The photosynthetic responses of the tropical tree species Acacia nigrescens Oliv. grown at different atmospheric CO2 concentrations—from sub-ambient to super-ambient—have been studied. Light-saturated rates of net photosynthesis (A sat) in A. nigrescens, measured after 120 days exposure, increased significantly from sub-ambient (196 μL L−1) to current ambient (386 μL L−1) CO2 growth conditions but did not increase any further as [CO2] became super-ambient (597 μL L−1). Examination of photosynthetic CO2 response curves, leaf nitrogen content, and leaf thickness showed that this acclimation was most likely caused by reduction in Rubisco activity and a shift towards ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate regeneration-limited photosynthesis, but not a consequence of changes in mesophyll conductance. Also, measurements of the maximum efficiency of PSII and the carotenoid to chlorophyll ratio of leaves indicated that it was unlikely that the pattern of A sat seen was a consequence of growth [CO2] induced stress. Many of the photosynthetic responses examined were not linear with respect to the concentration of CO2 but could be explained by current models of photosynthesis.  相似文献

A multichannel automated chamber system was developed for continuous monitoring of CO2 exchange at multiple points between agro-ecosystem or soil and atmosphere. This system consisted of an automated chamber subsystem with a CO2 concentration analyzer and a data logging subsystem. Both subsystems were under the control of a programmable logic controller (PLC). The automated chamber subsystem contained 18 chambers (50 cm × 50 cm × 50 cm) and a compressor. The chamber lids were closed and can be automatically opened. During measurement, one of the 18 chambers was kept closed for three minutes for measuring and the other chambers were kept open to maintain the natural soil conditions to the maximum extent. Environmental variables were simultaneously measured using sensors and recorded by the data logger. The reliability of the multichannel automated chamber system was tested and the results showed that the turbulence of the fans had no significant effect on the CO2 exchange. The changes in the air and the temperature of soil and soil moisture inside the chambers, caused by the enclosure of the chambers, were not significant. The net ecosystem CO2 exchange for the wheat ecosystem was ?2.35 μmol·m?2·s>?1 and the soil respiration was 3.87 μmol·m?2·s>?1 in the wheat field, and 6.61 μmol·m?2·s>?1 in the apple orchard.  相似文献

Summary In order to document the natural CO2 environment of the moss Hylocomium splendens, and ascertain whether or not the moss was adapted to this, and its interactions with other microenvironmental factors, two studies were carried out. Firstly, the seasonal variations of CO2 concentration, photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), tissue water content and temperature were measured in the natural microenvironment of H. splendens in a subarctic forest during the summer period (July–September). Secondly, the photosynthetic responses of the species to controlled CO2 concentrations, PAR, temperature, and hydration were measured in the laboratory. CO2 concentrations around the upper parts of the plant, when PAR was above the compensation point (30 mol m–2 s–1), were mostly between 400 and 450 ppm. They occasionally increased up to 1143 ppm for short periods. PAR flux densities below saturating light levels for photosynthesis (100 mol m–2 s–1), occurred during 65% (July), 76% (August) and 96% (September) of the hours of the summer period. The temperature optimum of photosynthesis was 20° C: this temperature coincided with PAR above the compensation point during 5%, 6% and 0% of the time in July, August and September, respectively. Optimal hydration of tissues was infrequent. Hence PAR, temperature and water limit CO2 uptake for most of the growing season. Our data suggest that the higher than normal ambient CO2 concentration in the immediate environment of the plant counteracts some of the limitations in PAR supply that it experiences in its habitat. This species already experiences concentrations of atmospheric CO2 predicted to occur over the next 50 years.  相似文献

