Several neotropical orchid genera have been proposed as being sexually deceptive; however, this has been carefully tested in only a few cases. The genus Telipogon has long been assumed to be pollinated by male tachinid flies during pseudocopulatory events but no detailed confirmatory reports are available. Here, we have used an array of methods to elucidate the pollination mechanism in Telipogon peruvianus. The species presents flowers that have a mean floral longevity of 33 days and that are self-compatible, although spontaneous self-pollination does not occur. The flowers attract males of four tachinid species but only the males of an undescribed Eudejeania (Eudejeania aff. browni; Tachinidae) species are specific pollinators. Males visit the flowers during the first few hours of the day and the pollination success is very high (42% in one patch) compared with other sexually deceptive species. Female-seeking males are attracted to the flowers but do not attempt copulation with the flowers, as is usually described in sexually deceptive species. Nevertheless, morphological analysis and behavioural tests have shown an imperfect mimicry between flowers and females suggesting that the attractant stimulus is not based only on visual cues, as long thought. Challenging previous conclusions, our chemical analysis has confirmed that flowers of Telipogon release volatile compounds; however, the role of these volatiles in pollinator behaviour remains to be established. Pollinator behaviour and histological analyses indicate that Telipogon flowers possess scent-producing structures throughout the corolla. Our study provides the first confirmed case of (i) a sexually deceptive species in the Onciidinae, (ii) pollination by pre-copulatory behaviour and (iii) pollination by sexual deception involving tachinid flies.  相似文献

Telipogon peruvianus is a highly restricted, sexually deceptive, Neotropical orchid species, endemic to the southern Peruvian Andes. It is only known from two localities, which are affected by anthropogenic disturbance. Here, we investigated whether the restricted distribution of T. peruvianus has led to low genetic diversity and inbreeding, thus threatening its survival. We isolated 10 novel microsatellite loci specific for T. peruvianus (and that also cross-amplified in related species) from two adjacent populations. We found that genetic diversity within populations was only moderately reduced, along with some evidence of inbreeding. We found low levels of genetic differentiation, suggesting connectivity by pollen/seed flow between the two populations. Effective population size was comparable to the real number of flowering individuals in the populations and we did not detect the signature of recent bottlenecks. Taken together, these results show that, despite increasing anthropogenic pressure, the two investigated populations of T. peruvianus still host valuable genetic diversity that should be preserved through appropriate conservation strategies.  相似文献

A revision of the genus Talbotiella Baker f. (Caesalpinioideae: Leguminosae) is presented. Four species from Cameroon are described as new and a species of Hymenostegia, also from Cameroon, is transferred to Talbotiella bringing the number of species in Talbotiella to eight: T. bakossiensis Cheek, T. batesii Baker f., T. breteleri (Aubrév.) Mackinder & Wieringa, T. ebo Mackinder & Wieringa, T. eketensis Baker f., T. gentii Hutch. & Greenway, T. korupensis Mackinder & Wieringa and T. velutina Burgt & Wieringa. The centre of diversity is Cameroon where six of the eight species occur, five of which are country endemics. Vegetative characters that can be used to distinguish the species are provided in tabular form. Species distributions are mapped and all species are assessed for conservation status.  相似文献

Developmental heterochronies between the small‐sized Moenkhausia pittieri and the miniature Paracheirodon innesi were determined by describing and comparing external morphological development in both species. Despite being classified as miniature, P. innesi was larger and more developed in the flexion and post‐flexion larval stages than M. pittieri. Broader patterns within the Characidae suggest that body size reduction in P. innesi is tied to accelerated development and higher growth rate along with early maturation and precocious cessation of growth, which are characteristic of miniature species. Comments on adipose‐fin loss in Characidae as a consequence of developmental truncation are included.  相似文献

Five new species named Peliosanthes aperta, P. elegans, P. kenhillii, Tupistra densiflora and T. patula are described and illustrated. These species are very local in distribution and endemic to northern or southern Vietnam. Two other species, Ophiopogon ogisui and Peliosanthes griffithii, are recorded as new to the flora of Vietnam. A key to the species of Tupistra occurring in Indochina and its neighboring regions is also provided.  相似文献

I herein revise the genus Toxopoda Macquart of the Oriental and Australasian regions. A total of 16 species is discussed. Six new species are described: T. cavata sp. nov., T. angulata sp. nov., T. elephantina sp. nov., T. zuskai sp. nov., T. malayana sp. nov., and T. ozerovi sp. nov. The species T. contracta (Walker), T. viduata (Thomson) and T. simplex Iwasa, which can be easily confused with other species, are correctly redescribed and illustrated. Distributional notes and a key to the species of the Oriental and Australasian regions are provided.  相似文献

A new thecate, phototrophic, marine, sand‐dwelling dinoflagellate, Thecadinium mucosum Hoppenrath et Taylor sp. nov., is described from a culture isolated from Boundary Bay, British Columbia, Canada. It was illustrated with LM as well as SEM and TEM, and its position in the phylogenetic tree of dinoflagellates was investigated using molecular methods. Cells are asymmetrical, oval, laterally flattened, and strongly pigmented, with the plate formula P 3′ 1a 6′′ 7/8c 5 s 6′′′ 2′′′′. Thecal plates are smooth with scattered pores, and there is a distinctive anterior intercalary plate that could be involved in mucus secretion. Thecadinium inclinatum Balech (=Sabulodinium inclinatum (Balech) Saunders et Dodge), a thecate, marine, sand‐dwelling species that has been previously confused with what we now call T. mucosum, was also examined and illustrated through LM and SEM. New information on T. inclinatum is provided, including its plate formula P 3′ 6′′ 7c ?s 5′′′ 1p 1′′′′; we consider T. inclinatum to be related to most other Thecadinium species and not to Sabulodinium. Molecular phylogenetic analyses based on the small subunit ribosomal gene of T. mucosum, T. kofoidii (the type species of the genus), and T. dragescoi weakly support earlier suspicions based on morphology that T. dragescoi is not a member of Thecadinium. Tabulational patterns of the species suggest a relationship to the genus Amphidiniopsis.  相似文献
