Essential differences in the intensity of collective immunity to poliomyelitis in the donors of Moscow and Kaluga were established. To find out the nature of high characteristics of collective immunity to poliovirus, types 1 and 2, in the donors of Kaluga, strain-specific antibodies to wild and vaccine polioviruses were studied. In a considerable number of donors strain-specific antibodies to poliovirus, types 1 and 2, were detected. This made it possible to presume a sufficiently wide circulation of these viruses among the population of the city in the middle of the 20th century and, as a consequence, high level of collective immunity appeared. Strain-specific antibodies to poliovirus of type 3 were rarely detected. This made it possible to suggest that the circulation of viruses of this type among the population was limited. Immunity to viruses of this type was due only to immunization. For this reason the characteristics of collective immunity in the donors of Moscow and Kaluga coincided. The detection of strain-specific antibodies to poliomyelitis virus allowed to retrospectively form the opinion of the spread and time of the circulation of wild poliomyelitis viruses in the population.  相似文献

Correlation has been revealed between the circulation of polioviruses among the population and environmental objects. A rise in the circulation of polioviruses, type I, was caused by a decrease in collective immunity to this virus type. Water supply and sewage system purification was found ineffective with respect to enteroviral contamination. Vaccinal prophylaxis, carried out for many years, did not lead to the elimination of poliovirus strains, genetically different from vaccine ones.  相似文献

It has long been assumed that most parts of a genome and most genetic variations or SNPs are non-functional with regard to reproductive fitness.However,the collective effects of SNPs have yet to be examined by experimental science.We here developed a novel approach to examine the relationship between traits and the total amount of SNPs in panels of genetic reference populations.We identified the minor alleles(MAs)in each panel and the MA content(MAC)that each inbred strain carried for a set of SNPs with genotypes determined in these panels.MAC was nearly linearly linked to quantitative variations in numerous traits in model organisms,including life span,tumor susceptibility,learning and memory,sensitivity to alcohol and anti-psychotic drugs,and two correlated traits poor reproductive fitness and strong immunity.These results suggest that the collective effects of SNPs are functional and do affect reproductive fitness.  相似文献

The results of examination of antibodies against all three types ofthe poliomyelitis virus from the period of systematically performed multipurpose immunological survey in the Czech Socialistic Republic (1970--1975) are presented and evaluated. The analysis of these results indicates that the status of immunity in the Czech population, systematically vaccinated against poliomyelitis, is good, as all requirements of collective protection against this disease have been met. At the same time, the results demonstrated that immunological surveys are at present the most suitable method of verifying the immunity of the vaccinated population and should be consistently performed.  相似文献

The evolution of group living requires that individuals limit the inherent risks of parasite infection. To this end, group living insects have developed a unique capability of mounting collective anti-parasite defences, such as allogrooming and corpse removal from the nest. Over the last 20 years, this phenomenon (called social immunity) was mostly studied in eusocial insects, with results emphasizing its importance in derived social systems. However, the role of social immunity in the early evolution of group living remains unclear. Here, I investigate this topic by first presenting the definitions of social immunity and discussing their applications across social systems. I then provide an up-to-date appraisal of the collective and individual mechanisms of social immunity described in eusocial insects and show that they have counterparts in non-eusocial species and even solitary species. Finally, I review evidence demonstrating that the increased risks of parasite infection in group living species may both decrease and increase the level of personal immunity, and discuss how the expression of social immunity could drive these opposite effects. By highlighting similarities and differences of social immunity across social systems, this review emphasizes the potential importance of this phenomenon in the early evolution of the multiple forms of group living in insects.  相似文献

Anamnestic data in respect to measles failed to correspond to the results of serological examination of contacts at the foci of the given infection. The collective immunity level in children's institutions is inadequate for the prevention of measles outbreaks. The incidence of the disease depended both on the level of immunity among the children and on the duration of presence of the source of infection in the focus. Live measles vaccine protected 90 percent of the vaccinated children from contracting the disease in the foci. At the very beginning of the postvaccinal period immunization defects were revealed in 26.5 percent of the vaccinated children who fell ill with measles. Morbidity index among the vaccinated individuals constituted 3.8 percent. One of the causes of measles contraction by the vaccinated individuals was the loss of postvaccinal immunity. Systematic control over the antimeasles immunity level with the aid of serological investigations is necessary for the purpose of detection of persons sensitive to measles in children's collective bodies.  相似文献