Elevated CO2 enhances carbon uptake of a plant stand, but the magnitude of the increase varies among growth stages. We studied the relative contribution of structural and physiological factors to the CO2 effect on the carbon balance during stand development. Stands of an annual herb Chenopodium album were established in open-top chambers at ambient and elevated CO2 concentrations (370 and 700 μmol mol−1). Plant biomass growth, canopy structural traits (leaf area, leaf nitrogen distribution, and light gradient in the canopy), and physiological characteristics (leaf photosynthesis and respiration of organs) were studied through the growing season. CO2 exchange of the stand was estimated with a canopy photosynthesis model. Rates of light-saturated photosynthesis and dark respiration of leaves as related with nitrogen content per unit leaf area and time-dependent reduction in specific respiration rates of stems and roots were incorporated into the model. Daily canopy carbon balance, calculated as an integration of leaf photosynthesis minus stem and root respiration, well explained biomass growth determined by harvests (r 2 = 0.98). The increase of canopy photosynthesis with elevated CO2 was 80% at an early stage and decreased to 55% at flowering. Sensitivity analyses suggested that an alteration in leaf photosynthetic traits enhanced canopy photosynthesis by 40–60% throughout the experiment period, whereas altered canopy structure contributed to the increase at the early stage only. Thus, both physiological and structural factors are involved in the increase of carbon balance and growth rate of C. album stands at elevated CO2. However, their contributions were not constant, but changed with stand development.  相似文献

Oxygen may enhance CO2-saturated photosynthesis in intact leaves, which display the Warburg effect when illuminated at the current atmospheric level of CO2 and O2, of about 350 μl l−1 and 21%, respectively. The magnitude of the stimulation depends on irradiance. The K M(O2) of the stimulation is 128 μM (10.6% O2). Maximum enhancement in wheat leaves is 6.1 and 5.3 μmol m−2 s−1 under 27.9 and 18.7 mW cm−2, respectively, corresponding to a 25–30% increase in the ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate (RuBP) turnover rate if compared with O2-free ambient gas phase. The stimulation appears in 5–10 s after a sharp increase in O2. In response to a decrease in O2, the new stabilized rate is reached in 5–7 min. The stimulation does not involve any increase in the activity of Rubisco. The effect correlates with increased concentration of RuBP. Oxygen enhances CO2-saturated photosynthesis by acting as a terminal electron acceptor in the photosynthetic electron transport. The magnitude of the effect may be adopted as an index of the pseudocyclic photophosphorylation in vivo.  相似文献

Soil CO2 efflux in a beech forest: comparison of two closed dynamic systems   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

The aim of this study was to understand why two closed dynamic systems with a very similar design gave large differences in soil CO2 efflux measurements (PP systems and LI-COR). Both in the field (forest beech stand) and in the laboratory, the PPsystems gave higher estimations of soil CO2 efflux than the LI-COR system (ranging from 30% to 50%). The difference in wind speed occurring within the soil respiration chambers (0.9 m s−1 within the SRC-1 and 0.4 m s−1 within the LI-6000-09 chambers) may account for the discrepancy between the two systems. An excessive air movement inside the respiration chamber is thought to disrupt the high laminar boundary layer over the forest floor. This would promote an exhaust of the CO2 accumulated into the upper soil layers into the chamber and a lateral diffusion of CO2 in the soil towards the respiration chamber. The discrepancy between the two systems was reduced (i) by decreasing fan speed within the SRC-1, (ii) by increasing wind speed over the soil surface outside the respiration chamber, or (iii) by using an artificial soil design without high CO2 concentration in soil pores. We show that wind speed is an important component of soil CO2 diffusion which must be taken into account when measuring soil CO2 efflux, even on very fine textured soil like silt-loam soil. Proper measurement can be achieved by maintaining wind speed inside the chamber below 0.4 m s−1 since low wind speed conditions predominate under forest canopies. However, more accurate measurements will be obtained by regulating wind speeds within the chamber at a velocity representative of the wind speed recorded simultaneously at the floor surface. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Profiles of subsurface soil CO2 concentration, soil temperature, and soil moisture, and throughfall were measured continuously during the years 2005 and 2006 in 16 locations at the free air CO2 enrichment facility situated within a temperate loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) stand. Sampling at these locations followed a 4 by 4 replicated experimental design comprised of two atmospheric CO2 concentration levels (ambient [CO2]a, ambient + 200 ppmv, [CO2]e) and two soil nitrogen (N) deposition levels (ambient, ambient + fertilization at 11.2 gN m−2 year−1). The combination of these measurements permitted indirect estimation of belowground CO2 production and flux profiles in the mineral soil. Adjacent to the soil CO2 profiles, direct (chamber-based) measurements of CO2 fluxes from the soil–litter complex were simultaneously conducted using the automated carbon efflux system. Based on the measured soil CO2 profiles, neither [CO2]e nor N fertilization had a statistically significant effect on seasonal soil CO2, CO2 production, and effluxes from the mineral soil over the study period. Soil moisture and temperature had different effects on CO2 concentration depending on the depth. Variations in CO2 were mostly explained by soil temperature at deeper soil layers, while water content was an important driver at the surface (within the first 10 cm), where CO2 pulses were induced by rainfall events. The soil effluxes were equal to the CO2 production for most of the time, suggesting that the site reached near steady-state conditions. The fluxes estimated from the CO2 profiles were highly correlated to the direct measurements when the soil was neither very dry nor very wet. This suggests that a better parameterization of the soil CO2 diffusivity is required for these soil moisture extremes.  相似文献

