The spotback skate Atlantoraja castelnaui (Arhynchobatidae) is a large and threatened skate species subjected to fishing pressure, endemic to the Southwest Atlantic that occurs from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to San Jorge Gulf, Argentina. The age, growth, age at maturity and the maximum intrinsic rate of population increase rmax of A. castelnaui were studied using 152 specimens collected from off Uruguay and north Argentina (35°–42° S), between June 2013 and February 2020. Vertebrae from 143 individuals were used for ageing (females: n = 83, size range 404–1300 mm total length, TL; males: n = 60, size range 400–1270 mm TL). Maximum ages determined for females and males were 30 and 28 years, respectively. To fit growth models, non-linear and Bayesian estimation approaches were considered. For the first approach, a set of four candidate growth (size-at-age) models were fitted: three-parameter von Bertalanffy, two-parameter von Bertalanffy with fixed L0, Gompertz and Logistic. In the second approach, von Bertalanffy, Gompertz and Logistic were fitted. For non-linear estimation, model selection indicated that the entire set of candidate growth models were supported by the data. The von Bertalanffy was selected as the best model for Bayesian estimation. There were no differences in growth between sexes. For the sexes combined, the von Bertalanffy growth model by Bayesian method was considered the most adequate to describe the growth of A. castelnaui (growth mean parameters ± S.D. : L = 1210.29 ± 40.68 mm; k = 0.12 ± 0.01 years−1; L0 = 179.20 ± 11.62 mm). The age at maturity was estimated at 16.21 and 14.04 years for females and males, respectively. The maximum intrinsic rate of population increase rmax was estimated as 0.252 years−1. Life-history traits and rmax provided in the present study suggest that this species has a relatively low productivity and may be vulnerable to an intense fishing pressure.  相似文献

Nonlinear growth models having a three- or four-parameter family were applied to individual body weight data of 5 male African green monkeys for estimating their growth patterns. Body weight was measured from birth to six years of age and 58 to 114 data items per monkey were collected. The average body weight at birth was 360g with the standard deviation of +/- 25g, 4.54 +/- 0.29 kg at five years of age, and 4.50 +/- 0.12 kg at six years of age at which point body weight was judged to have reached a plateau. Five growth models (Gompertz, Logistic, Richards, Bertalanffy and Brody) were applied to the growth data in this study. As a result, two (Gompertz and Logistic) of the five models were found applicable to all data from the five monkeys. However, the coefficient of determination (R2) obtained by application of the two models were not so large (0.919 +/- 0.05 in Gompertz, 0.889 +/- 0.01 in Logistic). Therefore the data were divided into two groups according to monkey age: the first group being from monkeys between birth and 2 years 10 months of age and the second group was from monkeys older than 2 years 10 months of age. The Gompertz model fitted best the data of the first group in four of the five animals (R2 = 0.982 +/- 0.011). The age at the inflexion point in the Gompertz model nearly corresponded to the age of weaning. The Logistic model was most suitable for the date of the second group in all five animals (R2 = 0.955 +/- 0.038).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Size, growth and sexual dimorphism of nine skull traits was studied in 300 East Greenland and 391 Svalbard polar bears (Ursus maritimus). Two traits were significantly larger in bears from East Greenland compared to Svalbard bears, and trait size was smaller after 1960 in five traits. For both localities and both age groups (subadult, adult), mean trait size values were higher in males than females (all: P < 0.05). Gompertz growth models showed trait size increasing with age in seven traits. Depending on the trait, males reached 95% asymptotic trait size at age 3–10, females at age 2–6. The females of both localities matured at approximately the same age, whereas the Svalbard males generally matured years later than their East Greenland peers. The differences found in the present study between the two polar bear subpopulations support the notion that East Greenland and Svalbard polar bears probably should be managed as separate units.