Social insect colonies have evolved collective immune defences against parasites. These 'social immune systems' result from the cooperation of the individual group members to combat the increased risk of disease transmission that arises from sociality and group living. In this review we illustrate the pathways that parasites can take to infect a social insect colony and use these pathways as a framework to predict colony defence mechanisms and present the existing evidence. We find that the collective defences can be both prophylactic and activated on demand and consist of behavioural, physiological and organisational adaptations of the colony that prevent parasite entrance, establishment and spread. We discuss the regulation of collective immunity, which requires complex integration of information about both the parasites and the internal status of the insect colony. Our review concludes with an examination of the evolution of social immunity, which is based on the consequences of selection at both the individual and the colony level.  相似文献

Many nursing homes have an influenza vaccination policy in which it is assumed that express (proxy) consent is not necessary. Tacit consent procedures are more efficient if one aims at high vaccination rates. In this paper I focus on incompetent residents and proxy consent. Tacit proxy consent for vaccination implies a deviance of standard proxy consent requirements. I analyse several arguments that may possibly support such a deviance. The primary reason to offer influenza vaccination is that vaccinated persons have a significantly reduced risk of getting the flu. This reason however cannot support the assumption that each nursing home resident is 'better off ' if she is vaccinated. Neither can it support tacit proxy consent policies. More promising are arguments that take the collective nature of infectious diseases into account. A potentially strong, but ultimately insufficient, argument for non-express consent is that vaccination contributes to prevention of harm to others. Other arguments emphasise the importance of group protection: herd immunity. I discuss three collective reasons for aiming at herd immunity: solidarity, a common interest in reducing the risk of illness, and a common interest in the prevention of an influenza outbreak. The latter argument appears to be most important. An outbreak is not just detrimental to the health of residents; it is detrimental to their everyday social life as well. Outbreaks can be seen as a collective evil. My analysis shows that there are valid (though not necessarily sufficient) moral arguments for a tacit proxy consent policy.  相似文献

Reproductive genetic technologies (RGTs) allow parents to decide whether their future children will have or lack certain genetic predispositions. A popular model that has been proposed for regulating access to RGTs is the ‘genetic supermarket’. In the genetic supermarket, parents are free to make decisions about which genes to select for their children with little state interference. One possible consequence of the genetic supermarket is that collective action problems will arise: if rational individuals use the genetic supermarket in isolation from one another, this may have a negative effect on society as a whole, including future generations. In this article we argue that RGTs targeting height, innate immunity, and certain cognitive traits could lead to collective action problems. We then discuss whether this risk could in principle justify state intervention in the genetic supermarket. We argue that there is a plausible prima facie case for the view that such state intervention would be justified and respond to a number of arguments that might be adduced against that view.  相似文献

The state of collective immunity to diphtheria and tetanus in children of preschool age, depending on the kind of vaccine preparation used for immunization, was studied. The immunological potency of adsorbed DPT vaccine (i.e. its capacity of forming prolonged and stable basic immunity) was shown to be higher in comparison with the potency of adsorbed DT toxoid with reduced antigen content (DT-R). The study revealed that in all groups of children the level of antitetanus immunity was higher than the level of antidiphtheria immunity, and 3 years later its decrease was less pronounced. A stricter approach to giving medical grounds for the use of low-reactive adsorbed DT-R in the immunization of children belonging to groups of risk is recommended.  相似文献

The results of the analysis of the present epidemiological situation in diphtheria in the Maritime Territory are presented. The data on absolute and intensive characteristics, death rate due to this infection, the vaccination status of diphtheria patients, as well as the results of the study of the level and intensity of antidiphtheria immunity in the healthy population of the territory. The study revealed that the defects of collective antidiphtheria immunity correlated with morbidity rate among adults and children. Adults aged 40-50 years and children aged 6-7 years were regarded as risk groups; among them the highest proportion of nonimmune persons and the highest diphtheria morbidity rate were registered. Stabilization achieved by the present moment was the result of the mass immunization of the adult population, ensuring the necessary coverage (92%) of vaccination in 1995.  相似文献

