The effects of biological treatments with PlantShield®, Prestop®, Quadra 136, RootShield®, and S33 (Rhodosporidium diobovatum) and chemical treatment with Decree® applied as a preventive or curative sprays on stem canker caused by Botrytis cinerea on tomato plants grown in sawdust were studied under near-commercial greenhouse conditions. Prestop® and Decree®, applied as preventive or curative sprays, PlantShield® applied as curative spray, and S33 and Q-136 applied as preventive or preventive plus one spray to wounded surface provided season-long protection from B. cinerea stem canker. These treatments also increased fruit yield and decreased the number of dead plants compared with the inoculated control.  相似文献

The arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi Glomus monosporum, G. vesiculiferum, G. deserticola, G. intraradices, G. mosseae, and two unidentified species were tested to determine their effect on plant growth and fruit production of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) cv. Trust inoculated with Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. radicis-lycopersici (FORL) under near-commercial greenhouse conditions. Inoculation with G. monosporum and G. mosseae significantly increased fruit yield and fruit number of tomato plants grown hydroponically in sawdust. Plant height and plant dry weight increased significantly when inoculated with G. monosporum and G. mosseae. Further, plants inoculated with G. monosporum and G. mosseae showed significantly lower FORL root infection than the untreated control plants.  相似文献

AIMS: Plant growth-promoting (PGP) activity of two Azospirillum strains and their effects on foliar and vascular bacterial diseases were evaluated on fresh market and cherry tomato. METHODS AND RESULTS: Tomato seeds were inoculated with A. brasilense Sp7 or Azospirillum sp. BNM-65. Four-week-old plants were challenge-inoculated with Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. michiganensis (bacterial canker) or with Xanthomonas campestris pv. vesicatoria (bacterial spot). Azospirillum-induced PGP was greater on cherry than on fresh-market tomato. Cherry tomato was more resistant to bacterial canker but more susceptible to bacterial spot than the fresh-market tomato. Canker severity was not affected by Azospirillum seed treatments. However, leaf- and plant-death were delayed on Azospirillum-treated plants compared with nontreated controls. Azospirillum increased the bacterial spot severity on cherry but not on fresh-market tomato. CONCLUSIONS: PGP was observed on both tomato genotypes, although growth effects were larger on cherry tomato. Also, Azospirillum treatments may alter tomato susceptibility to bacterial diseases. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: The interaction between PGP rhizobacteria like Azospirillum spp., not known to induce systemic resistance, with plant pathogens distantly located is frequently overlooked. This work demonstrates the importance of this kind of evaluation.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted to determine the effects of treatments on Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. michiganensis in vitro and on young seedlingsinoculated with the pathogen under greenhouseconditions. Lysozyme was bactericidal at 10 g/l concentration in vitro. Tomato plantstreated with lysozyme at 10 g/l and 100 g/lshowed significantly higher plant heightcompared with the inoculated control plants, and plants in these treatments were as tall asthose observed in untreated uninoculatedcontrol plants. Treatments with B. subtilis (Quadra 136) and Trichoderma harzianum (RootShield®), lysozyme, vermicompostea, Rhodosporidium diobovatum(S33), B. subtilis (Quadra 137) appliedas a spray at 0.3 g/l, 0.6 g/l, 10 g/l,concentrated, 1 × 109 CFU/ml, and 0.5 g/l,respectively, have the ability to prevent theincidence of bacterial canker of tomato plantscaused by C. michiganensis subsp.michiganensis under greenhouse conditions.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted to study the effect of moderately halophilic bacteria isolated from different Tunisian Sebkhas (hypersaline soils), on stem canker caused byBotrytis cinerea on tomato plants grown under greenhouse conditions. Treatments performed with moderately halophilic isolates ofBacillus subtilis J9 andHalomonas sp. K2-5 significantly reduced stem lesion expansion byB. cinerea on tomato plants under greenhouse conditions. The use of such bacteria may constitute an important alternative to synthetic fungicides, which failed to suppress the development of the fungal pathogen.  相似文献

