies cremoris, but not in lactis. Therefore, S-PCR with primers (PR1, RM4, and F3) is a rapid and very sensitive method for the distinction of lactis and cremoris subspecies in dairy production. Aims To produce representative aggregate maps of plant collection locations in Thailand and discuss their impact on biogeographical studies in Thailand and the surrounding region. Location Thailand. Methods A representative data set comprising 6593 plant specimen records for Thailand has been assembled. The data set contains ± all known collections for fifteen representative plant families and further records for another 104. All records are localized to Changwat (province), 6441 to at least quarter degree square. Results Analysis shows that the spread of collecting activity in Thailand is markedly uneven; 20% of collections come from a single Changwat (Chiang Mai) and 53% of Changwat have fifty or fewer collections. The distribution of collections by Changwat and by quarter degree square is erratic with most squares and Changwat having few collections, both in proportionate and absolute terms. Some of the most densely forested Changwats and squares appear undercollected. Distribution maps for common, easily recognized tree species in the genus Syzygium show distributional gaps. Conclusions Thailand is defined as an undercollected country. Even within the few well‐collected quarter degree squares the spread of collecting is still poor; almost all collections being localized to one of three mountain ranges or their foothills. There are many gaps in collecting activity which make impossible a straightforward interpretation of biogeographical pattern. It is argued that targeted collecting activity is needed, that assembly of this type of data set is therefore essential and that our data set and its interpretation is a model for all countries in the region.  相似文献

A study of species diversity of Anopheles mosquitoes, biting patterns, and seasonal abundance of important mosquito vectors was conducted in two villages of Chang Island, Trat Province, in eastern Thailand, one located along the coast and the other in the low hills of the central interior of the island. Of 5,399 captured female anophelines, 70.25% belong to the subgenus Cellia and remaining specimens to the subgenus Anopheles. Five important putative malaria vectors were molecularly identified, including Anopheles epiroticus, Anopheles dirus, Anopheles sawadwongporni, Anopheles maculatus, and Anopheles minimus. Anopheles epiroticus was the most commonly collected species in the coastal site, whereas An. dirus was found to be most abundant in the forest‐hill site. From both locations, a greater number of mosquitoes was collected during the dry season compared to the wet. Anopheles epiroticus showed greater exophagic and zoophilic behavior with the highest blood feeding densities occurring between 18:00 and 19:00. In contrast, An. dirus demonstrated an activity peak between midnight and 01:00. We conclude that An. epiroticus and An. dirus, in coastal and inland areas, respectively, appear to be the most epidemiologically important malaria vectors on Chang Island. As no studies of vector competency specific to Chang Island have been conducted, our conclusions that these two species play a primary role in malaria transmission are based on evidence from other localities in Thailand and mainland Southeast Asia. This information serves as a basis for designing improved vector control programs that target specific species, and if integrated with other interventions could result in the elimination of malaria transmission on the island.  相似文献

Cultures derived from ascospores of Hypocrea lixii (= H. nigricans, H. lentiformis) produced the morphological species Trichoderma harzianum in pure culture. Trichoderma harzianum, the most commonly found species of the genus, is also one of the most species frequently used in biocontrol of plant pathogens. It has not been connected previously to a teleomorph. The connection was confirmed by DNA sequence analysis. Similar to the anamorph, the teleomorph collections have a wide geographic distribution. Described in the 19th century, Hypocrea lixii is epitypified by a collection from Thailand.  相似文献

Morphology is not a reliable specific indicator in nocturnal animals. Nevertheless, because species are genetically independent, appropriate analytic methods should reveal subtle and consistent morphological differences among them. Until recently, the diversity of living bush babies was underrated, and new species have been recognized on the basis of genetic, behavioral and soft tissue data. This has placed museum curators in a quandary as to how to sort their skin and skull collections according to the new specific designations.We conducted multivariate analyses of 6 morphologically similar pairs of bush baby taxa: Otolemur crassicaudatus and O. garnettii; Galagoides demidoffand G. thomasi; Galago gallarumand G. senegalensis; G. moholi and G. senegalensis; Euoticus elegantulus and E. pallidus, and Galagoides zanzibaricus and G. granti. We also compared subspecies within the taxa Otolemur crassicaudatus, O. garnettii, Galagoides demidoff, and Galago senegalensis. Five out of six species pairs were discriminated with a high level of reliability (88.5–99%) on the basis of 2–5 morphological variables. Only Euoticus elegantulus and E. pallidus did not show this pattern. All strongly supported specific discriminations share two features: (a) ear length is a highly significant factor, while the involvement of other characters is variable; (b) the greater the reliability of the discrimination, the fewer variables necessary to effect it. Euoticus elegantulus and E. pallidus behaved more like subspecies in the discrimination, while Galago senegalensis sspp. showed a pattern of variation similar to that in the specific analyses.  相似文献

