Marine hydroids are commonly thought to be defended by stinging organelles called nematocysts that penetrate predator tissues and inject proteinaceous venoms, but not all hydroids possess these nematocysts. Although an increasing number of bioactive secondary metabolites have been isolated from marine hydroids, ecological roles of these compounds are poorly known. To test the hypothesis that nematocysts and noxious secondary metabolites represent alternative defenses against predation, we examined hydroids from North Carolina, United States for: (1) the palatability of whole polyps before and after nematocysts had been deactivated; (2) the palatability of their chemical extracts; and (3) their nutritional value in terms of organic content, protein content, and levels of refractory structural material (chitin). All hydroids were avoided by a generalist predator, the pinfish Lagodon rhomboides, compared with palatable control foods. Two of these (Halocordyle disticha and Tubularia crocea) became palatable after being treated with potassium chloride to discharge their nematocysts, suggesting that these species rely on nematocysts for defenses against predators. Chemical extracts from nematocyst-defended species had no effect on fish feeding. The four species that remained unpalatable after nematocysts had been discharged (Corydendrium parasiticum, Eudendrium carneum, Hydractinia symbiolongicarpus, Tridentata marginata) possessed chemical extracts that deterred feeding by pinfish. We have isolated and characterized the structures of the deterrent metabolites in two of these species. We found no differences in nutritional content or levels of chitin between nematocyst-defended and chemically defended species, and no evidence that either of these played a role in the rejection of hydroids as prey. Our results suggest that, among hydroids, chemical defenses may be at least as common as nematocyst-based defenses and that the two may represent largely alternative defensive strategies. The four hydroid species with deterrent extracts represent four families and both sub-orders of hydroids, suggesting that chemical defenses in this group may be widespread and have multiple origins. Migration of cnidoblasts has never been observed in Anthozoa. In contrast to hydrozoans, anthozoans are repeatedly reported to develop nematocysts locally without migration in the entoderm as well as in the ectoderm. The majority of the nematocysts studied in different Octocorallia species (Alcyonaria:Alcyonarium digitatum, Parerythropodium coralloides; Gorgonaria:Pseudopterogorgia aerosa; Pennatularia:Veretillum cynomorium) originate from the ectoderm of the scapus, where, however, no mature nematocysts occur. Cnidoblasts containing immature nematocysts accumulate in the distal scapus, from where they migrate singly like amoebae into the pinnulae of the tentacles. The nematocysts mature during migration, during which the capsular matrix becomes completely electron-translucent. Only in the oral disc, where few nematocysts occur, do they mature locally without migration. In the Octocorallia, nematocyst development and maturation takes places only in the ectoderm. Development of nematocysts has never been observed in the entoderm, nor in the pharynx; this demonstrates its entodermal origin. The entoderm contains only degenerated or phagocytized nematocysts. Contrary to hydrozoans, the mature anthozoan cnidocyte is rounded and has no processes to the mesogloea. Instead of a cnidocil it has a ciliary cone consisting of a normal flagellum, stereocilia and macrovilli. The cnidocyte is characterised by abundant electron-translucent cytoplasm and nematocyst-anchoring structures made up of cross-striated, collagen-like fibrillae and a fibrous basal ring. The position of the cross-striated fibrillae is distally similar to that of the supportive rods in hydrozoan cnidoblasts. The present study clearly demonstrates that structure and, possibly, function of an octocorallian cnidocyte is much simpler than that of a hydrozoan cnidocyte. On the other hand, cnidoblast migration, occurring in Hydrozoa as well in Octocorallia, turned out to be a much older phylogenetic character than was formerly believed.  相似文献

Jellyfish have an increasing impact on marine ecology. Cnidocysts bearing stinging cells afford, amongst others, prey capture and defence. Several different types of stinging capsules are found in one species and they are supposed to have specific functions, e.g. paralysing prey or adhering to it. Due to these assumed different roles of the capsules, it is suggested that toxins, which are contained in the capsules, differ in composition. Analysis of distinct types of nematocysts requires an appropriate method for the separation of the different types. Mixtures of types of nematocysts were obtained of two species of jellyfish, Aurelia aurita and Cyanea lamarckii, by maceration of the tissue. These mixtures were treated with a method called laser microdissection and pressure catapulting (LMPC). Optimized maceration methods, which were firstly introduced as a method for this purpose, in conjunction with optimized LMPC parameters lead to sufficient amounts of separated capsules of individual types for subsequent mass-spectrometric analyses. In case of A. aurita, the resulting mass spectra had some constituents in common, whereas in the overall pattern, the two distinct nematocyst types differed.  相似文献