Field experiments were conducted for 3 years from 2000 to 2002 to assess proportional crop yield differences obtained under conventional deficit irrigation (CDI) and partial root zone irrigation (PRI) practices, compared with full irrigation (FULL) where plant water requirements were fully met. The experimental crops included vegetables (tomato and pepper), field crops (maize and cotton) and citrus. The fruit yield of greenhouse‐grown tomato with FULL irrigation was higher than with PRI (7–22% lower) but was not significantly different. The PRI treatments had 7–10% additional tomato yield over CDI receiving the same amount of water. The yield of pepper, however, decreased in proportion to the level of irrigation deficit with no increase of irrigation water use efficiency (IWUE). No seed yield decrease was evident for cotton with the deficit treatments (PRI and CDI) compared with FULL irrigation. Similarly, the PRI treatment did not give any yield benefit for maize compared with CDI. The ranking of fruit yields of mandarin, FULL > PRI > CDI, was the same as that of other crops; however, the differences were not significant. Although the deficit treatments (PRI and CDI) had as high as 39% increase in IWUE, compared with FULL treatment, some adverse effects on fruit quality were evident such as smaller size of fruits under the deficit treatments.  相似文献

Mechanical inoculation of seedlings of 26 tomato cultivars with an attenuated strain of tomato aspermy virus (TAV-M, ATCC # PV361) resulted in development of only mild symptoms, which had largely disappeared by the time the infected plants had begun to set fruit. Yield trials revealed that plants inoculated with TAV-M when transplanted at the 6–8 leaf stage displayed no delay in fruit set and had yields only slightly less than uninoculated plants. Cross protection studies carried out in the greenhouse revealed that TAV-M has the potential to interfere with infection of tomato seedlings by a more severe TAV strain (ATCC # PV127). ‘Pik-Red’ seedlings inoculated with TAV-M showed a significant reduction in symptom expression when challenged with the Blencowe strain of TAV 21 days after the initial inoculation with TAV-M; interference was incomplete at 7 and 14 days.  相似文献

High volume sprays of dichlofluanid (0.1 % a.i.) reduced total fruit numbers but gave better control of Botrytis cinerea infections of tomato stems, leaves and fruit than sprays at 0.05 or 0.025% a.i. Surface residues from the sprays at 0–1, 0.05 or 0.025% a.i. were respectively 5.4, 1.6, 0.7 μg/g fresh weight of ripe fruit at harvest. Tank-mixed zineb (0.12% a.i.) and captan (0.2% a.i.) were less effective and increasing the spray intervals from 1 wk to 2 and 3 wk reduced the fungitoxicity of captan and zineb more than that of dichlofluanid. Harvest residues on ripe fruit were 7.1, 2.8 or 2.4 μg/g when dichlofluanid (0.1 % a.i.) sprays were applied at 1, 2 and 3 wk intervals respectively. Good control of B. cinerea was achieved if the whole plant was sprayed initially with dichlofluanid as soon as the second truss was flowering and subsequent sprays were restricted to the upper section of stem including the four or five youngest trusses of buds, flowers and fruit. When used as a post-infection spray there was a period of c. 8 wk before dichlofluanid markedly reduced the incidence of grey mould. Tank-mixed zineb (0.12% a.i.) controlled Botrytis fruit spotting but not leaf and stem infections. Botrytis stem lesions extended more rapidly on zineb-sprayed plants than on unsprayed plants or on plants treated with captan or dichlofluanid.  相似文献

The fate of salmonellae applied to tomato plants was investigated. Five Salmonella serotypes were used to inoculate tomato plants before and after fruits set, either by injecting stems with inoculum or brushing flowers with it. Ripe tomato fruits were subjected to microbiological analysis. Peptone wash water, homogenates of stem scar tissues, and homogenates of fruit pulp were serially diluted and plated on bismuth sulfite agar before and after enrichment. Presumptive Salmonella colonies were confirmed by serological tests, PCR assay using HILA2 primers, and enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus PCR. Of 30 tomatoes harvested from inoculated plants, 11 (37%) were positive for Salmonella. Of the Salmonella-positive tomatoes, 43 and 40%, respectively, were from plants receiving stem inoculation before and after flower set. Two of eight tomatoes produced from inoculated flowers contained Salmonella. Higher percentages of surface (82%) and stem scar tissue (73%) samples, compared to pulp of Salmonella-positive tomatoes (55%), harbored the pathogen. Of the five serotypes in the inoculum, Montevideo was the most persistent, being isolated from tomatoes 49 days after inoculation, and Poona was the most dominant, being present in 5 of 11 Salmonella-positive tomatoes. Results suggest that Salmonella cells survive in or on tomato fruits from the time of inoculation at flowering through fruit ripening. Tomato stems and flowers are possible sites at which Salmonella may attach and remain viable during fruit development, thus serving as routes or reservoirs for contaminating ripened fruit.  相似文献