Nonlinear growth models having three or four parameter family were applied to individual weight data of female African green monkeys for estimating their growth pattern. The body weight was measured continuously from birth to six years of age with five female laboratory-bred monkeys. A total of 95 weight data were collected from each monkey. The average body weight was 330 g with the standard deviation of +/- 15 g at birth, and 2.71 +/- 0.33 kg at four years of age. The body weight of female African green monkeys was judged to reach a plateau after about four years of age. Five growth models (Gompertz, Logistic, Richards, Bertalanffy, Brody) were applied to these weight to age data. The most suitable coefficient of determination between growth data and growth model was obtained by the application of Gompertz equation. Three parameters of Gompertz equation, mature size (A), rate of maturing (K) and inflexion point (e-1 A) were analyzed in relation to age of menarche. Strong correlations between age of menarche and maturing rate, as well as between age of menarche and inflexion point were observed.  相似文献

This study describes the age structure and sex-specific growth patterns of Lahille's bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus gephyreus), a subspecies endemic to the Southwest Atlantic Ocean (SWAO). The ages of 120 animals collected in southern Brazil between 1976 and 2017 were determined. We found high frequencies of young animals, mostly males, with no sex bias among adults. A temporal change in the age structure of strandings was observed, and we conclude it is a consequence of increased bycatch rates of young dolphins after 2000. The oldest male and female were 27 and 44 years old, respectively, suggesting that females live longer than males in southern Brazil. Growth curve analysis using Gompertz and Laird-Gompertz growth models estimated asymptotic lengths of 316.5 cm for females and 351.6 cm for males, (reached around 13 and 18 years old, respectively), supporting sexual size dimorphism for the subspecies. A second growth pulse was identified for males. Our work highlights the benefit of long-term studies and contributes valuable information toward understanding the life history of Lahille's bottlenose dolphin. It will serve as baseline for future studies that seek to understand mortality patterns of bottlenose dolphins elsewhere and the effects of anthropogenic actions on the survival of these animals.  相似文献

The Alaska skate, Bathyraja parmifera, is the most abundant species of skate on the eastern Bering Sea shelf, accounting for over 90% of total skate biomass. However, little is known regarding the life history of this species despite its common occurrence as bycatch in several Bering Sea fisheries. This is the first study to focus on the age and growth of B. parmifera. From 2003 to 2005, more than one thousand specimens were collected by fisheries observers and on scientific groundfish surveys. Annual banding patterns in more than 500 thin sections of vertebral centra were examined for age determination. Caudal thorns were tested as a potentially non-lethal ageing structure. Annual band pair deposition was verified through edge and marginal increment analyses. A three-parameter von Bertalanffy growth function and a Gompertz growth function were fit to observed length-at-age data. Both models provided significant fits, although the Gompertz function best described the overall pattern of growth in both males and females, based upon statistical criteria and parameter estimates. Age and size at 50% maturity were 9 years and 92 cm TL for males and 10 years and 93 cm TL for females. The maximum observed ages for males and females were 15 years and 17 years, respectively. Estimates of natural mortality (M) ranged from 0.14 to 0.28, and were based on published relationships between M and longevity, age at maturity, and the von Bertalanffy growth coefficient. Due to these life history characteristics and a lack of long-term species-specific stock data, a conservative management approach would be appropriate for B. parmifera.  相似文献

The growth of bottlenose dolphins is described from observations made during a capture release programme that has operated in coastal waters of the eastern Gulf of Mexico from 1970 to the present. Measurements of standard length, girth and body mass were recorded from 47 female and 49 male dolphins, some captured as many as nine times. Ages were known from approximate birth dates or estimated from counts of dentinal growth layers. In all three measurements. females grew at a faster initial rate than males, but reached asymptotic size at an earlier age. This extended period of growth in males resulted in significant sexual dimorphism in length, girth and mass at physical maturity. The growth of both sexes was well described by three-parameter Gompertz models using either cross-sectional data or a mixture of longitudinal and cross-sectional data. There was considerable variation in size-at-age for both sexes in all year classes. Residuals of size measurements were used to derive measures of relative size for individual dolphins; most dolphins demonstrated little ontogenetic change in relative size. Body mass was adequately predicted by multiple regression equations that incorporated both length and girth as independent variables.  相似文献