The genus Paragymnodinium currently includes two species, P. shiwhaense and P. stigmaticum, that are characterized by mixotrophic nutrition and the possession of nematocysts. In this study, two new dinoflagellates belonging to this genus were described based on observations using LM, SEM, and TEM together with a molecular analysis. Cells of P. asymmetricum sp. nov., isolated from Nha Trang Beach, Vietnam, were 7.9–12.6 μm long and 4.7–9.0 μm wide. The species showed no evidence of feeding behavior and was able to sustain itself phototrophically. Paragymnodinium asymmetricum shared many features with P. shiwhaense, including presence of nematocysts, absence of an eyespot, and a planktonic lifestyle, but was clearly distinguished by the asymmetric shape of the hyposome, possession of a single chloroplast, and its nutritional mode. Cells of P. inerme sp. nov., isolated from Jogashima, Kanagawa Pref, Japan, were 15.3–23.7 μm long and 10.9–19.6 μm wide. This species also showed no evidence of feeding behavior. Paragymnodinium inerme was similar to cells of P. shiwhaense in shape and planktonic lifestyle, but its nutritional mode was different. The presence of incomplete nematocysts was also a unique feature. A phylogenetic analysis inferred from concatenated SSU and LSU rDNA sequences recovered the two dinoflagellates in a robust clade with Paragymnodinium spp., within the clade of Gymnodinium sensu stricto. This evidence, together with their morphological similarities, made it reasonable to conclude that these two dinoflagellates are new species of Paragymnodinium.  相似文献

在粤东梅州市桥溪村风水林设立样方,对其乔木层、灌木层和草本层植物进行调查,分析该风水林的群落特征及植物多样性。结果表明:该风水林3 000 m2的样方内,共有维管植物67种,隶属于37个科54个属,其中蕨类植物4科4属4种,裸子植物3科3属3种,被子植物30科47属60种。群落分布型以热带性分布占优势,热带属所占比例为74.08%。群落主要优势科为樟科、壳斗科、金缕梅科,优势种为细柄阿丁枫、刺毛杜鹃、鼠刺、阿丁枫。群落为常绿阔叶林,生活型以高位芽为主,占73.13%,其中又以中高位芽类型最多,约占43%。乔木层可分为三层,但以株高6~9.9 m的个体数为最多;藤本的比例高达17.91%。马尾松、杉木、细柄阿丁枫以及阿丁枫都缺少幼苗贮备,其种群属于衰退状态;而刺毛杜鹃、越南山龙眼幼苗贮备较充足,且刺毛杜鹃种群是典型的增长型种群。该风水林群落比周边其他群落有较高的物种丰富度、植物多样性,且物种分布较为均匀,种间相遇率较大。在群落不同层中,物种丰富度、Margalef指数、Shannon-Winer指数、Simpson指数、种间相遇机率乔木层均为最高,均匀度指数以灌木层较高,草本层的优势度指数最高。桥溪村风水林与粤东和华南地区的其他常绿阔叶林有很大的相似性。该风水林在粤东地区是一种典型的地带性森林,其树种组成是经过长时间对当地环境适应而形成的,具有稳定性和多功能性,对其研究可为华南地区的植物资源保护、生态公益林的保护和营造提供科学依据。  相似文献

The Cutosea represent a deep-branching lineage within the phylum Amoebozoa that is still relatively poorly explored. Currently, there are four cutosean representatives known – the monotypic genera Armaparvus, Idionectes, Sapocribrum, and Squamamoeba – with marked genetic distances. Idionectes vortex is the deepest-branching species and differs markedly from the other Cutosea in ecology, life history, and most importantly, in its ability to form a flagellated swarmer with an exceptional swimming mechanism. As far as we know, the other Cutosea lack flagella and rather represent small, marine amoebae with a characteristic cell coat. The present paper focuses on the amoeboid life history stage of the algivorous amoeboflagellate Idionectes vortex to provide data for a first in-depth comparison with other Cutosea and to document structural specialties. The amoeboid stage of Idionectes is mainly associated with the specific feeding process, that is, the interaction with algal prey cells and phagocytosis of protoplast material. Yet, the present data from time-lapse microscopy, cytochemical stainings, and electron microscopy demonstrate clear similarities with the other cutosean species concerning amoeboid locomotion and cell coat ultrastructure. Furthermore, Idionectes amoebae exhibit a well-developed microtubular cytoskeleton, and an unusual basal apparatus that seems to undergo marked changes during the life history of this exceptional amoebozoan.  相似文献