The influence of solutions of ascorbic acid, thiamine, L-arginine, and L-gtutamic acid on egg hatch, juvenile survival, and development and reproduction of Meloidogyne incognita in susceptible and resistant tomatoes was studied. Maximum inhibition of egg hatch occurred at 2,000, 4,000, and 2,000 ppm for ascorbic acid, L-arginine, and L-glutamic acid, respectively. Larval survival was significantly reduced by concentrations of 2,000 ppm ascorbic acid and 1,000 ppm of L-arginine. Maximum inhibition of egg hatch and mortality of juveniles was achieved at a concentration of 4,000 ppm of ascorbic acid and L-arginine. L-glutamic acid and thiamine had respective moderate and minimal toxic effects. Foliar sprays of ascorbic acid, L-arginine, or L-glutamic acid suppressed the numbers of root galls, females, and egg masses on the susceptible tomato cultivar Tropic. Ascorbic acid and L-arginine had highly significant effects when applied to foliage before inoculation with nematodes. Thiamine had little effect. All sprays suppressed the numbers of root galls and females in roots of the resistant cultivar VFN8 when treatments were applied before inoculation. They were not, however, effective as post-inoculation treatments. Growth of a susceptible cultivar was improved by post-inoculation and pre-inoculation treatments when compared with the control plants which had neither nematode infection nor chemical treatment. No positive growth response to chemical treatment was seen in resistant control plants.  相似文献

Thiabendazole, iprodione and benodanil were tested for control of stem canker and black scurf disease of potatoes using seed tubers with or without black scurf planted in soil infested or not with Rhizoctonia solani . Dormant seed tubers were treated with fungicide dusts, dips or sprays and before planting dusts were applied to soil or to sprouts on seed tubers.
Plants grown from seed tubers with black scurf had more stem canker, stolon infection and Thanatephorus cucumeris and progeny tubers had more black scurf than from seed without black scurf. Infesting soil with R. solani increased black scurf but not stem canker or stolon infection.
Fungicide treatment of seed tubers controlled all phases of the disease and sprout and soil treatments also had significant effects. Numbers of tubers in July were usually increased by treatment although by harvest many small tubers (>3 cm) had been resorbed. Fungicide treatment substantially increased yield only when shoot tips were pruned by R. solani .
Regression analyses showed that stolon pruning, Thanatephorus and black scurf were significantly related to stem canker, and numbers of tubers in July but not in September were inversely related to stolon pruning.
The significance of sources of inoculum and the effects of controlling disease on tuber production are discussed in relation to methods of fungicide use.  相似文献

Acidic electrolyzed water (AEW), known to have germicidal activity, was obtained after electrolysis of 0.045% aqueous solution of sodium chloride. Freshly prepared AEW (pH 2.3-2.6, oxidation-reduction potential 1007-1025 mV, and free active chlorine concentration 27-35 ppm) was tested in vitro and (or) on tomato foliage and seed surfaces for its effects on the viability of plant pathogen propagules that could be potential seed contaminants. Foliar sprays of AEW were tested against bacterial spot disease of tomato under greenhouse and field conditions. The viability of propagules of Xanthomonas campestris pv. vesicatoria (bacterial spot pathogen), Streptomyces scabies (potato scab pathogen), and Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. lycopersici (root rot pathogen) was significantly reduced 4-8 log units within 2 min of exposure to AEW. Immersion of tomato seed from infected fruit in AEW for 1 and 3 min significantly reduced the populations of X. campestris pv. vesicatoria from the surface of the seed without affecting seed germination. Foliar sprays of AEW reduced X. campestris pv. vesicatoria populations and leaf spot severity on tomato foliage in the greenhouse. In the field, multiple sprays of AEW consistently reduced bacterial spot severity on tomato foliage. Disease incidence and severity was also reduced on fruit, but only in 2003. Fruit yield was either enhanced or not affected by the AEW sprays. These results indicate a potential use of AEW as a seed surface disinfectant or contact bactericide.  相似文献