Stump-tailed macaques (Macaca arctoides) exhibit significant intraspecific variation in pelage color. Based on their pelage color and geographical distribution, they are classified into 2 subspecies: northern bright brown Macaca arctoides arctoides and southern black Macaca arctoides melanota. However, studies on the natural population are extremely scarce, and researchers have occasionally questioned the subspecific classification. We quantitatively examined pelage color variation of Macaca arctoides in 3 free-ranging populations in Thailand. Pelage color difference between populations is significant. The population distributed south of the Isthmus of Kra showed wide intrapopulational variation, including bright brown, dark brown, and completely black, whereas the northern populations primarily had dark brown hairs. Thus, we conclude that one cannot classify the color variants into subspecies. Further, we hypothesize that the distinctive polymorphism in southern Thailand resulted from geographical isolation caused by the Pleistocene eustatic fluctuations and subsequent recovery of land connection and subsequent gene flow.  相似文献

We associated nymphs of Labiobaetis sp. G and Labiobaetis sp. Q from Japan with imagoes reared from nymphs in the field. Labiobaetis sp. G was identified with L. atrebatinus (Eaton 1870) based on characters of the reared male and female imagoes, nymphs, and eggs. We also synonymized a Taiwanese species, L. morus (Chang and Yang 1994), with L. atrebatinus. After further examination of the characters of male imagoes from Japan and Korea and nymphs from Japan and Taiwan, we found them to be correspondent to subspecies L. atrebatinus orientalis (Kluge 1983). Thus, we reerected the subspecific status of L. a. orientalis, although it had been considered not distinguishable from the nominotypical subspecies L. a. atrebatinus. Labiobaetis a. orientalis is distributed in the Russian Far East, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan. We identified Labiobaetis sp. Q with L. tricolor (Tshernova 1928) based on characters of the reared male and female imagoes, nymphs, and eggs. Labiobaetis tricolor was recorded from Japan for the first time.  相似文献

A literature review and the results of re-examination of collections of the earthworm Eisenia nordenskioldi are presented. Peculiarities of the geographic and habitat distribution, as well the ecology of the diploid subspecies E. n. pallida, originally described as a non-pigmented form of E. nordenskioldi, are analyzed. E. n. pallida inhabits mainly the south of Siberia and the Russian Far East, penetrating as far northwards as the forest-tundra zone along the valleys of large rivers. It is the most abundant in the low-mountain belt in dark coniferous forests, being the dominant form of Lumbricidae there, but it is quite rare above the timberline. The range of E. n. nordenskioldi, which can be found together with E. n. pallida in the south of the territories studied, is much wider, extending further to the north and including some Arctic islands. In addition, E. n. nordenskioldi is known from the eastern parts of European Russia. Both subspecies show high levels of resistance to unfavorable abiotic factors. Differences in the latitudinal and altitudinal distribution patterns of both subspecies of E. nordenskioldi are determined by their different morpho-ecological forms.  相似文献

Agama stellio picea Parker, 1935, was clearly defined as a black lizard, with the female dotted with orange, from the Transjordan lava desert. Three later collections confirmed this. The freshwater mussel Contradens contradens (Lea, 1838) occurs in most types of freshwater habitats throughout Thailand. The species shows extensive variation in shell morphology, which has led to the recognition of six different subspecies. In this study, the validity of these six subspecies plus one unknown species was assessed using an integrative taxonomic approach. Geometric morphometric analyses revealed significant differences in shell shapes among these six nominal morphological subspecies, although a considerable degree of overlap was detected in some groups. In contrast, the phylogenetic tree obtained from the concatenated data of mitochondrial COI and nuclear H3 gene sequences and molecular species delimitation analyses revealed only three supported clades. These clades are proposed herein as three distinct species, and strongly corresponded to the biogeographically disjunct drainage systems in Thailand. They consisted of the (i) C. contradens clade found in the Chao Phraya Basin and other rivers that drain into the Gulf of Thailand, (ii) C. crossei clade that is restricted to the Middle Mekong Basin, and (iii) a clade containing only the newly discovered species from Huai Luang River in the north-east of Thailand, which is described herein as Contradens rolfbrandti Jeratthitikul & Panha, sp. nov. Speciation among these congeners was probably caused by the restriction of gene flow due to the past geomorphology of the river systems. We collected several individuals of the Slaty-bellied Tesia Tesia olivea in the temperate rain forest of the sub-Himalayan region of northeastern Burma/Myanmar in February/March 2004 and March 2006. Subsequent comparison of these with T. olivea from northeastern India and northern Thailand revealed that while our northeastern Burma/Myanmar birds were similar to those from northeastern India, specimens of both populations were distinctly different from T. olivea from Chiang Mai Province of northern Thailand and northern Vietnam. Herein, we designate the latter populations as members of a new subspecies of T. olivea based on analyses of variations in morphometric characters, plumage, song, and mitochondrial (mt)DNA sequence.  相似文献