 We describe an evolutionary comparison of expression of the actin gene families of two congeneric sea urchins. Heliocidaris tuberculata develops indirectly via a planktonic feeding pluteus that forms a juvenile rudiment after a long period of larval development. H. erythrogramma is a direct developer that initiates formation of a juvenile rudiment immediately following gastrulation. The developmental expression of each actin isoform of both species was determined by in situ hybridization. The observed expression patterns are compared with known expression patterns in a related indirect-developing sea urchin, Strongylocentrotus purpuratus. Comparisons reveal unexpected patterns of conserved and divergent expression. Cytoplasmic actin, CyIII, is expressed in the aboral ectoderm cells of the indirect developers, but is an unexpressed pseudogene in H. erythrogramma, which lacks aboral ectoderm. This change is correlated with developmental mode. Two CyII actins are expressed in S. purpuratus, and one in H. erythrogramma, but no CyII is expressed in H. tuberculata despite its great developmental similarity to S. purpuratus. CyI expression differs slightly between Heliocidaris and Strongylocentrotus with more ectodermal expression in Heliocidaris. Evolutionary changes in actin gene expression reflect both evolution of developmental mode as well as a surprising flexibility in gene expression within a developmental mode. Ichthyoplankton of the Sea of Okhotsk from October to December 2007 comprised larvae and fry of eight fish species belonging to five families. The larvae of lord Hemilepidotus gilberti, white-spotted greenling Hexagrammos stelleri, and Atka mackerel Pleurogrammus monopterygius were the most widespread and numerous in the study period. Fish larvae from October to December 2007 were seined over the vast water area of the Sea of Okhotsk, maximum catches were made in waters of western Kamchatka. The food spectrum of larvae of five fish species (H. gilberti, Hexagrammos octogrammus, H. stelleri, P. monopterygius, and Bathymaster signatus) included approximately 20 plankters. Irrespective of species belonging, copepods Pseudocalanus minutus and Oithona similis, eggs and nauplii of copepods, as well as juveniles of pteropods were common food items for all fish. Larvae of all considered fish species in the Sea of Okhotsk fed mainly during the light hours of the day.  相似文献

Rhopilema nomadica—a recently discovered scyphomedusa in the eastern Mediterranean—is considered a lessepsian migrant. Its nematocysts were extracted from the scapular and mouth-arm tentacles and examined using light and electron microscopy techniques. The morphometric parameters of the nematocysts were measured before and after complete discharge. Three categories of nematocysts were identified: heterotrichous isorhiza haploneme, holotrichous isorhiza haploneme, and heterotrichous microbasic eurytele. The relative abundance of the nematocysts and their occurrence in tissues of the jellyfish were noted. A brief discussion concerning the classification of certain types of nematocysts is given. A comparison with the available data on other Rhopilema species revealed that the nematocyst categories of R. nomadica are more similar to those of the Atlantic R. verrilli than to those of the Western Pacific R. esculentum. Abstract. We examined the cnidomes (total complement of nematocysts) of medusae of the zooxanthellate and azooxanthellate jellyfishes Phyllorhiza punctata and Catostylus mosaicus (Rhizostomeae, Scyphozoa), and compared the assemblage of zooplankton captured on the oral arms of each species to determine whether differences in the types or amount of zooplankton captured were consistent with possible differences in the cnidomes. Cnidomes were described using light and scanning electron microscopy. Each species had a distinct cnidome and, in general, specimens of P. punctata appeared to have far fewer nematocysts than those of C. mosaicus. Four types of nematocysts were identified in medusae of C. mosaicus; 2 types of holotrichous isorhizae, rhopaloids, and birhopaloids. In C. mosaicus, the oral arms and bell margins possessed all of these types, but the cnidomes of the 2 regions differed in relative abundances and sizes of isorhizae and rhopaloids. Five types of nematocysts were identified in medusae of P. punctata, although not all types were found in all specimens. Round holotrichous isorhizae were found only in the bell, while oval holotrichous isorhizae, rhopaloids of 2 distinct size ranges, and birhopaloids were found in the bell and oral arms. Cnidomes of the bell and oral arms in specimens of P. punctata also differed in the relative abundance and sizes of oval isorhizae and rhopaloids. Although there were clear differences in the overall cnidomes and absolute abundances of nematocysts in each species, the oral arms (feeding appendages) of specimens of both C. mosaicus and P. punctata had similar types and relative abundances of nematocysts. Zooplankton sampled from the oral arms of each species showed that both species preyed predominantly on copepod nauplii and larvae of gastropods and bivalves. Medusae of C. mosaicus captured ~10 × more gastropod larvae and 5 × more bivalve larvae than those of P. punctata. Specimens of P. punctata captured approximately twice as many copepod nauplii as those of C. mosaicus. Differences in the relative abundance of types of zooplankton captured by each species could not be adequately explained by differences in the cnidomes of the oral arms.  相似文献