Net ecosystem exchange of CO2 (NEE) was measured during 2005 using the eddy covariance (EC) technique over a reed (Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud.) wetland in Northeast China (121°54′E, 41°08′N). Diurnal NEE patterns varied markedly among months. Outside the growing season, NEE lacked a diurnal pattern and it fluctuated above zero with an average value of 0.07 mg CO2 m−2 s−1 resulting from soil microbial activity. During the growing season, NEE showed a distinct V-like diel course, and the mean daily NEE was −7.48 ± 2.74 g CO2 m−2 day−1, ranging from −13.58 g CO2 m−2 day−1 (July) to −0.10 g CO2 m−2 day−1 (October). An annual cycle was also apparent, with CO2 uptake increasing rapidly in May, peaking in July, and decreasing from August. Monthly cumulative NEE ranged from −115 ± 24 g C m−2 month−1 (the reed wetland was a CO2 sink) in July to 75 ± 16 g C m−2 month−1 (CO2 source) in November. The annual CO2 balance suggests a net uptake of −65 ± 14 g C m−2 year−1, mainly due to the gains in June and July. Cumulative CO2 emission during the non-growing season was 327 g C m−2, much greater than the absolute value of the annual CO2 balance, which proves the importance of the wintertime CO2 efflux at the study site. The ratio of ecosystem respiration (Reco) to gross primary productivity (GPP) for this reed ecosystem was 0.95, indicating that 95% of plant assimilation was consumed by the reed plant or supported the activities of heterotrophs in the soil. Daytime NEE values during the growing season were closely related to photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) (r2 > 0.63, p < 0.01). Both maximum ecosystem photosynthesis rate (Amax) and apparent quantum yield (α) were season-dependent, and reached their peak values in July (1.28 ± 0.11 mg CO2 m−2 s−1, 0.098 ± 0.027 μmol CO2 μmol−1 photon, respectively), corresponding to the observed maximum NEE in July. Ecosystem respiration (Reco) relied on temperature and soil water content, and the mean value of Q10 was about 2.4 with monthly variation ranging from 1.8 to 4.1 during 2005. Annual methane emission from this reed ecosystem was estimated to be about 3 g C m−2 year−1, and about 5% of the net carbon fixed by the reed wetland was released to the atmosphere as CH4.  相似文献

Vertical structure of plant stands and canopies may change under conditions of elevated CO2 due to differential responses of overstory and understory plants or plant parts. In the long term, seedling recruitment, competition, and thus population or community structure may be affected. Aside from the possible differential direct effects of elevated CO2 on photosynthesis and growth, both the quantity and quality of the light below the overstory canopy could be indirectly affected by CO2-induced changes in overstory leaf area index (LAI) and/or changes in overstory leaf quality. In order to explore such possible interactions, we compared canopy leaf area development, canopy light extinction and the quality of light beneath overstory leaves of two-storied monospecific stands ofRicinus communis exposed to ambient (340 μl l−1) and elevated (610 μl l−1) CO2. Plants in each stand were grown in a common soil as closed “artificial ecosystems” with a ground area of 6.7 m2. LAI of overstory plants in all ecosystems more than doubled during the experiment but was not different between CO2 treatments at the end. As a consequence, extinction of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) was also not altered. However, under elevated CO2 the red to far-red ratio (R:FR) measured beneath overstory leaves was 10% lower than in ecosystems treated with ambient CO2. This reduction was associated with increased thickness of palisade layers of overstory leaves and appears to be a plausible explanation for the specific enhancement of stem elongation of understory plants (without a corresponding biomass response) under elevated CO2. CO2 enrichment led to increased biomass of overstory plants (mainly stem biomass) but had no effect on understory biomass. The results of this study raise the possibility of an important indirect effect of elevated CO2 at the stand-level. We suggest that, under elevated CO2, reductions in the R:FR ratio beneath overstory canopies may affect understory plant development independently of the effects of PAR extinction.  相似文献