Synopsis We determined age and growth, size at maturity, and fecundity for cownose rays, Rhinoptera bonasus, collected from the northern Gulf of Mexico. Vertebral age estimates ranged from 0+ to 18+ years for females and 0+ to 16+ years for males. Annual deposition of growth increments was verified with marginal increment analysis. Likelihood ratio tests indicated that the growth of the cownose ray was best described by a combined sexes Gompertz model. Median size at 50% maturity was determined to be 642 mm DW for males and 653 mm DW for females, or 4–5 years of age. Median pup size-at-birth was estimated to be 350 mm DW, with a gestation period of 11–12 months. In all cases, gravid females contained only one pup. Statistically significant differences were detected between growth curves for the Gulf of Mexico and the western Atlantic Ocean. Cownose rays in the Gulf of Mexico had lower estimates of DW and K, and a higher theoretical longevity than their conspecifics in the western Atlantic Ocean. Cownose rays in the Gulf of Mexico also attain maturity at a smaller size and earlier age than their counterparts in the western Atlantic Ocean.  相似文献

Synopsis The reproductive biology of three species of chaetodonts from One Tree Reef (southern GBR) is described by analysis of gonads and population structure. Reproductive biology is related to age by a capture-markrecapture study of growth. For Chaetodon rainfordi there was a significant habitat effect. On the reef slope, females outnumbered males by 5.6: 1 and both sexes became reproductively active by the age of 2 years. In the lagoon, no males were found and females were reproductively inactive. For C. plebius, males were essentially missing from all samples and no reproductively active females were found. For Chelmon rostratus (1 :1 sex ratio) some males had mature testes but there was no evidence of female reproductive activity. This species is likely to be gonochoristic, but the reproductive mode of the other two species remains ambiguous.  相似文献

Data on the relationships between body size and age were obtained for a sample of leopard toads Bufo pardalis from a breeding population of this species from the Cape Peninsula, South Africa. Age was determined by counting the number of lines of arrested growth in histological sections of a digit clipped from each individual. In males there was a positive, but weak, correlation (explaining only 18% of the variance) between body size and age, and in females no correlation at all existed between these two variables. Males which were successful in obtaining matings were not older than unsuccessful males. Age of males at the breeding site ranged from one to three years, whereas females ranged from two to six years old. This represents both the earliest age of reproduction, as well as the greatest difference in longevity between the sexes, documented for an anuran species.  相似文献

Survival analysis of three clones of Brachionus plicatilis (Rotifera)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Age-specific survival schedules of females from three genetically different clones of Brachionus plicatilis were analyzed at several environmental conditions in the laboratory.Lifespan showed the expected decrease with increasing temperature, but a general trend with salinity or genotype was not observed. Probability of death increased with age, as tested by polynomial regression analysis of the survival curve and using theoretical mortality distributions. Three two-parameter models (linear-exponential model, Weibull model, and Gompertz model) were fitted to the survival data. Fitting of these models to data was rather poor, but the Gompertz model and, to a lesser extent, the Weibull model fitted the data better than the linear-exponential model. Parameters obtained from the survival curve analyses were related to other demographic parameters. A significant relationship between the shape parameter of the Gompertz model and the cohort generation time was detected, suggesting, but not proving, an effect of reproductive effort on aging.  相似文献

The reproduction, development and growth of Akodon lindberghi were studied in captivity. The colony was derived from animals captured in Sim?o Pereira, Minas Gerais state, which represents a new area of geographical distribution known for this species. Twelve males and twelve females were crossed, producing 144 young in 53 litters. Post-partum oestrus was observed and gestation length was estimated in 23 days. Litter size ranged from 1 to 4 with a mean of 2.72 (SD = 0.97, n = 53) and modal size of 3. Sexual dimorphism was neither present in body mass at birth nor at weaning. There was a significant negative correlation between litter size and mass at birth or weaning. Permanent emergence of adult external appearance occurred at 15 days. Puberty for males and females was 43 and 42 days, respectively, and the first fecundation event for two females was recorded at 47 and 54 days of age. The weight growth was described by fitting a Gompertz model. No significant difference was found in any parameter of growth curves for males and females. Measurements (head-body, tail, hind foot and internal and external ear lengths) obtained for adult individuals also did not reveal the presence of sexual dimorphism.  相似文献