Tomatoes grown in traditional mediums such as peat moss are usually supplied with essential nutrients by preplant fertilization and in the later growth stages by top dressing application to the root zone. According to the data from literature the efficient method of nutrient supply during the intensive stage of growth may be estimated as by foliar spraying. In the greenhouse experiment conducted in 1998–1999 a preplant fertilization by multicomponential fertilizer MIS-4 was applied to peat moss growing medium in full (4 kg per m3) and half (2 kg per m3) of recommended rate. Supplemental fertilization during the growing period was provided to the root zone or by using liquid multicomponential fertilizers Ekolist S and Mikrosol U in 5 sprays conducted at two week intervals. Results of the study proved that advantageous effect of foliar tomato nutrion grown in eat substrate was observed only in treatments with restricted supply of fertilizers to the growing medium. The maximum fruit yield was received from plots provided by the reduced preplant MIS-4 dose to 50 % of recommended rate combined with foliar sprays by Ekolist S. Such system of fertilization enhanced the marketable yield of fruit by 9.8 % and early yield by 11.3 % as compared to that obtained with preplant and top dressing soil application. Foliar nutrion did not change dry matter and vitamin C content and increased total and reducing sugars accumulation in tomato fruits.

The potential role of the resin system in the response of Austrian pine (Pinus nigra Arn.) seedlings to mechanical injury and fungal infection was studied in greenhouse experiments. Anatomical observations were performed on 2-year-old plants wounded at collar level and inoculated with Sphaeropsis sapinea (Fr.: Fr.) Dyko & Sutton in Sutton or Diplodia scrobiculata (J. de Wet, B. Slippers & M. J. Wingfield, sp. nov.; sensu de Wet et al. 2003), two fungal pathogens that cause shoot blight and canker on conifers, and that are characterized by different levels of aggressiveness. Histological examination of host tissue taken from the stem at 0, 8, and 12 cm above the treatment site revealed significant treatment- and time-dependent effects on the course of locally and systemically induced traumatic resin duct (TRD) development. Occurrence of TRDs was observed after 4 days only in seedlings inoculated with D. scrobiculata. At 12 days, TRDs were present also in mock-inoculated controls. No TRDs appeared in seedlings inoculated with S. sapinea. However, S. sapinea caused loss of vacuolar phenolics, severe disruption of cambial tissue and invaded the host xylem quickly and apparently unimpeded, whereas D. scrobiculata was never detected in the host xylem. Five-year-old Austrian pines subjected to the same stem base treatments were used to determine the resin mass flowing from the stem 30 cm above the treatment sites. Wounding and/or inoculation induced a significant, 8.3-fold average increase in systemic resin flow over the untreated trees 3 weeks after basal treatment, suggesting that wounding is the sole prerequisite for systemic induction of resin flow. The results are discussed in the context of current disease resistance models.  相似文献

Healthy seed tubers and seed tubers with gangrene or inoculated with Rhizoctonia solani to induce stem canker were planted 38 or 76 cm apart or alternately at 38 cm spacing in 2-row (1985) or 4-row (1986) plots at Rothamsted.
At 38 cm spacing, stem canker decreased yield by 5% and 8% respectively in 1985 and 1986 and gangrene by 5% and 14%, but usually by twice these amounts when seed was spaced at 76 cm. In all experiments, yields from plots with alternate healthy and inoculated seed (50% disease) were similar to yields from healthy seed, although within these mixed populations individual plant yields from healthy seed were larger and those from diseased seed were smaller than from plots of healthy or inoculated seed respectively. Samples in August showed a similar effect on fresh weight of foliage.
Disease usually decreased the number of stemdplant but in 1985 gangrene increased stem numbers and probably accounted for small amounts of compensatory growth from neighbouring healthy plants.  相似文献