Efflux of carbon dioxide from snow-covered forest floors   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The release of CO2 from the snow surface in winter and the soil surface in summer was directly or indirectly measured in four cool-temperate deciduous broadleaved and evergreen needle forests. The closed chamber method (CC-method) and Fick's diffusion model (DM-method) were used for the direct and indirect measurements, respectively. The winter soil temperatures from the soil surface to 10 cm depth were between 0 and 2°C. The concentration of CO2 within snowpack increased linearly with increasing snow depth. The average effluxes of CO2 calculated from the gradients of CO2 concentration in the snow using the DM-method ranged from 20 to 75 mg CO2 m−2 h−1, while the CC-method showed the average effluxes of 20 to 50 mg CO2m−2h−1. These results reveal that the snow thermally insulates the soil, allowing CO2 production to continue at soil temperatures a little above freezing throughout the winter. Carbon dioxide formed in the soil can move across snowpack up to the atmosphere. The winter/summer ratio of CO2 emission was estimated to be higher than 7%. Therefore, the snow-covered soil served as a source of CO2 in the winter and the effluxes represent an important part of the annual CO2 budget in snowy regions.  相似文献

The Alpine meadow is one of the vegetation types widely distributed on the Tibetan Plateau in China with an area of about 1.2 million square kilometers. The Damxung rangeland station, located in the hinterland of the Tibetan Plateau, is covered with an typical vegetation. The continuous carbon flux data (from August to middle October, 2003) measured with the open-path eddy covariance system was used to analyze the diurnal variation pattern of net ecosystem carbon dioxide exchange (NEE) and its relationship with the environmental factors, such as photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), precipitation, and temperature. Results showed that NEE presented obvious diurnal variation pattern with single-peak of diurnal maximum carbon assimilation at 11: 00–12: 00 (local time) with an average of −0.268 mg CO2·m−2·s−1, i.e., −6.08 μmol CO2·m−2·s−1. During the daytime, NEE fitted fairly well with PAR in a rectangular hyperbola function with the apparent quantum yield (0.020 3 μmol CO2 μmol−1 PAR) and maximum ecosystem assimilation (9.741 1 μmol CO2·m−2·s−1). During the night-time, NEE showed a good exponential relation with the soil temperature at 5 cm depth. __________ Translated from Acta Ecologica Sinica 2005, 25(8): 1948–1952 [译自: 生态学报, 2005, 25(8): 1948–1952]  相似文献

Rates of soil respiration (CO2 effluxes), subsurface pore gas CO2/O2 concentrations, soil temperature and soil water content were measured for 15 months in two temperate and contrasting Danish forest ecosystems: beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) and Norway spruce (Picea abies [L.] Karst.). Soil CO2 effluxes showed a distinct seasonal trend in the range of 0.48–3.3 μmol CO2 m−2 s−1 for beech and 0.50–2.92 μmol CO2 m−2 s−1 for spruce and were well-correlated with near-surface soil temperatures. The soil organic C-stock (upper 1 m including the O-horizon) was higher in the spruce stand (184±23 Mg C ha−1) compared to the beech stand (93±19 Mg C ha−1) and resulted in a faster turnover time as calculated by mass/flux in soil beneath the beech stand (28 years) compared to spruce stand (60 years). Observed soil CO2 concentrations and effluxes were simulated using a Fickian diffusion-reaction model based on vertical CO2 production rates and soil diffusivity. Temporal trends were simulated on the basis of observed trends in the distribution of soil water, temperature, and live roots as well as temperature and water content sensitivity functions. These functions were established based on controlled laboratory incubation experiments. The model was successfully validated against observed soil CO2 effluxes and concentrations and revealed that temporal trends generally could be linked to variations in subsurface CO2 production rates and diffusion over time and with depths. However, periods with exceptionally high CO2 effluxes (> 20 μmol CO2 m−2 s−1) were noted in March 2000 in relation to drying after heavy rain and after the removal of snow from collars. Both cases were considered non-steady state and could not be simulated.