The characteristics of antitetanus and antidiphtheria immunity in children, adolescents and adults in Perm have been determined by means of the passive hemagglutination test, and the tendency towards the decrease of their immunity to diphtheria with the increase of their age has been established. The registered and actual coverage of children and adolescents by immunization is characterized on the basis of the presence of antibodies to the tetanus component of combined vaccines. A considerable proportion of persons at boarding schools and vocational technical schools has been found to be seronegative with respect to diphtheria. Dendritic cell (DC) activation by viral RNA sensors such as TLR3 and MDA‐5 is critical for initiating antiviral immunity. Optimal DC activation is promoted by type I interferon (IFN) signaling which is believed to occur in either autocrine or paracrine fashion. Here, we show that neither autocrine nor paracrine type I IFN signaling can fully account for DC activation by poly(I:C) in vitro and in vivo. By controlling the density of type I IFN‐producing cells in vivo, we establish that instead a quorum of type I IFN‐producing cells is required for optimal DC activation and that this process proceeds at the level of an entire lymph node. This collective behavior, governed by type I IFN diffusion, is favored by the requirement for prolonged cytokine exposure to achieve DC activation. Furthermore, collective DC activation was found essential for the development of innate and adaptive immunity in lymph nodes. Our results establish how collective rather than cell‐autonomous processes can govern the initiation of immune responses.  相似文献

Formation of postinfection (postvaccination) immunity in anthrax and tularemia in irradiated animals has been found to be highly resistant to the effect of X-irradiation and independent of the time interval between vaccination and irradiation. However, the development of immunity was slowed down. Discrepancy between low antibody response and pronounced ability to resist even massive doses of active infaction has been observed, indicating that the onset of postinfection immunity is associated with factors less susceptible to irradiation than is formation of antibodies. In recent years the argument has been made that malignant tumors represent complex dynamic and self‐organizing biosystems. Furthermore, there is increasing evidence that collective cell migration is common during invasion and metastasis of malignant tumors. Here, we argue that cancer systems may be capable of developing multicellular collective patterns that resemble evolved adaptive behavior known from other biological systems including collective sensing of environmental conditions and collective decision‐making. We present a concept as to how these properties could arise in tumors and why the emergence of such swarm‐like patterns would confer advantageous properties to the spatiotemporal expansion of tumors, and consequently, why understanding and ultimately targeting such collectivity should be of interest for basic and clinical cancer research alike.  相似文献

An extension of the effective field approach for the normal mode dynamics of dissolved DNA polymers has been applied to study the vibrational modes of DNA-hydration sheath-counterion system, to include the effect of site bound counterions on the system dynamics. An alternative interpretation has been suggested for a 25 cm-1 mode recently observed in DNA samples and interpreted earlier as an interhelical mode. Analysing the eigenvectors this mode is found to possess a large electric dipole moment with longitudinal collective oscillations of the system. These characteristics identify this mode as a collective plasmon mode. Possible physical reasons for the existence of this character have been presented.  相似文献

Sociality is associated with an increased risk of disease transmission and one of the first defense of the insect colonies is represented by antimicrobial secretions. In many eusocial hymenopteran species venom glands represent one of the most important source of antimicrobial substances. It is known that in highly eusocial species the venom is spread on both the cuticle of insects and the comb, thus becoming a component of the so called "social immunity". So far, it is never been ascertained whether this phenomenon is also present in more primitively eusocial and incipiently eusocial groups. Using incipiently eusocial hover wasps as model, we demonstrate that venom is present on insect cuticles and that it strongly acts against microorganisms. By contrast, the nest, regardless of materials, does not represent a 'medium" where the venom is deposited by wasps in order to act as a social antiseptic weapon. Our findings discussed in an evolutionary perspective indicate that a certain degree of sociality or a sufficient number of individuals in an insect society are thresholds to be reached for the rise of complex and efficient forms of collective and social immunity as mechanisms of resistance to diseases.  相似文献