Radioiodine, given as the iodide, localized in protein-bound form in the ectoderm of Hydra fusca and H. littoralis. The radioiodine was shown by autoradiography to be: (1) diffusely distributed in the ectoderm over the gonads and (2) precisely localized in the apical cytoplasm of cnidoblasts that carry stenotele nematocysts. In this study the length–weight relationships of five fish species belonging to four families and five genera were analyzed from the streams of Maoershan National Forest Park in China. A total of 221 specimens were used to estimate the relationship parameters. These species (Lethenteron reissneri, Cobitis granoei, Misgurnus mohoity, Rhynchocypris percnurus and Perccottus glenii) had no previous estimate in FishBase.  相似文献

Laboratory-reared larvae of the sea anemone Urticina (= Tealia) crassicornis have been examined by electron microscopy prior to and following settlement on algal substrata. At 18 days postfertilization, the free-swimming planula larva measures about 600 μm long. A stomodaeal invagination occurs at the narrow end of the larva and connects with a solid mass of endoderm in the core region. The endoderm possesses septa with well-developed myonemes and is situated subjacent to a thin sheet of mesoglea. The uniformly ciliated ectoderm that constitutes the outer layer of the larva contains: (1) spirocysts, (2) nematocysts, (3) mucus, (4) three types of membrane-bound granules, (5) a basiepithelial nerve plexus, and (6) a few nongranular cells that may represent sensory neurons. Within several minutes after the introduction of the algal substratum, the planula characteristically directs its broadened aboral end toward the alga and secretes a refractile sheet of material. As the aboral end attaches to the substratum, the larva becomes noticeably shorter along its oral-aboral axis, presumably owing to the contractions of myonemes that are located within the endodermal septa. All three types of granules and the ectodermal mucoid substances are exocytosed during settlement, but spirocysts and nematocysts characteristically remain undischarged. Ovoid, PAS+ granules are believed to be at least partly responsible for adhesion, since these granules are concentrated at the aboral end prior to settlement and are somewhat similar in ultrastructure to putative viscid granules produced by other species. Contrary to a previous report based on light microscopy, no discrete sensory organ is evident in serial sections of the aboral ectoderm. The ability of planulae to detect suitable substrata appears to depend instead on sparsely distributed sensory cells that occur throughout the larval ectoderm.  相似文献

姑婆山紧邻南岭生物多样性保护优先区,孕育了丰富的生物资源。为了解该区域大型真菌物种多样性,该文采用随机踏查法对广西姑婆山自治区级自然保护区(以下简称姑婆山)及邻近地区大型真菌资源进行调查采集,并结合形态学和分子生物学方法进行物种鉴定。结果表明:(1)共发现348种大型真菌,隶属于2门6纲17目69科175属,其中包含食用菌40种、药用菌42种、毒菌7种。(2)对该区的物种组成分析表明,优势科为蘑菇科(Agaricaceae)、牛肝菌科(Boletaceae)、粉褶蕈科(Entolomataceae)和锈革菌科(Hymenochaetaceae)等9科;优势属为鹅膏属(Amanita)、靴耳属(Crepidotus)、毛皮伞属(Crinipellis)和粉褶蕈属(Entoloma)等11属。(3)共发现2个中国特有属,即脆孔菌属(Fragiliporia)和臧氏牛肝菌属(Zangia);11个中国特有种,即厚集毛菌(Coltricia crassa)、魏氏集毛菌(C.weii)、丛生粉褶蕈(Entoloma caespitosum)、极细粉褶蕈(E.praegracile)、近薄囊粉褶蕈...  相似文献

The Phlegraean Fields Regional Park in southern Italy has an especially long history of human exploitation. For our ethnobotanical studies we interviewed 39 people native to the area and recorded 962 use-reports. For each species, we provide scientific and vernacular names, plant parts used, and preparation and administration processes. In all, 69 species belonging to 35 families were classified. The species most frequently mentioned were Citrus limon, Chamomilla recutita, Malva sylvestris, Parietaria judaica, Ficus carica, Foeniculum vulgare and Laurus nobilis. The commonest plant use recorded is medicinal, followed by culinary and domestic; for 26% of the species inventoried, more than one use was recorded. The present study confirms the persistence of traditional plant use in regions of central and southern Italy.  相似文献