Fires strongly influence the ecology of reptiles and have both direct and indirect effects on population dynamics as they affect life history traits. Here, we examine the effects of fire on individual growth patterns and on the survival rates of a tortoise Testudo graeca population in south-eastern Spain. We compare the biometric data from recaptures 4 years before and after a fire which burned 31 % of our study area. The von Bertalanffy and Gompertz growth models best describe the individual growth patterns for males and females. In males, but not females, fire significantly decreased the time required to reach their asymptotic size (k parameter). However, adult survival analyses reveal that the local survival rates lowered for both sexes after fire. Our work evidences that the effects of fire can be complex and maintained over time, affecting different life history traits.  相似文献

Individual Viviparus georgianus from a New York population are iteroparous, maturing in their second year. Ovoviviparous females have a maximum lifespan 1 year longer than that of males (4 + versus 3+ years), though individuals of both sexes can be reproductively active for three consecutive years. Embryophores are carried over winter and released each spring. Female survivorship is positively size related, as is incremental growth within any year. Reproductive effort is age related, increasing from 5.3% for modal 2-year females to 79.7% for modal 4-year females. Reproduction is size limited in 2-year females, no females below 16 mm shell length were found containing broods. The lack of observable survivorship penalties related to reproduction may result from reproductive females have greater biomass and hence greater survivorship. Spat size is positively correlated with female age irrespective of female size, though brood numbers increase with maternal size and growth rates. Caged experiments have shown spat born early to older females grow fastest. Data presented indicate that the young of older females have greater expected lifetime fecundity and fitness. In this population, 3-year females produce approximately 50.0% of each new cohort, with 2-year and 4-year females producing 21.0% and 26.0% respectively. Matrix models of the natural population and modified hypothetical populations emphasize the importance of survivorship and early reproduction in such stable, age-structured populations.  相似文献

In this study, we have conducted kinetics and modelling studies ofCentella asiatica cell growth and substrate uptake, in an attempt to evaluate cell growth for a better understanding and control of the process. In our bioreactor cultivation experiment, we observed a growth rate of 0.18/day, a value only 20% higher than was seen in the shake flask cultivation trial. However, the observed maximum cell dry weight in the shake flask, 10.5 g/L, was 14% higher than was achieved in the bioreactor. Ninety seven percentage confidence was achieved via the fitting of three unstructured growth models; the Monod, Logistic, and Gompertz equations, to the cell growth data. The Monod equation adequately described cell growth in both cultures. The specific growth rate, however, was not effectively predicted with the Logistic and Gompertz equations, which resulted in deviations of up to 73 and 393%, respectively. These deviations in the Logistic and Gompertz models may be attributable to the fact that these models were developed for substrate-independent growth and fungi growth, respectively.  相似文献

Indonesia has the greatest reported chondrichthyan catches worldwide, with c.110,000 t caught annually. The pelagic thresher (Alopias pelagicus) and scalloped hammerhead (Sphryna lewini) together comprise about 25% of the total catches of sharks landed in Indonesia. Age and growth parameters were estimated for A. pelagicus and S. lewini from growth‐band counts of thin‐cut vertebral sections. Alopias pelagicus (n = 158) and S. lewini (n = 157) vertebrae were collected from three Indonesian fish markets over a 5 year period. A multi‐model analysis was used to estimate growth parameters for both species. The models of best fit for males and females for A. pelagicus was the three‐parameter logistic (L = 3169 mm LT, k = 0·2) and the two‐parameter von Bertalanffy models (L = 3281 mm LT, k = 0·12). Age at maturity was calculated to be 10·4 and 13·2 years for males and females, respectively, and these are the oldest estimated for this species. The samples of S. lewini were heavily biased towards females, and the model of best fit for males and females was the three‐parameter Gompertz (L = 2598 mm LT, k = 0·15) and the two‐parameter Gompertz (L = 2896 mm LT, k= 0·16). Age at maturity was calculated to be 8·9 and 13·2 years for males and females, respectively. Although numerous age and growth studies have previously been undertaken on S. lewini, few studies have been able to obtain adequate samples from all components of the population because adult females, adult males and juveniles often reside in different areas. For the first time, sex bias in this study was towards sexually mature females, which are commonly lacking in previous biological studies on S. lewini. Additionally, some of the oldest aged specimens and highest age at maturity for both species were observed in this study. Both species exhibit slow rates of growth and late age at maturity, highlighting the need for a re‐assessment of the relative resilience of these two globally threatened sharks at current high levels of fishing mortality throughout the eastern Indian Ocean.  相似文献