Two cultivars (Katy and Erhuacao) of apricot (Prunus armeniaca L.) were evaluated under open-field and solar-heated greenhouse conditions in northwest China, to determine the effect of photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD), leaf temperature, and CO2 concentration on the net photosynthetic rate (P N). In greenhouse, Katy registered 28.3 μmol m−2 s−1 for compensation irradiance and 823 μmol m−2 s−1 for saturation irradiance, which were 73 and 117 % of those required by Erhuacao, respectively. The optimum temperatures for cvs. Katy and Erhuacao were 25 and 35 °C in open-field and 22 and 30 °C in greenhouse, respectively. At optimal temperatures, P N of the field-grown Katy was 16.5 μmol m−2 s−1, 21 % less than for a greenhouse-grown apricot. Both cultivars responded positively to CO2 concentrations below the CO2 saturation concentration, whereas Katy exhibited greater P N (18 %) and higher carboxylation efficiency (91 %) than Erhuacao at optimal CO2 concentration. Both cultivars exhibited greater photosynthesis in solar-heated greenhouses than in open-field, but Katy performed better than Erhuacao under greenhouse conditions.  相似文献

Summary CO2 efflux from tussock tundra in Alaska that had been exposed to elevated CO2 for 2.5 growing seasons was measured to assess the effect of long- and short-term CO2 enrichment on soil respiration. Long-term treatments were: 348, 514, and 683 μll−1 CO2 and 680 μll−1 CO2+4°C above ambient. Measurements were made at 5 CO2 concentrations between 87 and 680 μll−1 CO2. Neither long- or short-term CO2 enrichment significantly affected soil CO2 efflux. Tundra developed at elevated temperature and 680 μll−1 CO2 had slightly higher, but not statistically different, mean respiration rates compared to untreated tundra and to tundra under CO2 control alone.  相似文献

Membrane inlet mass spectrometry indicated massive light-dependent cycling of inorganic carbon between the medium and the cells of various phytoplankton species representing the main groups of aquatic primary producers. These included diatoms, symbiotic and free living dinoflagellates, a coccolithophorid, a green alga and filamentous and single cell cyanobacteria. These organisms could maintain an ambient CO2 concentration substantially above or below that expected at chemical equilibrium with HCO3 . The coccolithophorid Emiliania huxleyishifted from net CO2 uptake to net CO2 efflux with rising light intensity. Differing responses of CO2 uptake and CO2 fixation to changing light intensity supported the notion that these two processes are not compulsorily linked. Simultaneous measurements of CO2 and O2 exchange and of the fluorescence parameters in Synechococcus sp. strain PCC 7942, showed that CO2 uptake can serve as a sensitive probe of the energy status of the photosynthetic reaction centers. However, during transitions in light intensity, changes in CO2 uptake did not accord with those expected from fluorescence change. Quantification of the net fluxes of CO2, HCO3 and of photosynthesis at steady-state revealed that substantial HCO3 efflux accompanied CO2 uptake and fixation in the case of `CO2 users'. On the other hand, `HCO3 users' were characterized by a rate of net CO2 uptake below that of CO2 fixation. The results support the notion that entities associated with the CCM function not only in raising the CO2 concentration at the site of Rubisco; they may also serve as a means of diminishing photodynamic damage by dissipating excess light energy. Fluxes of CO2 during the snow-covered season contribute to annual carbon budgets, but our understanding of the mechanisms controlling the seasonal pattern and magnitude of carbon emissions in seasonally snow-covered areas is still developing. In a subalpine meadow on Niwot Ridge, Colorado, soil CO2 fluxes were quantified with the gradient method through the snowpack in winter 2006 and 2007 and with chamber measurements during summer 2007. The CO2 fluxes of 0.71 μmol m−2 s−1 in 2006 and 0.86 μmol m−2 s−1 in 2007 are among the highest reported for snow-covered ecosystems in the literature. These fluxes resulted in 156 and 189 g C m−2 emitted over the winter, ~30% of the annual soil CO2 efflux at this site. In general, the CO2 flux increased during the winter as soil moisture increased. A conceptual model was developed with distinct snow cover zones to describe this as well as the three other reported temporal patterns in CO2 flux from seasonally snow-covered soils. As snow depth and duration increase, the factor controlling the CO2 flux shifts from freeze–thaw cycles (zone I) to soil temperature (zone II) to soil moisture (zone III) to carbon availability (zone IV). The temporal pattern in CO2 flux in each zone changes from periodic pulses of CO2 during thaw events (zone I), to CO2 fluxes reaching a minimum when soil temperatures are lowest in mid-winter (zone II), to CO2 fluxes increasing gradually as soil moisture increases (zone III), to CO2 fluxes decreasing as available carbon is consumed. This model predicts that interannual variability in snow cover or directional shifts in climate may result in dramatically different seasonal patterns of CO2 flux from seasonally snow-covered soils.  相似文献