We analyzed mycorrhizal types and dark septate endophyte (DSE) fungal associations in a shola vegetation of Western Ghats region, southern India. Plants belonging to 29 species of 19 families were assessed for mycorrhizal type and DSE fungal association. Five mycorrhizal classes were classified based on morphological traits: arbuscular, ecto-, ectendo-, ericoid-, and orchid mycorrhizas. Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) association was the most predominant mycorrhizal type, occurring in 16 plant species, followed by orchid (3 species), ericoid- (2 species), and ecto- and ectendomycorrhizas (1 species each). Mycorrhizal association is reported for the first time in 19 plant species. DSE fungal association was found in six plant species. Arum- and Paris-type AM morphology was found, respectively, in 10 and 5 plant species, with intermediate type recorded in one species. In this study, some new records on the morphological types of AM in some plant families were obtained. Further occurrence of ectendomycorrhizas in Pinus oocarpa and dark septate fungal association in Eleaocarpus munronii, Symplocos cochinchiensis, Daphniphyllum neilgherrense, Euodia roxburghiana, Syzygium arnottianum, and Syzygium montanum are reported for the first time. Roots of Berberis tinctoria, Mahonia leschenaultii (Berberidaceae), Elaeagnus latifolia (Elaeagnaceae), and Elaeocarpus oblongus (Elaeocarpaceae) lacked any fungal structures.  相似文献

In this study the length–weight relationships of nine fish species from Xingkai (Khanka) Lake in China belonging to three families and eight genera were analyzed. A total of 273 specimens were used to estimate the relationship parameters. Four of these species (Chanodichthys dabryi, Hemibarbus maculatus, Tachysurus fulvidraco and Cyprinus carpio haematopterus) had no previous estimations and one maximum length is new to science for inclusion in FishBase.  相似文献

A total of 36 species of benthic hydroids, belonging to nine families and 16 genera, were found in the hydroid collection gathered during the Brazilian Antarctic expeditions PROANTAR III and IV. Seven of the species were identified only to generic level. There is a clear dominance of the subclass Leptothecatae with 33 species. By far the most diversified family was the Sertulariidae, with 16 species (44%). Symplectoscyphus with eight species, including Symplectoscyphus magnificus sp. nov., is the most diversified genus. Almost 70% of the species diversity is restricted to just six genera (38%). Sixty-eight percent of the species is Antarctic endemics and 86% is restricted to Antarctic or Antarctic/sub-Antarctic waters. Eudendrium antarcticum and Amphisbetia operculata are recorded for the first time from Antarctic waters.  相似文献

We conducted 14 bird surveys in the Melincué saline lake from 1992 to 2002 (7 in winter and 7 in summer), and we detected 223,643 individuals belonging to 71 species from 17 families. The more abundant species were Fulica leucoptera, Larus maculipennis, Phoenicopterus chilensis, Plegadis chihi, Anas platalea, Himantopus mexicanus, and Rollandia rolland. Bird abundance was similar in winter and summer, whereas species composition differed between seasons. We recorded 65 species in summer and 59 in winter. P. chilensis and A. sibilatrix were more abundant in winter, whereas Ajaia ajaja, Phalacrocorax olivaceus, Ardea ibis, Sterna nilotica, Egretta thula, Mycteria americana, Charadrius collaris, A. versicolor, Calidris fuscicollis, and Ciconia maguari were more abundant in summer. Bird abundance in each survey was positively associated with the lake level. In summer surveys, the highest variation in species composition through the years was associated with water level fluctuations. Shorebirds predominated in those years with lower level, whereas the species that fed mainly on plants or vertebrates predominated in years with higher levels. Those species that fed on invertebrates (not shorebirds) and those that fed on invertebrates and plants predominated in years with intermediate level. The omnivorous species predominated in years of lower level. There were differences among transects in the proportion of different trophic groups. Short-term studies that do not take into account the particular dynamic of these systems may lead to erroneous generalisations. Thus, the long-term information of this study may be useful for management and conservation of species and system.  相似文献

Twelve species of brackish and freshwater ostracods were collected from the island of Yakushima in southern Japan. Six species, belonging to the genera Cypria, Dolerocypris, Stenocypris, Schellencandona and Paracypria, are new and are described herein. The genus Schellencandona is reported for the first time outside Europe. Although a wide range of apparently suitable habitats was sampled for ostracods across the island, all specimens were recovered from or near the coast; further inland yielded no ostracods. The freshwater habitats around the coast of the island consist of springs and rockpools at the top of the shore above most high tide levels.  相似文献