In dioecious plant species, males and females are thought to have dissimilar allocation patterns. Females are believed to invest more in reproduction and less in growth and maintenance than males. This differential investment between sexes could result in distinct growth patterns and contrasting survival rates, thereby affecting the sex ratio of a population and the age and size distribution of males and females, possibly leading to habitat segregation according to sex. These effects might become more apparent under particularly limiting conditions, such as in nutrient-deficient soils or in climatically stressed environments. To verify these predictions, growth patterns, microsite characteristics, and age and size distribution of male and female individuals were compared, and population sex ratio was determined in three populations of the dioecious shrub Juniperus communis var. depressa (Cupressaceae, Pinophyta) along a short latitudinal gradient on the eastern coast of Hudson Bay (Northern Québec, Canada). We found that the northernmost population had a male-biased sex ratio, but that the southernmost one had a higher proportion of females. Our results failed to reveal any significant differences in radial growth patterns, mean sensitivity, annual elongation of the main axis, and size and age frequency distribution between males and females in any population. Furthermore, there was no evidence of microhabitat segregation according to sex as indicated by the lack of differences in the physicochemical characteristics of the substrate under males and females. Clearly, the expected ecological consequences of a presumed greater investment of females in reproduction were not apparent even under the very stressful conditions prevailing on subarctic dunes. Many factors could reduce differences in the cost of reproduction between males and females, such as the number and quality of reproductive structures produced annually by individuals of each sex, the possible photosynthetic activity of the immature female cones, and the complexity of the source/sink relationship within individuals. Alternatively, there may be no differences between sexes in their reproductive investment.  相似文献

Age, body size, and growth patterns in the subtropical anuran Hyla annectans chuanxiensis from high (Dengchigou Protection Station) and low (Lingguan Town) elevations in Baoxing County of Sichuan province (China) were described using skeletochronology. Females were significantly older than males at the low-elevation site, but there was no significant difference between the sexes at the high-elevation site. Age at sexual maturity of both males and females was 2 years at the high-elevation site, whereas males matured at 1 year and females at 2 years at the low-elevation site. Males and females from the low-elevation population reached a maximum age of 3 and 4 years, respectively, whereas males and females from the high-elevation population reached a maximum age of 4 and 5 years, respectively. At both sites, females were significantly larger than males. Females and males from the high-elevation population were larger than individuals from the low-elevation population. When the effect of age was controlled, the differences in body size of the two populations were significant only for females. Von Bertalanffy growth curves indicated that the growth rates in males was greater than in females in both populations. They also showed that the growth of both sexes slowed at an earlier age in the low-elevation population than in the high-elevation population. The findings suggest that age is a major factor underlying body size patterns for both sexes, but that the elevation of the locality affects the body size of females.  相似文献

Vertebral band formations were used to define age and growth in three Neotrygon species caught regularly as by-catch in prawn trawl fisheries in north-east Australia. Centrum edge and marginal increment ratio analyses were used to validate annual band formations. Age estimates ranged from 1 to 18 years, with the von Bertalanffy growth function considered to have the best fit to Neotrygon picta (males, W(D∞) = 271 mm, k = 0·12; females, W(D∞) = 360·5 mm, k = 0·08) and Neotrygon kuhlii (males, W(D∞) = 438·6 mm, k = 0·08; females, W(D∞) = 440·6 mm, k = 0·08) disc width (W(D))-at-age data. The Gompertz growth function had the best fit to Neotrygon annotata W(D)-at-age data (males, W(D∞) = 230·4 mm, k = 0·20; females, W(D∞) = 265·5 mm, k = 0·31). Age at sexual maturity ranged from 3 to 6 years, with N. picta having the smallest size at birth (100 mm W(D)), smallest W(D) at 50% maturity (W(D50): male, 172 mm, female, 180·7 mm) and lowest age at sexual maturity (3-4 years). This study helps redefine and improve the accuracy of fisheries-based risk assessments for these small species with relatively conservative life-history variables.  相似文献