The response of barley (Hordeum vulgare L. cv. Akcent) to various photosynthetic photon flux densities (PPFDs) and elevated [CO2] [700 μmol (CO2) mol−1; EC] was studied by gas exchange, chlorophyll (Chl) a fluorescence, and pigment analysis. In comparison with barley grown under ambient [CO2] [350 μmol (CO2) mol−1; AC] the EC acclimation resulted in a decrease in photosynthetic capacity, reduced stomatal conductance, and decreased total Chl content. The extent of acclimation depression of photosynthesis, the most pronounced for the plants grown at 730 μmol m−2 s−1 (PPFD730), may be related to the degree of sink-limitation. The increased non-radiative dissipation of absorbed photon energy for all EC plants corresponded to the higher de-epoxidation state of xanthophylls only for PPFD730 barley. Further, a pronounced decrease in photosystem 2 (PS2) photochemical efficiency (given as FV/FM) for EC plants grown at 730 and 1 200 μmol m−2 s−1 in comparison with AC barley was related to the reduced epoxidation of antheraxanthin and zeaxanthin back to violaxanthin in darkness. Thus the EC conditions sensitise the photosynthetic apparatus of high-irradiance acclimated barley plants (particularly PPFD730) to the photoinactivation of PS2. CO2 efflux from soil and snow surfaces was measured continuously in a Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica D. Don) forest in central Japan using an open dynamic chamber system. The chamber opens and closes automatically and records measurements based on an open-flow dynamic method. Between May and December, mean soil CO2 efflux ranged from 1,529 mg CO2 m−2 h−1 in September to 255 mg CO2 m−2 h−1 in December. The seasonal change in CO2 efflux from the soil paralleled the seasonal pattern of soil temperature. No marked diurnal trends in soil CO2 efflux were observed on days without rainfall, whereas significant pulses in soil CO2 efflux were observed on days with rainfall. In this plantation, soil CO2 efflux frequently responded to rainfall. Measurements of changes from litter-covered soil to snow-covered surfaces revealed that CO2 efflux decreased from values of ca. 250 mg CO2 m−2 h−1 above soil to less than 33 mg CO2 m−2 h−1 above snow. Soil temperature alone explained 66% of the overall variation in soil CO2 efflux, but explained approximately 85% of the variation when data from two anomalous periods were excluded. Moreover, we found a significant correlation between soil CO2 efflux and soil moisture (which explained 44% of the overall variation) using a second-order polynomial function. Our results suggest that the seasonality of CO2 efflux is affected not only by soil temperature and moisture, but also by drying and rewetting cycles and by litterfall pulses.  相似文献

In order to better elucidate fixed-C partitioning, nutrient acquisition and water relations of prairie grasses under elevated [CO2], we grew the C4 grass Bouteloua gracilis (H.B.K.) lag ex Steud. from seed in soil-packed, column-lysimeters in two growth chambers maintained at current ambient [CO2] (350 μL L−1) and twice enriched [CO2] (700 μL L−1). Once established, plants were deficit irrigated; growth chamber conditions were maintained at day/night temperatures of 25/16°C, relative humidities of 35%/90% and a 14-hour photoperiod to simulate summer conditions on the shortgrass steppe in eastern Colorado. After 11 weeks of growth, plants grown under CO2 enrichment had produced 35% and 65% greater total and root biomass, respectively, and had twice the level of vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) infection (19.8% versus 10.8%) as plants grown under current ambient [CO2]. The CO2-enriched plants also exhibited greater leaf water potentials and higher plant water use efficiencies. Plant N uptake was reduced by CO2 enrichment, while P uptake appeared little influenced by CO2 regime. Under the conditions of the experiment, CO2 enrichment increased root biomass and VAM infection via stimulated growth and adjustments in C partitioning below-ground.