Nontyphoid salmonellosis caused by Salmonella enterica is the most common bacterial food-borne illness in humans, and fresh produce, including tomatoes, is a common vehicle. Accumulating data indicate that human enteric pathogenic bacteria, including S. enterica, interact actively with plants. Tomato plants were inoculated with S. enterica to evaluate plausible contamination routes and to determine if the tomato cultivar affects S. enterica colonization. S. enterica population levels on tomato leaves were cultivar dependent. S. enterica levels on Solanum pimpinellifolium (West Virginia 700 [WVa700]) were lower than on S. lycopersicum cultivars. S. enterica preferentially colonized type 1 trichomes and rarely interacted with stomata, unlike what has been reported for cut lettuce leaves. Early S. enterica leaf colonization led to contamination of all fruit, with levels as high as 10(5) CFU per fruit. Reduced bacterial speck lesion formation correlated with reduced S. enterica populations in the phyllosphere. Tomato pedicels and calyxes also harbored large S. enterica populations following inoculation via contaminated water postharvest. WVa700 green fruit harbored significantly smaller S. enterica populations than did red fruit or S. lycopersicum fruit. We found that plants irrigated with contaminated water had larger S. enterica populations than plants grown from seeds planted in infested soil. However, both routes of contamination resulted in detectable S. enterica populations in the phyllosphere. Phyllosphere S. enterica populations pose a risk of fruit contamination and subsequent human disease. Restricting S. enterica phyllosphere populations may result in reduced fruit contamination. We have identified WVa700 as a tomato cultivar that can restrict S. enterica survival in the phyllosphere.  相似文献

The effects of pre-sowing magnetic treatments on growth and yield of tomato (cv Campbell-28) were investigated under field conditions. Tomato seeds were exposed to full-wave rectified sinusoidal non-uniform magnetic fields (MFs) induced by an electromagnet at 100 mT (rms) for 10 min and at 170 mT (rms) for 3 min. Non-treated seeds were considered as controls. Plants were grown in experimental plots (30.2 m(2)) and were cultivated according to standard agricultural practices. During the vegetative and generative growth stages, samples were collected at regular intervals for growth rate analyses, and the resistance of plants to geminivirus and early blight was evaluated. At physiological maturity, the plants were harvested from each plot and the yield and yield parameters were determined. In the vegetative stage, the treatments led to a significant increase in leaf area, leaf dry weight, and specific leaf area (SLA) per plant. Also, the leaf, stem, and root relative growth rates of plants derived from magnetically treated seeds were greater than those shown by the control plants. In the generative stage, leaf area per plant and relative growth rates of fruits from plants from magnetically exposed seeds were greater than those of the control plant fruits. At fruit maturity stage, all magnetic treatments increased significantly (P < .05) the mean fruit weight, the fruit yield per plant, the fruit yield per area, and the equatorial diameter of fruits in comparison with the controls. At the end of the experiment, total dry matter was significantly higher for plants from magnetically treated seeds than that of the controls. A significant delay in the appearance of first symptoms of geminivirus and early blight and a reduced infection rate of early blight were observed in the plants from exposed seeds to MFs. Pre-sowing magnetic treatments would enhance the growth and yield of tomato crop.  相似文献

Studies were done to evaluate specific strains of plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) for induced resistance against cucumber mosaic cucumovirus(CMV) in tomato. In greenhouse experiments where plants were challenged by mechanical inoculation of CMV, the percentage of symptomatic plants in the most effective PGPR treatments ranged from 32 to 58%,compared with 88 to 98% in the nonbacterized, challenged disease control treatment. Field experiments were conducted in 1996 and 1997 to evaluate 4 PGPR strain treatments based on superior performance in the greenhouse studies. In the 1996field experiment, tomato plants treated with 3 PGPR strains exhibited a significantly lower incidence of CMV infection and significantly higher yields, compared with nonbacterized, CMV-challenged controls. In 1997, the overall percentages of plants infected with CMV in the control and PGPR treatments was higher than in 1996. CMV symptom development was significantly reduced on PGPR-treated plants in 1997compared with the control, but the percentage of infected plants and tomato yields were not significantly different among treatments. These results suggest that PGPR-mediated induced resistance against CMV infection following mechanical inoculation onto tomato can be maintained under field conditions. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献
